Margaret Abbey to leave M’dindi Shire

■ MURRINDINDI Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Margaret Abbey will be leaving the position late this year.

Ms Abbey’s contract expires in June next year, but she will take accurued leave in the meantime.

Best in 100 years ■ Yea Football-Netball Club’s ‘Team of the Century’, selected by life member Don McLeish, was named at the Past Premiership Players’ reunion on Saturday (May 27).

The reunion, organised by Greg and Gaye Garlick, attracted a number of past Tigers players and families to the Rec, as Yea were victorious against Thornton-Eildon in football and netball.

Club President Brad Watts welcomed all to the special event.

Greg and Gaye Garlick plan on organising a similar reunion event at the end of May 2018.

● Yea St Patrick’s Racing Club was named at the State’s best one-day picnic club when the Country Racing awards were announced this month. Club President Richard Forde (pictured), of Cheviot, accepted the award of behalf of the club which is associated with Yea’s Sacred Heart Parish. Richard has been President of the St Pat’s Club for the past three years.

KINGLAKE CENTRAL ■ Kinglake residents voiced their loud opposition to a planning decision that might allow a cemetery and crematorium on precious land overlooking Melbourne, at last week’s Council meeting.

Resident Jemima Richards reminded Murrindindi Shire Councillors that they had been elected on a platform of doing things differently and better.

“You asked for a chance. We want to give it to you,” she said.

Council had one opportunity to reject the proposal, and to instead look at better use of the land, and the economic development or tourism opportunities.

Ms Richards said she was amazed that Council’s Planning and Economic Development staff had no communication between departments about the proposal.

Long-time resident John Griffiths said the ‘C59’ planning amendment for a cemetery and crematorium had “come out of the blue” last year.

The land had been “hijacked”, he said. The property was originally reserved for a Kinglake National Park Office and depot, which was no longer required by the State Government.

The State Government since allocated the land to the Kinglake Ranges Cemetery Trust.

Murrindindi Shire CEO Margaret Abbey last year advertised the proposal in the Mountain Monthly magazine.

“We will ensure the community is kept informed as this matter progresses,” Ms Abbey said in a press statement last year. Mr Griffiths said Ms Abbey published the wrong submission date.

Ms Richards said that the Council had a problem if it thought that an advertisment (in Mountain Monthly) was public consultation.

Ms Richards said there was a danger that Kinglake was defined by outsiders as only being the ‘Black Saturday’ area.

There were other economic development and tourism opportunities possible for this land.

“We have an opportunity to do it better.”

Nearby resident, Black Saturday survivor Anne Burgess, said that she had dread and fear about a cemetery being allowed so close to her home.

■ Murrindindi Shire Council last week backed away from supporting a Planning Scheme amendment to allow a cemetery on the scenic Ganglehoff Hill land at Kinglake.

The public gallery at the Council’s meeting held at Yea last Wednesday was packed with residents, mostly from Kinglake, mostly against the proposal.

The proposal to allow the Murrindindi Planning Scheme amendment for land at 265 Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd (Blackwood Lane) had been put forward by the Kinglake Ranges Cemetery Trust, working together with the Department of Health and Human Services.

Resident Paul Rogers said there had been a lack of consultation by the Council, and his large number of friends and acquaintances saw the proposal as an “outrage”.

Mr Rogers, who has lived in the area for 26 years, and who had an association with Kinglake for 18 years before that, said that Council had the power to “knock out” the amendment.

Resident Nigel Head said that the proposal should be abandoned. The land was a gift to the Kinglake community.

There had been no consultation, no meetings, no advertising, he said.

“The Kinglake Ranges Cemetery Trust: did they consult? The answer is no.

“Is a cemetery really required?”

Mr Head said that Council’s performance did not pass the community involvement test. A cemetery would destroy the local environment.

“Make the land available for the living,” he said, arguing that Black Saturday victims needed to be available to repair.

■ Murrindindi Shire Council learned a tough lesson about community consultation at its monthly meeting held at Yea last Wednesday (May 24).

A packed public gallery, mostly Kinglake residents, stared down Councillors on a controversial application to allow a cemetery on the picturesque Ganglehoff Hill, that overlooks Melbourne.

Council, faced with staunch opposition, blinked first.

The meeting heard it admitted that Murrindindi Shire CEO Margaret Abbey made a serious error in advertising a one-month consultation process for the planning application made by the Kinglake Ranges Cemetery Trust.

The consultation period, to change the zoning of the Crown land, needed to be two months, the Council meeting was told.

The Council had only advertised the proposed change in the Mountain Monthly newsletter.

Speaker, followed by speaker, followed by speaker, argued that there was enormous public opposition to allowing the plan at ‘Blackwood Lane’ (265 Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd).

Proper consultation had not been made with the Kinglake community, it was repeatedly argued by residents.

The proposal put forward by the Kinglake Ranges Cemetery Trust had the support of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The only speakers arguing for the proposal at last week’s meeting were Trust member Alex Pottage, and Maureen Jackson, of the planning company engaged by the Trust.

In the end, Murrindindi Councillors voted against the Planning Scheme amendment, which also proposed to remove an Environmental Significance Overlay from the land.

By now, the Council should realise that it needs to communicate more, on a weekly basis, with the residents of the Kinglake-Pheasant CreekToolangi-Kinglake West area.

The only weekly newspaper circulating in a meaningful way in all those areas is The Local Paper.

Kimglake’s message to the Council was extremely clear.

■ Murrindindi Council last week voted to support a stance urging a phasing out of natural timber harvesting in the Shire.

Meanwhile, bushfires and more discoveries of Leadbeater's possum are likely to cut native forest wood supply to Gippsland timber mills by another 25 to 35 per cent over the next 20 years, according to a major report published in the Gippsland Times.

Doreen theft ■ Detectives have charged four people over an alleged car theft.

It is alleged detectives saw a stolen Ford Territory being driven erratically in Bundoora.

The car was dumped in James Hill Drive and police arrested a man, a boy and two women a short time later.

A 20-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with theft of motor car, theft, handle stolen goods, theft from motor vehicle, conduct endangering life, drive manner dangerous and drive whilst disqualified.

He was remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday (May 29).

A 15-year-old Roxburgh Park boy was charged with theft of motor vehicle, theft, obtain property by deception, drug possession and commit indictable offence on bail.

He was remanded to face a children’s court.

A 20-year-old Sunbury woman was charged with theft of motor vehicle, handle stolen goods, possess drug of dependence and commit indictable offence on bail.

A 19-year-old Pascoe Vale woman was charged with theft of motor vehicle and handle stolen goods.

Both of the women were released on bail.

Smash and grab

■ Cash, liquor and trophies where stolen a thief jemmied doors to gain entry to the Yea Bowls Club rooms. The break-in was discovered by Club official, Mr Dick Scott, at 2.20pm on Friday. Cash totalling $170 was taken in the raid. Total value of the items taken is $369.50.

Incident free game

Kinglake depot

■ Kinglake’s bottle dump is “hopefully new acceptable” to users and nearby residents, yesterday’s meeting of Yea Council was told.

The operators of the yard, 1st Kinglake Scout Group, were answering criticism of the depot heard at the April meeting of Council.

Whittlesea CFA

■ Mr and Mrs Doug Lade of Highlands were amongst Yea and Kinglake people to attend the official opening of the Whittlesea Fire Station on Sunday, May 24 (1987).

Mr Lade attended in his capacity as a Board member representing the Rural Board of the CFA.

Reply to come ■ The Minister for Local Government, Mr Jim Simonds, says he is waiting for replies from Yea’s neighbouring Shires, before he writes a letter to the local Council.

Yea Council wrote last month to enquire what progress had been made with its request to annexe portions of Toolangi, Kinglake and the Flowerdale Valley.

Sad passing

■ A wave of sadness spread quickly over the Yea district on Sunday evening at the shock news of the death of local man, Alan Carbis. Alan had gone fishing on Sunday afternoon but complained of chest pains. He was brought to Yea and District Memorial Hospital. He had suffered a massive heart attack.

Dog attacks

■ Dog attacks have killed 21 sheep and five goats at Flowerdale Valley, Yea Council was told. Kinglake Ranger Mr G. Joyce said that his next door neighbour’s dog was responsible.

Scheme dropped

■ Yea Shire’s controversial $½ million street scheme for Kinglake has been shelved. Councillors decided not to go ahead with the plans that would have had more than 100 Kinglake residents pay $564,000 for sealed roads.

RSL says thanks

■ N.J. White, Secretary of the Yea RSL Sub-Branch, wrote in appreciation of our newspaper’s assistance.

Water Board loss

Children and parents attended in costume with some children having made hats for the day during playgroup.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is held annually to raise funds for the Cancer Council and cancer research.

The Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House, Murrindindi Shire and Kinglake Library organised Kinglake's Biggest Morning Tea while 'Balloonatic' Bill entertained children with balloon-making skills and storytelling.

Helen Simons of the Kinglake Pub supplied a variety of teapot leaf teas and commented that the day was "a really friendly group of women and a positive community experience …a very positive thing and a true reflection of Kinglake's community spirit."

Pay by card

■ Residents no longer have to rely on cash when visiting our Resource Recovery Centres.

Murrindindi Shire Council's Infrastructure and Waste Portfolio Cr Eric Lording said the Centres now have EFTPOS facilities to make it easier for people to offload their waste.

"In the past, we have had a few technical limitations on our ability to have EFTPOS facilities at our RRCs which has been frustrating for everyone,” Cr Lording said.

"Many people prefer to use cards rather than cash, so it's great that we now have these facilities so people have the choice."

Cr Lording said the machines were introduced a fortnight ago in a soft launch to allow time to iron out any glitches.

Hospital Board member resigned over merger row ■ Jennifer Keast, who quit from the Yea Hospital Board earlier this year, said she made it quite clear that her resignation was over the proposed merger with Seymour Health.

Ms Keast, a prominent and well respected member of the Yea community, said that she voiced her objections to writing, when submitting her resignation letter to State Health Minister, Jill Hennessy.

Ms Keast said a copy of the resignation letter to Yea Hospital Board President Kristin Michaels.

Ms Michaels this month told The Local Paper that she doubted that Ms Keast’s resignation was about the proposed merger, but was for “personal reasons”.

Ms Keast told The Local Paper that she did not want the community to think that her resignation was connected with the death of her father, Russell Purvis.

Ms Michaels admitted in her 50minute phone interview with The Local Paper that there had been “robust discussion” between Board members about the proposed merger with Seymour Health that could happen as early as September.

The two organisations are conducting a ‘due diligence’ period, expected to be only nine weeks.

conclusion of the management services contract with G V Health of Shepparton.

GV Health currently provides ‘corporate services’ such as the provision of a Chief Executive Officer, payroll, financial control and human resources management.

The Yea Hospital Board last year engaged a consultant who identified five options for the future running of the local facility.

Ms Keast told The Local Paper that the Yea Hospital is one of the wealthiest and healthiest country hospitals in Victoria.

She acknowledged that whilst some merged services were probably inevitable, she believed that there was undue rush in the merger process announced this month.

Ms Michaels is an ambitious health sector professional. She is CEO of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists, has just joined the Board of Fintech, and has been a prominent member of public health bodies in Melbourne’s outer-east.

Ms Keast questioned statements that Yea Hospital might receive podiatry and dental services under the merger. It already has a podiatry service, it is claimed.

Yea Hospital will represent about a quarter share in the` new organisation.

Business sector fails to back wasp initiative ■ Murrindindi Shire’s business community is failing to embrace the Council’s European Wasp “initiative”, Cr Rebecca Bowles told last week’s meeting.

“The European Wasp is being wholly embraced by everyone but the business community,” Cr Bowles said, in her Natural Environment and Climate Change Portfolio.

“I am receiving many emails covering this issue and I am passing them onto the General Manager Infrastructure Development Services to add to the growing file,” Cr Bowles said.

Lording and Cr Leigh Dunscombe, was to delay any spending until the new financial year.

Crs Lording and Dunscombe originally asked for up to $100,000 to be allocated to eradicate the wasps, which had have a severely begative effect on local business and tourism.

Cr Bowles said the emails “may assist in our need for assistance from the Agriculture Minister, but we need some letters from horticulturalists in our region to aid us”.

Cr Bowles also reported on matters involving the Green Army, roadside weeds, and the Healthy Hectares program.

Shire Briefs Yea Pool concern

■ AYea citizen’s concern that the Yea Swimming Pool had irregular leaking of “toxic water” into the surrounding water table has been addressed by Murrindindi Shire Council.

The resident claimed a height of 25mm of water was being leaked each week, and that Council needed to stop the pool leaks, and hold contractors accountable.

Margaret Abbey, Shire CEO, told last Wednesday’s Council meeting that “the pool is retaining water in accordance with its design requirement and appropriate standards.

“Any water loss can be attributed to the normal operation of a pool such as evaporation and maintenance,” Ms Abbey said.

$529,520 contract

■ Metro Urban Management Pty Ltd last week won a contract with Murrindindi Shire Council for street sweeping services.

Considered in a segment of the Council meeting closed to the public, the contact is worth $529,520 over a five-year period.

The resolution was moved by Cr Eric Lording, seconded by Cr Margaret Rae. The company has been appointed for an initial term of three years, and subject to satisfactory performance the Shire CEO is authorised to grant two additional one-year extensions.

Busy library

■ Alexandra Library has had a busy month with a full program of events, Deputy Mayor Cr Sandice McAulay told last week’s Council meeting held at Yea. The Autumn Festival in Yea inclued activities with the theme of ‘Parenting of Resilience’ with clinical psychologist Andrew Fuller.

Cr McAulay said fun was had with ‘Family Music Making’ with John Madin, and Radio Days with the Jumping Jazz Swing Band at the Alexandra Shire Hall.

Cr McAulay thanked the Alexandra Friends of the Library.

Early childhood

■ The Integrated Early Years Steering Group will be re-established in Murrindindi Shire, CEO Margaret Abbey told last week’s Shire meeting, in answer to a question from Veronica Hendrickson.

Ms Hendrickson asked what was seen as the most important step in the community’s goal for an Early Childhood Development Precinct.

Ms Abbey said the group will bring key stakeholders together to determine future requirements and progress planning for a potential integrated early years service.

“Ultimately external funding would need to be sourced in order for the project to proceed,” Ms Abbey said.

Visit to Alexandra

■ The Board of Goulburn River Valley Tourism were hosted at a function held at the Alexandra chamber of Murrindindi Shire Council, Cr Jackie Ashe told last week’s public meeting.

Cr Ashe, speaking for the Economic Development portfolio that she leads, said that she attended the annual Yarra Ranges Tourism summit, the Lake Eildon Tourism steering committee meeting, and a meeting for ‘People Power 100% Renewable’ involving TRYYackandandah and Seymour Hydro.

Not in attendance

■ The Alexandra Standard and Yea Chronicle newspapers are the major beneficiaries of Murrindindi Council’s paid advertising.

No competitive tender process has been in place over the past four years from Murrindindi Council’s executive, staff or Councillors, to offer a transparent process to show why one newspaper company is given most of the Council’s advertising spend.

The Standard/Chronicle failed to have a journalist attend last week’s Council meeting. Only The Local Paper was in attendance.

Murrindindi Mayor took trip to SA winery region ■ A trip to South Australia’s winery area by Mayor Cr Charlie Bissett - presumably at ratepayers’ expense - came under scrutiny at last week Murrindindi Council meeting.

AYea resident submitted a query to ‘question time’ at last Wednesday’s Shire meeting held at Yea. The questioner asked of Cr Bisset’s attendance at the Cittaslow conference in the Alexandrina Shire, on the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula, south ofAdelaide.

CEO Margaret Abbey responded that the Mayor gives a report at each meeting, and all Councillor costs were included in the Quarterly Financial Report.

Later in the meeting, Cr Bisset said that she discussed development and tourism whilst in Alexandrina Shire, spending time with their Mayor.

Of Cittaslow, Cr Bissett said: “We dicussed how it has benefitted their areas and in particuloar economic developemnt and tourism.”

● Yea is a Cittaslow town. Mayor Cr Charlie Bissett told last week’s Council meeting that is the theme is about visitors stopping and enjoying towns and cities. “The international movementy has 200 towns in over 30 countries.

Go-ahead for Kinglake West service station ■ The possibility of jobs for local young people at a new Kinglake West service station took Cr Eric Lording’s vote over the line, he told last week’s Murrindindi Shire meeting.

Cr Lording said that local youth were travelling to places as far away as Dixons Creek and Yarra Glen to secure parttime work.

He said the service station had 50:50 support in the Kinglake Ranges area, but the possibility of more local jobs being created and won his vote.

Earlier in the meeting, local Kinglake region resident Bev Johns gave an impassioned plea for the service station planning permit not to go ahead.

There were better sites for such as development, she said.

David Vorchheimer spoke in support of the planning permit being issued.

A Council officer’s report recommended that the Council adopt a Planning Scheme amendment to allow the service station, and for a recommendation to go to the Minister for Planning.

The plan allows for a service station, shop, postal agency, and food and drink premises.

Ms Johns told the meeting that the postal service had already moved from Kinglake West to Pheasant Creek.

The application for the site,

by G and A. Bonnadio, first went before the Council in 2015.

The combined permit and amendment was exhibited in August-September last year.

Some 12 submissions were received, the Council meeting was told. Five private submissions raised objections to the proposal.

The proposal was refrred to an independent panel for consideration.

The panel considered that the poposal complies with the direction of the Kinglake Ranges, Flowerdale and Toolangi Plan and Design Framework.

“The Planning Scheme includes strong policy support for the re-establishment of uses and community infrastructure in the bushfires in and around the townships,” said the report to Council.

“Other key issues of service station requirements, bushfire risk and water, neighbourhood character, traffic, amenity, signage, flora and fauna impacts, waterwayt impact and cultural heritage are all met by the proposal or additional reports prepared to support the proposal,” Councillors were advised.

Cr Margaret Rae and Cr Sandice McAulay, representatives for the Redgate (Alexandra) and Cathedral (Taggerty) wards, moved and seconded the motion to allow the Kinglake West proposal proceed.

The proposed service station is to be situated at 1274 Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd, Kinglake West. It is on the eastern side of the major road.

Opponents have identified that the land is on an important local water course.

■ The ordinary moifhly meeting of the Yea Waterworks Trust was held on Monday. The Commissioners present were - Coms. A. Drysdale (chairman), J. O. Sanders, J. D. O'Callaghan and J.W. Dunlop.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and accounts amounting to £23 14s 4d were passed for payment.

■ Steve McKernan was born July 28, 1952 to Ford and Val McKernan at theEuroa Bush Nursing Hospital, the middle of five children Angus, Julie, Stephen, Hilary and Roger.

He was educated at Euroa High School where he completed Form 5.

He then pursued a fi tting and turning apprenticeship at Vickers Ruwolt, a heavy engineering firm in Richmond where IKEA now stands.

He is survived by Heather, daughter Kate (Melbourne), son Cameron, daughter- in-law Steph and grandchildren Raphael and Margeaux (France).

Serious charge

■ At the Kilmore Court on Tuesday a young man named Robert Parker was committed for trial at the June sittings of the Supreme Court on a charge of carnally knowing a girl at High Camp, under the age of 16 years.

Accused, who was arrested at Mathoura, N.S.W., made a full confession : He was allowed bail in £400. ● Bridie McSpeerin from Yea and Naveed Bennett from Seymour.

Hoons at park

■ Bike racks were mangled, the skate park vandalised and Mansfield Recreation Reserve railings toppled after reckless drivers trashed the reserve last Wednesday evening causing an estimated damage of just under $5000.

The hoons were seen and heard flying up and down Highett St prior to entering the skate park and damaging a ramp and leaving tyre marks across the park.

Elevated fear

■ The North East Link as an elevated roadway would amount to environmental vandalism and create an eyesore, activists have warned.

The State Opposition claimed that at a public accounts and estimates committee hearing, department officials stated a fully elevated road couldn’t be ruled out as an option for the missing link in Melbourne’s Metropolitan Ring Rd. The State Government has accused the Opposition of running a scare campaign and has hit back at suggestions that a “sky road” was a possibility for the $10 billion project.

■ Empire Day was celebrated at the local State School on Thursday last, the chief feature being the presentation of a new flag to the school, Major F. G. Purcell making the presentation on behalf of the subscribers.

Represeentatives of the Shire Council, the School Committee, and townspeople were present.

Patriotic speeches were delivered by the Rev. R. A. Scott (chairman of School Committee), Rev. G. Martin (School Committee), Major F. G. Purcell (Shire Council), and Mr W. T. Almond (head master).

■ Mrs G. Payne, of Woodburra Farm, Johnson's Creek, a few days ago received the medal awarded her son for distinctive bravery on the field of battle. The brave fellow received the distinction some time prior to his death, and wrote his parents to this effect. We understand the medal will be on view shortly.

■ A Mt Evelyn mum fighting a failure to vote fine has hit another hurdle in her battle against the Victorian Electoral Commission.

Australia Post has admitted it lost Chantelle Monks’ statutory declaration sent by registered mail to the VEC and signed by Evelyn state Liberal MP Christine Fyffe, declaring that Ms Monks did vote in the last Yarra Ranges Council election.

Water for town

■ A conference took place last Thursday between Mr T; Murray, of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, and representatives of the Shire Council, the Water Trust, and the Yea and Mansfield Dairy Company relative to the offer made by the latter company for pumping water for the township of Yea by electric power; The following were present: Crs A. McLure and J. C. Lawrance (representing the Shire Council), Commissioners A. Drysdale. J. U. Sanders, J. D. O'Callaghan, J. Quinlan, F. G. Purcell, J. W. Dunlop (Water Trust) and Messrs D. McLeish and F. Nicholson (Yea and Mansfield Dairy Company).

The company's offer was as follows: That this company offer to pump water for the Yea Water Trust, the maximum quantity to be pumped in one day not to exeed 120,000 gallons, for the sum of £275 per annum, the trust to put in motor and pump to the satisfaction of the company's engineers (Messrs Lincoln and Co.) and that Trust agree not to increase present charge for water (£65 per annum) ■ Another of our local lads has fallen at the front. Private Wemyss, son of Mr Wemyss, of Seymour, was killed in action in France on 5th of April. Deceased was popular with all his acquaintances, who sympathise sincerely with his parents in their great loss.

Father, son drive

■ Healesville father and son Paul and Bradley Van De Ven have started their drive in their $350 Ford Falcon wagon acrossAustralia.

The pair left at 5am on Thursday (May 25). travelling with other participants to Adelaide for the start of the Shitbox Rally.

“We’ll travel across to Adelaide in a convoy with half of the other Victorian teams,” Paul said, prior to departure.

“It’s an eight hour drive so, fingers crossed, we all make it there safely, especially because we have a long way to go after Adelaide.”

■ While digging out a rabbit burrow on Saturday afternoon on the Tallarook Flats, Mr J. Errington, of the Seymour local sheds had a rather unpleasant experience. He had put his hand in the burrow when he was bitten by a snake. He immediately scarified the wound and having tied a ligature round his finger, dug out the burrow and unearthed a large reptile of the tiger species. He then proceeded to Seymour where he was successfully treated by Dr. Jensen.

Trust Chairman Russell Wealands said: “The support shown and funds raised will provide important leverage for the Trustees to seek additional funds necessary to engage specialist environmental learning services and support the growing range of learning programs at the Y Water Centre."

MC for the night David Anderson, Chair of the Y Water Centre Association, said, "This was a wonderful community night. Many of the guests, several who are relatively new to Yea and the surrounding district, thoroughly enjoyed the night and now have a better appreciation of the Y Water Centre, Yea Wetlands and the volunteer effort that has, and continues to be invested in it."

YEA FOOTBALL MATCH REPORTS SENIORS Yea 14.7 (91) defeated Thornton-Eildon 9.9 (63) Yea has snapped a four game losing streak with a spirited 28-point win over ThorntonEildon, finishing the match full of running at the Recreation Reserve.

It was a tight contest for the first three quarters, with the lead changing several times but neither side ever managing to put together a buffer of more than two goals.

This is all changed in the final term as the home team's spread finally overwhelmed the visitors, who managed just a solitary behind to the Tigers’ 4.5.

Paddy Rattray looked on right from the first bounce and was unstoppable up forward, benefiting from some excellent delivery up the ground to finish with seven majors.

Lachie Kelly played his best game for the club and Cameron Evans used the ball beautifully.

Dan O'Dwyer started like a house on fire and dominated all day in defence, constantly taking intercept marks and driving Yea out of the back half.

Aidan McSpeerin did a great job on Boners playmaker Tom Keating, while Harrison Jarvie and Riley Aldous both got on top in the middle of the ground.

After leading by less than a goal at quarter and half-time, Thornton drew level at the final change to set up a thrilling last term.

However, an emphasis on handball receives and moving the ball quickly into attack paid dividends for the hosts.

It was an impressive effort considering the number of players missing from the side, including Xavier O'Dwyer, Indi Kaak, Hayden Witton, David Webb, Trent McMahon and Zac Pell.

Yea will look to make it two on the trot when they travel to Alexandra this weekend.

Yea 7.6 (48) defeated Thornton-Eildon 4.5 (29) Yea is one game clear in the top five following an important 19-point victory over Thornton-Eildon in an intriguing contest at home.

After a couple of heavy losses to Belgrave and Yarra Glen, the Tigers have benefited from some new personnel to win consecutive matches for the first time this season, but not before the Boners gave them a bit of a scare.

Yea burst out of the blocks with a three goal opening term, dominating play and holding the visitors scoreless. However, Thornton hit back in the second, booting three goals one to trail by just nine points at the major break.

The home side stood up in the premiership quarter to take a vital 19-point buffer into the last change before holding on to record their third win of the season.

Tyrone Lang was outstanding in the midfield and went to another level in the last term, Cameron Ryan pressed his case for a senior return with a strong performance and Ben Broadway was superb on debut, finishing with two majors.

Jack Sundblom (two goals) did a power of the work wherever he went, while Andrew Butterworth continued his excellent run of form and Jaryed Garlick racked up possessions at will.

Like the senior side, the reserves have adapted their style of play and are spreading the ball more often than early in the season, taking advantage of the wide expanses of the Recreation Reserve.

Thornton-Eildon side. Without Megan Leatham available, coach Cindy Newcomen slotted into the side to which she knows so well and was able to rotate her eight fellow players well throughout the game.

The game was quite even in the first quarter with the Tigers just having the edge to take an eight- goal lead into the first break.

Their game continually improved over the remaining three quarters, their third quarter a dominant shooting display with 16 goals and their last quarter a dominant defensive display, restricting Thornton to just four goals for the quarter, the highlight a brilliant rejection from Sophie Stares.

All in all, it was a thoroughly consistent four quarter performance that saw the Yea girls run out 30 goal winners. Well done girls.

Yea will look to make it three wins on the trot next week against Alexandra, a game we are all confident that they can win. Currently sitting in sixth position, if other results also go their way, the girls could be in the top five in the next week or two.

They are really starting to come together as a team, finding their ideal combinations with players starting to really own their positions.

Belgrave is the clear ladder leaders in the AGrade competition and they look like they will be hard to beat, however the Yea side is more than capable of beating every other side in the competition. Good luck girls.

3rd Quarter. Even in the bitter cold all the girls played a great game. Holly's (WD) quick thinking passing the ball through the middle, Ruby's (GD) good goal defences stopped the goal for Seymour and forced the ball down to the Tigers end for another goal. Yea 39 to Seymour 27.

4th Quarter. The Tigers were still going strong in the last quarter. All the girls were playing a great team game with a lot of name calling and great passing skills. The girls had a great win and well done to all.

YEA NETBALL MATCH REPORTS D-GRADE

■ A dominant first quarter set up a huge win over Thornton in the D-Grade match. The Tigers shot 15 goals to 1 in the first 10 minutes, a winning lead that Thornton were never going to be able to make up.

The lead also made it comfortable for coach Deb to use her bench well, rotating players continually for the remainder of the match.

Thornton improved each quarter but the Tigers were just too good, continuing on to win by 28 goals and score their biggest win for the season so far.

Other than a draw with Belgrave the D-Grade team is yet to lose a game and the win on the weekend rewarded them top position on the ladder after the round of matches were complete.

Yea is now two points clear of both Yarra Glen and Alexandra. The Tigers travel to Alexandra next weekend and if they can win again, will secure top position and take a strong hold on the competition.

C-GRADE

■ Thorton Eildon is not fielding a C-Grade side this season, so the C-Grade girls had yet another week off, not having played since Yarra Glen on May 6.

Over the past two weeks four of the young C- Grade players have all played in the B-Grade games and acquitted themselves fabulously, a credit to their coach Lauren Hearn, their older teammates, but more importantly themselves, well done girls.

C-Grade remains undefeated in the competition, their closest match to date against Belgrave, where they really dug in their heels and produced an excellent two-goal win.

Next week’s match against Alexandra will be a first versus second encounter and the Tiger girls will be eager to get back on court and knock off the Rebels. Go get 'em girls.

B-GRADE

■ B-Grade scored another big win over Thornton-Eildon, thumping the Boners 80-19.

Yea played a steady and consistent four quarters, scoring 18, 20, 19 and 23 at each quarter.

Well done to the shooters for their great accuracy, but also to the other five players in the non-shooting positions that work so hard in defence and attack to supply the goal shooters the ball.

Molly, Jordan and Emily were all elevated to B-Grade this week and they were fantastic, each of them playing their respective position strongly and with great confidence. Well done girls, super proud of you.

B-Grade sits in fourth position, six points from ladder leaders Belgrave, and two points shy of next weeks opponent Alexandra. Both teams will be hungry for victory to cement the higher position on the ladder. Yea should have a full team to rotate next week and are ready for the challenge.

■ Yea played a great quarter with strong defence all over the court. Teagan returned this week after injuring herself in round 1 getting plenty of rebounds. Hannah C played beautifully in GK getting lots of deflects. Hannah B's shooting was on point not missing a goal. Yea 10, Seymour 6.

Sophie Danieli joined the Tigers and slotted back in WA nicely. Caitlyn stuck tight to her player in C all quarter making her work for every ball. Vivi got her hands on a sloppy Seymour pass which resulted Yea scoring a goal. 16 - 13 The Tigers dropped their game a little this quarter which allowed Seymour to catch up on the score board. Ebony in WD used her defensive skills in the mid court to our advantage which helped our mid courters to bring the ball down.

Jordyn O presented well around the ring for our shooters. 23 - 26 It was goal for goal this at the start of the quarter. Jordan W presented herself well with great leads through out the game. Teagan and Ebony defended nicely together making Seymour shooters work for every ball but once they got it they didn't miss resulting in Seymour taking the win. The girls are improving each week and they should be proud of that achievement. Well done Tigers! Final Score: 29 - 36.

■ 1st Quarter. A quick start for the Tigers getting the ball rolling through their hands and for the first goal. Maggie's (GA) fast approach to the ball also gave them another goal. The game had plenty of speed, with high jumps from Melody (WA) and Melina (GK) intercepting well. Yea 8 to Seymour 9.

2nd Qurater. The 2nd quarter started with two quick goals from Abby (GA), Seymour picked up on the speed putting another goal on the scoreboard for their team. Cassy's (GK) defended their goals very hard in this fast game and Jordyn passed the ball smoothly on to Abby.

UNDER 14. DIV. 2.

■ 1st Quarter. It was our second game against Euroa and the girls were after a win. Yea came out of the blocks quickly, moving the ball well and thyree quick goals between Olivia and Maggie saw us on the board. This was a fast paced quarter, Lily and the team moved the ball beautifully around the court. Great communication and pressure from the girls kept Euroa to four goals.

2nd Quarter. Great defence by Sarah and Emma kept the pressure on. Abby and Lily were working well together and the goals keep coming. Passing was once again first rate by the team, a real improvement. Another great quarter by Yea and the scores were close.

3rd Quarter. Confidence was high from the Yea team coming into the last half and they were really looking for a win. Great defending from Yea continued this quarter. Shanae and Lily worked the ball well around the court. Euroa tookadvantage of a few missed passes resulting in goals. Yea looked to bounce back in the last quarter.

4th Quarter. Euroa was hoping to hold on for the win so both teams come out fighting.

Sarah was strong in defence again and the girls were really trying hard. Plenty of intercepts from both sides saw a few turnovers. Yea were really pushing to make up the shortfall but unfortunately Euroa ended up with the win.

What a great game to watch girls, a real team effort. You worked really hard at training during the week and it showed in your game, well done.

■ Q1. A cold Sunday in Yea, the girls were trying hard to keep warm. Seymour scored the first goal. Seymour was just that little higher with their passing. It started to rain slightly and the girls were being careful not to slip on the court.

Yea 0, Seymour 3 Q2. Seymour scored the first goal. Seymour had the height. Zoee and Tilly defended well in Seymour's goal. Millie and Lauren passed well.

Seymour's passing flowed down the court, the Yea girls tried their darndest.

Yea 0, Seymour 6 Q3. Seymour came out strong again. Bridie Mc had a good go in the goals, not letting the height difference put her off. Zoee and Tilly defended well in the goal. Rain held off in the third quarter with the girls being able to run more freely. Bridie K intercepted the tall passing from Seymour and called well. Chloe B scored the first goal for Yea. Yea 1, Seymour 12 Q4 .Yea girls passed well to Tilly in centre, trying to get the ball down to the Yea goal. Ashlee had a great attempt at goals but the ball bounced out. Seymour's height was proving tough. Yea girls did well to not allow Seymour to score in the final quarter with Maddie doing well in GK to assist.

■ The Tigers battled the Lions on Sunday with two evenly matched teams. Winter was just around the corner and the afternoon gave a real display of what to expect in the coming months.

Yea was first to attack but inaccurate kicking to goal would again haunt the Tigers until a long shot at goal by Firmin sailed through for the only goal of the quarter.

It was shaping up as a day for the defenders on both teams to earn their places as every forward entry was met with a wall of backmen ready to return the ball to attack.Quarter- time: Yea 1.3 (9) to Seymour 0.3 (3).

The second quarter started better for Yea with a strong mark to Turvey who goaled ,then soon after found McMaster who chipped neatly to Beattie for another. Again it was the backs on both teams who were on top, Gilbee, Beattie, Wilsmore aided by J. Aldous and Muller stopped many Seymour attacks.Half-time: Yea 3.5 (23) to Seymour 0.3 (3).

The second half became a real struggle with rain and wind making life difficult for all players, Seymour scoring the only goal in the half.

Both teams had plenty of forward entries, but high kicks to the Tigers forwards made their job a lot harder than it should have.

Final score Yea 3.9 (27) to Seymour 1.6 (12).

YEA GOLF CLUB REPORT ■ Yea Golf Club saw 13 men compete for the second round of the N.J. Murray Trophy on Saturday.

Winner of the day was Robert O’Halloran (16) with 38 stableford points. Runner-up was Greg Clements (14) with 37, while new member Brian SImmons (12) was third on countback with 36 points, from Michael Spagnolo (10) and Alan Pell (10).

Nearest the Pin on the 18th was Sam Wright and the Club Award was won by Malcolm Bett.

Winner of the N.J. Murray Trophy was Michael Spagnolo with 78 points from Rob O’Halloran with 73 points and Brian Simmons 72.

Eight men contested the Stableford competition at Yea on Wednesday. Winner was Peter Johnston (16) with 36 points. Runner-up was Allan Thatcher (18) with 33 points. Martin Lowe was NTP on the 18th and Jeff Aurisch held on to win the Club Award.

Alex was only able to add one goal (Ben Cooper) against the breeze.

Coach Sam Kidd stressed the importance of attacking on the left side coming in with the wind in the third quarter but Kinglake using the conditions and the ground well were able to match Alex and leave them trailing by 17 points at the last change.

With five goals to two (Steve Steiner) in the last quarter Kinglake finished too strongly for a disappointing Alexandra who seem to have a dislike for the Kinglake ground and it seems to effect the way we play even when the surface is as good as it was last Saturday.

Ryley Norris played his best game this season whilst Ben Cooper and Stephen Steiner were hard at most clearances and in defence Conor Heaslip and Will Goonan were consistent, Alex 7.11 - 53 lost to Kinglake 13.13 - 91.

Thursday night dinners have two sittings, for juniors and then seniors after their respective training with main course and sweets - adults $15 and kids $10, everyone is welcome. ★ VALEWARRICK COOKSON Vale Warrick Cookson - the Alexandra Football/Netball Club was saddened to hear of the passing of Warrick Cookson recently. \ Warrick played 87 games for the Rebels between 1978 and '88 with his last game as a member of the 1988 Premiership team under Coach John Tossol. Warrick was a deceptively quick player with good skills and played on the wing in the above game and his two goals led the way as Alexandra came back from six goals down at half-time to run over Shepparton East at Benalla. ■ After last week’s epic battle the Seymour Lions walked into hungry Tigers den as the pack hunted every kick and opened with a four goal straight first quarter.

Chayne Klinge took a strong mark as he took a huge hit in the second with Dominik ‘The Dominator’ Ciantar getting a run in the forward pocket showing his versatility at both ends of the ground.

When Rhys Harding slotted a great goal you could see the Tigers licking their chops.

7.1 (43) at half-time with the Lions yet to trouble the scorers saw the Tigers go for the kill in the third.

A strong half-back line kept pushing the ball forward but a stella rperformance from new cub Brodie Davey led the way to a convincing win for the ferocious yellow-and-black.

■ Following its A-Grade netball loss Alexandra opened the Seniors footy by kicking the first score of the seniors in the opening minutes and kicking the opening goal of each quarter, Alexandra could not continually penetrate their forward 50, losing to Kinglake by 38 points.

The first quarter saw Kinglake laying 11 tackles with 14 centre clearances to just three from Alexandra. leaving Kinglake with a quarter time margin of just nine points, Kinglake 4.1 (25) to Alexandra 2.4 (16).

Despite Kinglake having only 11 inside 50s to Alexandra's 12 during the opening quarter the scoreboard didn't reflect such with Kinglake's Zac White then kicking a Lakers goal just as the siren sounded.

Kinglake playing coach Brad Wilkinson described Kinglake's first quarter effort as "We got right on top. Fantastic that quarter …that's what happens when we stay switched on … talking to one another and staying focused.

We're cutting them off and we're getting scoring shots from it. Keep on top of that contested ball guys.”

Alexandra co-coach's Sam Kidd and Scott Rowan asked Alexandra players to "stop just stop watching them (Kinglake) run off with the ball … stop just watching it happen and do something about it ".

After their quarter-time rev up it was Alexandra which came out firing to quickly put the first goal on the board before Kinglake would later break away to an 18-point lead midway through the second quarter.

Despite centre clearances being equal at four each, Kinglake would manage 15 inside 50s to just two from Alexandra to see Kinglake 20 points up at half time. Kinglake 6.7 (43) to Alexandra 3.5 (23).

Alexandra again opened scoring to reduce the margin to just 14 points whilst Kinglake doubled Alexandra's centre clearances, six to three with Kinglake have 13 inside 50 metres

■ The AFL Yarra Ranges League Round 6 of the 2017 season last Saturday saw the Rebels on the road again for the second week in succession, traveling to Kinglake for two games of football and four games of netball.

The weather was fine, the ground in good condition but a strong north easterly wind favored the Club rooms end. ★ RESERVES The Reserves had eight changes to the team of last week and kicked with the aid of the strong wind and kicked five first quarter goals, three of which came from the boot of Captain Jedd Hamill who marked strongly.

Whilst the forwards virtually set up the win in the first, the defence led by Jack Elkington played their part in the second quarter restricting the home side to only two goals although Alex had difficulty kicking in from behinds.

Alex extended their lead in the third quarter despite their inaccuracy and although narrowly outscored in the last went on to a 37 point win, 12.8 (80) to 5.13 (43).

Coaches Sam Kidd and Scott Rowan made three changes with Jacob Brereton, Rhys Steward and Ben Woollard coming in to replace the injured Luke Heard, Scott Heveren and Chris Mullins.

Alex began with the wind and attacked early for little result until a kick off his shin in the goal square brought up the first goal to Zach Heaslip who later misjudged the wind at his second attempt before Kinglake ran the ball the length of the ground to goal.

Jacob Brereton marked but he also missed to the right side as Alex missed further opportunities as they played into the home side's hands, attacking down the wrong side of the ground.

Ryley Norris who had started well kicked Alexandra's second goal but Kinglake kicked the next three goals as they seemed more settled.

The Alex defence knew they needed to play well to keep their team in the game and this they did, restricting the home side to two goals but

The Alexandra and Yea Clubs will also compete for the inaugural Kevin Hedger and Richard Ivey Memorial Challenge Cup which has been organised by both Clubs "in recognition of service and loyalty by both men to their respective Clubs and communities" with the Cup donated by Cindy McLeish, State Member for Eildon.

The Cup will be decided by wins across all games of football and netball on the day and will be presented in the social rooms at the end of the day. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the day.
