Newspapers arrest ■ Police have arrested and interviewed a woman after large numbers of newspapers were allegedly dumped. The bundles of newspapers were allegedly dumped last week across areas including Beaconsfield Upper, Narre Warren North, Pakenham Upper, Cockatoo, Yarra Glen and Yea. A 54-year-old Narre Warren woman was arrested on Monday. She has been released and is expected to be charged on summons with obtaining financial advantage by deception and three counts of aggravated littering. ● Earlier story, Page 11

Vale Graeme John Chisholm, 1962-2017 ■ A tragic farm accident at Limestone on Tuesday last week (June 20) has robbed the Yea district of one of its most highly respected members, Graeme John Chisholm, at the age of 55. ‘Chissy’ was well known in a number of community roles, but especailly as a family man, businessman, sportsman and volunteer fireman. The condolences of the community have gone out to his wife Karen (nee McLeish), daughter Nicole and son Andrew. Graeme was the son of the late Don and Moireen Chisholm (well known throughout Highlands and Yea), and brother of Patricia and Donna (all dec.). A funeral service celebrating Graeme’s life will be held at 1pm on Thursday, June 29, in the Yea Shire Hall. At the conclusion of the service the cortege will proceed to the Yea Cemetery. CFA members respectfully invited to attend. Arrangements are in the hands of McCormack’s. Also participating will be members of the Yea Football-Netball Club. News firm acts fast to clean paper trail ■ Even though the problem was not of his company’s making, a newspaper group boss has acted promptly to clean a mess of newspapers strewn alongside the Melba Hwy from Yarra Glen to Yea. Paul Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of Star News Group, promptly sent staff to investigate the litter problem on Friday, as soon as he was alerted to the incident. Kathleen Jackson of Yea reported that newspapers were blowing alongside the busy highway on Thursday night. She identified many of the newspapers as being copies of the Berwick News from February, four months ago.

■ A report from Local Paper reader Kathleen Jackson on Friday led to swift action in fixing a local environmental problem. Ms Jackson contacted The Local Paper on Friday, asking if inquiries could be made about loose newspapers strewn alongside the Melba Hwy over a 60km distance between Yarra Glen and Yea. Ms Jackson’s investigation showed some of the newspapers to have originated from Berwick, published months ago. Mr Thomas said the matter was now in the hands of the Emerald Police. 7 minutes to pass $33 million budget ■ Last Wednesday’s special meeting of Murrindindi Shire Council, called to approve the $33 million budget for the 201718 financial year, took just seven minutes. The 6pm meeting held at the Council’s chambers at Alexandra was closed at 6.07pm. Six of the seven councillors attended the meeting; Cr Jackie Ashe submitted an apology for her non-attendance. Cr Rebecca Bowles and Cr Eric Lording successfully moved for the Council’s fouryear strategic resource plan to be adopted. The plan includes provision for a $½-million deficit in each of the next four financial years. The meeting alo gave authority for Murrindindi Shire Chief Executive Officer Margaret Abbey to publish public notices notifying of the adoption of the 2017-18 budget.
The Council endorsed the Draft Annual Budget 2017-18 for public exhibition at its ordinary meeting on April 26. The budget has since been on public exhibition, and its availability has been advertised in local newspapers. Submissions were sought from the public and all submitters had the opportunity to be heard at a special meeting of Council on June 7. A one-off rate freeze will apply to all commercial and industrial properties for 201718. All other properties will see an increase in the average rate of 2 per cent. ■ Yea Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Society Association (Show Society) might receive a $660 grant from Murrindindi Council tonight (Wed.). The Show Society submitted a grant application for $1460, but $660 has been suggested by Council officers as the best amount. The grant is aimed towards the ‘Friday night fun for everyone’ on the evening prior to the Saturday Yea Show events.

Fire report ■ The Victorian Parliament’s Environment and Planning Committee has tabled its long-awaited report into Fire Season Preparedness in Victoria. The inquiry, which has taken 12 months, included hearing from more than 100 witnesses in Melbourne and regional Victoria and received 86 submissions. ■ “As far as I am concerned, we are at war,” said Broadford Shire President Cr Paul Fleming, after Yea Shire signalled that it wanted to take over all of Flowerdale. Bill West of the Kilmore Free Press combined with the Yea newspaper in 1987 to report on Yea’s municipal ambitions. Yea also signalled its desire to take on all the Kinglake and Toolangi areas from the Shires of Eltham, Healesville and Whittlesea.
Doctors retire
■ Yea medical practitioners Charles Hosking and Dorothy Paterson sold their practice to East Melbourne practitioner Dr Ian Rafter on this day, 30 years ago. The husband-and-wife team started at ‘Haletta;, on April 1, 1953, taking over from Dr. R.R. Pilkington. ‘Haletta’ was built for Dr Oswald Shields and his wife (formerly Miss Hallett).

Wedge-tailed eagles found dead at Limestone ■ Wildlife officers are appealing to the public for information relating to the killing of Wedge-tailed Eagles (Aquila audax) in the Yea area. Up to 20 Wedge-tailed Eagles have been found dead, either shot or poisoned, in the same area during recent years. In the latest incident, four Wedge-tailed Eagles have been found dumped in Black Range State Forest, nearLimestone, by Forest Fire Management Victoria crews conducting a routine patrol. “Illegally destroying protected native wildlife is a serious environmental crime, which carries significant fines and/or imprisonment,” Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s (DELWP) Acting Program Manager Resource Protection and Management, Leigh Murray, said. “Because of the location of the carcasses, we believe that they have been intentionally destroyed, possibly shot,” Mr Murray said. “Last year we located eight eagles within a 25-metre radius of each other, that had been poisoned. “We are calling on the community to help us gather information about the killings, which will hopefully lead to the prosecution of those responsible. “Wedge-tailed Eagles are

The 38-year-old was last seen on Kidgell St, Lilydale, about 8pm on Saturday night. Police and family have concerns for her welfare as she has a mild intellectual disability. She is described as 165cm tall with long brown hair and was last seen wearing dark coloured tracksuit pants, jacket and was carrying a blue backpack. Police have released an image of Catherine in the hope someone recognises her and can provide information regarding her current whereabouts. Teens face charges

VBA boss retires
■ Victorian Building Authority chief executive Prue Digby will retire by the end of the year. ‘Kept in dark over GV Highway works’ ■ The State Government has failed to answer questions relating to its plans for the Goulburn Valley Highwaybetween Cathkin and Yarck, says local MLA Cindy McLeish. Ms McLeish, MLA for Eildon, raised the questions in State Parliament on May 9. The Minister had 30 days, under Legislative Assembly rules to answer the questions. Ms McLeish said the lack of responsiveness is typical of a government that does not care about the views of country people. "The Andrews Government has failed once again to consult local people who use the Goulburn Valley Highway on a daily basis,” Ms McLeish said. “Yet again, locals have been left in the dark about what works will be undertaken.” Ms McLeish asked Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan whether the Government would install centre wire rope barriers between

Further speculation surrounding the scope of works has been heightened following Mr Donnellan's presentation to Parliament's Public Accounts and Estimates which stated works on the highway were being extended beyond Molesworth to Cathkin. "It's important that we ensure this road safety infrastructure is built properly and to do that we need I have unfortunately been contacted by a number of local community members who have been faced with dangerous situations on the highway due to these works and the government needs to rectify these issues immediately," Ms McLeish said.

■ The Commonwealth Arbitration Court has announced the new award for shearers. The proposed award, summarised, provides for the following increases in the rates paid to shearers, etc. Flock of sheep, from 24s to 30s, with correspondingincreases for rams, stud ewes, etc.; crutching, from 6s per 100 to 7s 6d; shed hands, from 37s 6d per week, with "keep," to £3 per week, with keep; wool pressing, from £2 105 per week, with keep, to £4 per week, with keep ; 20s for double-fleeced sheep; the margin of minimum and maximum sheep to be shorn was fixed at one-fourth of the maximum. The proportion of learners was fixed at one pen in ten. A higher bonus for sheep shorn by machine was refused. The standard hours for shearers still tremain at 48.

Rae, who has recently been transferred to the Australian Flying Corps at Reading, England: "At last I am able to put something new on top of my letters. I have written from Egypt. France, and Belgium, and am now in England at last. I tried to get into the Australian Flying Corps, and heard no more about it until two or three days ago; I was in action when.the order came. The place where we were was a perfect hell. We were shelled with high explosives, shrapnel and gas shells all day and night. We could not rest or sleep. We bored a tunnel about 25 ft. deep into solid chalk, and were quite safe unless the mouth of the tunnel was hit. I am now in Reading, a big town in England. I will be training for the Flying Corps now.”

● The Alexandra-based Fallon family has sold its Shepparton Transit business to the Dysons Bus group. Representatives of the two family-based companies are pictured marking this month’s handover. The services that Dysons will now operate include V/Line, charter, government and private school services as well as town services. Each of the employees will transition across to Dysons. The Dyson family has thanked the Fallon family which operated the Shepparton-based services since 2003.
■ On Monday, several motor drivers were brought before the court charged with travelling without the regulation rear lights. In answer to the charge the majority said that the lights had been extinguished by jolting caused by a number of holes in the road. Federal cash for north-east rail line Euroa MLA Steph Ryan says that an extra $40 million will be spent on upgrading the north-east Victorian rail track, on top of the $100 million announced in May. “In total the Commonwealth will now invest $140 million to upgrade the track so that trains run faster and more smoothly,” Ms Ryan said. “A joint working group will be set up between the Victorian and Commonwealth governments to manage oversight of the project but, in light of the ARTC’s previous failings, it is vitally important that the community is also involved in the project.” “The ARTC needs to work hard to regain the faith of the community after it botched the installation of concrete sleepers on the line in 2009, exacerbating pre-existing weaknesses in the structure of the track and leaving us with a service that is slower and less reliable,” Ms Ryan said.

■ Following the attempted theft of petrol from the United Service Station in Wallan, a 17-year-old driver has been apprehended. The male, from Craigieburn was identified from CCTV and arrested on Saturday by Sgt Derrett and his team. The man was remanded in custody after being charged with theft of motor car and three counts of reckless conduct endangering life.

Youths in fight
■ Alexandra Police are investigating a report of an assault between two young men last week. The Police have taken numerous statements and their enquiries are continuing into the matter.
$22,000 fire
■ Kilmore Police are investigating a $22,000 car fire. The victim, who was completely unaware his vehicle had been stolen and burnt, was alerted by his mother of the incident. The vehicle was located by passers-by in Beveridge when they observed a large amount of smoke coming from the location. Luckily no other property was damaged in the fire, Police are continuing their enquiries into the theft and damage. Any person who has information in relation to these or other offences is urged to contact their local police station or Crimestoppers on 1300 333 000.
Jewellery taken
■ Jewellery to the value of $3700 has been stolen from a residence in Bakers Rd, Kilmore East. Offenders have broken into the victim's house and ransacked it, stealing valuable items of jewellery. Crime scene investigators have attended at the scene and will assist uniform police with their investigation.
Wallet stolen
■ A workman's wallet including $90 cash has been stolen from a cabin at a caravan park in the region. The workman, who was asleep at the time has had his cabin broken into and his wallet that was stored in his lunch bag stolen. The man now has to replace all his licences and personal bank cards.
Marijuana found
■ Being observant is always a good quality to have as a policeman, and this week it paid off for local Seymour Police after attending an address to speak to a male. Whilst the man was lounging about, Police noticed marijuana next to him and questioned the man about it. The man made full admissions and will be appearing in court at a late date to face drug usage charges.
Plate taken
■ Seymour Police are investigating a $50 theft from a motor vehicle in Emily Street this week after a number plate was stolen from a vehicle for sale. The plate was noticed missing by staff, however it is unclear when the theft occurred.
Carton thrown
■ Police are on the hunt for a driver heading north on the Hume Hwy in Kilmore last week who allowed his passenger to throw a twolitre plastic carton of milk at an oncoming bus, resulting in the bus windscreen being broken and glass injuries being sustained by the bus driver.

■ Building materials to the value of $1500 have been stolen from a house under construction in Anzac Ave, Seymour. It appears the thieves have entered the property via the rear, as the external walls were still under construction. As well as stealing a roll of carpet, the thieves have attempted, unsuccessfully, to steal an air conditioning unit.

Age-friendly projects ■ Three new projects are about to kick off in Murrindindi Shire that aim to improve the livability of communities for older people. The projects are part of the Age Friendly Communitiesinitiative and include a transport forum, age friendly service maps and a network and collaboration project, according to Council's Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Sandice McAulay. The first project - the ‘Moving Murrindindi’ age friendly transport forum, has been created to bring together a broad range of groups from service providers and volunteer organisations and the community to discuss our community transport resources, challenges and opportunities. "This project will aim to identify and evaluate our current transport service gaps and consider and investigate initiatives we can use as solutions to fill those gaps," Cr McAulay said. "We're also keen to develop ideas to improve everyone's access to transport as a way of increasing a sense of commu-

Cr McAulay said the forum will be run as a four-hour conference, centrally located for easy access. The second project Council will be working on is the Age Friendly Service Maps, which will be collated and made easily available with up-to-date information about services available in the Shire.
"To a resident this will look like a brochure or small poster with service information and contacts for older people in the community. “These guides will be located on Council's website for direct access by our community to either view online or download. Hard copies of the map will also be available across the Shire," Cr McAulay said. The third project is ‘Through the Ages’, which will provide additional support to the five Community and Neighbourhood Houses in the Shire. Cr MCAulay said these houses play a critical role in the Shire as they act as a one-stopshop for many community members and groups. These houses in particular hold close connections to our older people and seniors groups including U3A craft and knitting clubs, community sheds, senior citizens and Probus clubs. The Age Friendly Communities project is funded by the Victorian Governmentin partnership with the Municipal Association of Victoria.
■ The Yea Community Kitchen operates between 12 Noon-2pm on Wednesdays. It is a small group of people who meets on a regular basis to plan, cook and share healthy affordable meals. Each person puts in $5-$10 towards ingredients, cooks, eats together and then takes home a few meals to put in the freezer. The sessions are held in the Yea Council Chambers, between the Yea Community House in the Yea Library/Council building. Sessions run every 2-3 weeks. The group is limited to eight people. ‘Have your say’
■ Murrindindi Shire Council is going to continue its ‘Have Your Say’ theme, following its adoption of its four-year plan and budget last Wednesday (June 21). Murrindindi Shire Council Mayor Cr Charlie Bisset said the Council Plan and Budget reflects the new and different flavour of the new Council. She says the Plan and Budget incorporates the views and priorities provided by the community, through the Have Your Say ‘community engagement’. "Three of the key messages in this Plan listening to the community, making Council easier to do business with and supporting business and community development - will remain at the forefront of Council's priorities. The budget supports achievement of those messages", said Cr Bisset. "Every year Council faces the ever-increasing challenge of doing more with less, while providing the best possible value for our residents' hard-earned rates dollars. "This year our Budget challenge is no different, however the 'Have Your Say' campaign has allowed our communities to identify their priorities for the Shire and has provided the direction we need to get started. “In our Budget we have limited average rate increases to the State Government's rate cap of 2 per cent and have provided a one year freeze on rate increases for businesses. "Council is working hard to better explain what it does, improve transparency and ensure it listens to the community. This Plan is only the start of the conversation - Council will be asking everyone to keep 'Having Your Say' for the life of the four year Plan." "Council has taken a new approach to thinking about its work, by concentrating on four priority areas based on community feedback. These are 'Our People', which focuses on strengthening community participation and involvement; Our Place, which focuses on enhancing the livability of the Shire; Our Prosperity which focuses on building economic opportunities and Our Promise which outlines Council's undertaking to be responsive and accountable to the community." Cr Bisset said agreeing on strategies and strategic indicators were only the first steps of the process, and these were requirements under Victorian legislation. "The next stage is to incorporate community feedback in annual action and implementation plans, which will put 'meat on the bones' of the strategies. Having annual plans will allow us to be innovative, nimble and flexible in how we work with our community and respond to its changing needs. This will be an ongoing conversation with our community over our four year term", she said.

YEA GOLF CLUB REPORT
■ Golf was a little different for the men at Yea Golf Club on Saturday. All the tees were moved into unusual positions, creating some shorter holes, some longer holes and certainly some holes with a new dogleg in them. Despite the changes there were some great scores. The first sunny day for a couple of weeks was a great help but the new tee positions seemed to eradicate some player's normal nerves on particular holes. The scoring was Stableford and John Tanner and Jeff Aurisch both had a great result of 41 points. John was the winner on count back with 23 points on the back nine. Jeff had 23 points on the first nine. Carl Maffei, Peter Johnston and Gary Pollard all had 37 points with Carl taking the count back honours from Peter. THORNTON-EILDON Johnathan Fisher was nearest the pin on the V YARRA GLEN 18th and finished with a nice birdie. YEA FOOTBALL CLUB SENIORS/RESERVES REPORT SENIORS Kinglake 20.14 (134) defeated Yea 9.6 (60) Yea fell away in the second-half against an improved Kinglake line-up, copping a disappointing 74-point defeat. It was a poor way to finish the contest against a side that the Tigers trailed by four goals and then overran in round one, a situation that wasn't aided by not having a bench after the main break and a playing with 17 men in the final term. The Lakers got the jump early and looked likely to hold a big quarter-time lead before Yea hit back with two late majors in real time. The second quarter was an arm wrestle, with both teams slotting 4.3 apiece to set up an intriguing second half. However, a pair of Kinglake goals late in the third term rendered the contest more or less over heading into the final stages of the match. Riley Aldous ran rampant in the middle and constantly competed against multiple opponents, Dan O'Dwyer gave great drive from defence and James Ryan was an absolute rock down back, recapturing some of his 2016 form. Cameron Evans found plenty of the football and David Webb (two goals) was relentless with his pressure forward of centre, while Shaun Pearce gave a great target inside 50, finishing with four majors. It was a similar story to what it has been all season, with an inability to play four quarters of consistent, disciplined football the major source of the visitors' woes. Kinglake 11.11 (77) defeated Yea 8.6 (54) An undermanned Yea outfit started reasonably well but ultimately played beneath their best in a 23-point loss to Kinglake. The Tigers looked dangerous going forward early but struggled to make the most of their opportunities, kicking 2.4 in the first term to hold a slender lead at quarter time. The Lakers domianted the second stanza to take a 20-point ascendancy at the main change, which proved to be the differecne in the end. Both sides managed five goals in the second half but the damage had been done earlier in the contest, with the deficit to great for the visitors to reel in. Ben Broadway (three goals) was outstanding in a best-on-ground performance, Lindon Young was everywhere early and Zac Butler was superb through the midfield. Darcy Pell gave plenty in the ruck, James Clavarino was all class in his second match back and Andrew Butterworth worked tirelessly wherever he roamed, while Ant Murray played his best game for the club. The defeat saw the Tigers fall to sixth place on the ladder, equal on points with Seville but trailing by less than five percentage points. Yea will take on Belgrave at home this Saturday. Kinglake. ■ Yea hosted St.Marys on a cold but clear day and it was the visitors who got away to a quick start booting three quick goals leaving Tiger supporters a bit shell shocked. The Tigers then began to run and find their targets,Turvey continuing his great run booting two quick goals and Beattie bagging one to give the Tigers a slender lead at quarter-time, Yea 3.1 (19) to St Mary's 3.0 (18). The second started brilliantly with Turvey marking a low ball ,then kicking straight to increase the lead.From then on it was all St Marys with the visitors kicking the next five goals. HalfTime: Yea 4.1(25) to StMarys 8.3 (51). ■ It was a typically cold Sunday winter morning, with frozen legs and goose bump covered arms. The Tigers got straight into the game with their best efforts. The first quarter began with some great body contact from Jardine Nai who stuck to his player like glue. This later followed by an amazing kick by Coen Marks. When the second quarter came around there were some wonderful tackles by Max Hargreaves and Caleb Harding.Also some great centre work by Asha Close. By the third quarter the Tigers were quite tired, but they pushed on. There was some great pressure by Arienne Holdsworth-Rose and some great teamwork and passes from the whole team. The fourth quarter arrived and the Tigers gave it everything they had; attacking the ball and defending it until the final siren rang. Even though the final score was 0-120, the Tigers walked off their ground happy with the effort they had made and with the phenomenal defensive work that took place. - Kira Bradley

■ The Under 10s came up against St Mary's at home this week. After the excitement of team photos the Tigers switched on to play a level of footy that matched how good they all looked. Coach Bek Klinge was chuffed: "Awesome to see them hand balling back and forth till they have a clear run to kick it" which was the focus at training last week. Again the Under 10s showed what a great bunch of kids they are by happily rotating in to help St Mary's out because of their lean numbers. ■ Yea came away with a huge win against Kinglake on Saturday. This game was to keep them alive for the remainder of the season and they did just that. Yea had an outstanding first quarter, showing a huge amount of pressure all the way down the court. Brooke didn't hold back defensively, which was amazing, she worked well with Bridget and Sarah who applied some great one on one pressure. Second quarter was yet again about possession and scoring off Kinglake's errors. Soph Stares came on into WD who applied some beautiful hands over. Whilst down the other end Sophie Watts came on into WA, who created space and offered for every pass. The Tigers built on their lead and had to build even more to come away with a solid win. Yea 25 to Kinglake 12. Half-time saw a change in defence with Soph Stares going into GK, working alongside her best friend Bridget. With Sarah being put back into WD, it meant that our defensive line was very young. This meant that Soph, Bridget and Sarah had to show leadership and a little determination to win that ball. And in saying that they didn't hold back! Sarah played her best quarter all year, taking some beautiful intercepts. Yea led by 10 at three-quarter time. Going into the last quarter leading by 10, meant that Yea had to work together and finish on a high. With some great defensive pressure by Kinglake saw them creep back into the game. Emily was having a sensational quarter in WD, really connecting with all players down court. Another Mum and daughter duo, Jude and Jordan, worked overtime in the midcourt, creating definite leads and presenting well to every ball. Whilst the ball movement outside the circle was being created by Jude and Jordan, shooters Jess and Fi were dominating. Coming off a solid first quarter, Tigers had to keep pushing and work on the little errors that were being created. Defensively, Deb came on into GK, working alongside Kim who was doing well. Ruby pushed out into WD to create some run through the centre. Jude kept her position, whilst Molly came on into WA which she opened up the attacking end. Half-time score: Yea 13 to Kinglake 10. Going into the last half, the message at half time was to play as a team and have a little more encouragement to your team mates. Kinglake applied much more pressure than what Yea did, but that didn't stop the Tigers in playing our game. Soon enough Kinglake coughed up possession on several occasions, but with silly errors Yeasoon coughed some winning balls up too. Tigers had some awesome 200 rebounds defensively and Emily once again didn't stop her one on one pressure out the front. Young Jordan had a run in Centre, who gave some wonderful balls in to Fi and Jess. Kinglake came back in that quarter, Yea lead by 1 goal. Only up by one goal meant that Tigers had to play composed netball and keep possession. Tigers had some great passages of play, really slowing down and taking care of every pass. Kim and Deb and Em were sensational, as Kinglake only scored three goals for that quarter. Fiona and Jess, who play consistent netball every week, were once again outstanding. Molly played an absolute amazing last quarter presenting for every pass and setting up beautifully on the circle for Jess and Fi. Well done! Yea will face Belgrave next who sit second on the ladder. ■ B-Grade came away with an important 21 goal win against a Kinglake side which never gave up or go away. Both sides struggled to settle early with turnovers frequent but it was Yea which got the first goals on the board through Reg and Reggie. Loz and Cindy N were fantastic in this first quarter, both taking some great intercepts in the centre third to restrict the amount of ball that went into the Kinglake attack. It was a low scoring 8-4 in Yea’s favour at quarter time. Yea played with a lot more aggression and attack on the ball after the break and whilst they still had room for improvement, they slowly began to put some space between the two sides on the scoreboard. Chels' pressure on her WA was superb and with her fellow defenders, Loz and Rhi, their pressure caused Kinglake to throw away possession on multiple occasions. Yea built on their half time lead in the third quarter and after a great first half in GA, Reg settled back nicely into GS and posted 13 goals in 15 minutes. She used the front space to her advantage, moving into perfect position to receive the passes that Cindy N and Reggie were delivering. Up 36-18 when the last quarter started, Yea struggled early on but as some new combinations came together they worked their way into a good rhythm. Rach and Kate were both important on their respective wings, linking up nicely over the centre third to bring the Tigers back into attack and finish off the game well. ■ It was a close match at Kinglake for the CGrade girls, but credit to all players on getting over the line in the end. It was a close first quarter, matching up to a 6-all score. C-Grade girls really had to take it up a notch. The defenders were keeping Kinglake's attacking line busy, with an enormous amount
D-GRADE
■ After a slow start to the game, Yea scored a convincing victory over Kinglake in very cold conditions early Saturday morning. Harriet and Rhi started the game well in WA and C creating plenty of drive into the attacking third where both Amy and Alicia were able to finish off their hard work with some good goals. Kinglake was playing well defensively so the Tigers had to work hard for every ball and make sure they cherished possession of the ball. With a five-goal lead at quarter-time it was important that Yea put its stamp on the game in the second quarter and they couldn't have done it better. The defensive trio of Jill, Leisa and Sarah were fantastic - deflecting, intercepting and pressuring every ball that came Kinglake’s way, allowing them only one goal for the quarter. Molly played an important role in GS, moving well and making great space for Alicia who finished off the great work from the rest of her team mates to take the Tigers to a 12-goal lead at half-time. Kinglake, to their credit never gave up and played a consistent second half, but when they made an error the Tigers capitalised on it. Ebony and Tess gave the Tigers fresh legs in the last quarter and they both were big contributors gaining plenty of ball and making wise decisions with their passing. ■ The Tigers took on the top side so they knew it was going to be a tough game. The girls mid court struggled to get in front which lost them the ball many times. Hannah C in GK managed to get a few deflects against a very experienced shooter. Sophie worked hard in C trying her best to bring the ball down to our shooters. Yea 1 - St Marys 22 The Tigers’ defensive pressure was better this quarter which resulted in more turnovers for them. The ball was relayed to the Yea goalers end more, but couldn't deliver the goals as St Mary’s defence was tight. Vivi took a great intercept which made their WA contact, this allowed us to score. 3-37 A few changes this quarter with Jordan W defending with Teagan and Ruby and Abbey coming on. This made Yea’s pace of the game a lot quicker. Yea managed to bring the ball down a little easier. Abbey used Jordyn O in WA and Ruby in C around the ring to position herself well to shoot. 7-49. Yea scored the first three goals this quarter which lifted their confidence. Ebony and Teagan had a lot more rebounds which helped Yea score a few more goals. All the girls put in 100 per cent in the last quarter which resulted in it being their best for the game but were beaten by a much stronger side. ■ 1st Quarter. A very even first quarter saw both teams work hard to get goals on the board. Holly worked strongly in WD with Jordyn all around the court as centre. Abby (GS) and Maggie (GA) shot well with 8 to finish the first quarter. Yea 8 to St Marys 9. 2nd Quarter. Melody performed strong in WA with Cassy (GK) and Ruby (GD) putting plenty if pressure on St Marys defending well. The slightly slippery conditions made it difficult for all the girls. Both teams scored 4 each for this quarter, very evenly matched. Yea 12 to St Marys 13. 3rd Quarter. An exciting start to the third quarter with our girls taking the lead. The pressure picked up and speed on the court increased. Excellent intercepts by Ruby (GD) and Cassy (GK) enabled the ball to get down to our goalers. Melody (C), Holly (WD) and Jordyn (WA) continued fighting in the centre of the court. Yea 19 to St Marys 17. 4th Quarter. Yea started the fourth quarter with a lead by 2, St Marys increased their performance while our girls made some errors. A great game to watch even though St Marys came

Yea put great pressure on St Mary's, assisted by Bonnie in WD and Chloe in GD, making it hard for them to get the ball down the court. The three Bridies on court worked well in attack.Yea 2, St Mary's 13 Q3. St Mary's took the first goal for the quarter but Yea was fighting back with a great pass from Finn (GA). Bridie H and Maddie put great pressure on in the ring. Finn ran out for a centre pass, but St Mary's got it back. A great pass from Haylee to Tilly at Yea's goal end.. Yea 2, St Mary's 23 Q4. All Yea's young guns were on court for the last quarter and were showing great defensive skills. First goal to St Mary's. Milly was passing the ball out of the centre quickly, the young Tigers were making the St Mary's girls work hard. Yea girls did well to get the ball, but in the end St Mary's were too strong. ■ The AFLYarra Ranges League Round 10 marked the start of the second half of the 2017 season last Saturday and the Rebels travelled to Belgrave for two games of football, and to South Belgrave for four games of netball, the oval in good condition with its beige colored winter grass after a little overnight rain. RESERVES The Reserves again were a patched up side due to injuries and players unavailable through work and other commitments but it was pleasing to see Under 16s player Tom Rouget playing in his first match with older brother Daniel, proud father Simon even having a rush of blood to the head in the rooms before the game asking if he could play. The Rebels also welcomed new player Scott Isaacs for his first game at the Club and we welcomed another former junior James Fulton who has returned to live in the town. In a similar start to last week, the home side converted its opportunities in front of goal and kicked four unanswered goals in the first quarter. The Rebels lifted the work rate in the second quarter and scored their first goal with a snap around the corner by James Fulton whilst keeping the Magpies to two goals for the quarter. The third quarter was another arm wrestle with the Rebels adding another goal from a set shot by Matt Herridge and restricting the Magpies to another two goals. By the last change David Bourke had gone to hospital for stitches to an injury on his face and several other players were injured, the Magpies taking advantage in the last quarter adding five unanswered goals to run out winners 13.15 (93) to 2.2 (14). The Seniors made one change to the team beaten last week by Seville with Zach Heaslip coming into the side to replace Tom Halligan. Also in a repeat of last week, the Magpies got on the scoreboard early but the Rebels settled in the second half of the quarter to trail five goals to two at the first break. A determined effort and lift in intensity saw the Rebels add six goals to four in the second quarter to give the Magpies something to think about at half-time as the Rebels needed to reorganize as both Jack Elkington and Ben Woollard were finished for the day leaving only one player available for rotations. The Magpies edged ahead in the third quarter kicking four goals to three to take a 14 point lead in to the last quarter. The last quarter was a great display of football by both teams as the Magpies added a couple of goals and the Rebels responded with a couple of goals to narrow the margin before the Rebels momentum saw another couple of goals and take the lead by nine points but the Magpies replied with another goal. The Rebels chased, tackled and moved the ball efficiently as the play rebounded between the backlines before the experienced Magpies settled and scored to regain the lead and take out the game at the final siren, 19.13 (127) to 17.10 (112).
