■ The funeral service for respected Yea farmer Ron Drysdale will be held at the Yea FootballNetball Clubrooms at 1pm on Friday (Aug. 4). Burial will take place at the Yea Cemetery. Afternoon-tea will be served at the clubrooms and the family will return there after the burial. Ronald Douglas Drysdale, of ‘Olivedale’, Yea, 91, passed away on Tuesday (July 25). He was born on December 10, 1925. He and his late wife, Betty, were married for 62 years. A former Yea Shire Councillor, Ron Dryssale was known for his community spirit, volunteering in district organisations including Yea CFAand the Yea and District Historical Society. He was a familiar sight, maintaining the Yea Recreation Reserve. Ron Drysdale had been a prominent member of the Duke of Clarence Lodge, Yea, joining in 1952, and serving as Master in 1962-63. He fought hard - although unsuccessfully - to have the Yea Masonic Temple transferred to community ownership when the Lodge disbanded in October 2015. He was father of Geoff, Stewart and Jenny. father-in-law to Kaye, Anna and Lloyd. He was grandfather to 11, and had seven great-grandchildren.

What will happen to Yea Hospital’s $4 million? Local Briefs Tasers
■ Police in Kilmore and Wallan will be equipped with Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs or Tasers) from this week. The regional rollout to 24-hour police stations began early last year with general duties and highway patrol officers being trained to carry and use Tasers following extensive trials in pilot stations.

At home ■ Yea’s final home game for the 2017 season will be held this Saturday (Aug. 5) when the Tigers will be hosts to teams from Alexandra.
■ Yea and District Memorial Hospital has reserves of more than $4 million, according to the last published annual report (2014-15) available at its website. Those reserves - much of it raised by the Yea district community - could be transferred into a merged entity with Seymour Health, as early as next month. In late May, the Hospital’s Board Chairman, Kristin Michaels, gave notice that the Yea Hospital Board was investigating an administrative merger with Seymour Health. The planned merger comes as Yea’s contract with Goulburn Valley Health comes to end. GV Health provides back-office services such as CEO, payroll and information technology. Ms Michaels told The Local Paper in May that a ‘due diligence’ process would take place over nine weeks.

The Yea community has since heard little about the planned merger. A Merger Matters newsletter was published in June, and proposed CEO Chris McDonnell was guest speaker at a Hospital-Auxiliary annual meeting. Ms Michaels told The Local Paper the reserves would appear on the balance sheet of the proposed mergerd body as belonging to Yea. She said the new Board would comprise half its numbers from Yea. Industry observers say the composition of the Board would be unlikely to stay in such a 50:50 status beyond a few years. Yea Hospital activities would represent less than a quarter of the total operations of the merged body. The Local Paper understands that the proposal already has the nod of Victorian Labor Government’s Health Minister, Jill Hennessy. Hospitals’ statement, Page 11
Be proud of local achievers: Kindred ■ Former Yea High School Principal Bruce Kindred says that the local community should be justly proud of its own achievers. “For a small town with a small high school, there have been a great number of success stories, including many students who have become solid citizens for the town and in town,” said Mr Kindred, a former Yea Shire President. “Several town businesses are run by former students: a hotel, post office, butcher’s shop and the clothing store. “There are several tradesmen - plumbers, carpenters and a

refrigeration business. “A wing of the Grace Bennetts Centre contains a homegrown collection of a doctor, a physiotherapist, a podiatrist and a counsellor. “We even have a home-grown Member of Parliament. “Add to this list who have moved away: engineers, doctors, teachers, nurses, paramedics, diesel mechanic for Caterpillar Australia, police, etc. including a chemical engineer who has worked on nickel refineries in Western Australia, New Caledonia, Newfoundland and now in Madagascar. “And another doctor on the way with
Nicole Chisholm close to completing her studies.” Mr Kindred said the two latest additions to the old students’ list from Yea High School were Scott Handsaker and Andrew Kindred. Scott has been appointed as CEO of a new internet start-up company called Cyrise. Andrew has been involved with a number of major tunnels project internationally. “We should all be very proud of these success stories from the students of our town. “Good things do happen to those who want to succeed,” Mr Kindred said.

● Ron Smith ■ Former Alexandra Secondary College teacher Ron Smith is making fast recovery after suffering a heart attack 12 days ago. Smith, 71, is now involved in corporate strategy and public relations. He is married to the former Shirley Baynes of Cathkin. Ron was heavily involved in the local government mergers of the 1990s. He was an advisor to Nillumbik Shire Council at the time.

■ There were just six people in the public gallery of the Murrindindi Shire Council meeting at Yea last Wednesday night (July 26). And three of us were reporters (the opposition sent two !) As Long Shots predicted, it was a short meeting ... a few minutes over an hour. Long Shots has spent hundreds of hours in the Yea Council chambers over the decades since 1984. As we looked around the table, we wondered - with the exception of Council staffer Karen Girvan - if any Councillor or staff member had any connection with the Shire that extended more than a few years. It would have been appropriate to hear a moment of respect for the late Ron Drysdale, a past Councillor.

Planning changes ■ There will be changes to simplified planning provisions introduced after the Black Saturday fires, Cr Margaret Rae told last week’s meeting of Murrindindi Council. “With the impending cessation of the Temporary Planning Provisions – a very simplified and streamlined process introduced following the 2009 bushfires – that will occur on September 30 this year, the Planning Unit has been undertaking much work to ensure that our community remains informed about the options available to them,” Cr Rae said. “The Temporary Accommodation Provisions introduced at the same time will cease next year on September 30, 2018. “Following a detailed review of properties lost in the 2009 fires an analysis of those that have al-

Kinglake memory ■ Merle Rainey writes to The Local Paper about an item in our 80 YearsAgo column. “My late cousin’s wife, Jean Jarvie, sent me this article which was in the Kinglake news section about Mr and Mrs Ron Pyle receiving congratulations on the birth of a daughter. “I am the daughter. I was born on July 4, 1937. My name is Merle. I live in Sale, Victoria. “My grandmother and family lived in Kinglake for many years. “My mother and father were married in Kinglake. “As children we visited Kinglake a lot.My last visit was after the fires which was sad. “This was a nice surprise when I received the cutting from paper and it brought back many memories.” Mrs Rainey said.

■ Former Yea Shire President Arnie Exton was the candidate to miss out on a seat at the Council elections held 30 years ago, despite the fact that he received by far the most first preference votes. Exton scored 634 first preference votes, followed by the other Kinglake candidate Ray Hutchison (491 votes), Cr Bill Wilson (477), Bruce Kindred (331) and Ian Macintyre (229).
Toilets disgrace
■ A woman phoned 3LO broadcaster Michael Schildberger to express her view that the Yea public toilets were a disgrace. The toilets had been in heavy demand by tourists on a busy snow trip weekend. The toilets were being cleaned daily, and twice on weekends and public holidays, said Acting Shire Secretary Nick Zandbergs.

■ State Treasurer Rob Jolly was to open the Daiwa Nar Darak complex at Molesworth at an invitation-only function. The complex was owned by Daiwa Securities, a large Japanese banking institution, which had links with the ANZ Bank.

Vandals hit ■ Yea Primary School teachers discovered taht windows at the school had been smashed by vandals. Broken glass littered the outside of classrooms. A toilet door was also broken.
Woolshed dance ■ Yea’s MonsterWoolshed Dance was being planned 30 years ago, with the Bandiwallop Bush Dance engaged to play at Peter McLeish’s Woolshed, Whittlesea-Yea Rd.
$5000 to go ■ The $70,000 target for the Yea Community Centre (Indoor Recreation Centre) at Yea High School required only $5000 more to be collected, in August 1987. A September 8 deadline was set. The Yea Livestock IndustryAppeal, run by the Rotary Club of Yea, contributed $6000 towards the Appeal. Donations could be made at the Yea branch of the State Bank.
Fire false alarm ■ Twol dozen volunteer firefighters answered the call of the Yea fire siren when local resident Ed Davies spotted smoke coming from the back of the premises of Quinlan Motors, Station St, Yea. Ed smashed the glass on the fire alarm at the Yea Fire Station, to ring the siren. It was soon confirmed that the smoke was from a “controlled burn”.

Chronicle, Standard reader numbers plunge
■ Official annual circulation figures for The Yea Chronicle and the Alexandra-EildonMarysville Standard have shown an alarming drop. The figures have been released by the Victorian Country Press Association. The figures show that the once-significant Yea Chronicle now has a circulation of only 524 copies each week. This is a fall of 17.7 per cent in just 12 months from 637 copies. The Yea Chronicle’s readership has dropped by 38.4 per cent in two years. Sales were 850 copies, two years ago. The readership statistics are not much better for the Alex-

The Standard readership figures have dropped by 26.3 per cent over the past two years, from 2100 copies to 1548. Meanwhile, The Local Paper has increased its circulation lead, with a 32.2 per cent increase in circulation over the year. The print run for The Local Paper has increased from 2722 copies to 3600 - a rise of 32.2 per cent. “The Local Paper is reliable, trusted, respected and affordable,” said Editor Ash Long.

Wire rope to extend to Cathkin: McLeish
■ Cindy McLeish, State Liberal MLA for Eildon, says locals have been kept in the dark about the Andrews Labor Government's plan to extend wire rope barriers on the Goulburn Valley Hwy from Molesworth to Cathkin. "Yet again the Andrews Government is surprising local motorists with more road disruption and delays without talking to them beforehand," Ms McLeish said. The Andrews Labor Government announced an additional 3.2 kilometres of centreline safety barrier would be installed along the Goulburn Valley Hwy from Molesworth to Cathkin. This follows questions to the Minister raised by Ms McLeish
● Cindy McLeish MLA in the Victorian Parliament in early May, asking whether or not the Government had any plans to extend the barriers. "I have been approached by a number of constituents in the
area who have heard that this is going to be the case: one, that they will be extended to Cathkin and another that they will be extended to Yarck," Ms McLeish said. Under Parliament's rules the Minister for Roads and Road Safety had 30 days to respond to the question but after more than two months, no response has been provided. "Our community deserves better from this Government. “When questions are asked, questions should be answered straight up there and then. The Minister has deliberately concealed the scope of these works from the public and they must be allowed to have their say," Ms McLeish said.

EDITORIAL COMMENT Wednesday, August 2, 2017 Dear Ms Abbey We again write regarding the placement of Murrindindi Shire Council's advertising in local newspapers, which should be aimed at best practice communication with the most possible number of residents across the municipality. We understand that Murrindindi Council last formally made its appointment of various local newspapers (all owned by Newspaper House Pty Ltd) more than four years ago (October 2012). To the best of our knowledge, there has not been a tender for local newspaper advertising in the intervening period. The Victorian Local Government Best Practice Procurement Guidelines seek to "achieve high standards of fairness, openness, probity, trans parency, risk management and accountability". The Guidelines state: "Councils should expect the Victorian AuditorGeneral’s Office and the Victorian Ombudsman may assess their practices and report against these guidelines." In regard to open and fair competition, the Guidelines state: "All prospective suppliers/vendors must be treated (and be seen to be treated) fairly in an open and transparent manner with the same access to information about the procurement to enable them to submit prices/quotations/tenders on the same basis. “Councils must adequately test the market in a consistent manner without any bias, or perception of bias, so that potential suppliers and the public have confidence in the outcome." Murrindindi Shire Council, under your supervision, has not done this. The Guidelines state: "In all commercial dealings, the highest standards of honesty must be observed. “Councils must conduct their business in a fair, honest and open manner, demonstrating the highest levels of integrity consistent with the public interest." We believe that The Local Paper has been denied a natural justice and fairness in its ongoing approaches to be considered for Council's advertising purchasing. A number of our emails to you and Council on the subject have gone without reply. The Council has only purchased a handful of small advertisements with The Local Paper in the past 18 months. All of your major local advertising purchases have been made with newspapers owned by Newspaper House Pty Ltd (Alexandra Standard, Yea Chronicle, North Central Re view) without any tender opportunity afforded to others. We believe that Council's ap proach is in serious danger of breaching the spirit of the procurement guidelines. We believe that the monies spent on Council's local advertising in the past 4½ years go well beyond what is permitted in officers' discretionary purchasing, and exceed the maxi-

The Guidelines provide that the expenditure needs to be assessed as a total amount across the 4½-years, not on an annual basis. Our company has invested close to $1 million in establishing the largest circulating and best read weekly local newspaper in Murrindindi Shire . We contribute to the local economy, and have created significant local work opportunities within the municipality. We note that at no time has there been any approach to us from Council's Economic Development team. The only description for Council's general approach to our local business is "ice cold". The Local Paper has enjoyed a 32.2 per cent increase in readership in the past 12 months. Our print run has increased from 2722 to 3600 copies every week. Plus, we have more than 1000 unique readers each week at our website. More local people in Murrindindi Shire trust The Local Paper for local news than any other media. Official figures (source: Victorian Country Press Association website) show the Yea Chronicle circulation has dropped by 17.7 per cent in the past 12 months (637 copies, down to 524 copies). Alexandra Standard circulation dropped by 6.1 per cent: 1649 copies, down to 1548. Over the past two years, Ye a Chronicle copies have dropped by 38.4 per cent (850 copies to 524). Alexandra Standard copies have dropped by 26.3 per cent (2100 copies to 1548). We believe that the Council has fallen well short of the best practice guidelines. We believe that the Council has minimised public scrutiny by placing its advertisements only in local newspapers with cover prices, and a paywall website. This is grossly unfair to local families with limited incomes, and to local disadvantaged people. The two major newspapers chosen by Council for its advertising are in fast decay, circulation-wise. The combined circulation of the two newspapers chosen by Council is 2072 copies, which is far short of the municipality's total number of families. We call on Council to immediately put its local advertising contracts to tender. We are mindful of the avenues open to us with the Victorian Auditor-General, Ombudsman and the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate . Equally important is the perception of the public of Murrindindi as to whether you and Council are providing a "fair go", as you are required to do, and if you are genuinely trying to maximise your communication with all stakeholders in the municipality. - Ash Long, Editor

Cash for hospital
■ Mansfield District Hospital will receive an additional $275,000 after the State Government announced its hospital budget spending last week. Overall, the hospital will receive just over $8.5 million for its annual running costs, with the extra funds boosting the income by 3.3 per cent. Hospital Chief Executive Officer Cameron Butler told the Mansfield Courier that the funding was particularly welcome as the number of people treated at the hospital had risen in the past year. - Mansfield Courier
60 objections
■ More than 60 objections to the proposed ammunition factory at the site of the old Euroa Gun Club in Halsalls Lane, Creightons Creek, have been lodged with the Shire of Strathbogie to date. The vast majority of the objections - which came from a wide variety of sources and are available for viewing at the shire offices relate to concerns over increased traffic, noise pollution, and increased fire risk. Objectors ranged from local farmers, Landcare groups, CFA volunteers and business owners, and all cited similar reasons for their stance against the proposal. - Euroa Gazette

Attack on wasps ■ Murrindindi Shire Council is working with community groups to kick off the first phase of a plan of attack on European wasps. Council is starting with the wasp queens. According to Murrindindi Shire Cr Rebecca Bowles, the Shire experienced a particularly bad wasp season last year. Cr Bowles holds th portfolio for Natural Environment and Climate Change. "These nasty pests really made their mark on our enjoyment of the great outdoors last season,” said Cr Bowles. “They gather wherever there is food. This really impacted on our local businesses, including those who offer outdoor dining," Cr Bowles said. "In Europe, the winter cold kills off most of the wasps except for the queen, but here in Murrindindi Shire, it's not always cold enough to kill off the nests."

Visit to Paradise
■ Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Pittaway, of Wollert, returned last week after a most interesting motor tour to Queensland. They were away a little over seven weeks, and during that period covered 3357 miles. The journey to Brisbane was made via the Prince's Highway to Sydney, and the coast road to Brisbane. They returned by the inland route via Tamworth, Glen Innes, Goulburn, Canberra and Albury. Every mile of the way, said Mr. Pittaway, was enjoyable, and they had rain on only one day for the whole trip. They were not travelling all the time, but spent three weeks at Paradise, near Brisbane, which was crowded with surfers and sun bathers (while we were shivering under a succession of frosts). and two weeks at Southport (Queensland).

Kristin Michaels, Board Chair, Yea and District Memorial Hospital, said it was important to ensure that the due diligence process was accurate and thorough. "The board of Yea and District Memorial Hospital is not entering this process lightly. “We want the community to be reassured that the diligence review is following a meticulous and thorough process and is therefore something that cannot be rushed," Ms Michaels said. Annie Fletcher-Nicholls, Chair, Seymour Health, agreed and said the review will accurately reflect the service streams, governance and operational issues across both health services. "The information gathered during the process will be used to identify service gaps, areas of service overlap, and risks and strengths of proceeding with a partnership/ merger. “The data collected will form the basis of a proposal to the Department of Health and Human Services enabling a decision to be reached regarding the proposed merger," Ms Fletcher-Nicholls said. “For further information, please visit the websites of Seymour Health and Yea and District Memorial Hospital,” the statement said.

Fire mapping
■ New bushfire mapping will have implications for planning in Murrindindi Shire, Cr Margaret Rae told last week’s Council meeting held in Yea. “An issue which may make matters more complex going forward is the State Government’s intention to introduce revisions to bushfire hazard mapping that will update the Bushfire Management Overlay,” Cr Rae said. “Once introduced this will impact on many more properties in our shire than currently. Advice on this is also being given to potentially affected owners.”

■ Cr Jackie Ashe has been discharged from a short stay in hospital. Murrindindi Shire Mayor, Cr Charlie Bisset, offered best wishes at last week’s Council meeting. Cr Ashe moved to the Shire in 2002. Her background is hospitality and tourism and she has volunteered on a number of community associations and event committees. These include Murrindindi Food and Wine Inc, World’s Longest Lunch in Marysville, Cittaslow Yea, Grow Food Network and the Community Garden Project. Cr Ashe and her husband live on a farm where they operate a farm store and restaurant.

Last week’s event saw Murrindindi Council supporting through its Doing Business Better Program, with funding from a bushfire recovery grant from Regional Development Victoria. "Council was really pleased to have been able to support this event through the provision of funding to the organisers Murrindindi Inc - they did a great job pulling this big event together with more than 180 people attending and many others watching a livestream online via Facebook,” Cr Bisset said.

Website slows ■ The Kinglake Ranges News website had just 164 visits over the past week, according to a counter on the internet site. July was the official launch month for the website. There seems to have been less than a half-dozen fresh news reports from July 930. One report was about that website proprietor’s untimely disconnection by Telstra, prior to linking with the NBN. With launch promises of extensive football reports, readers were unable to find any coverage at all of the July 22 KinglakePowelltwon football and netball matches.

■ Yea Wetlands volunteer Bob Glenister supervised his seventh annual National Tree Day on Sunday, prior to signing off from these responsibilities. Yea Scouts planted hundreds of trees and shrubs in an area just opened at the back of the Wetlands.

For almost 10 years, Fleur Long was a nurse at the Rosebank Extended Care Centre facility at Yea and District Memorial Hospital. Their children, Kristi and James, were students at Yea Primary School, and involved themselves in community activities such as Guides, the Yea Water Tigers, basketball and football. Ash Long expanded his newspaper interests with titles in Whittlesea, Kinglake, Diamond Valley, Kilmore, Seymour and Nagambie. As well as The Local Paper, the family owns the Melbourne Observer. The newspapers are respected for their energetic reporting.
45 years of LOCAL newspaper experience When it comes to reporting local news in Murrindindi Shire, you cannot beat the 45-year personal experience of Local Paper editor Ash Long. Ash first started reporting for the community as a ‘stringer’ for the Whittlesea Post newspaper in 1973. His early reporting rounds included the Whittlesea, Kinglake and Diamond Valley areas. Ash is now in his 45th year of local paper reporting. (He started as a boy in newspapers in 1969, 48 years ago,) Ash took on a family tradition. His mother-in-

law, Isobell Tunzi, was a Whittlesea Post news contributor from the 1950s. In the early 1980s, Ash Long was Manager of eight Leader newspapers including the Whittlesea Post and Diamond Valley News. In 1984, Ash and Fleur Long purchased The Yea Chronicle business from Tom Dignam. They began many community involvements. Ash was a Charter Member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Yea, being named a Paul Harris Fellow. He remains an active Freemason, presented with the honour of Past Grand Tyler. The Local Paper enjoys a reputation for honesty, reliability and courage.
Soon after the tragic Black Saturday fires in 2009, Ash Long started a special purpose local weekly newspaper, The Phoenix. More than $1.3 million in advertising space was donated to local businesses to assist them in their recovery from the disaster. The Phoenix was designed to assist local families and businesses with the rebuilding and recovery of the bushfire region including Murrindindi, and surrounding municipalities including Mansfield, Mitchell, Nillumbik, Whittlesea andYarra Ranges. The Phoenix was in publication for 18 months. It was a progenitor for The Local Paper which commenced on February 17, 2016 due to public demand. The Local Paper continues in the same community spirit. Free ‘What’s On’ advertising is available for all local clubs and organisations in Murrindindi Shire. held a slim advantage at quarter time before the Tigers proceeded to dominate the second term, with the ball living in the visitors attacking half. Unfortunately, Yea were unable to make the most of their opportunities and squandered several set shots at goal, booting 1.8 for the quarter to trail by a point at half time. Thornton took full advantage of the wind in the third, slamming on four goals to two and opening up a 17 point buffer heading into the final term. Yea outscored the Boners in the late stages of the match but it proved too great a lead to reel in, as Thornton ran away with a deserved victory. Harrison Jarvie (one goal) was stellar once again in the midfield, ably supported by Riley Aldous, while Lachie Beattie booted two majors in a dominant display in the air and on the ground. Andrew Chisholm was outstanding in defence, constantly intercepting opposition forays into attack, James Ryan worked hard and Eddie Neilson was composed in the back half. The Tigers shot themselves in the foot with poor ball use going inside 50 and an inability to work both ways when Thornton transitioned the ball from attack to defence. Thornton-Eildon 11.5 (71) defeated Yea 9.8 (62) Yea's finals hopes have been dashed following a tight nine-point defeat at the hands of Thornton-Eildon. The Tigers needed a win to stay in the hunt for the top five but it was clear from the opening bounce that the Boners had come to play as they booted four goals to zero in the first term. Things looked like getting ugly when Thornton slotted the first major of the second term before the visitors fired back with five of the next six goals to cut the deficit to 12 points at the major break. Yea continued to press, controlling the third term and cutting the margin back to less than a goal, before the Boners managed to hold on for the win. Lachie White was impassable in defence, picking off kicks inside 50 at will, while Jack Sundblom was strong in the air and repelled Thornton all day long. Lindon Young (two goals) found plenty of the football on the wing, Darcy Pell controlled the ruck, Jaryed Garlick provided great run and carry and Don Ali chipped in with two majors. YEA NETBALL REPORT D-GRADE
■ It was a strong start from the Tigers, with all seven players working together well. Sarah Lobley was yet again consistent throughout the game, as well as Leisa Peters who was outstanding. Sarah and Leisa are combining well defensively and work well with Kate Broadway and Jill Hargreaves who usually play the WD position. Harriet Vlamis started off in the Centre position, driving strong and directing the play well. She combined well with Ebony Keenan who started off in WA. They both fed beautifully to goalers, Alicia O'Connor and Amy Smith-Jones. Yea led the first quarter, 9 goals to 1. The second quarter wasn't the Tigers best quarter. With a few changes it was expected that they would start off slow, however, it was like that for the whole quarter. The defensive end stayed the same, with only a few changes in the attacking end. Jill played Centre, who worked with India Gillings in WA. Alicia swapped the goal shooter positon with Molly Toulson. Molly and Amy were forced wide this quarter, which meant forced balls were occurring. Yea led 12-4. Going into the third, Yea had to really put the foot down. They started to implement some good one on one pressure, which forced Thornton Eildon to make some silly errors. Yea took the game on and it showed on the score board. Having 10 girls, meant coach Deb had to swap it up several times, trying to keep it fair and in the right combinations. The last half was awesome to watch with all attacking and defending combinations working so well together. Lots of voice and teamwork got them over the line, well done girls. B-GRADE
■ The sun was shining bright in Thornton for all three games of netball. All girls were pumped to finally play in some warmer conditions and in saying that, they came out ready to take on the game. Amanda Akers started in GS, working with coach Cindy Hayes in GA. They both adjusted nicely to each other, working hard to find the front space. Kate Elliott played a solid half in WA, moving well and creating space for Regina Bell who started off in Centre and rising star Molly Jarvie in the second. Defensively, Lauren Cronk was so strong with gaining possession of the ball, forcing her opponent to make errors. She teamed up with both Rach Normington and RhiAldou who were also having a day out. They all read off each other beautifully, moving the ball smoothly to the midcourter's and the goalers. The overall game was very consistent from all players, all building on the combinations and most of all working as a team. From attacking to defending and defending to attacking, everyone did their job and did to the best they could. It was amazing to see the amount of leadership and encouragement from the B-Grade side on Saturday. Well done girls on a wonderful win against Thronton Eildon on the weekend. Keep up the great work. ing some space for one another. Soph Watts was amazing in WA, working hard and feeding well. She worked with Chelsea Spagonolo through the midcourt, who was unstoppable all the way down the court. Chelsea worked well defensively, with Sarah Armstrong, who had beautiful hands over. In the circle both Bridget O'Dwyer and Brooke Lloyd were hot on their toes, getting around their players and gaining possession. It saw Yea out to a 2 goal lead at quarter-time. At quarter-time, two changes were made at the wing positions. Megan Leatham came on into WA, showing some great energy and determination. Sophie Stares came on into WD, showing some fantastic on one-one pressure for the remainder of the game. She worked well with Bridget and Brooke who were yet again outstanding all game. Third quarter, Megan saw herself in the GA position, who worked with Meg. They started off slow but soon enough they worked themselves out and from then on were unstoppable. Soph W went back on into WA but unfortunately came off with an injury, which saw Chels fill her spot. Sarah was put into Centre where she adjusted nicely to both Soph and Chels during the quarter. The last quarter was the Tigers best quarter for the game. Everyone showed a bit more determination and most of all had some fun. After a slow start to the third quarter Ryley Norris returned to the ground and it was no coincidence that the Rebels lifted from that point, brother Brayden then took control of the game with three consecutive goals (including his 50th for the season), Ben Cooper marked a well weighted kick and goaled from well out and then Brayden Norris added his fourth goal for the quarter after missing the mark but recovering like a cat. Sam Woollard kicked the Rebels 12th after receiving a well directed pass before Kinglake got the last goal of the quarter but Alex now held a commanding 43-point lead at the last change. Alex continued their dominance even against the breeze in the last quarter with six further goals, two to Ryley Norris and a seventh to Brayden with Scott Hill 2 and Scott Heveren joining the goal kickers. The Alex defence had continued to play tight only allowing the visitors two late goals, Alex winning 18.13 (121) to Kinglake 7.8 (50). Best players included Brayden (7 goals) and Ryley Norris (3 goals), Ben Cooper, Scott Heveren, Jake Steyger and Jack Elkington. The win means now Alexandra are in fifth position and a game clear with three games to go. ■ Yea travelled to Broadford on Sunday for a game they were expected to win despite a couple of players unavailable. Without knowing the reasons why, the game was a ridiculous 38 minutes late starting ,no excuse though for a less than perfect first half where the Tigers trailed by 16 points..Yea 2.4 (16) to Broadford 5.2 (32). Yea fought back in the third through the hard work of J. Harry,Wilsmore, J. Harding, J. Aldous and a band of others lifted to give the Tigers a sniff at ¾-time.Yea 5.10 (40) to Broadford 8.2 (50). Broadford goaled early in the last but the Tigers weren't done with yet asBeattie and the improvoving Jackson Harding gave Yea a slender lead. Injury began to take a toll on Yea with half the team hobbling or unable to to take further part in the game, it seemed like Broadford had players everywhere and were able to go forward to goal and take back the lead,with Yea attacking again as the siren rang. ■ The AFLYarra Ranges League Round 15 of the 2017 season last Saturday saw the Rebels return to Rebel Park and host Kinglake for two games of football and four games of netball. The weather was fine as the forecast strong winds had not yet arrived and the ground was in really good condition after 20 mm of Thursday night rain. RESERVES The Reserves, holding fourth position on the ladder and looking for a win to keep third and the double chance in the Finals a possibility, made six changes and took on an under manned Kinglake team. Alex started well and had six individual goal kickers in the first quarter whilst the visitors' only score resulted from two 50-metre penalties. Jedd Hamill had a good second quarter with four goals whilst Ben Podger-Carroll, Nick Waugh, Brent McDonald and Conor Heaslip were providing the skill and drive in the middle of the ground whilst up forward Scott Isaacs also was effective. In defence Corey Jack was well on top of his opponent (no one) and must have had 40 possessions. Well done to the Kinglake players who although short on numbers never stopped trying, Alexandra going on to a 23.17 (155) to 1.2 (8) win. SENIORS The Seniors, including Jack Elkington, Jack Goonan, Will Goonan and Jasper Rouget to replace Nathan Dundas, Brent McDonald, Tom Rouget and Nick Waugh, faced a major challenge. With both senior teams on 32 points, this game was crucial as the winner would take fifth position on the ladder with the Finals only three games away, Kinglake having comfortably won the previous encounter at home by 38 points. Alexandra won the toss and began to the town end but the visitors were first into attack, the Alex defence then rebounding to give Jake Steyger a mark but he was offline as was Brayden Norris from his first mark. Young Jasper Rouget kicked the first two Alex goals before a free in the goal square enabled Kinglake to goal easily. Winning the ball from the centre, Alex next went forward and Steyger tapped cleverly to Ryley Norris for a goal as Alex was tackling strongly in defence restricting the Kinglake forwards. Lee Ragg assisted Callum Tranter for the Rebels' fifth goal and Brayden Norris added to his list late in the term giving Alex a 27-point lead at the first change. The umpires were handing out plenty of 50 metre penalties and Alex failed to make use of their share until Brayden Norris kicked his second goal. With a player sent off Alex struggled to go
