Movie character ■ “Yea man Max Baynes reminds us that the main character in A Town Like Alice, played by Bryan Brown, is based on Jim Edwards, who was well known by Murrindindi district folk, until he left in the 1950s. “Max said Mr Edwards had a property near the Narangi Trout Farm at Murrindindi. He said Mr Edwards lived at Kingaroy after moving from his Mt Edgar property near Marble Bar. He had two sons and two daughters.”

‘Paper misleads ■ Yea Shire President Cr David Lawson slammed The Yea Chronicle for “misleading reporting” over an air flight by three Yea Councillors to Nhill, to check on the credentials of CEO applicant Peter Mangan. The paper replied: “Let us solve the question of who is right, and who is wrong, quite simply. 5 accidents ● Yea historian Allan Thorley has unearthed a July 1914 photo of the Yea township, taken from Constitution Hill, overlooking The Parade. “It was used by the telephone company which was installing phone towers around the state to find the best locations.” The photo ended up in a consignment shop in California, whose owner contacted Alan to see if it was of interest.

In Our Schools Trip to Uni

■ Year 12 Chemistry students at Alexandra Secondary College, along with three students from Euroa Secondary College and their teacher, will travel to Latrobe University in Bundoora to put their chemical analysis skills to the test. Using the latest technologies, they will analyse phosphate content in water samples, iron content in foods and organic compounds in a petroleum mixture. They will learn how the complex analytical machines work and how they are used in every day testing. As part of the workshop, the students will be taken to the LIMS building, a $100 million facility with state of the art teaching and research laboratories. This excursion will help prepare students for their upcoming SACs and the end of year exam.

Somers Camp

Tree planting at Strath Ck ■ Strath Creek Landcare members were part of a large group of more than 60 people, who worked together on National Tree Day to plant 450 trees and understorey plants The working bee was held at the home of the Auty family, who own land alongside the King Parrot Creek in Strath Creek. Strath Creek Landcare group has been working for years to revegetate this creek, in order to improve water quality and to improve the habitat for local birds and animals. King parrots, which have not been seen at the Flowerdale end of he creek for quite some time, have now moved back into the area. Landcare Group's revegetation efforts have brought this about. Large sections of the creek from Coonans Bridge at Flowerdale to Richards Bridge in Strath Creek have been fenced out and protected either by landowners or by the Strath Creek Landcare Group on their behalf. The Landcare Group subcontracts to the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority to do both fencing and planting, thus providing a healthy working income for the group. Many children were among the workers at this planting day. They enjoyed the day and the chance to help with planting and guarding. The King family from Broadford brought along two Japanese students who were staying with them, and the girls worked enthusiastically and enjoyed the outdoor experience.

■ Inspectors from RSPCA Victoria last week executed a warrant at a Murrindindi Shire property, seizing 21 cats. Inspectorate Team Leader, Eastern Region, Guy Gorman, said the warrant was obtained following an earlier inspection of the property. The location is belived to be Alexandra. “Following our inspection, we concluded that the living conditions were detrimental to the cats’ welfare,” Mr Gorman said. “Therefore, we sought and obtained court permission to enter the dwelling and seize animals determined to be at immediate risk with their welfare seriously compromised.” Three RSPCA Victoria Inspectors executed the warrant with the assistance of Victoria Police and the Murrindindi Council. The 21 domestic cats, of varying ages and sex, were transported to an RSPCA Victoria facility where they are receiving veterinary care, including treatment for cat flu and fleas. “As the matter is still under investigation, we are unable to provide any further information at this stage,” an RSPCA spokeswomen said. ★ Murrindindi’s Cr Sandice McAulay said there were some broader lessons for the community as a whole in this joint operation with the RSPCA, VicPol and Council. “This joint operation highlights the need for people to consider their responsibilities as pet owners,” Cr McAulay said. “Unless you are a registered breeder, all dogs and cats should be de-sexed. Not only is the animal registration cheaper, but desexed animals are much easier to control, train and look after than ‘entire’ animals. “While this was an extreme situation, this joint operation is a timely reminder about the need for responsible pet ownership. “It also happens to coincide with Council’s release of a draft Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP). “The DAMP, which is open for public comment until September 1, discusses the responsibilities and costs of owning cats and dogs. “ It also proposes a number of new ideas for ensuring responsible pet management in the Shire. “Council wants to hear from the community about the DAMP, including a number of issues which will be of interest to all domestic animal owners, including whether Council should consider cat curfews to protect native wildlife and whether ‘off-lead’ areas are a good idea for dogs in the Shire. “Council’s draft DAMP is available to download from Council’s website (www.murrindindi.vic.gov.au/DAMP) and is also available at all Council offices. “There is also an online survey available on our website until September 1. Store robbery

■ Cunning crooks targeted a Hurstbridge garden supply store and drove off with a thousand dollars and four vehicles. Driver arrested

■ A man is expected to be charged after he was caught by police for allegedly driving dangerously. The 28-year-old Meadow Heights man was first spotted by officers driving at an excessively slow speed north along Plenty Rd in Mill Park. He then turned onto Arthurs Creek Rd allegedly veering into oncoming traffic before almost collecting a cyclist. The man was pulled over by police and when searched, a firearm was found in the car. Knights, Yea, again drawing attention to the bad state of the road in Whatton Place. - Crs Purcell and O'Callaghan moved that tenders be called for the work, but Cr Drysdale, the other Central Riding councillor, opposed the motion on account of the state of the finances, contending that it was no use tinkering with the job, also that the road in question was a hard natural road, and although it might be in a bad state in wet weather, it was dry and hard again a couple of days afterwards. Cr. Purcell said that, in company with Cr. Lawrance, he had visited the place, and they found it in a disgraceful state. The road was made in Miller street up to Mr King's residence, and from there on to the main road it was not made.Cr O'Callaghan said that the whole job at most was about three chains, and would not run into much money. The engineer need not make it too expensive. Cr Lawrance could not understand why the whole of the road was not made under the one contract. If this had been done the council would have saved money. Cr Drysdale said he did not like a recommendation to go to the engineer to make a patched up job. Cr. Coonan : The Central Riding members are chasing the rainbow and missing the mud. An amendment was made that the matter be postponed for one month.The amendment was lost, and the motion that tenders be called was carried.

Changes at regional media firms ■ Changes are occurring in the media interests of the owners of The Yea Chronicle, the AlexandraEildon-Marysville Standard and the North Central Review. The Mott family of Whittlesea has significantly increased its holding in The North Central Review Pty Ltd, known until July 17, as Newspaper House Pty Ltd. The Yeates family of Bairnsdale, through its Manchester Images Pty Ltd, decreased its holding in the Kilmore-based weekly newspaper firm by 426,797 shares in June. Linear Pty Ltd, associated with the Mott family, simultaneously increased its holding by 125,110 shares. Another Yeates company, SE Investments Pty Ltd, transferred a parcel of 4 million shares to the Mott's Linear Pty Ltd on June 28, according to Australian Securities and Investments Commission records. Based on latest ASIC returns, it is believed that the 4½ million shares were listed at $1 each. Linear shareholders are Walter and Claire Mott, and their daughters Lisa Belokozovski, Celina Mott and Fiona Mott. Linear Pty Ltd is registered to a private address at Whittlesea. The North Central Review is a weekly newspaper claiming a circulation of 14,088, according to 201516 figures. The newspaper re-appears as the Whittlesea Review; and The Free Press in Romsey-Lancefield, with 2532 copies, according to 2014-15 figures currently published. Several pages are changed for each of the local editions. The North Central Review was started by Bruce Smith in 2004, in opposition to his father Jim Smith's Kilmore Free Press. His early partners included Trevor Vienet, Greg Hanson, journalist Renee McKeever and Knight Electronics. Murrindindi Shire Council places almost all of its local public notice advertising with newspapers published by the Mott family group interests: Alexandra Newspapers Pty Ltd and The North Central Review Pty Ltd. Murrindindi Council made the 'monopoly' purchasing decision more than 4½ years ago, in October 2012. The Shire has not called for competitively-priced tendering since. Alexandra Newspapers Pty Ltd publishes the Alexandra Standard and Yea Chronicle titles. That company has 12 shares: four held by Celina Mott; four by Fiona Mott; and another four jointly held by the sisters, non-beneficially. The 'Newspaper House' website includes links for the Kilmore, Whittlesea, Romsey, Yea and Alexandra publications. The Yeates and Mott families have been major partners in a number of publishing concerns including Kilmore, Yea and Alexandra. These joint interests have included the North Central Visitor Guide and the North Central Wedding Guide. The Motts purchased an interest, believed to be 49 per cent, some years ago in the East Gippsland media properties - James Yeates and Sons - which include the twiceweekly Bairnsdale Advertiser, Snowy River Mail at Orbost, Lakes Post at Lakes Entrance, and the East Gippsland News.

Bairnsdale partner sells 4 million shares in newspaper company

● Walter Mott Walter 'Wally' Mott, of Whittlesea, resigned his directorship of SE Investments Pty Ltd, on June 30. Robert 'Bob' Yeates continues as sole director of that company which was formerly known as James Yeates and Sons (Printing) Pty Ltd. Mr Mott and Mr Yeates each resigned their directorships of Alexandra Newspapers Pty Ltd on October 14 last year. They were replaced as directors by Celina Mott, now of Wallan; and Karen Morrison, of Cathkin. Mr Yeates's departure as an Alexandra Newspapers Pty Ltd director, and his family's sale of shares to the Motts, comes as The Local Paper significantly increases its market share. The Local Paper was created in 2016 by Local Media Pty Ltd, associated with the Long family, which also operates the statewide Melbourne Observer newspaper, which first began publication in 1969. The Melbourne Observer has been operated over those 48 years by owners including IPEC Transport magnate Gordon Barton, prominent media commentator Maxwell Newton, and war hero Peter Isaacson. Ash Long and family owned The Yea Chronicle from 1984-1993, and expanded their group at the time to include weekly titles at Seymour, Nagambie, Kilmore, Kinglake, Whittlesea and Yarra Glen. The Longs sold the Yea Chronicle business in 1993 to Jenny Smith and her brother Geoff Heyes, trading as Alexandra Newspapers Pty Ltd. The Seymour Chronicle and Nagambie Chronicle businesses became the Seymour-Nagambie Advertiser in 1993, and continued for another 20 years until the retirement of owner Keith Peplar. Little was done with the Kinglake Chronicle operations since 1993. The Smith and Heyes families sold the Yea and Alexandra titles to the Newspaper House group in 2011. The Bairnsdale-based 'Yeates' business publishes other titles the Lakes Coast Visitor Guide, Great Alpine Road Visitor Guide, NorthEast Angler and South East and West Fishing. The Yeates family also have Tasmanian media interests including the weekly Huon News and the Kingborough Chronicle. The North Central Review Pty Ltd board now comprises Walter Mott, production chief Greg Hanson of Kilmore, and manager Liz Cronin

of Doreen. Mr Mott, 72 this Friday, holds significant farming interests in the Whittlesea and Mitchell shires. He is Chairman of the Kilmore Community Bank and Wallan Community Bank. The Mott family have had an association with the Whittlesea Agricultural Society over decades. His father, the late Walter T. Mott, was instrumental in starting the Whittlesea Post newspaper in 1935. Walter Mott and his cousins sold their interest in the Leader Newspapers group in suburban Melbourne for approximately $150 million in 1986. Both the Mott and Yeates families have fifth generation members involved in their media businesses. In the early 1850s George Mott arrived in Australia and began work as a journalist with the Melbourne Argus. In 1854 he started publishing newspapers in the Victorian goldfields near Beechworth and Chiltern. These include the Ovens and Murray Advertiser, which continues in publication by the North East Media group based at Wangaratta, and chaired by Hartley Higgins. The Higgins family operate the Wangaratta Chronicle (three times weekly), the Mansfield Courier, the Alpine Observer at Bright, the Myrtleford Times, the Euroa Gazette, and Alpine News. The Higgins specialist stable of publications includes Mount Buller News, Mt Hotham Falls Creek News, Regional Extra, North East Tourist News, Southern Farmer and NorthEast Goulburn Murray Farmer. With the acquisition of The Herald and Weekly Times by News Corporation later that same year, the Leader Newspaper group became a part of News Limited Community Newspapers with a total of 95 publications throughout Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Tasmania. The Alexandra Standard had its beginnings with the Alexandra Times in 1868. The Yea Chronicle had its roots with the Yea Telegraph which started in 1885.

New ownership at north-east radio stations

● New owner Rowly Paterson with Dave Robertson ■ Rowly Paterson’s ACE Radio Network is taking over radio stations in Victoria’s north-east, and southern NSW, from November 1. ACE will become owners of 3NE and Edge FM at Wangaratta, and 2QN and Edge FM at Deniliquin, after acquiring the majority shareholding of Dave and Ann Robertson. Local newspaper owner Walter Mott and his daughter Lisa Belokozovski are currently listed as two of the four directors of North East Broadcasters Pty Ltd, which also operates a subsidiary, Rich Rivers Radio. The Melbourne Observer newspaper speculated in late 2015 that a sale of the four radio stations could attract a price tag between $12 million and $17 million. Robertson previously had radio interests at 4KG and West FM in Longreach, Queensland; and 2BH and Hill FM at Broken Hill, NSW. ACE Radio network operates 17 regional radio stations. Their radio stations are located at Traralgon, Warrnambool, Horsham, Swan Hill, Colac and Albury-Wodonga. Rowly Paterson married Judy Handbury, niece of Rupert Murdoch. The Handbury family have been prominent graziers in Victoria’s Western District. As well as their radio interests, they operate the Weekly Advertiser newspaper business at Horsham. Mr Paterson says that ACE will become the major shareholders of the radio stations from November 1. Dave Robertson, 69, will be General Manager of the Deniliquin interests. Owen Godenzi will be GM at Wangaratta. Lui Zacher will be Content Director. “I’m looking forward to being part of the ACE group and working with the Chairman Rowly Paterson, CEO Mark Taylor and the ACE station,” Mr Robertson said. The Mott family had earlier sold its shares, held by Linear Pty Ltd, in the radio business to companies associated with the Robertson family. Their interests include Radio Outback Pty Ltd, and Robrad Pty Ltd. In 2014, the Australian Communications and Media Authority determined that Rich Rivers Radio Pty Ltd breached several licence conditions after the Mott’s Linear Pty Ltd sold its shares to the Robertson’s Robrad Pty Ltd. “The share transfer was between shareholders that were existing shareholders in North East Broadcasters Pty Ltd with no new shareholders coming into existence. Accordingly we continued to conuct business in the same manner as it had been for many years and were not alerted to notify change in control,” Rich Rivers Radio told the ACMA.

YEA FOOTBALL REPORT SENIORS Yea 7.6 (48) defeated by Alexandra 16.13 (109) It was a familiar tale on Saturday for Yea, who kept within striking distance for most of the match but fading late in a 61-point loss to Alexandra. The Tigers were up for the fight early in torrid conditions, running hard both ways to trail by just seven points at the first break. Despite the Rebels stretching the lead to 18 points with a three-goal-to-one second term, Yea actually controlled much of the play but failed to make the most of their opportunities. It was a similar story after the main change, with the home side winning plenty of the footy but butchering the ball going forward, relying on a disciplined back half to keep them in the game. With Shaun Pearce, James Ryan and Cam Ryan all sustaining game-ending injuries, the Tigers were without a bench in the final quarter and the result was predictable, with Alexandra slamming on six late goals to close out the match. Dan O'Dwyer had a great duel with dangerous Rebels forward Brayden Norris, Harrison Jarvie was tireless in the middle of the ground and Aidan McSpeerin found plenty of space on the wing. The back half was well served by Eddie Neilson, Trav Kirkham and Andrew Chisholm, while David Webb was prominent up forward and Pearce slotted two majors before he hurt his calf. The young Yea side simply ran out of legs but could have been much closer heading into the last quarter had their ball use been better, particularly forward of centre. Yea 0.2 (2) defeated by Alexandra 7.10 (52) A strong Alexandra outfit were always going to tough to stop and this proved to be the case with Yea going down by 50 points. Scoring was difficult in the heavy conditions and the Tigers failed to register a point in the first half, while the Rebels forced the ball forward constantly to open up a 33-point buffer. While it wasn't particularly pretty, the second half showed a greater effort from the hosts, restricting Alexandra to just two goals and getting on the scoreboard with a pair of behinds. Lachie White continued his late charge for the best and fairest with another outstanding performance in defence, while Ryan Akers took intercept mark after intercept mark deep in the back half. Jaryed Garlick racked up possessions up and down the ground, Darcy Pell controlled the ruck and Jack Sundblom dominated across half back. The Rebels will feature in finals football this season and there was a clear gulf in class between the two sides but the Tigers continued to battle hard until the final siren. YEA NETBALL REPORT D-GRADE

■ D-Grade did not show the form they are capable of with a disappointing loss to Alexandra on Saturday. Alexandra made a great start to the game, moving the ball down the court with more ease than the Tigers. This put pressure on Leisa and Sarah, who tried their upmost to pick off the quick incoming feeds. Yea steadied and were able to get four goals on the board to trail by only goals at ¼ time. Molly came into the game at GS and within the first minute made a solid front position to receive a pass and then turned to shoot truly. Yea then had their chances but minor errors gave Alex opportunities that they capitalised on. Tessa and Harriet worked super hard in the midcourt this quarter. Alex 11-5 at half time. Kate, Jill and Sarah formed a formidable back trio in the third quarter and Alex really had to work hard for every goal they got. Yea had the same trouble in their attacking end though against tough defenders and went into the last break down by nine goals. Yea wasable to find some good passages of play during the last quarter, Ebony playing a great quarter at WA. But the game belonged to the Rebels who ran out easy winners by 10 goals. C-GRADE

The C-Grade girls were eager to get out on the court on Saturday, after having the last two weeks off. The girls made sure they pushed themselves on the Thursday night prior to the match as they all knew Alex would come out firing. With missing midcourter Judy, all eight girls knew it would take some hard work to overcome Alex. Right from defensive to attacking all seven players on court showed some determination and most of all showed what they are capable of. Deb in GK had a tough gig on a strong and tall goal shooter but she used her footwork to her advantage and picked and tipped some balls that were thrown in by Alex's midcourt. Ruby started off in GD and worked well with Deb. Ruby took some flying intercepts all game, working well with Mum Kim in WD. Kim had some beautiful hands over and intimidated Alex's midcourts well. Jordan and Molly starred in the midcourt in the first half. Driving hard and working well with both Fiona and Jess in the ring. Emily was having one of her best games this season so far. Taking some spectacular intercepts on the centre passes and on the goal circle. She created some space for Deb and Kim in the second half and really directed some play through the midcourt. The third quarter saw Ruby move out into the Centre position. She worked well with Molly, feeding well to both Jess and Fi. Fi was the play maker all game, really reading off Jess who was working overtime to get the ball into the shooting circle. They both shot beautifully all game, as they always do, really sharing the load. The last quarter the Tigers kept pushing the lead out, trying to consolidate the lead the best that they could. Looking back to the start of the season, everyone has improved, not just as an individual but as a team. Everyone has come a long way and we hope to keep pushing ourselves in the weeks to come. ter for the day, shooting 15 goals. Sarah moved into Centre, with Sophie Watts moving into WA. They worked well together, trying to create some space to drive onto the ball that was coming out of defence. Sophie Stares started off well in WD, having some beautiful hands over, that created some loopy passes that both Brooke and Bridget could pick off. Going into the Third, there was some positional changes all over the court. This meant the Tigers had to not just adjust to their opponents but adjust to their teammates and who they were working with. Chelsea had a quarter in GS, working nicely with Nikki who remained in GA. Megan came back on into WA, really stepping up and giving 100 per cent. Sophie Watts played in Centre, working alongside Megan, sister Nikki and Chelsea in attacking. Defensively, Brooke remained in GK applying some amazing one on one pressure. Bridget and Soph also remained in their position as Alex were finding it exceptionally hard to score in the second. Going into the last, the Tigers stepped it up and kept chipping away at the score board. They took control and kept possession for the remainder of the game. This quarter saw a huge position change in the goal circle with superstar Brooke moving from GK to GS. This change saw some smiles all over the court. This meant that Soph Stares would fill the GK position and work with Megan in GD. Chelsea moved back into the Centre position, working incredibly well with Soph Watts in the WA position. Sarah moved back into WD where she had one of her best quarters so far this season. Everyone played a sensational game of netball. Well done girls. Yea 53 def Alexandra 37 Goals: N. Watts 28, M. B-Grade had a day they'd rather forget, suffering a crushing loss to Alexandra, but all credit to the visiting team who outplayed the Tiger team from the first whistle. Cindy H and Reg had a day they'd rather forget under the goal ring and whilst Alex piled on four or five early goals, our girls couldn't find the goal ring. Yea eventually worked their way into the game, mostly due to the efforts of Rhi, Rach and Reggie in defence who picked off what they could of the constant ball in the Alexandra goal third. The Tigers were down by four at the first break. Yea wasdetermined to get themselves back in the game but the Rebels were focussed and forced Yea into continual errors. Kate and Cindy N moved the ball around the attacking third waiting for the best feed into the ring, but they were few and far between as the Alex defenders limited Cindy and Reg's movement to the ball. Yea went into the half time break 10 goals astray. Despite making numerous changes to the line up, Alex were able to adjust to them quickly and again outplayed the Tigers in the third quarter. Reggie Bell was doing her best in the WD bib to dictate where the Alex WA received the ball, and when attacking she provided many options up the court. But it was all Alex which extended their lead out to a match winning 16 goals. Rhi made the move from GK to GS in the last and provided a strong target for Yea, going on to shoot eightg goals for the quarter. Loz moved into GK and despite being outsized was able to make many intercepts and force errors and Hannah played her best netball in the last quarter. Despite being better late than never, Yea's final five minutes of the game was certainly their best as they moved the ball with precision down the court via strong leads and better decision making. As always, the team was positive and focussed on looking forward and not back. Reggie Bell was the stand out for the day and deservedly earned the team award. Well done Reggie. Yea had to win this game to keep third position on the ladder. After winning last weekend against Thornton Eildon, the Tigers had a positive outlook on the game on Saturday. All nine players had an awesome warm up to start the day, getting vocal and mentally prepared for a hard game ahead. The girls know that Alex never give up, which meant they needed to take control of every opportunity they had. Meg and Nikki found their groove early, working well with each other and bringing midcourters Megan and Chelsea into the game well. Chelsea had one of her best games so far this season, really implementing the hard work she's achieved this season. Megan also had one of her best games this season, driving strong and feeding well to both Meg and Nikki. Defensively, Brooke was very vocal, getting around her teammates and most of all giving everything she had. Bridget was yet again amazing. Taking some flying intercepts and rebounds. Sarah put some heavy one on one pressure, trying to take out the Alex WA out of the game. The second quarter was the Tigers’ best quar-

■ The AFL Yarra Ranges League Round 16 last Saturday saw the Rebels travel to Yea for two games of football and four games of netball, the ground showing the effects of Friday night rain with a few muddy patches and surface water. RESERVES The Reserves, with three changes to the team, were first to disturb the many muddy patches on the Yea Recreation Reserve but the home side looked up to the task as they took the game up to the Rebels early but could not penetrate the Alex defence but the Yea defence was also on top in the conditions and only Jedd Hamill was able to find the goals. Asked for a big effort at the first break, Tom Halligan responded and covered the ground well as did Ben Podger-Carroll who won many possessions. Scott Isaacs kicked four of the last five Alex goals whilst Corey Jack led the defense which has only allowed the opposition five scoring shots in the last three games. The last half was a battle of the strongest in conditions that suited Daniel Roper and Brent McDonald as only two goals were kicked in forty minutes of football, Alexandra going on to win 7.10 (52) to Yea 0.2 (2) but as for the seniors, the "the going gets tough" next week. YEA JUNIOR FOOTBALL REPORTS

The Seniors made three changes to the team with Nathan Dundas, Luke Heard and Nick Waugh coming in to replace Michael Coombs, Jasper Rouget and Jake Steyger, the Rebels having enjoyed a good record against our old Waranga rivals since Yea returned to the Yarra Valley in 2008, winning 16 of the 22 games. Historically Alexandra has always played well at Yea and this continues as nine of the 16 wins have come the other side of Cottons Pinch. Zach Heaslip was instrumental in getting the ball to Jack Elkington for one of his infrequent goals and Yea, stung from last week's defeat at Thornton, was very competitive early and had Scott Heveren and the Goonan twins working hard in defence but a free to Yea enabled the Tigers first goal. Yea was often first to the ball and winning the free kicks but Luke Heard using one of his own, kicked Alexandra's second goal. Scott Hill and Heaslip got the ball to Ryley Norris close in and he goaled but Yea kept coming and scored the next major as Alex missed targets by hand and foot. Heveren was strong in defense and his dash gained many meters and Ryley Norris, in great form of late, was winning many possessions as Alex went to the first break with a seven point lead on the scoreboard. Yea attacked first in the second quarter but it was the visitors who got the first goal as Brayden Norris who receives plenty of attention, converted from a free. Matt Steiner winning the ball well, forwarded and Scott Hill kicked Alexandra's fifth goal and had the chance minutes later to repeat but was astray. Yea goaled at the nine minute mark to keep in touch as the Alex ruckmen and midfielders had now worked out how to combat Yea's man mountain at the centre ball-ups and were able to win most centre clearances but despite a good running goal to Callum Tranter, the remainder of the second quarter was between the respective half back lines. Whilst Alex was virtually double Yea's score at the long break the Tigers were still in a low scoring contest, trailing by 17 points. Alex began the third quarter with behinds before Heard, the last link in a chain of possessions to Brayden Norris, Hill and Chris Mullins, kicked accurately. Ben Woollard playing well, found Steiner who had trouble kicking over the big ruckman (should have ran around him) and was offline. Yea was still able to move the ball well and goaled from a free and 50m penalty to keep up hopes but Heaslip soon restored the margin with a good goal half way through the quarter. Alex added further behinds before Heaslip found Brayden Norris for his second goal. Yea kicked its second goal for the quarter but Norris quickly added a third goal as Alex won the next centre clearance, giving the Rebels a five-goalplus lead at the last change. Hill and Heard were both involved getting the ball to Steiner for the first last term goal as Nathan Dundas was good in the centre as players worked hard to extract the ball from the packs of muddy players. An erratic Yea kick across goal enabled Heveren to mark and goal as Alex now had victory in sight, Alex again won the ball from the centre and Steiner found Brayden Norris for another goal. Jordan Purcell who does most things right, started a move that saw Alex move the ball the length of the ground but a behind was a poor result. A Yea turnover enabled Norris to kick his fifth goal as Alex was now well on top. Steiner and Ben Cooper who reveled in the conditions added further goals to finish 16.13 (109) to 7.6 (48) and consolidate Alexandra's position in fifth place. The atmosphere in the rooms after the game was great but Alex must now prepare for much tougher opposition in the remaining games lead-

ing up to Finals. CLUB PEOPLE Earlier this year we featured some of our former local players including Hailey Elkington who is playing AFL London women's football for Wandsworth Demons in London, England. After playing in the reserves team during the season, Hailey gained selection in the senior team which played the South East London Giants in the Grand Final at Clapham Commons in London last weekend, the Demons winning 5.4 - 34 to 0.1 - 1. Hailey played full back and had a short stint in the ruck before celebrations commenced at the final siren. Half the team is Australian with the balance made up of local and other international players. The Wandsworth Demons reserves team also made it to the Grand Final but was not successful.

YEA JUNIOR FOOTBALL REPORTS UNDER 16

■ It was a perfect winters day for footy in Yea on Sunday, a cold wind, icy rain and a muddy ground. The Tigers needed to get back on the winners list against a depleted Wandong outfit,but it was half-way through the first quarter before the first goal was scored, to Yea with a nice kick by Bulbeck followed by one to Beattie. In the heavy going every goal became important as the Tigers knew too well the ability of Wandong to push the Yea boys to the finish. Quarter-time: Yea 2.1.13 to Wandong 0.1.1 The second quarter,as expected was areal battle with the ball becoming harder to handle and accurate kicking almost impossible. After a couple of near misses by Charles, he slotted Yea's only goal for the quarter.Muddy conditions were making it hard to tell the players apart asYea took a 14-point lead at half time.Yea3.3.21 to Wandong 1.1.7 Yea,although leading needed to lift in the second half to shut Wandong out of the game,the Tigers began to talk better in the third as the teamwork improved. Wilsmore was winning in the ruck,Gilbee and Turvey turned defence into attack ,the Harry brothers were in everything as was Beattie,who added another goal,then passed of to Ethan Aldous for his first. ■ Yea hosted Wandong in the last game of the season with more outs than ins on a ground that was looking stressed. Keldo, Jardine and Haydos set the tone for the day as Yea started strong with a two goal first quarter. Then Jardine Nai lit it up with a blind turn one way then the other before doing the dose do and nailing a 35m pass into the pocket. Moments later another blind turn and a goal from the same pocket had you thinking he was wearing dancing shoes where gumboots might have been in order. Yea 3.5.23 at half time. Not to be outdone Sam Gregory worked the pocket at the other end in the third with a give and get finishing by slicing the sticks with a checkside and who’d of thought we’d see the best of Perry Moon churning up the quagmire that was. An enjoyable way to finish the home and away for all except those doing the washing. Good Luck to our Tigers in the finals and thank you for a great season regardless from here. ■ What a way to finish off the season for our U10s against Wandong at home. It was classic winter sport conditions wet, cold and muddy and the kids loved it. As the little Tigers have done nearly every game they showed great sportsmanship by happily rotating through for the Warriors as they had fewer numbers. The higher skill set of the Tigers was evident in both games and there were a couple of very excited players (and proud parents) who were able to score their first goals for the season. The season has been too short for coaches Bek Klinge and Rob Armstrong who have given generously of their time and support for the all the kids. They are looking forward to season 2018 and wish all the current U10s the best of luck who are taking the next step into U12s next year. A huge thank you to the wonderful 'U10's Tiger Fam' (parents, family and supporters of our U10s) by you willingly volunteering to umpire, timekeep, cut oranges, work in the cafe, take photos and cheering on the Tigers each week you have contributed to making this a memorable season.
