● Millicent Charles, Poppy Stewart and Matilda Archibald. Photos: Suzanne Brown ■ Term 4 started in earnest last week at Sacred Heart Primary Schoolin Yea. There were fragrant wafts from the kitchen as the Year 5/6 students baked silverbeet and ricotta pie and orange and cardamom cakes. This was under the expert guidance of Zanni Waldstein as part of the school's Kitchen Garden Program. However, the words on the lips of the younger children were 'Walk like an Egyptian'. During the last week of Term 3, Year 6 student MC's, Liam Williams and Montanna Dunne, led the school community in showcasing the students' visual and performing arts talents at the school's annual Music and Arts Soiree. Year 5 student Perry Moon kicked off the evening with the dancing of an Irish Reel with rousing applause. Prep students Ashton and Hannah then explained how their class created 'Where's Wally' puppets starting with a polystyrene ball and a skewer. The junior students then danced their way through the 1980's Bangles version of Walk like an Egyptian dressed in black and gold costumes and showing their best moves. Year 4 student Poppy Stewart and Annie and Harry Dignam, Year 4 and 2 respectively, each played solos on the keyboard. Year 6 student Fletcher Archibald played a Spanish guitar duet with his teacher Julie. Always a highlight is the stringed instruments. The cello students played Voyagers, and the Year 3 students played the Bell Song on violin, which they commenced learning earlier this year as part of the school's Year 3 String Program. The senior students performed some 1970's rock with the Year 4 students playing It's a Long Way to the Top and We Will Rock You, and the Year 5/6 students playing Star Wars. Throughout the evening, Year 2 students Lila McKay and Marley Leatham told about their oil and chalk pastel drawings of Van Gogh's Starry Night, Year 4 students Matilda Underhill and Freya Foster shared what they had learned when their class made Indonesian batik wall hangings, and Year 5 student Cooper Holdsworth-Rose, talked about the techniques he used to create his mixed media Ned Kelly artwork based on the work of Australian artist Sidney Nolan. Not to be forgotten was the mesmerising Year 4-6 African percussion drumming, and the drumming duet by Year 3 student Charlotte Young and Year 2 student Elise Miller. Year 6 student Brooke Leary capped off a polished evening by accompanying herself on the guitar singing Christina Perri's A Thousand Years. Students thanked Graham Veal and Helen Leary for encouraging them to persevere with learning to play their instruments and Mrs Brown for teaching them about art and for making art so much fun. Acting Principal Denise Hall commented on how proud she was of all the students' accomplishments and how the arts are an important and valued part of their school curriculum. - Suzanne Brown

Warning on firewood ■ Murrindindi Shire Council's Natural Environment and Climate Change Portfolio Councillor, Rebecca Bowles is urging the community to act responsibly when it comes to firewood collection. "There have been reports recently of illegal firewood collection in the Shire,” Cr Bowles said. “We would like to remind residents that firewood collection is not permitted in National Parks, natural catchment areas, conservation reserves or on roadsides managed by VicRoads. "There are heavy penalties for people found cutting down trees in unauthorised areas or within Council-managed roadsides without a permit. Council's Local Laws officers patrol known areas of firewood collection to ensure permit conditions are being adhered to", said Cr Bowles. "The best option for firewood collection is to go to a designated collection area, during the designated collection season. Collection areas are open during autumn and spring, usually from March 1 to June 30 and September 1 to November 30.

Labor MLA Vicki Ward announced that the State Labor Government has awarded $3.37 million to Eltham High School to redevelop the oval, redo the tennis courts to include netball (the first netball courts in Eltham for decades) as well as a building for change-rooms and a kiosk. “This builds on the $1.5m announced in this year’s State Budget,” Ms Ward said. “This fantastic news will not only enhance girls participation in football and netball, with the participation of Eltham Junior Football Club and Panthers Junior Netball Club, but also Eltham Tennis Club, Research Junior Football Club, Eltham East Primary School and Eltham Primary School. “It will include so much of our local community. This has been a fantastic community collaboration – thank you to everyone involved in this project,” Ms Ward said. ■ The nmext Victorian State Election is scheduled to be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018.
Boomerang bag time
■ Boomerang bags have become incredibly popular in places including Alexandra, Yea and Kinglake. The banning of plastic bags, packaging and microbeading is due to be discussed in State Parliament today (Wed.). Plastic-free Victoria Alliance, a newly formed and rapidly growing collective of over 50 environmental, community and industry groups across Victoria, is calling on the State Parliament to put party politics aside and take immediate action to turn the tide on plastic pollution. “There are hundreds of community groups across Victoria who are fed up with inaction by Governments on issues directly impacting where they live," said PVA spokesman Robert Skehan. Jewellery thieves roam around Murrindindi
■ Police in Murrindindi are seeking community assistance regarding a spate of daylight burglaries in their district, particularly around the Kinglake area. During September numerous residences were broken into, with the main items of choice for the thieves being jewellery. The houses have been entered during the day, with investigators believing the offenders are going straight to the bedrooms and rifling through drawers and cupboards, specifically looking for jewellery. In one incident in Watsons Rd, Kinglake, the resident was only away from the house for less than an hour on the morning of Friday, September 8, and returned to find the front door forced open and the jewellery gone. Other houses targeted have been in Grandview Cres., The Ridge, Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd and the Whittlesea-Yea Rd, along with Sutherland Rd in Kinglake Central. Murrindindi Sen. Sgt Mark Hesse is encouraging residents to review security of their houses, and in particular where they store their jewellery. “Consider locking away valuable jewellery in a locked container, out of sight and away from the usual storage places of in your bedroom
drawers. “Give thought to installing a small keypad safe, attached to the inside of a cupboard, so it cannot be carted away. “These safes are also good for protecting and storing personal papers, such as passports and other important identity documents”, said Sen. Sgt Hesse. “Taking photographs of jewellery is always a good idea, as it is very hard to describe an item once you don’t have it anymore. Small items such as jewellery will come into our possession, but it is very hard to find the owners as we are not given adequate descriptions of the property at the time it
as lost or stolen; this makes it much more difficult to find out where it first originated from”. Investigators are also encouraging residents to report suspicious behaviour. “These unwanted visitors will wander around, knocking on doors, looking in windows, trying to find an empty house that they can try to get into, usually by forcing the front or back door. “If you see anything which arouses your curiosity as it seems unusual or out of place, let the police know. “Suspicious behaviour can include such things as a person or people walking around aimlessly, trying to keep their faces covered up, cars parked in unusual or out of the way spots, people knocking on doors or peering in windows,” said Sen. Sgt. Hesse. “Take note of what they look like, and grab registration numbers of any vehicles”, he said. Suspicious behaviour should be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or for immediate police response call Triple Zero (000). Residents can also find out more about home security by going to www.police.vic.gov.au, where there are fact sheets and check lists for increasing your home security.
Whittlesea keeps pressure on State Government
■ Shadow Police Minister Police Edward O’Donohue, together with Northern Victoria MLC Wendy Lovell, have called on the Andrews Labor Government to ensure the Whittlesea community has a fully resourced and operational Whittlesea Police Station. The calls came when Mr O’Donohue and Ms Lovell met members of the local Save Our Staff action group in Whittlesea on Friday. The Save Our Staff group organised a public meeting last month to express concerns about the lack of police numbers in the township in the face of a new police station opening soon in Mernda. Four vacancies had been removed from the Whittlesea station in order to help staff the Mernda Police complex, Ms Lovell said. A petition calling for the reinstatement of the vacancies has been signed by more than 700 members of the Whittlesea community and will soon be tabled in Parliament by Ms Lovell. “Under Daniel Andrews, crime is
MP: Power to the people
● Cathy McGowan ■ Local communities such as the Murrindindi Climate Network are a good example of people with local solutions to tackle rising energy costs and security, says Indi Federal MHR Cathy McGowan. Ms McGowan introduced the Renewable Energy Legislation Amendment (Supporting Renewable Communities) Bill 2017 to Federal Parliament. She said local communities across Indi were “ready to go” “There are 90 community energy projects across Australia – 75 per cent of them are in regional Australia,” Ms McGowan said. “As an independent representative I’m asking the government to hear the community’s message that local power generation is a vital piece of a dynamic national approach, together with baseload projects and other initiatives,” Ms McGowan said. She said that communities in North East Victoria were ready to play a role in developing local energy solutions. Examples include Totally Renewable Yackandandah, Winton Wetlands, Wangaratta Sustainability Network, Renewable Albury Wodonga, Benalla Sustainable Future Group, Murrindindi Climate Network, Up2Us Landcare Mansfield and Indigo Council. “Communities are working in partnership with local and state governments to address supply and demand. “They are developing renewable energy installation and storage, energy and efficiency and community education,” Ms McGowan said. “The piece that is missing is the Commonwealth. The Government knows that the agency best placed to support the community energy sector is ARENA.”

■ Murrindindi Shire Council is set to ask questions as it takes over the running of the Kinglake Memorial Reserve. The local committee has handed back the running of the oval to the Council. Reconciliations of any monies owed, if any, to the Reserve by local organisations are expected to take place.

The Yea Story: Part 21
Board member applies for 54 acres of Town Common From The Story of Yea by Harvey Blanks ■ While the battle of the King Parrot Creek bridge was being waged however, other important matters were occupying the attention of the Board. James Daniel Webster, with an eye to the future, induced his fellow Board members to write to Dr Muller, famed architect of Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens, asking for up to 100 ornamental trees for planting in Yea’s High Street and along the approached to the cemetery. Regrettably, Dr Muller was unable to comply with request. The calamitous floods of 1870 had done grave damage to roads throughout the district, and some of the privately-constructed bridges and fords on roads which were now the Board’s responsibility had been washed away, and requests poured in for repairs and replacements. Faced with expenditure far beyond its capacity, the Board once again sent a series of deputations to the government, pointing out that even the bridge across the Muddy Creek at Yea itself had had its approaches destroyed, and wagonloads of rocks had had to be poured in to make the road temporarily passable. But little aid was forthcoming, flooding having been general throughout much of the State that year. Mr George S. Grant, the next Board Chairman, found himself unable to get his stock to market, and the Board gave him special permission to use the passenger ferry at Ghin Ghin for three days to transfer his cattle across the swollen Goulburn River at 1s per trip; provided he returned the ferry “in the same condition as when received”. The ferry was undamaged, but the approaches were so thoroughly ploughed up by the cattle that the crossing was closed to the public for several weeks. At Molesworth, John Sloan and his ferry were reaping a small fortune from travellers wishing to proceed to Alexandra, Mansfield and points east; so in August 1872, the Board decided to buy him out. Sloan was asked to set a price for his punt, but realising that the growing volume of traffic necessitated a bridge, the Board approached Alexandra Shire Council at the same time asking them if they would be willing to share the cost of such a major project. John Sloan agreed to sell his punt to the Board for £500 - a very great sum in those days - and because of lack of funds his offer was stood over until the Board’s estimates for 187273. When these estimates appeared they also included the sum of £1000 for the building of a bridge at Molesworth, as Yea’s share of the total cost. Although Alexandra was as keen as Yea to see the bridge built, it wasw not legally able to contribute to the cost as the site lay well within the boundaries of a different district. Yea solved this however, by asking Alexandra to annexe part of Yea’s territory between the north side of the Goulburn and the main Yea/ Alexandra road. The matter was really one of exchange of territories, for at the same time Yea organised a petition among

were not the genuine signatures of the ratepayers concerned. A Council minute of the day declares: “In the interests of the ratepayers, it is our solemn duty to cause a searcing inquiry to be made into the matter, and we order that proceedings be forthwith taken in the Police Court against the persons making the false declarations”. Dirty work was also discovered in another petition organised by the Council’s old enemy, the Broadford Road Board, which asked the government to annex to Broadford part of Yea’s district along the common boundary. Yea saw this as retaliation for the territory Broadford had lost in the Battle of King Parrot Creek Bridge, and fired off a letter to the minister pointing out that some of the names in the petition were not those of any ratepayers resident in the district. But such minor irritations could not deflect the Council from its determination to build the Molesworth Bridge, although it was by no means clear where the money was to come from. The contractor who had built the King Parrot Bridge, Mr C.G. Miller, tendered successfully for the new project and the Council agreed to pay him £500 by November 1874, a further £1000 one year later, and the outstanding balance, with interest at 10 per cent, in November 1875, by which time “the amount we expect to receive from the government will be available to pay over to the contractor”. A deputation was then rushed off to Melbourne to inform the government that a firm commitment had been entered into, and that therefore a generous subsidy must be paid. The constyruction of the bridge duly got under way, but not without further internal troubles in the Council. The Works Committee recommended the appointment of a Mr James Maxwell at £4 a week “for at least six weeks” to superintend the bridge’s erection and to make sure that the contractor sank the piles as deeply as the plans required. As there were several other tenders at a lower figure for the post of supervisor, the recommendations upset the president, Cr George S.M. Grant, and when the Council overrode him by approving of Mr Maxwell’s application be declared the meeting closed and left the chair in a huff. The meeting promptly re-opened itself with Cr J.D. Webster in the chair, and confirmed Mr Maxwell’s appointment. This action so aggrieved the president that he absented himself from the next four consecutive meetings, and did not return until Mr Maxwell’s period of duty had been completed. By May 1874, the Council was making plans for the grand opening of the bridge. Deciding the kill several birds with one stone, Yea asked Alexandra Shire Council to join with it inviting the Minister for Railways, and any other members of Parliament thought likely to attend, for a grand public banquet to mark completion of the bridge. ● Continued on Page 37

■ Rotary Club of Alexandra’s President David Dimech had great pleasure in presenting a cheque to Rotary District 9790 District Governor Bernie Bott with a cheque for $500 at last Wednesday’s nights meeting. The money is to go to Rotary District 9790 2017-2018 partners program to fund research 50 per cent into Alzheimer’s disease and 50 per cent into dementia. District Governor Bernie explained that these insidious conditions although usually associated with old age can set in at any time. It is because of his personal experience of the pain and suffering these conditions can cause that he and his partner chose this fund raising project. Current research has made serious inroads to the early detection and therefore more effective management/treatment, it would be good to say cure but regrettably this seems a long way off. President David endorsed Bernie’s remarks and expressed the wish that all District 9790 Rotary Clubs also get behind his partners project to ensure that there will be significant funds to hand over to these research projects in 2018. - Robert Chaffe

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs FILM: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND - 40th Anniversary Edition: Genre: Science Fiction/Adventure. Cast: Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon, Francois Truffaut, Bob Balaban. Year: 1977. Rating: PG. Length: Three Versions - Three Assorted Running Times. Stars: ***** Summary: Epic blockbuster of a power repairman who has an extraordinary encounter with a strange spacecraft while out on a call followed by an increasing obsession, during which he finds an ally in a single mother with the same visions and who believes her son has been abducted by the aliens. Meanwhile an international group of scientists are planning a break-through in human-alien communication, and their collective quest culminates in a rendezvous and close encounter with Alien life. Hot on the heels of the phenomenal global success of "Jaws," Steven Spielberg hit another spectacular home run with this dazzling science fiction adventure of underlying racial communication and peace (also through music) by never losing sight of the gravity world it is set in. Richard Dreyfuss shines as the confused and befuddled father determined to solve the mystery of his unexplained obsession that he is desperate to understand ... matched equally by Teri Garr as his confused wife, Melinda Dillon as the single mother, the great Francois Truffaut as the French government scientist in charge, and Bob Balaban as the interpreter. Writer/Director Spielberg fully displays the genius of a conductor in the handling of his story with depths that surpass understanding, all executed through a cast of players who all excel right at the top their game, as do all the unseen wizards behind the camera. Superlative on every level, and thrilling every step of the way, the eye popping visual effects by Douglas Trumball (2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running, Blade Runner), breathtaking and uniquely powerful music score by legendary Oscar winning composer John Williams, and standout Oscar winning Cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond, all come together to create an emotionally charged multilayered, richly textured and influential masterpiece of man and the mysteries of the universe. Featuring THREE alternate versions of the film and a host of special features, this often imitated but never bettered classic never fails to grip with awe and wonder, and the more-and-more you experience its physical manifestation and emotional power, the moreand-more you are stirred by its mystery. Footnote: "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" considered the unofficial sequel, and watch out for "Star Wars" robot R2-D2 on the side of the [breathtaking] Alien Mothership as it arrives. FILM: SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING: Genre: Action/Sci-Fi/Adventure. Cast: Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey, Jr. Marisa Tomei. Details: 2017. Rating: M. Length: 133 Minutes. Stars: ***½ Verdict: Spider-Man/Peter Parker, with the help of his mentor, billionaire Tony Stark, tries to balance his life as an ordinary high school student in New York and a crush on a girl, while fighting crime as his superhero alter ego Spider-Man as a new villain and threat emerges. Following the events of "Captain America: Civil War," this delightfully engaging Marvel super-hero adventure is as close to a big screen comic-book realization as it gets. Sweet, witty and fast moving, the stakes, thrills and humour are high on the scale, but stays surprisingly grounded, clearly owing a debt, or paying homage to the John Hughes universe with nods to teen angst classics as "The Breakfast Club," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Home Alone," more so than "The Avengers" universe. Featuring a hugely likable cast, Tom Holland is immediately engaging with the complexity of teen dynamics as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, but the real stand-out here is veteran Oscar nominee Michael Keaton who is simply mesmerizing as the chief villain, Vulture. As expected, along with top of the range CGI effects, action and pyrotechnics, co-writer and director Jon Watts has delivered a smart, funny, heart-felt, fast moving, thrilling and entertaining roller-coaster ride from beginning to end. Great fun! FILM: IT COMES AT NIGHT: Genre: Mystery/Horror. Cast: Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo. Details: 2017. Rating: MA15+ Length: 91 Minutes. Stars: ***½ Verdict: Solid psychological-mystery-horror of a family secured within their desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world outside, and the strict domestic order the father has established with his wife and son is tested with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge, and despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust take over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, as he will protect his family at any cost. - James Sherlock

■ There were two major dancing teams in Hollywood films - Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and then Marge and Gower Champion. Marge and Gower appeared in MGM musical films during the 1950s. Marge was born, Marjorie Celeste Belcher, in Los Angeles, California, in 1919. She began dancing and teaching at an early age. In 1935 Marge was hired by the Walt Disney Studios to be a live action model for Snow White in the animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In later years Marge also became a model for The Blue Fairy in Pinocchio and the Dancing Hippo in Fantasia. In 1937 Marge married Art Babbitt from the Disney Studios but the marriage only lasted for three years. Gower Champion was born in 1919 and worked as a dancer on Broadway prior to World War II in which he served as a member of the US Coast Guard. After the war he resumed his career and met Marge, who became his dancing partner. They married in 1947 and became popular through their marvelous performances in the MGM remake of Showboat in 1951. Their song, Life upon the Wicked Stage, was a standout in the film. This led to other roles as a singing dance team in films such as Mr Music, Jupiter's Darling and Three for the Show.
Whatever Happened To ... Marge Champion By Kevin Trask of 3AW and 96.5 Inner FM They played the lead roles in Give a Girl a Break and co-starred with Debbie Reynolds. MGM had plans to use Marge and Gower in remakes of the old Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers RKO films. This only happened once when Roberta was remade under the title of Lovely to Look At. They starred in their own television series The Marge and Gower Champion Show in 1957. They had two children together but sadly, their son Blake was killed in a car crash at the age of 25. Gower became a very successful Broadway director and won eight Tony Awards in his career. Marge had good character roles in films such

as The Swimmer with Burt Lancaster, and The Party with Peter Sellers. Marge continued to work on Broadway after her marriage to Gower ended in 1973. Four years later she married the director Boris Segal. In 2001 Marge starred in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's Follies and sang four songs in the production at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway. Sadly, Gower Champion passed away on the opening night of a stage production on Broadway in 1980. Gower had choreographed 42nd Street and after numerous curtain calls the producer David Merrick announced to the cast and audience the sad news that Gower had died that afternoon. Marge Champion was a member of the nominating committee for the Tony Awards on Broadway from 1991-98 judging all the shows. These days Marge Champion is 98 and lives in New York. Will we ever see this type of singing and dancing team in films in the future? Who knows - my guess is probably not. Kevin Trask can be heard on 3AW: • Mike Till Midnight - Saturday at 8.10pm • The Time Tunnel - on Remember When - Sundays at 9.10pm And on 96.5 FM • That's Entertainment - Sundays at 12 Noon. 96.5FM is streaming on the internet. www.innerfm.org.au
Look to Bonneval in Caulfield Cup this Saturday ■ The Caulfield Cup to be run at Caulfield this Saturday , sees the top New Zealand mare, Bonneval, going to the top of the markets, after her captivating win in the Group One Underwood Stakes at Caulfield. At the time of going to press she was competing in the Caulfield Stakes, let's hope she gets through OK. She has only had the 10 starts for seven wins and a third, accumulating over a million dollars in stakemoney. Her wins include the New Zealand Oaks and the Australasian Oaks at Randwick, winning in great fashion, scoring by 4½- lengths. Having her first start since April, she rattled home to win the Underwood by a length with a whirlwind finish. Her trainer, Murray Baker, from the ‘Shaky Isles’, knows what winning the Caulfield Cup is all about winning two years ago with his top galloper, Mongolian Khan. Bonneval is certainly the one to beat as was Jameka the mare, who won the Caulfield Cup last year. Bonneval has won five of her races on soft tracks, with four minor placings, while she hasn't raced on a heavy. If she can draw a good gate, she will be the one to beat come Caulfield Cup day. Leading trainer, Darren Weir, has a strong hand in the Cup with his promising staying mare, Amelie's Star, coming right into calculations after winning the Bart Cummings Classic at Flemington. She has firmed right into only a half point behind Bonneval. Weir feels that she may be better suited in the Melbourne Cup where like the Caulfield Cup, Amelie's Star, will carry the luxury impost of 51.5 kilos. On the next line is the Darren Weir trained Australian Cup winner, Humidor, an international galloper, who has proved his worth since joining the Weir team. Since arriving in the Darren Weir camp he has gone from strength to strength, and is going to be in the firing line for a long time and the 2400 metres of the Caulfield Cup will be to his liking. Forget about his run behind the mighty mare Winx in the Turnbull,
Racing
with Ted Ryan he was off the bit before the turn likewise all the others. The David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig's international, Ventura Storm, who will go around in the Caulfield Cup, has come right in after finishing second to Winx. Ventura Storm is a six year-old gelding who joined the Hayes team last year, and is highly regarded in their camp. Another of the David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig trained, Harlem, is next in the market for the Caulfield after an impressive win in the Naturalism stakes, thus going straight into the Caulfield Cup, as the winner of the race gains automatic selection for the big one. He failed to flatter in the Bart Cummings race at Flemington, but is better than that. The six year-old international gelding has started 13 times for three wins with three placings. Harlem was most impressive in winning the Naturalism beating the likes of Samovare, Stampede and a pretty good field of middle distance stayers over the 2000 metre trip. When racing in France he was a listed stakes winner, so a touch of class is there, and he is in the right camp for a crack at the Caulfield Cup and the distance of 2400 metres won't worry him. A New Zealander who I do like is another Murray Baker trained run-
ner, Jon Snow, a winner of the ATC Derby at Randwick on a heavy track back in April, over the distance of the Caulfield Cup of 2400 metres. He was most impressive winning the J.R.A Cup at Moonee Valley proving too strong for Ecuador and Boom Time over 2040 metres at the tricky winding Moonee Valley circuit. He can sit up on the pace or a bit off them, and is a strong finisher, and his trainer is tops with stayers, as mentioned earlier with Bonneval and having won the Caulfield Cup two years ago. Two others with chances are the top Japanese galloper, Admire Deus, who leading jockey Craig Williams will ride in the Melbourne Cup and most likely the Caulfield Cup if they go that way. Williams is a big rap for the stayer who has class form in his country. Admire Deus has been working well at Werribee Quarantine Area, and has impressed track watchers. Of the other Inference who finished sixth in the Underwood, has ability, but the others appear to have him covered. COUNTRYCUPS COMING UP A number of our major country clubs are gearing up in the next few weeks for their big Cup meetings and I am rapt again to be a part of the action on the big days. I love this time of the year working for most of the major country clubs, the first of these is at Bendigo, although not a Cup meeting it is run on Caulfield Cup Day, with the day attracting many racegoers to their highly anticipated Beach Wear Day. Only an hour and half from the CBD, the Bendigo Club always put on a great day under the guidance of popular CEO, Aaron Hearps. The fields are always on the quality side and you can enjoy a great day not only watching all the action at the picturesque track at Bendigo, but catching the running of the Caulfield Cup on the big screens and others dotted around the course. The Geelong Racing Club is busy gearing up for their big Cup Day on Wednesday October 25. The Cup always attracts some of the best stayers not only in Australia, but Internationals.
Local Theatre Harold Pinter’s Betrayal
● Eleni Miller and Tim Constantine in Betrayal. Photo by Harry Millward ■ Avid and Tangled Web Theatre Productions unite to present their production of Harold Pinter’s relationship drama Betrayal, directed by Bruce Cochrane, featuring Michael Fenemore, Eleni Miller, Tim Constantine and Matthew Laurence, from November 15 – 19 at the Northcote Town Hall. Betrayal begins at the end of the affair, and pursues the journey to its very beginnings. As memory reels backwards towards the moment the affair started, the lies tangle into a web of deception, and betrayal begets betrayal. Of the countless eternal love triangles written for the stage, few have matched Nobel Prize-winner Harold Pinter’s gripping depiction of infidelity – as intricate as a spy novel with its cross and double cross. Inspired by Pinter's clandestine extra-marital affair with BBC Television presenter Joan Bakewell, which spanned seven years, from 1962 to 1969, the plot of Betrayal integrates different permutations of betrayal relating to a seven-year affair involving a married couple, Emma and Robert, and Robert's "close friend" Jerry. Betrayal is naturalistic, with none of the surreal comic menace of Pinter’s earlier plays as the story is told in reverse – with a twist. Performance Season: November 15 – 19 at 8pm (Matinees Sat 18 and Sun 19 at 2pm). Venue: the Northcote Town Hall, Studio 2. Tickets: Full: $27 Concession: $25 (90 minutes. No interval) Booking: www.northcotetownhall.com.au - Cheryl Threadgold

■ The second round of the Yea Golf Club Men's Championships was held on Saturday and in all three grades the result is still in doubt. In A-Grade, Gary Pollard now holds a oneshot lead over Brian Simmons; Greg Clements leads B-Grade by five shots from Jonathan Fisher; and in C-Grade Malcom Bett leads Terry Chaplin by three shots. Greg is the leader in the handicap section with 143 from Malcolm on 144 and Carlo Maffei on 145. Saturday's winner was Cal Maffei with an excellent nett 69 from his handicap of 26. Carl won on countback from Greg Clements. In the grades Rick Wills won A-Grade with nett 73. Greg took out B Grade, and Carl the CGrade. Jonathan Fisher won the daily putting and no one was nearest the pin on the 11th. ★ Wednesday golf saw 12 men contest both 4 Ball and Individual Par on a mostly sunny day. The course is in excellent condition with plenty of roll on the fairways. Winner of the individual event was Carl Maffei with a score of -1 , with Gary Pollard second on CB from Peter Williams third with a -2. Bob Glenister knocked off NTP on the 11th with his second shot. His first hit the racecourse rail and had to be replayed. Rob O'Halloran won the Club Award. In the 4 Ball, Gary and Rob combined somehow to win with +5, with Michael Spagnolo and Carl Maffei second with +4. Good to see Graeme Bryant and Allan Thatcher coming back to golf. - Gary Pollard

■ Yea hosted their first home game taking on Kilmore. Yea won the toss and elected to bat with Ben Tarran (19) and Darcy Pell (14) getting off to a good start only losing one wicket until the halfway point of the innings. Yea again succumbed to a middle order collapse but through a strong innings from Cam Armstrong (54) being supported by Andrew Chisholm (23), Yea were able to build their total to 128. Yea got off to a fast start with the ball with young quick Aidan McSpeerin taking three early wickets. Yea were on top early having Kilmore 4/34. However Kilmore fought back until Ben Tarran took one of his four wickets to have the score 5/75. Kilmore looked to get close to the score before Andrew Chisholm took his second wicket for the day to have Kilmore 9/112. With less than two overs to go and Kilmore needing 14 runs to win, Ben Tarran took his fourth and final wicket to give Yea their first win for the season. A-Grade travel to Tallarook for this weekend's match.

EAST CENTRAL DISTRICT RIFLE ASSOCIATION REPORT
■ The Violet Town Shooting Complex las Saturday was the site of the 9th Dragon Diese Challenge. The outstanding spring day was complemented by the fact that the notorious Violet Town wind, that has recently plagued the East Central District Rifle shooters, took a holiday. The event attracted 40 participants from the Australian Deer Association, Euroa Clay Target Club, East Central District Rifle Association and adjacent rifle clubs each competing for recognition among their clubs as “top shots”. A significant difference for this, the 9th Challenge, was the strong female contingent from the hunters including a guest appearance by Steph Ryan MLA Euroa, who joined in and sho a credible 21 out of 35 at 300yards. The format for the event was modified to reward those competitors who were true “al round” sportspeople, with events that represented the challenges of the Olympic Biathlon even (shooting off-hand at 100 yards distance), the Commonwealth Games target rifle event (shooting deliberately from the prone position at 300 yards distance) and the Olympic Trap Shooting event (shooting clay targets with a shotgun) The day started well for the target shooters with Dave Wallace (ECDRA) taking both the 100yard and 300-yard top score while the “Old Gnarly” 303 challenge went to Wally Dergacz (ADA). The 300-yard shoot marked the end of the rifle section and a chance to thank Rosco Davis for excellent job he did in the butts. The scores showed that the Challenge could have gone either way at this point and time for lunch. Lunch included the special treat for those choosing to try Richie Timms’s superb game sausages that were cooked to perfection by Geoff James. After lunch it was onto the final and deciding stage of the Dragon Diesel Challenge, the clay target round. Individual winners were: The grand aggregate; 1st Wayne Stiff (ADA) 75/85, 2nd Matthew Frazer (ECDRA) 70/85, 100 yds; 1st Dave Wallace (ECDRA) 23/25, 2nd Bill Pemberton (ADA) 21/25, 300 yds; Draw Dave Wallace (ECDRA) and Brian Houlihan (ECDRA) 30/30 “Old Gnarly” challenge (303 rifle competition) 1st Wally Dergacz (ADA visitor from Westernport Branch) 29/55, 2nd Graeme Kerr (ECDRA) 28/55 and clay targets; 1st Tony Rohlach (ECTC) 29/30, 2nd Rob Stackhouse (ECTC) 28/30. Andy Friedel (ADA) as he distributed the Dragon Diesel trophies along with the special Clay Target trophy confirmed, tha the event had been a great success .
