■ Transit Crime Investigation Unitdetectives are investigating a sexual assault on a bus from Moonee Ponds to Brunswick. Investigators have been told a 48-year-old woman boarded the bus on Patterson St, Moonee Ponds.

Whilst seated on the bus a man approached the woman and sexually assaulted her. The woman tried to move away from the man and he followed her to the front of the bus.

She disembarked the bus at the intersection of Sydney Rd and Brunswick Rd, Brunswick, and the man continued to follow and harass her until she was able to seek help from a member of the public.

He then fled on foot north along Sydney Rd.

Dusty, original Pop Diva ■ Babirra Music Theatre presents Dusty – the Original Pop Diva until October 20 at the Whitehorse Centre, Nunawading.

Directed by Christian Cavallo, with musical direction by Stacey-Louise Camilleri, and choreography by Jessica Mohl, the show tells of the story of Dusty Springfield.

Dusty’s real name was Mary O’Brien and she became regarded as the most influential British female artist of the 1960’s. Known as the White Lady of Soul, she was responsible for bringing the Motown sound to the UK. But despite the string of hits, the sell-out concerts, the regular TV appearances and the legion of fans, Dusty/Mary was forever fighting her self-doubt.

This is her story and the story of her music.

From humble beginnings in North London, Dusty, blessed with an amazing voice and talent, dares to dream.

Despite no encouragement from her parents (who saw her older brother Dion, later to be known as Tom Springfield, as the talented one), Dusty was not to be deterred, and transformed herself into the blonde pop icon who would dominate 1960s music.

Melbourne Arts Otello Melbourne Opera Otello's original premiere is considered a milestone in the history of opera, while Melbourne Opera's Australian premiere will mark the 159th anniversary of Rossini's death.

Based on Shakespeare's famed play Othello, Rossini's opera was an instant hit when it was first performed in Italy in 1816.

It remained incredibly popular until the late 19th century when it was eclipsed by a new version of the opera by Giuseppe Verdi.

Since then, Rossini's masterpiece has been somewhat overlooked and much more rarely performed, until the late 20th century when it began to be performed again in Europe, leading to a triumphant production at Covent Garden in 2000.

Rossini's Otello is immensely influential in the history of opera, particularly in the third act (the murder of Desdemona), where Rossini breaks new ground in operatic drama and sets the stage for composers such as Bellini, Donizetti and early Verdi.

Bruce Beresford, as Director, has set the production in the setting that Rossini intended, 15th Century Venice.

The season opens tonight (Wed., Oct. 17) and runs October 20, 24 and 27. At 7.30pm Venue: Athenaeum Theatre Collins St. Melbourne.

Winner named

■ MGA Foundation has announced that Melbourne-based artist Hoda Afshar is the winner of the $30,000 William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize for her photograph portrait of Behrouz Boochani, Manus Island.

The judges, Dr Michael Brand, Director of the Art Gallery of NSW; Melbourne-based artist Dr David Rosetzky; and Anouska Phizacklea, MGA Director, were unanimous in their decision to award Afshar the coveted prize, agreeing that the portrait, with its immense visual, political and emotional presence, is worthy of attention and reward.

An exhibition of all finalists is now on display at MGA until November 18.

Gallery visitors are encouraged to vote for their own favourite in the Sotheby's 'Australian People's Choice Award.

Afshar's portrait of Behrouz Boochani is compelling and powerful.

It is a haunting portrait that speaks to the history of photography.

Boochani's gaze . the fire that burns behind him, the way his body is positioned - it has an intensity and power that is undeniable.

Jekyll and Hyde A major player in this ultimate theatre experience is Mark Doran’s brilliant portrayal of gentle, caring Henry Je kyll and the evil Edward Hyde.

Doran’s beautiful, rich singing voice, skilled acting and captivating stage presence is of the highest professional standard.

Indeed, Kingma’s cast are all obviously ‘top of the tree’ musical theatre artists. Other standouts for me were Rachel Rai’s endearing performance as Lucy, Catherine Hancock (Emma), Daniel Mottau (John), Ben JasonEaston (Boy), Ric Birkett (Sir Danvers Carew) and Ian Andrew (Simon).

Tyson Legg’s great orchestra and Tamara Finch’s choreography - wonderfully stylised and executed perfectly – complete this unique theatre experience. Congratulations to all.

The story may not appeal to everyone, but Jekyll and Hyde the Musical is a truly memorable theatre experience.

Tolarno Galleries Dawn Chorus - Nicholas Folland Recently announced as having been selected to exhibit in the National New Australian Art 2019 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Nicholas Folland presents Dawn Chorus, his second solo exhibition at Tolarno Galleries.

Dawn Chorus is an allusive and fragile landscape comprising Wake, wail and jive, a delicate installation composed of quivering, hand-woven wire forms a group of woven sculptures entwined with found Stuart Crystal and Webb Corbett crystal vases and a series of almost imperceptible white-on-white embossed drawings.

The irony being that to produce 'barely there' drawings required the most intense physical effort as every mark of a white ballpoint was heavily pressed into the reverse side of each sheet of paper top form an exquisite, minimalist embossed front surface.

Exhibition closes November 3.

Record for North Melbourne

■ What an exciting Grand Final of AFL football. Many expats and I watched the game live here in Los Angeles.

It was thrilling to the end. I was at former program director of 3AW in the eighties, Terry Smith's house in the Valley, which was decked out in black-and-white with horns and whistles to be blown when Collingwood scored a goal or behind.

It was a great atmosphere until the last two minutes of the game when the horns and whistles stopped.

West Coast is a strong team all over the ground and they have won the flag in 1992, 1994, 2006 and now 2018.

North Melbourne Football Club has a lot to do with their success. West Coast coach Adam Simpson played 306 games for North Melbourne and was at the club for 14 years.

Backline coach is Daniel Pratt who played 116 games for North Melbourne.

What a record for North Melbourne with the sixth premiership in 10 years won by former North Melbourne players.

Alastair Clarkson, four premierships for Hawthorn; John Longmire, one premiership for Sydney Swans; and now Adam Simpson ,one premiership for West Coast Eagles.

Celine says farewell ■ Celine Dion is saying au revoir to her longtime tenure at Caesars Palace.

After eight years at The Colosseum, the 50-year-old songstress will end her residency in 2019.

Dion first took the Las Vegas stage in 2011 and is currently set to perform through to January 20.

Pink’s: best in California ■ Many Angelenos consider the chili cheese dog at Pink's Hot Dogs on La Brea Avenue the best around, and now it's official.

People magazine named the chili cheese dog the best in California, which has the hot dog stand's owner tickled pink.

The honour was the latest in a long list of accolades bestowed upon Pink's, world famous for its hot dogs, many of which are named after the celebrities who frequent the stand.

They include the Emeril Legasse Bam Dog, a nine-inch stretch dog with mustard, onions, cheese, jalapeños, bacon and coleslaw and the Martha Stewart Dog, a 9-inch stretch dog with relish, onions, bacon, chopped tomatoes, sauerkraut and sour cream.

Autographed photographs of the celebrities who frequent the stand adorn the walls in the dining room. Famous guests often wait in line with eager diners from around the world who flock to the stand for their favorites.

Pink's Hot Dogs has scored another honour, the intersection of Melrose and La Brea Avenue will be designated Pink's Square.

The Los Angeles City Council approved the designation in late March and the logistics are being worked out. Plans call for the crosswalks to be painted pink.

Richard Pink said the People magazine honour expands the stand's legacy and he expects it will inspire more people to eat there when visiting Los Angeles.

Hot dog fans outside of Los Angeles can also enjoy Pink's Hot Dogs, as the company has franchises in Las Vegas, Miami, New York and Ohio, as well as the Philippines.

Pink opened Madison, Wisconsin last week, where a Pink's Hot Dogs was opened at a water park.

"I am so proud to be among such an illustrious group of the best hot dogs throughout the United States," Richard Pink added. "We were very honoured."

Rights for Nicole, Studios ■ Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to Meg Wolitzer's novel, The Female Persuasion, with Nicole Kidman producing.

Kidman will produce the film adaptation through her Blossom Films production banner, which recently signed a first-look deal with Amazon. Lynda Obst and Per Saari will also produce, with This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger attached as screenwriters and executive producers.

The Female Persuasion will be a topical film, as it follows a college student named Greer Kadetsky who is groped by a serial abuser at a party and speaks out, only for her university to not take action. It will be the second film by Wolitzer to be adapted into a feature film, following the Glenn Close/Jonathan Pryce drama The Wife, which was released by Sony Pictures Classics last month.

The deal also comes amidst a period of major change for Amazon Studios, as Julie Rapoport was also promoted Wednesday by studio head Jennifer Salke to co-head of the film division, with particular aim on developing films with mass appeal as opposed to the studio's previous focus on arthouse films like Manchester By The Sea and The Big Sick.

■ In a significant symbolic blow to the Iranian regime, the Volkswagen Group, the world's biggest selling car manufacturer last year has reportedly agreed to end almost all of its operations in Iran, in line with the restoration of US sanctions on Tehran.

The news was disclosed by US Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, who since taking up his Berlin posting in May he presented his credentials on the same day President Trump announced the US was exiting the Iran nuclear deal has been encouraging the host government to isolate Iran and urging German companies to stop doing business there.

"Volkswagen has told us they will comply with US sanctions on Iran," Bloomberg quoted Grenell as saying.

"We are pleased with this decision because Iran diverts its economic resources away from its people to spread violence and instability across the globe."

■ America's national parks are warming up and drying out faster than any other US landscapes, a new study has found.

The report, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, is the first to examine rainfall and temperatures in all 417 US. national parks.

It found that, without a substantial reduction of greenhousegas emissions, national parks will become hotter and more drought-ridden in the decades to come.

"US National parks protect some of the most irreplaceable ecosystems in the world," the study states, adding that reductions in industrial emissions could "substantially reduce the magnitude" of expected effects.

The study found that, between 1885 and 2010, national parks warmed by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit twice the US. rate while annual rainfall declined by 12 percent, four times the rate of the US overall.

Afraid to tell jokes ■ Howie Mandel is pissed about the state of stand-up comedy and he's blaming political correctness for its demise. We got the comedian and America's Got Talent judge leaving Craig's in West Hollywood, and he launched into a tirade about why comedy sucks now for comedians.

Howie harkened back to legends like Richard Pryor who were revered for pushing the envelope but said anyone who tries that today runs the risk of destroying their whole career. It's gotten so bad; Howie says he's actually afraid to crack jokes in public.

■ The University of Maryland at College Park announced a new diversity support group to create a "safe space" for white students to discuss their feelings about "interactions with racial and ethnic minorities."

The support group, called White Awake, will help white students who may "sometimes feel uncomfortable and confused before, during, or after interactions with racial and ethnic minorities.

This group offers a safe space for White students to explore their experiences, questions, reactions, and feelings," the description explains.

"Members will support and share feedback with each other as they learn more about themselves and how they can fit into a diverse world."

■ Alan Rowe was born in Richmond in 1918 and spent his life in showbusiness as an actor, comedian, comedy impressionist, entertainer, and ventriloquist.

In 1939 he enlisted in the army and worked in the area of pay and supplies during the war years.

In 1944 he was appearing on 3UZ in a comedy show Chins Up with Roy Lyons.

This led to regular spots on radio variety productions such as The Shell Show and The Real McCoys.

Alan did a sketch with the famous English singer and film star George Formby.

In 1948 he starred in his own show Streamline, broadcast on 3DB. Alan wrote and performed the comedy sketches for the show.

The cast included Penny Lucas, Roy Lyons, Laurie Wilson, George Bellmaine and The Tune Twisters.

In 1949 Alan worked on the original television test demonstrations from the Melbourne Town Hall.

In 1951 he went to England to try his luck and performed in many famous English theatres including The Windmill Theatre in Soho.

In 1954 he toured with the famous comedy team of Laurel and Hardy in a show titled Birds of a Feather.

Around this time Alan created the character of ‘Kimbo the Koala’ and developed his ventriloquist act.

the couple sailed for Australia in 1957. Television was just beginning and Alan became a regular performer on the children's shows.

He worked on the Tarax Show on Channel 9 with Happy Hammond and was cast in the annual pantomime shows with performers such as Joff Allen, Ron Blaskett, Patti McGrath and Frank Rich.

Alan's dramatic career in television began with an appearance on Consider Your Verdict.

Over the years he acted in Crawford's productions, appearing in shows such as Homicide, Ryan, Division 4, The Sullivans and Matlock Police.

He played the ongoing character of ‘Albert James’ in the series Prisoner and had a role in

the feature film Dimboola. He is remembered for his Coles & Garrard television commercial where he played the optician who uttered the catch phrase "Your glasses won't be a moment Mrs Jones".

Alan was a keen railway enthusiast and he released two albums of train sounds which he performed himself.

He wrote plays and monologues which were sold through various outlets including Will Andre in the city.

I first met Alan Rowe through 96.5FM and he was a regular guest on That's Entertainment.

We always looked forward to his appearances.

Alan Rowe passed away in 1997 and I was glad that I made the visit to Geelong Hospital to say a final goodbye to a dear friend. Alan and Jean had two boys, Victor and Derek and two grandchildren Daniel and Sarah. Alan Rowe brought the gift of laughter into our lives.

Mrs Lirriper’s Lodgings - by Charles Dickens So I says “if you’ll excuse my addressing the chair Professor Jackman I think the period of the lecture has now arrived when it becomes necessary that I should take a good hug of this young scholar.” Upon which Jemmy calls out from his station on the chair, “Gran oo open oor arms and me’ll make a ‘pring into ’em.” So I opened my arms to him as I had opened my sorrowful heart when his poor young mother lay a dying, and he had his jump and we had a good long hug together and the Major prouder than any peacock says to me behind his hand, “You need not let him know it Madam” (which I certainly need not for the Major was quite audible) “but he IS a boy!”

In this way Jemmy grew and grew and went to day-school and continued under the Major too, and in summer we were as happy as the days were long, and in winter we were as happy as the days were short and there seemed to rest a Blessing on the Lodgings for they as good as Let themselves and would have done it if there had been twice the accommodation, when sore and hard against my will I one day says to the Major.

“Major you know what I am going to break to you. Our boy must go to boarding-school.”

It was a sad sight to see the Major’s countenance drop, and I pitied the good soul with all my heart.

“Yes Major” I says, “though he is as popular with the Lodgers as you are yourself and though he is to you and me what only you and me know, still it is in the course of things and Life is made of partings and we must part with our Pet.” Bold as I spoke, I saw two Majors and half-adozen fireplaces, and when the poor Major put one of his neat bright-varnished boots upon the fender and his elbow on his knee and his head upon his hand and rocked himself a little to and fro, I was dreadfully cut up.

“But” says I clearing my throat “you have so well prepared him Major — he has had such a Tutor in you — that he will have none of the first drudgery to go through. And he is so clever besides that he’ll soon make his way to the front rank.”

“He is a boy” says the Major — having sniffed —“that has not his like on the face of the earth.”

“True as you say Major, and it is not for us merely for our own sakes to do anything to keep him back from being a credit and an ornament wherever he goes and perhaps even rising to be a great man, is it Major? He will have all my little savings when my work is done (being all the world to me) and we must try to make him a wise man and a good man, mustn’t we Major?”

“Madam” says the Major rising “Jemmy Jackman is becoming an older file than I was aware of, and you put him to shame. You are thoroughly right Madam. You are simply and undeniably right. — And if you’ll excuse me, I’ll take a walk.”

So the Major being gone out and Jemmy being at home, I got the child into my little room here and I stood him by my chair and I took his mother’s own curls in my hand and I spoke to him loving and serious. And when I had reminded the darling how that he was now in his tenth year and when I had said to him about his getting on in life pretty much what I had said to the Major I broke to him how that we must have this same parting, and there I was forced to stop for there I saw of a sudden the well-remembered lip with its tremble, and it so brought back that time! But with the spirit that was in him he controlled it soon and he says gravely nodding through his tears, “I understand Gran — I know it MUST be, Gran — go on Gran, don’t be afraid of ME.” And when I had said all that ever I could think of, he turned his bright steady face to mine and he says just a little broken here and there “You shall see Gran that I can be a man and that I can do anything that is grateful and loving to you — and if I don’t grow up to be what you would like to have me — I hope it will be — because I shall die.” And with that he sat down by me and I went on to tell him of the school of which I had excellent recommendations and where it was and how many scholars and what games they played as I had heard and what length of holidays, to all of which he listened bright and clear. And so it came that at last he

“Major you are a clever man and you have seen much and not a doubt of it.”

“I’ll begin,” says the Major looking as tall as ever he did, “to- morrow.”

CHAPTER II— HOW THE PARLOURS ADDED A FEW WORDS

I have the honour of presenting myself by the name of Jackman. I esteem it a proud privilege to go down to posterity through the instrumentality of the most remarkable boy that ever lived — by the name of JEMMY JACKMAN LIRRIPER — and of my most worthy and most highly respected friend, Mrs. Emma Lirriper, of Eighty-one, Norfolk Street, Strand, in the County of Middlesex, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

It is not for me to express the rapture with which we received that dear and eminently remarkable boy, on the occurrence of his first Christmas holidays. After dinner our boy slipped away to his old stool at my esteemed friend’s knee, and there, with his hot chestnuts and his glass of brown sherry (really, a most excellent wine!) on a chair for a table, his face outshone the apples in the dish.

We talked of these jottings of mine, which Jemmy had read through and through by that time; and so it came about that my esteemed friend remarked, as she sat smoothing Jemmy’s curls: “And as you belong to the house too, Jemmy — and so much more than the Lodgers, having been born in it — why, your story ought to be added to the rest, I think, one of these days.”

Jemmy’s eyes sparkled at this, and he said, “So I think, Gran.”

Then he sat looking at the fire, and then he began to laugh in a sort of confidence with the fire, and then he said, folding his arms across my esteemed friend’s lap, and raising his bright face to hers. “Would you like to hear a boy’s story, Gran?”

“Of all things,” replied my esteemed friend.

“Would you, godfather?”

“Of all things,” I too replied.

“Well, then,” said Jemmy, “I’ll tell you one.”

Here our indisputably remarkable boy gave himself a hug, and laughed again, musically, at the idea of his coming out in that new line. Then he once more took the fire into the same sort of confidence as before, and began: “Once upon a time, When pigs drank wine, And monkeys chewed tobaccer, ’Twas neither in your time nor mine, But that’s no macker —” “Bless the child!” cried my esteemed friend, “what’s amiss with his brain?”

“It’s poetry, Gran,” returned Jemmy, shouting with laughter. “We always begin stories that way at school.”

“Gave me quite a turn, Major,” said my esteemed friend, fanning herself with a plate.

“Thought he was light-headed!”

“In those remarkable times, Gran and godfather, there was once a boy — not me, you know.”

“No, no,” says my respected friend, “not you.

Not him, Major, you understand?”

“No, no,” says I. “And he went to school in Rutlandshire —” “Why not Lincolnshire?” says my respected friend.

“Why not, you dear old Gran? Because I go to school in Lincolnshire, don’t I?” “Ah, to be sure!” says my respected friend. “And it’s not Jemmy, you understand, Major?”

“No, no,” says I. “Well!” our boy proceeded, hugging himself comfortably, and laughing merrily (again in confidence with the fire), before he again looked up in Mrs. Lirriper’s face, “and so he was tremendously in love with his schoolmaster’s daughter, and she was the most beautiful creature that ever was seen, and she had brown eyes, and she had brown hair all curling beautifully, and she had a delicious voice, and she was delicious altogether, and her name was Seraphina.”

“What’s the name of YOUR schoolmaster’s daughter, Jemmy?” asks my respected friend.

“Polly!” replied Jemmy, pointing his forefinger at her. “There now! Caught you! Ha, ha, ha!”

When he and my respected friend had had a laugh and a hug together, our admittedly remarkable boy resumed with a great relish: “Well! And so he loved her. And so he thought about her, and dreamed about her, and made her presents of oranges and nuts, and would have made her presents of pearls and diamonds if he could have afforded it out of his pocketmoney, but he couldn’t. And so her father — O, he WAS a Tartar! Keeping the boys up to the mark, holding examinations once a month, lecturing upon all sorts of subjects at all sorts of times, and knowing everything in the world out of book. And so this boy —” “Had he any name?” asks my respected friend.

“No, he hadn’t, Gran. Ha, ha! There now!

After this, they had another laugh and another hug, and then our boy went on.

“Well! And so this boy, he had a friend about as old as himself at the same school, and his name (for He HAD a name, as it happened) was — let me remember — was Bobbo.”

“Not Bob,” says my respected friend.

“Of course not,” says Jemmy. “What made you think it was, Gran? Well! And so this friend was

“Bless us!” says my respected friend. “They were very sudden about it.”

“So they all grew up,” our boy repeated, laughing heartily, “and Bobbo and this boy went away together on horseback to seek their fortunes, and they partly got their horses by favour, and partly in a bargain; that is to say, they had saved up between them seven and fourpence, and the two horses, being Arabs, were worth more, only the man said he would take that, to favour them.

Well! And so they made their fortunes and came prancing back to the school, with their pockets full of gold, enough to last for ever. And so they rang at the parents’ and visitors’ bell (not the back gate), and when the bell was answered they proclaimed ‘The same as if it was scarlet fever! Every boy goes home for an indefinite period!’And then there was great hurrahing, and then they kissed Seraphina and her sister — each his own love, and not the other’s on any account — and then they ordered the Tartar into instant confinement.”

“Poor man!” said my respected friend.

“Into instant confinement, Gran,” repeated Jemmy, trying to look severe and roaring with laughter; “and he was to have nothing to eat but the boys’ dinners, and was to drink half a cask of their beer every day. And so then the preparations were made for the two weddings, and there were hampers, and potted things, and sweet things, and nuts, and postage-stamps, and all manner of things. And so they were so jolly, that they let the Tartar out, and he was jolly too.”

“I am glad they let him out,” says my respected friend, “because he had only done his duty.”

“O, but hadn’t he overdone it, though!” cried Jemmy. “Well! And so then this boy mounted his horse, with his bride in his arms, and cantered away, and cantered on and on till he came to a certain place where he had a certain Gran and a certain godfather — not you two, you know.”

“No, no,” we both said.

“And there he was received with great rejoicings, and he filled the cupboard and the bookcase with gold, and he showered it out on his Gran and his godfather because they were the two kindest and dearest people that ever lived in this world. And so while they were sitting up to their knees in gold, a knocking was heard at the street door, and who should it be but Bobbo, also on horseback with his bride in his arms, and what had he come to say but that he would take (at double rent) all the Lodgings for ever, that were not wanted by this a boy and this Gran and this godfather, and that they would all live together, and all be happy! And so they were, and so it never ended!”

“And was there no quarrelling?” asked my respected friend, as Jemmy sat upon her lap and hugged her.

“No! Nobody ever quarrelled.”

“And did the money never melt away?”

“No! Nobody could ever spend it all.”

“And did none of them ever grow older?”

“No! Nobody ever grew older after that.”

“And did none of them ever die?”

“O, no, no, no, Gran!” exclaimed our dear boy, laying his cheek upon her breast, and drawing her closer to him. “Nobody ever died.”

“Ah, Major, Major!” says my respected friend, smiling benignly upon me, “this beats our stories. Let us end with the Boy’s story, Major, for the Boy’s story is the best that is ever told!”

In submission to which request on the part of the best of women, I have here noted it down as faithfully as my best abilities, coupled with my best intentions, would admit, subscribing it with my name, J. JACKMAN. THE PARLOURS. MRS. LIRRIPER’S LODGINGS. ★

Bleak House

Chapter I— In Chancery London. Michaelmas term lately over, and the Lord Chancellor sitting in Lincoln’s Inn Hall.

Implacable November weather. As much mud in the streets as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn Hill. Smoke lowering down from chimney-pots, making a soft black drizzle, with

flakes of soot in it as big as full-grown snowflakes — gone into mourning, one might imagine, for the death of the sun. Dogs, undistinguishable in mire. Horses, scarcely better; splashed to their very blinkers. Foot passengers, jostling one another’s umbrellas in a general infection of ill temper, and losing their foothold at street-corners, where tens of thousands of other foot passengers have been slipping and sliding since the day broke (if this day ever broke), adding new deposits to the crust upon crust of mud, sticking at those points tenaciously to the pavement, and accumulating at compound interest.

Fog everywhere. Fog up the river, where it flows among green aits and meadows; fog down the river, where it rolls deified among the tiers of shipping and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city. Fog on the Essex marshes, fog on the Kentish heights. Fog creeping into the cabooses of collier-brigs; fog lying out on the yards and hovering in the rigging of great ships; fog drooping on the gunwales of barges and small boats. Fog in the eyes and throats of ancient Greenwich pensioners, wheezing by the firesides of their wards; fog in the stem and bowl of the afternoon pipe of the wrathful skipper, down in his close cabin; fog cruelly pinching the toes and fingers of his shivering little ‘prentice boy on deck. Chance people on the bridges peeping over the parapets into a nether sky of fog, with fog all round them, as if they were up in a balloon and hanging in the misty clouds.

Gas looming through the fog in divers places in the streets, much as the sun may, from the spongey fields, be seen to loom by husbandman and ploughboy. Most of the shops lighted two hours before their time — as the gas seems to know, for it has a haggard and unwilling look.

The raw afternoon is rawest, and the dense fog is densest, and the muddy streets are muddiest near that leaden-headed old obstruction, appropriate ornament for the threshold of a leadenheaded old corporation, Temple Bar. And hard

by Temple Bar, in Lincoln’s Inn Hall, at the very heart of the fog, sits the Lord High Chancellor in his High Court of Chancery.

Never can there come fog too thick, never can there come mud and mire too deep, to assort with the groping and floundering condition which this High Court of Chancery, most pestilent of hoary sinners, holds this day in the sight of heaven and earth.

On such an afternoon, if ever, the Lord High Chancellor ought to be sitting her — as here he is — with a foggy glory round his head, softly fenced in with crimson cloth and curtains, addressed by a large advocate with great whiskers, a little voice, and an interminable brief, and outwardly directing his contemplation to the lantern in the roof, where he can see nothing but fog. On such an afternoon some score of members of the High Court of Chancery bar ought to be — as here they are — mistily engaged in one of the ten thousand stages of an endless cause, tripping one another up on slippery precedents, groping knee-deep in technicalities, running their goat-hair and horsehair warded heads against walls of words and making a pretence of equity with serious faces, as players might. On such an afternoon the various solicitors in the cause, some two or three of whom have inherited it from their fathers, who made a fortune by it, ought to be — as are they not? — ranged in a line, in a long matted well (but you might look in vain for truth at the bottom of it) between the registrar’s red table and the silk gowns, with bills, cross-bills, answers, rejoinders, injunctions, affidavits, issues, references to masters, masters’ reports, mountains of costly nonsense, piled before them. Well may the court be dim, with wasting candles here and there; well may the fog hang heavy in it, as if it would never get out; well may the stained-glass windows lose their colour and admit no light of day into the place; well may the uninitiated from the streets, who peep in through the glass panes in the door, be deterred from entrance by its owlish aspect and by the drawl, languidly echoing to the roof from the padded dais where the Lord High Chancellor looks into the lantern that has no light in it and where the attendant wigs are all stuck in a fogbank! This is the Court of Chancery, which has its decaying houses and its blighted lands in every shire, which has its worn-out lunatic in every madhouse and its dead in every churchyard, which has its ruined suitor with his slipshod heels and threadbare dress borrowing and begging through the round of every man’s acquaintance,

which gives to monied might the means abundantly of wearying out the right, which so exhausts finances, patience, courage, hope, so overthrows the brain and breaks the heart, that there is not an honourable man among its practitioners who would not give — who does not often give — the warning, “Suffer any wrong that can be done you rather than come here!”

Who happen to be in the Lord Chancellor’s court this murky afternoon besides the Lord Chancellor, the counsel in the cause, two or three counsel who are never in any cause, and the well of solicitors before mentioned? There is the registrar below the judge, in wig and gown; and there are two or three maces, or petty-bags, or privy purses, or whatever they may be, in legal court suits. These are all yawning, for no crumb of amusement ever falls from Jarndyce and Jarndyce (the cause in hand), which was squeezed dry years upon years ago. The shorthand writers, the reporters of the court, and the reporters of the newspapers invariably decamp with the rest of the regulars when Jarndyce and Jarndyce comes on. Their places are a blank.

Standing on a seat at the side of the hall, the better to peer into the curtained sanctuary, is a little mad old woman in a squeezed bonnet who is always in court, from its sitting to its rising, and always expecting some incomprehensible judgment to be given in her favour. Some say she really is, or was, a party to a suit, but no one knows for certain because no one cares. She carries some small litter in a reticule which she calls her documents, principally consisting of paper matches and dry lavender. A sallow prisoner has come up, in custody, for the half-dozenth time to make a personal application “to purge himself of his contempt,” which, being a solitary surviving executor who has fallen into a state of conglomeration about accounts of which it is not pretended that he had ever any knowledge, he is not at all likely ever to do. In the meantime his prospects in life are ended.

Another ruined suitor, who periodically appears from Shropshire and breaks out into efforts to address the Chancellor at the close of the day’s business and who can by no means be made to understand that the Chancellor is legally ignorant of his existence after making it desolate for a quarter of a century, plants himself in a good place and keeps an eye on the judge, ready to call out “My Lord!” in a voice of sonorous complaint on the instant of his rising. A few lawyers’ clerks and others who know this suitor by sight linger on the chance of his furnishing some fun and enlivening the dismal weather a little.

Jarndyce and Jarndyce drones on. This scarecrow of a suit has, in course of time, become so complicated that no man alive knows what it means. The parties to it understand it least, but it has been observed that no two Chancery lawyers can talk about it for five minutes without coming to a total disagreement as to all the premises. Innumerable children have been born into the cause; innumerable young people have married into it; innumerable old people have died out of it. Scores of persons have deliriously found themselves made parties in Jarndyce and Jarndyce without knowing how or why; whole families have inherited legendary hatreds with the suit. The little plaintiff or defendant who was promised a new rocking-horse when Jarndyce and Jarndyce should be settled has grown up, possessed himself of a real horse, and trotted away into the other world. Fair wards of court have faded into mothers and grandmothers; a long procession of Chancellors has come in and gone out; the legion of bills in the suit have been transformed into mere bills of mortality; there are not three Jarndyces left upon the earth perhaps since old Tom Jarndyce in despair blew his brains out at a coffee-house in Chancery Lane; but Jarndyce and Jarndyce still drags its dreary length before the court, perennially hopeless.

Jarndyce and Jarndyce has passed into a joke.

That is the only good that has ever come of it. It has been death to many, but it is a joke in the profession. Every master in Chancery has had a reference out of it. Every Chancellor was “in it,” for somebody or other, when he was counsel at the bar. Good things have been said about it by blue-nosed, bulbous-shoed old benchers in select port-wine committee after dinner in hall.

Articled clerks have been in the habit of fleshing their legal wit upon it. The last Lord Chancellor handled it neatly, when, correcting Mr. Blowers, the eminent silk gown who said that such a thing might happen when the sky rained potatoes, he observed, “or when we get through Jarndyce and Jarndyce, Mr. Blowers” — a pleasantry that particularly tickled the maces, bags, and purses.

Victoria Cup goes to NSW ■ Former Kiwi 8Y0 entire Tiger Tara was a brilliant victor of the (Group 1) $200,000 Pryde’s Easifeed Victoria Cup at Tabcorp Park Melton last Saturday giving Rossmoor trainer Kevin Pizzuto and reinsman Todd McCarthy their biggest wins to date in Victoria.

It was thought some eight weeks ago that the horse may never race again when involved in a horrific road accident, with Kevin having to pull him free of a wrecked float, but to the horses great intestinal fortitude, here he was winning the state’s second biggest feature for open class pacers.

Driven with aggression from gate two as the mobile pulled away in the 2240 metre feature, Tiger Tara with full speed up was able to cross pole marker Gotta Go Ya Hu one of three runners from the Menangle barn of Shane and Lauren Tritton entering the back straight on the first occasion.

The hot favourite Chicago Bull from Western Australia wasn’t used out of the gate from barrier three settling just off the speed as Mach Doro (gate 5) another of the NSW contingent eventually crossed to lead up the outside division giving Franco Nelson cover after he had worked extremely hard from gate six to settle outside the winner.

With around 1500 metres to travel, Gary Hall (Jnr) set Chicago Bull alight with a rush to park outside Tiger Tara for the final circuit with the pair going together for the last lap.

Just when everyone expected Chicago Bull to really turn on the pressure prior to the home turn, Tiger Tara in sections of 30.7, 28.9, 26.3 and 27.7 for the last half mile, went into another gear and raced clear on straightening to record a 12.2 metre margin in a 1-53.4 mile rate over Chicago Bull who battled on courageously, with bonny mare Carlas Pixel gaining inside runs from mid-field on the markers third a half head away.

Franco Nelson was fourth with the disappointment being Shadow Sax which weakened badly to finish in tenth place after leading up the three wide line from the bell.

A winner of the prestigious New Zealand Sires Stakes at three, Tiger Tara a son of Bettors Delight and Tara Gold has raced on 91 occasions for 29 wins and 33 placings, earning stakes in excess of $1,514,000.

■ Maryborough was the venue for trots on Monday October 8and Chintin (Macedon Ranges) trainer Ken Ward combined with Monegeetta's David Miles to land the Britannia Hotel Carisbrook Pace for C1 class over 1690 metres with improving 6Y0 Village Jasper-Skipper Patricia gelding Village Skipper. Showing no speed from the pole, Village Skipper became buried three back along the markers as Clem McArdle sped out from gate five to lead. When the well supported Lets Jazz It Up eased three wide from the one/one spot in the last lap, Miles extricated Village Skipper into the clear to follow her home.

Taken wide on straightening, Village Skipper finished his race off well to get up right on the wire by a head, with Lils Agle third after racing in the open. The mile rate 1-58.

Dictated terms

■ Buangor's Louis Franc was successful with more than handy Village Jolt-Bianca Jasper 5Y0 gelding Franco Jolto at Maryborough, taking out the Newsxpress Maryborough Pace for C1 class over 1690 metres.

With Burrumbeet's James Herbertson in the sulky, Franco Jolto starting from the extreme draw was sent forward shortly after the start to park outside the pacemaker Goodtime Junior, dictating terms to suit.

Applying plenty of pressure approaching the final bend, Franco Jolto answered the call and strode clear, holding a margin all the way up the running to record a strong 1.3 metre margin in advance of Polar Opposite which trailed the weakening leader, getting clear late, with Timmys Reject (three back the markers) third 5.4 metres away.

Weakened at end ■ At Kilmore Nagambie reinswoman Marika Eriksson snared the HRTC Bendigo Concessional Drivers Pace for C1 class over 2180 metres with Shadow Play-Shalon 6Y0 mare Heavenly Shades in a rate of 2-06.7.

Trained at Avenel by David Aiken, Heavenly Shades from gate four was given a sweet passage following the leader Lighting Colony which flew away from gate five for Mitch Turnbull.

Using the sprint lane, Heavenly Shades finished best to defeat the trotter Our Dreamlover which faced the breeze by a neck, with Lighting Colony weakening to finish third 4.2 metres away.

Extricated into the clear approaching the home turn, Albarock's quality told over the concluding stages, scoring by a neck from Dream To Share and Arty Guy in a 1-59 mile rate.

She drives me to the local mall to acquire my very first bra. It is November 1993. I am 10 years old.

“Twenty-five years, 8 cup sizes and hundreds of bras later, I wonder how much my breasts have impacted on my life, my view of the world and its view of me.”

A singer from a young age, Kitty has always relished any opportunity to perform.

When she entered the Sydney Burlesque scene in the mid 2000s her love of entertaining and her appreciation for vintage fashion and design found the perfect outlet.

For the next six years she shared her special brand of cabaret and musical theatre inspired burlesque routines with audiences in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Before relocating to Melbourne in 2016, Kitty was proud to be one third of the Sydney harmony group ‘The Hollywood Honeys’. She has also dabbled in community musical theatre productions.

Aboriginal Contemporary Art Masters of Aboriginal Contemporary Art Minnie Pwerle.

Celebrating the work of one of the world's great painters Minnie Pwerle (1929 - 2006) grew up at Utopia, a former cattle station 300 km northeast from Alice Springs, home to the Anmatjerre language group.

The story of her life was one of struggle and endurance. In 1999, at the age of 80, she took up painting and soon gained national recognition.

The use of her brushstrokes and bold vibrant colours became her trademark, as did paintings of small bush melons and women's body-painting designs.

The exhibition surveys Minnie Pwerle's oeuvre and features a series of unseen paintings including the very first ones she produced in 1999.

Exhibition closes November 25.

Bendigo Art Gallery Gothic Beauty From a 19th century Victorian horse-drawn hearse, to the pulsating futurist video work of Jess Johnson, Gothic Beauty traces early Victorian rituals of mourning and the pursuit of 'pleasurable terror' evident from the 1800s to contemporary times.

The exhibition, curated by and exclusive to Bendigo Art Gallery, includes dark and evocative works by contemporary artists Jane Burton, Bill Henson, Michael Vale and Janet Beckhouse, amongst others; alongside historic pre-Raphaelite paintings and objects, mourning jewellery and costumes drawn from public and private collections.

By the early 19th century, Gothic literature had become commonplace, and the ideals, including feelings of horror and escapism and the beauty and the sublime of landscapes, manifested throughout art and society and continue to endure into modern times.

Exhibition closes February 10.

National Gallery Factory of the Sun - Hito Steyerl The National Gallery of Victoria presents the Australian premiere of the ground-breaking video installation Factory of the Sun by German-born artist Hito Steyerl, who was named the number one artist onArtreview's 2017 Power 100 list.

Factory of the Sun, 2015, first shown at the 2015 German Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, is a fully-immersive installation tells the dystopian story of a group of workers in a labour camp.

The participants are forced to perform choreographed dance routines and their movements are transformed into a valuable commodity: artificial sunshine.

Review: Dusty ■ A unique interpretation of Dusty – the Original Pop Diva is playing until October 20 at the Whitehorse Centre, presented by Babirra Music Theatre.

Based on the book by John-Michael Howson, David Mitchell and Melvyn Morrow, the show tells the (mostly) biographical story of British pop-star icon and record-producer Dusty Springfield, including her relationship with the fictitious Reno.

Born Mary O’Brien in London, 1939, musically-gifted Dusty acquired her nickname from being a tomboy. We follow her career, performing with her brother, the pop-folk trio ‘The Springfields’, and her sensational solo career. Her alter-ego, young Mary O’Brien, remains in Dusty’s consciousness throughout her turbulent life.

Director Christian Cavallo’s research of queer dramaturgy studies and the biography Dancing With Demons, empowers this production to explore darker, ethereal elements of Dusty’s life. Jacob Battista’s set design, mostly comprising background and side curtains, basic furniture/props, with Daniel Gosling’s lighting and Steve Cooke’s sound design, work effectively to showcase Dusty’s story, allowing her to shine forefront.

Emily McKenzie is perfectly cast as Dusty Springfield, using her powerful vocals to belt out the songs and her beautiful acting skills to portray Dusty’s roller-coaster life.

Phoebe Bourke delights as Dusty’s alter-ego, Mary O’Brien, while Sarahlouise Younger (Dusty’s symbolic lover, Reno), presents a credible, nicely controlled characterisation.

First-rate performances are also enjoyed from charismatic James Ness (MC Terry Wogan), Jennie Kellaway (Kay O’Brien), Garry Barcham (Gerard O’Brien), Zachary Alaimo (Rodney), Ashley Taylor (Peg), Michael Syme (Tom Springfield), Brendy Ford (Lusty Dusty) and realistically speaking, from the whole cast.

Choreographer Jessica Mohl’s dance routines are fabulous. Sharp, visually commanding with unpredictability, and well- presented by vibrant, energetic performers. StaceyLouise Camilleri’s orchestra renders the wonderful tunes with gusto, and Leonie Campbell’s costume design mixes glitz, glamour and era authenticity. Wigs (Maren Holm) were terrific for conveying different eras.

Dusty Springfield’s music lives forever, cleverly conveyed by Cavallo and his team by the sparkling performers presenting Dusty’s songs in the Megamix finale.

A lovely touch by the Ushers wearing dusty-pink lapel roses. Congratulations on a top show.

Gothic ■ Award-winning composer Andrée Greenwell presents Gothic on November 25 at Arts Centre Melbourne.

Gothic, a multidisciplinary, eerie and elegant music performance, surveys European, Australian and American expressions of ‘gothic’ from medieval to contemporary times .

Featuring songs by The Cure, Kate Bush and Michael Jackson alongside new songs with lyrics by leading Australian writers, Gothic features stunning motion graphics by London-based artist Michaela French, projected across three ‘floating’ gothic-shaped screens.

Featured songs by Greenwell include Death at the Beach Motel about the death of Australian artist Brett Whiteley (with specially commissioned lyrics by Hugo Race, founding member of the Bad Seeds); The Birds after Daphne du Maurier’s short story set in Cornwall, famously adapted for cinema by Hitchcock and a ‘Totentanz’ or ‘death-dance’ inspired by the European medieval frescoes.

The performance is bookended by songs created from poems by Edgar Allan Poe including Annabel Lee and The Bells and also features song lyrics by Alison Croggon, Hilary Bell, Maryanne Lynch and Felicity Plunkett.

Andrée Greenwell established Green Room Music in 1997 to create innovative performance and screen works that are composition-led.

She has worked as an independent artist with leading organisations including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Festival, Arts House, Vivid, Bell Shakespeare Company, Riverside, Melbourne Festival, Chronology Arts Sydney Writers Festival, the ABC and Carriageworks.

`Tis The Season

After Hero ■ A piece of theatre in three distinct acts. staged by Monash University Centre for Theatre and Performance in association with Coopers Malthouse Theatre, writers Jean Tong and Jessica Bellamy created a new work that in their words is “ a work for everyone who is tired of the same old stories, because we are too”.

Act One by Jean Tong takes some understanding through a wandering script with the continuity of sequences not necessarily fluent. On a stage littered with random books and a central ring of books, which could be likened to the circle of life and learning, while inside the circle a drum providing rhythm for staged choreography.

Using Greek myths and a Greek Chorus and through Wolfie Sun as the Hero we are challenged by gender normality and the reimagining of Greek Mythology with the chorus seeking out their life’s conduit.

Jessica Bellamy’s Act Two was a clever and times provocative recreation of Jewish refugees sailing into a so termed New World.

While Act one had a central Hero we now had six individual identities, hopeful of what lies ahead for them as they sail to an unknown continent.

Through a narrative of dramatic tableaus, fervent vignettes, and spasmodic interpretive dances, viewers are invited to interpret what they see, hear and feel.

An outstanding show in the Melbourne International Arts Festival, featuring a collaboration between The Rawcus Ensemble and Invenio Singers, at Arts Centre Melbourne in the Fairfax Studio.

Rawcus is an award-winning ensemble of actors, living with and without disabilities whose performances evoke a profound sense of connection to universal human experiences.

The Rawcus Ensemble featured Clement Baade, Hannah Bradsworth, Michael Buxton, Harriet Devlin, Rachel Edward, Joshua Lynzaat, Paul Matley, Mike McEvoy, Ryan New, Kerryn Poke, Leisa Prowd, Louise Riisik, Prue Stevenson and Danielle von der Borch.

Nilgun Guven is the only support worker and performer, whereas the other staff members and associate artists worked behind the scenes.

The intense 65-minute show contains strong visual imagery that includes implied violence, intermittent extremely bright lights, abrupt loud noises, and dusty haze.

The sandy fume may irritate audience members who are situated close to the stage.

Using a compact and functional stage set, the actors were able to move in the dark with ease and create seamless scene changes.

The stagecraft elements were astonishing; Richard Vabre’s lighting design shocked the senses whilst Jethro Westward’s phenomenal soundscape juxtaposed sublime vocals of Invenio Singers against ambient mechanical sounds.

Invenio Singers’ music director, composer and ethereal vocalist Gian Slater harmonised within the trio to the dulcet tones of Josh Kyle and Louisa Rankin’s warm timbre.

The live non-diegetic soundtrack created a sombre world for the players to express their transient moods.

The performers were fully focused and completely in the moment, magnetically holding the attention of the audience at all times.

Charged with emotive choreography, the Rawcus Ensemble was extraordinary.

Stars **** Review: Dames Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith have let the cameras in on a friendship that goes back nearly six decades, as the four acting greats discuss their careers and reminisce about their humble beginnings in the theatre.

Funny, poignant and delightfully engaging BBC feature documentary from beginning to end with four of Britain's acting legends is like being a fly on the wall, or table, as they discuss their theatrical and cinema careers in detail, the highs and lows, along with personal issues, opinions and a slew of anecdotes.

From director Roger Michell, whose previous credits iclude "Notting Hill" (1999), "The Mother" (2003) with Daniel Craig, "My Cousin Rachel" (2017) with Rachel Weisz, "Hyde Park On Hudson" (2012) with Bill Murray, and "Venus" (2006) with Peter O'Toole, among others, has captured a treat for theatre and movie lovers of all generations. Highly recommended!

FILM: ADRIFT: Genre: Adventure/Drama.

Rating: M. Length: 96 Minutes.

Stars: ***½ Verdict: A true story of survival, as a young couple's chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as the two avid sailors face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.

Fact or fiction, stories on the big screen of survival at sea are plentiful, and this addition, among a sea of floundering cinematic water-logged debris, is one of the most gripping and well made efforts on the topic, excelling in all levels and overcoming any predictability by surviving on the human emotion throughout the journey convincingly, elements severely lacking in the other more recent true life sea adventure with Colin Firth as Donald Crowhurst in "The Mercy" (2018).

With far more on offer than what appears on the surface, Shailene Woodley gives a searing and captivating performance as Tami Oldham, as she battles all the elements that nature can bestow, as well as her inner emotions that range from poignant to gut wrenchingly real, a blood-sweat-and-tears performance of extraordinary physicality as it is psychologically or spiritually, aided by a convincing and effective performance by Sam Claflin as her partner, but this belongs to Woodley.

Tight, lean and beautifully filmed by nine time Oscar nominee and three time Oscar winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (Hugo, The Aviator, JFK), not without its flaws, most notably the flashbacks, this is an impressively realized work, a thrilling, taut and superbly crafted addition to a genre of ordinary people thrust into and extraordinary life and death situation, that thankfully nearly all of us will experience from the comfort of home, and will remain about as close as we ever want to get.

FILM: SICARIO - DAY OF THE SOLDADO: Genre: Action/Crime/Drama.

Year: 2017.

Rating: MA15+ Length: 122 Minutes.

Stars: **** Verdict: The drug war on the US-Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border, and to fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) reteams with the mercurial assassin Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) to kidnap the daughter of a Mexican Drug Lord and turn the cartel's against each other, but things soon go awry.

The second part of a planned trilogy, this follow-up to writer Taylor Sheridan and director Denis Villeneuve's powerful and nerve-shattering 2015 action-thriller has been well worth the wait, a daringly dynamic, blisteringly gritty, caustically dark and intensely unsettling journey that grips like a vice and slowly uncoils with a boiling and scorching energy ready to unleash at every turn without notice.

Stars Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro command every frame with forceful, brooding and aggressive tightness and tension, and supported unfailingly by Catharine Keener, Matthew Modine as the Secretary of Defence, and most notably, a stellar performance by Isabela Moner as Isabela Reyes, the kidnapped daughter of a Mexican Drug Lord.

With bristling cinematography by Dariusz Wolski, replacing Roger Deakins, and superbly paced, Director Stefano Sollima retains for the most part much of his predecessor's charm and dynamics, including the hair-raising score by the late Johann Johannsson, this time by his long time protégée Hildur Guonadottir, with equally commanding and powerful effect, and like "Jaws" (1975), translating music into 'a demonic character and menacing threat' on its own chilling terms.

Thrilling, unforgiving, intelligent, atmospheric, menacing, smart, eerily timely and ambiguously thought-provoking, this is a superbly crafted, pulse-pounding political thriller that will grip you from the first frame to the last, and have you clenching your nails and teeth in demand for the third and final instalment immediately after the credits are over.

Footnote: SICARIO: Spanish to English means "hitman," often used to describe the hitmen associated with the Mexican drug cartels, and SOLDADO is a Soldier Who Fights for a Cause.

Rourke’s Reviews A Star Is Born ■ (M). 135 minutes. Opens in cinemas October 18.

With four official versions, not to mention a myriad of imitations, already out there, the latest incarnation of A Star Is Born hits our screens, and while proving to be moderately entertaining, it cannot fully overcome the corn and formula of an oft-filmed scenario that has inevitably become shopworn cliche.

Bradley Cooper stars as Jackson Maine, a famous rock star who has been on top for a number of years.

Still bringing in the crowds, Maine has numbed his very public life through alcohol and drugs, and his tinnitus condition is getting worse and worse.

Into his blurred world comes Ally (Lady Gaga), an aspiring singer he happens to see performing at a drag bar.

Sparks fly, and before she knows it, Ally is touring with Jackson, and attracting a fanbase of her own.

As his career appears to be spiralling downward, Ally's is soaring skyward, and their romance will encounter a number of highs and lows.

Cooper makes quite a capable directorial debut (he also co-produced, co-wrote, and contributed additional music), and one has to admire him taking on a project that could have easily fallen on its face.

Inspired by not only the earlier versions, but also films such as The Rose, The Last Waltz and The Idolmaker, Cooper is confident in the vision he wants to project, but sadly the cliches inherent in the material begin to undercut his efforts, especially in the second half, and some of the storytelling is rather haphazard (the sudden introduction of Dave Chappelle's character is noticeably jarring).

Aiding Cooper immeasurably is the brilliant Matthew Libatique (regular cinematographer of Darren Aronofsky), who imbues the film with a gorgeous mix of grit and glitter.

Cooper the actor is fine, and convinces during the concert scenes.

Lady Gaga, while offering a pleasingly natural performance, never commands the screen, and isn't able to give Ally the necessary nuance and texture to make her journey truly compelling.

It's also a part that is hardly a stretch for the notoriously outrageous artist.

The supporting cast end up being more interesting than the leads, especially the wonderful Sam Elliott (who easily steals the film with the limited time allocated to him) as Jackson's older brother Bobby, Andrew Dice Clayas Ally's celeb-obsessed but supportive father (along with his close-knit group of friends), and Dave Chappelleas an old childhood friend of Jackson's.

AStar Is Born will be embraced by audiences who love an old-fashioned, unabashed soapie tearjerker (along with fans of Lady Gaga), but others may begin to tune out

once the cliches start to take over and the artifice completely kicks in.

However, I will look forward to see what Bradley Cooper does next behind the camera.

Bad Times At The El Royale ■ (MA). 140 minutes. Now showing in cinemas.

Aping Quentin Tarantino to a staggering degree, this bloated exercise in pop culture is nothing more than a weak facsimile, taking a feeble screenplay and stretching it out beyond all acceptable proportions.

Set at the end of the 1960s, the story alternates between several characters, all of whom have arrived at a rundown hotel called the El Royale for various reasons.

As the night goes on, these lost, tortured souls will confront one another, as slivers of their past are gradually revealed.

Writer/director Drew Goddard, who helmed the disappointing Cabin In The Woods, again misses the mark here, wanting to tell an absorbing, profound tale, but fails to inject his script with strong, colourful characters, sharp dialogue, and substantial plot threads.

He then makes these inadequacies all the more obvious by ludicrously protracting nearly every scene, highlighting its hollow nature even more (if this was a classic RKO film, it would have run 90 minutes at most).

The strong cast try (Lewis Pullman is the spitting image of his father, Bill), but are continually defeated by Goddard's needless selfindulgence.

Watch Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill instead (or even James Mangold's Identity).

The Soul Mate ■ (M). 97 minutes. Now showing at selected cinemas.

Compact and good-natured, this small-scale South Korean comedy/drama offers mild entertainment, but never really makes memorable use of its amusing premise. Jang-soo (Ma Dongseok) is a judo instructor who doesn't like helping others, except for his young daughter who needs a heart transplant. Tae-jin (Kim Youngkwang) is a dedicated policeman who inadvertently locks horns with Jang-soo, mistakingly accusing him of being a people smuggler.

When Tae-jin is attacked by gangsters over an incriminating memory card, his physical body lies in a coma, while his spirit roams the hospital corridors, and again he bumps into Jang-soo, who is the only one who can see him. Teaming up, the pair try to defeat the criminal crew before they can hurt those close to them. The story is kept simple, and after a shaky start, the film does get better as it goes along.

The cast acquit themselves nicely, but the script and direction remain undistinguished, keeping this nothing more than an agreeable time-filler.

■ The lyricism within Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer is what compels an investigation into human deprivation, perversion and sanity.

Mrs Venable (Jennifer Vuletic) wants Doctor Sugar (Charles Purcell) to lobotomise Catharine Holly (Kate Cole) as this young girl was the one who saw the depraved end of Mrs Venable’s son, Sebastian.

It was as if he’d been eaten alive by a pack of raucous children – the same ones from whom he sought gratification.

Much like a swarming flock of birds preying on turtle hatchlings eager for the freedom of the sea, Sebastian has fallen foul of the ravages of nature.

That same insidiousness also lies in Catharine’s own family who are happy to concede to Mrs Venable’s wishes to protect Sebastian’s name given the inheritance they hope to secure.

And even the good doctor has reason to comply as his research will be funded.

Cole’s evocation of the besieged Catharine, especially in the final moments of the play, is a rendering that serves as a plea for human understanding.

The long sustained commentaries from both her and Jennifer bookend the piece and make this a play of inaction as we listen to their respective appeals.

The other characters serve almost as prompts for the discourse.

This, in many ways, makes director Stephen Nicolazzo’s stylisation of character and movement unnecessary.

The extremes of nature are already in the characters and in the dialogue. Mrs Holly (Zoe Boesen), George Holly (Harvey Zielinski) and Sister Felicity (Caroline Lee) are parodies given the stereotypical costuming – George in cravat sized bowtie, adult blazer and boyish shorts.

And whilst the garden setting (Eugyeene Teh) evokes the mist and hanging foliage of the American south, the raised platform meant actors had to bow to enter and leave the stage.

The potential in William’s play lies in its appreciation of what social suppression, especially in areas of sexuality, foster within individuals and communities.

Nothing could be more topical in Australia at the moment.

This production is, perhaps, an opportunity missed to fully appreciate the disassociation felt by those not deemed acceptable.

TILL THEY ALL COME HOME ■ The Melbourne Welsh Male Choir will mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice with Till They All Come Home, a concert expected to pack out Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday, November 11 at 3pm.

The choir hopes that veterans and their families (and others) will make a day of it and come to the concert after Remembrance Day commemorations. RSL members are eligible for a concession price ticket.

The 50-strong choir will be joined by Marina Prior and Mike Brady. Much of the accompaniment will be provided by the Australian Youth Band.

Till They All Come Home is the brain child of Mike Lyons, who at 86, is one of the choir’s oldest members. Lyons was born a Londoner, and lived through the Blitz and the Battle of Britain.

“Till They All Come Home celebrates the music of both World War I and World War II,” Lyons said.

“World War I led inexorably to World War II and, despite the passage of time, both wars continue to resonate globally. Both continue to have dramatic and lasting effects on Australia. So much horror, so much death, so many lives otherwise destroyed.

“Through all of this, music both comforted and inspired. Some songs were not much more than propaganda and were destined to disappear before or soon after the cessation of hostilities. Others became big hits and have endured.”

Growing up during the London Blitz, Lyons became aware of the power of music through his father, who served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in World War I, and was part of a musical concert troupe entertaining servicemen and women in World War II. “Music helped us to both survive and appreciate life, whatever the circumstances.

There was no television so music, especially live music, was prized. Our family was twice bombed out of home by the Luftwaffe but we could put brave faces to the world thanks to songs such as Vera Lynn’s White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll Meet Again .”

Marina Prior will perform a Vera Lynn medley with the choir as well as We’ll Gather Lilacs , Sally Pride of our Alley , Wish Me Luck (As You Wave Me Goodbye) and the Edith Piaf standard, La Vie en Rose .

Prior’s grandfather was a World War I ANZAC, as were all his brothers. He was shot three times and sent back to the front three times. He was only 19. She has all his records.

Prior has performed more than 30 lead roles in stage shows throughout Australia, most memorably as Christine Daae in the original Australian production of The Phantom of the Opera, a role she performed for three years.

The choir’s program includes a medley of songs from both wars, a Gershwin showcase, and some Welsh favourites Cwm Rhondda and The World in Union . With Mike Brady, they will also perform Eric Bogle’s 1980 hit about World War I, No Man’s Land (Willie McBride).

Caulfield Cup classic Ted Ryan

■ The Caulfield Cup is coming up this Saturday. The Darren Weir trained, international galloper, Kings Will Dream and the good mare Unforgotten from the powerful Chris Waller camp have been among the early fancies.

Kings Will Dream continues to impress all and sundry backing that up with another run behind Winx in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington over the 2000 metre trip.

Since joining the Weir team from overseas he has impressed all and sundry with his ability racing amongst the elite we have to offer in Australia.

He won at Flemington back in March over 1800 metres and then backed that up with a most impressive win in the Mornington Cup over the distance of the Caulfield Cup of 2400 metres.

The win in the Mornington Cup, earned automatic entry into the Caulfield Cup and has long been one of the fancies for the big event.

At his last three runs he has run third in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield over 1400 metres to stablemate, Humidor, then buttered up with a good second behind Grunt in the Makybe Diva stakes over 1600 metres at Flemington.

At his last outing he wasn't far behind Winx and Youngstar, in third spot.

He will be hard to beat come the big day, but the barrier draw will play a big part.

The good mare, Youngstar, a winner of the Golden Roses and the Queensland Oaks has been heavily backed on her great run, second to Winx, in the Turnbull after doing all the hard work up front.

As a winner of the Queensland Oaks the distance will suit her right down to the ground, and Chris Waller gives her a big chance of him winning his first Caulfield Cup. On the next line is one of the Lloyd Williams team in the imported galloper, Homesman, who impressed with a narrow, but good win in the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on September 30.

Always in the firing line he hung on well to defeat anther formerinternationals in Tosen Basil, who is a big tip for the Cup around town.

Of the others in the Underwood, Humidor was third, finishing just behind first and second.

Wine Column ■ I can just imagine a mythical letter to one of my editors: "Do you mind telling your wine writer to stop banging on about Tyrrells?

They're just another winery after all."

And I can equally imagine my defence.

Firstly, they're not just another winery.

They're one of Australia's oldest familyowned wineries and there have only been four people - all of them Tyrrells, of course at the helm since the business was founded

by Edward Tyrrell when he took up a selection of land in the Hunter Valley in 1858.

Then came the legendary Edward 'Dan' Tyrrell, who made his first wine at age 18 and conducted his last vintage, aged 88, in 1959, just before he suffered a coronary and died.

He was followed by his nephew Murray Tyrrell, the 'Mouth of the Hunter', and famous for declaring every vintage the best of all time.

When Murray died in 2000 he was succeeded by his son Bruce, who is at the helm now. Three of Bruce's children - Jane, John and Christopher - wait in the wings, though given the family history of longevity they still have a while to wait.

Secondly, I'll do a deal with the mythical letter-writer. I'll stop banging on about Tyrrells when they stop producing some of the country's most outstanding varietal, regional wines.

The latest to reach this desk are five distinctive Hunter wines, designated as comprising part of the 'Single-Vineyard' range.

As young wines, they're not straight-forward and easy-to-drink. They're wines meant for cellaring and to engender conversation and debate.

I certainly had several lengthy discussions with myself as a tasted the quintet - mainly regarding which of three semillons I would include here for review.

WINE REVIEWS Tyrrells 2016 Belford Chardonnay ($40): Fermentation started in stainless steel, but was finished in French oak, some of it new. It's a lean sort of chardonnay, belonging in the distinctly stonefruit part of the flavour spectrum. It has many years of cellaring in front of it. If you must drink it now, do so with a full-flavoured chicken or fish dish.

Tyrrells 2016 Old Hut Shiraz ($40): The vineyard was planted in 2003 with cuttings from old shiraz grown in a nearby Tyrrells vineyard dating to 1879. It's a fruit-driven red that, like the best Hunter shiraz, is medium-bodied rather than robust in a Barossa sense. It will revel in being paired with a fine, grilled, medium-rare steak.

WINE OF THE WEEK Tyrrells 2013 HVD Semillon ($35): The Hunter Valley Distillery or 'Sign-Post' block first planted in 1908 and holding what Murray Tyrrell thought to be some of the valley's top semillon.

To me it's the fullest-bodied, most rounded of the three semillons in the range - the others are the Belford and Stevens from the same vintage - and, right now the easiest to drink. Try it with a simple dish of char-grilled white-fleshed fish.

Mythology and an ocean voyage ends with Act Three dealing with the unpredictability of life in Melbourne leaving us with many thoughts to ponder with really no defined answers, other than what we personally aspire to.

Some lines were lost through lack of volume and projection while one could not doubt the enthusiasm of the six member cast.

I wish theatre ensembles would resist the direction of completely clearing the theatre patrons at interval so allowing a change minimal or otherwise of the set.

Local company chosen as best in the world

For many years Deck-Doc has been supplying retailers throughout Australia with their premium range of timber and decking oils.

For the past three years, Deck-Doc has been predominantly selling their products online to service the whole of Australia as well as international customers.

Deck-Doc was recently chosen over other companies to supply their oils to an international company and is in the process of sealing an agency agreement for exclusive distribution and selling rights in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Deck-Doc timber oil is environmentally friendly and the business has been manufacturing unique, lanolin-based timber oil in Geelong for 15 years.

The formula was developed by Robert Hylands to preserve the natural oils and tannins in the timber.

The timbers oils and tannins determine the colour of the timber.

If the tannins dry out, the timber will lose its own natural colour.

The formula is made up of many different plant oils, waxes and lanolin and designed to stay soft and pliable when absorbed into the surface layers of the timber, therefore will not solidify and form a hard membrane of the surface.

It will move with the timber during all weather conditions preventing water absorption and drying out of the tannins.

Mr Hylands first developed the timber oil when he noticed there was nothing on the market that preserved the timber and protected the timber’s natural colour.

Before his time at Deck-Doc, he gained experience when he owned a factory making hand carved, handpainted wooden decoy ducks for duck hunters.

The timber used for the ducks had to maintain its natural colour and stay on the water without absorbing moisture.

After extensive research, he found lanolin (wool grease) gave excellent water repellency as well as UV protection.

Mr Hylands developed lanolin-based timber protection oil and found the water-repellent protection and preservative way far superior and says lanolin is “Nature’s natural UV protection”.

Lanolin comes from the wool of sheep and is extracted from the fleece.

It is a substance that waterproofs, insulates, and protects sheep from the cold, wind, rain and harmful CV sun rays.

Deck-Doc uses the best merino wool to extract lanolin.

Throughout history ancient mariners such as the Vikings used lanolin to protect, waterproof and preserve the wooden boards on their ships.

Many of the ships were away from their home bases for many years and their ships were subjected to wild storms at sea.

They survived thanks to the protection of Lanolin.

Deck-Doc invites all to visit their showroom in Moolap for free advice in a number of important issues concerning timber care.

There is a large selection of timber types that have been exposed to severe weather conditions, enabling people to understand the importance of choosing a suitable timber type. for the right application.

Learning to Ride

Balance Bikes from Ivanhoe Cycles Balance Bikes (also called training bikes) are pedalless bikes designed to provide fun and exercise and to teach the basic skills of steering, balance and co-ordination.
