KEVIN’S ‘GRAND DESIGNS’ Single launched
By DI ROLLE
● Ali McGregor
● Singer-songwriter Craig Johnston ■ Melbourne-based singer songwriter Delsinki Records (also known as Craig Johnston) is launching the second single from his debut EP on Sunday (Oct. 6) at Toff In Town, Swanston St, Melbourne from 7pm. He will be joined in a rare Melbourne appearance by Sydney troubadour Karl Broadie, who is launching his long awaited new album, and by pirate shred specialist Citrus Jam. Burnt Out By The Light was written in memory of Johnston’s former band mate and harmonica player Sonny Lewis, who died late last year. Delsinki Records is the first solo EP Johnston has released. Earlier this year he took it on the road, playing Hobart, Sydney and Melbourne and also appearing at the Adventure Bay Blues and Roots Festival and the inaugural Leaps and Bounds Music Festival. The four-song-EP also contains three other tracks - In Over My Head, Sanchez and What You Dream Is Not Your Fault. Each track has a corresponding film clip, which will be shown at the Toff as part of the multimedia presentation to launch Burnt Out By The Light. Prior to Delsinki Records, Johnston was the founding member of a band called Gretchen Lewis (2002), still a going concern whose sound continues to captivate Melbourne audiences. Last year he performed at the Sydney Opera House, the Perth Concert Hall and the Wool Shed (Gnaraloo) as part of the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s The Reef - a creative collaboration between Richard Tognetti, Mick Sowry and Jon Frank. This trip was the inspiration for some of the material on this EP. Tickets: $10 on the door at Toff In Town, Second Floor, Curtin House, 252 Swanston St, Melbourne on Sunday, October 6 from 7.00pm. ● Kevin McLeod ■ A lot of my friends love Kevin McLeod and are avid watchers of Grand Designs. He has become somewhat of a sex symbol and my friends love his stories. I discovered that he is a supreme storyteller and this is the first ever opportunity for Australian fans to see him live on stage; hear the stories and relive the tears and laughter as Kevin recalls grand dreams becoming a reality. The international hit television show Grand Designs will be in the spotlight as Kevin shares stories, anecdotes and inspiring footage from the much-loved television series. The best and worst builds, the relationships under pressure, the episodes that never happened and Kevin’s unique take on those that did. I have become quite a fan I must admit. In this premiere two-hour event Kevin will look back on the architectural and human stories that have most fascinated him over his long involvement on his shows on the ABC and Lifestyle Channel, examining the challenges and pitfalls designing and building viewers dream homes. For 14 years he has commented from the sidelines as he watched self-guilders follow their dreams. Now he will reveal what he was really thinking and what happened after the film crews moved on. This will be a fun evening. Kevin lives in Somerset in England and produces cider from his own orchard. His two ambitions remain to entertain and to make the building environment better – and consequently ‘make people feel better’. I don’t think I will be missing the opportunity to be entertained and informed by the totally charismatic Kevin McLeod. at 6.30pm on Monday, October 28, at The Plenary, Melbourne Convention and Entertainment Centre. Bookings: Ticketmaster 1300 139 588 or www.ticketmaster.com.au Kevin will also be appearing at Australia’s consumer home show, Grand Designs Live in Melbourne. ★ Ali McGregor never fails to disappoint and was looking for somewhere to take some friends little ones over the school holidays. The Beast ■ Eddie Perfect is a powerhouse of talent who enjoys challenging his audiences. And challenged is what they will feel in the forthcoming Melbourne Theatre Company production of his latest work, The Beast. Like David Williamson before him, Perfect holds up middle class life and its pretensions to a none too flattering mirror, much to the delectation of the audience. The Beast has been described as 'a cutting, modern day satire which tears our notions of morality to shreds with a hilarious rant on urban culture, organic lifestyles and infidelity.' Plenty of scope there for laughs and gasps. Perfect takes the audience on a journey with a group of close friends who survive a nasty near-death experience and decide on a tree change to clean up their lives, living sustainably in the country. But their idea of back to nature is a fairly romantic one, and when faced with the challenging task of killing a young cow, their lives start to unravel and they are forced to confront some uncomfortable truths about themselves. Directed by Iain Sinclair, the cast includes Tom Budge, Travis Cotton, Virginia Gay (familiar to television audiences from her role as Frances in Winners And Losers), Kate Mulvany and Hayden Spencer. Readers who saw Perfect's Shane Warne - The Musical will know that they are in for a rollercoaster journey in the theatre in Perfect's latest creation. You may be challenged, you may be intrigued, but one thing you won't be is bored - the word simply isn't in Perfect's vocabulary. The Beast runs from October 3 to November 9 at the MTC's Sumner Theatre in Southbank. www.mtc.com.au or 8688 0800. - Julie Houghton

TARANTARA!
■ The names Gilbert and Sullivan are most familiar ones to music theatre and opera lovers, but how much do we really know about the people behind the names? That's the premise behind Ian Taylor's musical play Tarantara! Tarantara! which is the next show being staged by one of Australia's premier Gilbert and Sullivan companies, Savoy Opera. This production is set for five gentlemen and three ladies, chorus and orchestra. The play tells the story of the famous Gilbert and Sullivan partnership; the meeting, the association with Richard D'Oyly Carte, the mounting success, the divergences of temperament, Sullivan's conflicting ambitions, Gilbert's obsession with his "lozenge" story and the trouble it caused. Sullivan's social life and its disruptive consequences, his ill health, the famous tragi-comic quarrel over a new carpet for the theatre - the list goes on…. For those who love Gilbert and Sullivan, and also those who just like the songs, there are musical excerpts from all the wellknown operas, including chorus numbers, threaded into the story, making it a fun night in the theatre with everyone's favourite 'bits'. The entire cast including Carte, Gilbert and Sullivan, sing the various parts, and there are also numerous supernumerary characters such as critics, friends, and reporters. The play is set in the late 19th century, and features

● Peter D. Flaherty ■ Six Of Hearts, a Kerry Davies production of plays by Peter Flaherty and Mark Andrew, will be presented as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival until Sunday (Oct. 6) at 7.30pm at Gertrude’s Brown Couch, Fitzroy. The most dramatic and funny moments in our lives often take place over 10 minutes or less, and leave people changed forever – if they survive! Short plays explore situations with a magnified intensity, compressing emotions and relationships, and the plays in Six Of Hearts are turning points in the lives of 16 characters. Six Of Hearts tells the stories of sexual relationships and battles and alliances between men and women. Payment for sex, talking about sex, dating strangers and long marriage. Writers Peter Flaherty and Mark Andrew first met in 2005 at the first Short and Sweet Festival, and their scripts have since been produced separately in Australia and internationally, winning prizes at various festivals, but never combined in a production. Six Of Hearts is directed by 2000 Geelong Fringe Festival winner Kerry Davies, who met Peter at La Mama Theatre last year when producing a play he performed in titled The Biography Of A Battler. When Kerry read Peter and Mark’s scripts she loved them, chose three from each writer which gelled well together, and produced Six Of Hearts. Turn To Page 111

AARON ROURKE’S MOVIE REVIEWS They Live
● THE GREAT ESCAPE: The all star cast WWII blockbuster headed by Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough and James Garner now celebrates its 50th anniversary, and still one of the best and most popular of all time. FILM: THE GREAT ESCAPE - 50th Anniversary Edition: Genre: War/Adventure.. Cast: Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, David McCallum, James Donald. Year: 1963. Rating: PG. Running Time: 172 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ****½ Verdict: Rousing all-star-cast Hollywood WWII adventure epic inspired by the true story of British and American POWs and the planning and execution of the mass escape from the 'escape proof' German POW camp Stalag Luft III. Tremendously exciting and entertaining, and though a bit of poetic licence has been taken with some of the character and plot points, it does not ignore the tragedy of the event. Everything is top notch, from the script, direction, set design, pacing, standout performances and knockout music score by the legendary Elmer Bernstein. The best of the best! FILM: IRON MAN 3: Genre: Action/Sci-Fi/Thriller. Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce. Year: 2013. Rating: TBC. Running Time: 130 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **** Verdict: A sequel to Iron Man 2 and continuation from the carnage of the blockbuster The Avengers this time our hero Tony Stark/Iron Man must revaluate things as his world is torn apart as a new nemesis, the terrorist Mandarin, unleashes his reign of destruction. This is a superlative follow up that is as good, if not better, than its predecessors. Robert Downey, Jr bang on the mark again as Tony Stark/Iron Man. The action is full-on and special effect are absolutely jaw-dropping. Director Shane Black, who last directed the wonderfully quirky 2005 thriller Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and created the Lethal Weapon franchise, delivers an standout adventure that is a hugely entertaining thrill ride! FILM: TOWER BLOCK: Genre: Thriller. Cast: Sheridan Smith, Ralph Brown, Jack O'Connell. Year: 2012. Rating: MA15+. Running Time: 90 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: *** Verdict: Six months after witnessing a murder, the only remaining residents on the top floor of a desolated Housing Block slated for demolition find themselves being picked off by a sniper, with those lucky enough to remain alive battling for survival. This taut and low budget thriller has a few plot holes, but that does not detract too much from the tension and terror they have to face as the body count rises. Sheridan Smith (Mrs. Biggs) and cast all work well and the end result is a tensely satisfying experience, and even though it could have been an even more gripping and fulfilling in more competent hands, it's still a captivating chiller. FILM: WAR GAMES - 30th Anniversary Edition: Genre: Thriller/Sci-Fi//Adventure.. Cast: Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, Ally Sheedy. Year: 1983. Rating: PG. Running Time: 114 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **** Verdict: With the ever changing world of computer technology since this first hit out screens in still Cold War period 1983 it's somewhat dated now, but this adds to the innocence and ignorance of those early days as a young computer buff unknowingly finds a back door into a military central computer in which reality is confused with game-playing of Thermo Nuclear War, resulting in a global alert and the real possibly starting World War III. A standout adventure ride filled with nail-biting tension increasing to unbearable heights as world nuclear war gets closer and closer and they try to stop it. Sharp and tight script is driven by knife-edged direction and capped off top performances. A great thrill ride with plenty of food for thought!
■ (M) (1988). 93 minutes. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray October 2. In response to the negative experience he had dealing with studio executives, who had no idea how to approach or market the big-budget action/comedy Big Trouble In Little China (1986) (****½), director John Carpenter (Halloween / The Fog / The Thing) returned to low-budget film-making with two back-to-back features. The first was the metaphysical possession movie Prince Of Darkness (1987) (****), and the other was They Live, a sci-fi/action/satire that sees Carpenter deliver one of his liveliest entertainments. Former WWE wrestler Roddy Piper is surprisingly good as Nada, a drifter searching for work during a time of high unemployment amongst the working-class in the US. Finding temporary construction work, Nada meets Frank (Keith David), who invites the newcomer back to his small disparate community where there is food and shelter. It is here that Nada encounters an underground group that are rebelling against the government, who use an iron fist to control the poor and downtrodden. In a secret storeroom there are boxes of innocuous sunglasses, but when Nada puts on a pair, he discovers that they allow him to see the world as it really is, and it comes as quite a shock. Carpenter's screenplay (under the pseudonym Frank Armitage) is clever in its construction and viewpoint, with pointed jabs at media brainwashing and material obsession, and there are many elements that still seem relevant in the GFC-effected world of today. Piper exudes a very likeable onscreen persona, and his physique makes the physical punishment he has to endure seem believable. Keith David (The Thing / Men At Work / Dead Presidents / Cloud Atlas) is terrific as Nada's reluctant partner Frank, and the two are also involved in a prolonged, incredible fight sequence that has to be seen to be believed. Carpenter again pays homage to other films, in particular the Quatermass series of the 1950s and 60s, with make-up effects that are deliberately retro. It is great to see this cult classic finally return to the home viewing format (and especially Blu-Ray), a gem that is ripe for rediscovery. RATING : ****.
Tabu
■ (MA). 118 minutes. Available on DVD October 2. A sleeper hit at last year's Melbourne Film Festival, Tabu is a moving, intoxicating ode to the early days of cinema, using the magic of movies to present a love story that is both passionate and tragic. ● Roddy Piper and Keith David see some strange sights in the cult favourite They Live. neighbour, the elderly and very eccentric Aurora (Laura Soveral). Aurora is a chronic gambler who has been spurned by her daughter for reasons unknown, and she feels responsible for the cold relationship between them. As events unfold, Pilar contacts someone from Aurora's past, a man called Gian Luca Ventura (Henrique Espirito Santo), who confesses to her the connection he has with Aurora. The story, set in colonial Africa, is revealed in flashback as we see a young Ventura (Carloto Cotta) and Aurora (Ana Moreira) slowly fall in love, amongst the growing turmoil happening in Africa at the time. This section is lovingly crafted as a silent film, with joyous musical interludes and narration by the older Ventura, elevating the affair into something completely mesmerising and enchanting. Co-editor/co-writer/director Miguel Gomes beautifully conveys the deep feelings of love, loss, and loneliness, and how such warm and emotionally enveloping sensations can become complicated and bittersweet. Gomes (a former critic) wears his love of cinema on his sleeve, demonstrating to the audience the true power of the moving image, and how those images can carry us away and effect us on many different levels. Performances are heartfelt, with Cotta and Moreira perfect as the young lovers, and there is also a standout turn by Madruga as the somewhat melancholy Pilar. Technically the film is first-rate, with Rui Pocas's luminous black-andwhite cinematography deserving special praise. Hypnotic and spellbinding, Tabu is the kind of inventive and involving film that showers the viewer with everything that is magic in cinema. DELUGE THEATRE
● Simon Chugg debuts in his solo show in the Melbourne Fringe Festival ■ Teenage boys don’t grow up they just get older. They remain obsessed with sex, drugs and rock and roll though they may take the form of Ron Jeremy jokes, Timothy Leary references and an obsession with Motley Crew. Self-deprecating with an easy charm Simon Chugg delivers a show about dreams. This coming of age comedy is peppered with pop culture references and interspersed with video montage and live music. A 2013 Raw Comedy finalist, Chugg has written, collaborated and performed with the likes of Tim Minchin and Michael Chamberlin. In this, his debut full-length solo show, Chugg bares his aspiring rock star soul and reveals his dream band formed with his mates at school was less the Rolling Stones, more Spinal Tap. Chugg is one of the new breed of comedians who speak truth to power and is at his best when he combines his humour with social commentary. Like fellow Australian comedian Nazeem Hussain or South African Trevor Noah, Chugg throws a spotlight on racial stereotyping. In particular on our most famous export, the multiculturallychallenged Ramsay St and its assortment of monocultural Neighbours, and the short-sighted advertising industry where Chugg competed for the token African Australian characters with his arch nemesis the Tim Tam Genie. Chugg’s comedy takes a gentle swipe but that doesn’t mean that it lacks punch. It is still a little rough around the edges and there are some flat moments but there is no doubting Chugg’s ability to tell a story and to carry his audience along with him. When: Thursday, October 3 at 8pm, Saturday, October 5 at 6pm. Where: Loop Bar, Meyers Place, Melbourne. Tickets: $18/$15, Groups 4+ $15. ● The publicity photo for Sean Paisley Collins who portrays Wilson in The Ruffian On The Stair, by Joe Orton, presented by Deluge Theatre Company from Tuesday, October 15, to Saturday, October 19, at the Revolt Artspace, 12 Elizabeth St, Kensington. ■ Directed by John Wonnacott, The Ruffian On The Stair is Joe Orton’s first play, a dark comedy written in 1963. The story concerns a working class couple visited by a mysterious stranger asking for a room. But it quickly becomes apparent that the stranger may be seeking retribution for the death of his brother who was killed in a hit-and-run accident. As in all of Orton’s plays,The Ruffian On The Stair examines social mores, sexuality, religion and the English language with hilarious, yet often devastating results. An independent theatre company, Deluge Theatre strives to create a whole theatre experience dedicated to challenging the audience and performers alike. Engaging in topics that are confronting, bold and sometimes controversial, they endeavour to utilise works from both Australian and international writers while creating work for local theatre artists. The cast includes Trudi Boatwright, Kain Baigent and Sean Paisley Collins. Performance Season: October 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 at 7.30pm. Venue: Revolt Artspace Melbourne, 12 Elizabeth St, Kensington. ROLLERCOASTER THEATRE ■ Rollercoaster Theatre proudly presents The Noahs from October 9-11 at St Martins Youth Arts Centre, South Yarra. The Noahs follows the journey of those hurled outside the norm who grapple to find solid ground beneath their feet. Directed by Sarah Sutherland and Jess Huon, this insightful premiere clocks the brutal human tendency to objectify the other in order to keep one’s own head above the ever-rising water. Rollercoaster Theatre was formed in 2006, when graduates of the Ignition Theatre training course, the only accredited theatre-making course for people with intellectual disabilities in Australia, discovered limited opportunities for people with disabilities. This ensemble is a vibrant, bold new generation of performers with disabilities, who are passionate about theatre-making. The company works to provide a training ground to develop further the artistic performance talents of Ignition Theatre graduates and other similarly qualified people with disabilities. It also provides continuing education and vocational training in theatre management, production and performance, and promotes the ensemble through performances. Production and performance credits include: Carolyn Bock (Assistant Director), Nick Papas (Dramaturgy), Zoe Arnott (Set/Costume Design), Richard Vabre (Lighting Design), Chris Wenn (Sound Design), Michael Carmody (Video Design), Rachel Edward (Production Manager), Katie Lockett (Stage Manager), Jess Huon, Carolyn Bock, David Baker, Michael Buxton, Elisheva Jones-Resnik, Shea MacDonough, Ryan New, Erin Pocervina, Andrew Tresidder, Melissa Slaviero and Cameron Stanley (performers). BIG NIGHT TOMORROW ■ One of the biggest nights of the year in horse racing will be held at the Peninsula at Docklands tomorrow night (Thurs., Oct. 3). Seven category award winners will be unveiled before the Sky Racing World Australian Racehorse of the Year is crowned. The night will commence with the official launch of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, followed by a special presentation to celebrate 60 years of training for the legendary Bart Cummings. The categories are. best champion twoyear old, three- year old filly, three year-old colt or gelding, champion sprinter, champion middle distance performer, champion stayer award and the champion jumper award and the big one the Australian Racehorse of the Year, with odds on fancy Black Caviar, to win again. It will be a great night and I will follow up the extravaganza in next week's column.
Guineas clash
■ With the running of the Caulfield Guineas only weeks away, punters are treading warily with the Peter Snowden trained, Long John, just the favourite in front of Prince Harada. Long John has been ultra impressive in his runs so far and is crying out for the 1600 metres of the Guineas. The second favorite, Prince Harada, has had no luck in his past two runs. It is common knowledge that Prince Harada's trainer, Tony Vasil, has a very high opinion of the Haradasun colt. He has openly declared that he is better than two of the best he has through his stables, in Elvstroem, a winner of the 2004 Caulfield Cup, a Victoria Derby, and an international race overseas. Haradasun was also an outstanding galloper, running third in a Cox Plate. Two starts back Prince Harada was badly blocked for a run behind, Fast'n'Rock-

ing at Caulfield, then had no luck in Sydney at his next outing, when he was blocked for a run after drawing awkwardly in barrier one at his first start the reverse way. Vasil has decided to not give him another run before the Guineas, as he stated he is a clean winded colt and will be freshened up with track gallops and a relaxing time in the pool. On the next line of favouritism, is Bullpoint, who flashed home from a long way back in Sydney last start, and is another who will be suited by the longer trip. The Peter Moody trained Dissident is racing very well, and the stable is due for a bit of luck. Fast'n'Rocking was unplaced in Sydney after a brilliant win at Caulfield, but was never out of trouble like Prince Harada, and is with the astute trainer, David Hayes. I am sticking with Prince Harada on his own turf and the judgment of his trainer, Tony Vasil, to get him home.
I remember talking to Tony at Flemington after his first win at Moonee Valley, and he advised me not only to back him in the Caulfield Guineas, but follow him up in the Cox Plate. Now that is a big rap.
Thousand Guineas
■ Top class filly, Guelph, named after a town in Canada, is the one to beat in the One Thousand Guineas after another outstanding run to win the Group 2, Coolmore Tea Rose Stakes, at Randwick recently. I have been a big rap for the leggy filly when I first saw her win at Caulfield, and she has gone on from there. Her trainer, Peter Snowden, has always had the One Thousand Guineas in mind for the daughter of Exceed and Excel, from the very good race mare, Camarilla. The big filly made it five wins from her
nine starts with two seconds in the Coolmore and did it easily. The Victorian filly, Politeness, is second favourite, but I thought she was a bit disappointing behind Gregers at Caulfield, when third. Prepared by Robbie Smerdon and raced by Phil Sly, who had the good race mare, Mosheen, Politeness, would have to pick up on that run to trouble Guelph. The run of the Mick Kent trained Marianne was quite good, and will appreciate the 1600 metre trip. The winner of the Guineas Prelude, Gegers, from the David Hayes camp, was most impressive, but once again I feel Guelph has her mea-

Safely held the margin
■ Local (Dunnstown) trainer/driver David Murphy snared a stable double at Bray Raceway Ballarat on Wednesday September 25, with a pair of Modern Art four-year-old entires - much improved Desdon Murruffy taking the Megamerch Rural Merchandise Pace for C0 class over 2200 metres and Super Zeck the Peter McErvale Real Estate Trotters Mobile for T0 & T1 class over the same distance. Desdon Murruffy a daughter of the Smooth Fella mare Spellmaker was driven forward from gate six to cross the leader Bazzas Art (Art Major) inside him and travelled beautifully throughout, safely holding a margin to the wire in defeating Bazzas Art by 1.9 metres in a rate of 1-58.3, with Doey Doeback third after following the pair. Super Zeck from the Beach Towel mare Me Dolli Kit a winner of 11 races, began safely from outside the front row, with Murphy immediately sending him forward to park outside the pacemaker Ballan Road (gate three). Applying plenty of pressure to the leader approaching the home turn, Super Zeck unplaced in 12 previous outings outstayed his rivals to record a half head victory over Tribal Fella which trailed the leader gaining a late split in a rate of 2-03.4, with Ballan Road fighting on strongly to finish third 1.2 metres away.
3 wins from 4 outings
■ Great Western trainer Michelle Manning's tough Elsu/Whatsonyamind 5-Y-O gelding Pacquiao adapted to claiming company by winning the Tradelink Ballarat Claiming Pace over 1710 metres in 1-56.4 and in doing so made it three wins from his past four outings. Driven by Matt Craven, Pacquiao (claiming price $7000) raced in the open throughout from gate five, before outstaying the pacemaker Highview Spirit to score by 4.3 metres. All Honour (four wide home turn) came from last to finish third.
Mother Nature pounces
■ Bannockburn (Geelong) trainer Geoff Webster has Kiwi bred 6-Y-0 Sierra Kosmos/ Roydon Action gelding Action Kosmos racing in peak form and was rewarded by taking the National Tiles Trotters Handicap for T2 or better class over 2200 metres at Ballarat, bringing up his third victory in 32 outings. Driven by the stable's Emmett Brosnan, Action Kosmos after starting from outside the front row was sent forward shortly after the start to cross Mother Nature which pounced on the lead from barrier two as the tapes released. Travelling boldly, Action Kosmos defied all challengers to register a 3-metre victory in an easy 2-05.1 from the ever reliable Happy Hombre which raced in the open, with Rostevarren (four back the markers last lap) flashing home late to finish third just in advance of Mother Nature which was held up all the way to the wire.
Wide on final circuit
■ At Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday, Hamilton part-owner/trainer David Lewis's quality 6-Y-O Bettors Delight/Frosty Mattina gelding resumed from a short break with a brilliant near last to first performance to take out the tab.com.au Pace for M2 to M4 class over 2240 metres. Driven by Matt Craven, Abettorpunt starting from the extreme draw settled at the tail of the field, with the roughie Pinevale Willpower leading from gate four. Although wide in the final circuit, Abettorpunt raced away on straightening to record a 7-metre victory in advance of Saint Flash and Victors Delight in a mile rate of 1-57.9. It was Abettorpunt's 19th victory in 45 outings. - Len Baker
REMARKABLE STRIKE RATE
■ Terang trainer Marg Lee continued her remarkable strike rate, when first starter Keayang Active greeted the judge in the Bayswater Jayco 3-Y-0 Pace over 2100 metres at Charlton in Central Victoria on Monday September 25, returning a mile rate of 2-02. Driven by nephew Glen Craven who has only just returned to the sulky after having a knee attended to, Keayang Active a well supported gelded son of Art Major and the Fake Left mare Delta Dream began speedily from the pole and despite a serious challenge as the mobile pulled away by Jumbo Asakei (gate six), easily retained the inside running. Travelling boldly under a tight rein, Keayang Active bounded away on the final bend to record an untouched 5.1 metre victory in advance of In The Trenches (one/two - three wide last lap), with Jumbo Asakei which had dropped down to trail the winner after the early burn a further 1.9 metres away in third place. The heavily backed Ellen Tormey trained and driven favourite Done And Dusted also on debut, dropped out after moving to face the open midrace.
Welcome
■ Popular Moonlight (Maryborough) trainer John Douglas made a welcome return to the winners stall when lightly raced 8-Y-0 Wind Cries Maori/Lopsided gelding Right Side Up scored in the Charlton and District Community Bank Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2100 metres. Making his 30th appearance at the races, Right Side Up with Bendigo's Chris Svanosio in the cart, led throughout in accounting for a death-seating Sans Frontiere which appeared to have him covered on the home turn, with the 40 metre equal backmarker Allawart Ugo (one/one) third. The mile rate a pedestrian 209.5. John Douglas was one of Victoria's top junior reinsmen in the Showgrounds and early Moonee Valley era when attached to John Harland's famous Manfred stable at Flemington.

Mobile for T0 class over 1690 metres at Shepparton on Tuesday September 24, making amends for a most unlucky second to Stunning Jasper at Bendigo some 10 days earlier after losing the race on protest. Driven by Daryl Douglas, Justamirel despite starting from the extreme draw over the short trip settled three back in the moving line, before being sent forward three wide to assume control racing for the bell. Travelling sweetly for the rest of the journey, Justamirel safely defied all challengers in accounting for Stunning Jasper which trailed after leading out, with Thumbs Up Jerry (three back the markers last lap) third. The mile rate 2-01.6.
Honest
■ Kialla trainer Peter Hornsby's very honest and consistent 7-Y-O Earl/ Paris Metro mare The Pearl Of Paris continued her rise through the grades when successful in the Quest Shepparton Trotters Handicap for T1 or better class over 2190 metres at Shepparton. Driven once again by local Steve Boyington, The Pearl Of Paris coming from the 20 metre mark settling three back in the moving line, with the roughie Silver Memory leading from the front row. Easing three wide at the bell, The Pearl Of Paris sustained a long run to score by a half head over Ron Gilligan's Salute The Wind from last after making the final bend at least five wide, Silver Memory finished third only a head away. The mile rate 2-06.3.
Double
■ Glenn Douglas finished the night at Shepparton with a driving double after former Riverina 4-Y-O Armbro Operative/Key Attraction gelding Burra
Sullivan greeted the judge in the Empire Stallions Pace for C3 & C4 class over 2190 metres in 1-58.7. Given the run of the race from gate two trailing Our Warwick Lad which scorched away from outside the front row, Burra Sullivan used the sprint lane to perfection, drawing clear over the concluding stages to register a 4.9 metre victory, with the Echuca hope Bon Jovi third after following the pair.
Joyful win
■ Smiles of joy turned to sadness following the victory of 6-Y-O Aces N Sevens/Alesco gelding Cut For An Ace in the $20,000 University Foods Claiming Masters Final over 2240 metres at Melton. Trained at Bacchus Marsh by Alan Tubbs, Cut For An Ace driven by daughter Amy was sent forward from gate five to stroll past Thats Mister Ali inside him shortly after the start and proceeded to run his rivals ragged. Kicking away on straightening, Cut For An Ace (claiming price $25,000) scored by an untouched 12.7 metres in a brilliant mile rate of 1-55.7 over Smudge Bromac from near last and Kotare Roland (one/one) which trailed the heavily supported favourite Catch Your Breath. Cut For An Ace was claimed in the race and will do his future racing in the care of Geoff Webster at Bannockburn.

Sisters each take a win
■ Terang was the venue for Thursday trotting and Great Western based sisters Kerryn and Michelle Manning each recorded a victory on the night. Kerryn was successful with ex-Kiwi 7-Y-O Sundon/Cool Yankee mare Knapdale Girl in the Dick and Anne Box Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2190 metres and Michelle with 5-Y-O Armbro Operative/If Iseeyouinheaven mare Shanira in the Goodtime Lodge Pace for C0 class (mares) over 1680 metres. Knapdale Girl settled four back in the moving line off a 30 metre backmark, with Lovable Nick racing to the front from the 10 metre mark. Gaining a three wide trail home in the last lap following Mallee Trapper (one/one), Knapdale Girl although wide on the final bend, finished strongly to blouse Lovable Nick by 1.4 metres in a rate of 2-05.7, with Lochaber third after racing in the open. Shanira (gate five) which hadn't greeted the judge since March 2012 when a winner at Leeton, raced outside the heavily supported pacemaker What A Sheila (gate three) on debut, before dashing to the front on straightening to score 3.9 metres in 1-58.9 over Susie Badland (three wide last lap from last) and What A Sheila which held down third.
Ever-reliable gelding
■ Ararat trainer/driver Michael Bellman's ever reliable 5-Y-O Life Sign/Dreamworks gelding One Wise Man snared the Wallace Plumbtech Terang Pace for C1 class over 2180 metres in 202.9. Trapped four wide from gate five, Bellman persisted in sending One Wise Man forward, eventually taking the lead away from the pole marker Blissfull Bird entering the back straight on the first occasion. One there, the tempo of the race slowed down to a dawdle allowing him to gain a breather through the middle stages. Giving his rivals the slip on turning, One Wise Man safely defied all challengers to score from Blissful Bird and Majorflex (one/three - three wide solo last lap), chalking up his fourth victory in 32 outings.
Took all the spoils
■ Ross Creek (Ballarat) breeder/owner/trainer/ driver Stephen Clarke received all the spoils from the Dalvue Motel Pace for C1 class over 2180 metres at Terang, when 5-Y-0 Die Laughing/ Fleur Delacour mare Isabelle Delacour registered a big victory. Starting from inside the second line, Isabelle Delacour was given a sweet passage trailing the pole line leader and hot favourite Lombo Krista Bella, always appearing to be travelling easily. Not bothering to wait for the sprint lane to come into play, Clarke pushed Isabelle Delacour through a gap between Lombo Krista Bella and The Avoca Flyer on the home turn and she raced away to score by 11.6 metres in a rate of 2-01 from the leader, with The Avoca Flyer holding down third. It was Isabelle Delacour's second success in 38 outings. - Len Baker
