Forecasting Melbourne’s winter months Weather Porch Thoughts
● Livinia Nixon (Nine News Weather Presenter): “Winter in Melbourne means always being prepared for the elements - umbrella, scarf, boots, hot cup of coffee and occasionally sunglasses for those crisp clear, winter days. It can be bitterly cold, however there's always that old saying - There's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing!" @LNixon9
● Sarah Abo (SBS World News Reporter and Presenter): “It's the most stylish time of the year. Even when attending the footy: rugging up in chic jumpers, coats, boots, scarves and gloves. I also love waking up to a crisp, foggy morning. The city's laneways are a hub of warm alcoves, inviting us away from the chill and in for a hearty soup. Melbourne: cold but cosy.” @_SarahAbo
■ When we are first introduced to people or should we become stuck for conversation (awkward silence), and need to establish a quick common ground with a familiar topic, the weather is always a good ice-breaker. "It's unusually cold for this time of year. How are you coping with these cold snaps? Oh you're from Bendigo. I haven't been there for years. Pleased to meet you, I'm Tom." For those working within in the professional weather industry such as the Bureau of Meteorology with careers such as, Climatologists, Meteorologists, Weather Forecasters, Research Scientists, Oceanographers and Disaster Mitigation Managers (to name a few), striking up conversations about the weather can affect the lives of millions. Using terminology at their office water coolers such as; 'Ice Pellets', 'Hail', 'Steering winds', 'Onshore Breezes', 'Extratropical cyclones' and 'Snow flurries' can often translate into our homes to cause a sudden change in plans, rugging up (I need to buy a new winter coat), cutting fire-wood and communicating with statements such as, "Bugger, I left the washing on the line," "Mt Buller, here we come..Yippeeeee" and "I think we'll stay home and watch the footy on the box tonight. SPEEECIAAAAL!" According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Melburnians are expected to enjoy a 'cool to brisk' winter in 2014 (June-August) reaching average highs of 14°C and overnight lows of 7°C. In Melbourne, we know what that really translates to - "Hang on, keep the noise down, I need to hear what the weather is going to be tomorrow?" On their Weather Porches before presenting the forecast beneath the warm studio lights, I caught up with some of Melbourne's on-air television presenters asking them, "What does winter in Melbourne mean to you?"
● Jo Silvagni (7News Weather Presenter): “Winter in Melbourne means footy, and lots of dirty washing! With three sons playing club and school footy, there is always plenty. I love fashion in this season. When the cold weather hits, it's time to bring out the coats and boots, and Melbourne does fashion really well during winter.” @7NewsMelbourne
● Vanessa O'Hanlon (ABC News Breakfast Weather Presenter) Cold fronts blasting arctic winds down Flinders Lane, the sound of the infamous siren at the M.C.G and accessorising in boots, scarfs and jackets to enjoy a cosy lunch with friends enjoying the warmth and comfort of slow cooked food, red wine and a cosy fire. @VanessaOHanlon
