■ Melbourne TV fans are mourning the passing of Andy Griffith who died last week at the age of 86. Griffith, appearing as the sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry, in a North Carolina small town. Alongside him were characters including Barney Fife (Don Knotts), Opie (Ron Howard) and Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors). He also appeared as a country lawyer in Matlock (1986-1995). Griffith and Barbara Bray Edwards were married on August 22, 1949, and they adopted a son, Andrew Samuel Griffith, Jnr and a daughter, Dixie Nan.

■ British comedy figure Eric Sykes has died at the age 89. Although deaf for most of his life, and nearly blind in latter years, Sykes had an incredible ability to make people laugh. Sykes was one of the first writers for the Tony Hancock Show, He and Hattie Jacques played brother and sister in a long-running series, as well as comedy sketches in Not Only ... But Also with Dudley Moore and Peter Cook. He is survived by a wife, three daughters and a son.
■ Mrs Brown’s Boys (publicised as 9pm, Wednesday, Seven) actually started last week at 9.18pm. ● Matthew Newton ■ Melbourne-born actor Matthew Newton is due to stand trial in the US on July 25. His Australian lawyer Chris Murphy told a Sydney Court on Monday that Newton was in 24-7 care in a mental health facility. An Australian case resumes on August 6.
