RADIO AWARD NOMINEES ‘Prompter’ asks questions of media

● Jule Japhet Chiari in Prompter at Arts House, North Melbourne until August 18. Photo: Ponch Hawkes ■ The field of journalism has become a cultural flashpoint all its own in recent years. No longer an impartial data source or merely a historical archiving system, the news itself is now something that makes headlines. Flick through the channels and you can see bombastic debates about the very nature of journalism and the news—the issue of impartiality and unbiased reporting, the mouldering state of print journalism, the shaky status of news as a business model and whether accuracy has a place in today's Twitter-driven media landscape, where the one who gets there first is the one with the viewership. Prompter consists of 10 performers, five of whom interact with the other performers from their bedrooms via the internet, with “a storm of writing, design and technologybecome-force-of-nature.” The actors read from tele-prompters and handle shouldermounted cameras, which they regularly hand off to one another. The images filmed are then projected across various screens in the performance space. The effect is at first disorienting and even alienating. The performers are less actors and exist more as talking heads, while the audience is thrust into a situation of political unrest with no real information, despite being guided by a news reporter from the very beginning of the performance. A narrative slowly starts to weave around these seemingly disparate figures, each of whom is conflicted about the existential nature of their lives in telling stories and sharing information. So driven are they by this altruistic force that it begins to consume them, and as always their loved ones must deal with the heavy fallout. For some, this manifests itself in dark and disturbing ways. Prompter, a production by the Perth-based performance company Hydra Poesis and directed and co-written by Sam Fox, takes a studied and pragmatic look at the nature not just of journalism but of reporting in general. It asks questions about what it means to ask questions—of others, of ourselves, of our environment and the distancing nature that this can promote. Season: Until Sunday, August 18 Time: 7:30pm Tickets: Full $30, Concession $25, Student $20 Bookings: Online via www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/ artshouse/ or call 9322 3713 Venue: Arts House Meat Market , 5 Blackwood St., North Melbourne. - Review by Greg Moskovitch

Proximity wins award ■ As Australian Dance Theatre’s Melbourne season of Proximity approaches, leading performer Kimball Wong has receiced the Australian Dance Award for Most Oustanding Performance by a Male Dancer. After a ten year absense, Australian Dance Theatre returns to Arts Centre Melbourne next Thursday-Sunday, August 15-18. Announced last night from the Canberra Theatre Centre, the Australian Dance Awards recognise and honour professional Australian dance artists who have made an outstanding contribution to Australian dance. For his for in Proximity, Kimball Wong received the top award for demonstrating “extraordinary power, elevation and fluidity and for his accomplished, stunning dancing that often seems to defy science”. Combining art and technology, Proximity is a masterful demonstration in dance, videography and optical illusions. Throughout the performance, nine phenomenal dancers, including Wong, train video cameras on each other to capture, magnify and distort the choreography on large screens upstage. The result is a breathtaking, real-time video panorama that liberates the body from everyday understanding and physics. Formed in Adelaide in 1965, ADT is one of Australia’s foremost dance companies and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2015. Constantly in demand both in Australia and internationally, ADT is one of Australia's most active touring dance companies. In 2013 alone, ADT will have toured two simultaneous productions to over 25 cities across the globe. Under the artistic direction of Garry Stewart since 1999, the company has embarked on a distinctive artistic trajectory, often exploring collisions of arts and science, that has won the company numerous accolades and critical acclaim. Alongside Proximity, ADT’s technological oeuvre includes the spectacular Devolution, which was created in collaboration with French-Canadian roboticist Louis-Philippe Demers, and Held, which saw photographer Lois Greenfield onstage snapping real-time photographs of the performance. Greta Bradman’s farewell ■ Seventy years ago a Bradman was making his name internationally with a cricket bat. Fast forward to 2013 and another Bradman is about to make her name internationally with her voice. Soprano Greta Bradman is leaving Australia soon to take up a scholarship at the Wales International Academy of Voice as the 2013 winner of the Australian International Opera Award. She will be completing an MA in Advanced Vocal Studies at the Wales International Academy of Voice, under the tutelage of WIAV head Dennis O'Neill, his visiting colleagues from around the world, and with guidance from another antipodean soprano whose name will be familiar - Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Over the past few years, psychologist Greta has pursued her dream of being a professional classical singer with passion, and through her concerts and her CDs released by Sony Classics, she has become a much loved soprano to a wide range of listeners. Once Greta is based in Cardiff, with husband and two little boys accompanying her, she will no doubt attract much attention as an opera singer in England and Europe, so it could be a long time before Australia is home again to this talented young woman. To say goodbye to her Melbourne fans, Greta is singing a special 'Farewell For Now' concert called 'Beautiful Music with Greta Bradman', at St Michael's Church, corner of Collins Street and Russell Street Melbourne on Sunday (Aug. 18) at 2.30pm. Greta will be joined by associate artists Rhys Boak and Amir Farid at the organ and piano, and Laila Engle on flute. The concert includes beautiful music for voice, organ, piano, violin and flute, with opera arias, folk songs and art songs from composers including Mozart, Dvorak, Puccini, Wagner, and Strauss.

Movies, DVDs With Jim Sherlock and Aaron Rourke

What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs

● Veteran actor Ed Harris as the Captain of a 1960s Russian nuclear submarine that sets out on a secret mission that could ignite World War III, a tension filled thriller inspired by actual events that took place at the height of the Cold War. FILM: PHANTOM: Genre: Cold War/Thriller. Cast: Ed Harris, David Duchovny, William Fichtner. Year: 2013. Rating: TBC. Running Time: 98 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***1/2 Verdict: Enthralling 1960's Cold War adventure inspired by true events of the Captain of a Soviet submarine who holds the fate of the world in his hands when he is he is charged with leading a covert mission cloaked in mystery. What's true and what's not is also a bit of a mystery, but the always reliable Ed Harris and cast are in fine form, and direction and screenplay create a ripping yarn. A tense and thought provoking Cold War journey that will have you on the edge of your seat and leave you with plenty of food for thought. FILM: THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE: Genre: Comedy. Cast: Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, James Gandolfini. Year: 2013. Rating: M. Running Time: 100 Minutes. Release: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ** Verdict: When a street magician with violent stunts makes their show look stale, magicians since their school days Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton look to salvage on their act and their friendship. All too few funny moments in this comedy of two lifelong friends and double Las Vegas magical act don't make up for the painfully cringe inducing moments, which are plentiful. One saving grace is the delightful Alan Arkin as an old time magician but even his involvement can't completely save this poor and misguided effort, right to its totally implausible conclusion. FILM: THE COURT MARTIAL OF BILLY MITCHELL: Genre: Drama/War. Cast: Gary Cooper, Charles Bickford, Rod Steiger, Elizabeth Montgomery. Year: 1955. Rating: G. Running Time: 100 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **** Verdict: Thrilling dramatization from director Otto Preminger of legendary American general Billy Mitchell in the 1920's and his court martial for publically complaining about High Command's dismissal and neglect of the aerial fighting forces. Great script and direction, with standout performances by screen greats Gary Cooper and Rod Steiger in an early screen role. Some of the revelations revealed, and laughed at, during the court case are a absolutely staggering, most of which would actually eventuate nearly two decades later. FILM: THE HOST: Genre: Adventure/Science Fiction/Romance. Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, Max Irons. Year: 2013. Rating: M. Running Time: 125 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **1/2 Verdict: Another teenage romantic-science fiction- thriller from Stephenie Meyer, the author of The Twilight Saga, of an unseen alien enemy that threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories. However, they have met their match with Melanie, who can fight it, and will stop at nothing to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all against this threat to the human race. It's all there, but this is pretty much a flat, lifeless and yawn inducing rehash of a number of Sci-Fi thrillers, most notably the 1956 classic The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and that's definitely the one to go for, so spend your money and time on the original, or 1978 remake, instead.

Observer Showbiz REVIEW: THE WISDOM OF EVE ■ Peridot Theatre presents The Wisdom Of Eve until August 24 at 8pm, with a 2.15pm matinee on August 17 and 4pm matinee on August 18, at the Unicorn Theatre, Lechte Rd, Mount Waverley. Based on Mary Orr’s 1946 Cosmopolitan magazine short story The Wisdom Of Eve, the play was adapted into the 1950 movie titled All About Eve. Under Annette De Boer’s expert direction, the story reveals life in the 1950s New York theatre world, where ingénue Eve Harrington’s determination to achieve stardom includes using deceit and manipulation, with ruthless disregard to others. The great cast includes Amy Jenkins, who beautifully conveys the two sides of Eve’s personality, and Julie Arnold who is outstanding as legendary actress Margo Crane, capturing her flamboyance, toughness and vulnerability. Michael Knowles also delivers a strong performance as Margot’s husband Clement. Denise Wellington is gently appealing as Karen Roberts, credible performances are enjoyed from Stephen Barber (playwright, Lloyd Roberts) and Peter Fowler (Harvey). and also Justin Klvac (Bert Hinkle), Garry Rens (‘Tally-Ho’ Thompson), Kiersten Page (Vera Franklin) and Janet Withers as Margo’s dresser, Leila. Helen McIntosh’s first-class set design is complimented by Jason Bovaird and Deryk Hartwick’s effective lighting design and the stylish, colourful costumes. Bravo to the backstage crew for quick, well-organised set changes. Occasional grasping for words by actors on opening night will no doubt disappear as the season progresses. As usual, Peridot’s front-of-house operation is presented with elegant flair. However, the comfortable auditorium is chilly when overhead fans are operating. Peridot’s production gives theatregoers the opportunity to enjoy a well-presented and enjoyable interpretation of this classic play. Tickets: $23/$20. Bookings: 1300 138 645 or email peridotboxoffice@yahoo.com.au

Cathy Lord and Angie Matthews (front) rehearse for the BATS Theatre Company’s production of Stepping Out, being presented from August 30 to September 8 in Cranbourne. Photo: Chantelle Riordan. ■ Stepping Out will be presented by BATS Theatre Company at the Cranbourne Community Theatre, Brunt Street, Cranbourne on August 30, 31, September 5, 6 at 8.00pm and September 8 at 2.00pm Directed by Melanie Bouette, the play tells the story of eight individuals from disparate backgrounds and with different motivations, who attend the same weekly tap dancing class in a dingy Melbourne Scout Hall. Despite the students initially treating the classes as social occasions and showing little coordination, they later develop a level of skill and cohesiveness. The dance routines are the background for the focus of the play, which is the relationship and interaction between different people. Director Melanie Bouette says she feels lucky to have front row seats to this wonderful play at every rehearsal. “We have such a talented group here, on and off the stage,” she says. Choreographer Susan Collier has also enjoyed working with the enthusiastic cast, saying “It is a joy to see their tapping really develop.” Tickets: $20 full price, $18 concession. ● Jason Dawes (Andy), Joan Krutli (Miss Church) in Down Came A Jumbuck, one of three short plays being presented by the Adelphi Players from September 3 – 8 at Labassa in Caulfield. Photo: Michael Mace ■ The Adelphi Players are staging Memories, a program of three short plays, as part of their celebrations for achieving 50 years of continuous productions, from September 3 – 8 at historic Labassa in Caulfield. All three plays return by popular demand and comprise Bernard Shaw’s classic comedy Village Wooing, where a travel writer meets a chatty phone operator with a mission to marry him. In Tad Mosel’s Impromptu, audiences are asked “How much truth and how much illusion does a person need to live a balance life?” Finally, Ian Austin concludes the program with his hilarious satire on how “that song” (Waltzing Matilda) may have been written in Down Came a Jumbuck. Directed by Michael Mace, performances will be presented at the National Trust mansion Labassa, 2 Manor Grove, Caulfield North. Opening on September 3, evening performances commence at 8.00pm, while matinees on Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8, commence at 2.00pm. Observer Victorian Sport

SPRING IS IN THE AIR ■ It certainly is with the release of the nominations for some of the feature events for the spring. The action kicks off with the running of the Caulfield Guineas on October 12th, with the country's top three-year-olds battling it out for the $1 million on offer. The race over 1600 metres is one of the exciting features of the spring with some great threeyear-olds going to be champions of the Turf. Last year we saw a battle royal between two of the best three- year olds seen on the racetrack. the champion Sydney colt, Pierro, took on the best of our youngsters and was sent out a short priced favorite after his impeccable record in Sydney having won 6 Group Ones. But he had his colors lowered by Victoria's top young galloper, All Too Hard, who proved too strong over the 1600 metres, although Pierro missed the "kick" slightly and was forced wide. Both now are at stud after their owners decided they had done enough and would produce good stock in the coming years. Pierro was by leading sire. Lohnro, and All Too Hard, by Casino Prince. Among some of the top three-year olds entered this year is the very smart New Zealander, Cauthen, who was narrowly beaten at Moonee Valley by Clevadude, after slightly missing the start and then checked near the school. Clevadude has been nominated along with the smart Sydney colt, Charlie Boy, who had no luck in his runs in the two-year-old events in Sydney. Others that stand out are; Eurozone, from the Bart Cummings camp, Fast'n' Rocking, prepared by David Hayes a Blue Diamond placegetter, and Happy Meteor from the strong Hawkes yard. Another that was very impressive in winning at Caulfield, is Monkstone, in the powerful camp of Peter Moody at Caulfield. At his first start he was caught wide and came from a long way back to run a good second then turned up trumps at Caulfield at his next start, with a strong win. He is by top sire, Fastnet Rock, and was bought for $1 million at the Easter Yearling Sales. Another that has made racegoers sit up and take notice is the two-year-old of Tony Vasil's, Prince Harada, a brilliant winner at his first start at Swan Hill, then after missing the start at Moonee Valley and tailed off last, blitzed them in the run home to win running away. Prince Harada is by boom sire Haradasun who was placed third in a Cox Plate and won Overseas. Tony has a knack of placing his well bred types starting them off at Swan Hill, like Elvstroem, who won a Victoria Derby, a Caulfield Cup, fourth in a Melbourne Cup and a big winner in Asia. Haradasun started off the same way. Haradasun's owner, Frank Tagg was telling me how they named him. He is buy Japanese sire Fuchiachi Pegasus, meaning Flying horse, from his great mare, Circles Of Gold, a prolific producer of top racehorses. He wanted to name the colt Fighting Harada, after the Japanese Boxing Champion, who lost the World Bantamweight Boxing Title to our Lionel Rose in 1968. Frank likes to name his progeny after Olympic Champion's, hence, Fighting Harada and Elvstroem, a Champion yachtsman. Tony Vasil has a big opinion of Prince Harada, even told me at Flemington recently he was good enough top win the Cox Plate. He has often been quoted as saying he is the best horse he has trained, and ridden. Tony rides all his top notchers in track work and feels this is the one that will give him not only his first Guineas win, but the Cox Plate too. Another of Tony's that he's entered for the Guineas is the consistent, The Bowler, who has shown a bit in his three starts so far. He is owned by a bunch of characters from the Port Melbourne Bowling Club, hence the name. I can tell you they like a drink, I found that out when the colt bolted in at Pakenham, and I was looking after the presentation and the bar after, enough said. Another of Tony's nominated, is, Under The Louvre, who had looked good until well beaten at Flemington, but on that day the track after shock

ing weather went from a dead 4 to a Slow 7 and then a Heavy 8 in the space of four races. It would pay to forget that run. Another that is racing well is the Peter Moody trained Weinholt, a good third behind two good youngsters, Clevadude and Cauthen at the Valley.

The young jockey, a mother of a child, was very well thought of and recently was equal top rider fro the past season in Darwin. The Cup meeting at Darwin was cancelled before the Cup was run and the Club donated the finds to her family for the up care of her young child and her future. Around $ 200,000 was donated with another $100,000 added by sponsors, now jockeys and the Jockey's Association has come to the fore. Champion jockey, Glen Boss, was very saddened by the incident and gave the money from his percentage winning ride at Sandown and followed that up, with anything he earned later. Well known owner, Phil Sly, himself battling cancer, generously donated his stake winnings from his horse Digitalism winning at Sandown. While leading Sydney jockey Jimmy Cassidy has opened up a Face Book account with funds raised, to be placed into a Trust for her child. On top of this TABCORP, and the Victorian Racing Industry donated all profits from the first race at Flemington last Saturday to the fund. - Ted Ryan

Sulky Snippets ■ Orrvale (Goulburn Valley) trainer Steven Duffy also used the services of Greg Sugars to capture the Echuca Moama Storage 2-Y-0 Pace over 1755 metres at Echuca with Safari/ Delldale gelding Hooper Road which was making his second appearance at the races. Settling at the tail of the field after starting from the extreme draw, Hooper Road gained a lovely three wide trail home in the last lap following the well supported Sutter Man which quickly moved outside the leader Macworthy on debut approaching the home turn. Joining Sutter Man on turning, Hooper Road wasn't knocked around in winning by a neck, with Macworthy holding down third. The mile rate 2-01.2. ■ The Stawell Harness Racing Club paid tribute to those who have assisted the club over the years when a seven event card was held at Laidlaw Park on Wednesday August 7 in very wet conditions. Former Ararat based trainer Aaron Brown now domiciled in South Australia, made a successful trip home when Presidential Ball/Lombo San Jan gelding Whata Player greeted the judge in the Reginald Cooper Life Member 2-Y-0 Pace over 1790 metres.

To Tabcorp Park ■ All roads will lead to Tabcorp Park Melton on Sunday afternoon for the culmination of the Australasian Breeders Crown Series featuring the best two, three and four year old pacers and trotters presently around - admission is free.

Serious challenge ■ Echuca on the Campaspe River close to the Victorian/NSW border, held a neat eight event card on Tuesday August 6, with border hoppers Kenmor Albertina and Victoria May both saluting the judge. Kenmor Albertina a 4-Y-0 gelded son of Artiscape and Sky Hy trained at Narrandera by David Kennedy was successful in the Carmel Ryan Memorial Pace for C1 class over the sprint trip of 1755 metres. Driven by Shepparton's Nathan Jack, Kenmor Albertina settled three back in the moving line from gate two on the second line, with The Numbers Man leading from gate three. Despite being pushed wide in the final circuit by Earls Reign (one/one) inside him, Kenmore Albertina proved too strong over the concluding stages for Earls Reign in a rate of 2-00 even, scoring by 1.9 metres, with Hezupnabout (three back the markers) using the sprint lane for third. Four year old Holmes Hanover/Ides Of May mare Victoria May also trained at Narrandera by Shaun Snudden snared the Christies Welding Pace for C4 & C5 class over 2160 metres in a mile rate of 2-00.1. Taking a concession for stable "apprentice" Paul Diebert, Victoria May came out running from gate two, safely holding out Hellovanite (gate four) which issued a serious challenge. Even though she was inclined to over race after being revved up early, Victoria May kicked clear on straightening to record a 5.9 metre victory in advance of the Elmore mare Madam Altissimo which trailed using the sprint lane to no avail, with Donoson first up for 12 months running home late from near last for third.

Hat-trick of wins ■ Redan (Ballarat) trainer/driver Michael Stanley may have something special in ex-Kiwi 3-Y-0 Presidential Ball/Pamela Pamela gelding Hilltop Hustler who brought up a hat-trick of wins by taking the Life Members Pace Final for C1 class over 1780 metres at the Stawell fixture. Settling three back in the moving line with the tearaway leader The Kingston Flyer making every post a winner, Stanley wasted no time in sending Hilltop Rustler forward to face the breeze at the bell. Doing a lot of chasing, Hilltop Raider dropped in for a short breather approaching the home turn. When asked for a super effort on straightening, Hilltop Hustler responded in grand style to record a four metre victory in 1-58.2 over the leader, with Roman Abbey a further 26 metres away in third place.

51st appearance ■ Ultra consistent P Forty Seven/Just Moonstrike 4Y-0 gelding Arr En Special notched up his 4th victory for the season in the Leslie McLeod Life Member Pace for C0 class over 1780 metres at Stawell. Trained at Allendale (Mount Gambier) by David Kemp and driven by David Murphy, Arr En Special was trapped four wide from outside the front row running into the first bend, before angling into the one/ one spot. Easing three wide at the bell, Arr En Special raced three wide uncovered for the rest of the journey, exploding to the front approaching the home turn. Although tackled by Peters Ace (four wide last lap from last) on straightening, Arr En Special held a margin to the wire, registering a 4.9 metre margin in a rate of 2-02.1. Kurraca Knight (one/one last lap) finished third. Arr En Special usually races at most Western District meetings and was making his 51st appearance at the races (19 this season).

MICK BELLMAN’S DRIVE OF DAY

■ Ararat based trainer/ driver Michael Bellman having his best season ever, produced the ‘drive of the day’ to land the Charlton $10 Club Membership Pace for C1 class over 2100 metres at Charlton in Central Victoria on Monday August 5 with 4-Y-0 Die Laughing/Lily Princess mare Misschinoise. Restrained from outside the front row to settle at the tail of the field with Neevers leading from gate two, Misschinoise made ground to possie tightly held four back along the markers, needing lots of luck to figure in the finish. Easing away from the inside to be three back in the moving line in the final circuit, Misschinoise was extricated to be very wide on straightening, before releasing an electrifying burst of speed to swamp her rivals over the concluding stages and register a 2.9 metre victory in a rate of 2-00.7 from Blissful Hart along the sprint lane off the back of the leader, with Boom Boom Hall (one/ one - three wide home turn) third.

Broke status ■ Beautifully bred Dream Vacation/Why Worry filly I Dreamt It broke her maiden status at start number five by taking the Trots Card 3-Y-0 Trotters Handicap over 2100 metres at Charlton. Trainer at Tatura by David Abrahams who has made several experimental trips to the USA over the years, I Dreamt It driven by Daryl Douglas led virtually throughout from barrier three to score from the fast finishing Jay Gee (three back the markers) and Our Punt which led out before taking a trail on the winner. The mile rate 2-05.9.

Smooth run ■ The Charlton & District Community Bank Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2100 metres went the way of Great Western trainer/ driver Kerryn Manning's well performed exKiwi 6-Y-0 Sundon/ Cool Yankee mare Knapdale Girl much to the delight of high profile owners Merv and Meg Butterworth. Sent forward from a 20 metre handicap after a smooth beginning to assume control, Knapdale Girl toyed with her rivals, scoring by an untouched 9.7 metres over Miss Eliza who was always handy from a 30-metre equal backmark shared with the third placegetter Balti-

Very smart

Honest race ■ Parwan duo Craig Demmler (trainer) and Jodi Quinlan (driver) captured the Second Repechage with speedy Dream Vacation/Adelas Dash colt Glenferrie Dreamer, leading throughout from gate four to easily account for Lord Liam (one/one) by 2.3 metres in a rate of 2-04.1, with Fiftyshadesofbrown running her usual honest race for third after following the winner from the pole.

Quite wet ■ Meltonian's were prominent at a very wet Kilmore fixture on Wednesday August 7, winning three of the eight events on the program. Merv Williamson started the ball rolling when Art Major/Bellakey gelding Major Lord scored in the Cheeky Monkey 3Y-0 Pace for Colts & Geldings over 1690 metres. The mile rate 2-02.8.

Harness Review ■ Listen to Len Baker on Harness Review, 8pm-10pm Mondays, on 97.9 FM, streamed in 979fm.com.au

Trained and driven by Rod, Cenosilocophobia defied all challengers on turning to record a head victory in 2-01.2 over a death-seating Quick Jet and Open Heart (three wide last lap) from mid-field.

Fifth victory for season ■ Danny Mullen's very much in-form Artiscape/ Eileen Monica 7-Y-0 gelding Artoc continues to make his way through the grades, chalking up his 5th victory for the season (14 overall) by taking Classic & Historic Motor Bike Expo Pace for C3 & C4 class over 2180 metres. Taking a concession for Rhys Nicholson, Artoc from gate five was sent forward to assume control in the straight on the first occasion and despite being hard driven approaching the final bend, safely held his rivals at bay to score by 1.8 metres in a rate of 202 over Conflict Of Interest which trailed after crossing the early leader Bronze Destiny who finished third.

Top night for locals ■ The Melton/Bacchus Marsh area had a great night at Geelong on Thursday, Jodi Quinlan taking the Claiming Pace with Our Horizon, Sur Hunter the 2Y-0 Pace with Annas Innocent, JoanneMangion the Vicbred Trotters Mobile with Tawonga South and Allan McDonough the C1 class event with Elle Jasper. FOOTY’S OWN ‘X-FACTOR’

■ I have ve been looking for a report I wrote ‘On What It Takes To Make A Top Umpire’ which I penned as a handout sheet after talking to the Sydney AFL Senior Umpires Group some years back who were coached by the tireless David Yole. So far I haven’t found it but I came across my editorial piece (May 18, 2012). With so much ‘speak’ I thought it may be appropriate to reprint it as it confirms how wrong our mainstream media can be in their comments and the reason they subscribe to their own philosophy “yesterday’s newspaper is today’s wrap around for a hot serve of fish and chips” ★ In today’s ‘speak’ much credence is given to The X Factor. Three AFL giants in my view have this ‘mysterious, magical’ X Factor quality: ■ Andrew D, ■ ‘DD, Dynamo Dave’Matthews GWS CEO ■ and its coach Sheeds. (GWS Giants, the team experts said would not win a game this season has defeated GCSuns in NAB Cup and Round 7 - twice!) X Factor? After Round 6 the AFL was knocked mercilessly by the media as a “lopsided competition with only six of the 18 clubs a real chance”. (Crows, Carlton, Magpies, WCE, Essendon and Swans), the next five clubs fighting to make the last two places for the Final 8, (Geelong, Hawthorn, St Kilda, Fremantle and North Melbourne), two clubs (Richmond and Bulldogs) needing a miracle turn-a-round, and five clubs (Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Melbourne, GWS and GCSuns) as ‘no contest, percentage builders’ dragging down crowds and TV ratings. Round 7 results and the same experts are predicting this season is the most even since 1997 when 14 of the 18 teams could make the finals. In one week 13 clubs can now make the final 8! And the ‘no-hopers’ Giants win was the best received. (The Final 8 read: Haw, Adel, Swans, Coll, WCE, Geel, Freo, North Melb – St Kil, Carl, Ess, Rich, W. Bull, didn’t make the Final 8!) X Factor? If you watched the Bombers 61 points thrashing of leaders WCE (Rd.7 2012 at Etihad) you witnessed the Sheedy legacy of ‘jacket/scarf’ waving by both the Dons and Eagles fans, now a fun tradition of AFL folklore entertainment. X Factor? In two weeks time, Rd 9 Sheedy’s Giants play its first home-ground game at Skoda Stadium. Against Essendon! A jubilant frenzy of 25,000 fun-filled jacket-waving fans. The Sheedy Legacy promised entertainment at the boutique Skoda Stadium no matter the winner. And the winner Is? The AFL industry, Aussie Football and the 18 clubs. X Factor? The AFL was also attacked on the rules, “outlawing changes on the run for sliding feet first or kneeing tackles”, charity frees for staging around the neck, head-high tackles, the TV goal decisions, time-wasting for umpires taking too long to break-up the rugby style brawling scrums. Indeed the only thing going for the

Harry Beitzel www.squidoo.com/harrybeitzel AFL was the odd exciting cliff-hanger finishes to big games. What a ‘whirlwind twister’ blew in from nowhere in Round 7. Odds-on Cats $1.65, Swans $1.90, GCSuns $1.35, North M $1.35, and the ‘creme de la creme’ result Saints defeating Carlton $1.30, all ‘bit the dust’. Essendon $1.85 was the exception destroying WCE. And now the experts predict a ‘dog’ fight to the finish with Richmond and W Bulldogs joining the ‘good chances group’. X Factor? Is the X Factor tied into the ‘oldfashioned good luck’ theory? Did it have anything to do with the turn-around? Experience tells me ‘successful people’ seem to enjoy ‘good luck’ at the most appropriate time. My definition was part of my ‘Up on Cloud Nine’talk for Tom Hafey’s Tigers on the eve of the 1967 Grand Final against Geelong. I was asked by the canny John Northey what part ‘Good Luck’ plays in football? My response: “I believe ‘good luck’ is the point where ability, attitude and hard-work meet on and off the field. We make our own luck”. It’s still my philosophy. And my three nominated AFL X Factor gents plus Sydney Swans Success Story confirm my theory. Swans are celebrating 30 Long, lonely, tough, survival years to establish themselves and AFL in NSW. I f in 1982 they hadn’t made the move north today there would be: No Swans-No GWS. Well done! Oh Sheeds you love theme names for important and traditional clashes. I still like ‘Battle of The Bridges’ for the local NSW derby Swans v Giants. Because of your involvement with Essendon and GWS Giants which may grow into the biggest rivalry of all I put forward two “naming themes”. Try ‘The Wave Craze Cup’ or ‘Air-Wave Giants Bomber Bash’ which I’m informed was a specially built aircraft for bombing raids by the US during WWII. You started the ‘wave-craze’. You will never be forgotten. This ‘wavecraze’ can be your ‘signature contribution’ to our game. It’s your baby. You’re smart so what’s your naming theme’ for your Round 9 match? Try The X Factor.

spot who play GCSuns (H), Freo (A), Carlton (H). WCE play Geelong (H), Collingwood (MCG), Adelaide (H); and Carlton play Richmond (MCG), Essendon (MCG), Port Adelaide (A). The form experts are touting both Hawthorn and Geelong are not playing at their best. So what’s your Final 8? HB: Hawthorn 72pts, Freo 70pts, Geelong 64, Sydney 62, Richmond 60, Collingwood 60, Essendon 56, Port A 52. A good time to show how the 1st week Finals are played out: Team 1 v 4, 2 v 3, 5 v 8, 6 v 7. (HB’s 1st week: Hawthorn v Sydney (MCG), Freo v Geelong (WA), Richmond v Port Adel, Collingwood v Essendon) Finishing in the Top 4 gives those teams a double chance as the winners in the first week enjoy a break the next week while the losers play the winners of the games 5 to 8. The season is over for the losers of teams 5 to 8. The 2nd week Finals involve the two losers of teams 1 to 4 v the winners of teams 5 to 8 – I’ll explain finals teams weeks 3 and 4 later.

Footy backs cancer fight And now to Round 20, 2013 ■ And that was last year and we move onto Round 20, 2013! There is Excitement Galore ahead for the AFL fanatics after the weekend’s results. Essendon and Sydney have cornered themselves and their positions in the Final 8 make-up. Is it deja vu for the Bombers as they crashed to their third consecutive loss and from second to seventh? They now face North Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond in the final three home and away games. They lost the last seven in 2012 and missed the eight but are two wins (52 points) better placed this year to hold on. It will need miracle wins by big margins in all the last three games for challengers Carlton and WCE both on 36 points to displace them in the Final 8 to reach 52 points. The Top 4 could certainly change. Hawthorn first on 64 pts meet Collingwood (MCG), North Melb (E), Sydney (A). Geelong 2nd 60pts v WCE (A), Sydney (H) Brisbane (H). Sydney 3rd 58pts faces two big games – it should defeat St Kilda next Sunday to go to 62 points then Geelong (A) and Hawthorn (H). They will be challenged by Freo 4th 58pts who meet Melbourne (A), Port Adelaide (H) and St Kilda (A) and finish with 70 points to claim 3rd or better ladder position. If Collingwood and Richmond 52pts win their last three they will be on 64 pts. Richmond play Carlton (MCG), GWS (A), Essendon (MCG); Collingwood play Haw, WCE, North Melb all at the MCG. Carlton and WCE, 36pts are the only two with an outside chance to topple Port Adelaide 44pts from 8th

■ The AFL and the Carlton Football Club have thrown their collective support behind national bowel cancer awareness charity, The Jodi Lee Foundation, to increase awareness of Australia’s second most deadly cancer and save lives. The #iknowsome1 campaign launched at Saturday’s Round 20 match between Carlton and the Western Bulldogs - invites Australians to join AFL greats, such as Marc Murphy, Dermott Brereton and Andrew McKay to share their connection with bowel cancer. Founder and CEO of The Jodi Lee Foundation, Nick Lee, said bowel cancer is significantly more common than people realise, with an estimated 17,000 Australians diagnosed this year alone – the equivalent of a third of Etihad Stadium at capacity. “The #iknowsome1 campaign will help build greater awareness of bowel cancer and the importance of early detection using a simple at-home bowel screening test every year or two,” Mr Lee said. “Many people don’t realise that bowel cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Australia after lung cancer and it’s vital that we keep it on our health watch list, like other types of Cancer.” AFL Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Gillon McLachlan, said the AFL was proud to support the Foundation. “The numbers related to bowel cancer are a stark reminder of just how many people in the community are affected by this disease and why we need to drive awareness and promote early detection through screening,” Mr McLachlan said. “It’s great to see the Carlton Football Club support such an important initiative through their Round 20 match and we’d urge as many Blues and Bulldogs fans to pledge their support for campaign at Saturday’s match.” Carlton Football Club President Stephen Kernahan urged supporters to get involved and take action. “The Carlton FC encourages its members and supporters to adopt an

active lifestyle and take care of their health,” Kernahan said. “Bowel cancer is a deadly disease but one that can be prevented or successfully treated with early detection. Get behind the campaign at our round 20 game against the Bulldogs.” The Foundation encourages those who have been directly affected by bowel cancer, or know someone who has, to join AFL greats and support the campaign via www.iknowsome1. com.au simply by posting their own photo and/or story on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #iknowsome1. The most creative photo, judged by The Jodi Lee Foundation after Carlton’s Round 20 match, will win an iPad mini valued at $500. In addition to the #iknowsome1 campaign, The Jodi Lee Foundation has also developed a number of national programs to increase bowel cancer awareness, including its Corporate Bowel Screening Program, the annual Little Black Dress Classic – a long distance cycling event – and Know Your Risk website, which helps people self–assess their bowel cancer risk based on family history. Coaches, umps get together

■ AFL General Manager Football Operations Mark Evans said he would bring together senior coaches and the senior AFL umpires list early in the pre-season to better assist the way in which umpires and clubs prepare for an upcoming season around the operation of the Laws of the Game. Mr Evans said the AFL would bring together coaches and umpires in November with the aim to deliver greater clarity and consistency around key interpretations of the Laws from the perspective of all major parties, to fast track the understanding for the season ahead. Mr Evans outlined the proposal to club CEOs at their meeting at Creswick in regional Victoria on August 7 and wrote to all club football departments next day . The AFL will now work with the AFL umpiring dept and club football departments to put the session in place. "The CEOs were briefed about plans to discuss some of the more contentious Laws of the Game and we will be inviting senior coaches to participate in discussions involving some Laws Committee members and umpires.
