Nine’s Big Brother begins ■ Was ‘Cyclops’ alone in thinking that Sonia Kruger looked out of her depth when Nine aired its first episode of Big Brother this week? Monday night’s launch episode attracted more than 1.6 million viewers nationally, which should have pleased the network. Nine won the night with a 38 per cent percentage share helped with the Underbelly Badness debut, and a repeat of the Closing Ceremony from the London Games. (TheClosing Ceremony presentation attracted much criticism, with co-host Eddie McGuire talking over some of the British music acts.) Big Brother is a massive marketing project. The DreamWorld site in Queensland is heavily promoted, as is the Big Brother website, and the social media connections on Twitter and Facebook.

The program looks at Heinrich Himmler’s project to create a socalled Master Race of blondehaired blue-eyed children. Some 67 years ago after the end of World War II, the program looks at what became of the children who were born and stolen to become to new master race.

Ronn quits B&B

Award for sound

■ Ronn Moss has quit his tole in The Bold and The Beautiful, citing salary issues. Production company Bell Phillip Television confirmed the exit. “Ronn has spent an amazing 25 years with B&B,”said a spokesman for Bell Phillip. “We will always consider him family, and we wish him only the best in all of his future endeavours.” Moss has played fashion magnate Ridge Forrester since 1987 inception. His last episode will air in the US in September.

■ Internationally acclaimed sound researcher, composer and sound artist,Dr Ros brandt from the University of Melbourne, was on Monday night awarded the 2012 National Film and Sound Archive Cochrane Smith Award for Sound Heritage, at Melbourne Town Hall. Dr Bandt is the director of the Australian Sound Design Project, a new nationwide website, database and research facility dedicated to the study of sound design in public space. She has been the recipient of many international awards.

● André Rieu Live In Maastricht: A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be televised at 1pm this Friday (August 17) on SBS One. This includes South African soloists, soprano Kimmy Skota from Cape Town, the Bloemfontein Children’s Choir, and the kids from the Hout Bay Music Project.
