Veterans of ANZAC Cove â– 2015 marks the 100th Anniversary of the arrival in Turkey of more than 100,000 Australian and New Zealand troops for the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War. The multi-national Alliance between Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and its empire has had significant impact on every generation since 1915, in ways as numerous as the individual families whose loved ones were directly or indirectly involved in the battle. In successive years following the Gallipoli landing, ANZAC Day has expanded to reflect on the efforts and sacrifice of Australian armed forces in all battles since that fateful day. Each year, the commitment grows among military and civil members of the Australasian region, to honour the Australian and New Zealand Corps (ANZAC) soldiers who served and fell at the disastrous landing at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915. In 2014, this time of year continues to invoke memories and emotions from the terrible tragedy of more than 11,000 lives lost in the Gallipoli assault in a location now known as ANZAC Cove, on the south-west coast of Turkey. The Australian Government, through the Department of Veterans' Affairs, is committed to continuing the commemorations of wartime history, especially throughout the ANZAC Centenary period 2014-2018. ANZAC Day ceremonies, including the Australian Memorial Service at Lone Pine and the New Zealand Memorial Service at Chunuk Bair, are conducted internationally on and around April 25, attended by thousands of people from diverse cultural backgrounds, across all walks of life. Commemorated with the traditional haunting bugle-call and words of honour by senior military personnel, the Dawn Service at the ANZAC Commemorative Site in ANZAC Cove is an especially treasured privilege where up to 10,000 people pay tribute to the courage and patriotic spirit of our soldiers. In as many ways as there are individuals forever impacted by the battle of Gallipoli, the ANZAC spirit continues to grow stronger with the passing of each year. Before making his way to Turkey, I connected with Tim Evans, Assistant Secretary of Commemorations, who shared his insight into the ANZAC Cove journey, on behalf of the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
Gallipoli Porch Thoughts
For anyone like me who hasn't made the annual journey toANZAC Cove, is there any special preparation to undertake before attending? Australians planning to attend ANZAC Day commemorations at Gallipoli are encouraged to come prepared. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Information on how to prepare for the commemorations is available on the DVA website including a visitor information video on what to expect. In past years, some fortunate young students have been invited to participate in formal ceremonies which pay tribute to our fallen soldiers. What ongoing contribution do you think has been made by younger generations to the legacy of theANZACs? Ensuring the next generation appreciates and respects the contribution of Australians in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which we have been involved is important. The Department of Veterans' Affairs has a host of commemorative initiatives aimed at teaching young people about Australia's military history. Of the many artefacts emanating from the First World War Gallipoli campaign, what are the most important you've come across? We are currently funding a historical and archaeological study at Gallipoli - the first systematic survey of the battlefields since the First World War. The survey team have found many interesting artefacts helping us to learn more about the lives of Australian and New Zealand troops in the trenches. Some of the artefacts found to-date include: bully beef tins, a Turkish bayonet embedded in the base of a tree, and water bottles with bullet holes, to name just a few. Next year's passing of a century since our troops' first arrival in Gallipoli will attract a larger than
