Father, son combine ■ Trafalgar trainer Chris Hunter combined with son Glenn to snare the Cranbourne Trainers Bonanza Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2575 metres with $24.50 chance Slancio. Beginning brilliantly from outside the front row to lead as the tapes released, Slancio was allowed to bowl at his leisure, giving his rivals the slip on the final bend to score easily by 7 metres in a rate of 209.3 over the Brian Kiesey trained pair of Master Kiesey from last and Candy Digger (three back the markers). Raced by Rhonda Hunter, Slancio making his fifth appearance at the races was bred by veteran trotting enthusiast Dick Lee.
From strength to strength ■ Shelbourne trainer Larry Eastman's 4-Y-0 Northern Luck/Decethree Lombo mare Lombo Cloud Nine continues to go from strength to strength, notching up her seventh victory (four this season - all in succession), by taking out the McPhersons Printing Group Pace for C2 class over 2190 metres at Maryborough. Taking advantage of a mares concession, Lombo Cloud Nine again handled by Damian Wilson was restrained to the tail of the field from outside the front row, before moving forward three wide racing for the bell. Accommodated by Shot From The Hip (one/two) coming out ahead of her, Lombo Cloud Nine enjoyed nice cover in the last lap. Taken four wide on the final bend, Lombo Cloud Nine finished full of running to score from the in-form Maximum Joy and a death-seating Keayang Falcon in a rate of 200.6.
Almost pulled off double ■ SouthAustralian visitors Moore Cullen and Come On Frank made a successful raid on the Victorian harness meeting conducted at Mildura on Tuesday October 9. Moore Cullen, a 4-Y-0 daughter of Christian Cullen and Moore Points trained and driven by David Smith, led throughout from the pole to land the $7000 Tankard Dental Vicbred Platinum Series D (first heat) for C0 class over 2190 metres. Always travelling sweetly, Moore Cullen defied all challengers on straightening to score by 1.1 metres over Twindet which trailed, with the first starter Haryda Hanover (one/one - three wide home turn) third. The mile rate 2-02.3. Smith almost pulled off a double when Artzee after leading from the pole in the Mildura Working Man's Club Pace for C0 class over 1790 metres, was run down by Our Lilly Maloane which trailed in a rate of 2-01.3.
Nyah Pacing Cup ■ All roads will lead to Swan Hill this Saturday when the Nyah HRC stage their first meeting on the all new circuit inside the race course - the highlight being the $30,000 (Group 3) Nyah Pacing Cup.

Smooth Freddy led virtually throughout from gate six in defeating Bronze Destiny which trailed after leading out from the pole, with Travtiano running home late off a three wide trail from last to finish third. The mile rate 2-00.4. Five OclockAffair first up since August led from gate three, before being crossed by the rank outsider Dark Cameo ($79.90) to enjoy the run of the race. Fortunately the roughie was still there on straightening and driven with the patience of Job, Five Oclock Affair dashed home along the sprint lane to blouse D B Dazzler which faced the breeze before striding clear on the home turn, with Lombo Royal Flush (three wide last lap from mid-field) third. The mile rate 2-00.6.
Fast start ■ Whenever the name Manning appears in the winners list, most people assume it was either Peter or daughter Kerryn victorious, however at the Maryborough harness meeting on Monday October 8, it was daughter Michelle who greeted the judge - the race being the Maryborough Cup November 4 Pace for C3 & C4 class and the winner 7-Y-0 Presidential Ball/ Dontsayawordbut gelding Wheatsheaf Avaball.

Trained and driven by Michelle who shares the same Great Western property with her father and sister, Wheatsheaf Avaball making his 85th appearance at the races, began at 100 miles an hour from outside the front row to lead easily and allowed to bowl at his leisure, defied all challengers to score at Supertab odds of $20.70 from Rojen Dream which trailed, with Bubble Art third after following the pair. The mile rate 203.
Refused ■ Parwan pair Craig Demmler (trainer) and Jodi Quinlan (driver) landed the Down Under Muscles @ Eldarin Park 3-Y-0 Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres at Maryborough with beautifully bred Dream Vacation/Adellas Dash colt Glenferrie Dreamer. Raced by Peter Chambers Glenferrie Farm Pty Ltd, Glenferrie Dreamer led virtually throughout from barrier three after crossing TwiggyArgyle on debut inside him, scoring easily by 18 metres in a rate of 2-11.2 in advance of Twiggy Argyle who stuck to her guns, with Solar Spirit third after following the pair. The odds-on favourite Sun Of Sonoko refused to step away from the 10 metre mark, giving the leaders up to 200 metres, making up many yards, before naturally weakening over the concluding stages.
At Kilmore ■ The Conroy's - Bob and Anne-Maree snared two of the three trotting events on the Kilmore program on Sunday October 7, taking the Sitopia Pty Ltd Trotters Handicap for T0 class over 2150 metres with 7-Y-0 S J's Photo/Patrice Pernod mare Mother Nature (trained by Bob), while Anne-Maree's Bill
Peperell made it two from two when successful in the Kilmore Mufflers & Tow Bars Trotters Handicap for T1 or better class over 2150 metres. Mother Nature led virtually throughout from outside the front row to score from Duchess Pat which shadowed her and Im Demimondaine which trailed in 2-12.5, while Bill Peperell (Earl/Special Code) ran home stylishly from mid-field out wide to defeat Mister Scorcher and Apache Speed in 209.1.
Exploded ■ Improving Christian Cullen/Waltons Babe gelding Crosby Cullen brought up two wins in a row when greeting the judge in the Hy Gain Feeds 3-Y-0 Pace over 2080 metres at Cranbourne in a mile rate of 2-02.2.. Raced by June and Gordon Turner, cotrained at Drouin West by son-in-law Gary Quinlan daughter Debbie Quinlan, Crosby Cullen exploded away from outside the front row to lead and was never headed, scoring by 5.8 metres in advance of Glenferrie Lady on debut which was the Harnesslink "run of the race", coming from last to storm home into second place, with Goodtime Billy (one/one) third.
Run ragged ■ Dunnstown based Robert McCartney was successful with 4-Y-0 Village Jasper/Refresh Me gelding The Brazen Jasper in the Central Goldfields Shire Pace for C0 class over 1690 metres at Maryborough on Monday October 8. Driven by Chris Alford, The Brazen Jasper from gate two ran his rivals ragged in defeating Damascus Road which trailed, making no impression in the run home, with Majorflex third after moving to race in the open for the final circuit. The mile rate 1-58.4.
■ Quality 5-Y-0 Blissful Hall/Whatacorka gelding Come On Frank notched up his 27th victory when a comfortable winner of the $5,000 Park Douglas Printing Pace for C6 or better class over 2190 metres in which only a field of four faced the starter. Trained and driven by Darren Billinger, Come On Frank was eased at the start from gate two, settling three back along the markers, with multiple winner Mister Rhys leading from outside the front row in search of his 29th victory from 161 race appearances. Moving to face the open for the last lap and a half, Come On Frank surged to the front on turning. coasting to the wire in advance of Mister Rhys in a rate of 2-00.6, running his last half mile in a sizzling 56.4 (quarter 28.1) around the tight circuit. Christian Shadow finished third after following the winner throughout. Come On Frank is now headed to Tabcorp Park Menangle to contest a race or two for the bigger stakes on offer.
Led for most of trip ■ Dunnstown trainer/driver David Murphy was victorious with 4-Y-0 Blissful Hall/Spank Me Hard gelding Blissful Spanker at Cranbourne on Wednesday, taking out the Warehouse Sales Pace for C0 class over 2080 metres in a rate of 2-02. Bred by Sheron Park's Kevin Riseley, Blissful Spanker raced by a number of stable supporters including David's wife Erin was trapped in the open from gate five, before striding past the leader Lineofcredit shortly after the start and leading for the majority of the journey in defeating Walky Talky along the sprint lane from three back the markers, with Lineofcredit third.
Paid massive $60.70 ■ Ardmona partners Doc Wilson (trainer) and Donna Castles (owner/driver) snared the www.sheppartonhrc.com.au Pace for C2 class over 2190 metres with 6-Y-0 Awaba/Countess Of Belora gelding Black Doug, paying massive Supertab odds of $60.70. Taking a concession for Donna, Black Doug was given an easy time three back in the moving line from gate four and despite making the final bend four wide, finished too well for Johnny Tee (one/ one - three wide home turn) in a rate of 1-59.3, with the hot favourite Born Again Sassy (gate three) weakening into third place after leading.
Brilliant win at Melton ■ Kilmore Cup and Melton Plate winner of last season Bitobliss resumed racing with a brilliant victory in the $15,000 Pegasus Club Cup for M2 to M4 class over 2240 metres at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday. Bred and raced by Don Stewart, Bitobliss trained and driven by Inter Dominion winning son Scott, was making his first race appearance since breaking down in last year's Victoria Cup, settling midfield in the moving line from gate three on the second line. Suited by the brisk tempo out of the gate as In Monaco (gate two) and Saucy Vision (gate four) vied for the front running, with the polemarker Saint Flash momentarily trying to retain the inside running (lead time 45.1) with Saucy Vision surprisingly being allowed to cross In Monaco, Lance Justice put the foot to the floor with The Smiler to assume control mid-race. Set alight three wide racing for the bell, Bitobliss faced the breeze for the final circuit and exploded away on straightening to record a runaway 8.7 metre victory in advance of Composed which was always handy, with Saucy Vision easing off the back of the leader to follow Bitobliss home on turning for third a nose in advance of Saint Flash who flashed home along the markers. A six year old entire by Blissful Hall from Petite Alto, Bitobliss in quarters of 31, 30, 28.4 & 28.1 returned a mile rate of 1-56.9. All going well, Bitobliss may contest either next Saturday's Nyah Pacing Cup or a Melton event prior to defending his Kilmore Cup victory on Sunday October 28.

Your Stars with Christina La Cross ARIES (MAR 21 - APR 20) Your element of fire is pushing you to tell people things which aren't really your business. You could of course, always put this energy into your own affairs. Revelations await if you do. TAURUS (APR 21 - MAY 21) It may be fun talking about other people’s lives but remember what they say about people in glass houses! Try to show support to those who are going through troubles. There's much you can do to help. GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21) Jupiter, the planet of self expansion, pushes you to ask for more than you may actually want. Why not keep all conversations flexible and allow others to talk. You'll be pleasantly surprised by what you hear. CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23) Just make sure you're not causing arguments unnecessarily today. You see Cancer, aspects suggest you may not have all of the facts at your fingertips and compromise could well be your new best friend. LEO (JULY 24 - AUG 23) Taking time out to see how your family or close ones are can teach you much about what really went on in recent dramas and what you can expect now. Love links to an unexpected event. VIRGO (AUG 24 - SEPT 23) You may be angry at someone who's double crossed you but think twice before you exact any revenge. You would be far better to put your time and energy into the future, not the past. LIBRA (SEPT 24 - OCT 23) Someone you've recently met seems to have made quite an impression on you. Don't think twice about admitting how you feel this weekend. It could make all the difference to a new beginning. SCORPIO (OCT 24 - NOV 22) Try not to get so involved in your friends affairs and business. You could be advising them more about what you would do than what is best for them. Filling in forms betters your finances. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23 - DEC 21) Romance seems to come with a hint of danger or a temptation to tell lies. Make sure you decide how far is too far to go before you end up saying something which can come back on you. CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 20) Your ability to take a reality check on life is set to be the making of you. You start to construct plans for what sort of base you'll need to ensure future success is the lasting kind. AQUARIUS (JAN 21 - FEB 19) Setbacks you've endured now turn out to be the very learning curve you needed to find the right route in life. New friends want to be in your company. Throw off this shy mood and indulge yourself. PISCES (FEB 20 - MARCH 20) Children or younger people in general seem to be of more importance. Don't think you have to choose between friends, but stand your ground. Someone is emotionally blackmailing you. Stand up for yourself.
● Brian Smith ■ Observer reader Chris Sarsfield this month wrote a letter to these columns hunting for former Channel 9 employee Neville Booth. Chris writes: “Thank you so much for casting your net in the search for Neville Booth. “I received a call on Thursday from a former employee (newsreader/editor/TV personality, GMV, GTV, AB. etc.) Brian Smith, who is acquainted with Neville. He had read your posting in the Melbourne Observer –a great response! “We had a lengthy chat and discovered a lot of common connections between us (interests, acquaintances, etc “Not quite The 6 Degrees Of Separation but the usual occasional past contacts. Brian’s voice is quite distinctive and I could picture his face immediately upon taking his call. “Brian is well acquainted with the said Booth and has provided me with some potential contact points. “I will pass these on to my friend in Maryland, US, and hope they result in a reunion of sorts (personal, phone, or other). Many thanks again for your support in my quest. The Melbourne Observer is a vital part of the local social network and again, has proved thus! “Please keep up the great work of presenting our local talent (past and current) to the public, and their interaction with people of and in all walks-of-life. - Yours most respectfully, Chris Sarsfield

RADIO AWARDS: FULL LIST Well Hello Dolly, it’s so nice to have you back
● Warwick Reid (Cornelius Hackl), Sarah Somers (Irene Molloy), Victoria Zainal (Dolly Levi), Barry Baker (Horace Vandergelder) and Cara Green (Minnie Fay) take a break during performances for Babirra Music Theatre’s Hello Dolly! at the Whitehorse Centre until October 20. Photo: Owen Davies ■ The loveable, meddling matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi (Victoria Zainal) is in town until Saturday (Oct. 20) at the Whitehorse Centre, 397 Whitehorse Rd, Nunawading. Babirra Music Theatre presents her namesake colourful, delightful musical Hello Dolly! , based on Thornton Wilder’s play The Matchmaker, on October 18, 19, 20 at 8pm, with a 2pm matinee on Saturday. Director Sue Salvato extracts terrific performances from her cast, including Victoria Zainal’s naturalistic, dynamic portrayal of Dolly Levi. This Dolly comes across as a real person, full of heart and soul, at times sad and lonely, but always engaging us in her story. Top performances are also delivered by elegant Sarah Somers (Irene Molloy), Cara Green (Minnie Fay), Emma Harris (Ermengarde), Barry Baker (Horace), Warwick Reid (Cornelius), Matt Jakowenko (Barnaby), Stephen Coutts (Ambrose), Deana Jacobs (Ernestina) and Peter Murphy (Rudolph) and a talented, energetic ensemble. The show’s polished choreography is by Cameron O’Reilly. Theatre companies get lucky to have just a couple of competent male dancers in the cast, but this show has seven, who particularly present spectacularly stylish performances as waiters. An added bonus are the dance skills of Barry Baker (Horace), Warwick Reid (Cornelius) and Matt Jakowenko (Barnaby). Musical director Hamish Paterson’s orchestra renders the lively numbers in fine style, including Before The Parade Passes By, It Only Takes a Moment and, of course Hello Dolly. The lavish costumes designed by Elia Katsiabanis are superb, while Alberto Salvato’s striking set design complements the script. Babirra’s traditionally well-attired front-of-house staff greet patrons. Congratulations to Babirra Music Theatre on an entertaining, believable interpretation of this classic musical. Fortunate to have play here
● Michael James Manaia can be seen at fortyfivedownstairs until October 28. ■ Mary Lou Jelbart, Artistic Director of fortyfive-downstairs, has partnered with New Zealand’s national professional Maori theatre company Taki Rua Productions, to bring Michael James Manaia by writer John Broughton to Melbourne. It is Melbourne’s good fortune to have the play premiered here. Nathaniel Lees directs Te Kohe Tuhaka as Michael in a stunning 90-minute solo performance. Tuhaka appears almost unnoticed on stage casually entering from the auditorium. Back to audience, he then slowly turns and immediately commands your attention as he relates his early life with ex-Maori Battalion father, English mother, brother Matt and extended Maori family living in rural New Zealand. The audience is drawn into his childhood through to early maturity, enlistment in the army and 12-month tour of duty in Vietnam, where his naive attitude graduates to a toughness born of the terror of his fight for survival and being forced to face his own mortality. He returns home, a man dealing with the effects that the war has on his life. Tuhaka relates this poignant story displaying a young man at odds with his culture, the world and his place in it. In an emotionally charged finale, he completes the full circle of his life to date. Set design by Daniel Williams, lighting by Lisa Maule and sound by Maaka McGregor create the perfect atmosphere for the story, from rural New Zealand life through to the drama of Vietnam. Together with Lees’ direction they give Tuhaka the freedom to use the full stage and range of emotions. I doubt that John Broughton would find a better actor and company to interpret his play. Performances: Until October 28. Tues to Fri 7.30 pm. Sat 4 pm and 8 pm. Sun 5 pm. This year the Commission was awarded to Tamara Murphy and her band Murphy’s Law, enabling her a unique opportunity to develop a small seed creative concept into a complete work that doubled as a live event and radio broadcast content. "The PBS Commission enabled me to take my idea for a composition and develop it onto the stage,” Tamara Murphy said. “This has been an amazing experience for me as well as great exposure for my band, with publicity and support from PBS and the 2012 Melbourne International Jazz Festival. “Since then more momentum has been generated enabling Murphy's Law to record a new album for release later this year,” said Murphy. Applications close at 5pm Wednesday, October 31. Melbourne

AN UNFUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM Mailbag Newstalk radio ■ Listener Ken e-mailed the Observer with his report on Bruce Mansfield’s commentary on Nightline and Remember When: “Bruce said Leonard Teale was in Division 4 “He contradicted a e-mail caller who said the 3UZ Sunday morning program interviewing accident victims over night was Nightbeat. He said AW had Nightbeat and UZ had Newsbeat. I remember Nightbeat at UZ with Scoutmaster/leader Tom Jones doing many of them and AW’s was While Melbourne Sleeps.”

Major changes for Overnight show ● Geoffrey Rush ● J P Bolton ■ Behind-the-scenes tensions are believed to have led to the resignation of co-publicist J P Bolton, just days ahead of the opening of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne. Bolton sent an e-mail to selected media (not the Melbourne Observer) on Monday, saying: “Hi all, Advising that I have resigned from Forum. Not sure who the third publicist engaged will be but effective yesterday I'm no longer involved. Happy days, JP.” As reported last month in the Observer’s Melbourne Confidential columns, Bolton had been enlisted to assist publicist Suzie Howie while she battles ongoing health issues. JP Bolton is a respected publicist, and his association with the John Frost organisation appears to remain in excellent order. On Sunday, Bolton issued a news release on behalf of Frost, advising that Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones would be touring with Driving Miss Daisy, after their Brisbane commitments had been filled.
■ Fairfax Radio bosses have ordered immediate major changes to the Australia Overnight program co-hosted by Andrew McLaren and Mark Petkovic from 3AW, and now relayed across the nation. McLaren and Petkovic have been told to stop playing music, and to drop all competitions from their 5½-hour program, which airs from Midnight5.30am, weekdays. The program has dropped all phone-in competitions for listeners, citing difficulties with time differences in some states. The program that goes to air in Melbourne on 3AW is on delayed broadcast to 4BC Brisbane and other Queensland stations during Daylight Saving months. The Australia Overnight program is now heard on Queensland regional radio stations including Cairns, Innisfail and Rockhampton. Over the past week, Qld listeners there have heard a program that invited them to enter competitions that had actually been run and won an hour earlier. McLaren and Petkovic have been ordered to promote one or more talkback topics at the top of each hour, and to take a hard-news approach. They have been told to drop the ‘chummy’ and ‘clubby’ approach with regular Victorian callers. They have also been ordered to replay a series of 2UE and 4BC excerpts in each shift to appease Sydney and Brisbane.

Reviews by Aaron Rourke
What’s Hot and What’s Not On Blu-Ray and DVD
● Legendary filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott on the set of his science fiction epic Prometheus, a vast and intensely epic tale over three decades in the making that has been dividing audiences around the world. FILM: PROMETHEUS: Cast: Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender. Genre: Science Fiction/Thriller. Year: 2012. Rating: M. Running Time: 163. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: *** Verdict: A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe where they must fight a battle to save the future of the human race. Director Ridley's Scott's long awaited prequel to his 1979 Alien is only a distant cousin of the groundbreaking epic that made his original chiller a landmark classic, sadly becoming a victim of the endless imitations to the genre it originally redefined, but as far as science fiction blockbusters go in general, there's enough here to satisfy fans of the genre, and the sets are stunning! FILM: GET THE GRINGO: Cast: Mel Gibson, Peter Stormare. Genre: Action/Drama. Year: 2012. Rating: MA15+ Running Time: 95 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: *** Verdict: Mel Gibson returns to the screen in this action drama as a career criminal who is nabbed by Mexican authorities after a heist and is placed in a tough prison where he learns to survive with the help of a young boy and seek revenge on those who betrayed him. It's down and dirty for Gibson this time round as the thrills and action unfold, but a slightly muddled script, direction, believability and more than one too many nasty characters leaves a sense of dissatisfaction. FILM: DARK SHADOWS: Cast: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham-Carter. Genre: Horror/Comedy. Year: 2012. Rating: M. Running Time: 113 Minutes. Format: DVD. Stars: *** Verdict: Big screen version of the cult classic TV series of the same name is of imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, who is set free after two centuries and returns to his ancestral home in 1972 , where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. What gets off to a great start soon falls into predictable fare, but director Tim Burton's quirky delivery and visuals, set design and regular, Johnny Depp, along with the beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer, all make it a nicely twisted romp. FILM: THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: Cast: Martin Sheen, Kirk Douglas, Charles Durning. Genre: Science Fiction/Action/War. Year: 1980. Rating: PG. Running Time: 104 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***1/2 Verdict: Top notch science fiction action-adventure-thriller of a modern aircraft carrier that is thrown back in time to December 7, 1941, near Hawaii, just hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Great cast ponder the extraordinary possibilities in what comes across as a big screen version of the classic TV series The Twilight Zone. Plenty of fun for action and sci-fi buffs, most notably the spectacular aerial dogfight between two Japanese WWII planes and two modern day F-14 Tomcat fighters, and made all the more realistic as the production company was loaned the aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Nimitz for use, and everything on it.

COUP FOR BENDIGO
■ The Bendigo Jockey Club is over the moon that Australia's golden girl of cycling, Anna Meares, will be their special guest on their Cup Day on Wednesday October 31. Regarded as the best ever women's cyclist produced in Australia,Anna will be the special guest of the Club on their big day. Anna is one of Australia's favorite sporting heroes and one of the most talented athletes in the world. She is a three time Olympian, two- time Olympic champion and won a Gold and Silver in London this year. On top of this Anna picked up a Gold, along with a Silver and a Bronze, in Beijing, in 2008. Anna is also the winner of the Australian Cyclist of the Year in 2008 and 2011 and at the age of 20 was awarded the Order of Australia Medal. Bendigo Jockey Chairman Brendan Drechsler said "Horse racing creates many memorable stories of overcoming adversity to achieve success. “There is no better story of overcoming adversity to achieve Olympic glory than that of Anna Meares. “It wasn't that long ago that Anna had an horrific fall, and felt it was the end of the road for her, but with her typical fighting spirit fought back, to achieve fame for her favorite sport all round the globe. “This is particularly relevant given that our Cup sponsor is Jayco, who through their Managing Director, Gerry Ryan, has not only been a wonderful supporter of our Club, but for many other sports, including a strong emphasis on cycling.” Gerry Ryan is the man behind the Green Edge Cycling team taking on the world's best. To add another string to his bow, he is a proud part-owner of Melbourne Cup winner, Americain, who saluted for him in 2010. Supporting the visit of Anna Meares to the Jayco Bendigo Cup is Luke Curtis, Chief Executive Officer of Skill Training Victoria in Bendigo.
Ted Ryan
Luke kindly contacted the Bendigo Jockey Club to offer assistance with the arrangements to have Anna come to Bendigo and allow racegoers the opportunity to acknowledge her achievements at the Olympic Games, not only in London, but in all her endeavours, especially on top of her terrible accident. Anna will make appearances in various corporate facilities on Bendigo Cup Day and at Fashions on the Field and will be driven down the main straight accompanied by Gerry Ryan, with the Jayco Bendigo

Cup trophy, as part of the day. The Jayco Bendigo Cup now carries prizemoney of $250,000, and is the qualifying lead up to the Melbourne Cup to be run at Flemington six days later. I have had the pleasure of working with the Club over the past few years and it is always a great day on their beautiful track at Epsom. Hope to see you there.

BEAMS BREAKS THROUGH FOR FIRST COPELAND

Observer
■ Collingwood mid-fielder Dayne Beams has capped his finest season in black and white by winning the 2012 E W Copeland Trophy. The 22 year-old won his first Copeland, which is awarded to the player deemed to be Collingwood’s best and fairest player, with 205 votes to finish 35 votes clear of 2011 winner Scott Pendlebury and 58 clear of three-time club champion Dane Swan. Pendlebury led the count after 11 rounds but Beams, who had answered a call to move into the centre square upon the loss of Luke Ball to a knee injury in round three, was clear with six matches to play and was not headed. He received a standing ovation from a crowd of almost 1500 at Crown Palladium. Steele Sidebottom, like Beams a next generation mid-fielder coach Nathan Buckley asked more of this year, finished fourth and captain Nick Maxwell was recognised for his fine return to form with a fifth place fin-
ish. Beams’ Copeland victory completes a heady few weeks for the laconic Queenslander, who was awarded his first All-Australian jumper last month for a season that was brilliantly consistent. Beams gathered 741 possessions across 24 matches, at an average of 30.9 per match, and worked impressively without the football. He finished equal second on the Collingwood goal kicking list with 28 goals but also laid an average of 4.2 tackles per match. In just four seasons at the Westpac Centre, Beams has won a premiership (2010), a Copeland and an All-Australian jumper to suggest that he has a long career ahead of him at the heart of the Magpie mid-field. He signed a new three year deal with the club in August. Pendlebury was also a major winner. Apart from the RT Rush Trophy for his second place finish in the best and fairest count, the elegant midfielder won the Members Best Player
award and the Bob Rose award for the best player in the finals series. Other award winners were: ■ Harry Collier trophy (best first year player) Jamie Elliott ■ Gordon Coventry trophy (leading goal kicker): Travis Cloke ■ Darren Millane award (best clubman): Alan Toovey ■ Gavin Brown award (desire indicators): Nick Maxwell ■ John Wren trophy (for best VFL player): Kris Pendlebury ■ E W Copeland Trophy Top Voting 1.
