People NOMINEES LISTED FOR JAZZ AWARDS Cam Butler launches CD
● Cam Butler ■ Save My Soul (Symphony No. 3) is the follow up album to electric guitarist and composer Cam Butler's 2008 album, Dark Times (Symphony No. 2). Featuring a true symphonic lineup of a 23-piece string section (conducted by Benjamin Northey), orchestral harp, timpani and percussion, drums, acoustic guitars and solo electric guitar, the result is the finest example yet of Cam's orchestral vision to combine modern electric guitar techniques and sound with string orchestras. With a timeless, quasi-modal sound, the music of Save My Soul is deliberately written in related keys - A minor, A major, D minor - and has a basic 3/ 4 pulse through each of the five movements or tracks. Like all of Cam's music, Save My Soul is completely musically unique: deceptively simple, the music carries many layers of deep emotion and lush beauty. Not slipping into any easy categories, Save My Soul exists in its own world between cinematic orchestral music, modern classical and Australian underground guitar music. Save My Soul is available exclusively at concerts or online at www.cambutler.com Save My Soul will be launched at a special multimedia concert with mulitple screens, projections and surround sound audio at the Northcote Uniting Church, 251 High St. Northcote, on Saturday, May 19. Another launch concert will be held on Saturday, May 26 at Theatre Royal, Castlemaine, with Seth Rees. www.cambutler.com www.youtube.com/user/cambutlersavemysoul

Hugh Bonneville and Catherine Langrishe will perform the staged reading at Theatre Royal, Brighton, UK, as a private funraising event for Martlets Hospice. RACING HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ■ Dual Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jim Cassidy was announced as one of 10 inductees into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame on Friday. Affectionately known as ‘Pumper’, Cassidy joins an esteemed list of inductees across the categories of jockey, horse, trainer and associate and fittingly has been inducted at a ceremony in his home town of Sydney. Cassidy joins modern day contemporaries Damien Oliver and Darren Beadman in the Hall of Fame as jockeys who currently still ply their trade today and is the only jockey to be inducted still competing in Australian racing. The official induction ceremony was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney on Friday evening and was held in conjunction with the 2012 Australian Racing Conference. In the jockey category, Csssidy joins Bernborough’s rider Athol Mulley among this year’s inductees while the 2012 trainer inductees are Melbourne Cup winning trainer Grahame Heagney and two-time Victorian trainers premiership winner Theo Lewis. For the first time since 2005, the Australian Racing Hall of Fame has inducted five of the sports equine heroes. International hero and ‘bargain buy’ Takeover Target joins 1991 Caulfield and Melbourne Cup heroine Let’s Elope, ten-time Group 1 champion Octagonal, the Tommy Smith-trained Redcraze and multiple Group 1 victor High Caste are the five horse inductees for 2012. One of the men synonymous with the legendary Phar Lap, his famous strapper Aaron Treve ‘Tommy’Woodcock, is the inductee in the associate category in 2012.

Media Flashes ■ The stage show, War Horse, is coming to Melbourne’s Arts Centre. A media call is being held today (Wed.) where Puppetry Director Finn Caldwell introduces the star of the show Joey, a life size horse puppet strong enough for men to ride, his flanks, hide and sinews built of steel, leather and aircraft cables. ■ Network 10’s first-half profit sunk by 70 per cent. ■ SevenWest Media has left the Australian Press Council. The company publishes The West Australian. ■ Little Big Shots - Melbourne’s own international film festival for kids - will be launched for the eighth year on Saturday, June 2. Eighty short films will be featured.
● Roy Best ■ What do you do with the rest of the day once you have been to the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and march? CHIME (Choral Institute Melbourne Inc) Choir suggests you join them at the Melbourne Town Hall at 2.30 pm for a special ANZAC Day concert on Wednesday, April 25. This is the second year that CHIME has performed an ANZAC Day concert, and as the inaugural concert was so well attended that it proved that modern day Melburnians want to mark and remember this important day with music and a community spirit. Hosted by former ABC 774 personality Derek Guille, in this year's concert CHIME is joined by the Exaudi Choir and the Melbourne Villers-Bretonneux Brass Ensemble. Adding to the array of talent on the Melbourne Town Hall stage will be crowd pleasing Melbourne tenor Roy Best and music theatre star Silvie Paladino, with Thomas Heywood at the famous Melbourne Town Hall organ. A particularly good reason for buying your ticket to the CHIME ANZAC Day concert is the fact that proceeds will be shared between the RSL, Legacy, Carry On (Victoria) and CHIME Inc. Tickets are $35 and $30 concession, and can be booked at www.chime.org.au/tickets. General enquiries: 0404 196 733 - Julie Houghton

Bangers and mash, or snail porridge ■ The guidebooks will tell you that Bray, about an hour’s drive west of London, is the archetypal English rural village. It’s all about little thatched cottages, a cricket ground on which they’ve thwacked the leather since 1798, a parish church dating back to 1293, and a pub where King Charles II would dally with his mistress Nell Gwynn for whom he had arranged convenient accommodation in nearby Windsor. But Bray is anything than your runof-the-mill English village, and you need to be more than well-heeled to even contemplate owning so much as a cottage here, never mind berthing the boat at the local marina on the River Thames. Expatriate Aussie Rolf Harris lives in Bray, as does former TV talk-show host Sir Michael Parkinson, Elton John lives just upstream and is sometimes seen dining in Bray, and so too Natalie Imbruglia. And well they might, for Bray has suddenly found itself the gastronomic capital of Britain. Now before you start chortling that one of the shortest books in the world is A Treasury of English Cooking, we should point out that one Heston Blumenthal is the latest to make Bray his home, and if others can cook up a storm, he can cook up a tornado. Back in the 1980s Blumenthal, who actually grew up a stone’s throw from Bray, taught himself to be a chef by

Ideal with Asian dishes ■ We don’t know if many others make it, and would be interested to hear of any who do, but Lillypilly Estate’s Robert Fiumara has an interesting blend that he’s trademarked as Tramillon – a medium dry white created from Gewurztraminer and Semillon. He’s been making it since 1982 at his winery at Leeton in the Riverina, and is seeing it enjoy healthy sales both here and overseas, especially he says in the UK. By bringing together the spicy and fragrant Gewurztraminer and the crisp, dry freshness of Semillon he’s crafted a wine from the 2010 vintage that’s got a slightly sweet edge to it, rockmelon flavours with subtle lime and a hint of sherbert, and is a marvellous match for spicy Asian dishes. You can order it direct from the winery at $13.50 (plus freight) on www.lillypilly.com And ask also about their 2012 Sauvignon Blanc that at $14.50 is one of those easy-drinking, zippy dry whites that goes ideally with all kinds of casual dining from crab cakes to Mexican-style chicken and grilled seafoods.
Pictured ■ Slighty sweet Tramillon marvellous match with spicy Asian dishes ■ Enjoy this one with pork cutlets and an apple and date relish
One For Lunch ■ The Margaret River’s Voyager Estate had one of their best-ever growing seasons in 2010, followed by an outstanding vintage for their red wines, especially their interesting Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot blend. Manager of Winemaking and Viticulture, Steve James says Margaret River has been “incredibly lucky” in recent years with a string of great vintages, the 2010 giving exceptional fruit purity, elegance and fine silky tannins for reds that have been some of the region’s best to date. The 2010 Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot is only Voyager’s second such blend, and actually includes a 1per cent touch of Petit Verdot and 1per cent Shiraz to the 60 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 38 per cent Merlot. It’s resulted in a medium-bodied wine with delightful summer berry, cherry and plum fruit flavours, together with softer hints of vanilla, spice and nougat. Pay $24 and enjoy with pork cutlets and apple and date relish.
studying French cookery books ... just as many of us taught ourselves the basics of the kitchen with Margaret Fulton’s Cook Book. The difference is that he ended up one of the best chefs in the world, and opened The Fat Duck restaurant in Bray in 1995. Within five years he had won himself no less than three Michelin stars. And in 2006, his Fat Duck was named Best Restaurant in the World, beating out El Bulli, a restaurant in a remote village north of Barcelona, while Frommers, the famous travel guide, named The Fat Duck one of the world’s “must-visit” food and wine establishments. Yet it’s a quite unpretentious building, and inside simply a large square with white-walls, wooden beams holding up the ceiling, and a bare floor. But look more closely outside and it can be almost garlanded with Rollers and Jaguars and their uniformed chauffeurs, together with a smattering of Ferraris and Beamers. It’s the menu, of course, that accounts for the fact that you have to book months in advance, although you can be excused for wondering how Heston dreamed up some of the dishes on that menu. And the ‘Tasting Menu’ will put you back 180 pounds (around AU$275 per head) – before you even look at the wine list or consider the ‘optional’ 12.5 per cent service charge. Amongst some of Heston Blumenthal’s creations are a Pommery mustard ice cream accompanied by red cabbage gazpacho, roast foie gras with barberry, braised konbu (seaweed harvested off Japan and Korea) and crab biscuit, or his hugely popular snail porridge with Iberico Bellota ham and shaved fennel… There’s also a more homely pork loin pot roast that comes with a gratin of truffled macaroni, or how about salmon poached in licorice gel and artichokes, vanilla mayonnaise and golden trout roe? Or a saddle of venison with beetroot soubise and risotto of spelt and umbles … yes, umbles, the 14th century offal dish that gave its name to the expression “eating humble pie,” and of which British diarist Samuel Pepys wrote in July 1663 “Mrs Turner did bring us an Umble-pie hot out of her oven, (it was) extraordinarily good.” But Heston Blumenthal’s success also brought its problems. Where to put the many movers and shakers wanting to sample his culinary delights, but unable to get into The Fat Duck? His answer was to buy the village’s two pubs, although to the consternation of many locals. After all it was at one, The Crown that King Charles II would dally with Nell Gwynn. This was British heritage he was possibly interfering with if he changed the structure of The Crown … But their fears were soon allayed.
