Mark Richardson ♥ Straight from the heart

E-Mail: mark@localmedia.com.au

Siblings, one singular sensation ■ When it comes to showbiz siblings and the penny finally drops where we realise two entertainers are indeed related, (who are half -brothers? Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez? Really!) we may seek reassurance, "Yes I just 'Goggled' them for you. Look at them closely, can't you see it?" At a glance, Chicago's talented duo Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway may cause Melburnians to raise their eyebrows when they first introduce themselves as sisters as they bring their highly acclaimed cabaret show, Sibling Revelry, to Melbourne's Recital Centre next week. Ann's dark, husky and jazzflavoured sound remains the perfect complement for Liz's clear bell tones as they sing the best of the American Songbook from show tunes to jazz and pop. Throw in a mix of wit, humour and an unbreakable bond that shines on stage, and we will immediately understand why they have been performing their acclaimed show sideby-side since 1995. Yes, they are sisters all right! I connected with both Ann and Liz on their Revelry Porch, where I also learnt Ann wrote and sang the theme song for the popular sitcom The Nanny and has previously written songs for Barbara Streisand and Carole King. Liz is a Tony Award nominee and an Emmy Award-winning actress, singer and recording artist and is also a star of major Broadway shows including Cats, Miss Saigon and The Three Musketeers - to name a few. Growing up, was there much sibling rivalry between you both or have you always been besties? Ann: We are sisters - when we were kids there was some rivalry, now it's mostly revelry. I thought Liz got more attention and whatever she wanted because she was the baby and she thought I got to do more because I was the oldest. We were both right. Our biggest curse then, and our biggest blessing now is how different we are. We are a template for world peace. If we can get along - anyone can! Liz: The rivalry that we play up in our show is all in fun. When we were kids there was definitely some sibling rivalry; I found it difficult to be the baby sister of someone who was so accomplished. But now, I'd say the percentage is 98 per cent revelry, 2 per cent rivalry.

Revelry Porch Thoughts

Growing up, did you entertain family and friends performing shows and skits in your lounge room or special family events? Ann: Yes - we were the Von Trapp family of Chicago and there was no turning back! When we were growing up I thought all mothers sang torch songs at their piano at 3pm in the afternoon when their kids came home from school. I thought all dads sang scat and did interpretive dancing on a Sunday morning. Liz: Ann was always singing and playing the piano when we were growing up. I on the other hand was shy, and a "closet singer" and would only sing when everyone left the house. What do you enjoy most working with your sister? Ann: It's so amazing to have a collaborator who you know as well as your own flesh and blood. And that means you also have your own 24 hour hotline because we always understand the ups and downs of the business. Working with Liz is profoundly fun. We know each other in a way that nobody else does, and to share that bond through music is not only a joy, but an honour. Liz: I think we're really lucky that we've both had very successful careers in the same profession. We are also able to help each other out through ups and downs of this business, because we really are best friends! How do you handle creative disputes or differences of opinion when they arise? Ann: The only challenge is when Liz becomes very dutiful and tries to get me to join her in her one-cocktail a day discipline. I am sure I will have the compassion of the Aussies on that one. Liz: The process of putting together our shows isn't always easy as we have different styles of working, but in the end we always agree. No chal-
