● Michael Boyd performs a breathtaking illusion with Carla Broadway in Mystique, at The Palms at Crown on July 4. ■ Acclaimed Australian illusionist Michael Boyd brings Mystique and some of the world’s best illusions to The Palms at Crown for two shows only on July 4. Michael’s show features impressive illusions, some designed and built by the same team that works alongside the famous David Copperfield, as well as jaw-dropping escapes, levitations, transformations, special effects and mind blowing disappearances.. Melbourne-born Michael’s magician grandfather taught him all about the world of magic, and by the age of 13 Michael joined the Young Magicians Magic School to hone his craft. Following high school, he hit the road performing three shows a day until eventually getting his big break on the TV show Pot Luck. With his career skyrocketing, Michael braved the TV reality world last year and entered Australia’s Got Talent. He says of the experience: “ It was the most exciting, terrifying and gratifying appearance of my life – it could have gone sour and I took a risk.” Turn To Page 49

Concert at Preston ■ Fresh from a recent standing room-only performance of Mozart's Requiem at Collins St Baptist Church, conductor Mario Dobernig is gearing up for a concert with Preston Symphony Orchestra on Sunday (June 22). The concert will feature soprano Lecia Robertston singing Strauss's Four Last Songs - an appropriate tribute in the this 160th anniversary year since the birth of Richard Strauss. Lecia has enjoyed a successful operatic career in England and returned to Australia in 2006, and has sung solo roles for Victorian Opera, Opera Queensland and State Opera of South Australia. The program will also include Beethoven's popular Symphony No 7 and Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave overture. Conductor Dobernig is a busy chap, being conductor of both Victoria Chorale and Preston
● Anthony Bolger is Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls playing at the Karralyka Theatre until June 21. Photo: Craig Wiltshire ■ Mountain District Music Society is currently presenting Guys and Dolls. It is a musical fable of Broadway, based on a story of characters of Damon Runyon. It has the music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. At the Karralyka Theatre, Mines Rd, Ringwood East, until Saturday (June 21). Guys and Dolls is directed by Tyler Hess, with Danny Forward as Musical Director, and the choreography by Craig Wiltshire. Tyler Hess has directed this production with many variations of the original show we would expect. He has cast very well with some of the best leads you would wish to find. Sky Masterson (Anthony Bolger) was perfectly cast , Nathan Detroit (Harrison Wall) performed well as did Nicely Nicely (Robert Clark), Benny Southstreet (Scott Reid), Rusty Charlie (Mat Hirst) all gave great performances and their vocals were excellent. Sarah Brown (Jasmine Dare) gave an outstanding performance, along with Adelaide (Jaclyn De Vincente) who fitted into her role perfectly and gave a great performance, Agnes Abernathy (Dot Parker) was well suited to her role. Again we were treated to a team of leads with great singing voices. The dancers and featured ensembles provided excellent routines with tap and acrobatics to delight the audience. The set was big and was utilised to serve many aspects of the various scenes during the production. One thing I did find, was the movement on the stage behind the performers was a little distracting. Mountain District Musical Society’s production of Guys and Dolls was different but was also entertaining. The audience enjoyed the first night and I am sure as the season continues the small problems they may have had will disappear. The show continues on Thursday (June 19), Friday (June 20) and Saturday (June 21) at 8pm, there is a matinee on Saturday at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased on line at www.karralyka.com.au/MDMSGuysDolls.aspx or you can book by phone by calling 9879 2933 (credit card bookings only) with operator assisted calls Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 4.30pm. - Review by Brian Amos, Radio Eastern 98.1 Theatre Program

Million Dollar Riff
■ The music we hear as teenagers usually has a long lasting effect on us throughout our lives. My own teenage years were filled with the sounds of Skyhooks, and the love of those wacky chaps has never dimmed, even though it is now several decades on. And it seems that Bob Starkie, best know to we fans as Bongo, is still feeling the magic as he is performing a Skyhooks legend concert called Million Dollar Riff on Saturday July 12 at the Yarraville Club. This will be a night of Skyhooks hits to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the success of their debut album Living In The 70s. That album was the highest selling album by an Australian act in Australia up until that time and was at the top of the charts for 16 weeks. It s now number nine in the book of 100 Best Australian Albums. Skyhooks certainly changed the face of Australian rock 'n roll in the 70s with two of the best selling albums ever - the other one was Ego Is Not A Dirty Word. The way they combined their great rock 'n roll sound with quirky stage antics and fabulous make up and costumes really got this theatre-mad teenager 'hooked' very quickly. Bob Starkie is determined not to let the magic of Skyhooks die.He will be
When The Cream Sinks To The Bottom ■ No matter how painful the theme may be, or how overwhelmingly the actors may identify with that theme, dramatic work for public performance needs to remember that engagement with the audience is vital. We are told by Lloyd Jones, the devisor of the ensemble piece When The Cream Sinks to The Bottom that it results partly from his personal experiences and is part of a longer series , and we can certainly see earnest desire from him and the large cast to make us aware of the pain of melancholia. But the best that can be said of this work is that it is a confused collage of physical expressions of melancholia, lacking focus and direction. We are alerted by Jones before entering the theatre that we may feel uncomfortable. Indeed we did, but too often because the large, mostly silent, sometimes catatonic group did not engage us. The whole thing became a convergence of sounds from a small wind and percussive team , an interesting black beaked , partly hidden bird, and painful non interacting victims’ attempts to move or make sounds. The title When The Cream Sinks to The Bottom may suggest lives drowning in depression but if so we perhaps needed to see some “cream” for meaning to “sink” in to an audience. The nude segment, always difficult, seemed gratuitous, even if it was meant to symbolize the helplessness of the awful state of melancholia. I put the disastrous and dangerous ending down to insufficient rehearsal, and would hope sincerely that it has been dropped for further performances. Performance Season: Until June 22 Venue: La Mama Theatre, 205 Faraday St, Carlton. Tickets:$25/$15 Bookings: 93476948 lamama.com.au - Review by Maggie Morrison

■ The Casting Guild of Australia was officially launched last week. Established in 2013 as a not-for-profit organisation, the CGA represents established casting directors working in film, TV and theatre in Australia. Officially launching themselves this week into the industry, this new guild acts as a united voice to address and assist in raising the standards and working practices of casting directors in Australia. They aim to work closely with colleagues in the industry including agents, producers, directors, and state funding bodies. With members across Australia, from agencies and theatres that have played an integral part in shaping the out-put of the Australian arts and entertainment industry, the CGA provides members with a central forum and a united voice within the industry. Already, at least 90 per cent of all casting directors in Australia have embraced the guild, and are now CGA members. Without the skill of casting directors selecting the right artist for the right role, some of our most famous exports may not have had the impact or success that they have. Members of the CGA have been responsible for the casting of such iconic Australian films and series as Romper Stomper, Top Of The Lake, The Great Gatsby, Wolf Creek, The Rover and the upcoming Russell Crowe feature, The Water Diviner. Theatre productions include the likes of Private Lives (MTC) and The Rocky Horror Show. The newly formed Casting Guild of Australia will create a code of practice to establish respect for the profession. They will work to raise awareness of casting directors’ contribution to projects, and to establish fair value for a CD’s contribution to projects in development. And finally, to create enforceable guidelines to protect actors paying for audition workshops. What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs
● Screen great Bruce Dern gives a wonderful Oscar nominated performance as a man on a personal mission in Nebraska. FILM: NEBRASKA: Genre: Adventure/Drama. Cast: Bruce Dern, Will Forte, Stacy Keach, June Squibb. Year: 2013. Rating: M. Running Time: 115 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **** Verdict: Melancholy and poignant story of an aging father who is determined to make the long trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Sweepstakes Marketing prize. Screen stalwart Bruce Dern (Coming Home, Family Plot, The Driver, They Shoot Horses Don't They?) gives a totally compelling and compassionate performance as the aging father. Fine supporting cast, most notably Stacy Keach, the black & white cinematography may not appeal to some audiences today, but this well made character driven study of aging, friendship and family and is well worth going on, especially to see one of the screens great character actors and stars prove beyond doubt that he still shines above all others. FILM: ROBOCOP: Genre: Action/Crime/Sci-Fi. Cast: Joel Kinnamann, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish. Year: 2014. Rating: M. Running Time: 117 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ** Verdict: St in 2028 Detroit, Alex Murphy, a loving husband, father and good cop is critically injured in the line of duty, and a multinational conglomerate sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. This remake, reboot, reimagining, rehash, call it what you may, of the 1987 cult action-crime-sci-fi-thriller with Peter Weller and directed by Paul Verhoeven, is a popcorn pot-boiler has been reduced to paper thin intensity and emotion. Great cast look dazed and confused throughout, though Gary Oldman gives it his best shot, as the pyrotechnics, special effects and action works itself around them. There's not anything new here to grasp except that the more intensely driven and darkly comic original is the best shot. FILM: THE KILLERS: Genre: Crime/Drama/Mystery/Thriller. Cast: Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, John Cassavetes, Clu Gulager. Year: 1964. Rating: M. Running Time: 93 Minutes Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***½ Verdict: Not the 1946 classic but Dirty Harry director Don Siegel's stylish and thrilling adaptation of the classic story of two professional hit men who try to find out who hired them for a job and why. Lee Marvin gives a shattering, standout performance in his first starring role as the volatile no-nonsense hit man, and is matched scene for scene by Clu Gulager as his menacing partner. Screen hit men would never be the same again, it was these two performances that were the inspiration for the hit men duo of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, among many others. Originally made for television as Universal Pictures first Movie of the Week it was considered to tense and violent and release in cinemas. Great direction and cast all shine in this razor sharp, nail-biting neo noir thriller. FILM: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF: Cast: Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey, Molly Picon. Genre: Musical/Drama/Comedy. Year: 1971. Rating: PG. Running Time: 179 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ****½ Verdict: Now available on Blu-Ray, the spectacular Oscar winning film version of the classic play of the same name set in pre-revolutionary Russia of the poor Jewish peasant Tevye the Milkman in the small village of Anatevka who must contend with marrying off his three daughters while anti-Semitic sentiment threatens his village, family and home. Full of vibrant colour, energy, classic music and songs from the breathtaking opening sequence to the last frame. Topol is perfectly cast as Tevye the Milkman in a flawless and inspiring performance, as do the entire cast who each gave their heart and soul. One of the last truly great musicals to come from Hollywood, a tour-de-force that excels on every level thanks to the brilliant direction by veteran filmmaker Norman Jewison (In The Heat of The Night). A funny, thrilling, poignant and haunting tale of survival and tradition that touches all the emotions from A to Z, and once seen, is never forgotten. Nominated for eight Academy awards and winning three, Fiddler On The Roof is not only an epic entertainment, it's an unforgettable experience! Be sure to check out the outstanding documentary Norman Jewison: Filmmaker.

● Writer/performer Mark Wilson. Photo: Sarah Walker ■ In Shakespeare’s day, when only male actors were employed, a bearded Lady Macbeth may have been as unremarkable as it seems today in the wake of Conchita Wurst’s Eurovision triumph. At a press conference ‘award-winning actress’ Mark Wilson, ‘daughter of a theatre legend and a prima ballerina,’ discusses her new project playing the part of Lady Macbeth alongside her partner in ‘the Scottish play’ directed by her famous father. Lady Macbeth, shorthand for all ambitious, scheming, murderous and unhinged wives of the world, delivers her monologue. “Unsex me here,” she commands her audience, “And fill me up from the crown to the top – full of direst cruelty.” Having first lulled him and the audience into a false sense of security, our protagonist unleashes a tirade against the unsuspecting ‘guy’ plucked from the front row. What follows is a rollercoaster performance juggling the fine line between comedy and tragedy beginning with comic pastiche before dissolving into a much darker place and ending in the everyday. Blackly funny, the frenetic and dynamic Wilson is in command from start to finish, from set-up to revelation. And the audience, mouths and eyes wide in shock and awe, follow in his wake. There are complex ideas underpinning this work that, after the initial shock wears off, initiate some deeper thinking. Wilson’s solo theatre performance, UnSex Me, comes with a warning and rightly so. What you get is a brave, honest, funny and shocking piece of theatre art that succeeds due to the immense talents of its writer/performer, Wilson. - Review by Kathryn Keeble

Showgrounds memories galore
■ Lilley finished the night with a double after Kiwi gelding Iceobar greeted the judge in the 2nd Heat of The Empire Stallions Vicbred Super Series for 2-Y0 Colts & Geldings over 2180 metres. Coming off an eighth to Beaudiene Boaz at the recent Harness Jewels meeting at Cambridge in New Zealand's North Island, Iceobar with Greg Sugars in the sulky pressed forward from gate five to lead and rated to perfection, had too much in hand for Show Me The Bling which was meritorious in finishing second after racing in the open, with the lightly raced Virgil Hilts running the race of his life for third after a one/one trip. The mile rate 1-59.9.
■ Memories of the Melbourne Showgrounds and Moonee Valley came flooding back at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday, when Lawrence (Smeaton) trainer Ken Whelan was successful with 5-Y-0 Artiscape/ Sokissmegdbye gelding Kisartis scored in the Renown Silverware Pace Final for C3 & C4 class over 2240 metres. Given a lovely trip one/ one from gate four for the final circuit, Kisartis was eased three wide at the straight entrance and fought on like a bulldog to score from Mary Mon (four wide home turn) from last, with Suerte third after leading up the outside division from the bell. The mile rate 2-00.2 (last half 57.7 - quarter 28.3). Many readers will recall the success Ken experienced in the halcyon days driving horses such as Doxa Joe, Robin Guy, Puhinui Jim, Chamfer Pool, Scorchin Sun and Findsumore just to name a few.
Toyed with rivals
Pressure
1.5 metre margin ■ Bolinda trainer Brent Lilley was victorious with in-form 4-Y-0 Live Or Die/Trusted Mota gelding Crusader Acey in the Reg Shinn Memorial Pace for C2 & C3 class over 1690 metres at Kilmore on Tuesday June 10. Taking a concession for stable "apprentice" Kyle Marshall, Crusader Acey was taken back from outside the front row to slot in nicely one/one trailing On Fire Within (gate four), with the polemarker Wounded retaining the front running. Sent forward three wide racing for the bell to park outside Wounded for the final circuit, Crusader Acey raced clear on turning to register a 1.5 metre margin in a rate of 1-58.1 from Wounded who couldn't match him over the concluding stages, with Intergalactic coming from last for Lisa Miles to finish an eye catching third.
Ran race of his life
■ Brent Lilley was again in the winners stall at Kimore on Wednesday, when high class Art Major/ Mesmerizing colt Messini (Chris Alford) led for the majority of the 2100 metre journey of the Vicbred Super Sires Series for 3-Y-0 Colts & Geldings (Heat 3). Always travelling, Messini toyed with his rivals to register a 12.7 metre victory in 1-57.6 over Ideal Majority which trailed and Field Major (four back the markers). In was Messini's 8th victory in 22 outings.
Hat-trick of wins ■ Melton based Maree and John Caldow have 3-Y0 Mach Three/Top Spirit gelding Top Trio racing at his peak, bringing up a hat-trick of wins by taking the Central Goldfields Shire Vicbred Pace for C0 class over 1690 metres at Maryborough on Wednesday. Given a cosy passage by John three back along the markers from gate two, with Gotta Go Party inside him leading, Top Trio was angled three wide approaching the home turn and finished best to score by 3.3 metres in a rate of 1-57.3 from the heavily backed pacemaker, with Kitty Fisher third after following the runner up.
Three wide solo ■ Parwan duo Craig Demmler (trainer) and Jodi Quinlan (driver) scored a strong victory with 4-Y-0 McArdle/Glenferrie Miss entire Glenferrie College in the Redpath Tyre Expo Pace for C3 & C4 class over 1690 metres at Maryborough. Taken back at the start from gate five to settle closer to last than first with Classy Guy driven for speed from outside the front row to lead, Glenferrie College despite racing three wide solo in the final circuit, ran home strongly to defeat the pacemaker and Tere T in a rate of 1-55.5.
Sprouted wings ■ Wayne Potter provided an upset result to the 2nd Heat of the Empire Stallions Vicbred Super Series for 3-Y-0 Colts & Geldings at Geelong, when Modern Art/Yeronga Ecila colt Sketch Me scored at Supertab odds of $12.80. Driven by Daniel Jack, Sketch Me ran home stylishly from three back in the moving line and after making the final bend at least four wide, sprouted wings in the straight to register a runaway 5.1 victory in 1-58.9 over Holdonsu and Smokey Quartz (one/ one). - Len Baker
■ What a tremendous start Avalon (Lara) trainer Amanda Grieve has experienced since being granted a trainers licence only two weeks ago. With her first starter Tandias Bromac saluting the judge at Bendigo on June 7 followed by a Shepparton victory with Upanatom a day later, Amanda landed her first metropolitan winner when bonny 6-Y-0 mare Baby Bling captured the $25,000 Harness Breeders (Vic) Richmond Lass for M0 or better class over 1720 metres at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday. Driven by NSW based Luke McCarthy, Baby Bling a highly credentialed daughter of Western Terror and Alldatglittersisgold was restrained from outside the front line to settle at the tail of the field, but was off and running when the pace eased to slide around and park outside the leader Blazeaway Macray. Applying the pressure approaching the final bend, Baby Bling responded in magnificent fashion to race clear on turning and defy a late challenge from Steam Washed (three wide last lap from mid-field), with La Machane third after following the runner up home from last. Returning a mile rate of 1-55.3 for the journey, Baby Bling registered her 21st victory in 52 outings.

Settled ■ With Redwood Day (July 20) fast approaching, the Maryborough HRC continues to cater for the squaregaiters, with Wednesday's meeting featuring two races for them - the Seelite Windows & Doors Trot for T0 class over 2190 metres and the VSTA Trotters Handicap for T3 or better class over 2190 metres. Bolinda trainer Kari Males produced a nice type in four year old Sundon/Vicki Vale gelding Sunnyvale Comet to land the Seelite Trot when making his race debut. Bred and raced by Mick Grace and Patrick Mitchell, Sunnyvale Comet driven by a very much in-form Greg Sugars settled one/one from gate two on the second line and was always travelling sweetly, with Keep Me Tender (David Moran) raced in the same interests going forward to lead from gate four on the second row. Moving outside the leader approaching the home turn, Sunnyvale Comet ran home stylishly to score by 1.9 metres in a mile rate of 2-02.4 over Keep Me Tender, with William John 21 metres away third following a mid-field passage.
Quality ■ The VSTA Trotters Handicap brought together a quality field with ultra consistent mare Paris Pepperell successful in a mile rate of 2-03.6. Trained at Maiden Gully (Bendigo) by David Van Ryn, Paris Pepperell starting from 10 metres after taking a mares concession, was driven quietly by Gavin Lang settling three back in the running line, with stablemate Bellmac Kody also from the 10 metre mark going forward immediately the start was effected to park outside the running leader Maidstone Miss, a former Redwood winner.
Gaining a lovely three wide trail home on the back of Xanderxav in the last lap, Paris Pepperell swept to the front on straightening to defeat Glenferrie Dreamer from last by 3.1 metres, with a game Xanderxav .9 metres away in third place. Bred by Geoff Hood and Sonia Treseder at "Pepperell Farm" in the Macedon Ranges, Paris Pepperell raced by Brett Copley chalked up her 8th victory at start number 37.
Coasted ■ Heat Two of the Vicbred Super Series for 2-Y-0 Fillies over 2190 metres at Maryborough went the way of Emma Stewart's Lovelist, making it four from four in a mile rate of 2-02.2. Raced by a large group headed by the Cameron boys, Lovelist (Always A Virgin/Lifeline) driven by Gavin Lang had little difficulty in obtaining the lead from gate six and was never out of second gear, coasting to the wire five metres in advance of Enjay Speedstar which trailed. Shadow Flag finished third after following the pair.
Prevailed ■ Navarre trainer Marnie Bibby always takes her horses to the races in tip top condition and four year old Christian Cullen/Memphis Melody mare Virginia Lightning was a tough winner of the Bendigo Party Hire Pacers Handicap for C1 or better class over 2190 metres at the Maryborough fixture. Stepping safely from barrier five, reinsman Michael Bellman wasted no time in sending Virginia Lightning forward to park outside the old timer Myrniong Panorama which pinged away from the pole. In a slugging finish, Virginia Lightning prevailed .
Wednesday - Shepparton/Bendigo @ Melton, Thursday - Maryborough/Mildura, Friday - Melton, Saturday - Kilmore, Sunday - Ballarat, Monday - Warragul, Tuesday - Bendigo.
Horses To Follow ■ Xbolt, Glenferrie Bunter, Intergalactic, Keep Me Tender, Rosy Ogrady Lombo, Xanderxav, Metaphorically, Virgil Hilts, Apatchy Rebel, Keayang Ebonyrose, WhisperAway, Miss Dilly.
Easy win at Kilmore ■ Orrvale trainer Steven Duffy's professional 4Y-0 McCardle/Nuclearaccelerator gelding Almost El Eagle was an easy victor of the Charles Bell Memorial Pace for C4 & C5 class over 2180 metres at Kilmore on Tuesday June 10. Driven by Greg Sugars, Almost El Eagle had little difficulty in leading from gate four, before coasting to the wire untouched in advance of We Never Say Die which trailed and Classic Icon which followed the pair. The mile rate 1-59.3.
Dad, son enjoy win ■ Bunbatha father and son - John and Matt Newberry snared the Down Under Muscles @ Eldarin Park Trotters Mobile for T1 & T2 class over 1690 metres at Kilmore with honest 6-Y-0 Earl/ Shine On Alisha gelding Just Call Me Earl. Taking a concession for Matt, Just Call Me Earl was sent forward from outside the front line to shadow the well supported pacemaker Pride Of Sundon (gate four) and travelled kindly all of the way. Asked for a supreme effort on straightening, Just Call Me Earl answered the call to score by 5.1 metres from Rosemma (one/two - three wide last lap) and Canadian Dream (one/one) in a mile rate of 2-02.2.
Clear on home turn ■ Melton's Beau Tindale combined with Euroa based reinsman Cameron Maggs to land the City Of Greater Geelong Pace for C0 class over 1609 metres at Geelong on Wednesday with Jet Laag/ Lombo Silhouette gelding Soho Wonder in a rate of 1-58.7. Settling at the tail of the field from the extreme draw, Soho Wonder commenced a three wide forward move racing for the bell to park outside the leader Arts Professor for the final circuit. Surging clear on the home turn, Soho Wonder defied all challengers to record a half neck margin over Idle Jet which trailed the leader easing to follow the winner home on turning, with Domonic John (three back the markers) third.
Lang’s big double ■ Nagambie's Chris Lang has had a great season with his Aldebaran named horses and another of the team - four year old Sundon/Lexie Highlander gelding Aldebaran Seismic scored at Geelong on Wednesday in the Next Trials 7th July Trotters Handicap for T0 & T1 class over 2100 metres. Despite being a trifle slow to begin from the pole, Aldebaran Seismic was able to muster and retain the inside running and after being given an easy time, proved too strong in the run to the wire, defeating My Archie Way which trailed and Mowbray Mates (four back the markers) in a mile rate of 205.1. Lang was to bring up a double when Deam Vacation/Lucky Invasion gelding Master Hugh landed the Corio Waste Management 3-Y-0 Vicbred Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres, accounting for Michaels Mename and Opia in a rate of 2-05.4. ■ Listen to Len Baker on Harness Review, 8pm10pm Mondays, on 97.9 FM, streamed in 979fm.com.au

Trainers ■ The opportunity for private individuals to acquire land in the ‘Knights Court’ release of the trainer allotments has been very well received by trainers, aspiring trainers and investors alike. Some 11of the 18 lots made available in the first stage have been sold with market interest in the remaining lots continuing to be strong. The Club has been to tender on the civil works required to build and BMD Construction have been appointed to undertake these works (predominately roads, design and utility connection) and will commence later this month. Completion is expected by year's e nd, after which purchasers will be able to access their blocks and commence building their own on course training facilities. Man for seasons ■ Talk about a bloke who has been there and done that, I am referring to ABC celebrity, Drew Morphett. One of the nicest blokes in sport, he has a coat of many colours from being a top journalist, an on-camera personality with the ABC for many years. After 48 years in the business he feels he now has the knack of putting across the word of all sport he loves. In that time he has
covered cricket, football and a number of other sports for Aunty. He told me one of his greatest thrills especially in calling cricket at Test Level, was when he was at the microphone when Australia demolished England five-nil in the recent Test Series. Not long after that he was at the Adelaide Oval for a one-dayer between Australia and England that he learned of the honour of receiving the Order of Australia medal. It was one of his proudest moments in a long career, but felt a bit sheepish saying that he hadn't changed the world or saved lives. While he won't admit to following a football team, he just loves

● Congrats a good game. Away from the microphone, Drew and his lovely wife, Kaz, run an agistment property, on the outskirts of the suburbs in West Gippsland. The business is looking after racehorses when they are spelling from racing campaigns. The place is constantly buzzing with vets, farriers, feed trucks and horse transporters. Kaz is a qualified vet nurse, and the property also takes in after-care patientshorses recovering from operations. Among their clients are Peter Moody, Mick Price, Robbie Griffiths, Russell Cameron, Peter Gelagotis and Wendy Kelly. At last count, nine Group One winners have spent time at Cloverdale including, Black Caviar, who came from the sales before she was named, Typhoon Tracy, Moment of Change, and the current sprint champion of the world, . In fact Lankan Rupee, went from being good to sensational, after being gelded at their property. They have taken minor shares in a num-
ber of gallopers hoping for the big day, and although tasting minor success both Kaz and Drew, are dreaming of the big one, maybe a Melbourne Cup or a Derby. After six Olympic Games, Test cricket, AFL football, golf, tennis and a host of other sports, Drew is not thinking of pulling the pin just yet. Why would he? There's too much ahead to look back. - Ted Ryan

The Last Word ■ It is better to look where you are going than to see where you have been. ■ Word fact. In Britain during the 180s, the word ‘pants’ was considered a dirty word. ■ “To believe in one’s dreams to to spend all of one’s life asleep.” - Chinese proverb. ■ Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills at its pupils.
