All happy talk at ‘South Pacific’

● Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Lisa McCune Photo: Kevin Trask ■ Every great Hollywood romantic production of the 1950s and 60s was accompanied by press reports - true or false about the ‘sexual chemistry’ of its leading stars. Hollywood came to Melbourne’s Princess Theatre on Saturday with some enchanted evening for the opening night performance of South Pacific, presented by Opera Australia and John Frost. Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Lisa McCune take flawless starring roles in this Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic, based on the ‘Lincoln Center Theater’ production first performed in New York in 2008. Rhodes’s performances are sponsored by Rex Irwin. A Polynesian group greeted first-nighters at the Princess Theatre on Saturday night, reminding us that the Australian premiere was 60 years ago, on September 13, 1952. South Pacific takes place on two islands in the South Pacific during World War II, with one week’s lapse of time in the storyline between the two acts. The orchestra, led by Vanessa Scammell, assisted by Stephen Gray, struck up for the overture, but the house-full audience turned its gaze to Derryn and Chanel Hinch making their late entrance to the stalls. Hinch had been sending out a Twitter message to the world about Lisa McCune’s husband, Tim Disney, holidaying in Hawaii. The orchestra was in fine tune. It comprises Rob John, Edwina Kayser, Karen Columbine, Claire Tyrell, Stephanie Dean (violins); Shani Williams, Coridwen Davies Viola); Leah Hooper, Fiona Furphy (cello); Duncan Allen (bass); Helen Hardy (flute/piccolo); Susan Batten (oboe/coranlais); Doug Leutchford, Jane Robertson (clarinet); Chris Martin (bassoon); Nichole Dixon, Sebastian Dunn, Toby Frost (horn); Shane Gillard, Daniel Beasy, Patrick McMullin (trumpet); Ian Bell, Joe O’Callaghan (trombone); Alex Hurst (tuba); Tim Hook (percussion); and Delyth Stafford (harp). The terrace of Emile De Becque’s plantation house sets the first scene for the first five of the show’s 15 songs. Ensign Nellie Forbush (McCune) and De Becque (Rhodes) delighted the audience with Twin Soliloquies. The second scene, on another part of the island, sees the Seabees sing Bloody Mary, introducing the character played so well by Kate Ceberano, who strikes hot with Bali Hai. Nellie and the nurses beltg out I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair. Cable (Daniel Koek) delights with Younger Than Springtime. After interval, highlights included Happy Talk as the cast act out a performance of The Thanksgiving Follies. A third reprise of Some Echanted Evening precedes a big finale. Mention should be given to Eddie Perfect who plays the funny role of Luther Billis. John O’May, a Melbourne favourite, appears as Captain Brackett. What a cast! ■ Jon Finlayson one of Australia's actors and performers has passed away. Jon began his show business career in The Australian Boys Choir. At the age of nine he was allowed to see the night time performance at the Tivoli Theatre and finished up onstage with Roy Rene Mo, sitting in a pram, playing a ‘baby’ in a comedy sketch. Jon worked in theatre productions and became a regular on the Channel Seven children's show with Brian Naylor and Madeleine Burke. Jon was one of the original writers for The Mavis Bramston Show in the early 1960s. He produced and directed a popular cabaret act titled The Glitter Sisters. Jon Finlayson was seen internationally in two popular television series. Jon had not enjoyed the best of health in recent years and retired to live a quiet life in the country. He will be sadly missed. - Kevin Trask

● Jon Finlayson ■ Melbourne actor Jon Finlayson died last week at St Vincent’s Hospital, after suffering from prostate cancer. Jon Finlayson has been in show business from the age of eight. He started his professional theatrical life as a boy soprano with the Australian Boys’ Choir and has been actively involved in professional theatre since. He worked as a child radio actor, musical comedy and revue performer, actor, writer for stage, radio and television, director, and producer. Jon Finlayson’s TV credits included Snowy River, Neighbours, The Zoo Family, Homicide, The Last Of The Australians, Division 4, Matlock Police and Cash and Company. His CV also included Hey You, The Long Arm, Ryan, Alvin Purple, Alvin Rides Again, The Great McCarthy, The Sentimental Bloke, Mad Dog Morgan, Sky Ways, Lonely Hearts, Skin Deep, The Magic Show, My First Wife, Evil Angels, Darlings Of The Gods, Boys From The Bush, Newlyweds and The Inner Sanctuary. He also wrote material for the satirical comedy, The Mavis Bramston Show. Actress Carole Raye says the name Mavis Bramston was suggested by Jon, based on a Melbourne theatre tradition. ‘Finno’ was renowned as a ranconteur. His Sunday soirees, when he entertained visiting and local showbiz folk, were legendary. He baked, mixed drinks, carved ham, and staged these events with great flair. In latter years, he lived reclusively in the Hastings area. Jon Finlayson was brother of Bruce, and Rhonda (dec); son of Clorine and Ronald (dec). He was uncle of Alexandra and Zoe.

■ Full Force Media, a newly formed public relations company, will carry out PR and media liaison for the 2013 Tamworth Country Music Festival. Jill Stewart is the PR brains behind Full Force Media and comes from a music background having managed some of Australia's high profile country acts. ● Brigitte Duclos ■ It was not so long ago that Melbourne radio station managers would run a mile if potential presenters mentioned they were represented by managers. The radio station chiefs would refuse to deal with ‘middlemen’, fearful that their companies would be hit harder, to pay more on salary packages and benefits. Things have changed. It began a years back in Melbourne when Neil Mitchell’s contract negotiations were handled by his personal manager, Tony Beddison. Beddison is a powerful man about town, and could hardly be snubbed. He is Chairman of the Royal Children’s Hospital. 3AW-Magic 1278 are the radio partners for the RCH Good Friday Appeal.

Directed by Madonna, With fine performances and production design, W.E. has many impressive moments, most notably the abdication of the throne by King Edward VIII, but is overall hampered by a loss of direction, conviction and sluggishness. Sadly, there's a genuinely superb film in here, just give me a pair of scissors and I'll prove it. FILM: IRON SKY: Cast: Udo Kier, Julia Dietze, Peta Sergeant. Genre: Science Fiction. Year: 2012. Rating: M. Running Time: 89 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***1/2 Verdict: With a plot that has the Nazis set up a secret base on the moon in 1945 and where they hide out and plan to return to power in 2018 and invade Earth, then it has to be seen to be believed. Iron Sky is a delightful, tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top science fiction romp that comes across like a 1950's Saturday matinee serial, only the special effects are more impressive, and just as enjoyable. Filmed on a small budget, this is more entertaining than many $200 million epics out there, so bring on the sequel. FILM: THE HUNGER GAMES: Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth. Genre: Action/Thriller. Year: 2012. Rating: M. Running Time: 142 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ** Verdict: Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from its twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, a volunteer takes her younger sister's place for the latest match. Take a good sprinkle of Rollerball (1975), a strong dash of Running Man (1987) and truck load of Battle Royale (2000) and you have this drab and plodding overlong affair that seriously lacks the shear tension, intensity, emotion and thrills that the three films mentioned deliver in spades, most notably the powerful and unrelenting Battle Royale, which is everything The Hunger Games should have been, but isn't ... by a long shot!

A murderer is amongst us and it’s up to the residents to discover who it is before another victim is found. The Lichtenstein Nursing Home Massacre weaves identity theft, classical film genres and famous murders to tell its twisted and gruesome tale. Demented puppets lull the audience into a false sense of safety while posing the question: who is actually pulling the strings of this macabre adventure? Are all these deaths just another stunt to divert our attention from the real issues once again? The Lichtenstein Nursing Home Massacre follows in the rich tradition and black comedy of ‘Punch and Judy’, using puppetry and humour to explore the politics and macabre of the world around us. Trained by Brent Lilley in Melton and driven by Bob Butt, Zedalite from gate two was able to stride past his stablemate Consica shortly after the start and was never headed in accounting for Rubon Brown off a three wide trail last lap and Hakuna Sunset which raced in the open. The mile rate 2-03.9. A 4-Y-0 gelded son of Zooma and Remembrance Day, Zedalite bred and raced by David Davidson has fronted the starter on 35 occasions for 10 wins.

In one act ■ Talented 4-Y-0 Goodboytruscott/Truscott Photo gelding Loveyougoodboy part-owned and bred by Chris Angove, made a one act affair of the Bi-Rite Electrical Maryborough Trotters Handicap for T1 or better class in a rate of 2-05.9. Driven by Ararat based Michael Bellman, Loveyougoodboy from the pole led throughout to record a 5-metre victory in advance of Miss Eliza which trailed, with Button Brigade (three wide trail last lap) third. It was Loveyougoodboy's eighth victory in 31 outings.

His third ■ Keystone Salute/Clare 6-Y-0 gelding Clarrie Stone was the victor of the Yankee Spider At Bayunga Lodge Trotters Handicap for T1 or better class, much to the delight of owner Justine Graham wife of trainer/driver Ross who races the horse on lease from breeders Tony Britt and Helen Sweeney. Given the run of the race from barrier three following the pacemaker Apollorita which led from the second line, Clarrie Stone when taken away from the markers on straightening, finished best to score by a half neck in 2-05.3 over Apollorita, with Apollo Nine third after trailing the pair, registering his third success in 34 race appearances.

Morgan has a smart 4-Y0 gelding by the name of Advance To Go which landed the Rosehill Stud Pace for C1 class over 2190 metres at Mary-borough. Driven by Gavin Lang, Advance To Go (Our Sir Vancelot/Rosie Jo) led out from gate four, before being restrained to take a trail on the free running Darcy Tee. Enjoying the run of the race, Advance To Go was eased to the outside on the final bend and finished best to score from Conflict Of Interest (three wide last lap) and Gumdrops from near last in a rate of 1-59.7.

Eventually crossing at the bell, Spiral Jet appeared to be a sitting target for those who had received easier runs including the favourite Laughing Holme and the well supported Jonark May (one/one and one/two) racing for the bell. Left in the open for the final circuit, Laughing Holme switched down to the sprint lane on turning and immediately challenged Spiral Jet, looking to gain the upper hand narrowly. Refusing to give in, Spiral Jet rallied in the shadows of the post to score by a nose in a tricky finish, with Jonark May a disappointing third. The mile rate 1-57.5.

RACING CLUB KICKING GOALS ■ The Mornington Racing Club is gearing up a great day on Footy Grand Final Day with a big meeting at their picturesque track. The meeting is the only TAB one being run in Victoria. Since starting up running on the same day as the big footy match, it has proved a winner for everyone who loves both sports. The Club has arranged plenty of action not only on the track, but off. It's likely that there will be at least eight races on the program, with as usual a number of our top trainers giving some of their spring hopes a hit out. With good fields assured, the Club is looking to having a good crowd attending, given reasonable weather conditions. There will be TVs showing all in the action of the Grand Final from the MCG to catch all the action, plus bars will be open and plenty of entertainment for the young ones. Mornington is one of the nicest courses you could ever see, with its great viewing points and amenities, and only an hour from the city or outlying suburbs like mine near Warrandyte. At this stage the club may be looking at having a Fashion on the Field Day for both genders young and old. The Club has beautiful reception rooms where you can purchase superb meals topped off with a great range of beers and wines. So even if you or not a football fan or a racegoer, head down to Mornington for a great day out.

Caulfield Guineas ■ This year's Caulfield Guineas is shaping up as yet another Classic with some of our best three-year olds getting ready to battle it out for the total prizemoney of over a million dollars. The latest market from the Eskander camp at Betstar naturally has the unbeaten Sydney champion, Pierro, who has notched up seven wins from as many starts including the Golden Slipper and the Sires Produce in Sydney, as a short priced favourite. Betstar feels the even money on offer is a good bet as they are positive you won't get anywhere that on Guineas day, if everything goes to plan. Prepared by Hall Of Fame trainer, Gai Waterhouse, he resumed with a dominant win first up, to notch up number seven. The two that finished behind him are pretty smart too. Under the care of leading Sydney trainer, Anthony Cummings, both Your Song, who ran second to Pierro, and Ninth Legion, fourth, both ran very well. Another of Gai Waterhouse's team, Kabayan, who ran well at Caulfield recently is on the second line, with stablemate, Proisir, also trained by Gai, but both are at double figures. On the next line is the half-brother to Black Caviar, All Too Hard, who hasn't had things go his way is his

last couple of runs, missing the start, which unfortunately is one of his traits. If he can produce his best on the day, he would be a chance, but the favourite is all class. The Peter Snowden trained, Epaulette, is a $17 chance, and the rest are out the gate.

The deal will also see a change to eligibility conditions for the Magic Million Race Series, opening up the way in 2013 to all Magic Millions yearling sales graduates and 3YOs in 2014, subject of a late entry. ■ The fans got their money’s worth with the two semi-finals. Fremantle jumped Adelaide with four early goals and led until the 17.20 min. mark of the third quarter. It was a slogging effort by the Crows to fight back even though they enjoyed the home ground and crowd advantage. It took precisely 72 minutes to accomplish. You know my thoughts on the ridiculous amounts of money being shelved out to a handful of coaches and players, including Ross Lyon’s alleged $1.6m per season for four years.
