VALE JON FINLAYSON Kevin Trask pays tribute

All happy talk at ‘South Pacific’

● Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Lisa McCune Photo: Kevin Trask ■ Every great Hollywood romantic production of the 1950s and 60s was accompanied by press reports - true or false about the ‘sexual chemistry’ of its leading stars. Hollywood came to Melbourne’s Princess Theatre on Saturday with some enchanted evening for the opening night performance of South Pacific, presented by Opera Australia and John Frost. Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Lisa McCune take flawless starring roles in this Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic, based on the ‘Lincoln Center Theater’ production first performed in New York in 2008. Rhodes’s performances are sponsored by Rex Irwin. A Polynesian group greeted first-nighters at the Princess Theatre on Saturday night, reminding us that the Australian premiere was 60 years ago, on September 13, 1952. South Pacific takes place on two islands in the South Pacific during World War II, with one week’s lapse of time in the storyline between the two acts. The orchestra, led by Vanessa Scammell, assisted by Stephen Gray, struck up for the overture, but the house-full audience turned its gaze to Derryn and Chanel Hinch making their late entrance to the stalls. Hinch had been sending out a Twitter message to the world about Lisa McCune’s husband, Tim Disney, holidaying in Hawaii. The orchestra was in fine tune. It comprises Rob John, Edwina Kayser, Karen Columbine, Claire Tyrell, Stephanie Dean (violins); Shani Williams, Coridwen Davies Viola); Leah Hooper, Fiona Furphy (cello); Duncan Allen (bass); Helen Hardy (flute/piccolo); Susan Batten (oboe/coranlais); Doug Leutchford, Jane Robertson (clarinet); Chris Martin (bassoon); Nichole Dixon, Sebastian Dunn, Toby Frost (horn); Shane Gillard, Daniel Beasy, Patrick McMullin (trumpet); Ian Bell, Joe O’Callaghan (trombone); Alex Hurst (tuba); Tim Hook (percussion); and Delyth Stafford (harp). The terrace of Emile De Becque’s plantation house sets the first scene for the first five of the show’s 15 songs. Ensign Nellie Forbush (McCune) and De Becque (Rhodes) delighted the audience with Twin Soliloquies. The second scene, on another part of the island, sees the Seabees sing Bloody Mary, introducing the character played so well by Kate Ceberano, who strikes hot with Bali Hai. Nellie and the nurses beltg out I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair. Cable (Daniel Koek) delights with Younger Than Springtime. After interval, highlights included Happy Talk as the cast act out a performance of The Thanksgiving Follies. A third reprise of Some Echanted Evening precedes a big finale. Mention should be given to Eddie Perfect who plays the funny role of Luther Billis. John O’May, a Melbourne favourite, appears as Captain Brackett. What a cast! Members include John Xintavelonis (Stewpot), Jeremy Stanford (Harbison), Rowan Witt (Professor) and Celina Yuen (Liat) Turn To Page 39

■ Jon Finlayson one of Australia's actors and performers has passed away. Jon began his show business career in The Australian Boys Choir. At the age of nine he was allowed to see the night time performance at the Tivoli Theatre and finished up onstage with Roy Rene Mo, sitting in a pram, playing a ‘baby’ in a comedy sketch. Jon worked in theatre productions and became a regular on the Channel Seven children's show with Brian Naylor and Madeleine Burke. Jon was one of the original writers for The Mavis Bramston Show in the early 1960s. He produced and directed a popular cabaret act titled The Glitter Sisters. Jon Finlayson was seen internationally in two popular television series. Jon had not enjoyed the best of health in recent years and retired to live a quiet life in the country. He will be sadly missed. - Kevin Trask

● Jon Finlayson ■ Melbourne actor Jon Finlayson died last week at St Vincent’s Hospital, after suffering from prostate cancer. Jon Finlayson has been in show business from the age of eight. He started his professional theatrical life as a boy soprano with the Australian Boys’ Choir and has been actively involved in professional theatre since. He worked as a child radio actor, musical comedy and revue performer, actor, writer for stage, radio and television, director, and producer. Jon Finlayson’s TV credits included Snowy River, Neighbours, The Zoo Family, Homicide, The Last Of The Australians, Division 4, Matlock Police and Cash and Company. His CV also included Hey You, The Long Arm, Ryan, Alvin Purple, Alvin Rides Again, The Great McCarthy, The Sentimental Bloke, Mad Dog Morgan, Sky Ways, Lonely Hearts, Skin Deep, The Magic Show, My First Wife, Evil Angels, Darlings Of The Gods, Boys From The Bush, Newlyweds and The Inner Sanctuary. He also wrote material for the satirical comedy, The Mavis Bramston Show. Actress Carole Raye says the name Mavis Bramston was suggested by Jon, based on a Melbourne theatre tradition. ‘Finno’ was renowned as a ranconteur. His Sunday soirees, when he entertained visiting and local showbiz folk, were legendary. He baked, mixed drinks, carved ham, and staged these events with great flair. In latter years, he lived reclusively in the Hastings area. Jon Finlayson was brother of Bruce, and Rhonda (dec); son of Clorine and Ronald (dec). He was uncle of Alexandra and Zoe.

● Marcus Viskich and Natasha Rodrigues in the Savoy Opera Company's production of Iolanthe, opening on October 6. Photo: Julie Houghton ■ The Savoy Opera Company returns to the Alexander Theatre, Clayton with Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe, for a strictly limited season commencing October 6. This classic satire pokes fun at politics - both of the gender and government variety - and is as fresh, funny and relevant today as when it was first unveiled at London's Savoy Theatre. What happens when the laws of Fairyland are broken and mortals must compete with fairies to rule society? Find out and enjoy the humour and topsy turvy logic that have made Iolanthe a favourite with audiences for generations. Savoy Opera's show is directed by Stee Dixon, conducted by Robert Dora, with musical preparation by David Campbell. The talented cast includes promising newcomers Cristina Russo and Nicholas Jensen as Phyllis and Strephon, the star crossed lovers ... and among the vivacious fairy cohorts is the Melbourne Observer's Julie Houghton! Three performances only include Saturday, October 6 at 2pm and 8pm and Saturday, October 13 at 2pm at the Alexander Theatre, Monash University, Clayton. ● Brigitte Duclos ■ It was not so long ago that Melbourne radio station managers would run a mile if potential presenters mentioned they were represented by managers. The radio station chiefs would refuse to deal with ‘middlemen’, fearful that their companies would be hit harder, to pay more on salary packages and benefits. Things have changed. It began a years back in Melbourne when Neil Mitchell’s contract negotiations were handled by his personal manager, Tony Beddison. Beddison is a powerful man about town, and could hardly be snubbed. He is Chairman of the Royal Children’s Hospital. 3AW-Magic 1278 are the radio partners for the RCH Good Friday Appeal.

3AW gossip ■ Neil Mitchell refers to his Friday programs as ‘People’s Day’. Does this mean the four other days are not people’s days? ■ Was that 3AW station manager Shane Healy (pictured below) spotted having lunch at The Botanical with former Fairfax Radio boss Graham Mott, and Philip Brady? ■ Is it true that 3AW-Magic 1278 staffers refer to Healy by the nickname of ‘Monsignor’?

● Brett Ludeman as Hamlet in Red Stitch Theatre’s production of Wittenberg. Photo: Sarah Walker ■ Red Stitch Actors Theatre presents the Australian premiere of Wittenberg from October 5-November 3, at Rear 2 Chapel St, St Kilda. This playful contemporary drama is written by David Davalos and directed by Jane Montgomery Griffiths. An unlikely convergence of characters – Faustus, Luther and Hamlet – are plonked into the one place and time, resulting in a ‘tragical-comical-historical’ play in two acts. In Davalos’ Wittenberg, it is 1517 and Prince Hamlet, a student at Wittenberg University, finds himself caught between the ideological paradoxes of his professors, Faustus and Luther, vying for influence over the university’s star student. What ensues is an epic and booze-infused tug of war between Faustus’ command to question everything and Luther's insistence that God is always the answer in a highly entertaining exploration of Reason versus Faith. TheatrePeople.com.au says: “It's about to happen again; like Les Miserables before it, Phanton Of The Opera is set to be flogged within an inch of its life by most of the companies around Melbourne (CLOC, Windmill and Babirra have already announced their productions).”

Vitriolic remarks about 3AW commentator John-Michael Howson have been sent anonymously to the website, Theatre People, says its editor Chris Hughes. “To the person who keeps sending us messages regarding comments made on 3AW by John Michael Howson ... We'd be happy to post your comments IF you provide your real name. At it stands, you've just sent us a bunch of anonymous comments (and pretty nasty ones at that). “It's a but rich to accuse us of being ‘afraid’ to post your vitriol when you yourself refuse to stand behind your own comments. If you feel so strongly about it, stand up and be counted. We will support YOU, but we will not support anonymous sniper attacks from people hiding behind the veil of anonymity.”

Roy and H.G. are returning to the radio on Grand Final day with a promise, reports Greg Newman of Jocks Journal. They will bring their Festival of the Boot to ABC News Radio for both the AFL Grand Final on September 29 and the NRL season finale the following night.

What’s Hot and What’s Not On DVDs and Blu-Ray

● Bond 50: Celebrating 50 blockbuster years of British super secret agent James Bond 007 with one of the most spectacular DVD and Blu-ray releases of all time. FILM: BOND 50 (007) Box Set: Cast: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan. Genre: Action/Thriller. Year: Assorted Years. Rating: TBA. Running Time: Assorted Running Times. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***** Verdict: A celebration of 50 years of James Bond, this epic 22 Disc DVD box set and 23 Disc Blu-ray box set release of all the James Bond 007 blockbuster adventures from Dr. No to Quantum of Solace is one of the most impressive and highly anticipated releases of all time, and a must for any collection. Beautifully restored and remastered in high definition each box set also contains over 130 hours of bonus features including Documentaries, Featurettes, Interviews, Photo's, Poster Art, Trailers and much more. Highly Recommended! FILM: W.E: Cast: Abbie Cornish, James D'Arcy, Oscar Isaac. Genre: Drama. Year: 2011. Rating: M. Running Time: 113 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **1/2 Verdict: A beautifully filmed but muddled retelling of the affair between King Edward VIII and American Wallis Simpson, and a contemporary parallel romance between a married woman and a Russian security guard. Directed by Madonna, With fine performances and production design, W.E. has many impressive moments, most notably the abdication of the throne by King Edward VIII, but is overall hampered by a loss of direction, conviction and sluggishness. Sadly, there's a genuinely superb film in here, just give me a pair of scissors and I'll prove it. FILM: IRON SKY: Cast: Udo Kier, Julia Dietze, Peta Sergeant. Genre: Science Fiction. Year: 2012. Rating: M. Running Time: 89 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***1/2 Verdict: With a plot that has the Nazis set up a secret base on the moon in 1945 and where they hide out and plan to return to power in 2018 and invade Earth, then it has to be seen to be believed. Iron Sky is a delightful, tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top science fiction romp that comes across like a 1950's Saturday matinee serial, only the special effects are more impressive, and just as enjoyable. Filmed on a small budget, this is more entertaining than many $200 million epics out there, so bring on the sequel. FILM: THE HUNGER GAMES: Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth. Genre: Action/Thriller. Year: 2012. Rating: M. Running Time: 142 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ** Verdict: Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from its twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, a volunteer takes her younger sister's place for the latest match. Take a good sprinkle of Rollerball (1975), a strong dash of Running Man (1987) and truck load of Battle Royale (2000) and you have this drab and plodding overlong affair that seriously lacks the shear tension, intensity, emotion and thrills that the three films mentioned deliver in spades, most notably the powerful and unrelenting Battle Royale, which is everything The Hunger Games should have been, but isn't ... by a long shot!

Observer Showbiz INDEPENDENT THEATRE ■ La Mama Theatre presents The Lichtenstein Nursing Home Massacre from September 27-October 7 at 205 Faraday St, Carlton. Something is amiss in the Lichtenstein Nursing Home. Sitting high in the misty mountains, unexpected, gruesome (and sometimes absurd) deaths keep occurring. A murderer is amongst us and it’s up to the residents to discover who it is before another victim is found. The Lichtenstein Nursing Home Massacre weaves identity theft, classical film genres and famous murders to tell its twisted and gruesome tale. Demented puppets lull the audience into a false sense of safety while posing the question: who is actually pulling the strings of this macabre adventure? Are all these deaths just another stunt to divert our attention from the real issues once again? The Lichtenstein Nursing Home Massacre follows in the rich tradition and black comedy of ‘Punch and Judy’, using puppetry and humour to explore the politics and macabre of the world around us. Supplied with miniature binoculars, the audience is invited to lean in, laugh loudly and reflect upon their own larger world. Staged by Lemony S Puppet Theatre and directed by Sarah Kriegler, the show will be performed by Jacob Williams, Kristian Bagin and Tim Denton. Performances: September 27 – October 7 Venue: La Mama Theatre, 205 Faraday St Carlton Tickets: $25 Full | $15 Conc. Bookings: 9347 6142 or www.lamama.com.au

● Daniel Komesaroff and Clary Riven and are romantic co-stars in CLOC Musical Theatre’s All Shook Up, opening on October 5 at the National Theatre, St Kilda. Photo: Richard Crompton ■ CLOC Musical Theatre’s production of the musical All Shook Up, opens at the National Theatre, St Kilda on Friday, October 5 and runs until October 20. Set in the 1950s, this new musical is based around the songs of Elvis Presley, featuring nearly 30 of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s biggest hits woven into a story of mistaken identity, missed up romance and true love. It is not the first time Clary Riven and Daniel Komesaroff have been paired as romantic co-stars, but this is the first occasion outside of a school production. ● Monique Phillips in Boom! at Theatre Works ■ Gearstick Theatre presents Boom! from October 9-13 at Theatre Works, 14 Acland St, St. Kilda as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Written by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb and directed by Michael Mitchell, the story tells of a grad student's online personal ad luring a mysterious journalism student to his subterranean research lab under the pretence of an evening of "no strings attached" sex. But when a major global catastrophic event strikes the planet, their date takes on evolutionary significance and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Will they survive? What about the fish in the tank? And who is that woman pulling levers and playing the timpani? An epic and intimate comedy that spans over billions of years, boom explores the influences of fate versus randomness in the course of one's life, and life as we know it on the planet. Gearstick Theatre is a Wagga based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to creating professional theatre for regional audiences. Final meeting at Nyah ■ An era came to an end on Thursday September 13, when the Nyah Harness Racing Club held its final race meeting prior to relocating to Swan Hill where an all new track has been constructed inside the racecourse. Having raced at Nyah since December 18, 1965, a terrific crowd turned out to say farewell and as usual, racing was exciting throughout the evening. Woorinen (Swan Hill) owner/trainer Joe Costa snared the opening event - the Goodtime Lodge Pace for C0 class over 1765 metres with 4-Y-0 Life Sign/ Edna June gelding Life Of Ted. Driven by Michael Bellman, Life Of Ted from outside the front row began with a wing on every foot to clear the field easily, before being restrained to follow the well backed Starscream. Using the sprint lane, Life Of Ted dashed to the front in the shadows of the post to overhaul Starscream in a rate of 2-02.7, with Chickataw (five wide home turn from last) third. The Costa stable were to land a double when 6Y-0 Christian Cullen/Paula's Way gelding Uncle Wingnut trained by son Vince, scored in a thrilling Woodlands Stud Pace for C3 to C5 class over 1765 metres, again with Mick Bellman in the sulky. Unable to head off the pole marker Bevstuanmarylou from outside the front row, Uncle Wingnut raced in the open throughout, before outstaying his rivals in nosing out Another President (one/one - three wide home turn), with Jordylan using the sprint lane from three back in the moving lane dead-heating with No Arkin Up (four wide home turn from last) for third. The mile rate 2-00.8.

Won last race ever ■ Gillieston (Tatura) trainer Russ Thomson and Tooleen based reinsman Nigel Milne will enter the record books after winning the last ever race held at Nyah, when 5-Y-0 Yankee Paco/Fionas Flair mare Dream Of Flair scored in the Empire Stallions Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2570 metres. Bred by Kevin and Faye Waller and raced by close friends Terry and Julie White who would have been ‘over the moon’ with the victory, Dream Of Flair led throughout from barrier four, easily accounting for Apache Speed which galloped away before moving to be one/one at the bell, with the favourite Miss Eliza third after becoming hopelessly pocketed at the bell. The mile rate a pedestrian 2-12.3.

Memories of first night ■ Without doubt the ‘run of the night’ at Nyah was by 4-Y-0 Our Sir Vancelot/Denver Grace gelding Denverlot in the Aldebaran Park Pace for C0 class over 2170 metres. Trained at Junortoun by Bruce Morgan who actually was successful on the opening night of Nyah when based in the area, Denverlot with Daryl Douglas in the sulky galloped away hopelessly from gate five giving away almost 70 metres, with the well backed Me Cobber leading from gate four. Gradually making ground to be four back the markers racing for the bell, Denverlot after moving around a galloping Fugitive Man in the last lap which trailed the leader, was eased to the outside on straightening, running on strongly to score by 2.8 metres in a rate of 2-06.6 over Me Cobber and a death-seating Z Hurricane.

Great meeting for locals ■ Friday night's Tabcorp Park meeting was a good one for Melton, with five of the eleven winners coming from the area. Parwan's Jodi Quinlan brought up a hat-trick of wins with revitalized 10-Y-0 Keystone Salute/Cooma Lindy gelding Sports Fantasy taking the Schweppes Trotters Handicap for TM0 or better class over 2240 metres much to the delight of Ballarat owner/breeder Stephen Hornsby. Spending most of the race one/one from the 10 metre mark, Sports Fantasy three wide on the final bend finished best to score from Maori Vacation along the sprint lane off the back of the leader Motu Young Jacob, with Jarvsofaks (three back the markers) also using the sprint lane for third. The mile rate 2-05.2.

TROTTERS ON SHOW IN CENTRAL VIC. ■ Maryborough in Central Victoria - home of ‘The Redwood Classic’ conducted an entertaining race card on Monday highlighted by three squaregaiting events, all over 2190 metres. The first to get under way was the Down Under Muscles At Eldarin Park Trotters Mobile in which former top juvenile Zedalite scored. Trained by Brent Lilley in Melton and driven by Bob Butt, Zedalite from gate two was able to stride past his stablemate Consica shortly after the start and was never headed in accounting for Rubon Brown off a three wide trail last lap and Hakuna Sunset which raced in the open. The mile rate 2-03.9. A 4-Y-0 gelded son of Zooma and Remembrance Day, Zedalite bred and raced by David Davidson has fronted the starter on 35 occasions for 10 wins.

In one act ■ Talented 4-Y-0 Goodboytruscott/Truscott Photo gelding Loveyougoodboy part-owned and bred by Chris Angove, made a one act affair of the Bi-Rite Electrical Maryborough Trotters Handicap for T1 or better class in a rate of 2-05.9. Driven by Ararat based Michael Bellman, Loveyougoodboy from the pole led throughout to record a 5-metre victory in advance of Miss Eliza which trailed, with Button Brigade (three wide trail last lap) third. It was Loveyougoodboy's eighth victory in 31 outings.

His third ■ Keystone Salute/Clare 6-Y-0 gelding Clarrie Stone was the victor of the Yankee Spider At Bayunga Lodge Trotters Handicap for T1 or better class, much to the delight of owner Justine Graham wife of trainer/driver Ross who races the horse on lease from breeders Tony Britt and Helen Sweeney. Given the run of the race from barrier three following the pacemaker Apollorita which led from the second line, Clarrie Stone when taken away from the markers on straightening, finished best to score by a half neck in 2-05.3 over Apollorita, with Apollo Nine third after trailing the pair, registering his third success in 34 race appearances.

Morgan has a smart 4-Y0 gelding by the name of Advance To Go which landed the Rosehill Stud Pace for C1 class over 2190 metres at Mary-borough. Driven by Gavin Lang, Advance To Go (Our Sir Vancelot/Rosie Jo) led out from gate four, before being restrained to take a trail on the free running Darcy Tee. Enjoying the run of the race, Advance To Go was eased to the outside on the final bend and finished best to score from Conflict Of Interest (three wide last lap) and Gumdrops from near last in a rate of 1-59.7.

Eventually crossing at the bell, Spiral Jet appeared to be a sitting target for those who had received easier runs including the favourite Laughing Holme and the well supported Jonark May (one/one and one/two) racing for the bell. Left in the open for the final circuit, Laughing Holme switched down to the sprint lane on turning and immediately challenged Spiral Jet, looking to gain the upper hand narrowly. Refusing to give in, Spiral Jet rallied in the shadows of the post to score by a nose in a tricky finish, with Jonark May a disappointing third. The mile rate 1-57.5.

No trouble

Driven hard

■ Shelbourne trainer Larry Eastman combined with Rockbank based reinsman Damian Wilson to snare the Mountain View Stud Pace for C0 class over 2190 metres at Mary-borough with Northern Luck/ Decethree Lombo 4-Y-0 mare Lombo Cloud Nine. Starting from gate two, Lombo Cloud Nine was able to cross With Gusto inside her shortly after the start and was untroubled to lead throughout, accounting for the heavily supported favourite The Midnight Reign which raced outside her from the bell, with Umi (one/one) third. The mile rate 2-01.8.

Spiral Jet ■ Six year old Jet Laag/ Spiral Staircase gelding Spiral Jet went like one in taking out the Empire Stallions Pace for C2 class over 1690 metres at Shepparton on Wednesday September 11. Trained at Kilmore by Rita Burnett, Spiral Jet taking a concession for daughter Monique from outside the front row made a valiant attempt to lead, however Our Coolkat (Paul Diebert) inside him refused to relinquish, leaving Spiral Jet in the open.

■ It was a huge night for the Burnett and Weidenbach family as Rita's sister and brotherin-law - Rosie and Paul Weidenbach combined to land the Hunter Rural Pace for C0 class over 2190 metres with Majestic Bono, a 5-Y-0 entire byMcArdlefromAltrustic. A winner at Cambridge on June 10, 2010, Majestic Bono making his 21st appearance at the races led out from gate three, before easing to trail Sopranos Fury (gate four) whose driver Joe Borg wanted the front running at all cost. Easing away from the inside on the home turn, Majestic Bono driven hard prevailed in a rate of 2-03.6, defeating Life Long Lombo (three wide last lap from last) and Pretty Peggy Sue (three back the markers).

Easy win ■ David Aiken's smart Art Major/Vangold 4-Y0 entire Cold Major bred and raced by Queensland mining magnate Clive Palmer, had an easy victory in the Quest Shepparton Pace for C1 class over 2190 metres, leading for most of the journey to score from a death-seating Light In Every Day and Lifes A Lombo (three back the markers) in a rate of 200.2.

■ Adam Kelly and Gavin Lang chalked up a double with Talaspring saluting the judge in the TAB.Com.Au Pace for M2 to M4 class over 1720 metres and Victors Delight the Harness Breeders (Vic) Blossom Lady for M0 to M3 class (mares) over 2240 metres. Talaspring (Badlands Hanover/Spring Thaw) finished full of running out wide from last to nose out Composed in 1-53.4, with In Monaco third after leading, while Victors Delight (Bettors Delight/Victor Supreme) trapped wide from outside the front row moved to park outside the pacemaker Highview Ebony, before outstaying her rivals in accounting for Highview Ebony and Miss Trickin Lombo in a rate of 1-58.3.

It’s a dead heat! ■ John Justice snared half the prize in the Petstock 4-Y-0 Pace over 1720 metres, when Falcon Seelster/ Jennifer Topez gelding Cromac Jamie dead-heated with an in-form Whata Punt in a rate of 1-55.1. Coming from back in the field, Cromac Johnny very wide on the final bend ran on gamely to lunge at a death-seating Whata Punt on the post, with the judge unable to separate the pair. Born Again Sassy finished third.

Severely checked ■ Parwan trainer George Freeman's Village Jasper/Claire Lane 5-Y-0 mare Claire Jasper did a big job to land the TAB.Com.Au Pacers Handicap for C1 or better class over 2240 metres. Driven as usual by Jason Hackett, Claire Jasper from the 10 metre mark was severly checked shortly after the start losing valuable ground, with Loving Life Lombo taking over from Valiant Lustre. Gradually making ground to be one/one at the bell following All Honour, Claire Jasper ran home strongly to defeat All Honour in a rate of 2-02.4, with the roughie Myrniong Panorama third.

Off to Swan Hill ■ All roads will lead to Swan Hill on Saturday October 20, when the new track opens featuring the $30,000 Nyah Pacing Cup and the $12,000 Nyah Trotters Cup.

RACING CLUB KICKING GOALS ■ The Mornington Racing Club is gearing up a great day on Footy Grand Final Day with a big meeting at their picturesque track. The meeting is the only TAB one being run in Victoria. Since starting up running on the same day as the big footy match, it has proved a winner for everyone who loves both sports. The Club has arranged plenty of action not only on the track, but off. It's likely that there will be at least eight races on the program, with as usual a number of our top trainers giving some of their spring hopes a hit out. With good fields assured, the Club is looking to having a good crowd attending, given reasonable weather conditions. There will be TVs showing all in the action of the Grand Final from the MCG to catch all the action, plus bars will be open and plenty of entertainment for the young ones. Mornington is one of the nicest courses you could ever see, with its great viewing points and amenities, and only an hour from the city or outlying suburbs like mine near Warrandyte. At this stage the club may be looking at having a Fashion on the Field Day for both genders young and old. The Club has beautiful reception rooms where you can purchase superb meals topped off with a great range of beers and wines. So even if you or not a football fan or a racegoer, head down to Mornington for a great day out.

Caulfield Guineas ■ This year's Caulfield Guineas is shaping up as yet another Classic with some of our best three-year olds getting ready to battle it out for the total prizemoney of over a million dollars. Seventy-seven first acceptances have been received for the coveted event to be run at Caulfield on the first day of the Melbourne Racing

Club's first day of their Spring carnival. All up, more tyhan a million dollars will be distributed to those good enough to fill the placings and otherwise. The latest market from the Eskander camp at Betstar naturally has the unbeaten Sydney champion, Pierro, who has notched up seven wins from as many starts including the Golden Slipper and the Sires Produce in Sydney, as a short priced favourite. Betstar feels the even money on offer is a good bet as they are positive you won't get anywhere that on Guineas day, if everything goes to plan. Prepared by Hall Of Fame trainer, Gai Waterhouse, he resumed with a dominant win first up, to notch up number seven. The two that finished behind him are pretty smart too. Under the care of leading Sydney trainer, Anthony Cummings, both Your Song, who ran second to Pierro, and Ninth Legion, fourth, both ran very well. Another of Gai Waterhouse's team, Kabayan, who ran well at Caulfield recently is on the second line, with stablemate, Proisir, also trained by Gai, but both are at double figures. On the next line is the half-brother to Black Caviar, All Too Hard, who hasn't had things go his way is his

last couple of runs, missing the start, which unfortunately is one of his traits. If he can produce his best on the day, he would be a chance, but the favourite is all class. The Peter Snowden trained, Epaulette, is a $17 chance, and the rest are out the gate.

Boost for Tassie ■ Tasracing, the Magic Millions and TasBreeders have signed a new threeyear agreement to conduct their Millions Tasmanian Yearling sale. The deal will also see a change to eligibility conditions for the Magic Million Race Series, opening up the way in 2013 to all Magic Millions yearling sales graduates and 3YOs in 2014, subject of a late entry. The change should generate greater interest in the races, especially for Tasmanian owners who have purchased horses at interstate Magic Millions sales. Tasracing Chief Executive, Eliot Forbes, said the threeyear deal reaffirmed Magic Millions confidence in the Tasmanian bloodstock industry. "The yearling sales held earlier this year delivered a record clearance rate of nearly 80 per cent and solidarity to breeders at a time when the na-

■ The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will nexy April celebrate Sir Andrew Davis’s official return to Australia as its Chief Conductor with an exhilarating concert featuring Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. To be held on Friday- Saturday, April 2627, 2013 A Joyous Celebration Gala will be a celebration of great music as the MSO sets out on a new journey under the direction of its inspiring conductor. “Sir Andrew Davis and Bryn Terfel have performed together all over the world, from the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York,” said Huw Humphreys, MSO Director of Artistic Planning. “There could be no more appropriate guest artist to mark Sir Andrew’s inaugural concert as Chief Conductor of the MSO.” Terfel rose to prominence when he won the Lieder Prize in the 1989 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. He has performed in all the great opera houses of the world, and is especially recognised for his portrayals of Figaro, Falstaff and Wotan. “As the most sought-after Wotan of our time in Wagner’s Ring Cycle, we are delighted to present Bryn Terfel in excerpts from Das Rheingold and Die Walküre as well as in Beethoven’s Symphony No.9. It is sure to be a magical night of music making, fitting for the start of the MSO’s journey with Sir Andrew at the helm,” Humphreys said. Sir Andrew Davis was announced as Chief Conductor of the MSO in June for an initial period of four years. His MSO concerts in 2013 include works such as Verdi’s Requiem, Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, Strauss’ Thus Spake Zarathustra and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

AFL FANS GET THEIR MONEY’S WORTH

■ The fans got their money’s worth with the two semi-finals. Fremantle jumped Adelaide with four early goals and led until the 17.20 min. mark of the third quarter. It was a slogging effort by the Crows to fight back even though they enjoyed the home ground and crowd advantage. It took precisely 72 minutes to accomplish. You know my thoughts on the ridiculous amounts of money being shelved out to a handful of coaches and players, including Ross Lyon’s alleged $1.6m per season for four years. So is it unfair to query Lyon’s, in my view, error in not moving Alex Silvagni off match winner Taylor (Tex) Walker (5gls. 2) who totally outclassed him. Now there will be excuses galore why he didn’t but I cannot understand why the handy Kepler Bradley was dropped because Freo had to be one or two ‘talls’ short with Luke McPharlin injured and skipper Matty Pavlich trying to run with an Achilles tendon injury. If you need to experience pain try the Achilles. Why didn’t Lyon try Adam McPhee or Zac Clarke who is 203cm and fast. Surely it was a ‘John Kennedy’ case of “for heaven’s sake make a move – but do something!” With $1.6m going down the drain anything was surely worth a try. I am a purist when it comes to umpiring and sticking to The Laws of the Game. It is obvious no one in the umpiring department takes any notice of my comments. In this Say no use wasting time on ‘brawling packs” so I restrict my remarks to ruckmen and their Ruck Duels/Sorry Brawls around the ground in field ball-ups and boundary throwins. The Laws spell out “no shepherding in these ruck duels”. Listen carefully at boundary throw-ins and you will hear the umpire call to the two burly combatants, “go for the ball - NO shepherding in the ruck!” What a farce! What a joke! A story, Final Analysis, by former AFL player Adrian Fletcher, a football brain, is headed with a picture of Dean Cox and Darren Jolly. They are grappling and wrestling-strongest man wins! No attempt by the umpire to free-kick whoever initiated the holding. What a pity for you thousands of U50 fans who never saw the mammoth battles between ‘Big John’ Nicholls and Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer in the 1960s. There was only one officiating Field Umpire who was respected, exerted control and above all umpired to The Laws and was consistent. This was when the “best man won”. Incidentally you can add Matty Kreuzer to the 2013 wrestlers now ‘Malteaser Mick’ has taken over at Carlton. In fact if you are a punter back the Blues for the Final Four next year. And expect changes in the playing style of several Blue-Boys. Despite my obsession to umpire to The Laws I thought both matches were entertaining and good spectacles. I’m sure the Umpires Selectors won’t have ‘the bottle’ to select first season Jordan Bannister to join Brett Rosebury, Chris Donlan and Matt Nicholls for the Big Three for the

Impending milestones ■ 300 games – Jude Bolton, Sydney Swans. Jude will become the third player in club history to reach 300 games, joining Adam Goodes (317 games since 1999) and Michael O’Loughlin (303 games, 1995-2009). Bolton will reach 300 games in 13 years, 93 days since his debut, making him the third fastest person in the game’s history to reach the mark behind teammate Adam Goodes and the Adelaide Crows’ Mark Ricciuto. The fastest players in history from debut to 300 games are Adam Goodes (12 years, 172 days), Mark Ricciuto (13 years, 81 days), Jude Bolton (13 years, 93 days), Craig Bradley (13 years, 94 days) and Andrew McLeod (13 years, 97 days). ★★★ Most Senior Games, Rookie List Player - Darren Jolly, Collingwood.
