It was the first time I had been in a Chinese restaurant and eaten a Chinese meal. “Today (Friday) Henry Gay turned 80. Henry and Maureen, Jim and Regina Murphy, and Angela and I had a meal at the ‘China Pearl’ in Hervey Bay. I ordered Chicken Chow Mien.”

WORLD’S MOST DANCEABLE CITY
■ Twenty years ago, actors Paul Mercurio, Bill Hunter, Tara Morice, Barry Otto and Pat Thompson captured the nation's heart in Baz Luhrmann's multi award-winning movie Strictly Ballroom. Baz's parents were professional ballroom competition dancers and by growing up in a passionate community of colourful characters, sequenced dresses, hair-spray and savvy dancers, the entire dance industry in Australia and around the world was given a quickstep image boost. Who could forget Bill Hunter's character Doug Hastings memorable line, "We had the chance but we were scared. We walked away. We lived our lives in fear!" Millions of viewers around the world have continued to tune into programs such as the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing in the United Kingdom and Dancing With The Stars in the United States and Australia; many attributing the surge in the sport's popularity to Strictly Ballroom. On Friday (Nov 23) 3AW's Mark Wilson and 'Mann About Town' David Mann, together with Dancing With The Stars personalities will be kicking up their heels alongside talented young dancers on the corner along Little Collins and Swanston Sts to launch Australia's Premier Dancesport Event - the 2012 Australian Dancesport Championship. The event will be held from Thurs-

to be crowned the No.1 dancer in this style. On her sporting Porch in Albert Park, I caught up with Event Director, Margaret Lonsdale, to learn more about the 67th Australian Dancesport Championship and who is tipped to be crowned the WDSF 2012 champions. When did you become involved in the championships? I have been involved with the ADS on the Executive Committee since 1983. The Australian Championship had previously been held at the Melbourne Town Hall, Sydney Town Hall, Festival Hall, the Glasshouse and Broadmeadows Town Hall. It was decided in 1983 to move the event to a more central location and develop its profile into a truly international event. What was your drive to achieve this? My primary focus was to lift the profile of the sport, and to market the event far and wide and attract television and corporate sponsorship. It was this drive that really got me involved on a long journey. What is your background in the world of competitive dancing? I had been an international delegate for 12 years to the international member body for the World DanceSport Federation who are members of the International Olympic Committee. I was a top competitor in both amateur and professional events in Australia. We trained with the great Alf Davies (a world champion) and multi Australian Champion Kevin Gibson. What is involved putting together the winning bid? We won the bid in 2010 against some stiff competition. Prior to the presentation we worked with Victorian Major Events Company on the bid document. Melbourne is considered to be located far away from Europe, so we had to push hard to encourage member federations to make the journey to visit Melbourne. There is a lot of hard work involved, ensuring that everything is in place such as sponsorship and a great team of people to assist in delivering a the world standards and quality of the event to Melbourne. This is our third world championship in eight years and by far the biggest. The event is a Festival of Dance, so there will be different mini events within the programme. How many athletes will be competing this year?
● Australia's Michael Glikman and Milana Deitch We have 44 countries competing will be presented to celebrate this and 148 athletes in the World Cham- milestone? ■ Racing Victoria Chairman, Michael Duffy, says the eight-month suspension is adequate for jockey Damien Oliver’s after his bet on Miss Octopussy at Moonee Valley. Yesterday’s decision followed the stewards’ inquiry into breaches of the Rules of Racing associated with a bet placed by Oliver. The Investigative Committee comprised Rob Montgomery, Deputy Chairman of Stewards and James Hitchcock, Stipendiary Steward. Tony Burns, Barrister, was engaged to assist with independent legal advice. The Committee was initially appointed by the Board of Racing Victoria to investigate the race fixing media reports relating to the race won by Smoking Aces. On October 22 Oliver’s legal representatives contacted the Committee to commence a series of ‘without prejudice’ discussions. As these discussions were held on a without prejudice basis, the Committee was obliged to maintain the confidentiality of those discussions and not to disclose their content. The Committee says it formed the view that its best prospects of securing a certain conviction was to obtain an admission of guilt from Oliver. The Committee says the option of standing Oliver down prior to the laying of charges was not pursued by the Committee on the basis that this would have most likely jeopardised an admission being obtained which would be admissible in any Stewards Inquiry. “That the only similar and relevant precedent was that of jockey Blake Shinn in New South Wales,” said Mr Duffy. “In that case Mr Shinn was disqualified for six months for betting on a rival horse in a race. In total, he was disqualified for a period of 15 months for many bets, with this aggregate penalty reduced on appeal to 12 months disqualification. “In relation to Mr Oliver, Racing Victoria stewards imposed a penalty of eight months disqualification plus a further two month suspension of his licence to ride in races for his $10,000 bet on a rival horse, plus a concurrent one month suspension of his licence to ride in races for use of his mobile telephone in the jockeys’ room.” “It is my belief that the penalty delivered in the stewards’ inquiry was appropriate given the cooperation afforded by Mr Oliver,” Mr Duffy said.

Told to Luke Wallis and Jeff Jenkins, Opitz tells of his experience with AC/DC, The Angels, Australian Crawl, Jimmy Barnes, Richard Clapton, Cold Chisel, Divinyls, Hoodoo Gurus, INXS, Models, Noiseworks, The Reels, Rose Tattoo and more. Opitz’s 30-year career has seen him work with Kiss, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and many more. Today, she is recognised as a National Living Treasure and has become one of the biggest influences in awakening the palates of meat-and-threeveg eating Australians. “Margaret Fulton certainly deserves her own musical, even if it’s just the lasagne recipe set to music”, says writer Doug MacLeod. ● Christine Salem and her trio had feet tapping at the Australasian Worldwide Music Expo.
Impressive line-up at music expo ■ The Australasian Worldwide Music Expo offered an impressive line-up of local and international artists on Friday, kicking off with three Australian groups on the Arts Centre's outdoor APRA stage. Energetic, bordering on crazy, the Tek Tek Ensemble was brightly colouredm in clothes and music alike, and highly danceable. Their diversely-inspired world music, incorporating trombone, piano accordion and every style from 1920s jazz to flamenco, proved highly popular. If anything, their 40-minute set was a little on the short side. The rock-reggae Bart Willoughby Band was also a hit with the crowd, and their upbeat, engaging style drew an appreciative audience. Leah Flanagan's short solo set, barely 15 minutes, set in between, comprised a couple of wellcrafted songs, but was too much of an abrupt gear change and drew mixed responses. The evening's showcase concert, held in the Playhouse Theatre, featured international artists Edou (New Caledonia) and Christine Salem (Reunion Island) as well as Melbourne-based Clare Bowditch. Despite some confusion with regards to the concert's start time, the line-up was a wonderful demonstration of the variety of music encompassed by the Expo. Edou and his band presented songs rooted in the Melanesian music of New Caledonia, fusing traditional kaneka melodies with reggae and African influences. Rhythms were catchy, and the group's easy-going attitude and banter were highly enjoyable. While drums and guitar were solid, the group's flair for harmony was most striking, with the four male voices blending in effortless beauty. Without a double the star of the concert, Christine Salem's trio had feet tapping and some dancing outright. The Mayola, vocal slave music of the Reunion Islands, was here accompanied by an impressive selection of drums and the kayanm - a flat shaker synonymous with the Mayola tradition. In the hands of Christine, the music was energetic and theatrical, with an incredible sense of rhythmic homogeneity across the ensemble. Despite the language barrier, it was clear that the group were holding nothing back, and the whether driving or melancholy (though there was little of this) the music's narrative quality was always forefront. Though marketed as a headline act for the expo, Clare Bowditch seemed somewhat subdued after two such diverse musical experiences. She sang with a strong, expressive voice, occasionally poignant lyrics and a good supporting band. However, the jolt back to Australian singersongwriter was not entirely welcome, and the result felt somewhat bland and unsure of its goal. The two final songs, both from Clare's recent album The Winter I Chose Happiness, were the best of the pick, rounding out a mostly upbeat evening in style. - Naomi Johnson

Drop-out story is real cliffhanger ■ David Gatward-Ferguson delights in telling people, particularly his fellow Brits, that he’s a drop-out. “Wife’s one, too,” he cheerfully adds. “I dropped-out of marketing computer systems, and Amanda dropped-out from being an accountant. “And now we spend our days in the most beautiful terrain in the world. Fellow Poms turn greener than the hills around here when we tell them that people actually pay us to take them into the these mountains, to get them into the old gold-mining sites down by the rivers, and by four-wheel to places just so incredibly rich in history and folklore.” ‘Here’ for David and Amanda is the spectacular alpine country around Queenstown on New Zealand’s south island. “We’d become sick and tired of boardroom back-stabbing and bitchiness in London,” David says. “So one day in 1993 we walked-out, bought two air tickets to New Zealand, and we’ve been here since.” On arriving in Auckland, David and Amanda decided that a “nice long drive” would be a good way to see the country, so they bought a campervan, and weeks later ended up in Queenstown. There they came upon an opportunity to take over a company called Nomad Safaris that specialised in 4WD tours into the stunningly beauti-

Beating nature’s adversities ■ It’s not often that a winemaker can say that from a vintage that most described as “challenging and trying,” they were delivered some of the best white fruit they’ve ever had to work with. But that’s what Rymill Coonawarra’s Sandrine Gimon had to say of fruit for the company’s 2011 The Yearling Sauvignon Blanc.
One For Lunch ■ Like many others in the 1950s and 60s, Eric Brand sold grapes from a block he owned in Coonawarra to the big Rouge Homme winery, and like those others was dubbed in the area a “Blocker.”
“We had above average rainfall in winter, colder soil temperatures contributed to slow bud burst, and then heavy rains came during November and December,” Sandrine said.
In 1966 Eric went a step further releasing a wine under his own Brand’s Laira label, it and subsequent drops going on to become some of Coonawarra’s finest and most respected.
“But the vineyard crew worked through everything that Mother Nature threw at them.” And through their care, the result was that excellent fruit that Sandrine describes as “sassy, luscious and multi-dimensional,” and which has resulted in the 2011
And today under the guidance of winemaker Peter Weinburg that tradition continues, with Brand’s Laira just releasing a wonderful 2008 Blockers Cabernet Sauvignon from a vintage Peter says delivered fruit of exceptional quality.
The Yearling being richly Sauvignon Blanc varietal, with trademark Coonawarra vibrancy and lovely lemon and passionfruit flavours.
The wine is rich with intense blackberry/blackcurrant fruit flavours, fine tannins and varietal spice; pay $24.99 and enjoy with a rosemary-infused leg of lamb.
Good value at $15 and a great appetiser wine to start a party with dips based on artichokes or sun-dried tomatoes, or to enjoy with most Thai dishes.

ful mountain terrain behind Queenstown – taking adventurous tour ists along roads that were once little more than foot-tracks for early sheep farmers. Later these same tracks became pathways to the stars for thousands o hopefuls who flocked to the area when cries of “Gold!” rang out from creek beds at the bottom of 75-degree ra vines topped by razor-back peaks “Some visitors find the roads heart-stoppers,” says David as he inches his Landrover across a muddy washaway on a section of mountain pass that’s 100m directly above the Shotover River. The 32km road took 200 men ten years to build, including two years fo a mere 300 metres around the almost vertical Pincher’s Bluff: to build this white-knuckle section in 1888, men were lowered on ropes to plug dyna mite into holes they drilled into the schist, and would then yell to thei mates at the top to haul up like crazy as the cliff face blew away below them. David and Amanda’s tours take people through the incredibly beauti ful Skipper’s Canyon, so-named be cause when gold was found in the early 1860s, not only did crews jump ship from vessels calling at Dunedin – so too did the skipper of one, who simply telegraphed his boss in England that as his entire crew had gone to make their fortunes, he might as wel too! At one stage the mountains and riv ers were yielding as much gold as the fabled Yukon. The first miners into the region, Thomas Arthur and Harry Redfern had originally walked 350km into the mountains from Dunedin to work as shearers. But when Thomas Arthur found a huge nugget in the Shotover River they pinched the frying pan from thei boss’s kitchen to go panning for more gold, and never returned. “Mr Arthur and Mr Redfern told o picking up gold by the pound,” a Dunedin newspaper reported at the time. “They were laden with gold tha they said lay everywhere in the can yon…” It sparked the gold rush and twelve thousand hopefuls flocked to the area but their new-found wealth proved fatal for Arthur and Redfern: both died of alcoholism a few years later. Nomad Safaris shows visitors the remains of such historic old ruins as the Welcome Home Hotel that ca tered first to the miners during the ‘rush,’ and later horse and carriage tourists who were as enchanted then by the rugged beauty of the mountains as visitors are today. The hotel finally closed in 1940 There’s also the little mountain cot tage of John Balderstone and his wife Fanny, an Irish dancer who came ou to entertain the miners. They retired after the ‘rush’ to the quiet of the mountains, but Fanny yearned for the bright lights o Queenstown. So John struck a compromise: he built a new cottage for them half-way between their old home in the moun tains, and those bright lights… There’s also a museum at the old Skipper’s Town that once boasted ove 1000 residents. Half-day 4WD safaris start from NZ$165 per adult. For details phone +64 03 442 6699 or visi www.nomadsafaris.co.nz

Di Feeling so loved ■ My work has been such a blessing these past few weeks, and so have my friends and family. After suffering the loss of my mother and two friends I have felt very loved by so many people. My apartment is full of flowers, beautiful roses, white lilies and irises. I have put up so many cards in my lounge room and it looks like Christmas already! I always look for the right quotes that fit the day and was reading about work over these days of adapting to life without loved ones and did smile when I read Oscar Wilde’s quote, “Work is the curse of the drinking classes”! Then I turned to the Dalai Lama and he says of work: “We are here to work and be happy”. That bought me great comfort. It was the one constant that was there during the recent weeks. And wonderful to turn to. At the end of the day I felt as though I had contributed, even though I felt quite disconnected. Time does heal and I have started to get my Christmas tree together and planning my festive season to be held in Melbourne for the first time in years. There is a heap of entertainment coming up too that will keep me out of mischief!
I love my job!
■ One of the loveliest men I have met over my career is the wonderful Peter Allen. No one has replaced him as far as I am concerned. He was a true star and a no fuss personality. He made his own cup of tea with honey in the Channel 9 canteen and was so down to earth. And he was so talented. I mention him because one of Australia’s most versatile and critically acclaimed performers and the originator of the ultimate Peter Allen portrayal, the ever busy Todd McKenney, has returned to the stage with a brand new show, Songs And Stories Of Peter Allen , a live national concert. He will be in Melbourne with the show, a two-hour extravaganza with an eight-piece band on Saturday, December 1 at The Palms At Crown. www.ticketek.com.au for tickets or call 132 849. Visit Todd on his website www.toddmckenney.com.au I will never forget seeing Peter Allen perform. He was breathtaking.
For COLIN HAY: WHAT A LOVELY MAN
■ I just met Colin Hay in at ABC774. What a lovely man. He has a national tour coming. He has a lovely disposition and so comfortable to be around. I found him quite shy however he always has something fabulous to say. Colin said “ An aboriginal man once came backstage after a show and said to him in a kindly voice: ‘Where’s your dance? I used to like your dance, you’ve lost your dance mate, you’ve gotta find your dance.’ “So, I set out in search of it, looking here , there and everywhere in al corners of the globe.
Santana coming to Deniliquin ■ ‘Santana coming to Deniliquin’. Now there is a sentence I didn’t think I would ever write. It’s true. Santana is coming to Deni! They will be among the headline acts for the inaugural Deni Blues and Roots Festival 2013. In an exciting collaboration, Chugg Entertainment and Rob Potts Entertainment Edge have announced the great news for the iconic Deniliquin Ute Muster famed site. The Deniliquin Ute Muster has long been on the local calendar as the ‘must go to event’ of the year. Now comes the exciting news that the site will become a regional event centre, with a new musical event announced for the facility next year. Michael Chugg and Rob Potts will work with the team behind the Deni Ute Muster, Deni Play On The Plains Festival Ltd to hold the Deni Blues and Roots Festival at Easter 2013. The fabulous first time two-day event will be held ‘Easter Saturday’ and Easter Sunday with headline names along with Santana, and including Steve Miller Band, Bonnie Raitt, Chris Isaak and more on March 30 and 31. Making the announcement, Michael Chugg said: “We’re so excited to bring this new event to Deniliquin for the first time. “This is an area with a strong tradition bringing people together for a good time and with the calibre of acts on this line-up, they won’t be disappointed.” Camping facilities will be available on site from 12 Noon Good Friday until 12 Noon Monday, April 1. I love camping, so am very excited about all this. The venue is fully licensed, that’s another plus. For ticket, camping and festival info go to Denibluesfestival.com or visit Facebook.com/denibluesfest

“Quite soon I realised that ‘finding my dance’ is an inner search, and that whilst I may never truly find it, it matters not. “What’s important is to keep searching, and in the process, refine and simplify the steps.” What beautiful words. I really relate to that. I recall when I was much younger I thought I would find everything I needed by rushing around the world, meeting as many people as I could, buying as many clothes as I could and being out there amongst the world. And whilst this was so fabulous and I managed to find so many wonderful wonders and miracles in the world, and meet fabulous people, it wasn’t until I sat and went inside and realised what I had been looking for was with me all the time!
● Bonnie Raitt
is Hay’s expression for connecting with one’s authentic self. In the process, he takes the audience on a musical journey, sometimes straight down the main road, and sometimes taking the twists and turns of the road less travelled. I am very keen to see him live on stage and will be heading off on Saturday, February 16 or Sunday, February 17 when he appears at The Athenaeum Theatre. Hay is at the absolute peak of his craft. As a writer and vocalist, he has never been more masterful. “Hay is a consummate songwriter, who’s only gotten better and better with age,” aaid the Daytrotter, Illinois. For more dates in Victoria and more info about the tour visit www.colinhay.com or www.duetgroup.com ● Colin Hay What a revelation it was. So rich. So back to beautiful Colin Hay. Themes of redemption and renewal come naturally to Colin Hay, as he is in the midst of a remarkable renaissance. While his voice and visage are still familiar to millions from his tenure as front man, principal songwriter, and lead vocalist of pop sensations Men At Work (Down Under, Overkill, Who Can It Be Now?),the past 20 years have found him quietly yet tenaciously re-introducing himself to new generations of fans. It has been an organic process, building momentum through constant touring, and film and television exposure. Finding My Dance
Tubular Bells ■ With recent events in my life, so many memories have been flooding back to me. So when a friend mentioned Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells to me, I instantly recalled the album. And I was most excited to find out that Tubular Bells For Two is coming to Melbourne. Presented by Kay & Mclean Productions in association with Places + Spaces, arranged and performed by Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts, this five-star hit of 2012 Edinburgh Fringe is going to be exceptional. Following out sell out seasons at the Sydney Festival, New Zealand International Arts Festival Tubular Bells for Two

comes to the Melbourne Recital Centre on Friday, February 15. Tubular Bells for Two is the recreation of the original album performed as faithfully, as possible whilst accepting the challenge of undertaking such a large piece of music with only four hands and four feet. But most importantly, rather than simply mimicking Oldfield’s multi-tracked arrangements, his show captures the soul and emotional journey of this remarkable folk-rock epic. Tubular Bells For Two started as an idea conjured up over a bottle of wine and two guitars by old school friends Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts. After arranging the music of this classic bestselling rock music album by ear for acoustic guitar, more and more instruments were added as the two musicians amassed them from friends, rubbish skips and designed from whatever materials available (the first set of Tubular Bells were fashioned from fence posts). Amongst the vast collection of instruments onstage are keyboards, umpteen guitars, bass, mandolin, glockenspiel and loop pedals and of course tubular bells; this little project has become a mathematical and acrobatic musical rollercoaster. It is simply a show with two blokes and too many instruments In 2013 Tubular Bells will celebrate its 40th anniversary. So this is a very special occasion . Turn To Page 47

Freemasons Task Force in thye community
■ Legends of Melbourne television, radio and recording industries gathered at the weekend, and the Observer was there to report the event (see Page 40). Former 3KZ identity Peter Philp spoke about Binny Lum, whose death, at 07, we reported last week. Binny had the unique ability to sound as if she was in the room with the listener, said Peter, who had worked in the early days with ‘Cousin Binny’ teamed with Norman Swain.
Drawing the line
Merv Dyer with Comfort Teddies Photo: Ben Quick The Freemasons Task Force has actively supported the Victorian community for nearly three decades. As the men on the scene when help is needed most, they are the embodiment of the Masonic values of community service and benevolence. After the overwhelming tragedy of 2009's Black Saturday bushfires, the Task Force was on hand to assist in cleaning up the devastation. The Task Force supported ordinary men, women and children affected by the disaster, replanting the Licola Wilderness Village, rebuilding the Rough Riders Hut in the Victorian High Country and repairing fences on local farms in Avoca. Of course, the people of Victoria are not always beset by state-wide emergencies and natural disasters, but the Task Force continues to support the community. The Task Force is currently collecting LEGO donations, to support ASD Aid in providing LEGO therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and knitting Comfort Teddies, to provide some comfort to distressed children who need the services of the CFA, St John Ambulance and Ambulance Victoria. Task Force Chairman Merv Dyer says the ten years he has spent with the Task Force have been some of the most satisfying of his Masonic career. 'I've always been oriented to charity and helping others,' says Merv. 'Being able to support so many different parts of the community gives you a great feeling, especially when you look back and reflect on the positive impact we have. 'More importantly, it provides an avenue for Freemasonry to be in the community and support those in need, while also giving our members opportunities to support communities outside their direct areas of influence,' Merv says. Merv says he finds the work that the Task Force does with children who have special needs most fulfilling. 'Seeing the joy on their faces when they achieve a goal is probably the most satisfying part,' he says. 'It's hard not to take over when supporting children who have special needs. You need to learn to watch and support, to provide moral support and encouragement, rather than taking over. This is a lesson we all need to learn and it is one that is difficult to achieve, but satisfuing when we do.' Contact taskforce@freemasonsvic.net.au for more information.

■ We receive many phone calls, e-mails and letters from Observer readers. Often there are questions about how to obtain a book or a DVD that has been featured in the newspaper. Sometimes it’s a request for assistance in answering a question. A survey has been published this week that shows that people trust their printed newspaper far more than any other source. But sometimes we have to draw a line ... and I will tell you why.
Our reply ■ Observer reader Camille of Kingsbury this week sent us a 26-page letter. Camille has some personal challenges, and asked for our guidance. We need to make it clear that the $2.95 purchase price of the Observer cannot include a personal advice service. In these days of litigation we would be unswise indeed to pretend to be experts. I know our friends at radio stations such as 3AW receive the same type of requests. Will we visit the listener or reader? No. Can we offer personal advice? No. To do so would enter a minefield legally, where we could end owing a duty of care. The radio world witnessed what can go wrong when a broadcaster such as the Rev. Alex Ken-worthy crosssed the line. That’s not for us.
