The Cup: weight for it ■ Racing Victoria's General ManagerRacing, Greg Carpenter, has labelled the weights for this year's Emirates Melbourne Cup as one of the most challenging of his 10year stint as RV's Chief Handicapper with the retirement of several high profile stars. Admire Rakti, the Japanese entry, has been given top weight of 58 kilos, after weights were raised two kilos. He was a good thing beaten in last year's Japan Cup, where he finished a strong fourth after being in trouble earlier. Only one Japanese horse has competed in the Melbourne Cup since Delta Blues and Pop Rock ran first and second in the 2006 Cup. Tokai Trick was unplaced in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, since then, quarantine restrictions have restricted Japanese horses from competing. If victorious at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November, the Tomoyuki trained Admire Rakti will be become the first original top weight since Comic Court saluted in 1950 to win the Cup. I recall talking to top jockey Craig Williams about Admire Rakti sometime back, and he said he was very good and would be well suited in a race like the Melbourne Cup. He added that he would stay as long as your mother-in-law, and the distance of 3200 metres would suit him admirably. Carpenter said: "Under the Australian Rules of Racing he was obligated to release a top weight of 58 kilos, however with recent top staying horses, Fiorente, Dunaden and Americain now retired, there was no natural top weight, so I've had to effectively lift weights two kilos for the majority of runners.” "Whilst this year' s Emirates Melbourne Cup entry carries the 2012 winner, Green Moon, dual runner-up Red Cadeaux, and last year's Caulfield Cup winner, Fawkner, none warranted being allocated top weight based on their past handicaps and their overall form across

2000 metres and further, in the past two years, and was emphatic in winning the Sydney Cup over the Melbourne Cup distance on a heavy track. He is reasonably weighted on 56.5 kilos the same weight carried by Jeune, in winning the 1994 Melbourne Cup. Last year's early Melbourne Cup favorite the big grey, Puissance De Lune, is running into some form, but has a long way to go. However he needs to pick a quality race or two to avoid missing the ballot. Of the others the three mares, Kirramosa, last year's Victoria Oaks winner, Lucia Valentina, second in the ATC Oaks behind Rising Romance, and the three quarter sister to triple Melbourne Cup winner, Makybe Diva, have good weight breaks. The first two mentioned with 53 kilos and La Amistad with 51.5 kilos.

the past two seasons". The Lloyd Williams-owned, Green Moon, who is striving to become the sixth dual Cup winner, has been allocated 57 kilos having carried 57.5 kgs, when he finished 21st last year, after winning the Cup in 2012. "Green Moon won the Cup with 54.5 kilos, and if successful will join Peter Pan (1932-34) as the only dual winner in nonconsecutive years," Carpenter said. Red Cadeaux, who is set to line up in his fourth consecutive Melbourne Cup, has been allocated 57 kilos- arise of half a kilo on his second placing last year and a nose second to Dunaden in 2011. Sydney Cup winner and Melbourne Cup favourite, The Offer, prepared by Gai Waterhouse, is going for consecutive Melbourne Cups, for the popular trainer, after breaking the drought last year with Fiorente. His trainer, Peter Moody, who is a partowner, is thrilled the way he is going, and will now set him for the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley late next month over the unfamiliar trip of 2040 metres. He won the Memsie Stakes first-up since April over 1400 metres, then went the extra distance to 1600 metres, to take out the

Injury spells end ■ I was sad to hear that popular Clerk of the Course and leading racing man, Graham Salisbury, has retired from the Clerk of the Course ranks due to injury. He hasn't worked for sometime after injuring his back behind the barriers at a face meeting, and has had a great deal of trouble getting it right. A terrific horseman, he was of the good guys in racing always parting his knowledge on to both young and old if they were to inquire about a horse or riding. He spent something like 40 years in the leathers wearing the popular red jacket. In recent years he along with his mate, 1992 Melbourne Cup winner, Subzero, have entertained both adults and children around Australia. I only hope that is not lost to the racing industry with his outstanding knowledge of the horse and riding. - Ted Ryan
