Cabaret Festival gala opening Picnic At Hanging Rock

● Kara Swift as Miranda in Picnic At Hanging Rock. Photo: Hannah McRae ■ Purely Pensive Productions presents the stage adaptation of the Australian classic Picnic At Hanging Rock from June 26-28 at the Mechanics Institute Performing Arts Centre, Brunswick. Adapted by Laura Annawyn Shamas from the novel by Lady Joan Lindsay, the story tells of a group of Australian schoolgirls whose romantic Valentine’s Day outing ends in an intriguing mystery. What has happened to the three seniors and the mathematics teacher on top of the jagged peaks of Hanging Rock? Based on the runaway best-seller, this play explores a baffling disappearance which takes its toll on a small community in the Australian countryside, and looks delicately at crisis, greed and honesty at the turn of the century. Director Jeremy Ives says Picnic At Hanging Rock is a tale which has fascinated Australians for nearly 50 years. “We’re incredibly excited to bring the adaptation of such an iconic tale to the Melbourne stage,” he says. “It’s a glorious and diverse tale of schoolgirls who go missing on Valentine’s Day at one of Victoria’s most beautifully haunting places.” Venue: Mechanics Institute, Cnr. ● Michael Dalley performs in the Melbourne Cabaret Festival on June 26 and 27. Photo: Ponch Hawkes ■ It’s Melbourne Cabaret Festival time again. Until 6 July, audiences will enjoy a wonderful array of Australian cabaret and music theatre performers in various venues across Melbourne. Attending the Gala Opening last Thursday evening, I learnt the talent is seriously top-notch and the three-week event proves to have something for all tastes and moods. From the saucily profane ‘Mr. Sister’ Candice McQueen (aka: Spanky) and the tongue-in-cheek wit of Michael Dalley, to the ethereal magic of harpist Alana Conway and the bold-as-brass power of Geraldine Quinn’s 80s pop tribute. As the Gala was a ‘tasting platter’ of several of the festivals performances to be held at Chapel Off Chapel this year, we were treated to meeting some of this year’s performers, a gregarious bunch. Elise McCann, bubbly and delightful in her tribute to Lucille Ball, had the perfect amount of whacky, Lucy comedy and a brilliant voice. Dalley was soft spoken and polite which made his naughty, Noel Coward-esq songs even more hilarious. Quinn, whose cabaret is actually a sing-a-long, was fantastic at getting the audience participating and outrageously great at belting out her song. They’ll each be performing this weekend. Actually hailing from the UK, Spanky was an energetic host with an abundance of personality, energy, and obscenities, as well as a good singing voice. However, this reviewer would have preferred more wit and less vulgarity. More originality, in other words. Spanky is on at 9pm, June 26-28. Conway, who maintained a deep and intense connection with the music she played, was inspiring. Singing the songs of Eva Cassidy, Conway’s exquisite voice and skilful harp playing reached out to caress, soothe, and warm the crowd. Conway will perform at 6:45pm, June 26 and 27. Also showcased were legends Melissa Langton and Amanda Harrison as well as Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham. Langton was wonderfully funny and entertaining as always. Harrison shared her secrets as well as her astonishing voice, and Mitcham displayed a huge emotional range and beautiful voice. Their shows played last weekend. Performances: Until July 6 Venues: various including Chapel Off Chapel, Draculas, Fortyfivedownstairs, The Butterfly Club, Kew Courthouse, and Village Melbourne Bookings: www.melbournecabaret.com/

Suicide of Solitude

● Kristof Kaczmarek and Elizabeth O'Callaghan rehearse The Suicide of Solitude. ■ Exit Theatre Inc. and Rochford Wines present the Australian premiere of The Suicide of Solitude from July 11August 3 at Rochford Wines, Yarra Valley. This tragicomedy in 13 steps, one intermission and a jump, is written by award winning Ukrainian playwright Neda Nejdana and directed by Kristof Kaczmarek. The Suicide of Solitude teeters on the border of tragedy and farce as it deals with one of the essential issues of our modern society: suicide as result of isolation (whether intentional or imposed) and loss of meaning of life. Yet it allows the audience to choose the ending. The kaleidoscopic events (rescue, assault and murder investigation) provoke anticipation, laughter, fear and hope. SHE (Elizabeth O’Callaghan), a distressed and elegantly-dressed woman is ready to jump off the roof of a nine storey building. Her intentions are interrupted by HIM (Kristof Kaczmarek), a mysterious man with a gun and … a dead body. Is he going to persuade her not to jump? Or maybe the Human Cats (Suha Sini Seelin and Dawid Kaczmarek), that happen to be having a celebration of the full moon on the roof, will do so. Full of witty twists and turns, this compilation of drama, farce, thriller and fantasy constitutes philosophical parable of the two souls that crave for love, yet are too trapped in their own existence to grasp it. A maze-play with elements of the absurd and surrealism, it will bring the audience to both laugh and reflect. Venue: Rochford Winery, 878-880 Maroondah Highway, Coldstream (Mel Ref: 277) Performance dates and times (16 shows): Thursday, July 10 at 7.30pm (Preview), Friday, July 11 at 7.30pm (Opening Night), Fridays and Saturdays at 7.30pm, Sundays at 5pm, 2pm matinees on Saturday July 19, 26 and August 2. Songs From Movies

● Emily Yarrow ■ La Mama Courthouse Theatre has been turned into a nightclub for the Melbourne International Cabaret Festival, to July 6. Instead of the raked seating and stage area, there is now cabaret style seating with round tables, red check table cloths and candles. The stage area is raised and red velvet swag curtains adorn the proscenium arch. The first cabaret artiste of the season at La Mama is English singer Emily Yarrow. Since starting her night-club career in the Paul Martin Soho club in London, she has performed her act written and directed by Yarrow and Peter Callow, in and around London. Accompanied by pianist Matthew Hadgraft, her style is Hollywood night-club glamour, with humour and a quiz competition to test the movie knowledge of the audience. She delivers what the show’s title promises, Songs from the Movies, from soundtracks of Abbott and Costello, Bond movies, Born Free, Cabaret and from Doris Day and Marilyn Monroe films. Whilst dimmed lighting was fine for the auditorium to give a feeling and atmosphere of a nightclub, the black stage with blacks all around and little lighting, did not emphasise or illuminate the glamour of the singer and her accompanist who also chose to wear black costumes for the opening night. That aside, she has a great voice and a terrific accompanist and they give everything to provide an entertaining evening with attitude and style. Performances: Until June 29. Wednesday, Friday, Sunday 9pm. Thursday, Saturday 7 pm. Running time: 90 minutes Venue: La Mama Courthouse, 205 Faraday St, Carlton Tickets: $15/25 Bookings: (03) 9347 6948 or online at www.lamama.com.au - Rita Crispin

Phoenix’s shows Psyche! and Mind Games prove he can seemingly not only get inside the head of anyone, but also use incredible powers of influence and will finish the show with a thrilling water tank escape. He performed a similar version on Australia's Got Talent when he received a standing ovation from both the audience and the judges. Phoenix has trained as a mentalist, hypnotist, and illusionist and can read people’s minds using a mix of psychology, social sciences, misdirection and a variety of other methods including hypnosis, body language reading and more. He is one of the fastest hypnotists in Australia and has the ability to hypnotise someone within 10 seconds. Phoenix consults for blockbuster movies including XMen Origins Wolverine, where he was appointed official consultant for the character Gambit. Circus Oz

● Ringmistress Candy Bowers (centre) with Ben Hendry (left), April Dawson, Matt Wilson and Ania Reynolds. Photo: Rob Blackburn ■ The circus has come to town with a cracking new show. Circus Oz razzled and dazzled under the Big Top at Birrarung Marr with But wait … there’s more! and judging from the cheers, hoops, foot-stamping and smiles all around, the audience loved it. Who says circuses can’t be political? Circus Oz dealt up its own version of bread and circuses, or at least hot donuts and circuses, with a gentle swipe at ‘infobesity, acceleration, choice-mania and consumanity’ delivered with hilarity from the rickety heights of the flying trapeze. Ringmistress Candy Bowers, ably assisted by Dale Woodbridge-Brown, introduced the entertainers in a show dedicated to ‘dignity, compassion and human kindness’ with a large dose of slapstick thrown in. The usual suspects were all on show - juggling, stunt cycling, stunning acrobatics, clowns – everything that you expect and more but delivered with a twist. Pocket rocket hula-hooper Lilikoi Kaos, the screwball clowning of Olivia Porter and Nathan Kell tumbling through the TV screen were standouts among many. Spenser Inwood’s death-defying but fabulous flips in her trapeze solo, Matt Wilson’s turn as an acerbic talent show judge teetering on a sky-high stack of deck chairs and the amazingly talented unicyclist Kyle Raftery circling the stage with April Dawson elegantly poised on his shoulders were equally show stopping. Felipe Reynold’s glorious ‘down on its luck’ vaudeville theatre set, Laurel Frank’s quirky costuming and songs penned by Casey Bennetto showcase the talents of this terrific ensemble cast of troupers. “Is everyday a little grey?” Matt Wilson asks the audience. Why don’t you inject a little colour back into your life and run away to the circus. Circus Oz big top season in Melbourne: But Wait …. What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs

● Woody Harrelson (left) and Matthew McConaughey (right) give shattering performances as two detectives on a 17 year manhunt in the compelling series True Detective. FILM: TRUE DETECTIVE: Genre: Crime/Drama/Mystery. Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan. Year: 2013. Rating: MA15+. Running Time: 8 Parts - 60 Minutes Each. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ****½ Verdict: Chilling and tension filled story on the lives of two detectives who become entangled both personally and professionally during a 17year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. This is one of the best series ever produced for television, a complex, atmospheric, multi layered, multi textured and compelling thriller that grips with an iron fist from the very first frame to the last. Brilliantly acted by stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey who are right on the mark, truly mesmerising as the flawed detectives. Beautifully filmed, well crafted, intelligently written and masterfully directed (by Cary Fukunaga) True Detective, looks, feels and flows like an eight hour movie, and is as potent and powerful as any thriller produced for the big screen in recent memory, comparable to such classic thrillers as David Fincher's Seven and Zodiac, and Silence of the Lambs. Don't miss this one! FILM: OUT OF THE FURNACE: Genre: Crime/Drama/Thriller. Cast: Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Sam Shepard, Willem Dafoe. Year: 2013. Rating: MA15+. Running Time: 116 Minutes. Format: IN CINEMAS. Stars: ***½ Verdict: Intense drama of a young man who mysteriously disappears and the local law enforcement doesn't follow through fast enough, so his older brother takes matters into his own hands to find justice. Superb cast have a firm grip in this shattering tale set in a dying backwoods steel town with strong influences of the pre and post Vietnam settings in Michael Cimino's 1978's Oscar winner The Deer Hunter. Solid direction by Scott Cooper (the 2008 Oscar winning Crazy Heart starring Jeff Bridges), gripping performances, most notably Christian Bale and an intensely disturbing on-the-edge Woody Harrelson. But one of the real stars is the setting against the raw and haunting backdrop of the ailing township of Braddock, Pennsylvania itself, and its people, and the result is a chilling and compelling experience. FILM: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT - 50th Anniversary: Genre: Comedy/Music. Cast: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Wilfrid Brambell. Year: 1964. Rating: M. Running Time: 85 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **** Verdict: The classic landmark and quirky neo-realistic music-comedy from director Richard Lester that covers a typical day in the life of The Beatles. Beautifully restored and remastered on DVD and Blu-Ray for its 50th anniversary release, A Hard Day's Night is everything from a satire on media, celebrity and pop culture to simple slapstick comedy brimming with wit and comic delight. Striking cinematography by Gilbert Taylor (Repulsion, Dr. Strangelove, Star Wars) and razor sharp editing by John Jympson (Zulu, Where Eagles Dare), the soundtrack includes the classic hit songs: A Hard Day's Night, I Should Have Known Better, I Wanna Be Your Man, All My Loving, Can't Buy Me Love, And I Love Her, She Loves You, and more. A must for all film and Beatles fans! FILM: HANNAH ARENDT: Genre: Biographical/Drama. Cast: Barbara Sukowa, Jenet McTeer, Axel Milberg. Year: 2012. Rating: PG. Running Time: 114 Minutes. Stars: ***½ Verdict: A fascinating and compelling look at the life of philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt, who reported for The New Yorker magazine on the war crimes trial of the Nazi Adolf Eichmann in 1961 and provoked an unprecedented scandal. Intelligently written, intensely atmospheric and methodically paced under the superb direction of cowriter and director Margarethe von Trotta, it is the extraordinarily strong and passionate performance by Barbara Sukowa in the title role that captures the heart of the character and as a result carries the story with beguiling sensitivity and ferocious power. Period detail, recreation, production design and supporting cast all excel in creating a thought provoking and chilling drama of a moment in time and a condition that should not be forgotten. Highly recommended!

Seminar

● Jan Di Pietro (left), Tegan Jones, Tim Redmond, Amy Coutts and Benjamin Watts in Seminar at the Guild Theatre from July 9 - 12. Photo: Jeremy Guzman ■ Community theatre company Pop Culture presents Seminar from July 9-12 at 8pm at the Guild Theatre, First Floor, Union House, Melbourne University, Carlton. Written by Therese Rebeck and directed by Christopher Hosking, the story tells of four aspiring young novelists who sign up for private writing classes with Leonard, an international literary figure. Under his recklessly brilliant and unorthodox instruction, some thrive and others flounder, alliances are made and broken, sex is used as a weapon and hearts are unmoored. The wordplay is not the only thing that turns vicious as innocence collides with experience in this biting comedy. Tickets: $25 Full, $20 Conc. $18pp Group 5+ Bookings: trybooking.com/FCIR

LITTLE MURDERS

● Gavin Williams (Alfred Chamberlain), Stephanie Gonelli (Patsy Newquist) and Oleh Kowalyk (Judge Stern) rehearse for Little Murders at Rosanna from July 3. Photo: David Belton ■ Heidelberg Theatre Company presents Little Murders by Jules Feiffer from July 3 -19 at 8pm, with 2pm matinees on July 6 and 13, at 36 Turnham Ave, Rosanna. Directed by Paul King, this funny, dark comedy tells of what it was like to be alive and half-crazed in the urban American jungle of the late 1960s. Feiffer’s archetypal sitcom family gone absurdist live in a New York whose daily plagues range from noise and air pollution, power failures, nuisance phone calls to random muggings and sniper fire. Yet it’s their blithe acceptance of a world of increasing violence, alienation and the tearing down of the great middle-class verities (gamily, God, law and order) which provide the play’s black, nervous-breakdown comedy. Tickets: $25 Adults, $22 Concession card holders and Members Bookings: 9457 4117 or online htc@org.au

GLORY DAZED ■ Red Stitch Actors Theatre presents the Victorian premiere of Glory Dazed from July 23-August 23 at Red Stitch Theatre, rear 2 Chapel St, St Kilda. Written by Cat Jones (UK) and directed by Greg Carroll, the cast includes Jonathan Peck, Emily Goddard, Andre de Vanny and Laura Jane Turner. Ray isn’t adjusting to civilian life after serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Ray is on the run. Glory Dazed is a darkly humorous and confronting exploration of soldiers returning from Afghanistan, and a blistering response to the over representation of ex-servicemen in UK prisons. Inspired by workshops conducted with real prisoners, Cat Jones has created an unflinching revelation of a man teetering on the brink. So traumatic is Ray’s experience, that returning to his old life with wife Carla and best mate Simon is near impossible, and he begins to drink himself into violence and regret. In a bold attempt to win Carla back and convince her their family is worth fighting for, he enforces a dangerous lock-in at his local pub. Glory Dazed is a timeless message about expectations of servicemen returning from foreign wars, the trials of adjusting to civilian life, and the challenge of maintaining mental stability. Created from stories of real-life returned soldiers, it is a comment on the impact of war after war. Performance Dates: July 25-August 23 Times: Wed – Sat at 8pm, Sun 6.30pm, Sat July 26 and August 2, 9, 16 at 4p,m Venue: Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre, Rear 2 Chapel St., St Kilda Tickets: $39 - $20 Bookings: 9533 8083 or www.redstitch.net

Long shot winner ■ Merrigum trainer Luke Bryant also provided a long shot winner, when 5-Y-0 Mach Three/Impact gelding Freemason greeted the judge in the DPR Insurance Pace for C5 to C7 class over 2190 metres. Burning away from gate four to lead with Bendigo's Scott Dyer in the sulky, Freeman was restrained to allow Hes Magic Red to ease off his back and assume control shortly after the start, giving Freemason the run of the race. Using the sprint lane, Freemason ($55.40) proved too slick at the finish to prevail by a head over the pacemaker in a mile rate of 1-58.5. Im Smouldering ran home late off a three wide trail last lap from last to finish third.

Prevailed over pacer ■ Merrigum trainer Luke Bryant also provided a long shot winner, when 5-Y-0 Mach Three/Impact gelding Freemason greeted the judge in the DPR Insurance Pace for C5 to C7 class over 2190 metres.

In winner’s stall ■ Darraweit Guam trainer/driver Lisa Miles was in the winners stall at Geelong on Tuesday June 17 following the victory of 5-Y-0 Art Major/Nellirama gelding Majorama in the Fox Digital Pace for C0 class over 2100 metres. Settling three back along the markers from gate two, Majorama commenced a forward move three wide in the last lap, being accommodated by Tennaya coming out ahead of him giving Majorama a lovely ride home. Driven desperately on straightening, Majorama rallied to score by a head in 2-00.5 over Tennaya and Mister Smoochy which had raced in the open.

Led from the pole ■ Monegeetta's David Miles was a winner at Shepparton on Wednesday, when Maid For You Lombo a daughter of Sportswriter and champion mare Tailamade Lombo led virtually throughout from gate five to land the 6th Heat of the Empire Stallions Vicbred Super Series for 2-Y-0 Fillies over 2190 metres, defeating Three Dee Delight which led out from the pole before handing over the front running, with Miss Condoleezza third from mid-field. The mile rate 2-02.6.

Shock assault at B’go ■ Sunbury trainer John Woodham provided a shock result to the Bendigo Tafe Pace for C0 class over 1720 metres at the Bendigo HRC fixture conducted at Tabcorp Park Melton on Wednesday, when 4-Y-0 Lombo Mandingo/Hi Yu Lombo mare Bye Bye Lombro greeted the judge at Supertab odds of $49.40. Driven by Kyneton based brother-in-law Tony Xiriha, Bye Bye Lombo was making her 10th appearance at the races (one place only) and from the pole, was given an easy time trailing the almost unbackable favourite Anna Faye (gate four). Easing away from the markers on the final bend, Bye Bye Lombo registered a last stride decision by a head in 1-58.3 after the pair went head and head to the wire, with Nobettertanthis (one/two - three wide home turn) 4.6 metres away in third place.

Harness Review ■ Listen to Len Baker on Harness Review, 8pm10pm Mondays, on 97.9 FM, streamed in 979fm.com.au - Len Baker

Craven, star of Horsham ■ Terang based Matt Craven took the honours at the Horsham trots on Monday June 16, finishing the day with a driving treble. Joining forces with Terang trainer Tony Harrison, talented Modern Art/Moroni colt Clark Griswold was first to arrive, scoring easily in the Conways Pace for C0 class over 1700 metres. Having his first outing since March, Clark Griswold wasn't pushed out after starting outside the front row, gradually moving forward to cross the pacemaker Sign No More which had worked three wide from gate four to lead running into the first turn. Once at the head of affairs, Clark Griswold raced by the Harrison family, coasted for the rest of the journey to blitz his rivals by a margin of 16.8 metres in a rate of 200.2 from Sign No More which battled on gamely, with Sophie Gorgeous running on late from last to finish third. It was Clark Griswold's third victory in four race appearances. It Is I/Shy Star gelding Okelerho Lad trained by Matt was also a big winner of the Westvic Race Pix 3-Y-0 Pace over 2200 metres. Beginning brilliantly from the extreme draw, Craven wasted no time in sending Okelerho Lad forward to race outside the pole line leader Rockin Roger where he dictated the terms of the race. Surging to the front approaching the home turn, Okelerho Lad was too strong over the concluding stages to register a 4.3 metre margin in advance of the ex-Kiwi Ark first up on Australian soil (three wide - one/two - three wide last lap to be outside the winner on the final bend) and Game Cullen which followed the pacemaker. The mile rate 159.6. Burrumbeet trainer Ashleigh Herbertson's much improved four year old It Is I/But Ler Raine mare Its Raining was the middle pin, when successful in the Nat's Rug And Harness Repair Vicbred Pace for C0 class over 2200 metres. Sent forward from gate six to park outside the leader Raw Steel (gate two), Its Raining outstayed her rivals to score by a huge 32.9 metres over Extra (behind leader - one/one last lap) and Linora Dawn (three back the markers) in a rate of 1-59.5.

Top day ■ It was a great day for the Western District, with Great Western based owner/trainer Michael Gadsden landing the Moore Bulk Haulage Pace for C1 class over 1700 metres with seven year old Village Jasper/ Tennessee Songbird gelding Xavier Jack in a rate of 2-01. Driven by Denbeigh Wade, Xavier Jack led from gate three, running his rivals ragged to score by 6.1 metres from a death-seating Longtan Tigerman and Nicmac Bromac (three back the markers). It was Xavier Jack's first victory since November 2012.

Classy ■ Redan's Michael Stanley produced a nice type in Big Spending Telf, a colt by Changeover from Super Telf (a half brother to metropolitan class pacer Magical Telf) to take the Betta Electrical Horsham 2-Y-0 Pace over 1700 metres on debut. Allowed to find his feet from gate two with Wotplanetrufrom (gate four) leading, Stanley put the foot to the floor once balanced and Big Spending Telf showed exceptional speed to lead racing for the bell. Challenged strongly by Frostyflyer approaching the home turn which had been outside him for the final circuit and almost crossed, Big Spending Telf rallied like a good horse on straightening to draw clear in the shadows of the post and register a 5 metre victory in 2-00.7, with Shadow Spar (one/ one) third.

Defiance ■ At Geelong on Tuesday, Peter Manning was successful with Jeremes Jet/Glowing Angel gelding Jereme Jetsetter in the 3rd Heat of the Empire Stal-

lions Vicbred Super Series for 2-Y-0 Colts & Geldings over 2100 metres. Driven by daughter Kerryn, Jereme Jetsetter led for the greater portion of the journey from gate four and despite racing greenly at times, defied all challengers to score from Valens which raced outside him for the last lap and Rule Of Thumb (four back the markers) in a rate of 2-01.3.

Safe start ■ Charlton based trainer Barry Ainsworth and reinsman son Ashley combined to land the Bunnings Horsham Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2200 metres at Horsham on Monday June 16 with 4Y-0 Majestic Son/Steffi Jay gelding Jaden Gil. Beginning safely to settle five back along the markers in a strung out field with Looks A Moral leading, Jaden Gil was taken three wide on the home turn and finished too well for Lochlee Jacob (three back the markers) which led on turning, with Looks A Moral holding down third. The mile rate 2-06.2.

Strong ■ At Shepparton on Wednesday, Bunbartha trainer Brian Bourke's 9Y-0 Wind Cries Maori/ Starlights Silver gelding Starlight Lee scored a shock victory in the Hicks Stable & Steel Construction Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2190 metres. Coming from 10metres, reinsman Danny Ferris had Starlight Lee beautifully possied one/one throughout the race and after being eased three wide on the home turn, ran home strongly to score at Supertab odds of $52.20, defeating the pacemaker Mands Evie by 1.4 metres in a rate of 2-05.4, with Yankee Mara (five wide home turn) coming from a mile back to finish third.

■ Yankee Mara, Bella Sainz, Alina, Another Jasper, Frostyflyer, Kilbirnie North View, Ark.

Possied mid-field ■ Kyneton part-owner/trainer Barry Turner scored a belated victory with 4-Y-0 Northern Luck/Dahabu gelding Bucksaroo at Maryborough on Thursday, taking out the Courtney Conway @ Redwood Saturday Pacers Handicap for C0 class over 2190 metres. Driven by Shepparton based Rebecca Bartley, Bucksaroo starting from barrier four on the second line possied mid-field in the running line, with the pole marker Another Approval leading. Taken wide on straightening, Bucksaroo came with a flashing burst of speed to register a 5.6 metre victory over Kitty Fisher which raced in the open from the bell, with Wheres Paddy (three wide last lap) third. The mile rate 2-06.

Michael in the sulky ■ Former Kilmore trainer Wayne Potter now based at Avenel, snared Heat 5 of the Empire Stallions Vicbred Super Series for 3-Y-0 Colts & Geldings over 2190 metres at the Shepparton Trots on Wednesday June 18 with in-form Four Starzzz Shark/Cedar Valley gelding Frankie Valley. With Ararat's Michael Bellman again in the sulky, Frankie Valley starting inside the second line settled three back along the markers, with the NSW visitor Major Rules burning out from gate five to lead. Using the sprint lane, Frankie Valley finished hard to gain the day by a half neck over Master Mach Manus which trailed the leader from the pole, before easing to be one/one racing for the bell and three wide on the final bend, with Raylan Gibbins running on late for third from well back at the bell. The mile rate 1-58.2.

Winner from Avenel ■ Another Avenel winner on the day was 3-Y-0 Four Starzzz Shark/Lombo Heart Beat gelding Bryce Cooper for David Aiken in the Ausure Insurance Brokers Pace for C1 class over 1690 metres in a 1-57 mile rate. A recent stable addition, Bryce Cooper raced by the Painting family from Narrandera and driven by Shepparton's Bec Bartley, led throughout from the pole to account for Readyforreign which trailed, easing to the outside on straightening, with Eliska (one/one) third.

In fine fettle ■ Euroa's Cameron Maggs has Modern Art/ Badlandsdreamkacha colt Feeling Arty racing in fine fettle and captured the 5th Heat of the Vicbred Super Sires Series for 2-Y-0 Colts & Geldings over 2190 metres at Shepparton with him. Beginning brilliantly from gate five, Feeling Arty led throughout, running his rivals ragged to score 16 metres in a rate of 2-00.6 from Waves On Fire off a three wide trail last lap from last and Thebackpagescribe (one/one).

Landed first heat ■ Parwan trainer/driver Jodi Quinlan landed the 1st Heat of the Empire Stallions Vicbred Super Series for 2-Y-0 Trotting Colts & Geldings over 2100 metres with Illawong Armstrong, a gelded son of Majestic Son and Lunar Landing. Settling with most of the field ahead of him from the extreme draw, Illawong Armstrong gained a beaut three wide trail home on the back of Glintintheeye ahead of him in the last lap and despite making the home turn four wide, rushed to the wire at a great rate to defeat Black Valley (four back the markers) by 6.7 metres in a rate of 2-06.2, with Glintintheeye third.
