RESIDENTS in the Black Saturday fire-affected region say they are being denied the opportunity to appear before the Royal Commission that was touted by Premier John Brumby as being the ‘people’s’ inquiry. Bernard Teague (pictured), Chairman of the Commission, last week outlined the work of the hearing over the next year, and says written submissions may still be made by affected parties.

Mr Teague and his two fellow Commissioners have made informal visits to a large number of communities in the bushfire regions over past weeks. Residents in each location were invited to speak with Commisisoners, and raise matters for discussion. But State Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu says the Commission has been hijacked by government agencies and big business. He said the Premier, John Brumby, has pledged that everyone would be able to have their say. Mr Brumby said it was not to place of a Premier to tell a Royal Commission how to conduct its business. Tim Tobin SC, who is leading a class action, alleges that five of the fires started as a result of poorly-maintained powerlines, He told the Commissioners that residents are missing out on an oportunity to appear and testify.

ABOUT THE PHOENIX There is no better symbol for the spirit of the people of this region that the Phoenix. The phoenix is a mythical sacred firebird with a tail of beautiful gold and red plumage (or purple and blue). It has a 500 to 1,000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of myrrh twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes. From those ashes, a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible — it is also said that it can heal a person with a tear from its eyes and make them temporarily immune to death. The phoenix is a symbol of fire and divinity

SALUTE ON OUR SPECIAL DAY
■ Wow! What a powerful and stirring ANZAC weekend across the bushfire-affected region. There were dawn services at a number of locations including Kilmore, Glenburn, Seymour, Puckapunyal and Kinglake. We chose the 5.30am servicein the grounds of St Peter’s Community World War I Memorial Church at Kinglake, held in association with the Yea-Kinglake RSL sub-branch. Hundreds of people attended this moving inaugural service.
Eerie sight ■ It was surreal to view the night lights of Melbourne through the burnt trees on the Bald Spur at Kinglake where the church building was burnt out on Black Saturday Parish Priest, Rev. Stephen Holmes, himself an ex-serviceman, said this was probably the first time in 60 years that such a site existed. A firing party dressed in military period costume, fired blank ammunition into the crisp morning sky as part of the salute, overseen by YeaKinglake RSL President Ken Howson.

● Fleur Long and our son James ■ ANZAC Day is a special time for our family. Fleur and I remember, with pride, the war service of our late fathers. Fleur’s Dad, Bill Tunzi, served with the 2/14 in World War II, and died too young at Whitttlesea at age 49 in 1966. My Dad, Jim Long, served with 2/4 Army Field Workshops in the Middle East and Bandiana, and died too young at age 66 in 1987. We are proud of my Mum Marjory’s service with the AWAS at Bandiana, and Isobell Tunzi’s service as a nurse. Our son, James, continues the tradition. He is a soldier based at Tonwsville, and has completed tours including East Timor (twice) and Iraq. James’s early years were at Murrindindi, Flowerdale and Yea, and his secondary school years were at Ivanhoe Grammar School - Plenty (Mernda). ■ Speaking of James, he is about to become a Dad any day now. His wife Sarah is due about May 2 - so your scribe could be on a plane to FNQ at short notice!
Big day at Marysville ● Lorraine and Ken Hewson Limousines, based at South Morang, and has a long association with the region. He ran Whittlesea Taxi Service for many years in the 1980s. Our family business used Norm’s services every week for a number of years, when we ran the Yea, Kinglake and Whitt-
lesea Chronicle newspapers from 19841993. Norm was at the Kinglake dawn service, and later in the day at the Whittlesea march. Norm is also known for transporting older diggers around the ANZAC march in the City.

● At the Kinglake dawn service: Alan Brown of Moreton Island, Queensland, who has been a volunteer at Kinglake for some weeks; Norm Cove, whose VIP Limousines company is well known throughout the Whittlesea region; and Malcolm Fudge of Seaford, who has been organising material donations, including the super-size flagpole at St Peter’s.
● Angus Houston ■ We are told that a copy of The Phoenix Newspaper has been shown to Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston, Chief of the Defence Force, as an example of the unified spirit of recovery of the people of the bushfire affected area. We’re chuffed.
At home ■ One of the ‘visitors’ to Saturday’s ANZAC Day service at Yea was Margaret Telfer, now of Bundaberg, Qld. Margaret was accompanied by her husband who was trying to familiarise himself with the southern climate. She fondly recalled days at the Yea school in Station St, and children taunting a Chinese grocer in the early days.
Paperwork
● It was an especially moving time at Marysville on Saturday where ANZAC observances were held. There was close affinity with the local families who lost 34 residents on Black Saturday.

BRIDGEWORKS AHEAD
■ The historic Hazeldene bridge at Flowerdale is to be upgraded after it sustained damaged in the Black Saturday fires. Plans are underway for the works which are expected to take three weeks, with the bridge being closed weekdays, 9am-4.30pm, in late June. “The works will involve replacement of theexisting timber deck and railing with a new concrete deck and new steel barrier rails,” a Murrindindi Shire spokesman said. “The benefits will be that the bridge is safer for vehicle and pedestrians and will have long-life components which will greatly reduce future bridge maintenance and the associated closures.” The project is currently being tendered and it is hoped that a contractor will be appointed by early next month.
Briefs Confirmed
■ Clinical psychologist Rob Gordon will visit Marysville at 10.30am this Saturday (May 2). He has been helping communities recover from disasters for the past 20 years. He will share examples from other events.
FLOWERDALE HOTEL
It is uncertain whether heavy vehicles will be able to cross the bridge duringt the contract period. “Pedestrian access will be maintained at all time, although details of how this is to be achieved is still to be determined through discussion with potential contractors. “It is expected that a separate temporary crossing will be provided by the contractor.” Meanwhile, representatives from the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority last Tuesday met with Flowerdale residents, Vicurban and the Institute of Architects. “The community wants to take an active role in determining the future of Flowerdale,” said Peter Williams. “The community spirit that has become stronger since the fires needs to be built on and maintained.”

Dolly celebrates, again
● Miss Dolly McLeish ■ Yea local, Miss Dolly Mcleish, has just celebrated her 90th birthday - for the second time! An afternoon party was held for her at the home of Sandy McLeish on Sunday, April 24, with a lovely birthday cake being supplied by Don McLeish and his wife. Miss McLeish was born at the golf course, then later moved to her current residence with ‘just-as-sprightly’ 87-year-old sister Myrtle. Both ladies admit to having lived a quiet life, without drink and not the slightest inclination to trying cigarettes. When asked what their secret of youthful looks was, they both replied: no family worries and leading a clean, quiet life. All their family lived into their 90s too! Dolly learned dressmaking in her younger years, and a “bit of knitting” for the Save The Children’s Fund. Both ladies attended a senior citizens’ card afternoon once but said “it took all afternoon to play one game - it wasw too slow for us”. Dolly said she used to enjoy reading, but in recent years her eyesight has been failing her. ■ Footnote: What’s all this about 90 again? A well meaning relative got the dates mixed up last year, and threw the first 90th birthday party in 1983, so we hear. Happy birthday anyway.
Tree planting at K’lake ■ Some 600 trees will be planted at Kinglake on the land around the new Kinglake Community Centre, child care centre and infant welfare centre. The tree planting will be partly funded by Victoria’s 150th Anniversary Board. The aim is to make maximum use of landfill from the building activities, control erosion and enhance the area. The tree plating will begin after construction of the community centre is finished later this year.
Accidents at Easter ■ Two accidents were reported by Police during Easter. A young girl received serious injuries in a collision on the Melba Hwy, east of Miller St, Uea, on Good Friday. Her name is Karen Haines of Gruyere. She was transferred to Preston and Northcote Community Hospital. Shire supervisor Mr David Gorman was inadvertently struck by a vehicle at Kalatha Creek Bridge. Mr Gorman was erecting road signs when the accident happened on Thursday, April 19.

KINGLAKE: HUNDREDS GATHER AT DAWN
■ Major-General John Cantwell AO, Chief Operations Officer of the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, gave the address at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service held on Saturday, attended by several hundred people. The service in brisk but comfortable weather was led by the Rev. Stephen Holmes, assisted by church warden Peter Crook. Military ceremony was co-ordinated by officers of the Yea-Kinglake RSL Sub-Branch, led by President Ken Hewson, with a catafalque party from HMAS Cerberus. The solemn proceedings had added poignancy because of the recent deaths in the Black Saturday fires less than three months ago. Amongst those laying wreaths was Fran Bailey, MHR for McEwen. A guard of honour was staged, and a firing party offered its salute. The assembled sand God Save The Queen and Advance Australia Fair. The Ode preceded the Last Post, followed by one’s minute’s sacred silence, the rouse (reveille), a Piper’s Lament, and the Australian and New Zealand flags raised. Major-General Cantwell said: On this day in 1915, in the darkness before dawn, the Australian and New Zealand Army Crops began their assault on the Gallipoli Peninsula, with the aim of opening the way to the Turkish capital then known as Constantinople. It began quietly at around 1am when 1500 men from the 9th, 10th and 11th Battalions of the AIF clambered down from battleships into their landing craft, several kilometres off shore. These were to be the first wave of the beach assault. When the moon set around 3am small steam boats took the landing craft in tow and struck out across a calm sea, due east into the darkness. Dawn was due at 4am and the attack was meant to surprise the Turkish defenders as the sun rose. But the battleships and landing craft had been spotted by the enemy as early as 2am. Turkish soldiers were hastily awakened in the darkness and occupied their trenches. Reserve troops were placed on standby. Shortly before 4am, landing craft cast off from the steam boats and the men began rowing the final stretch of the beach. Lieutenant Colonel Weir, the Commanding Officer of the 10th Battalion, noted in his diary that all was silent except for the splashing of the oars, but about 30 metres from the beach there was a single rifle shot from the hill above the beach, immediately followed by heavy rifle and machine-gun fire. The men rowed a further 15 metres or so before it became shallow enough to get out of the boats, which were the focus of the enemy fire. It was 4.15am. It was the moment they had been trained and primed for. With shouted orders and their own cries, the men scrambled over the sides of the boats into metre-deep water. The seabed was covered in rounded slippery stones, causing many to stumble and fall. Intense machine gun fire raked the boats, the waterline and the beach as the men came ashore. Men began to die.\ Others ran from the shallows, taking cover behind a low bank where they shook the sewater and sand from their rifles and fixed bayonets. The platoons and companies were badly mixed up and there was a tremendous noise of firing and screams. Despite this, Weir and other officers ordered an advannce and groups of men sprang up, and began to charge up the first steep slope. One of the platoon commanders who survived the day wrote that “it was mad, wild, thrilling. We charged up a hill so steep we could barely scramble. There was no holding the men”. Fifteen minutes later, pulling themselves through coarse thorny bushes and intense enemy fire, the Australians reached the first Turkish trenches. It was bayonets and handto-hand fighting. Meanwhile, the enemy reached a new intensity as the second wave of 2500 men rowed into sight, and they began taking terrible casualties even before they reached the shore.
● Lt Bec Russell, formerly of Launceston, Tasmania, now of HMAS Cerberus, aide-de-camp to Major-General John Cantwell AO, Chief Operations Officer of the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, at Kinglake The deadly and exhausting fighting continued through the day. Some Turkish trenches were seized, others held. Some objectives were reached but many were not. By the end of that fateful day, more than 2000 ANZACs lay dead. A week later, the number of ANZACs killed or wounded was 6500. By the time the campaign ended some eight months later, almost 8000 Australians and 2500 New Zealanders were killed, and more than 25,000 were wounded. The courage and determination of those original ANZACs at Gallipoli stirred in Australia a remarkable sense of pride and nationhood, despite it then only being 14 years since Federation. Australians began to see themselves in a new light, as an independent nation with a very independent character. This view of ourselves, and the world’s view of us, continues to this day. Following that first landing at ANZAC Cove 94 years ago today, tens of thousands of Australians went on to fight through years of appalling trench warfare in what became known as The Great War of 1914-18. Later, they foughtr the Second World War of 1939-45 in places as far removed as Europe, the deserts of Africa, the jungles of Asia and New Guinea, and hostile seas and skies across the globe. And in the period since that war Australians
have fought in Korea, Borneo, Malaya, Vietnam, East Timor, the Solomon Islands, Iraq, Afghanistan, and in dozens of difficult peace keeping missions all over the world. Even as we stand here today, groupd of Australian service men and women serving overseas will pause in their duties today to likewise gather and reflect and pay silent tribute to all those Australians who have served their nation, and suffered death and life changingwounds. They will be joined by thousands of ordinary Australians, young and old, across the country and around the world., to recognise and praise those who have sacrificed all for our freedoms. In doing so, we renew our pride in being Australian, and pledge ourseloves to keep alive the sense of responsibility and mateship which are the hallmarks of Australians everywhere, whether they are threatened by war or natural disaster. The ANZACs showed us these qualities. We have within us the ability to face our challeneges and overcome the,. To put our mates and our community before ourseloves, to be courageous, determined and strong. We should be proud of that heritage. This is the spirit of ANZAC - a spirit that we cherish and must pass to the next generations. Lest We Forget.

To The Editor I have been in touch with the Red Cross as well as the Department of Human Services Victoria via email in regards to a demountable building I have for sale at cost for victims of the bushfires. I have left my contact details and have not had any replies as yet. I am not in a position of offer it as a complete donation, but am offering it at cost. It seems nobody is interested or the emails are not getting through to the correct channels. I heard Lindsay Fox on the TV after the bushfires saying he would do whatever he could to help, so here's one for him. I live in Queensland. I have got a 2M x 3.3M relocatable demountable here, brand new, 1 bedroom with built-in ward-
robe, kitchen with overheads and full stove, breakfast bar, lounge area, shower, toilet, laundry trough doubles as wash basin, vinyl floor covers, vertical blinds, wall fans, security screen door and insect screens, power points, all set to go. It would make a great live in while-you-build house, bigger and better than a caravan, then would make an ideal granny flat, farm accom. later. Cost is $42,000 including GST. This type of demountable retails for $58,000. It is the transport which would be an extra cost but maybe with a few contacts, it could be back loaded via tilttray truck. I am happy to pay for an ad to go into the paper if you think this would be the way to go. Or maybe you have another

Spotlight on St Andrews
Expert to Floweerdale
■ Two-year-old Sam Buckler, his mum Sonja Parkinson, 44, and father Colin Buckler, 54, who survived the fires at St Andrews are featured in the April issue of the Australian Women’s Weekly magazine. “Whjen our house was burning, the roof and attic about to fall in, we ran out the front door, knowing we had no choice but to take our chances outside. I thought then we were going to die,” Sonja says. A small group of neighbours - and a pair of lyrebirds - took shelter at the home.
Kinglake radio moves
■ The ABC’s participation in the Kinglake Ranges community radio station may conclude in the next month. Details are uncertain but it is believed that the natonal broadcaster will hand over the reins to the FM station to the local group who will run the station from the Kinglake Neighbourhood House. The station currently has a breakfast program by Louise Fitzroy which is produced from the Southbank studios, and Simon Rogers is in Kinglake for the morning show. Louise visited Kinglake last week, and cooked ANZAC biscuits at the Murrindindi Shire offices kitchen.
