NOTES FROM THE EDITOR I just want to say thank you to everyone who has emailed or called in support of the SPOTLIGHT. The support is very encouraging, and helps us to stay motivated to our purpose. I never realized just how many events I have actually missed from lack of information. It’s amazing to see how much San Angelo has to offer. My husband and I used to sit and ask ourselves, “What are we going to do today?” Now we can pick up the SPOTLIGHT and ask ourselves, “How are we going to fit this all in today?” I think that we take this city for granted. There are not that many cities that thrive on a community like our special town does. I cannot wait for the SPOTLIGHT to start putting on events as well. We have so many ideas and grand schemes in store for you that it is hard to contain it all. So again I want to say thank you for all your support, and spreading the word.

Hello San Angelo! How about them Cowboys, no I’m serious, “HOW ABOUT THEM COWBOYS”? Seriously, what is going on, are they ever going to win a game? If they don’t shape up and start playing like Americas team this is going to turn into one long season! Okay, I’m a diehard cowboy fan and I’ve been one since the day I was born. I’ve never jumped on the band wagon for the team that was hot at the moment. I, like many of you out there, are true fans through thick and thin. However, it’s getting really hard to remain that way. One can only withstand so many ulcers...I mean I have my health to think about here. Would life be easier if I jumped ship and started to go for another team? What about the Packers or the Patriots? I know Sundays would be a lot easier if I could just go for the Colts. Yeah that’s it; I should become a trader to my team and go for someone else. What am I talking about, that is completely outrageous and utterly impossible!!! I’m a Cowboy fan all the way, and to stop routing for my boys is similar to losing a loved one. What I’m saying is families may fight, they may hate each other to the core, but they will never stop loving each other, and that is exactly how I feel about MY team. So how about it Cowboys can you please, and I beg you please start playing like my, nay our, or even better yet the team America fell in love with. So come on guys... Fun Restaurant Facts The word "restaurant" comes from the French word "restaurant" which means to restore. A restaurant restores or refreshes us with food and drink. The first restaurant is said to have opened in France by M. Boulanger, a soup maker by profession in 1765.
In the year 2004, an average of just under $1000 was spent per person on restaurant food. The majority of restaurant workers are on an hourly wage system. The majority of restaurants are independently owned.
Seattle, Washington is the location of the first revolving restaurant, built in 1961. Horn and Hardarts is the first automat that opened in 1902. With a name like Bugota, the local modern-rock band is sure to surprise listeners with more than what first meets the eye. Friendly, funny and somewhat shy, the quad transforms on stage into a hard, edgy, eclectic force all of its own. Originally a cover band jamming favorites from Green Day, Sublime, Stone Temple Pilots and Breaking Benjamin, Bugota is now venturing into what they consider a turning point. “We can play cover songs all day long,” said frontman Charles Reyes, “but we added another layer when we started writing our own music. Our original music is a different sound.” And so far the crowds like what they hear. The four-man blend includes Reyes (lead vocals & guitar), Jerrod Thomas (lead guitar & vocals), Chayne Roland (bass guitar) and Scott Clark (drums). All hail from the Concho Valley. Reyes and Thomas attended Central High School together, and in 2002 founded the band after playing gigs with fellow local rockers from The Strays. As with most bands, Bugota experienced adjustments of its members over the years, but has found its nitch in the local rock community. They have performed at nearly every San Angelo club, bar and venue, with Steel Penny Pub and Oasis as their most common stomping ground. Now expanding their reach to outside the Concho Valley and beyond, they are ready for regional recognition. While mainly performing progressive, modern hard rock, Bugota music features hints of blues, radio rock and even borderline country to its mix. “If you listen to our early stuff and then what we’re doing now, you can see the transition,” said bass guitarist Roland. “Just trying to figure out where we sit.” “Everybody in the band has different influences, from Metallica and Tool to Christian rock to Stevie Ray Vaughn,” adds Roland. “So when we’re putting together new work, we combine all our inspirations and create some really killer songs.” The results include their often requested “Rusty Peppermint”, “Comatose” and “Loaded Gun”. Bugota’s original-written music is as loaded as the story behind its name – fun, edgy, and a touch of smart-ass. “Bugota comes from an inside joke…a Tshirt actually. Ask us about it when you come to one of our performances,” said Reyes. “We later decided to make the word an acronym. Naturally, we rested upon Butt Ugly Guys On The Attack,” he admits. With one CD, Pennies are Pulled, under their belt, the band is now in the midst of their second album, Relayed Deaction. Bugota recently hooked up with Gary Laney, a producer who previously worked with a handful of wellknown artists in Nashville. They hope their connections, hard work and passion for music will take them far. “You’ll know from our performance that we have a lot of fun. You’ll laugh your butt off,” said Reyes. The group also believes in community support, having volunteered their music skills at fundraisers for St. Jude, Fallen Firefighters, and more. “We appreciate the support that the San Angelo community has given us,” Reyes said. “So we want to give back and support the community in return.” Bugota will perform live Friday, Sept. 24 at Float 404 and Saturday, Sept. 25 at Fiddlestring’s Sports Bar. Other upcoming shows include their annual performance at Oasis’ Halloween costume contest bash on Oct. 30.
