VOM PHOTO pozwala przyjrzeć się nowym, ale już znaczącym zjawiskom na scenie młodej sztuki europejskiej. Artyści biorący udział w wystawie kwestionują fundamentalne zasady fotografii jako medium, by na nowo odkryć jej potencjał.

W kontekście dominacji kultury wizualnej, fotografia artystyczna narażona jest na ryzyko mariażu ze światem reklamy i lifestylu. Jeśli istnieją sposoby na uniknięcie tej pułapki, jakie procesy i techniki są do tego niezbędne?

Wystawa dokumentuje różne w swej ostrości spojrzenia na aktualne praktyki artystyczne. W ten sposób kwestionuje prawo do ochrony fotografii jako instytucji.

Ta „sztuczność” fotografii może być istotnym punktem wyjścia dla działań krytycznych, ale nie celem samym w sobie.

W fotografii zawsze istniała tendencja do traktowania obrazu zaledwie jako efektu – tendencja, w której doskonałość stylu czy gatunku prowadzi do zubożenia zamiast zwiększenia jej ekspresyjnej mocy. VOM PHOTO provides an insight into the vital young and emerging European art scene.

Its those participants who fundamentaly challenge the medium of photography to accurately activate its potential.

In the context of a thoroughly visual culture, artistic photography runs the risk of finding itself lumped with advertising and lifestyle features. If there are ways of avoiding that trap, what processes and techniques do they require?

The exhibition documents different points of view – some in sharper focus than others – on current artistic practice. In doing so, it renounces the security of photography as an institution.

The “artificiality”of photography may be its critical starting point, but it is not an end in itself. There has always been a trend in photography to treat the image as a mere result, a trend in which the perfection of a style or genre has led to the depletion rather than an increase of expressive force. Photography may have gone off track, but it may be able to redefine itself in the wilderness.

Konceptualne podejście do fotografii, a także otwarty i eksperymentalny charakter VOM PHOTO sprawiły, że projekt wpisał się idealnie w działania Medialabu Katowice. Współpracę z Akademią Sztuki Mediów w Kolonii rozpoczęliśmy w listopadzie 2012 roku, organizując na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Katowicach wykład, a następnie warsztaty, w których wzięło udział kilkanaście osób z różnych środowisk.

VOM PHOTO’s conceptual approach to photography as well as its open and experimental nature proved to be a perfect addition to the range of projects pursued by Medialab Katowice. We started our collaboration with the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne in November 2012 by organising a lecture and then workshops at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice attended by several participants with different backgrounds.

Currently, in addition to dozens of works by artists from seven countries, we present a special project catalogue, published by Cologne’s Walther König publishing house, which became the subject of a creative reinterpretation

by Medialab workshop participants. We hope that they will make a significant contribution to the discussion on the photographic medium undertaken by the curators.

VOM PHOTO zajmuje się zagadnieniem postaw wobec fotografii.

Rezygnując z koncentracji na aparacie fotograficznym i zdjęciach jako takich, wystawa pozwala spojrzeć na relacje, w jakie wchodzimy, angażując się w proces tworzenia fotografii. VOM PHOTO dotyczy działań, które mogą prowadzić do powstania obrazu lub czasem czegoś zgoła odległego od obrazu. Dzięki temu nie dokumentuje osobowości artysty lub pojedynczej opowieści, ale szereg procesów, które niekoniecznie prowadzą do powstania modelowego efektu w formie obrazu.

VOM PHOTO deals with attitudes to photography. Focussing neither on the camera nor on photographs as such, the exhibition looks at the relationships we enter into when we engage with the processes that include the photograph and its production, and it deals with the developments that can lead to an image or, alternatively, far away from it. Thus the exhibition does not document the personality of an artist or an individual story but a range of processes that do not necessarily always end in the exemplary product of an image. There has always been a trend in photography to treat the image as a mere result, a trend in which the perfection of a style or genre has led to the depletion rather than an increase of expressive force. The power of photography to preserve an ephemeral moment of perception has paradoxically given rise to the expectation that it be capable of conveying instant infinitely reproducible timelessness.

How do you take a picture of an object that’s invisible by itself and that reflects everything around it? People who want to sell their mirrors on Ebay have to deal with exactly that problem. Johannes Bendzulla collected the most exciting results of this photographic experiment to show the artistic quality of these totally non-artistic photographs.

What defines an edition? Within the pages of Demian Bern’s series of 10 handmade artist books you are able to follow the whole production of the books. You see the artist going to the forest. You see him putting up a generator and a computer, printing the pages, binding them, gluing them to the hardcover and finally you see him meeting the hunter, who loads the weapon in order to shoot a bullet through all the ten books. In the end the bullet gets stuck in the last copy.

The book itself seems to be empty. No content seems to appear. 60 euro for a couple of cardboard sheets. The value seems to be fictive and so is the story that appears just on the inside cover of the book. But Cella’s publication documents a huge transfer that has taken place: to get space for his own work, all the visual décor of Salzburg’s Central Hotel was stored in the warehouse of the exhibition space (“Kunstverein Salzburg”) and all the photographs he produced for the Kunstverein were installed at the hotel.

The sculpture “Ferdinand Homrich und Sohn Modell II” has come a long way. From a darkroom in eastern German in the 80s, where Vesko Gösel developed his photographs and used it as a cabinet for drying strips of photographic film, to his studio in Cologne in 2010, where he first started to deconstruct his old equipment to create a non-functional object.

The piece seems to refer to its own and the artist’s history. Within this exhibition, Gösel presents the third version of his sculpture hung on strips of 35 mm film material.

The “still films“ of Duesseldorf-based artist Adam Harrison use still photographs to present filmic image sequences that ask the viewer to look at the pictures in a durational manner. “Crosswalk. Duration: 44 Seconds” depicts a woman waiting at a crosswalk for the light to change. Presented on a black-painted strip 100 cm wide and 1100 cm long, the individual pictures are not evenly spaced as the distance between them relates to the time that has passed between the taking of individual shots. The first hanging of the works, at the opening reception, involves a performative action, wherein the strip is blank to start with and the photographs are installed in front of the viewers’ eyes at intervals determined by the temporal structure of each work. For Crosswalk, the viewing is slowed down to 1/16 of the original speed so that each second is represented as one minute.

Sascha Herrmann is a Leipzig based artist who presents a series of photographs in the exhibition. The title might be a great help to look at the surface of the picture. The artist looks at a blank photobook which is then photographed, reproduced, printed, bound in a new book. The artist again looks at a photobook but it is not empty anymore. This procedure is repeated three times and finally results in the book which is presented here by Düsseldorf-based artist David Kühne.

SZYMON REJMANIA (Germany) Bread for the world, 2010 Szymon Rejmania w pracy „Chleb dla świata” ukazuje budzące niepokój spojrzenie na tragedię 11 września, jedno z największych wydarzeń medialnych w historii. Sposób w jaki film został zmontowany przez artystę odnosi się do transmisji na żywo w dniu ataku. Film sprawia wrażenie braku podporządkowania jakiemukolwiek scenariuszowi w celu odzwierciedlenia sposobu relacjonowania tych wydarzeń przez media. Leipzig based artist Szymon Rejmania creates a disturbing view on one of the biggest media events ever, 9/11. The way the video has been edited by Rejmania refers to the live broadcast on that day. The video gives the impression that it does not follow any kind of script, in order to reflect the way the media covered the event that day. Rejmania and his world of bread dissolves in the endless patterns of bread and its reproductions.

PETER MILLER (U.S.A.) Lightning Bugs, 2008 Brat Petera Millera pomagał mu łapać świetliki, które wspólnie umieszczali na polaroidach w piwnicy. Polaroidy są zdjęciami pozytywowymi. His working mode is a productive form of paranoia, his method – an ongoing research-based focus that seeks to uncover the all-too-human reality behind events and images and the contexts in which they reside.

“Notat II” by Matthias Wollgast is a publication that shows the results of a research which explores the way photographic paper reacts to light filtered by different coloured foils .The outcome of the study is a grayscale that he uses for a special kind of camera-less photography he calls lumography.

19 Born 1981, Basile is a German photographer based in Cologne. His approach to photography as a social phenomenon has led him to participate in numerous exhibitions, give lectures and and collaborate on various book publications.

A believer in curatorship as a form of artistic expression, he has worked as a curator for many projects and exhibitions. He has recently been awarded the North Rhine-Westphalia’s Media Art Prize for Young Artists (Förderpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen für junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler).

Born 1984 in Lugosch, Romania, Alwin Lay is currently a student at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and guest student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf.

Since 2009, Lay has held a scholarship from Cusanuswerk Foundation as part of their artist support programme. His work has been on display in many locations accross Germany and beyond, e.g. Düsseldorf, Bonn, Cologne, Karlsruhe, Amsterdam and Antwerp.

INTERVIEW This interview took place for the first opening of VOM PHOTO in 2011 at the Federal Art and Exhibition Hall Bonn, in Germany. Marco Schröder a Cologne based philosopher in conversation with the two VOM PHOTO curators Alexander Basile & Alwin Lay.

Marco: Maybe you could start telling something about the title of the exhibition.

Alexander: So we directly start at a difficult point. “VOM PHOTO”. Alwin, you can explain the title in the best way.

Alwin: The title of the exhibition is based on the basic idea of personalizing photography as with a “Von” inside a name. So “VOM PHOTO” is beginning with a sentence which provokes further thinking and starts with the photography as an idea.

Marco: The “VOM” sounds a bit like everyday language.

Alwin: “VOM PHOTO” is a fragment where one wonders how it will go on and this is also exactly what many artistic positions in the exhibition are questioning. What is the general meaning of photography right now and how photography can go further or how can one continue working in the field, with which interfaces can one experiment?

Marco: It seems to be a bit like a summary. You want to give something like a conclusion or do something like stocktaking.

Alexander: Rather stocktaking. I find it exciting to see this for example in the work of G.Leddington.

We watched his work during night in Gent. We drove there, went through the atelier and came into the room where two pillars and two slide projectors, with a carousel, were standing opposite to each other. But without a magazine on it and the lenses were facing each other. They were standing very close to each other and the projectors were synchronized and switching in rotation from picture to picture, but actually there was no picture. I have seen the fetish of the machines in it, or a criticism of capitalism, so finally the content no longer plays a role. The main thing is that the pictorial space is somehow getting filled.

Furthermore the exhibition raises many other questions. For example, there are three or four works dealing with the idea of the mirror.

Alwin: But let’s go back to the question about the conclusion. I don’t think we had the ambition to present a development as a whole. We used the artists view for that approach.

Alexander: This was the most important point. We claim that there are just these two fundamental pillars.

Marco: Może na początek opowiecie o tytule wystawy.

Alexander: Więc zaczynamy od razu od trudnego pytania. VOM PHOTO. Alwin, ty najlepiej wyjaśnisz tytuł.

Alwin: Tytuł wystawy nawiązuje do idei personalizacji fotografii, jak w przypadku przyimka „von” przed nazwiskiem. Więc VOM PHOTO [dosłownie w języku niemieckim: ze zdjęcia – przyp. red.] rozpoczyna, inicjuje zdanie… prowokuje, skłania do przemyśleń i przywołuje fotografię jako pojęcie.

Marco: „VOM” brzmi trochę… jak z języka potocznego.

Alwin: VOM FOTO można potraktować jako moment refleksji nad przyszłością fotografii… a to temat wielu pytań zadawanych przez artystów podczas wystawy. Jaki jest obecnie ogólny sens fotografii? W jakim zmierza ona kierunku? W jaki sposób kontynuować pracę w tej dziedzinie? Z którymi aspektami fotografii eksperymentować? Itd. Marco: Wystawa wydaje się być swego rodzaju podsumowaniem. Waszą intencją jest być może formułowanie wniosków dotyczących stanu fotografii albo jakaś próba inwentaryzacji.

Alexander: Raczej inwentaryzacji. Ekscytująca jest możliwość obcowania z pracami G. Leddingtona. Oglądaliśmy jego dzieło nocą w Gandawie. Pojechaliśmy tam, przeszliśmy przez jego atelier i na końcu znaleźliśmy się w pomieszczeniu, w którym stały filary z dwoma zwróconymi do siebie karuzelowymi projektorami slajdów. Nie miały jednak magazynków. Stały bardzo blisko siebie i były zsynchronizowane tak, żeby jednocześnie wyświetlać kolejne obrazy, ale w rzeczywistości nie było obrazu. Widziałem w tym fetyszyzację maszyn, albo też krytykę kapitalizmu i zmierzch znaczenia treści. Najważniejsze jest to, że przestrzeń obrazowa ulega w jakiś sposób wypełnieniu. Wystawa budzi wiele innych jeszcze pytań. Fascynujące są na przykład prace zajmujące się pojęciem lustra – mamy trzy lub cztery wykorzystujące ten wątek.

Alwin: Wróćmy jednak do pytania o wnioski. Nie sądzę, żebyśmy mieli ambicję przedstawienia w sposób całościowy procesu rozwoju fotografii. My podjęliśmy próbę prezentacji poglądów wybranych do uczestnictwa w wystawie artystów.

Marco: Such as?

Alexander: On the one side this essayistic party snaps – mainly represented by the so-called “Vice-Photography".

Marco: You are talking about the Vice-Magazine.

Alexander: Exactly. These intensively charged and strongly aesthetic pictures that are nevertheless losing themselves somehow because they act completely separated and have a close relationship to the commercial culture. And the second pillar is this, how we call it, “large-format, topologic freezing” which should somehow paraphrase the Düsseldorf School. The intention was neither breaking with these Schools nor saying they are wrong.

The aim of “VOM PHOTO” is more about sending impulses leading into very different directions and I don’t even know if all the artists find themselves in the basic criticism. But this is not that important, there are these two pillars which can be nailed down because both of these Schools act simultaneously as an enormous propaganda machine. Even if it is not the intention of the individual photographers, there is a marketing machine in the background of the Düsseldorfer Schule with the purpose of moneymaking.

Marco: Art Market.

Alexander: With the art market, right. The “Vice School” is more related and focused to a mainstream market.

Marco: You knew the artists before or you were looking for the artists using this critical view? Or both?

Alwin: It was a mixture. I knew G.Leddington from the “Time to meet” festival in Antwerp. But both of us didn’t know about the work. We found several people on the tour in Leipzig.

There we already knew some people. We specifically searched for works and also knew approximately where to look for it.

Alexander: Let’s take for example Antje Günther, the only female artist. We watched the work and asked ourselves who did this. Then we visited her in her atelier we firstly didn’t say, “hi, we are curating a big exhibition here in Bonn”. Instead we wanted her to explain the work. In this process she often used expressions that we also mentioned in our discussions before. Antje Günther told us that she has a problem with the photography and a suggested title for our exhibition was “Problems with the photography”. It was good to see that artists are dealing with quite similar questions and issues.

Marco: Before the interview you told us that photography is visual and highlighted but simultaneously there is criticism on the pictorial. That is a paradoxical situation. You said that it is somehow a criticism on the visual with means of the visual.

Alwin: One could argue a bit with concrete photography which is similar to concrete painting that is only relating to itself and therefor has to eliminate itself before making a step forward.

Marco: To make the medium visible.

Alwin: Exactly, as the work “Supernova” by G.Leddington nicely shows, the use of a picture is abandoned. Two non-pictures which are getting shot on each other implode just as a light.

Marco: Czyli?

Alexander: Z jednej strony subiektywna, eseistyczna fotografia lifestylowa, reprezentowana głównie przez prace w stylu Vice.

Marco: Masz na myśli magazyn „Vice”.

Alexander: Oczywiście. Tak. Te silnie naładowane i epatujące estetyką zdjęcia, które nie są jednak wolne od pewnego zagubienia ze względu na oderwanie od kontekstu i ścisłe związki z kulturą komercyjną. Jest i drugi filar, który nazywamy „wielkoformatowym zamrożeniem topologicznym”, stanowiący w jakiś sposób parafrazę szkoły düsseldorfskiej [nazywanej również szkołą Becherów, od nazwiska małżeństwa Bernda i Hilli Becherów, wykonujących konceptualne serie obrazów obiektów przemysłowych – przyp. red.]. Nie zamierzaliśmy głosić zerwania z żadną tych szkół, nie twierdzimy też, że ich koncepcje są błędne. Celem VOM PHOTO jest raczej wysyłanie impulsów prowadzących w różnych kierunkach i nawet nie wiem, czy wszystkich artystów ze wspomnianych szkół dałoby się podporządkować tego rodzaju krytyce. Ale to nie jest ważne, istnieją te dwa wyróżnialne filary, przy czym obie szkoły działają jednocześnie jako część ogromnej machiny propagandowej. Nawet jeśli nie jest to intencją poszczególnych fotografów, w tle szkoły düsseldorfskiej funkcjonuje maszyna marketingowa nastawiona na zarabianie pieniędzy.

Marco: Rynek sztuki.

Alexander: Jeśli chodzi o rynek sztuki, to prawda, że szkoła Vice jest bardziej związana i skoncentrowana na rynku mainstreamowym.

Marco: Znaliście przedstawionych na wystawie artystów wcześniej, czy szukaliście ich według własnego klucza krytycznego? A może jedno i drugie?

Alwin: To była mieszanina. Znałem G. Leddingtona z festiwalu „Time to meet” w Antwerpii. Ale żaden z nas nie wiedział wcześniej o tej jego pracy, którą włączyliśmy do naszej wystawy. Znaleźliśmy kilka osób podczas wizyty w Lipsku, gdzie znaliśmy już paru artystów. Szukaliśmy przede wszystkim odpowiednich prac i mieliśmy ogólne pojęcie, gdzie możemy je znaleźć.

Alexander: Weźmy na przykład Antje Günther, jedyną kobietę w tym gronie. Oglądaliśmy jej pracę i zachodziliśmy w głowę, kto ją stworzył. Gdy odwiedziliśmy jej atelier, nie powiedzieliśmy od razu, że jesteśmy kuratorami dużej wystawy w Bonn. Najpierw poprosiliśmy o wyjaśnienie, o co chodzi w jej pracy. Omawiając ją, Antje często używała pojęć, które pojawiły się wcześniej w naszej rozmowie. Powiedziała nam, że ma problem z fotografią i zasugerowała, żeby wystawę zatytułować „Problemy fotografii”. Miło było się przekonać, że artystów zajmują podobne pytania i problemy.

Marco: Przed wywiadem powiedziałeś, że fotografia jest dziedziną wizualną, ale jednocześnie podkreśliłeś, że obraz podlega krytyce. To paradoksalna sytuacja. Powiedziałeś, że to jest rodzaj krytyki tego, co wizualne, z wykorzystaniem środków wizualnych.

Alwin: Można zaryzykować stwierdzenie, że fotografia konkretna, podobna w swej naturze do malarstwa konkretnego, zawiera wyłącznie odniesienia do samej siebie i musi się sama wyeliminować, zanim będzie mogła uczynić krok do przodu.

Alexander: But it can also go further because there are also works that are working especially through the picture. The work of Ben Van den Berghe, a video-work, in which he deals with the question if or how far the exceptional situation can influence or change the real situation. He clearly uses the mentioned imagery and highlights it as well. Carefully speaking, parts of the works have a formal approach and others are specifically using the means of a picture to work on this question. Thinking of the work “Bonanza“ by Moritz Frei, which was recorded by a video camara in nightvision-mode, showing a barren laundry room including a tumble dryer which starts to spin after some time and begins to walk like R2d2 from Star Wars. This is a quite cautious work and its intention is not to explain the world, I think. Nevertheless, in my opinion the work reflects, in its own and very special way, the internal dynamics of things. The exhibition opens many levels, which was very important for us. A variety of opportunities, far away from photo-mainstream. This is a certain propaganda and also the artists feel exposed by this. But it is hard to avoid this. No matter how much own drive you have, or what kind of picture or sound you have in your mind, you are getting constantly flooded by audiovisual trash. We had some discussions about whether we should write that we want to break with these traditions as a part of our press release, but you cannot really break with them at all. We are writing about “separation” and if you separate something you still have parts of the adhesive strip. It would be mad to claim not to be influenced by the Vice School or the Düsseldorfer School, consciously or unconsciously. One doesn’t want to break. Breaking also means to destroy something.

Marco: This is a bit dialectically. Tradition only makes sense when dealing with it or when turning against it. It is a tradition to deal with it in a critical way.

You told us [to Alwin] that the federal art hall has a pedagogical standard, an educational mandate. You had some discussions because the artists or you should explain your plans. How it is gone?

Alwin: I think nobody interfered in our work and told us that the exhibition has to be didactical.

Regarding the former exhibitions in this building, I believe that it represents the requirement of the house.

Marco: And the explanation of the artists themselves – are there writings about the artworks in the exhibition?

Alwin: We decided to abandon all texts in the publication, as well as in the exhibition, but the works are equipped with the necessary information and the viewer can read and know to whom it belongs to. And by using the publication one can get insights into the biographies. But we wanted to make sure that the focus is on the work itself, without a package leaflet beside.

Alexander: This would be difficult as well. I’m sure that Alwin and I wouldn’t interpret the works in a complete different way, but there are different swings. This is also the chance of such works. It shouts outwards, there is resonance, but it is still not there. At first it is sending signals. And I think that none of the artists are interested in an explanation at this point.

What wants Moritz Frei explain with his tumble dryer? In our position as currators we would get into a terrible mess.

Alwin: Moritz Frei also has a work including 8 pictures in the exhibition, 30×40, the frames are empty, but filled with passe-partout which are printed with a collection of questions and interviews.

Alexander: … With artists and photographers.

Artysta wyraźnie korzysta z obrazu i podkreśla jego użycie. Dokładnie rzecz biorąc, część prac cechuje formalne podejście, podczas gdy inne wykorzystują obraz jako sposób prowadzenia narracji. Przychodzi mi na myśl dzieło Moritza Freia pt. „Bonanza” – wykonane kamerą wideo w trybie „night vision” nagranie przedstawia pustą pralnię. Znajdująca się w niej suszarka bębnowa włącza się w pewnym momencie i po jakimś czasie zaczyna chodzić jak R2D2 z Gwiezdnych Wojen. To jest dość ostrożna praca i jego celem nie jest, jak myślę, wyjaśnienie praw rządzących światem. Niemniej jednak, moim zdaniem odzwierciedla ona w sposób własny i wyjątkowy wewnętrzną dynamikę rzeczy. Wystawa ma kilka poziomów, co było dla nas bardzo ważne. Sygnalizuje wiele możliwości rozwoju z dala od głównego nurtu fotografii. Jest to swego rodzaju indoktrynacja, która może stwarzać pewien dyskomfort. Poczucie obnażenia.. Ale trudno tego uniknąć.

Bez względu na to, ile masz wewnętrznej energii, a także jaki rodzaj obrazu lub dźwięku masz w głowie, jesteś stale zalewany audiowizualną szmirą. Dyskutowaliśmy o tym, czy powinniśmy napisać w informacjach prasowych, że chcemy odrzucić te tradycje, ale tak naprawdę całkowite zerwanie z nimi jest niemożliwe. Piszemy o „separacji”, ale jeśli coś się rozdziela, i tak pozostają fragmenty taśmy klejącej. Byłoby szaleństwem twierdzenie, że nie jest się pod wpływem szkoły Vice lub szkoły düsseldorfskiej, świadomie lub nieświadomie. Człowiek nie chce oderwania, bo to oznacza konieczność niszczenia.

Marco: Ujmując rzecz dialektycznie, tradycja ma sens tylko wtedy, gdy człowiek ją podejmuje lub gdy zwraca się przeciw niej. Tradycją jest również krytyczne do niej podejście.

Powiedziałeś [do Alwina], że Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ma wymiar pedagogiczny – posiada rodzaj edukacyjnej misji. Czy musieliście przed wystawą konsultować jej założenia, bądź przybliżać organizatorom intencje wasze lub artystów zaproszonych do projektu?

Alwin: Nikt nie ingerował w naszą pracę i nie żądał, by wystawa miała wymiar dydaktyczny. Jeśli chodzi o wcześniejsze wystawy prezentowane w galerii, uważam, że nasza wystawa wpisuje się w profil tego miejsca.

Marco: A wyjaśnienia samych artystów – czy dostępne są teksty o wystawianych pracach?

Alwin: Postanowiliśmy zrezygnować z tekstów w publikacji, jak również na wystawie, ale prace są opatrzone niezbędnymi informacjami. Odbiorcy mogą poznać biografie artystów.

Chcieliśmy jednak mieć pewność, że widzowie będą koncentrować się na samej pracy, nie spoglądając do towarzyszącej jej ulotki.

Alexander: To byłoby również trudne do wykonania. Jestem pewien, że Alwin i ja różnie interpretujemy prace i że sposobów interpretacji jest dużo więcej. W tym jednak tkwi szansa tych prac. One krzyczą na zewnątrz, powodując nie do końca określoną reakcję publiczności.

Początkowo dzieło wysyła jedynie sygnały i myślę, że żaden z artystów nie jest na tym etapie zainteresowany wyjaśnianiem swoich intencji. Co Moritz Frei chce powiedzieć przy

Alwin: But only the questions, not the answers. The title of the work is “Everything would be that clear” (German: Alles wäre so klar) Alexander: Questions, such as: Why so evasive? Wouldn’t you like to demystify your concept? (laughing) Marco: So the point is that you don’t focus on the purposes?

Alexander: That is a decisive point which has to be made clear. I think that art always fulfills a purposeful mission and gives up the last bastion as a form which is directed towards the unknown. Watching the field of photography one can find a behavior similar to global hedge funds. Photographers often think that way: They search for a topic and when they find it they work on it for a month. It gets brutally processed and that’s it. If you have the right connections there will be a book and other things after a short period of time. We focus on a different issue. Maybe it sounds pathetic to say “working into blankness”, but it paraphrases a moment which could touch the philosophy of Deleuze, where you can find another way of thinking including people that accept the fact that it is about a movement and not about setting a point, by having further discussions.

Marco: Process.

Alexander: Yes, the focus is on the process which is a very good thing because in the field of art the process makes total sense. Especially in the field of photography processuality creates huge changes. It is not always about the end product: on the wall, in the frame or directly forever behind Diasec. Yawn.

Marco: I have the impression that you are photographing but the focus is often not on the photography. On the one hand I think that there is a little mixture of different media.

Maybe this could be explained by the technique you use. On the other hand you don’t just concentrate on the camera. Sometimes you keep away the camera and do things in an installative way. Do you think it is because of the technique or the art itself?

Alwin: That is exactly the point how we met for this exhibition or our purpose. Although we belong to different fields, have different ideas and opinions we meet exactly at this interface, away from the apparatus and look for other roles and other surfaces with this apparatus. There is an unbelievable variety of possibilities and depending on how an artist works, he could move from this question into different directions. This starting point was important for us.

Alexander: it can again end with the camera.

Alwin: One can also use the picture in a conservative way and spin in a circle once. But for us, the starting point is the same.

Alexander: Explain us Vesko! He is quite interesting in this context.

Alwin: The interesting point is Vesko Gösel’s focus on sculptures. He is a big supporter of Gottfried Jäger. As a part of the exhibition, he has one sculpture called “Ferd. Homrich and son, Modell II”. It is a drying cabinet made of wood, where you can see analogue films hanging for drying. He modified this drying cabinet to a lying sculpture which seems to be abstract at first and has no function at all. One can see the cooler on one side, there is a door you could open, but that seems to be useless. You can see traces from films leading to that point and if you know the type plate and you are a photographer you will know after a short period of time what was happening before. But for this sculpture it is not necessary at all. He is dealing with a somehow nostalgic material which he destroys, modifies

Alwin: Moritz Frei wystawia również pracę składającą się ośmiu obrazów o wymiarach 30×40 cm, przy czym ramki są puste, ale posiadają passe-partout z nadrukowanymi pytaniami i fragmentami wywiadów…

Alexander: ... z artystami i fotografami…

Alwin: …ale tylko pytaniami – bez odpowiedzi. Tytuł pracy to „Wszystko byłoby tak oczywiste” (Alles wäre tak klar).

Alexander: Pytania w rodzaju: Dlaczego tak wymijająco? Nie chciałbyś przybliżyć swojej koncepcji? (śmiech) Marco: Więc chodzi o to, aby nie koncentrować się na celach?

Alexander: To jest decydujący punkt, który musi być jasno określony. Myślę, że sztuka zawsze podporządkowana jest jakimś celom i oddaje ostatni bastion jako forma skierowana w nieznane. Obserwując świat fotografii, znaleźć można zachowanie podobne do globalnych funduszy hedgingowych. Fotografowie często myślą w ten sposób: szukają tematu, a kiedy uda im się go znaleźć, pracują nad nim przez miesiąc. Poddają go brutalnemu przetworzeniu i to wszystko. Mając odpowiednie kontakty, można liczyć na szybką publikację i inne rzeczy. My skupiamy się na innej kwestii. Być może stwierdzenie, że „podążamy w kierunku pustki” zabrzmi nieco pompatycznie, ale jest to trafna parafraza określająca moment, w którym ocieramy się o filozofię Deleuze’a. Chodzi o inny sposób myślenia, akceptację podejścia przedkładającego ruch ponad punkt docelowy i dającego pole do dalszych dyskusji.

Marco: Proces.

Alexander: Tak, koncentrowanie się na procesie jest bardzo korzystne, w sztuce sprawdza się to znakomicie. Zwłaszcza w fotografii podejście procesualne robi ogromną różnicę. Nie zawsze chodzi o produkt końcowy: wiszący na ścianie, oprawiony w ramki, na zawsze uwięziony w oprawie typu diasec. Nuda.

Marco: Mam wrażenie, że robisz zdjęcia, ale skupiasz się na czymś poza fotografią. Czasami jest to połączenie różnych mediów. Być może da się to wyjaśnić przy pomocy techniki, którą wykorzystujesz. Z drugiej strony nie koncentrujesz się wyłącznie na aparacie.

Czasami odrzucasz aparat i robisz rzeczy o charakterze instalacji. Czy uważasz, że dzieje się tak ze względu na technikę czy sztukę samą w sobie?

Alwin: To jest właśnie punkt, który doprowadził do naszego spotkania i określa cel wystawy. Choć zajmujemy się różnymi dziedzinami i każdy z nas ma własne pomysły oraz opinie, łączy nas właśnie ten aspekt – szukanie innych ról i sposobów patrzenia, z dala od narzędzi lub przy ich pomocy. Istnieje niewiarygodna wielość możliwości i zależnie od tego, jak artysta pracuje, może podążać z tym pytaniem w różnych kierunkach. Ten punkt wyjścia był dla nas ważny.

Alexander: I może znowu doprowadzić nas do aparatu.

Alwin: Można wykorzystywać obraz w konserwatywny sposób i zatoczyć pojedyncze koło. Niemniej, punkt wyjścia dla nas jest taki sam.

Alexander: Wyjaśnij nam fenomen Vesko! Jego przypadek jest bardzo interesujący w tym kontekście.

in order to deal with this nostalgic value, which in his opinion also exists in the field of photography. But in a processual way. He had the cabinet standing in his place for many years and he had to modify it.

Marco: This is also a game with the anachronism because many things present themselves differently due to the changed technique or the digital technique. Many say that now everything will be easier for people or that the quality of pictures will decrease because the processes are different, and so on. As in an old factory which has a strange roof looking like a saw tooth with the function to help the workers at the conveyer beltby spending them enough light. And if you see this roof nowadays from the museum in Cologne, you don’t know about its sense because this process of production does not exist anymore.

Alexander: Exactly and now there is a need of reflection taking place on a completely different level. In order to continue there have to be further thoughts about the idea of photography. All of those who like to speak about flashes, camras amd lenses all the time.

It is comparable to the first “internet people“, not the cracks, but those who found it stark to be able to send something now. That is nothing! It is just a tool. During an event in Italy I started to discuss about the concept of reality with some people of the Canon-Club Italy. This was very exciting because I noticed that there is something happening that most of the people never thought about before because for most of the people the photography is clearly in the here and now, in my past and in my present. I don’t want to claim that the handling of it has to be trained but it should at least be mentioned, maybe by the exhibition. I find it decisive that for many people, photography looks sharp, straight, formal and perfect. We don’t deny that photography can look like that, but we also see a huge potential, still lying on the ground. It is just a tool and I think dealt too much with the tool and its skills during the last 100 years people.

Not? [to Alwin] (laughing).

Alwin: No, it did exist. For example the term of concrete photography [hubbub] Alexander: …So explain us the term of concrete photography!

Alwin: For example Gottfried Jäger, and there are some other photographers, who have an approach similar to the concrete painting and completely alienate from the picture.

They use labaratory results and photo material in a way they only stay the same, which leads to a virtual elimination of the picture. This material will be used as “the work”.

Gray Scale, technical installations which are only known as tools, or from the darkroom.

And even they will be further minimalized. This is an event that takes place again and again since the sixties in individual positions. I don’t think that, up to now, nobody worked photo-reflexive.

Marco: It is the same in other fields of art: Concrete poetry, this orientation towards materiality is…

Alexander: Okay, this orientation towards materiality. But this is not the basic goal of the exhibition.

Alwin: Not at all. But the concrete photography starts at a similar point. The question comes before it.

Alexander: Yes, but there are constantly people that are moving inside their medium in a self-reflexive way. In his movies, Terrence Malick creates interesting meta-levels for a short period of time. But concrete photography is not mine. I don’t like to watch Gray Scale.

Alwin: (laughing) Marco – One could see it firstly as a source of inspiration. These are developments.

Alwin: Intrygujące jest zainteresowanie Vesko Gösela rzeźbą. On jest wielkim zwolennikiem Gottfrieda Jägera. Na wystawie prezentuje jedną rzeźbę o nazwie „Ferd. Homrich i syn, Modell II”. Jest to drewniana szafka, w której wiesza się do suszenia klisze fotograficzne.

Artysta zrekonstruował ją, tworząc leżącą rzeźbę, która początkowo wydaje się abstrakcyjna i pozbawiona jakiejkolwiek funkcjonalności. Z jednej strony widać wentylator, są drzwiczki, które można by otworzyć, ale wydają się bezużyteczne. Widać ślady filmów, prowadzących do tego miejsca i jeśli znasz się na technikach fotograficznych, po krótkiej chwili odgadniesz pierwotną funkcję rzeźby. Nie jest to jednak konieczne. Artystę interesuje nostalgiczna wartość materiału, który niszczy, modyfikuje, aby dotknąć nostalgii występującej również w dziedzinie fotografii. Dzieje się to jednak w ramach swoistego procesu.

Szafka stała w jego pracowni wiele lat i artysta poczuł potrzebę jej zmodyfikowania.

Marco: Jest to również zabawa z anachronizmami, ponieważ wiele rzeczy przedstawia się inaczej w związku z postępem technologii lub techniką cyfrową. Istnieje wiele opinii, że teraz wszystko będzie łatwiejsze lub że jakość zdjęć się pogorszy ze względu na zmianę procesów itp. Jak w starej fabryce z dziwnym dachem w kształcie zębów piły zapewniającym pracownikom przy taśmie produkcyjnej równomierne oświetlenie.

Patrząc dziś na dach muzeum w Kolonii, nie rozumiesz jego sensu, ponieważ ten proces produkcyjny już nie istnieje.

Alexander: Istnieje teraz potrzeba refleksji na zupełnie innym poziomie. Aby można było iść naprzód, muszą pojawić się nowe sposoby pojmowania fotografii. Dotyczy to wszystkich tych, którzy ciągle mówią o lampach błyskowych, aparatach i obiektywach. Jest to porównywalne do pierwszych internautów, dla których niesamowita była możliwość natychmiastowego przesyłania informacji. To nie ma znaczenia! To tylko narzędzie.

Pewnego razu we Włoszech wdałem się w dyskusję na temat pojmowania rzeczywistości z ludźmi z Canon Club Italia. To było bardzo ekscytujące, ponieważ zwróciłem uwagę na coś, czego większość nie zauważa, gdyż większości ludzi rozpatruje fotografię w kategorii „tu i teraz”, w swojej przeszłości i teraźniejszości. Nie chcę twierdzić, że obchodzenie się z rzeczywistością powinno być przedmiotem nauczania, ale powinno przynajmniej być zasygnalizowane, być może w formie wystawy. Uważam, że decydujące jest to, że wielu ludziom fotografia jawi się jako dziedzina oczywista, prosta, formalnie rozwinięta i doskonała. Nie zaprzeczamy, że fotografia może być tak postrzegana, ale widzimy także ogromny potencjał wciąż czekający na zagospodarowanie. To jest tylko narzędzie i uważam, że przez ostatnie 100 lat ludzie poświęcali zbyt wiele uwagi jego możliwościom.

Czyż nie? [do Alwina] (śmiech).

Alwin: Ależ nie, przeciwnie! Na przykład fotografia konkretna.

Alexander: No to wyjaśnij nam pojęcie fotografii konkretnej!

Alwin: Weźmy choćby pracę Gottfrieda Jägera. Podobnie jak kilku innych fotografów stosuje on podejście podobne do malarstwa konkretnego z charakterystycznym całkowitym odejściem od obrazu. Wykorzystują efekty uzyskane w laboratoriach i materiały fotograficzne w sposób prowadzący do praktycznej eliminacji obrazu. Materiał jest wykorzystywany jako „dzieło”. Skala szarości, instalacje techniczne, które znane są z ciemni fotograficznej i zwyczajowo traktowane jako narzędzia – nawet te środki ulegną dalszej minimalizacji.

Jest to trend pojawiający się raz po raz od lat sześćdziesiątych w działaniach różnych artystów. Nie sądzę, by nikt do tej pory nie pracował w ten sposób.

Marco: Tak samo jest w innych dziedzinach sztuki, np. w poezji konkretnej, koncentrującej się na materialności...

I know it only from other media and other art forms. Of course I don’t want to listen to chains of consonants because it is said: Language consists of noises, say no more! The language we listen to consists of it but for me it is a big inspiration to think about it, to see that there was some research about it. That is what I meant with “historic” earlier in this interview. It is interesting to watch how the things we use are working.

Alwin: I just want to stress that it is not a point zero where we started from. Before, there was quite a development and an interest towards the medium. I would say that the question is very old, but especially nowadays it is necessary to think about that medium.

Marco: Funny. I have a déjà-vu now.

Alwin: But if you take a look at this: We have five artists from Leipzig and four of them are taught

by Peter Piller. This is almost a school itself that you are inviting.

Alexander: Quite decisive is to show people who worked on their thing for many years, without searching a connection to an established position. For example Sirmon McRhymann.

Actually we take people out of their processes because that is the only way to present them.

Marco: What you say now, is that the focus lies on the personal development. But being at the exhibition I have all the works and I deal with them. How important is the personality in this context?

Alwin: We tried to find works that speak for themselves and include parts of the question we started from. I think strong works include personality and character.

Marco: In conclusion. Alexander und Alwin – VOM PHOTO is an exhibition in book, film and room including works about the technical picture. An experiment asking questions about reality, imaging systems and exhibition situations. It is separated from any conventions and free from the imagination that photography lies somewhere between essayistic “party snaps” and “topologic large-format freezing”.

Alexander: Jasne, ale zorientowanie na materialność nie jest podstawowym celem wystawy.

Alwin: Oczywiście, że nie, ale fotografia konkretna wychodzi z podobnego stanowiska. Pytanie pojawia się wcześniej.

Alexander: Tak, ale są osoby, które stale poruszają się wewnątrz swojego medium w sposób autorefleksyjny. Terrence Malick tworzy w krótkich fragmentach swoich filmów ciekawe meta-poziomy. Jednak fotografia konkretna nie jest dla mnie – nie lubię oglądać skali szarości.

Alwin: (śmiech) Marco, po pierwsze można ją postrzegać jako źródło inspiracji. To jest rodzaj rozwoju, który znam tylko z innych mediów i innych form sztuki. Oczywiście nie chcę słuchać łańcuchów spółgłosek tylko ze względu na obserwację naukową, że język składa się z dźwięków. Lecz jest ona dla mnie inspiracją do rozważań nad językiem i odkrywania badań, które zostały na ten temat wykonane. To właśnie miałem na myśli, posługując się w tym wywiadzie przymiotnikiem „historyczny”. Obserwacja zasad działania używanych przez nas rzeczy jest ciekawa.

Alwin: Chcę tylko podkreślić, że nie zaczęliśmy od zera. Wcześniej również występował rozwój i zainteresowanie medium, od dawna zadawano podobne pytania, lecz w dzisiejszych czasach rozważania nad medium są szczególnie ważne.

Marco: Zabawne. Odczuwam coś w rodzaju déjà vu.

Alwin: Ale jeśli spojrzeć na to, że mamy pięciu artystów z Lipska, z których czwórka to uczniowie Petera Pillera, można dojść do wniosku, że w praktyce zaprosiliśmy do udziału w wystawie szkołę samą w sobie.

Alexander: Ważne jest, aby pokazać ludzi pracujących przez wiele lat nad wybranymi tematami i nie szukających sposobu na zdobycie ugruntowanej pozycji, jak na przykład Sirmon McRhymann. Faktycznie, wyciągamy ludzi z ich procesów, ponieważ jest to jedyny sposób, aby ich zaprezentować.

Marco: Mówiąc to, kładziesz nacisk na rozwój osobisty. Będąc na wystawie, mam przed sobą wszystkie prace i próbuję się do nich odnieść. Jak ważna jest w tym kontekście osobowość?

Alwin: Staraliśmy się znaleźć prace, które mówią same za siebie, a także przyczyniają się do rozważań nad naszym wyjściowym pytaniem o kondycję fotografii. Myślę, że silne prace mają swoją osobowość i charakter.

Marco: Podsumujmy. VOM PHOTO funkcjonuje za pośrednictwem książki, filmu i przestrzeni wystawienniczej, obejmując prace dotyczące technicznych aspektów obrazu. To eksperyment stawiający pytania o rzeczywistość, systemy obrazowania i sytuacje wystawowe. Wystawa jest daleka od wszelkich konwencji i wolna od przekonania, że istota fotografii leży gdzieś pomiędzy eseistycznymi fotografią lifestylową a wielkoformatowymi, konceptualnymi pracami inspirowanymi szkołą Becherów.
