foreword Health @ Wealth Hi Readers, “The air sucked by the latest SUV models is far dirtier than the air which comes out of it” was the comment of Ralph Speth, CEO, Jaguar Land Rover on the recent Supreme Court ban on Diesel SUVs above 2000CC in Delhi. According to Mr. Speth the vehicles manufactured with EU VI regulations have got technical features which can clean the air in Delhi! Delhi witnessed last month much criticized odd even plan and irrespective of its outcome everyone will agree the need of having proper measures to curb air pollution which is now in alarming level for all living beings! The scenario is not just for Delhi, but applicable to all metro cities in our country. Phasing out of heavy vehicles which is more than 15 years old and replacing them with the environment complied ones is the need of the hour. Considering the economic viability of implementing this by the state government run transport as well as private players is going to be a tough task, but the authorities should take strict actions to ensure creating a healthy environment to the society as well as a measure to control unstable climatic conditions. Asthma, Allergies, Cancer are very common in our society today, and air pollution is one of its major causes. In his article featured in this edition Mr. Surendra Kumar gives some ideas with detailed solutions to control the air pollution levels. The recent Auto expo held at Delhi showcases promising growth in the Indian manufacturing sector and all the major players announced their latest offerings to the consumers. The Prime Minister’s aim to make India a manufacturing destination for global market got some incentives with auto majors announcing their new models manufactured here in India into the global market. The same sentiments of Make In India was also visible at recently concluded IMTEX Forming exhibition at Bangalore as well. The IMTMA officials shared with the media the constructive interactions they are having with government on several issues which will support the manufacturing industry. The same message is getting carry forward further through ELECRAMA 2016 at Bangalore; the exhibition opens from 13th of this month. These flange facers are mainly used in for generating smooth or serrated finish on the flange butting surfaces. Easy to carry, compact in size, light in weight, simple to operate, these flange re-surfacers are affordable and, except for human power, it does not need any source of power like electricity, pneumatic, hydraulic etc. In other words, this product is fire hazard-free and most ideally suited for flange resurfacing operations

While designing the product, conscious efforts were put in to keep its weight about 7 kgs. Extensive use of aluminium in the structurals made it possible to contain the weight of the flange facer. The tool is moved over the LM guides through a leadscrew-box nut arrangement, coupled with a worm reduction gear box for the mechanical advantage. The input of the worm reduction gear box has a knob which can be rotated. The box nut is made of phosphorus bronze which creates less friction against
cutting loads while facing. Inside the hollow spindle, a threaded clamp shaft is provided. The spindle also has 3 slots, where 3 jaws are mounted. When the clamp shaft is rotated, a taper provided on the shaft pushes the jaws out of the slot equally, thereby clamping the facer inside the bore and self-centres the Flange Facers.

Laser calibration at the speed of light - comparatively speaking
High speed data capture technique cuts calibration time 85-95 percent, minimising downtime on key assets
The word “laser” implies “light speed” for the casual listener, but witnessing a bi-directional laser calibration run on just one linear axis of a CNC mill conjures up a completely different image – that of something less than the speed of light. A short 1 m axis can typically take 30 to 60 minutes as the machine axis moves in 10 mm increments and stops to pause and settle before the laser interferometer takes a reading. That pause can be as long as 23 seconds during some tests. The downtime it causes for calibration of a large, high value asset can make a machine shop owner bite through nails. Depending on machine crashes and the quality system the shop adheres to, a machine may be out of action for several days each year to perform a laser calibration, so shop owners are always focused on this issue. However, a technique that takes advantage of a feature in Renishaw’s XL-80 laser interferometer reduces settling time to just 250 milliseconds after each incremental axis move, cutting calibration times

by 85-95 percent. In addition to reducing downtime on critical production assets, this methodology better reflects axis positioning accuracy under actual cutting conditions, where moves are fast and there is virtually no settling time before tool engagement with the work. Quality Tech Services in Byron, Georgia, USA, has used the technique and instructed new laser buyers on it as well. “As a new calibration service, the first concern we hear when we walk in the door is downtime on a machine,” said Mike Schraufnagel, company owner. “Customers will do anything to cut downtime on a critical asset, and our customers who own lasers love this capability. For us, the technique has been a boon to our efficiency. What normally would take 30 minutes now takes just three. In one afternoon we were able to complete six laser set ups and three ballbar set ups on a machine in two hours. This would normally have taken at least a day.” M-Code and an open contact relay is all that is required
To use the high speed calibration technique, a machine’s CNC could use an available M-code which, if not available, is usually a purchasable option to close a “normally open” set of relay contacts for between 10 and 20 milliseconds. Closure of the relay contacts, via an auxiliary I/O cable, will provide a trigger for the laser to record the difference between the laser reading and the target position. M-codes are typically used in CNC for probing cycles, to control coolant and capabilities other than axis positioning moves, so this option is available as standard on many CNC. In others M-Code may be an option that simply needs to be purchased or turned on by the OEM. “We identified spare relays that can be controlled via M-Codes on a Haas CNC machine in our lab. This got us started in thinking of the many ways users could reduce overall machine down time by triggering the laser interferometer via a part program. This type of signalling will more accurately record the
moment the machine achieves its commanded position” said Michael Wilm, Calibration Business Manager, Renishaw Inc. “Because mechanical relay contacts can bounce for the first few milliseconds, we have added a bounce rejection feature programmed into the electronics of the laser. The laser simply needs to see the relay close for as little as a microsecond; any chatter within 20 milliseconds gets ignored, the laser takes a reading, and the axis moves to the next measuring position.” High speed data capture can be used to calibrate positioning stages and other equipment where no CNC is involved. “It may take some customising of the machine control with an auxiliary board to trigger the laser, but these boards are readily available and well known by people in the controls business,” Wilm concluded. Water-based bonded coatings for improved workplace safety

When selecting products for coating elastomer profilesand components, workplace safety plays an increasingly important role since the volatile organic solvents enabling application of the bonded coating may cause considerable air pollution. This is why manufacturers and coating companies are increasing their efforts to find alternative products to replace conventional bonded coatings which contain organic solvents. Klüber Lubrication has now launched water-based bonded coatings which are completely free of organic co-solvents. Klüberflex 100-0 N is one such new product which particularly helps in reducingfriction and
wear of profiled seals used in the automotive industry. Due to its innovative formulation including a modern binder system, the silicone-hybrid bonded coating hardens quicker than conventional products. The curing time of Klüberflex 100-0 N in the coating chamber at 150 °C is only 5 minutes instead of the usual 15 minutes taken by conventional products. In Klüberflex 100-0 N, crosslinking takes place on the extrusion line at an object temperature of 220 °C in under 60 s. In addition, customers benefit from a higher flexibility of the coating, even at temperatures down to minus 40 °C.
Another new addition is the Klübertop TP 22, 27, 31-1310 A-B (series). This series of water-miscible, two- component bonded coatings for “automotive body seals” have been specially developed for reducing friction, wear and noise in automotive body seals in contact with glass. Klübertop series offers a one product concept to customers with several solid lubricant variants available. For instance, this product is used in applications for window channel seals and weather strips. It is also suitable for various other applications like
door and sunroof seals, folding top seals and front and rear window seals. The product also offers quick quality inspection of the coating after application by integrated UV indicator. The F190 UHF read/write head has been a hit on the market for two years now. The device is designed to be the ideal solution to potentially problematic applications where the installation space is limited and for which read distances of 1 m to 2 m are sufficient. Some Innovative Ideas to Remove The Air Pollution from City Roads Pollution has become one of the greatest threats to our lives, taking a toll on the lungs of our children, and in some cases affecting also their kidneys. It can also lead to Asthma and cancer. In many cities around the world, the polluted air combined with the morning fog generates ‘smog’ which is a real poison. Doctors have declared that the lungs of a metropolitan city based person are like a clogged filter, most unlike those of a mountain-based person breathing fresh air.

Various steps are being taken around the world, ranging from USA up to Japan, to deal with this problem. In some of the cities privately owned vehicles are banned from entry into the city-center. The latest of these steps being currently being applied in our own country is the ‘Odd–and-Even’ Number-Plate formula to restrict driving on the roads on alternate days of the week. The pollutants in the city air consist of dust; hydrocarbons – burnt or un-burnt; smoke; and polluting gases. Dust can come from sand deserts, blown in by the wind; or, from the construction sites. The hydrocarbons occur in the air owing to the exhaust from vehicles. This consists

normally of the burnt fuel. Even more polluting can be the un-burnt fuel being emitted in the exhaust of 2-stroke vehicles (scooters); and vehicles having worn-out pistons rings and cylinders. You may notice the smoke coming out prominently on the top of a flyover, where the load on the engine is the maximum. The hydrocarbons from diesel vehicles are found to be much more harmful, as compared to those from petrol-vehicles. Let it be clear right from the concept level that no shortterm ideas are being offered here. All the ideas that follow require long-term planning, and adequate arrangement of funds for their implementation. These would involve
mandatory modifications to vehicles. This is to assure that all the ideas proposed here are technically feasible. The only question could be the financial viability and the will on part of the Government and the vehicle-makers. Filtering Ducts placed on Top of the Commercial Vehicles We all know that all air-conditioned vehicles have a filter in the front, leading the filtered air to the compressor. The same idea is being proposed here, but on top of the bus or the truck (it being a truck with a top). There would be a power-driven fan at the top front end of the vehicle, with a tubular duct laid along the
length of the truck, ending into a filter. In fact, there could be a number of such ducts laid out parallel to one another, each one of these leading to its filter at the end or, alternatively, a single large duct with a rectangular opening in the front. This means that the same vehicle that pollutes the road is made responsible for scavenging the air above it. Such filters would remove all particles of size above 5 microns passing through. Cleansing the Air with a Spray of Water emitted from a traveling open-top tanker Some of us are aware that till a few decades back, it was usual to see a passing tanker sprinkling water on the dusty roads. Many of us know that after it rains, the pollution level goes down. The drops of water bring down not only the particulate matter but also absorb the toxic gases, to some extent. Let us now imagine a slowmoving, open-top water tanker passing along the road. It would be having several tubular structures rectangular in shape, about 2 meters high, placed across the width of the truck. The pipes would have perforations, with water pumped from below trickling down from the top. It would
be like a vertical spray from the top pipe, with holes 10 mm. apart. Filter cloth lengths would be hanging on both sides of the horizontal pipe on the top, getting wet with the spray. In this way, 4 or 5 vertical filters placed 1 meter apart would make the air pass through them as the vehicle moved forward. A large 24-volt fan placed before the first filtercurtain would help to suck inwards the polluted air from the road and to feed it to the first filter-cloth. As the tanker reached the end of its journey, the level of water in it would have gone down; reduced mainly by the amount sprayed that remained in the air; further down by the amount that evaporated. It would then be required to drain out the dirty water, and to replenish the empty space in the tanker with a supply of fresh water. The amount of dirt collected would be indicative of the

Diesel-operated trucks bringing in the supplies should terminate their journey at the periphery of the city. From there the goods should be trans-shipped to the city though the use of CNG-operated mini-trucks; or through electrically operated vehicles. As an off-shoot, it would also expose contraband material, if any, being brought into the city from border towns. This would also help the police to monitor possible terrorist activities.

Battery-Exchange booths could be permitted at various points in the city, where the users could exchange their spent battery for a charged one on payment. The government would be able to make up the loss of revenue by having
saved some money otherwise meant to be spent on health schemes to treat the people affected by pollution. After seeing the results, the scheme could be extended year after year. In database terms, they involve a move from relational databases and Structured Query Language (SQL) to programming models based on MapReduce, which have been popularized by Google and are distributed as open-source software through the Hadoop open code platform.

Tell us about the 12th edition of Elecrama and how its going to be different from last editions? ELECRAMA is now the ideal platform for World Electricity Forum, where all stakeholders of the global electrical sector come together to shape the contours of the future of global electricity landscape. Today the industry stands at such a point where it is leading the race and has achieved global reputation. Every ELECRAMA has to evolve to a different level, this ELECRAMA will be a paradigm shift as we will have top utilities of the world to come and choose relevant topics with regard to what the world is facing in

terms of power generation, transmission and distribution. How much India has been advanced in the usage of renewable energy? India has now taken up a leadership position in promoting renewable energy in the world and is helping set up an International Solar Alliance (ISA), an alliance of 121 solar resource rich countries lying fully or partially between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. This Alliance was jointly launched by the Prime Minister of India and the President of France on 30th November 2015 at Paris,
France on the side-lines of the 21st Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The sector has an investment potential of $250 billion by 2022 with about $120 billion of investments coming in renewable sector along where we are running the world’s largest renewable energy expansion programme. About $100 billion will be invested in generation and transmission sectors with the remaining in the distribution and energy efficiency sectors. What are the major attractions visitors can
expect in this edition of Elecrama? ELECRAMA for the first time features unique experience pavilions displaying, ”Energies of Tomorrow” and “Evolution of 125 years of Electricity”, in collaboration with IEEE, a coffee table book on this subject is also under preparation. Can you brief the Government roles and association during Elecrama 2016? The Government of India has recognized ELECRAMA as an unparalleled forum for its strategic importance and potential. has been highly supportive and proactive in guiding and strengthening ELECRAMA from time to time and now has deployed the complete administration might behind the event in the form of active participation through pavilions and concurrent events. The Ministry of Power has announced a power pavilion in which the major public sector undertakings of the government would showcase their achievements and share their future plans and endeavors. This would give the industry a clearer perspective of Governments road map and help them align their goals, objectives and implementation of plans to the bigger picture. Also in the cards is an edition of the Energy Secretaries Review Planning and Monitoring meeting of the Ministry of Power, where the Energy Secretaries of State Governments and CMDs of State Utilities and Central PSUs are coming together Can you brief about World Utility Summit? World Utility Summit (WUS) is in partnership with IEEE which will see around 50 CXOs from different utilities around the globe exchanging experience and best practices. The WUS offers a unique opportunity for Utility leaders to learn and discuss the future developments in and outside the energy world. What is unique about Network to Networth at Elecrama? This time we are talking to the finance sector with our maiden event Network2Networth where we will have officials from around 100 NBFCs, FIIs, Private bank and venture capitals for interaction with investors and to explore investment opportunities in the electrical manufacturing industry. industry rather I would say the most troubling aspect for our members. So we are creating this platform for our members. MSME which comprises of 70 percent of our membership don’t get the platform for showcasing and meeting these financial companies. We wanted to bridge this gap and make it an annual event under IEEMA. How much of Modi’s ‘Makein-India’ campaign has been actualized in India’s electrical sector? There has been an overall increase in power generation by 8.4 per cent since last year. The government had done well to untangle supply side issues by augmenting coal supply as well as taken efforts to boost transmission & distribution. The Government’s “Make in India” is perhaps one of the most important programmes being pursued by the government of India. The central theme is about transforming India into a manufacturing hub with world class technology. IEEMA being one of the proud partners of the ‘Make in India’ campaign has identified a four point agenda and has been vigorously pursuing with the policy makers, so as to positively impact made in India products with state-of-the-art technology. Moreover the electrical equipment manufacturing technology is witnessing significant modernisation while new technology is also being adopted in the manufacturing processes. Technological advancements, like smart grids and policies on emission reduction will influence the future direction taken by the power sector and electrical equipment industry in various countries.

Due to various reasons, the demand of instruments in USA, Europe and China fell drastically as a result of which, prices also remained stable. At the same time, because of the devaluation of the RMB, the world currencies were affected. However taking all these factors into consideration, we were able to enter many new markets there by maintaining a growth in the business in our company. Your expectations from ELECRAMA 2016 and how this edition is going to be
different from the past? Elecrama Exhibition is a big favourite of all the players in the Electric and Electronic Industry. Earlier this Exhibition was held in Mumbai, but since the last edition it is being held in Bangalore. This gives us a better opportunity to tap the South Indian market. Moreover due to many innovative steps taken by Elecrama we expect more visitors for our products. This is the first edition of ELECRAMA after Prime Minster’s Make In India campaign. How the initiative helped the industry for the last eighteen months? As the Prime Minister’s “Make in India” campaign is only 18 months old, the benefits are yet to be seen.
However many industries are working and establishing start up units to make the Prime Ministers program successful. Perhaps we will be able to see the benefits of the program in the next edition of Elecrama – 2018. Your plans for the next two years? The Renewable Energy will be in the fore front in the coming years. More energy will be generated by Wind & Solar equipments. We will gear up to be able to cater to the demands of this segment. Our core message will be based on the trend for synthetic esters being used by the leading utilities in India. Lastly, we are expecting to see a 230 KV transformer (110 MVA)being tendered soon with synthetic esters.

We expect to see our friends and customers at Elecrama and to listen to what is going on in the industry. We believe at this year’s event we will hear much more about the use of ester-based transformer fluids in the sector.

We think the market conditions have been very positive and conducive to business growth. MIDEL has been making steady progress in the Indian marketplace, and we see strong growth potential in the utility sector. initiative for the “Make in India” campaign is the first step to showcase the companies that have started to manufacture in India. Your plans for the next two years? We will be continuing and expanding our efforts to help the industry understand the issues of fire safety and environmental impact regarding transformer fluids. Safety is a critical factor; particularly regarding transformers placed in enclosed spaces and populated areas. The advantageous properties of MIDEL, such as fire safety and environmental protection (due to biodegradability) will clearly help in addressing these issues.

Please brief the marketing conditions for the last two years and how it was turned it to the benefit of your company? After a long phase of neglect, action is now shifting to the transmission sector. The realization has finally sunk in that in the absence of adequate transmission capabilities, a single-minded focus on power generation can be disastrous. In a recent report on power supply congestion, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, or CERC, highlighted that while power generation capacity has grown 50 per cent in the last five years, transmission lines have

increased by only 30 per cent. The lack of transmission network led to 3 billion units of electricity remaining unsold in 2014-15. The central government plans to offer projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore under tariffbased competitive bidding to private companies. In the new bidding system, anyone quoting the best tariff will bag the project. The states too are expected to pitch in. Five states - Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir - will cumulatively invest Rs 50,000 crore for enhancing power evacuation
facilities in 2015-16. With an objective to provide 24x7 power across the country by 2019, the government has taken several landmark decisions for generation of power, strengthening of transmission and distribution, separation of feeder and metering of power to consumers. This actually helped us strengthening our position. These initiatives aided in clearing the Bottle necks and helped the overall Power industry to grow. Few initiatives that propelled the power industry were: Ministry of Environment and
Forests modified the guidelines for laying of transmission lines enabling all private transmission developers to be treated at par with the public sector developers in respect of compensatory afforestation. Nine Transmission schemes worth Rs.12, 272 crore have been approved to be implemented under Tariff Based competitive bidding. Operationalization of Power System Development Fund (PSDF) of around Rs.7,500 crore for installation of protection systems in the power grid. Reforms like The Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2014 was

An approval to a new scheme moved by the Ministry of Power Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojnaor (UDAY). UDAY provides for the financial turnaround and revival of Power Distribution companies (DISCOMs), and importantly also ensures a sustainable permanent solution to the problem. UDAY is a path breaking reform for realizing the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of affordable and accessible 24x7 Power for All. Make in India campaign intends to boost the domestic manufacturing industry and attract foreign investors to invest into the Indian economy. Our Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi first mentioned the key phrase in his maiden Independence Day address and over a month later launched the MAKE IN INDIA campaign in September 2014 with an intention of reviving manufacturing businesses and emphasizing 25 key sectors in India amidst growing concerns that most entrepreneurs are moving out of the country due to its low rank in ease of doing business ratings. Till now on the FDI front, dollar inflows in the October to June period saw a 37.3 percent growth at USD 25.7 billion. There were also some big ticket investment announcements, like Foxconn’s intent to pump in USD 5 billion into India in the next 5 years. Japan’s Softbank’s announcement to form a JV with Bharti Enterprise, and Foxconnn for USD 20 billion
worth of solar projects and general motor’s plans to rejig manufacturing operations in India at a cost of USD 1 billion. But it seems, apart from FDI, Make in India has not been able to boost much of domestic manufacturing. Your plans for the next two years? The company has participated and submitted tenders worth over Rs 3,000 crores during the current financial year and expects to see a significant portion of those getting converted into the order books. The company is also strengthening its business presence in overseas markets, namely in Africa, Europe, North America and Lat-Am region, resulting in healthy growth in both top line and bottom line. For 2015-16, the Company has over INR 1,150 crores worth of export orders and is targeting to enter newer geographies. We are eyeing 20% revenue target for the current fiscal year

50. Managing flow in supply chain Supply chain management is evolving as one of the key driver to improve competitiveness of the company. With enhanced focus on core-competencies by Companies, many routine and non-critical activities are being offloaded to Suppliers. In a typical automotive company, share of purchase in the selling price of the company can go up to 65-70 percent. To increase profitability, cash cycle has to be reduced. For this, lead time of delivery of product to customer need to be reduced. Ideally, Customer order cycle (the time difference between the point when Customer places the order and the point when he receives the product he has ordered) and manufacturing lead time of the company has to be same and

still better if manufacturing lead time can be lower than customer order cycle. In such situation, the Customer gets the products on time or earlier. The manufacturing lead time of the company consists of time for processing of the order, the lead from for procurement of pre-part or raw material from supplier, time for value addition inside the company and the delivery time to Customer. The difference between manufacturing lead time and customer order cycle is called the lead-time gap. Efforts should be made to reduce this gap. One way to do this is to hold more inventory of part so that customer is served immediately after receipt of order. With this, service level will improve but cost of inventory will go up. Also, products have to be manufactured in anticipation of demand based on a forecast
which may or may not happen. The other option to reduce the lead-time gap is to cut short lead-time in every activity of manufacturing cycle. Please look at figure 1 for a better clarity What is flow? The lead-time can be reduced if there is flow in chain. The flow is obstructed if there are any bottlenecks in the chain. What is flow? In any chain from supplier’s supplier to Customer’s customer, there are three flows that happen namely material flow, information flow and money flow. Managing these flows across supply chain partners including various departments and agencies inside the companies efficiently and effectively will contribute a lot in reducing the lead-time and also eliminates many wastes. In fact, Supply Chain Management(SCM) can be
defined as,’ The process of managing flow of materials, Information and money among supply chain partners efficiently and effectively’. Let us look at these flows in detail and scenario in Indian SMEs and ways to improve to gain competitive edge. Information Flow: The request for quotation, purchase order, monthly schedules, engineering change requests, quality complaints, reports on supplier performance flows from Customer side to Supplier. From supplier side to Customer, it would be presentation of company, offer, confirmation of purchase order, reports on action taken on deviation, despatch details, report on Inventory, invoices etc. If supply chain has to be successful, constant interaction has to happen between

supplier and Customer. In many cases, other partners like distributors, dealers, retailers, logistic service providers are involved in the information network. Further to this, various departments at Supplier and Customers are in the Information loop. Internal information flow within the Customer for in-house manufacture is also to be added to above. Material Flow: It moves typically from Supplier to Customer. It could be through various warehouses among distributors, dealers and retailers. Challenge here is to ensure that material flows quickly without halting as inventory in various points in the chain. Faster it moves, better it is for the company as it reduces cash cycle. For repairs, exchange and at end of life, material can also flow from Customer to Supplier. Finally, finished goods flow from Customer to their Customer through various agencies. 3PL (Third party logistics) in the process may also be there in the picture. Not to forget here, internal flow within the shop floor of Supplier and Customer company.

Money flow: Based on invoice raised by supplier, Customer does verification for correctness. If that is correct and accepted for quality and quantity, money will flow from Customer to Supplier. It can be in the form of cash, cheque, demand draft or through online transfer. Flow is likely to get affected if Supplier is not paid in time for the services or materials received. There could also be flow of money from Supplier to Customer as debit notes for poor services. For an efficient and effective supply chain, it is important that all three flows are managed properly with least efforts. For supply chain manager, it is tough task to decide which Information is important for the right decision and he or she would prefer to have visibility of all flows by click of a button. Chasing for Information e.g. level of Inventory ready for despatch at supplierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end is a non-value added activity. In this context, Purchasers will become some time chasers. Indian context: Let us look at the above flow
in supply chain management in typical Indian especially small and medium size companies where they have more challenges. Lot of companies still use manual purchase orders and sent to suppliers through courier or as scanned copy. Practice of purchase order acknowledgement by Supplier is poor. Getting Visibility in supply chain is very difficult and for this suppliers are phoned repeatedly for Information. Excel sheets are pre-dominantly used for exchange of Information like level of inventories, despatch schedules etc. EDI (Electronic Data Interface) usage especially through internet is to catch up fully though seen in pockets. I have seen Companies doing export are still using on Excel sheets for various status like shipment details etc. The biggest challenge in all these is that systematic analysis of past records of Supplier performance. Also too many mail updates to buyers and suppliers will make the reader less sensitive to criticality. Companies using ERP (Enterprise resource Program), spends lot of time in invoice verification where Data is entered manually in
system from physical invoices. Overall, lot of non-value added activities seen in managing flow in supply chain. There is a huge opportunity to streamline to save time, efficiency and effectiveness. Technology available in the market as an Enabler to improve flow in supply chain can be thought of. For example, there are interface soft wares which will enable on type of ERP to talk to another one for continuous flow of Data. Money flow can be improved by using online transfers instead of cheques. Material flow can be increased by proper planning of schedules, lead time and logistics aspects. Speed in flow in supply chain will keep not only Customer happy but all involved in supply chain. The conscious mind is the part of your mind that is responsible for logic and reasoning. If one asks you about the sum of one plus one it is your conscious mind that is going to be used to make that addition. The conscious mind also controls all the actions that you do on intention while being conscious. For example, when you decide to make voluntary action like moving your hand or leg, it is done by the conscious mind. The subconscious mind is the part of your mind responsible
for your involuntary actions. Your breathing rate and heart beats are controlled by your subconscious mind. The most important thing about the subconscious mind you need to know is that it is always active day and night. The subconscious mind controls your body. The best way to understand the subconscious mind is to look at the example of the person who wants to learn how to drive a car. At the beginning, he wouldn’t be able to hold
a conversation with anyone while driving as he would be focusing on the different moves involved. That is because he is still using his conscious mind to drive. A few weeks later, driving becomes a natural habit that happens automatically without needing to think about it. The person could even start using his cell phone or talking to his friends while driving. This happened because the driving habit has been transferred to his subconscious mind and so the conscious mind becomes free. This allowed him to use it to talk
in his cell phone. The subconscious mind makes up an estimated 92% of the total brain. The conscious mind comprises the remaining 8%. Thus, the conscious mind is tiny compared to the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind can’t differentiate between the real and the imagined. The wonderful thing about using the subconscious mind is that it is effortless. No conscious effort is required to use your subconscious mind. The conscious mind has the will and

Companies this year are talking about Customer Engagement and the concept is causing quite a stir in service-driven companies. But, is Customer Engagement just a new buzzword for Customer Experience or is it taking companies and its leaders to the next level?

To add a different take on the question of what distinguishes the two, Andy Frawley, author of Igniting Customer Connections, provides an almost opposing view. He says customer experience is the emotional connection a customer has with a brand, whereas engagement means “actions that the consumer can take include buying, liking, following, referring, and more”. Perhaps the two concepts are interchangeable, but regardless, they achieve one common ground: they indicate a powerful move toward customercentric strategies in today’s

Gallup defines Customer Engagement as the “emotional connection between your customers and your company”. A 2015 Gallup report reveals that customer engagement is
a strong determinant of profit growth: 1. In the retail banking industry, customers who are fully engaged bring 37% more annual revenue to their primary bank than customers who are actively disengaged. 2. In the insurance industry, fully engaged policy owners purchase 22% more types of insurance products than actively disengaged policy owners. 3. In hospitality, fully engaged hotel guests spend 46% more per year than actively disengaged guests spend. Personalizing customer service as much as possible

On one side we have lakhs of deaths due to diarrhea and acute respiratory infections and on the other side we are becoming world capital of diabetes and hypertension. The disease burden due to non communicable diseases in India has overtaken the burden due to communicable diseases. More than 50% deaths in the country are now due to non communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancers and accidents. It is comparatively easy to tackle the communicable diseases because we have antibiotics, vaccines, measures for

purifying water etc. In contrast to these the non communicable diseases are difficult to control and treat. They cause life threatening complications and require lifelong treatment which is very costly. Just think of a surgery of heart bypass or kidney transplant or brain tumor. It has the potential to push a middle class family to below poverty line family. What is true for the society in general is equally true for people working in industries at various positions. The money spent to keep the employees healthy can save crores of rupees spent on medical reimbursement and compensations under various government acts. Unfortunately this is not properly understood by many managements and workers unions.
In this article I am presenting the readers a simple method to lose weight which has a potential to postpone or prevent diabetes. I am sure many of you must have tried various methods to lose your belly and look smart! I too did many experiments to lose weight before four years. I wanted to lose around 8 Kg of my weight which had accumulated at wrong places on my body. I tried various methods to lose weight. These included fasting for one day in a week; taking vegetable juices, fasting and fruits each in a three day cycle; General Motors diet; eating many small meals in a day and Ayurvedic medicines. The end result of all these experiments was: either weight gain or weight reduction followed by weight gain to previous level! You will agree that the way

The basic principle of this diet plan is that excess level of the hormone ‘insulin’ makes us obese. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by a gland called pancreas in our body. Other type of secretion happens whenever we eat. It is expected that we secrete similar amount of insulin as is our baseline secretion (18 to 32 units). After we eat different food items, the alimentary system digests them and converts it into glucose, amino acids and fatty acids. These end products of digestion enter the blood stream. Insulin makes the glucose to enter cells of the body, which use it for energy. Insulin acts as a key to open the door on the cell, so that glucose can enter the cell. Glucose cannot enter the cell in absence of insulin. The only exception to this is cells of brain that can take glucose without the help of insulin. If still glucose is present in the blood then insulin converts it to glycogen. Glycogen is nothing but a complex substance with many glucose molecules. It can be broken down easily to release glucose which can be used by the body whenever required. Our body has 100 gm of glycogen stored in liver and 500 gm of glycogen stored in muscles. If still glucose is present in the blood then insulin converts it into fats in the liver. This fats is then stored in fat cells in the abdomen, buttocks and

under the skin. Insulin secretion has ‘all or none’ character. You may eat one biscuit or take complete meal, same amount of insulin is secreted! One more peculiarity of insulin secretion is that once it is secreted, the second secretion cannot occur before 60 minutes. When we are not eating, (as happens in the night: we take dinner at 9pm and then till 7 or 8 am don’t eat or drink anything) the insulin level goes down. This reduced level results into firstly use of available glucose from blood for fuel by cells. Once this free glucose is over, then glycogen in liver is broken down to release glucose in the blood to provide about 400 calories of energy. This energy is utilized by body in 3 to 4 hours. Though we are sleeping, our heart, lungs and brain are all working. So after glycogen is exhausted, the liver breaks down fats into fatty acids and uses it for energy. Most cells of the body

In nutshell, insulin acts as a switch, if its level is high body uses glucose for energy and if its level goes down then body used fats for energy. Are you getting the point now? To reduce weight we must reduce insulin secretion in our body. Before I started this diet plan I used to eat or drink at least 8 to 9 times in a day. If every time I was secreting 10 units of insulin, then against the required amount of insulin of 18 to 32 units I was secreting 80 to 90 units! And this insulin was making me obese. This excess insulin is not tolerated by our cells which develop resistance in response to it. This is called as insulin resistance in technical language. Insulin resistance then results into diabetes. Now as you know the reason for obesity and diabetes, it will be easy to understand the simple method to tackle it. Let me tell you the diet plan in a

frittered away again. Ground Reality Number 2: Being a graduate of IIT myself, I am all for creating more IITs and Engineering colleges across the country. This certainly must be done. But what is equally important is that we create a very large pool of labour with a high degree of “hands on” technical skills. When was the last time you or I was totally happy with the electrician or the painter or the plumber or the mason or the carpenter that came to your house to perform a function? I certainly was not very happy. So I would advocate creation of many more ITIs than IITs. In fact I would even go to the extent of saying that there should be an I.T.I in every Taluk in the country to provide subsidized skills training for the young children. The brightest and the best of them will certainly go to IITs
and Engineering colleges, but the 2nd and 3rd Tier children also do deserve a chance to contribute productively to the country. Otherwise we will continue to see them hanging around by the side of the road, loitering around petty shops. The creation of a very large pool of skilled labour will provide a ground swell like fillip to the country’s economy. A bottom up approach to progress is not only much more lasting and sustainable but also provides social justice. Having worked in U.S.A all my life the first thing I learnt there was dignity of labour. This is one aspect of the West that we in India may choose to imbibe. When respected, a human being will be proud of his work and accomplishments like all of us in this room. Being proud of a job well done is more important that what the job is. Ground Reality Number
3: China obviously has industrialized tremendously in a very short span of time. As we all know, almost every consumer product or appliance that we all touch is made in China- starting with dinner plates to smart phones. Of course this has come at a tremendous cost in environmental degradation and societal instability. For us to blindly copy the China model, in my opinion would be a strategic blunder. The history, culture, philosophy and mental makeup of India are significantly different than that of China. We are a functional democracy and not a command-control politicoeconomic system. All the great religious faiths that are Non-Abrahamic started in India. We are not prone to violent revolutions that result in mass killing of our own people, like in China or USSR. We achieved independence not by armed
struggle but entirely through peaceful means. So for us to blindly ape the Chinese model would be a great follyrather we should recognize our strengths and play to our strengths while trying to correct our weaknesses. I am sure that there are plenty of people in India that, working together, can come up with the right strategies that are suitable to who we are and what we are. While reading newspapers, the Editorials and business journals we do see a healthy debate discussing the pros and cons of various approaches to “MAKE IN INDIA” and gradually a consensus will evolve as to how we solve our problems our way and not the American way or the Chinese way. Rather than making it a mere announcement, if all the recommendations given here can be applied to the concerned segments, sure “Make in India” can revolutionize the meaning of Indian manufacturing
Patel and others, despite the phenomenal diversity of India, India was forged into one country offering up huge opportunities for economies of scale. Unfortunately these opportunities remain relatively untapped and China has filled the void and usurped the role of the production hub for the world. The dilemma, simply put, is thus. Massive employment opportunities can be rapidly created only in low skill industries such as textiles and toys. But right now most of these products can be affordably imported from China. As we go up the food chain of skill level, the number of jobs that can be created becomes lesser and lesser. Also our Federal and States political structure plus the Parliamentary Democracy takes away quite a bit from the gains to be realized from a unified economy. Movement of goods across state boundaries is quite cumbersome. How I wish our founding fathers studied at

Harvard and Yale in USA, rather than Oxford and Cambridge in UK! What I have tried to do above is to outline some strategic considerations for our polity to consider. Of course there are detailed recommendations that can be made. However a short list may be in order: 1) A Tax regime that is predictable in the long term. Business investments, whether domestic or foreign are made looking at a time horizon of more than seven to ten years. The taxing authorities in India need to be cognizant of this- irrespective of the political party in power. Also retro-active taxation is unpardonable- it is like turning a Test Match in Cricket into a One day game on the third day. Consistency and predictability in taxation are crucial for business investments. 2) Of course, as is widely recognized, the infrastructure needs to be improved, labour laws need to be more rational, the role of Government in
Industry reduced, private enterprise encouraged, bills like G.S.T need to be discussed and passed without parochial considerations, rivers need to be cleaned up, bureaucracy needs to be simplified and corruption brought under control. We all know what needs to be done; the trick is how we get it done and how fast we should target to get it done. India is an elephant- not a Cheetah. It is in our nature to move slowly and deliberately, keeping national unity and social justice in mind. These values need to be preserved as we pursue prosperity and GDP growth rate. Fortunately we do seem to have a political dispensation at the Centre that wants to do this. Hopefully they will have the political savvy and support from a “Responsible Opposition” to accomplish it. 3) Self sufficiency in key sectors of the economy such as defence, electronics etc. This is important for national security.
4) Focus on the construction industry for job creation. 5) Seriously examine the idea of increasing the tariffs on imports from China for certain category of products; for say 10 years? This will provide the necessary breathing room for domestic industry in the lowskill space to catch up. 6) Remove all duties and excise taxes on import of capital equipment, again for just 10 years. This will catalyze the establishment of new factories and create the required jobs. 7) Focus on job creation as the center piece/starting point for designing national strategy- at least for the short term. Rather than making it a mere announcement, if all these recommendations can be applied to the concerned segments, sure “Make in India” can revolutionize the meaning of Indian manufacturing.

HARTING Technology Group embarks on new business year from a strong position The HARTING Technology Group, headquartered in Espelkamp has entered the new 2015/16 business year from a strong position (commencing on 1, October, 2015). Sales in the 2014/15 business year elapsed were up by 3.7 % to EUR 567 million (previous year: EUR 547 million), thereby marking the highest sales in the history of the company.

the most complex materials at Airbus Defence and Space. “The interaction of stability and weight is crucial here”, says Wolfgang Simon. Every additional kilo costs a lot of money at the launch. So it is understandable that every gram counts for the complex components. The production manager gives an example: “If we are at the upper limit within the tolerance range and not at the lower, this might already be too much.” Naturally he is speaking of hundredths, not tenths of millimetres. The high demands placed on precision and complexity are only one part of the challenge in manufacturing, as Wolfgang Simon explains: “Competition is extremely high, which means that we must produce as cost-effectively as possible and
above all adhere to deadlines.” What is ideal is a balanced ratio between quality, costs and adherence to schedules. Airbus Defence and Space ensures the specialist know-how required for this with consistent training and induction of junior employees. On production technology side, the company regularly invests in state-of the art machine tool technology, most recently in three machining centres from DMG MORI: two DMU 70 eVo linear machines and one DMC 125 FD duoBLOCK®. Furthermore, the DMG MORI Virtual Machine was acquired for all three, to further optimize manufacturing processes and quality. With this software, DMG MORI enables exact simulation of machining on the PC, in an exact 1:1 image
of the real machines. “The high quality standard in production requires machine tools that consistently work precisely”, says Wolfgang Simon when explaining the decision for DMG MORI. Versatility is another factor: “The 5-axis simultaneous machining and millingturning technology enables applications that could otherwise never be resolved economically.” In order to gain additional process reliability and optimize production, Airbus Defence and Space relies on an extensive simulation of the NC programs for complex manufacturing tasks. “After all, we need to guarantee collision-free production of the expensive
components”, says Wolfgang Simon and adds: “When an NC program is installed on the machine, it has to work.” A suitable simulation software was found with the DMG MORI Virtual Machine, as it already produces a very realistic simulation of the programs on the PC in the preliminary stage. Gerhard Engelhardt, who is responsible for NC programming, sees enormous benefits in this virtual solution: “We can exactly simulate machining of the expensive components completely safely on the PC, and check the program for general machining feasibility or possible collisions.” Gerhard Engelhardt also uses simulation of the CAM software, but: “We still simulate the final NC code on the DMG MORI Virtual Machine to achieve optimum process reliability.” A measuring probe is also integrated in simulation, which performs real-time measurements like on the real machines. The measured results are also acknowledged in the virtual machine. “Accuracy here is sufficiently high, so that we
can already see on the PC whether machining meets our expectations”, says Gerhard Engelhardt. Another feature of the DMG MORI Virtual Machine is shop floor programming. As the actual Siemens control software forms the basis, users can also take full advantage of the ShopMill functionality. This also enables further optimization of the programs based on the simulation, increasing the quality of the finished parts in turn. The process reliability is an important aspect for Wolfgang Simon, also from the operators’ perspective: “For particularly sophisticated components, you can first of all familiarize yourself with the machining on the virtual machine before working on the valuable workpiece.”
New skilled personnel can also be trained in this virtual environment. “Production is much more relaxed for each operator when he can rely on the process already having been tested.” In addition to process reliability and enhanced quality, Wolfgang Simon as head of mechanical production also regards the complete production processes as advantage of the DMG MORI Virtual Machine: “We can organize and accelerate our processes completely differently.” On the one hand, we already know exact machining times in the preliminary stage, on the other, verification of the programs on the PC is much faster than on the machine. “Furthermore, the lengthy running in of programs can largely be
omitted, and setup times are minimized.” Consequently, significantly higher machine running times can be realized and productivity can be markedly increased. Continuous modernization of production with innovative solutions like the DMG MORI Virtual Machine has a high priority for Airbus Defence and Space. Wolfgang Simon expects the complexity of products and their quality requirements to increase further. The cost pressure is also expected to grow independent of this. So the production manager sees this very clearly: “We can only stay competitive if we not only develop the products that we manufacture further, but also ourselves and our production. A crucial step in this direction is the use of the DMG MORI Virtual Machine.”

Renishaw – cranking down cycle time for Hope Technology In 2013, Renishaw produced the world’s first 3D printed metal bicycle frame for UK company, Empire Cycles. The pedal cranks and other components used to create the fully built bike were produced using more conventional machining processes, at Barnoldswick based Hope Technology. In its high-tech, high-volume production factory, the company employs Renishaw’s non-contact tool setting and breakage detection technology, CMM contact scanning probes and modular fixturing to maximise machine up-time and to ensure consistent component precision.

The production of the world’s first 3D printed metal bike frame at the end of 2013 was unquestionably a landmark for the cycle industry which has always embraced the latest technology and innovations in its quest for greater speed, lightness and strength. However, additive manufacturing processes do not necessarily lend themselves well to the creation of all bike components.
At least, not yet. A number of the drivetrain components mounted on the Empire Cycles frame were produced using conventional, prismatic machining techniques. The pedal cranks, for example, were made by world-renowned Hope Technology Ltd. The Lancashire-based company was founded by cycling enthusiasts and time-served tool makers 25 years ago. Its
24-7 factory has around 55 of the latest CNC machine tools, employs around 100 people and exports 50% of its production to 40 countries. Mr. Lindley Pate, Hope Technology’s works and production manager, was the first employee at the company. As an ex-Rolls-Royce machinist, it’s no surprise he brought with him some very high standards,
not least when it comes to controlling precision and quality. “We’ve always believed in making everything in-house, right here in the UK,” he says. “In the very early days we sent a few parts out, but only because of investment requirements. As soon as we could bring it inhouse, we did so.” Since those early days of

in-house metal cutting, Hope Technology’s CNC machines have been equipped with Renishaw NC4 non-contact tool setting and breakage detection systems. Recently, the company has also invested in a new co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM), equipped with a Renishaw PH10 articulating head, SP25 contact scanning probe and Renishaw modular fixturing. “We bought the new CMM with the Renishaw probe to improve our inspection function and also to give us the ability to reverse engineer,” says Mr Pate. “It gives us the option to benchmark our competitors and helps with compatibility, which is a big issue with bicycles.” The Renishaw tool breakage detection systems and the contact scanning probe were both used during the production of the pedal cranks for the Empire Cycles project. Although the model of cranks used is a relatively new product, they are a standard design rather than custom made, which means they are produced and shipped in quantities totalling tens of thousands per year. As well as pedal cranks, Hope

is famous for innovative, lightweight anodised wheel hubs, brakes, headsets, stems, chain rings and bottom brackets. Each different component is machined in high volumes to serve a growing, global customer base, and are finished in a wide variety of eye-catching colours. The factory has a prodigious output: 70,000 wheel hubs a year, for example. Needless to say, productivity and machine up-time are extremely important. Minutes shaved off a cycle time can add up to savings of thousands of pounds a year. Dominating Hope Technology’s factory floor is a line of highspecification, Japanese-built Matsuura horizontal machining centres. “The Renishaw NC4 system is deployed on all of our Matsuura machines,” states Mr Pate. “They run 24-7 unmanned. If a tool breakage alarm sounds, the machine stops to prevent producing parts using a damaged cutter. As a result, the Renishaw NC4 system serves many purposes: it ensures product integrity, eliminates costly scrap, and also the possibility of a broken spindle, which would be hugely expensive to replace in such high-end machines. We
do everything we can to avoid downtime. The consequences could be severe. After all, to keep inventory costs down, we only hold an hour’s worth of stock at any one time!” The NC4 is a flexible laser-based system with ultra-compact laser tool setting transmitter and receiver units that can be mounted on separate brackets, or as a single fixed unit. Dependent on the system, separation distances and mounting, tools as small as 0.03 mm diameter can be measured at any selected point along the beam. The company’s latest Matsuura, an H.Plus-300 3-axis horizontal, has two 15-station pallets, with each pallet fixture featuring a tombstone-style configuration with four parts mounted on four faces - thus 16 components per fixture. Hope Technology uses its pallet pool to fixture different sets of parts on different pallets, all waiting their turn on the machine, including cranks. The cranks are forged in Italy then transported to Barnoldswick, where they are machined in two set-ups (one for each side) before
the spline is added. The company produces a range of different cranks to suit frame length and axle requirements. The Hope factory also houses a line of five other Matsuura machines: MAM72 models with smaller, twin pallets, each of which also employs a Renishaw NC4 system. A single Hope Technology operative oversees all five machines, which also run 24-7. “It’s a high-volume production environment, which means it is critical that we maintain production flows,” reiterates Mr Pate. “Renishaw technology is vital to the process and also to part inspection. We take components off the line on a regular basis for sample measurement on the CMM, using the Renishaw PH10/ SP25 head and probe. We also check the first-off from each run, to make sure nothing has changed since we last made the part. If we know the part is good, that’s great. If the CMM shows up errors we change the program or the tools, press cycle-start and walk away. Integrated solutions based on Industry 4.0 are at the heart of SICK’s presentation at the Hannover MesseIndustrie 2016 trade fair, with typical production applications presented in four different exhibits. SICK demonstrates how the intelligent use of sensor data is already boosting flexibility and productivity today. The data is also aggregated in a cloud in a live demonstration, while various web services show the possibilities of fully integrated solutions online. The intelligent linking of application knowledge with the flexibility of state-of-theart software architectures enables the next development stage for sensors. This is characterized by the possibility of sensors that can perform more extensive analysis, automatically adapt to changes, communicate in the network and remotely solve complex tasks within a larger manufacturing network.

THE LAST LEAF Dear Readers, The new year has begun with a good monsoon in 2016 after two back-to-back droughts, indicating that we should achieve 7.3% growth in 2016. Almost all of that will come from the consumer sector supported by a rural recovery, a big public sector pay hike, and lower interest rates. Prime Minister Modi spelt out his elaborate vision for a gung-ho India at the recent The Economic Times Global Business Summit. Listing out the many successes of his government, he said he will continue to strive and give more opportunities to all Indians. His motto, he said, is to transform the life of every Indian through reforms. While promising to improve governance and rationalise subsidies, the Prime Minister said a big achievement of his government was to end high-level corruption. For the last four quarters, India has been the fastest growing large economy in the world. In 2014-15, India contributed 7.4% of global GDP in purchasing power terms. But it contributed 12.5% of global growth. Thus, its contribution to growth is 68% higher than its share of the global economy. FDI in India has increased by 39% in the last 18 months, at a time when global FDI has fallen. He also highlighted the fact that India had taken the lead in launching an international solar alliance, involving 121 countries falling between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. This initiative will help many developing countries, from Africa to South America, to take advantage of developments in renewable energy around the world. Huawei, Chinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest telecom devices company, has set its eyes on India. Companies such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are already banking on the Indian market for the next phase of growth, as the country looks set to overtake the US and emerge as the second-biggest smartphone market. The Union Budget last year had given an excise benefit of nearly 12% to those making locally and this has prompted companies to make in India, in line with the Modi governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pitch to boost local manufacturing. Meanwhile, France will help modernise Ambala and Ludhiana railway stations and its top company Alstom will manufacture 800 electric locomotives of horse power double than the existing ones in India, involving foreign investment of Rs 1300 crore, according to agreements signed last month. The plant will be set up in partnership with Indian Railways, at Madhepura in Bihar. One of the thought that emerged at the recently held World Economic Forum in Davos, was that the rapid emergence of new technologies like 3D Printing, smart robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI), would alter the face of manufacturing and Indiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attempts to do another China will have to take this emerging challenge of the Fourth Industrial Revolution into account.
