Milind Kelkar & Mohini Kelkar, from Aurangabad based Grind Master bagged this year’s IMTMA-Premier Outstanding Entrepreneur Award in memory of Vinod Doshi. We are sure more accolades in national as well as international arenas are waiting for the Entrepreneur couple for their ongoing inspirational professional journey. MART spoke to several visitors as well as exhibitors, and the feedback was very encouraging this time. With an increase in serious business visitors compared to last couple of editions, most of the exhibitors shared their promising experiences. Keeping the focus on emerging engineer’s, student centric programmes such as i2 Academia Pavilion and Connect, evoked good response. Some of the students complained about old setlines of education followed by most of the engineering colleges, the lack of real world experience made them alien in front of new age CNC Machines compared to the old age lathe from their practical labs. It is high time for all stake holders in the academia to become responsible towards the future of our country, ensuring evolving lakhs of engineers every year are ready for future manufacturing. Mr. Harish Pant, Managing Director of Hampson Aerospace is a known face in the industry not just for his professional achievements, but also for the contributions towards handholding the budding engineers, collaborations with policy makers, industry bodies towards a Smart Manufacturing India. On an exclusive talk with Team MART, he spoke about his Vision 2020, and we are publishing excerpts from our discussion in our Let’s Talk. Visionary Budget, Vibrant Manufacturing! The clarion of ‘Make in India’ laid the foundation for growth in Manufacturing. The sector has witnessed increased inflow of FDI since then; the sector is expecting more conducive tax structure and ‘Ease of Doing Business’ with the roll out of GST soon. Meanwhile, as a catalyst, the Union Budget 2017 has features in store for the manufacturing sector to provide it right impetus for continuous growth.

At the recent Vibrant Gujarat Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s rise to be the sixth-largest manufacturing nation in the world, as opposed to being the ninth largest at the time when ‘Make in India’ programme was launched, back in 2014. The government has set an ambitious target of increasing the manufacturing output from 16 per cent to 25 per cent of the GDP by 2025, which means a promising future for the manufacturing sector in India. Gross domestic product (GDP) from manufacturing in India decreased to Rs 4,84,150 crore in the third quarter of 201617 from Rs 4,901,64 crore in the second

quarter. GDP from manufacturing in India averaged Rs 4,13,621 crore from 2011 until 2016, reaching an all-time high of Rs 4,90,833 crore in the first quarter of 201617. This happened due to an enormous push by the government to open up the economy. FDI in Manufacturing FDI in manufacturing has increased from US$ 1.65 billion in 2014 to US$ 18.36 billion in 2016. And the sector has received FDI equity inflow worth US$ 16.13 billion during April-November period of the current fiscal registering 82 per cent growth in FDI inflow as compared to the corresponding period last fiscal when it attracted FDI worth US$ 8.85 billion.

Initiatives have been undertaken to alleviate the business environment from outdated policies and regulations, and to align with parameters of World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ index. To promote foreign direct investment, government has put in place an investor-friendly policy, wherein except for a small negative list, most sectors are open for 100 per cent FDI under the automatic route. “Further, the policy on FDI is reviewed on an ongoing basis, to ensure that India remains attractive and investor friendly destination,” Commerce and Industry Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman said in recently in the Rajya Sabha. The foreign direct investment (FDI) limit has

The Union Budget 2017-18 provides some much-needed impetus to Manufacturing and Make in India initiatives. Particularly, our startups & small scale industries will benefit much from new announcements like profit exemption for startups for 3 out of 7 years, the abolishment of FIPB and lower taxation rate for companies with turnover less than 50 cr. Interestingly, there is a welcome increase in the investment for infrastructure under Make in India programme. All of this will also be supported by measures to increase the capability & skills of over 35 million youths through skill development & vocational training schemes – Sankalp and Strive. I’m very hopeful that these measures along with the recent demonetization drive will provide an impetus to progress and help accomplish goals for manufacturing contribution to our GDP sooner.

GST Another proposed reform, in line with ‘Make in India’, is the implementation of Goods & Service Tax (GST). The introduction of GST is much anticipated, as it is expected to ease the task of estimating and filing taxes for businesses. GST will transform India into a single market that will bring in significant competitiveness among manufacturers and traders. The challenges of having multiple warehouses,

state registrations etc. will be done away with, facilitating operational uniformity and optimisation. Also since there will be one single tax subsuming myriads of taxes in practice currently, the predictability and ease of doing business will increase. Undoubtedly, this reform has the potential to attract foreign investments further which is essential to realise the dream of ‘Make in India’. Budget Effect on Manufacturing The Union Budget for 2017-18 was tabled in Parliament on 1 February. After demonetization and its consequent impact

on GDP, manufacturing sector has been hoping to generate greater demand through the Budget proposals. In the past couple of years, the Government seems to be focusing on building a long term growth plan for the manufacturing sector by investing resources in infrastructure and rural market development. The finance budget 2017 provides for substantial allocation towards these areas. Several measures have been announced in the Budget 2017-18 to provide impetus to commerce and industry. The key initiatives include: 1. The long standing demand of startups has been accepted and the profit (linked deduction) exemption available to them for

Though the Budget will not directly aid for the manufacturing, but the benefits and considerations done for MSME ‘s and Small scale sectors, textile, Agriculture, both highly labour -intensive will benefit and also support the Make In India program. Special scheme for creating employment in leather and footwear industry, startups exemption on the profits, FDI liberalisation policy should help the Make In India and Manufacturing mission a step nearer. Manufacturing industry, particularly Infra has been one of the key priorities, in my opinion this needs special attention for at least an decade. GST- always I mention as one pill to cure many diseases will create an even level playing field for manufacturers, also many hassles such as various forms, time delay, transport time, paperwork, multi tax layer, Evasion, inventory, input tax credit, etc. will be addressed and certainly boost the revenues for Government and for manufacturers will benefit from the cascading tax, high logistics and fragmented markets and increased protection from imports as GST provides for appropriate countervailing duty.

For the purpose of carry forward of losses in respect of start-ups, the condition of continuous holding of 51per cent of voting rights has been relaxed subject to the condition that the holding of the original promoter/promoters continues.

We believe that the government has focused on creating an inclusive budget for a transparently governed country. It’s refreshing to see the government calling out digital economy as one of the major areas of focus as this will bring in a more transparent administration, enhancing finances for everyone. The move to incentivize merchants with rebates will accelerate the adoption of mobile and digital payment systems in India thus increasing the scope of financial services to the underbanked. I personally believe that this budget holds a lot of promise for skilling the youth in the country. This is something that various industry bodies including the CII, have always advocated. The fulfilment of the Bharat Net scheme along with schemes tailored for the MSME sector will help contribute to a viable and healthy start-up ecosystem. The provision to support NABARD in digitizing 63,000 primary agrooperatives is a healthy move in order to penetrate rural sectors to achieve its goal of a Digital India. Considering the power deficit situation in the country, the proposal to feed 7000 railway stations with solar energy will help in reducing dependence on conventional energy sources. The almost 1/3rd increase in resource allocation towards Integrated Power Development Scheme and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram JyotiYojna (from INR. 7874cr to INR. 10635cr) is also a step in the positive direction

2. Further liberalisation of FDI policy is under consideration and the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to be abolished in 2017-18. 3. In order to make MSME companies more viable, income tax for companies with annual turnover up to Rs. 50 crore is reduced to 25 per cent. About 96 per cent of companies will get this benefit of lower taxation. This will make our MSME sector more competitive as compared to large companies. 4. MAT credit is allowed to be carried forward up to a period of 15 years instead of 10 years at present. 5. For creating an eco-system to make India a global hub for electronics manufacturing a provision of Rs. 745 crores in 2017-18 in incentive schemes like M-SIPS and EDF. The incentives and allocation has been exponentially increased following the increase in number of investment proposals. 6. Inverted duty has been rectified in several products in the chemicals & petrochemicals, textiles, metals, renewable energy sectors. Duty changes to improve domestic manufacturing of medical devices, those used for digital transactions and capital goods have also been announced. 7. Infrastructure – a key pillar under the ‘Make in India’ programme has been strengthened with a large budgetary allocation. The total allocation for infrastructure development in 2017-18 stands at Rs. 3,96,135 crores. A specific programme for development of multi-modal logistics parks, together with multi modal transport facilities, to be drawn up and implemented. 8. Modernisation and upgradation of identified corridor, railway lines of 3,500 kms will be commissioned, 25 stations are expected to be awarded for station

redevelopment and 500 stations will be made differently abled friendly by providing lifts and escalators during 2017-18. These provide large opportunities under the Make in India initiative 9. Initiatives in Skill Development provide essential support for the ‘Make in India’ sectors to thrive. Launch of ‘SANKALP’ scheme to provide market relevant training to 3.5 crore youth and ‘STRIVE’ scheme to improve the quality and market relevance of vocational training. 10. A new and restructured Central scheme with a focus on export infrastructure, namely, Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme (TIES) will be launched in 2017-18. Misses in the Budget R&D Expenditure Research is the centre of any business around the globe. To empower individual thinking and advancement in innovation the Budget should have extended weighted deduction incentive by another 5 years to develop sectors like defence manufacturing, medical devices manufacturing, automobiles, etc. Tax Reforms Last Budget, Finance Minister made a declaration to decrease the corporate tax rate from 30 per cent to 25 per cent throughout the next four years to enhance India’s global competitiveness. To balance the rate reduction, the administration has as of late set out a road map to eliminate a few tax exemptions and deductions from April 1, 2017. Government should have set out clear implementation guidelines as big projects should be reviewed independently. Safe Harbor Guidelines Central Board of Direct Taxes told safe harbor rules covering areas like auto component manufacturer, IT/ITES and KPO prescribing margins to maintain a strategic distance from a suit. Safe harbor guidelines should have been stretched out for companies manufacturing and exporting products as contract manufacturers for better certainty. CENVAT Credit

With India being the fifth largest energy consumer in the world, the country needs to make a concerted effort in promoting energy efficiency by reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and curtailing carbon footprints.While access to energy is a basic human right, we need to make it sustainable. Today’s budget gave a clear indication of the government’s focus to achieve ‘sustainable energy for all’, with two of its critical steps; firstly, by providing a boost to rural electrification with a 25% increase in the outlay for key power schemes like Integrated Power Development Scheme and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna. This is expected to fast track the rural electrification drive of the Government, which is now planned to be completed by May 1, 2018. Secondly by strengthening its focus on renewable energy forms with the inflow of another 20 GW in the next fiscal. This however, will require investments in grid management and digitisation of the grid to ensure supply of quality reliable and safe power. It is important to stress that along with rural electrification, it is equally important to provide reliable and quality power which requires investments towards modernisation of the country’s transmission and distribution power networks and use of digitisation in grid management.

One of the real difficulties confronted by the manufacturing part directly is an accumulation of CENVAT credit because of inverted duty structure. Accumulation of CENVAT credit keeps on influencing the business, making them uncompetitive and in addition influencing financial viability. The legislature should have lowered the duty on different contributions to redress this issue. Points to Ponder If we need to make India a manufacturing hub we need to compete with China aggressively by creating access to capital at much lower interest rates for export oriented units and facilitating export duty-drawbacks

in an easy and simple manner. Though China continues to dominate the world in manufacturing, its proposition is no longer compelling to companies that are looking to expand their footprint overseas. The government should continue with its anti-dumping duties on import of certain finished capital goods from China, to protect the interest of domestic players from cheap in-bound shipments. India, in fact, has initiated the maximum anti-dumping cases against below-cost imports from China. One top of that Rising labour cost and transition from investment-led growth

to consumption-led growth in China is presenting another opportunity for India. The focus should now be on design-led manufacturing rather than assembly-led manufacturing in India. Overall, the initiatives indicate that any future moves by the government, including the Budget, shall consider a nurturing environment for startups in India to flourish. With proper policies in place, the country’ is expected to rank amongst the world’s top three growth economies and amongst the top three manufacturing destinations by 2020.

We welcome the government’s budget allocation of Rs 39,61,354 crore on infrastructure development and of selected airports in tier 2 & 3 cities has come out as a favorable budget, especially for logistics sector. Will the Government’s Vision be Implemented?

Established in 1983 as a consultancy firm, Rhino Machines evolved as a full-fledged manufacturer of conventional green sand, pouring and centrifugal casting products in 1991. The company later collaborated with a French organization, Fondac to bring advanced technologies to the market. As MART has a conversation with Mr. Manish Kothari, Managing Director, Rhino Machines Pvt Ltd, he puts forth his views on the recently announced budget by the Government of India. How Union Budget 2017 will support manufacturing in India? The recent policies of the government, which are continued in the Budget are very much focused on the growth of Manufacturing Sector. The key for the manufacturing sector is to have growth in infrastructure investment from government and push on localization, which is very much evident from the investment growth in Railways, thrust on Defence Made in India, Skill Development, Digitization of Government operations, and increase in transparency. The challenge however will lie in the readiness of the middle level bureaucrats allowing the government in implementing the vision at the top. The faster the middle changes and understands it is for the good for all, the better and faster will be the

implementation. The seeds are sown for growth of manufacturing in India but will the “middlemen” allow it to happen, is the key question. Somewhere we were looking at appreciating and supporting the existing MSME’s who have gone through all the roughs, ups & downs and are looking to grow further. Which are the major points in this Budget that focuses on Manufacturing Industry? The major point is the recognition of manufacturing sector as the engine of growth. For our country to grow sustainably, a shift from the earlier dependence on service industry is the engine of growth. The thrust on Make in India & Made in India, provisions in the budget to support the same, the thrust in agricultural economy and the support for MSME’s (the 2nd largest GDP contributor after agriculture) are the key

takeaways of the consistent policies of the government. What major changes can be seen after the implementation of GST this year? The ease of doing business definitely should improve with lesser documents, lesser offices and lesser officers. However, for a certain period till the previous year assessments are not completed, the industries will face a challenge of double books and double work. The GST will also do away with lot of unscrupulous businesses, multiple company formations, adjustments and create a healthy business environment for those who wish to do clean and clear business. Once again there will be a big tussle on removing corrupt officials and finding a way to deal with them. They will be the biggest disablers in an enabled environment in the Industry. February 2017

With the announcement of Budget 2017, infrastructure, transport, labour and defence have received special attention that supports the manufacturing industry. How Union Budget 2017 will support Manufacturing in India? India’s ambitious Make in India programme got a boost with the budget unveiling fresh steps to correct anomalies in the indirect taxes structure to encourage manufacturing in the country. Sectors including information technology hardware, capital goods, defence production, textiles, mineral fuels and mineral oils, chemicals and petrochemicals, paper, paperboard and newsprint, maintenance repair and overhauling (MRO) of aircraft and ship repair will see changes in their customs duties. This will bring down manufacturing and compliance costs, boosting global competitiveness. In many of these cases, inputs attract higher duties than finished goods, making imports more attractive than local manufacture. Customs and excise duty structure plays an important role in incentivising domestic value addition towards Make in India campaign. The changes in indirect taxes will go on to improving competitiveness. Which are the major points in this budget, focusing on the Manufacturing industry? Infrastructure For the infrastructure, 3.96 trillion rupees

has been allocated for the year 2017-18. Following that is 2.41 trillion rupees for transport sector and 640 billion rupees for investing in national and state highways. Transport To invest 1.31 trillion rupees in railways in 2017/18; budget allocates 550 billion rupees, Dedicated railway safety fund of 1 trillion rupees over next five years, 3,500 kms of railway lines to be commissioned in 2017/18 versus 2,800 km in 2016/17, Airports Authority of India to monetize land around certain Tier 2 airports, to fund airport upgrades Labour Legislative reforms to be undertaken to simplify, rationalise existing labour laws Manufacturing And Trade Government taking steps to make India a global hub for electronics manufacturing, India received more than 250,000 proposals last year with an investment value of 1.26 trillion rupees, Announces new trade infrastructure export scheme. Defence 2017/18 defence expenditure excluding pensions estimated at 2.74 trillion rupees,

Defence capital outlay at 864.88 billion rupees. Plan outlay in all these sectors will help to boost manufacturing in India. What major changes can be seen after the implementation of GST this year? Sticking to its commitment to roll out the goods and services tax (GST) on time, the government will begin its outreach to trade and industry on April 1 to make stakeholders aware of the benefits of the indirect tax reform. The GST Council has finalised its recommendations on almost all issues based on a consensus approach. GST’s tech backbone is also getting ready as per schedule. Indirect taxes in India have driven businesses to restructure and model their supply chain and systems owing to multiplicity of taxes and costs involved. With hopes that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will see the light of the day, the way India does business will change, forever. The tax revenue mix can change as per the economic condition of the country. In developing countries, indirect taxes comprise a higher share of total taxes; in developed countries, their contribution is significantly lower. February 2017

THOUGHTFUL, is one word which can be used to describe budget 2017. Aftermath of demonetization and subsequent cash crunch in the system lead to slow down in the economy, manufacturing sector also slowed down, quarterly result of companies were affected (with few exceptions). Finance Minister has tried to curb demonetization effect in this budget.

Government has been supporting manufacturing sector via various schemes and tax concessions, Budgets allocated by finance minister to PKVY, Skill India, Apprentice program and other various schemes testify importance of manufacturing sector. Another major decision which common man cheered about was zero income tax for income up-to Rs 3 lac and tax rate for lowest income slab reduced to 5%, a prudent move. This move will increase disposable income, which will lead to growth. India’s manufacturing sector is stagnant in comparison to its flourishing services sector. percent. After the launch of Make in India, September 2014, over 250 investment proposals for electronics manufacturing have been received, totaling an investment of Rs1.26 lac crore. Government’s Initiatives As per economic survey of 2016-17 poor infrastructure is preventing India from being cost efficient manufacturing hub. The cost involved in moving goods from the factory to desired destination is more in India than other countries. Government has allocated 4 trillion INR for infrastructure projects in 2017-18 budgets. Spending on energy, rail and road infra will be increased considerably. Another flagship projects is SANKALP, Rs.4,000 crore has been allotted to SANKALP (Skill Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for

Livelihood Promotion), this program is aimed at providing market-relevant training to 3.5 crore youth across the country. Budgets allocated and step taken to strengthen these programs show that government understands the importance of these programs. Ease Of Doing Business The process of applying for new business has been made online. Initial validity period of Industrial License has been increased to three years from two years. This will give enough time to licensees to procure land and obtain the necessary clearances/approvals from authorities. Form filling and other necessary procedure are put up online, thus reducing the time required. Reduction in paper work is making setting up

new business quicker and easier. Innovation plays important role in growth of nation. Start-up India is all about youth innovating products. Government ‘S Support to Manufacturing Unit Our corporate tax rate was close to 35%, which was the second highest in the world. Reduction in corporate tax to 25 % (for companies with turnover up to 50 crore), 95 % of the companies will benefit from this decision. This will not only help for better tax compliance by companies, it will also make it easier for the tax department to administer appropriate tax collections as well as reduce tax litigation. More importantly companies will be able to expand their business at faster

pace which in turn help in job creation. Small manufacturing units were reluctant to enroll apprentice in their facility, because of cost factor. Under Apprentice Protsahan Yojana government has started supporting the manufacturing unit by reimbursing 50 % of stipend paid during first two years of training. Empowering Youth At least 10 million young people enter the country’s workforce every year, but job creation in India has not kept pace with this influx, making rising unemployment a major challenge for the government. By 2020 India is expected to be the youngest population of the world, two third of the population will be eligible for work. In a recent employability skill test across domains only 38.12% were found employable, this percentage is very less compared to other developed and developing nations. Young generation should have the requisite skills, if we want foreign multinational companies to set up manufacturing units in India. Make in India cannot succeed without Skill India. This year government has allocated INR 17,273 crore towards Employment Generation, Skill, and Livelihood. Besides, the ministry will be setting up 100 India International Skills Centres that will conduct advanced courses in foreign languages to help youngsters prepare for jobs. Government understands that mere launching of schemes and allocating budget is not enough to generate awareness among youth about Skill India program, Government has roped

in Sachin Tedulkar as face of Skill India. Government’s marketing efforts are also commendable in spreading Skill India program. Divestment & Consolidation It is not government’s business to run a business, government must be facilitators in creating new opportunities. A lot of PSU were formed with intent to provide employment to large un-employed workforce. Some of the critical industries (like steel, energy) were bought under government control. Post liberalization, privation and globalization lot of companies invest in India, government must join hands with these private players. Divestment target for 2017-18 is 725 billion rupees. Divestment is a logical move ahead. If we want GDP to grow at 8 %, manufacturing will have to play an important role. Governments support to manufacturing units, empowering & encouraging youth (including serious marketing & promotion) with requisite skills are all part of strategies to make, Make in India successful. All these programs & initiatives cannot show results overnight, it will take few years to show results. Skilled youth in large number can turn around the economy. With help of government’s focused strategies of empowerment and successful Make in India, I don’t see 8% GDP growth a distant dream! It’s hard to know what to think about Artificial Intelligence these days. Almost everyone in the industry believes it to be a revolution as deep and as fundamental as the industrial revolution or the birth of the computer. Yet the field seems divided over when we will get to general intelligence and what that will ultimately mean for us. Some believe it will be our greatest invention yet and others that it may lead to our doom.

AI is hot, I mean really hot. VCs love it, pouring in over $1.5B in just the first half of this year. Consumer companies like Google and Facebook also love AI, with notable apps like Newsfeed, Messenger, Google Photos, Gmail and Search leveraging machine learning to improve their relevance. And it’s now spreading into the enterprise, with moves like Salesforce unveiling Einstein, Microsoft’s Cortana / Azure ML, Oracle with Intelligent App Cloud, SAP’s Application Intelligence, and Google with Tensorflow (and their TPUs). Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming the biggest issue on the agenda for many businesses. The current speed of development, the sheer range of possible applications, and the potential impact of

AI suggest that it’s time for CEOs to pay attention. What is Artificial Intelligence? AI will change the philosophy, practice and management of business. It is beginning to transform businesses and replace even senior management and leadership roles. CEOs must invest the necessary time and attention to understand what AI is and where the opportunities are. Distilling a generally-accepted definition of what qualifies as artificial intelligence (AI) has become a revived topic of debate in recent times. Some have rebranded AI as “cognitive computing” or “machine intelligence”, while others incorrectly

interchange AI with “machine learning”. This is in part because AI is not one technology. It is in fact a broad field constituted of many disciplines, ranging from robotics to machine learning. The ultimate goal of AI, most of us affirm, is to build machines capable of performing tasks and cognitive functions that are otherwise only within the scope of human intelligence. In order to get there, machines must be able to learn these capabilities automatically instead of having each of them be explicitly programmed end-to-end. It’s amazing how much progress the field of AI has achieved over the last 10 years, ranging from self-driving cars to speech recognition and synthesis. Against this backdrop, AI has become a topic of conversation in more and more companies and households who have come to see AI February 2017


as a technology that isn’t another 20 years away, but as something that is impacting their lives today. Indeed, the popular press reports on AI almost everyday and technology giants, one by one, articulate their significant long-term AI strategies. AI will impact the entire economy, actors in these conversations represent the entire distribution of intents, levels of understanding and degrees of experience with building or using AI systems. The pace of AI development has caught most unaware. Large scale investment is being made by companies like Google, IBM, Microsoft, Uber and Baidu. In some cases, firms are literally “betting the ranch” on AI. We might soon see anything from robot lawyers to ultra-intelligent mobile personal assistants. Many firms are looking at relatively narrow deployments to automate rule-based decision making and predict future demand and customer behavior from accumulated data. Others are looking at much broader uses such as intelligent HR, finance and legal advisors and real-time data analytics of live transactions. Perhaps some of the most extreme applications include the creation of “human free” automated businesses where

everything from strategy to operational processes are embedded “in the system”. These so-called “distributed autonomous organizations” could become increasingly common. They are already being used to manage millions of transactions - e.g. the automated dispute resolution systems in online auction platforms. AI is already being deployed to automate clerical, manual and semi-skilled labour and is now supporting and replacing professionals in domains such as engineering, medicine, legal, and accountancy. If you are building an AI-First application, you need to follow the data and you need a lot of data so you would likely gravitate towards integrating with big platforms (as in big companies with customers) that have APIs to pull data from. There’s so much valuable data in a CRM system, but five years ago, pretty much no one was applying machine learning to this data to improve sales. The data was, and still is for many companies, untapped. There’s got to be more to CRM than basic data entry and reporting, right? If we could apply machine learning, and if it worked, it could drive more revenue for companies. So naturally, we (Infer) went after CRM (Salesforce, Dynamics, SAP C4C), along with the marketing

automation platforms (Marketo, Eloqua, Pardot, HubSpot) and even custom sales and marketing databases (via REST APIs). We helped usher a new category around Predictive Sales and Marketing. Now, with machine learning infrastructure in the open with flowing (and free) documentation, how-to guides, online courses, open source libraries, cloud services, etc. machine learning is being democratized. Anyone can model data. Some do it better than others, especially those with more infrastructure (for deep learning and huge data sets) and a better understanding of the algorithms and the underlying data. You may occasionally get pretty close with off-the-shelf approaches, but it’s almost always better to optimize for a particular problem. By doing so, you’ll not only squeeze out better or slightly better performance, but the understanding you gain from going deep will help you generalize and handle new data inputs better which is key for knowing how to explain, fix, tweak and train the model over time to maintain or improve performance. It’s very important to understand where the user needs their predictions and this may not be in just one system, but many. We had to provide open APIs and build direct

A key driver behind machine learning is the rise of big data. In 1992 we collectively produced 100 GB of data per day, by 2018 we will be producing 50,000 GB of data per second. Data is permeating into every aspect of life and there is too much out there for any person, or any group of people, to be able to parse. Machine learning is helping us organize and make sense of these mountains of data.

integrations for Marketo, Eloqua, Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, HubSpot, Pardot, Google Analytics and Microsoft Power BI. Integrating into these systems is not fun. Each one has it own challenges: how to push predictions into records without locking out users who are editing at the same time; how to pull all the behavioral activity data out to determine when a prospect will be ready to buy (without exceeding the API limits); how to populate predictions across millions of records in minutes not hours; etc. These are hard software and systems problems (99% perspiration). In fact, the integration work likely consumed more time than our modeling work. This is what it means to be truly “predictive everywhere.” Some companies like Salesforce are touting this idea, but it’s closed to their stack. For specific solutions like predictive lead scoring, this falls apart quickly, because most mid-market and enterprise companies run lead scoring in marketing automation systems like Marketo, Eloqua and Hubspot. Let’s think about use cases and making predictive disappear in a product. This is a crucial dimension and a clear sign of a mature AI-First company. There are a lot of early startups selling AI as their product to business users. However, most business

users don’t want or should want AI they want a solution to a problem. AI is not a solution, but an optimization technique. At Infer, we support three primary applications (or use cases) to help sales and marketing teams: Qualification, Nurturing and Net New. We provide workflows that you can install in your automation systems to leverage our predictive tech and make each of these use cases more intelligent. However, we could position and sell these apps without even mentioning the word predictive because it’s all about the business value. Predictive is core to the value but not what we lead with. Where we are different is in the lengths we go to guide our customers with real-world playbooks, to formulate and vet models that best serve their individual use cases, and to help them establish sticky workflows that drive consistent success. We’ll initially sell customers one application, and hopefully, over time, the depth of our use cases will impress them so much that we’ll cross-sell them into all three apps. This approach has been huge for us. It’s also been a major differentiator we achieved our best-ever competitive win rate this year (despite 2016 being the most competitive) by talking less about predictive. Vendors that are

overdoing the predictive and AI talk are missing the point and don’t realize that data science is a behind-the-scenes optimization. It’s a fun category to be in (certainly helps with engineering recruiting) and it makes for great marketing buzz, but that positioning is not terribly helpful in the later stages of a deal or for driving customer success. Machine Learning The most important subset of AI is machine learning. A field which made big breakthroughs in the latter half of the 20th century but then lay dormant waiting for the processing power of computers to catch up with the demands that machine learning algorithms placed on them. TensorFlow, a popular library for machine learning, embraces the innovation and community-engagement of open source, but has the support, guidance,

and stability of a large corporation. Because of its multitude of strengths, TensorFlow is appropriate for individuals and businesses ranging from startups to companies as large as, well, Google. TensorFlow is currently being used for natural language processing, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and predictive analytics. TensorFlow, open sourced to the public by Google in November 2015, was made to be flexible, efficient, extensible, and portable. Computers of any shape and size can run it, from smartphones all the way up to huge computing clusters. Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) has become a topic of considerable interest over the past year. AutoML is not automated data science. While there is undoubtedly overlap, machine learning is but one of many tools in the data science toolkit, and its use does not actually factor in to all data science tasks. For example, if prediction will be part of a given data science task, machine learning will be a useful component; however, machine learning may not play in to a descriptive analytics task at all. Even for predictive tasks, data science encompasses much more

than the actual predictive modeling. Randy Olson (Data Scientist) states that effective machine learning design requires us to: 1. Always tune the hyperparameters for our models 2. Always try out many different models 3. Always explore numerous feature representations for our data Taking all of the above into account, if we consider AutoML to be the tasks of algorithm selection, hyperparameter tuning, iterative modeling, and model assessment, we can start to define what AutoML actually is. Automated machine learning will quietly become an important event in its own right. As deep neural networks, automated machine learning will begin to have far-reaching consequences in ML, AI, and data science, and 2017 will likely be the year this becomes apparent. In the near future, automated machine learning

(AutoML) taking over the machine learning model-building process: once a data set is in a (relatively) clean format, the AutoML system will be able to design and optimize a machine learning pipeline faster than 99% of the humans out there. One long-term trend in AutoML that these systems will become mainstream in the machine learning world. All the methods of automated machine learning are developed to support data scientists, not to replace them. Such methods can free the data scientist from nasty, complicated tasks (like hyperparameter optimization) that can be solved better by machines. But analyzing and drawing conclusions still has to be done by human experts -- and in particular data scientists who know the application domain will remain extremely important. India is referred to as the fastest growing economy in the world today. What is your viewpoint on current Indian Manufacturing Industry in terms of economy and technology? India’s Age of Compounding growth will take it to a $5 trillion economy by year 2025 as per various projections by government and other agencies. This economic growth offers huge opportunity for Indian manufacturing industries. Indian government aims to increase manufacturing contribution to GDP from present 19% of GDP to 25% by year 2025. India’s whole business ecosystem is being transformed through specific policy measures and budgetary support by government for a quantum growth in manufacturing. Recently, government has allocated Rs. 2.21 lakh crore for infrastructure sector in the Budget 2017 and aggressively pursuing policy interventions like GST rollout, startup India, make in India, Skill Development, cash less economy, tax benefits for MSME, ease of doing business

etc. to name a few. These measures will significantly debottleneck various supply chain and logistics impediments being faced by various industries at present and projected to reduce logistics costs to 9% from 14 % of GDP. However, India contributes to just 2% to global manufacturing output presently. Indian manufacturing is characterized by MSME’s which employs more than 90% workforce. These entities have very limited resources, capabilities and competence and work mostly on “Make to Print”. They compete mostly on cost advantage rather than with the strength of excellence in quality and delivery or on the bleeding edge of innovation or unique value preposition. They also mainly cater to local market in their niche sectors and market segments. If India wants to be a major player in the manufacturing globally, Innovation is critical to create new products and services which fuels growth in manufacturing. We have a long way to go. As per Global Innovation Index (WIPO, 2014) India ranks 76th among

the 143 countries and hence requires massive policy intervention to establish structures, knowledge and education, skill sets and processes to be top 5 innovative countries in the world. The multiple challenges of business growth amidst VUCA world and a demographics of the most digital native citizens in the world with beautiful diversity of every hue, poses humungous opportunity and equal measures of challenges. Leaders of these initiatives will have capacity and depth to solve world’s problems and citizens would have transformative qualities to collaborate and co create! What according to you is the most revolutionary concept that is driving the industry? Businesses now scale up exponentially with the platform and enabling technologies 3. Value creation is becoming seamless and circular economy requires increasing commitment to sustainability like Paris COP 21 commitment 4. Future manufacturing is bracing itself with Machine learning, IOT, Sensor networks, Deep data analytics, Virtual Reality, artificial Reality etc. and achieving unprecedented production flexibility and creation of evermore customized and smarter products. 5. Now horizontal innovations across sectors are creating unprecedented disruptions rather than vertical innovations specific to a sector. We will increasingly see one innovation impacting many sectors of economy simultaneously. By the time we realize and accept, its late in the game as world has already moved on to the next! Few examples to illustrate further Mobility Autonomous Vehicles, App operated taxi services, Electric and hybrid vehicles, ever connected cars etc. are changing the very concept of ownership, marketing, manufacturing, driving and service of the entire mobility. Additive manufacturing advancements are expected to further revolutionize product design and customization of products. E.g. GE’s latest

ceramic additive printing for aero engines is expected to reduce weight of the engine by one third while having massive thermal resistance properties with consequent performance in all aspects of engine performance. Personal mobility prototype by Airbus by 2017 is the next! We can expect mass adaption of new technologies in mobility as positive impacts will far outweigh the economic consideration hence duly subsidized and supported by government policies and subsidies. SMEs are considered to be the building blocks of industries. What kind of future do you foresee for the SMEs? Tiers structure of supply chain is going to be hugely disrupted. Future businesses will operate through platforms enabled with technology. SME’s will find it difficult to survive unless they innovate products and services unique to their business or quickly scale up to build and operate a platform. IMTEX 2017: A Platform for Path Breaking Technology

18th edition of South East Asia’s most acclaimed exhibition, IMTEX concluded on 1st of February. With inauguration of new halls, display of newest technology applied products and creation of network across the globe, IMTEX 2017 turned out to be a fine example of globalisation.

The leading platform for Machine Tools industry, IMTEX 2017 concluded with a bang on 1st of February. Creating an effective resonance in the machine tools world, the 18th edition of the expo took place at BIEC coinciding with the 10th anniversary of BIEC. The event was set in 6 different halls with a gross area of 66, 000 square meters and a new 17,500 square metres Exhibition Hall (Hall 4) was inaugurated by Mr. Girish Shankar Secretary (HI), Department of Heavy Industry, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Government of India. The exhibition attracted a footfall of 75,440 visitors. Orders worth Rs. 1,670 Cr and

enquiries to the value of Rs. 18,989 Cr were generated during the exhibition. Compared to IMTEX 2015 & Tooltech 2015 the booked orders have shown an increase of 16%, whereas the generated enquiries increased by 21%. For the first time an International Buyer Seller Meet was organized by IMTMA and EEPC (Engineering Export Promotion Council) which saw participation of 57 international buyers from 19 countries. Inaugurated at the hands of honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Siddaramaiah, the exhibition was blessed by the presence of Mr. Naushad Forbes,

As there are no moving parts inside the new cylinder, full force is delivered in the other end, and the operating frequency is also much above than the metal ones”.

The fully automated human like Robot at Festo Stall attracted huge visitors all the seven days. Renishaw’s Aid to Smart Manufacturing in India

Addressing the needs of manufacturing sector in India, Renishaw unveiled a range of its products at this edition of IMTEX exhibition. The British High Commission and the Department of International Trade expressed their joy in collaborating with Renishaw.

Renishaw took the opportunity to reveal a range of its new metrology and additive manufacturing equipments meet the requirements of the advanced manufacturing sector in India; from the need to produce parts with increasing complexity and tighter tolerances, to the drive to reduce costs, to increase speed of operation and the requirement to improve the ease-of-use for new technology. Launching the new products at the exhibition British Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Dominic McAllister said “The British High Commission and the Department of International trade are very happy to have worked alongside Renishaw

So obviously there are things that we have done right. But obviously it doesn’t mean that this the final end result. We are still striving to improve on this factor. You cannot of course make everything in India, machine tools’ range is extremely wide and everything is not economically viable to manufacture in India. To achieve some kind of major role, India needs to get 60% of the total market share and remaining 40% could come from

Machine tools industry needs to chart out its path on how it wants to move from current 45% market share to 60% market share and in doing that, all these new sectors of economy- defence, aerospace, infrastructure, energy, logistics, road constructions could contribute to the growth, so industry needs to make equipments suitable for these sectors, that will give us the 60 percent.

In our continued CSR round up, we are looking at solar energy, one of the most relevant and effectively conveyed forms of renewable energy. It got into limelight, with all the global countries committing to renewable energy goals in the recent Paris Agreement. We see now the interest from various companies in utilising this resource towards their CSR goals. Following are some of the principal factors that have enabled its popularity: Employee Productivity: The effects of global warming are real and more visible, day by day, which clearly would mean lower productivity owing to increasing heat

Efficient and Cheaper: Renewables are becoming cheaper and more efficient owing to remarkable innovation in manufacturing techniques, thereby making it a costeffective solution even for SME’s. In some cases, the prices have fallen by 80 percent over the last 8 years, thereby making it a consideration for both domestic and

industrial purposes. As a result, there’s now three times more wind power and 15 times more solar power in the world than in 2007. At the same time, there is a tremendous enhancement in efficiency of renewable energy. Thinner solar panels have been developed that enable generation of solar energy even in cloudy atmosphere thereby increasing the geographic and demographic coverage of solar application. This is a clear indication of the fact that the community has an increased care of the world we live in. Promotion of renewable energy has now become one of the important factors in assessing suppliers.

Inventory Manager

for Efficient Inventory Management!

Though every department has responsibility towards Inventory Management, this multi-pronged part in a business often necessitates engagement of an expert - Inventory Manager. An Inventory Manager is responsible for overall monitoring, co-ordination with every department, initiating necessary steps and controlling inventory which can be of various categories and types depending on their treatment and purposes.

In the previous part of this article, we saw basics of inventory management. We will continue our discussion further here. As said, inventory management is a collective responsibility. However, it cannot be managed well unless there is one person designated to monitor, coordinate, initiate and control. He may be called as inventory controller or inventory manager. Let us look at key tasks for this manager. Key tasks for inventory manager: • Regularly monitor level and value of inventories as consumables, raw material, WIP and FG • Ensure FIFO is followed • Safe method of storing inventories

• Special care for inventories like oil, inflammable liquids, chemicals etc. • Close monitoring and labeling of inventories that have fixed shelf-life • To decide on where to hold inventory and how much in supply chain • Salvaging dead inventories periodically • Verification of physical inventories against system periodically • Cycle count of inventory • Report regularly to management on status and plan to control • To work towards the target set by the management • To drive colleagues of other function like purchase, logistics and procurement to manage inventory

Inventory manager typically reports to supply chain in-charge person. Categories of Inventory Categorization helps to manage inventory better. The person responsible for each category may be different. The treatment to manage inventory of each category is different. Production Inventory This includes raw materials which will be processed further inside the company and other one bought from direct off shelf or made by supplier specific to our drawings. The latter is called as direct bought out

Inventory size of production material is influenced by two factorsInternal factors: Criticality of item, quality, value of items especially with strategic materials like tungsten, gold, silver and so on, lead time of procurement, lead time of manufacture, method of manufacture. External factors: Supplier lead time for manufacture, raw material availability in the market, seasonality, government policies which may affect imports and transportation. Work in Progress (WIP) Inventory These items are semi-finished and waiting for the next operation lying either in shop floor or in store. It could also be semifinished components or sub-assemblies which have been produced in one economic production batch and kept in storage for finishing operation or final assembly.

Capital Spares are held as contingency against breakdown whereas rotatable spares are interchanged. For example, pump is kept as rotatable spare where one is sent for servicing or repair other one would be used. Maintenance spares includes items used during maintaining and overhauling of a machine or equipment. For example, oil seals, gaskets, O-rings etc. Packing here meant as indirect material used in final packing. Scrap Scrap can be because of production process, through quality rejection, end of shelf life, effect of cleaning process or obsolescence. It is important to account the scrap and dispose periodically. Types of Inventory

These items are ready for despatch. These could have been produced based on the specific order from the customer or in anticipation of the order.

Depending on the type of consumption and purpose, following types of inventory comes up. Key question in inventory management is why should we keep inventory and how much? Based on the answer proactive measures can be introduced to control inventory at a specific level.

MRO Inventory

1. Cycle Inventory

MRO stands for Maintenance, Repair and Operating supplies. This includes consumables, spare parts and packing materials. Consumables are usually off the shelf items and used by more than one department. Inventory level is fixed by experience. Consumables include items like lubricating oils, cotton wastes, stationery etc. Some of the items could be hazardous

Buyer tends to keep cycle inventory higher to get advantage of discount that may come with higher quantity buying. Bringing down cycle inventory will lower blockage of working capital. hours of cycle inventory. 2. Speculative/hedge Inventory Here inventory is kept with a purpose. It could be anticipated price increase of the item, to exploit an opportunity or likely shortage of raw material in future. 3. Safety Inventory This is kept to satisfy the demand that exceeds forecasted figure. When the lead time of supply like that of import is more or when reliability of supply and lead time is low, then also safety stock is kept. 4. Seasonal Inventory It is stocked to match the seasonal demand of the product. For example, sweets for a festival in the year, rain coat in rainy season. 5. In-transit Inventory This is in between shipping locations. It is also called as pipeline inventory. The level of inventory here depends on the lead-time of transit and lead-time of supplies. 6. Anticipation Inventory This inventory is maintained in anticipation of strike, flood, factors that may have influence on demand. This could be as a risk mitigation measure. Talent Shortage!

Reality or a Cover-up Story ?

Talent Shortage is viewed as dearth of skilled candidates in the job market. However, often Talent Shortage experienced by a company is resulted from its own limitations in roping in proper talents due to irrational interview processes, budget constraints, and lack of suitable policies for interviewees.

Some of the things I enjoy being a Management Consultant are wide ranges of networking prospects, traveling across globe and opportunities to work across industries on a broad range of HR projects. In past one and a half years, I have been working with Automobile, Engineering, Financial Services, Entertainment, Information Technology, Distillery, and Beverages, and Auto Component Industries on projects such as Leadership Development, HR Automation, HR Systems Analysis, HR Processes Reengineering, Manager Development, Compensation and Benefits Analysis. In the month of November 2016, I was commissioned by the CEO of a leading player in the auto-component industry in Pune, a 215 million USD organization with 1,728

white-collar employees in three plants across India, to help them refine their manpower hiring processes with an astute focus on preparing the organization against ongoing talent shortage, which, according to them, had been affecting their expansion plans in India. At that point in time, my client had more than 65 open positions; some of which were open for over 180 days. Around the same time, Manpower Group, a leading global recruitment company, came up with its annual talent shortage survey results, announcing “40% of Global Employers Report Talent Shortages�. In this article, I will be sharing an overview of my diagnosis study with the client and the proposed project plan.

Before visiting their corporate office, for a meeting with the leadership team, including Vice President HR and AVP Talent Acquisition, I had few rounds of telephonic and offsite discussions with the CEO. To summarize his requirements regarding manpower requirement: he needed a ready pool of talented people, willing to take up challenging assignments at any given point in time, at any work site, positively motivated, working towards the requirement of clients with utmost sincerity and accountability, always meeting the threshold of On-time Delivery (OTD) and in the process of doing so add value to organizational growth and help us in creating a positive brand. To him, the educational and socio-economic background, gender, religion, physical appearance, and February 2017

industry background of the candidate was irrelevant. He also said, “However, whenever I discuss a new project with my teams or asks reasons for the delay in project execution or below acceptable OTD, I am often given reasons of a shortage of manpower”. My problem diagnose meeting with leadership team, which begun at 10 AM, within one hour of its start, turned into a blame game meeting, with functional heads blaming HR for their failure to source and attract good talent from the market; HR team was blaming external forces such as talent shortage in the market, poor education system overall, impractical expectations of candidates and poor work ethics of Millennial generation. Some of the key pain areas highlighted by leadership team were as follows: 1.Poor quality of resumes shared by HR and Recruitment Consultancies [Only 3-4 profiles out of 10 get shortlisted by the hiring managers] 2.Below average soft skills [Communication, Language, Time Management, etc.] among candidates 3.High Cost [Disproportionally high salary expectations of job candidates] 4.Too long waiting time [From the date of the Offer Letter, candidates take 60-90 days to join] A discussion with HR and Talent Acquisition Team brought forward following points – 1.Frequent changes in the job description by hiring managers 2. Opaque job requirements – Many times hiring managers mix 2-3 roles in one job February 2017

description and make it complicated to search 3.Unclear short-listing criteria are adopted by hiring managers [often candidates get rejected on the basis of their gender, marital status, age, religion, physical appearance, etc.] 4. Hiring managers want us to schedule interviews on working days during working hours only, making it difficult for candidates working in different cities to participate in the recruitment process 5. Few candidates turn for job interviews [While 7 out of 10 candidates come for the first round of the interview, only, 3 out of 10 candidates come for final round of interviews] 6. Poor offer acceptance and joining ratios [while 6 out of 10 candidates accepts the offer letter only 5 out of 10 joins on agreed joining date] 7. High first-year attrition rate [First-year attrition rate is 45%, while attrition rate among those who are working with the organization for more than TWO years is 12%] As we came to an end of our Day-1 of discussion, I asked the AVP – Talent Acquisition to schedule a meeting with THREE of their active Recruitment Partners. 60% of manpower requirements of the organization are filled through recruitment consultancies. Next day in my meeting with recruitment consultants following points was shared – 1. Hiring managers change interview

schedules at the last moment without any consideration which makes it difficult to coordinate with candidates for rescheduling the interview. 2. Midway through the recruitment process, the position is put on hold without any convincing response. Often, we are made to do aggressive follow-ups 3. Many times, we are given a requirement, which is a mix of 2-3 roles. Not only that, most often we are asked to work within constraints of location, educational background, industrial preference and limited budget. 4. Some hiring managers of the organization directly discuss their requirements with us and give us specifications which are is a contradiction with the job descriptions shared by the HR. By the end of first round of discussion I fondly began to remember the story of an Elephant and FOUR blind men. Once upon a time, there lived FOUR blind men in a village. One day the villagers told them, “Hey, there is an elephant in the village today”. They had no idea what an elephant was. They decided, “Even though we would not be able to see it, let us go and feel it anyway.” All of them went where the elephant was. Each one of them touched the elephant. “Hey, the elephant is a pillar,” said the 1st man who touched his leg. “No! It is like a thick branch of a tree,” said the 2nd man who touched the trunk of the elephant. “It is like a big hand fan,” said the 3rd man who touched the ear of the elephant. “It is like a huge wall,” said the 4th man who www.martupdate.com

touched the belly of the elephant. They began to argue about the elephant and everyone of them insisted that he was right. A wise man was passing by. He stopped and asked them, “What is the matter?” They said, “We cannot agree to what the elephant is like.” Each one of them told what he thought the elephant was like. The wise man calmly explained to them, “All of you are right. The reason each one of you is telling it differently is because each one of you touched the different part of the elephant. So, actually, the elephant has all those features what you all said.” That’s what is happening with TALENT requirement. Management defines the talent as per the requirement of business needs and its diversified expansion plans. However, the way it gets translated and interpreted by HR, Hiring Manager’s and Recruitment Agencies is very different from the vision of management team and requirement of business. As it gets cascaded down the hierarchy, the definition of talent gets diluted and instead HR and Hiring Manager’s get into an ongoing rift without understanding that both of them are working for the organization and not for one another, as they make it appear like. Thus, I understand that the shortage of a talent is an MYTH. It is a cover-up story created by talent acquisition team and hiring managers to wrap their failures and inabilities of attracting and hiring the right talent. The talent shortage happens whenever employers complain that they

cannot find people with just the skills and background they want at exactly the price they would like to pay. Organizations need to follow an approach of systems analysis, see a bigger picture and how their roles are interconnected. Before we proceed further, let’s reinterpret the Talent Shortage Survey of Manpower Group for the year 2016-17 – 1. The survey was conducted in 43 countries among 42,300 organizations. Among surveyed employers, 40% of Global Employers [48% in India] reported Talent Shortages. In other words, 60% Global and 52% Indian employers claimed that they always get required talent whenever they need, wherever they need and within their allocated budget. 2. Talent shortage cannot be seen in isolation. There are several factors that contribute towards talent shortage, such as – working environment, work-life balance, organizational culture, labor laws, social security, industry-academia collaboration, political stability, etc. 3. The survey highlighted the shortage of talent in India among following job titles – IT Personnel, Accounting and Finance Staff, Project Managers, Sales Manager, Customer Service Representatives and customer support, Technicians, Quality Controllers, and Buying and Procurement. Next time, when an organization will not be able to find, say, efficient project managers, they will

blame it on the poor talent supply instead of evaluating their recruitment processes. For the second and final phase of my discussion, I studied their recruitment processes, profiles of successful candidates and remarks of hiring managers on interview evaluation forms. I also prepared a questionnaire for the CEO, Vice President HR and few Hiring Managers. I also participated in few job interviews. Finally, a conclusion was derived that the talent shortage in this organization was not real instead it was an outcome of poor communication across hierarchies, and misinterpretations of messages. The deemed shortage of talent can be addressed if the organization will follow below-mentioned recommendations [I believe these recommendations will be of great help for any organization across industries – 1. Relocation – When an organization wants to play at a national or global level, why do they limit their talent search to one city or the worst one particular part of a city? Whenever any leader tells me that they don’t have a relocation policy, it becomes easy for me to conclude that they are not serious about TALENT. Many start-ups, smallsized and mid-sized organizations do not pay much attention to this critical aspect of talent attraction and hence lag behind in the race. Sadly, these are the same organizations that make maximum noise for talent shortage. Not having a right person in a right role is more expensive than hiring someone from a different part of the country and pay

them relocation allowance. 2. Widen the Talent Search market – From outside, it might appear that hiring someone from the payroll of your competitors might make your work easy and it might give you some inside information as well, however, that’s not the right approach all the time. Instead, expand the horizon of your talent search from SAME Industry to SIMILAR Industries to ANCILLARY Industries. Even within same industries, the working culture of different organizations varies, therefore, the challenge for someone to adapt to your organizational culture will remain same with a small degree of variation. 3. Employee Referral Programs – Attracting and hiring talent to the organization is not a sole responsibility of HR and Talent Acquisition Team, in fact, everyone in the organization, particularly the leadership team, is responsible for attracting talent to the organization through directed efforts of branding. Create an effective “Talent Reference Program” to reward those employees who are bringing talent to the organization through their family and friends. 4. Coach Interviewers – Being a good interviewer is a skill, which can be learned. As a part of leadership development program, train and coach your managers to be effective interviewers. Questions like – “Tell me something about yourself; what are your strengths and weaknesses; and

why you are looking for job change” are too general questions to tap the right talent. Prepare a questionnaire on the basis of skills and competencies required in candidates. Interviewers must prepare for the interviews and do their homework in advance. 5. implified, Superior and Scalable Processes – If a candidate is available in the job market, it means he is an active job seeker. He will join the organization that will first give him the job offer. He will not wait for your recruitment process to get completed before taking a decision, therefore, shorten the recruitment process. Complete all rounds of interviews, including assignments and assessments, if any, in a single day. Wherever possible, take panel interviews instead of rounds of interviews. In one-toone interviews, candidates often get rejected on the whims and fancies of interviewers, which is another reason for recommending panel interviews over rounds of one on one interviews. Longer the recruitment process, higher is the probability of candidate getting disengaged and walking out of the process. Any interviewer who has no time to take interviews is not serious about hiring talent, he must not complain about the shortage of talent. We are living in a talent market. We need them more than they need us. In a day, if a manager has TEN tasks to complete and talent acquisition is one of them then that must be his #1 priority. 6. Benchmarking compensation and

benefits - Benchmarking your compensation and benefits with the market is not once in a lifetime or once in a five-year kind of event. Do it yearly. Keep it abreast with the market. Compensation and benefits strategies of the organization play an important role in attracting and hiring good talent. Let’s accept that every talent comes with a price-tag. Check your budget, if you can afford it or not. If your budget for the role does not match the price-tag of talent, then let it go. Do not bargain and hire someone at a premium, if your budget doesn’t allow. When you bargain, you might get a new person on board but you will lose several other employees, dissatisfied due to an imbalance in internal equity. On the contrary, if you are hiring someone at a lower rate than your budget, you are preparing for certain firstyear attrition. Strictly remain in the FOUR walls of your budget. 7. Workforce Planning – Long ago I read, “Failing to plan is planning to fail” and “One hour of planning save 10 hours in execution”. However, in reality, planning is one among the most underused management tools. Workforce or Manpower planning is one such “annual event”, which does not get as much time and importance as it must get. Leadership teams often coverup their failures to prepare an effective workforce plan with phrases like – unsure business, economic uncertainty, volatile marketplace, system complexity, to list a few. Nonetheless, the reality is, an efficient

Planning is a skill that can be learned. Train your managers to be good planners. 8. Friendly Interview Schedules – Talent you are seeking to bring to your organization is working elsewhere unless you are looking for fresh graduates. Good candidates are unlikely to attend interviews on working days. Hiring Managers must schedule their interviews as per the availability of talent not as per their own convenience. Remember, you need them more than they need you. We are in a talent market. Screening interviews over phone calls, preliminary interviews through SKYPE, LYNC or other available video technologies are highly recommended. Unless you are willing to complete all rounds of interviews in a single day, for a higher turnout of candidates, it is recommended to schedule interviews on weekends or on holidays. In the past, I have successfully conducted early morning and late night interviews. 9. Create learning organization – Nothing is better than creating your own talent pool to fill in critical roles within the organization. Define competency framework of your organization, identify high-potential and high-performing employees, prepare gap-analysis and fill in the gap through robust leadership development programs and mentoring. Not only will this help in attracting and hiring good talent from the market but also in engaging, motivating and retaining existing employees. No doubt that February 2017

the compensation and benefits are decisive factors but talented candidates prefer to join organizations that allow them to sharpens their skills, learning new competencies and help in overall development. Prepare talent strategies that encourage certain roles to be filled through internal hiring ONLY. 10. Continuous Improvement through data analysis – Data capturing is the first step towards analytics and improvement. In the entire process of attracting and hiring talent there are several situations that provide opportunities to capture real-time data, such as frequent reasons for profile and interview rejections, job offer acceptance ratios, first year attrition rate and reasons thereof, rounds of interviews conducted before making a job offer, and reasons for rejecting the offer letter. In his article, “Why You Should Interview People Who Turn down a Job with Your Company”, Ben Dattner has said, “Every company gets rejected by job candidates, and you’re missing a big opportunity if you don’t ask these people why they did it. The next time you get a “No, thank you” call or email, explain that there are no hard feelings and dig deeper for more information. Focus on questions like: What did you see as the positive aspects of the role? What were your concerns about the role? What were the most important factors in the decision you made? What feedback or suggestions do you have for your interviews, interviewers, and the interview process itself? Can you provide feedback or suggestions for the hiring manager, human resources, or the organization overall? These conversations might be awkward, but if you don’t solicit feedback from people you’ve interviewed, they may give that

feedback publicly, like on a website such as Glassdoor. Analyse data to improve your processes and hire the best talent from the market to stay ahead of the competition. Conclusion Survey results are not accurate all the time, the latest example is recently concluded presidential elections in the USA. The talent shortage is an outcome of poorly drafted and executed recruitment processes, discouraging working culture, insufficient career development opportunities, and badly managed industry-academia relationships. Before looking outside to blame and make an excuse for our failure to attract and hire talent, let’s first look within and put our house, our processes, and system in order. My client has taken a first step towards fighting the war of talent shortage by bringing together all stakeholders, deciding to analyze the existing system, and taking a call to improve processes. It’s certainly not a once in a lifetime event. Process improvement is a continuous process. They have decided to improve their processes by capturing real-time data, analysis, and predictive index. Recently I was at Kanchipuram, a city renowned for producing one of the best silk sarees in the nation. I got an opportunity to meet Mr. Muthu, a 3rd generation weaver and he was very polite to usher me to his cottage where all the magic happened, trust me it was one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had. For the first time I witnessed an archaic loom in a functioning state, so intricate in its operation and majestic in its form. Mr. Muthu explained to me the complete process of weaving as he showed me around his cottage and at a certain point Muthu’s voice began to diminish as my eyes couldn’t move past one little object inside that ancient loom; it was the flying shuttle or weaver’s shuttle. I was mesmerised with the way the flying shuttle maneuvered inside the gigantic loom, as I kept watching it find its way through the yarns there was this ever growing urge to

catch it, but I knew no one could catch it except for Muthu. As I watched the flying shuttle, there were far too many analogies to life situations bustling inside my head, but the most striking analogy was something we are all in pursuit of.

Yes, I’m talking about Job Satisfaction. Job Satisfaction is like a flying shuttle in a weaver’s loom, everyone wants it but only a handful of skillful people can actually have it. I realized that the more I looked at it, the more tempting it was for me to stick my hand inside the loom and grab it, but the result would only be disastrous. So I asked Mr. Muthu as to what it takes to catch the flying shuttle and what he explained was just beautiful; he said that it’s not just proper training that will prepare a person, it is the combination of self-belief, sense of initiation and ownership, and the full participation

field of engineering? Find out who you are as an engineer; if you’re neither of them and you’re looking for more options, then I’m sorry to tell you, you are in the wrong business. I’m deliberately elaborate on this one because I want you to understand what it means and takes to be skilful at work. To be skilful you either have to be gifted for engineering or passionate about it; because only these two aforementioned personality types can and will make you want to learn, grow, perpetuate, advance and excel as an engineer. If not you would simply be extant as an engineer. Your skill set is directly proportionate to your knowledge. The more you know, the better you can put it work. As an engineer you cannot afford to stagnate with your skill set, you have to constantly update, evolve and grow your skill set. If your management is dissatisfied with you, you will never be satisfied with the management and eventually you will be dissatisfied with your work. • Believe In Yourself: If knowledge and qualification is like the ability to strike the ball for a boundary, then self-belief is the ability to not lose your wicket. Believing in yourself will propel your career in unimaginable ways because self-belief is the key to unlock those opportunities and move up the ladder of success. By not believing in yourself you are simply disrespecting who and what you are capable of. Truth is, you are your greatest enemy and self-belief is the only way to combat the enemy within you. • Be The Initiator: If the weaver had forced me or dared me to catch the flying shuttle I

would have simply sprinted in the opposite direction because nothing forced is ever enjoyed or appreciated. The urge to catch the flying shuttle was innate, it was initiated from within me and that compelled me to negotiate with Mr. Muthu to stop the loom so that I can hold the flying shuttle to know what it feels like. Be the initiator at your work place, when you initiate a new task, a new project, new methods, new strategies and whatsoever you will proceed with it with a sense of ownership, when you own something you will push and strive to give your best and never give up at it. • Holistic Participation: At least half of the individuals get lost at their workplace by simply letting their heart and mind wander off to the wonder world. It is good to have a dream about your life and about your future, but it’s even better to work and devotedly participate in making that dream a reality. Focusing your heart, mind, and soul into the work you do will make you efficient, passionate and unmatched at your workplace. The end result may be similar but the process, presentation and performance will definitely be unique and above par and that’s exactly what your management is looking for. Remember, your management will treasure you at the notice of your holistic participation. • A Magnet of Opportunities: Even while I was with Mr. Muthu in his cottage and he dedicated his time in explaining things to me, he never ceased to supervise or work. While he was orienting me about the weaving process he simultaneously came up with a new design, posted it on a retailer’s platform and instantly got new orders for that design. Ann Landers rightly said that

‘Opportunities are disguised as hard work’; your hard work will open up the flood gates of opportunity. You have to be vigilant and grab those opportunities that come your way. A combination of your hard work, skills, self-belief and self-initiation will make you a magnet of opportunities. I used to wonder why silk fabric was valued and regarded so highly and at some point I even thought that they were overrated, but my time with Mr. Muthu at his cottage industry made me understand the reason for the fabric to be valued so highly. Every silk fabric is unique starting from the yarns to the complete process of weaving and it has a personal touch to it. I understood that no two silk fabrics are alike and the aforementioned vitalities are the reason for it. When your work is like the process of weaving a silk fabric: original and intricate, it will be valued, honoured and desired for and when that happens you will experience a sense of satisfaction like never before, after all isn’t that all we want? Presenting Diligence at SIAT 2017 The automotive industry provided a creative platform to the engineering students in SIAT 2017 by organising a poster presentation competition enabling the students to explore and innovate. The students engaged in extensive research and presented their ideas through posters, giving remarkable concepts for development in the automotive industry. Working beyond conventions is what the young generation follows, although the olds are the ones that inspire these innovators. Converting an old 2-stroke non-auto start conventional vehicle into and HEV is the epitome of innovation derived from the conventional product.

Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT) is a benchmark event organized by ARAI biennially. SIAT serves as an important forum for exchange of ideas and brainstorming for the automotive industry. Over the years, the event has grown in stature and is now considered as a prestigious automotive event in the global automotive fraternity. ARAI had organised 15thedition of Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT 2017) in association with SAE International USA, SAEINDIA and NATRiP at its picturesque campus in Pune, from 18thto 21stJanuary 2017. This edition of SIAT had a special significance, since ARAI turned 50, a month prior to this symposium’s schedule. SIAT 2017 was memorable one, considering the grand finale of ARAI’s Golden Jubilee program.

In this symposium Student Poster Presentation Competition (SPPC) was organized to motivate young brains. This competition aimed at providing a platform to individual or a team of two students from India to showcase their innovative work done in the field of Future Automotive Technologies. Based on the theme of SIAT 2017, posters were invited from students on topics from categories: Sustainable Mobility (FCV/HEV/EV/BS -VI technologies) and Smart and Safe Vehicles and Smart Vehicles (Autonomous Vehicles/Connected Vehicles/ ADAS Adaptive front lighting). Engineering students of both UG & PG levels including Ph.D from all over India sent their project work in the form of posters. The initial screening of the draft posters were done by a panel of judges which comprised

experts from ARAI. 5 posters from each category, total 10, were selected for final round who were then invited during SIAT 2017 to display and present their posters to SIAT 2017 delegates and other participants at a prominent location in SIAT Expo area. The competition attracted a winning prize of 15000 INR and a sponsorship for an overseas tour by M/s Volvo Trucks India and M/s Cummins India Ltd. Based on judgement of all judges, Mr. Amit Gupta of CoEP and Mr. Shravan Mutha of VNIT Colleges became winners in Smart & Safe Vehicles & Sustainable vehicle category respectively. Awards were given on the hands of Mr. Rajan Wadheera, PresidentARAI, Mr. G. V. Rao, Director, Branding Volvo Trucks Ltd and Mr. Amit Mahadeshwar, General Manager, Cummins India Ltd.

Antiroll for a Small Race Car The theme for poster presentation was Safe and Smart mobility. We entered the competition with our poster based on Antiroll designed for a small race car. As racecars travel at high cornering speeds and high bodyroll can to make them susceptible to roll over and possesses a life threatening danger to the driver. As the suspension system affects the behaviour of vehicle, i.e. vibration characteristics including ride and handling, stability and cornering performance and roll over protection. Objective was to design and develop the antiroll bar mechanism for a small formula vehicle used for SUPRA SAEINDIA, operated by pushrods and rockers.

The antiroll bars are designed to reduce the body roll of the vehicle from 2.0째/g to 1.0째/g with the combination of ride springs and antiroll bar. The antiroll bar was designed in an innovative way which used two rotating cantilevers instead of a conventional torsion bar to provide antiroll moment. The vehicle model was built with the data in CarSim and was simulated for the body roll with and without antiroll bar. The front antiroll bar was designed with a new design which instead of Torsion bar used cantilevers for antiroll moment. The vehicle testing showed that the vehicles body roll was reduced by 50% with improvement in cornering speeds. The overall roll gradient

was reduced from 1.97째/g to 0.98째/g. Also this helped in increase in lateral acceleration due to higher rollover stability and better handling characteristics with slight power induced oversteer to negotiate tight turns in competition. The time taken by the vehicle to complete the skidpad was reduced by 1.44% and autocross lap times by 1.3sec. SIAT poster presentation gave us a platform to interact with the industry leaders in Safety and Smart mobility and to present our ideas in order to make the vehicle safer. We are looking forward to visit the Volvo factory in Sweden as it will give us an exposure to latest technology in the world.

Converting 2-Stroke Non-Auto Start Conventional Vehicle into HEV I would like to thank Mr. S S Ramdasi , Mr R V Mulik and Mr K R Kelkar for providing me an opportunity to participation in the event. Prior to current project I have also worked in various engineering events like BAJA and SUPRA during my undergraduate program. I have prepared a Prototype. Visitors & representative from various automobile industry houses admired the idea & suggested not to just stay limited only for Prototype but work on actual implantation of this technology in vehicles. I am looking forward to working on the same concept in future. It was a nice exposure, great platform & creative opportunity to present my work/ idea during SIAT 2017 event. As I took admission for M.tech at VNIT, I started working for a project, “Design and development of control Strategy for HEV” under the guidance of Dr. Shital S Chiddarwar Asst. Professor Mechanical Engineering Department VNIT Nagpur. While working on this project a question popped in my head that, can we convert the old 2 stroke conventional vehicle in to HEVs? This Idea made me to work in this direction. Growing concern over the Non-Renewable fuels has led to environmental impacts and oil depletion which has prompted the

researchers to study alternative solutions. One of the most trending solutions in today’s competitive world is Design and Development of HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicles). In India People have tendency to use old vehicles for longer durations. The old 2- stroke vehicles which are present in India are one of the major contributors of pollution. So for converting those conventional vehicles into HEVs, study is being carried out. Two-wheelers are an important mode of transport option in urban India and their high fuel consumption and emission contribution needs to be attended to improve the air quality. A 25cc 2-Stroke pulley start engine was chosen for study purpose. At the beginning stage of vehicle, speed demand is low and torque demand is high. In this situation ICE works in poor zone but at lower speeds, high amount of torque can be provided by electric motor and power to the motor can be supplied with battery. As speed demand increases ICE will support the drive and after specific limit ICE will act alone. ICE will split its power in 2 components; Drive train and Battery Charging Unit. By Considering Speed demand and SoC level controller will decide on which mode it

should work. Prototype Building While building prototype of vehicle, 2 motors operating at 1000rpm (max.) and 25cc 2 stroke petrol engines were taken. We built small frame in which front 2 wheels were fixed up with in wheel motors and rear wheel connected to IC Engine, which is connected to Starter motor by Chain Sprocket Drive. Prototype Operative Conditions The Prototype built operates in most optimal and stable range with economical performance as 50%-70% of rated speed of motor should work as EV. 70%-100% of rated speed it should work as HEV. Above these speed conditions ICE will operate alone. If SoC falls below 30% ICE takes complete care of drive system. By using this control strategy, 4.1L/100km fuel was used. Applications and scope By converting Old 2-Stroke Conventional 2 Wheelers by adding retrofit kit in it, fuel economy can be improved as well emission can be controlled. February 2017

The scientist behind this innovation Professor Jayan Thomas, a nanotechnology scientist at the University of Central Florida’s NanoScience Technology Center, was highly inspired by Marty McFly’s self-lacing Nikes in Back to the Future Part II which motivated him to develop self-charging textiles. He is also working on developing semitransparent solar cells that can be applied to windows, allowing some light to

pass through while also harvesting solar energy. Professor Thomas and his team developed filaments in the form of thin and flexible copper ribbons that were light in weight and consisted of a solar cell on one side and energy storing layers on the others, the team, then bought a small tabletop loom and were taught to weave the ribbons into a square of yarn. The concept shows that the filaments could be laced throughout the garments to power phones, sensors, personal health care gadgets etc. The energy they produce flow into the power grids or can be stored in a battery that can capture the flow of energy and store it to limit the portability. The technology is the answer for the shortcomings of solar cells. February 2017


The Flight with Optogentics Scientist have now added dragon flies to the list of birds, bats and insects for inspiration in designing air drones and research that requires wider areas to intercept. Today scientists are investigating on developing technologies that can guide the flights of these birds and insects, interact with and enhancing the unique adaptations that allow them to take to the air. Engineers have fitted dragonflies with tiny backpacks-mounted controllers that issues commands to the neurons that control the flight of these tiny insects. The project, known as DragonflEye is a collaboration between Charles Stark Draper Laboratory (CSDL) in Massachusetts who are involved in developing the backpacks that control the dragonflies and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The experts at HHMI are identifying, enhancing the neurons located in the Dragonfly’s

nerve cord coordinating for steering the insect’sflight and inducing genes that make it more responsive to light. The project uses a technique called optogenetics that employs light to transmit signals to neurons. The genetically modified Dragonflies are more light sensitive and hence easier to control through measured light pulses. The components that build the tiny backpacks are called optrodes created by CSDL. These optical fibers supple gently to wrap around the dragonfly’s nerve cord which helps the engineers to target the specific neuron related to flight of the insect. These flexible optrodes could also be essential in human medicine by enablingminiaturized diagnostics that safely access smaller neural targets and deliver higher precision therapies.

Optogentics has broadened the horizons of energy harvesting, algorithms, motion sensing miniaturising, all within a system that can fix itself within a small gene.

Lead Researcher Lei Wang and his team of Physicists from The American National University (ANU) have brought to life the imagining technologies from hi-end science fiction movies such as Star Wars by inventing a tiny device that creates the highest quality holographic images ever achieved. Part of the research was conducted in collaboration with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States and Nanjing University in China. The team was successful in creating complex Holographic images in infrared with the Device invented. The manipulation of lights performed by hologram enables the storing and reproduction of all information carried by light in 3D. Along with research in holographic study that may revolutionize the way world looks at augmented reality and futuristic display, the researchers are also looking out for alternatives in creating ultra

thin and ultra light optical devices for space research. The device can potentially replace the traditional bulky components with miniature cost efficient cameras used in astronomical missions by reducing the size and weight of the optical system on the space ships. The construction of the device uses millions of tiny silicon pillars that are about 500 times thinner than human hair. The new transparent material loses minimal energy from light while performing complex manipulation with lights. Dr. Kruk from ANU Research School of Physics and Engineering, who led the design, fabrication and optical testing of the devices, stated that the nano scale structure of the device helps it to evolve beyond the properties of natural materials and portray the stronger properties of holograms that can be used in range of applications. www.martupdate.com

Whether drying crops, heating buildings, or powering a water pump, using the sun can make the farm more efficient. Dairy is one of the industries, where solar thermal solutions are looked upon as an economical and viable option. MTA2017 to Spotlight New Technologies with Specialised Zones In a global manufacturing outlook report, 49 per cent of manufacturers surveyed were reported to be investing six per cent of their revenues in R&D and innovation, in a push to transform their businesses. Asian manufacturing companies surveyed exhibited the highest investment expectations, with a majority of respondents from China, Japan and India indicating they would spend more than six per cent of their revenues on technology and innovation. 25 per cent of the respondents have already poured investment in avant-garde technologies such as 3D printing.

The precise devices for combustion optimization are easy to operate and completely reliable. They take measurements directly after combustion so the oxygen value can be perfectly adapted to the fuel.

Reliable oxygen measurement is just as important for controlling an optimized combustion process as it is for emissions monitoring. In one of the toughest applications of industrial process automation, the analyzer must be easy to integrate and extremely resistant. Optimal combustion, however, relies on perfect dosing. Too little oxygen will result in incomplete combustion and, therefore, increased CO emissions. Too much oxygen, on the other hand, leads to very high heat loss via the exhaust gas. The ZIRKOR series provides an oxygen reference value for emission measurement in order to ensure reliable measurement results. There are three versions available:

Fluke Process Instruments has added four new single-color and two-color pyrometers to the Endurance series. The series now covers measured temperatures from 50 °C to 3,200 °C.
