It’s a pleasure connecting back with you all after a brief gap. It was during one of my latest trips to Bangalore, I received the news about clearance of 150 electric buses by Board of Bangalore Metropolitan Corporation from a national daily. With this Bangalore will become the first city to have such a large fleet of Electric Buses for Public Transport in the country. Considering the time taken by public sector undertakings on changing their policies, this radical shift towards Electric Buses by BMTC was thought provoking about the future of mass transit system.

During the same time, news of Ashok Leyland’s launch of ‘Circuit’ Electric Buses inspired us to research more on the development of such ideas and brings to you, our loyal readers, a feature that shows the shift in industry towards adapting the EVs. In 2014, a Chinese Manufacturer approached BMTC with the proposal of inducting Electric Buses in their fleet, and offered an Electric Bus free for trial. At that point of time, the cost of an Electric Bus was three times higher than a regular diesel bus, but the operational cost was 2.5 times lesser. Moreover the pollutionfree tag came as a huge relief to our major metros, struggling with absence of quality air and global warming. The Western countries have kick started the deed by replacing fuel vehicles with Electric ones, and in India local manufacturers like TATA, Ashok Leyland, JBM, KPIT are coming out with Electric Buses and the investment on procuring buses are going to come down. Our team has secured a detailed report about such recent developments along with the challenges the Automobile Components industry is going to witness by this paradigm shift.

A proud moment for every student in this country, a group of Engineering Students from 8 different batches with their mentors, launched a nano satellite with the support ISRO, completely functional by now: Swayam by College of Engineering Pune. We take this opportunity for congratulating the entire team who were involved in this project, specially the teachers, who made a class room thought to reality with eight years of hard work. Nazia talks with the team who finally witnessed the launch at Sriharikotta and a tribute to their excellence is published in this edition, I am sure you noticed the shift we brought into the contents of MART from October issue, bringing interesting reads varied from Cutting Edge Technologies, Innovations, Fun Facts etc taking Technical Journalism to new and different perspectives. EtherCAT Technology Group Welcomes 4000th Member award. He explains the reason for joining the ETG as follows: “Beyond the high quality and efficiency, the individuality we gain differentiates our packaging solutions. We have benefitted from the openness and flexibility of EtherCAT for quite some time, and have recently started to work with EtherCAT P as well. Therefore, official membership in the ETG was the next logical step for us.”

Electric Vehicles: A Solution to Climate Change and Air Pollution In a world where environmental protection and energy conservation are growing concerns, the development of the Electric Vehicle has taken on accelerated pace to fulfil this needs. EVs can provide emission-free urban transportation. Tesla has boosted the awareness of the electric car in India, and the Mahindra Reva e2o can suddenly find itself in pole position in a difficult Indian market. Pune-based electric bike maker Tork Motorcycles has unveiled India’s first all-electric motorcycle recently. In the wake of environmental degradation, the researchers in the manufacturing sector have come up with a bunch of technological advancements that have the potential to restore or deter the environmental depletion. Carbon emission being one of the prime concerns, the commercial vehicle industry has taken the initiative to counteract the problem by introducing Electric Vehicles. Electric Vehicles are designed to run on electricity rather than on petrol or diesel, ensuring minimal emission of toxic gases.

The history of electric vehicle can be traced back to 1834 when Thomas Davis invented the first Electric Car that was

powered by a battery. Although, factors such as, unavailability of components and underdeveloped battery technology contributed to the decline of Electric Vehicles. Since then, EVs underwent several experiments and testing, but never reached the roads in a commercial way.

“Indian Component Manufacters should Adapt Newer Technologies for EVs” Dr. Seshu Bhagavathula, Chief Technology officer, Ashok Leyland Limited, pursued his Masters in Physics and Electronics at IIT Bombay, India and University of Stuttgart, Germany, and went on to finish his Ph.D., in High Frequency Technology for space applications at the University of Stuttgart.

While conversing with MART, Mr. Bhagavathula reveals the technical details of Ashok Leyland’s new launch ‘Circuit’ and enlightens us about the viability of the bus in India.

Traditionally, Ashok Leyland has had a history of firsts in the commercial vehicle industry. We have always looked at the future and had products / platforms that would meet the future requirements of the nation. In the mobility business, we can truly claim to be pioneers with having brought the first power steering in commercial vehicles.

In a history of many firsts where we have constantly innovated and kept ourselves ahead of the curve, we were also the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to take the initiative for a cleaner and greener environment. To fulfill these, we came up with India’s first CNG Bus in 1997, India’s first Hybrid Electric Bus in 2002, India’s first CNG Hybrid Plug-in Bus in 2010. While the country is looking at moving to Euro 6 in 2020, Ashok Leyland has already showcased capability in Euro 6 technology and engine in Auto Expo 2016.

While we had the technology with us, the import of such technology was highly prohibitive. This was a great challenge.

Also, the fact that the technology existing abroad will not and cannot be used in Indian conditions. It required engineering of a different kind to adapt the vehicle to Indian road and load conditions. These were the challenges that had to be addressed while developing an electric vehicle suited for India.

In continuation to our commitment to quality, better, clean and green technology, we have re-invented ourselves by indigenously developing India’s first Electric Bus. We launched the Electric bus in India in the year 2014 by bringing in technology from our subsidiary company in UK, Optare.

However, since the import costs were very high and the need for green technology imminent, we decided to leverage the December 2016

What were the challenges faced from prototype to the launch of the Electric Bus?

Could you explain the major technological shift in comparison to manufacturing with traditional fuel Bus? Besides the interdisciplinary nature of the drive train & energy storage aggregates, the quantum of electronics and the lines of software code has increased multifold.

The need of hour is to upskill dealers and technicians in the knowhow, handling and servicing of these components.

Could you talk about the indigenous technology used and your major partners in this project?

Optare, the bus manufacturing company in UK that we own is our technological partner.

While we had the knowledge within the company, we had to leverage it to use it for Indian road and load conditions.

How the industry will adapt the technological change including the component Manufacturers?

While the technology and vehicle has been indigenously developed, the batteries still need to be imported from US. This keeps the costs high. Hence, there is a need for Indian component manufacturers to adapt and bring in newer technology that will make these buses more affordable to fleet operators.

Will the electric buses be viable considering the poor infrastructure conditions in Urban as well as rural India?

Circuit series electric bus has been particularly designed to suit Indian road and load conditions – be it urban, semi-urban or rural. It has been tested to handle uneven terrain or hilly terrain as well.

What are the future innovations we can expect from Ashok Leyland to bring more efficiency into the electric bus to make it more India Centric?

Circuit series of buses will be brought out in other platforms and variants as well to suit all type of applications and requirements.

What are the user centric features of the bus?

What are your plans to popularise this mode of transport among masses?

India is a landlocked country.

The infrastructure for setting up bus transportation is the lowest amongst any mode of transport.

Compared to any other mode of transport, this is also the fastest. There are many success stories of BRTS. One must have the ability to have vehicles which are differently fuelled, different entries like entry+1, entry+2, etc., front engine and rear engine, FOH door, BRTS applications, and emergency doors related to various RTOs. Ashok Leyland has a product portfolio which encompasses everything and we can meet customer’s requirements with respect to that particular

region. This is also how we will continue to engage with both private players, Public Private Partnerships, and STUs. Any scheme that the Government leverages, whether it be MOUD, MORTH, Make in India, we will engage with the Government to make such schemes possible.

As everyone is aware, we have Electric vehicle, Hybrid vehicle, Diesel vehicle and the complete gamut of product portfolio.

We are first in the country to launch a Double Decker Bus, Vestibule Bus, CNG Bus, Hybrid Electric Bus, CNG Hybrid Plug-in Bus, World’s first front engine fully flat floor bus, India’s first rollover compliant bus, and indigenous Electric Bus. We have always had the user or the stakeholder’s requirement as our primary objective to come up with new product portfolio / platforms.

Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has an ambitious plan to operate all state-run buses on electricity.

He said the move will not only reduce pollution but also help cut fares by 50%. So, for a cost conscious country like India, would you entitle Electric Buses as a more economic solution than the regular buses running on petrol or diesel or even CNG? The Government of India has an ambitious plan to operate all state-run buses on electric platform. This is also in consonance with the Paris Summit 2016 which is promoting a greener environment globally, where our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had also signed and committed to India being a part of a positive impact on climate change.

Apart from the above, the Make in India is a programme that is close to the Prime

Our Circuit series of buses are clean, green technology, made in India for India.

Under the FAME scheme, the Government provides subsidy to electric vehicles and we are currently showcasing the Circuit series of buses to all STUs. What is your strategy for the domestic market? Are you looking into the global market for electric bus?

The DHI has come out with the scheme which is aimed at faster adaptation of mobility for electric vehicles. There are subsidies available. In line with those subsidies, we will endeavour to work with customers, make vehicles in India and ensure that these vehicles are available relevant to applications. Hilly terrain will need a 900mm application, primary metros will require lower floor buses. So, we will try to encompass and build December 2016

an electric vehicle which is efficient for that particular application.

We already have electric bus which are being made in Optare. These vehicles are being sold in London.

Depending on the evolution of the business world-wide, whether we make the vehicles in India and sell in some other parts of the world, or whether we make it in England, Ashok Leyland has the ability to build and feed the global market needs.

ULTRA MCV: Tata’s Fascinating EV Concept Tata Motors has constantly endeavored to bring technologically rich products to its customers and end users. Tata Motors’s remarkable, most-fascinating Electric Vehicle concept – the Ultra Electric Bus – is one step to this goal. Featuring a fullelectric drive-train that runs with absolutely no emissions, the Ultra Electric is packed with attractive features, both inside and outside including the exterior design.

True to the nameplate, the Ultra Electric bus has been built on the popular Ultra MCV (Medium Commercial Vehicle) trucks platform. The bus has been flexibly designed to suit the urban commutation requirements needs ranging fromoffice staff, school and general city transportation. TORK has built India’s first Electric Motorcycle. What inspired you to opt for electric motorcycle instead of gasoline motorcycle?

It started as a college project in 2009 when the founding team of Tork Motors wanted to make the world’s fastest electric motorcycle.

However, the team eventually realized it would be a very expensive proposition and focused towards building not only India’s first but the fastest as well.

EVs are trending in due to the alarming environmental conditions. But considering the source of electricity (coal being the

major source in India) used to power the batteries, the environmental conditions remain unchanged. Would you say Electric Vehicles are an effective solution to fight environmental issues? – Electric vehicle is a smart solution for individual transportation in a city due to hassle free driving, low NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness) value, no smoke and very low maintenance. Also low running cost is the added benefit. We at Tork Motors do not promote this platform as a complete solution, but definitely a much better option in the face of rising environmental concerns.

India is still at a nascent stage when it comes to electric vehicles and the technology used in them. How do you see the future of Electric Vehicles in India to be?

India is at a nascent stage only as far as adoption of EVs is concerned. The country has adequate technology to produce smart EVs. The biggest challenge with this is a consumer’s mindset and perception towards what an electric vehicle can actually deliver when compared to their conventional counterparts. However more and more awareness is building owing to the government’s push to encourage acceptance of this platform and confidence in the Indian

The future of EVs in India is likely to be slow adoption to becoming a daily necessity. Having said that, the future is definitely electric and it holds a lot of potential.

The EV industry is facing problems disposing the battery wastes. Even recycling of the battery is not financially sound. For example if we recycle Lithium batteries, the extraction of lithium turns out to be more expensive than mining new lithium. Does TORK have any strategies to deal with the challenge?

Tork works with reputed and trusted brand partners for the supply of battery cells who are capable of solving battery supply issues.

We purely focus on our product and making sure that it is the best value proposition for our patrons.

Is it an indigenous product or did you have to import any technologies in order to get desired results?

The Tork T6X, our first commercial offering

For example, if a company is manufacturing crank shafts for a specific car model, demand of crankshafts can be correlated to demand of cars. Since OEMs can predict demand

On the other hand, if the company is manufacturing a product which has no link to demand of other products, then forecast and maintaining inventory is a challenge. As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues its run as one of the most popular technology buzzwords of the year, the discussion has turned from what it is, to how to drive value from it, to the tactical: how to make it work. Internet of things (IoT) will produce a treasure trove of big data – data that can help cities predict accidents and crimes, give doctors real-time insight into information from pacemakers or biochips, enable optimised productivity across industries through predictive maintenance on equipment and machinery, create truly smart homes with connected appliances and provide critical communication between self-driving cars. IoT data is most valuable to us when it can immediately inform action.

That means that data must be analysed immediately and accurately to maintain a continuous flow of information and feedback within the enterprise and its connected devices. The possibilities that IoT brings to the table are endless. As the rapid expansion of devices and sensors connected to the Internet of Things continues, the sheer volume of data being created by them will increase to a mind-boggling level. This data will hold extremely valuable insight into what’s working well or what’s not – pointing out conflicts that arise and providing high-value insight into new business risks and opportunities as correlations and associations are made

Internet of things (IoT), is the internetworking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as “connected devices” and “smart devices”), buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. It is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-tohuman or human-to-computer interaction.

IoT allows objects to be sensed and/or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit. When IoT is augmented with sensors and actuators, the technology becomes an instance of the more general class of cyber-physical systems, which also encompasses technologies such as smart grids, smart homes, intelligent transportation and smart cities.

IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microservices and the internet. The convergence has helped tear down the silo

walls between Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT), allowing unstructured machine-generated data to be analyzed for insights that will drive improvements. IoT links smart objects to the Internet. It can enable an exchange of data never available before, and bring users information in a more secure way.

Companies like Cisco estimates the IoT will consist of 50 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2020. Gain deeper insight with analytics using our IoT System to enhance productivity, create new business models, and generate new revenue streams.

This sounds great. However, the big problem will be finding ways to analyze the deluge of performance data and information that all these devices create. These changes have been based upon the progress in each area, and the needs that each area meets. For example in the early 1980’s robotics was a large thrust in artificial intelligence. At that time benefits could be seen in manufacturing applications. In the late 1990’s the blossoming of the Internet pushed the importance of intelligent agents forward for performing routine tasks and complex searches. At the same time, throughout the 1980s and 1990s, orders of magnitude advances in computer processing power have allowed hurdles in speech recognition and image processing to be overcome. The maturity of each of these technology areas also differs. Expert Systems and Automatic Speech Recognition are among the most mature while Natural Language Processing and Intelligent Agents remain in early stages of development.

Machine learning is one of the most important technical approaches to AI and the basis of many recent advances and commercial applications of AI. Modern machine learning is a statistical process that starts with a body of data and tries to derive a rule or procedure that explains the data or can predict future data. This approach— learning from data—contrasts with the older “expert system” approach to AI, in which programmers sit down with human domain experts to learn the rules and criteria used to make decisions, and translate those rules into software code. An expert system aims to emulate the principles used by human experts, whereas machine learning relies on statistical methods to find a decision procedure that works well in practice.

An advantage of machine learning is that it can be used even in cases where it is

infeasible or difficult to write down explicit rules to solve a problem. For example, a company that runs an online service might use machine learning to detect user log-in attempts that are fraudulent. The company might start with a large data set of past login attempts, with each attempt labeled as fraudulent or not using the benefit of hindsight. Based on this data set, the company could use machine learning to derive a rule to apply to future login attempts that predicts which attempts are more likely to be fraudulent and should be subjected to extra security measures. In a sense, machine learning is not an algorithm for solving a specific problem, but rather a more general approach to finding solutions for many different problems, given data about them.

Deep learning is a branch of machine learning based on a set of algorithms that attempt to model high-level abstractions in data by using multiple processing layers, with complex structures or otherwise, composed of multiple non-linear transformations.

Deep learning is part of a broader family of machine learning methods based on learning representations of data. Deep learning is just another name for artificial neural networks (ANN for short) but in a more refined and easier avatar. They have been existing for more than 40 years. Finding connections between variables and packaging them into a new single variable is called feature engineering. while Deep learning is automated feature engineering. Artificial neural networks are generally presented as systems of interconnected “neurons” which exchange messages between each other. The connections have numeric weights which can be tuned based on experience, making neural nets adaptive to inputs as well as capable of learning.

Now it is common to have neural networks with 10+ layers and even 100+ layer ANNs can be tried upon. We can essentially stack layers of neurons on top of each other. The lowest layer takes raw data like images, text, sound, etc. and then each neurons stores some information about the data they encounter. Each neuron in the layer sends information up to the next layers of neurons which learn a more abstract version of the data below it. So the higher you go up, the more abstract features we can learn.

Eco-friendly Transportation for Colleagues Tesco’s CSR work is run on the backbone of colleague volunteering – be it tree planting drives or engaging the community with projects like solar lights. Their ground-up, colleague-led approach puts the focus on the human contribution and gets a significant chunk of our colleague population involved in our CSR as active participants.

Here are a few initiatives by Tesco Bengaluru: Eco-friendly transportation for colleagues: Tesco Bengaluru becomes first corporate to adopt an eco-friendly transportation mode for their colleagues. In association with Lithium Urban Technologies they inducted an electric car fleet for colleague transportation. Lithium Urban Technologies are pioneers in sustainable urban transportation that uses smart cars powered by technology. Tesco Bengaluru’s sustainability effort collaborates and creates a wider ecosystem involving colleagues, corporates, NGOs and government bodies.

They replaced all our diesel small car fleet with 40+ emission free Mahindra Reva E20 electric cars in 2015. Their pioneering effort aimed to reduce their carbon footprint and create a positive impact on the environment. This is backed by the required Fast Charging infrastructure at Tesco Bengaluru premises. They also benefit from Lithium’s ‘Assurance Stack’ that ensures safety of our colleagues, transparency of

operations and productivity of the fleet.

Vehicles can be tracked 24/7 both at Tesco’s transport operations centre and at Lithium’s Network Operating Centre. Aligned with the existing environment-friendly policies, this initiative is aimed at making travel for Tesco colleagues easier and more convenient.

Besides zero emission, these electric cars have lower running costs when compared to traditional counterparts. The full value chain is also green as Tesco Bengaluru draws over 50% of its power from hydropower sources, a part of their larger sustainability campaign. a) Solar lights for the communities: Tesco Bengaluru partnered with the local communities and their volunteers discovered the need for street lighting in and around the adopted school at Whitefield. They felt it important to provide a sustainable lighting system so that residents were able to go about their day-today activities with sufficient lighting. Having identified these areas, Tesco Bengaluru came forward to drive this initiative and contribute funds under its CSR programme to light up these locations in Whitefield.

The volunteering team at Tesco Bengaluru identified a few locations that were in need of basic lighting. Their team had visited the Nallurahalli village for a tree plantation initiative and Gandhipuram for a street cleaning drive. During these projects, the team identified a dearth of basic lighting; also electric poles weren’t erected in these

areas. Through initial interactions with the community, villagers expressed concerns about unlit roads at night making it difficult for them to go about their lives safely. To bridge this gap, Tesco Bengaluru installed 19 solar lights in public and learning spaces at the Gandhipuram and Nallurahalli villages. b) Building awareness around key events and milestones: Around World Environment Day on 5th June, the team organised a ‘Back To School’ volunteering event at a government school, part of Tesco Bengaluru’s CSR School Adoption Model. They engaged the children in activities themed around World Environment Day, encouraging them to reuse plastic and use waster creatively. The children took part in an art competition on environment-related topics, made paper bags and created fun toys and pen stands with used plastic bottles. c) Afforestation drives: Tesco’s tree plantation drives, in partnership with ‘Say Trees’, an organisation for nature lovers, aims to revive the city’s shrinking green cover by planting saplings in areas that are barren and devoid of greenery. Drives were conducted in different parts of Bengaluru from Whitefield to Koramangala and we planted over 6500 saplings in the city. By partnering with relevant stakeholders we believe we can improve Bengaluru’s green cover and quality of life for its citizens.

Say YES to Sustainable MSMEs in India The micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector plays a vital role in India’s economy. It contributes to 40% of India’s GDP and accounts for a workforce of 117 million. YES BANK, in FY 2014-15, launched ‘Say YES to Sustainable MSMEs in India’ a first of its kind CSR initiative, to promote environmental sustainability (through Energy Efficiency) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) within the Indian MSME sector. This program was launched to help MSMEs increase their energy efficiency (EE), enhance resource efficiency and positively contribute to emission reduction.

Through the interventions YES BANK has taken actions to address the growing issue of climate change and promote responsible consumption of resources thereby aligning the project with the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Under the initiative, in FY 2015-16, energy efficiency projects were implemented in 71 MSME units, improving their energy efficiency in the range of 15-20% and resulting in total savings of over Rs. 2.2 Crore. The project resulted in a reduction of more than 6,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per annum. Additionally, 275 MSMEs also benefited from energy efficiency sensitization workshops.

The project, in its first year was implemented in three locations and in the second year was scaled up to 9 states covering 18 locations. Now in its third phase, the project is being implemented in 11 states covering more than 12 MSME sectors including Foundry, Dyeing, Rubber, Plastic, General Engineering, Textile, Rice Mills, Auto ancillaries, Sports goods and Handicrafts.

The aim is to make ‘Say YES to Sustainable MSMEs in India’ a one-stop-solution for EE and OHS requirements of MSMEs in India, enhancing overall performance levels while achieving lower carbon emissions.

Cairn takes a step towards Clean and Healthy India Cairn takes a step towards clean and healthy India In what seems to be one of the biggest sanitation and health intervention, Cairn India.

In partnership with Rural Development Organization (RDO) & Zilla Parishad under governments Swachh Bharat Abhiyan constructed 20,000 toilets in Barmer District, Rajasthan. Statistics show that the district has more than 90% people practicing open defecation in rural areas and 85% overall December 2016

The target was to built 20,000 household toilets and educate people about the need of better sanitation and health conditions. 2.6 million years old tools have also beendiscovered in Gona, Ethiopia. Largest findof similar age tools has been in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Tools from both sites are like those found near Lake Turkana. All these tools are collectively known as Oldowan tools. These tools are of simple construction, mostly using core forms, made from river pebbles; pebblies being struck by a spherical hammer-stone to cause fractures removing flakes from one surface, creating an edge and often a sharp tip. One exampleis shown in figure 2.

Blunt end of a stone tool is called the proximal surface and the sharp end is the distal. When using the tool, the hominid held the proximal surface and brought the distal surface down hard on an object he wished to detach or shatter.

Mode II: Acheulean Industry

Mode IIstone tools, found in France,date back 1.7 million years. An example of these more sophisticated tools is the hand axe shown in Figure 3.

Earliest stone tool makers Kenyanthropusplatyops, wholived near the Kenyan site where the Lomekwi 3 tools were excavated, and Australopithecus afarensis, known from the famous fossil ‘Lucy’, are both likely candidates for being the first stone tool makers.

Both these species had a mixture of human and ape-like features, with relatively small brains.However, they certainly had intelligence, cognition and manipulative abilities required to make stone tools.In fact, their tool making techniques and resultant tools remained practically unchanged till 10,000 BC. This is despite us, the more intelligentHomo sapiens, having emerged 200,000 years ago in Ethiopia.

Dispersal of Stone Tools Stone tool making and usage existed in southern and eastern Africa between 2.6 and 1.7 million years ago.

their usage throughout Africa and Eurasia: as far east as Java by 1.8 million years ago and Northern China by 1.6 million years ago.

Neolithic Stone Tools Ground stone tools were first made in Japan around 40,000 BC in the Japanese Paleolithic period. Elsewhere, ground stone tools became important during the Neolithic period beginning about 10,000 BC. Ground stone implements, includingadzes and axes, were manufactured using a long labour intensive process of repeated grinding against an abrasive stone, often using water as a lubricant. Because of their coarse surfaces, some ground stone tools were used for grinding plant foods and were polished not just by intentional shaping, but also by use. An excellent example of Neolithicstone tools is axe heads found at a 2700 BC Neolithic manufacture site in Switzerland.

Every summer almost the entire nation relishes on one thing: mangoes. Mangoes are a delight for the young and the old alike.The inner child in almost everyone is awakened at the sight of this delicious fruit.

I’m not a great lover of mangoes and that in turn made me curious as to why such glee for this humble fruit. My curiosity resulted this article.

Ever asked yourself why mango holds the crown of being the King of fruits?Ever cared to know? I didn’t too, until I saw this little kid on the road engrossed in a juicy mango, who couldn’t care less about dirtying himself. As I began to do my research on mangoes the facts and insights were mindboggling. We all thought that the varied range of its taste is the reason for its title, we were wrong all the while. It’s the versatility in its nature,the reason for its title. Yes, Mango is the only fruit that can be consumed as it is, in any form of its state (raw, unripe, ripe) without having to prepare it.This quality can and should be attributed to the tree alone, after all it is because of the tree the fruit is, what it is.

Massive Structure The mango trees that we have seen growing up as kids are not the actual size of its potential, it has been stunted externally for the ease of harvest. On an average a mango tree grows up to 90 feettall and to a crown width of 40ft.

Deep and Widespread Roots I saved the best for the last, because the highlight of a Mango tree is its deep and widespread roots. A Mango tree can grow its roots to 40ft in depth and as wide as 40ft in radius. I’m going to be elaborate on this, because I want you to become an Engineer that the whole management will look up to.

SWAYAM

How often does it happen that people hold on to their dreams till they have achieved it, enduring all the ups and downs? Well, here is a story of patience and passion that inspires us on many levels. One project, eight years and participation of more than 250 students! SWAYAM has earned it all and so have the minds behind it.

Nazia Ali nazia@martinfotech.in The success story of SWAYAM is orbiting the earth with a great velocity. What started with a mere support to a fellow institute, turned into a fully fledged research and development mission. It all started 8 years ago, when the students of IIT Bombay approached students of the Astronomy Club of COEP, seeking help to build a ground station to track their student satellite Pratham.

The students from Astronomy Club were struck by an idea to build their own satellite.

Soon the idea was fetched to the professors and management. After continuous discussions and meetings, the team of SWAYAM reached to a conclusion where they decided to build 1U satellite which

could be used for two way communication between small vessels in sea which needs support or rescue and ground station situated at COEP and from there the information could be given to nearest port and rescue can be arranged.

After rigorous brainstorming sessions and securing approval and financial assistance from COEP for the project, the team was able to attain conceptual design review and permission from ISRO to proceed with the project by 2010. The subsequent years saw gradual but substantial developments in the project.

In the journey to space, the team of SWAYAM ventured many star moments.

First was when the team was successful in establishing the base station at COEP in 2012. The preliminary design review was successfully cleared by CSAT team at ISRO the next year. Nishchay Mhatre, the project manager in the early years, not only presented two papers at 62nd IAC conference, he is the first Indian to win Luigi Napolitona award. The consecutive years brought great opportunities for the students to participate in various national and international conferences. Every year the team climbed a step closer to the destination.

The nano-satellite built has a volume of 1000cc, weighs one kilogram with cube dimensions being 10cm*10cm*11.35cm.

Visit by Dr. Vedachalam, Space Scientist, ISRO SWAYAM has been installed with sub systems namely, Power, Onboard Computer, Structure and thermal management, Communication and Attitude Control System. What makes the nano- satellite one of its kind in India is its Passive Attitude Control System. The satellite houses a payload capable of half duplex communication over the HAM frequency band which enables it to receive, store and transmit messages from one corner of the globe to the other.

The team was supported by eminent personalities from renowned organizations.

Constant visits, lectures and reviews by experts like Dr. Vedachalan and Dr. Madhav Dhekne from VSSC, Dr. Raghav Murthy from ISAC and Mr. Pramod Kale and Dr. Anant Patki from ISRO helped the team to pave their way to success. The students got an opportunity to explore their limits, increase their knowledge and gain wider perspectives while doing this project.

The project saw a participation of more than 250 students. Since 2009 every year new students were selected to join the

team of SWAYAM. The selection involved preliminary screening, personal interview and a small problem statement involving practical component. The selected interns were given series of presentations by the senior students about all the subsystems and work done by earlier team.

The whole project would not have been possible without the support of the faculty.

The faculty at COEP walked alongside of the team throughout the journey, providing necessary guidance and the finances. In a government aided institutions, it is rarely seen that the students have brought such credibility to the research work at academic level, as they lack resources and encouragement from the institution itself.

SWAYAM witnessed a huge participation. A break less effort that the students continued to put for 8 years has payed off really well.

The nano member of COEP, SWAYAM was launched on 22nd June 2016 by ISRO. “We weren’t expecting the project touched the lives of the students at COEP in many ways.

Priya Ganadas, a member of the founder batch says, “I had the privilege to be part

of the founding team for COEP’s Satellite Initiative. The founding team for COEP’s Satellite Initiative was group of close knit, enthusiastic like minded friends. We met each other at COEP’s Astronomy Club which I consider the very reason for existence of the satellite initiative. Knowing each other’s morale and work ethic, it was easier for us to function as a team and to collectively commit to a far in future, seemingly difficult goal - designing and building a satellite at COEP”.

It was not just an opportunity for one to explore one’s creative mind or develop innovative approach but also a chance to learn team work. Students, who hardly interacted, came together with diverse ideas and enthusiasm. The launch of SWAYAM was a thrilling experience for these young minds.

SWAYAM is a reflection of the huge potential that India harbours. The satellite speaks for the creative souls that are just looking for an opportunity to give the world something to be proud of. SWAYAM has made a history and its creators are on the way of making many more.

From The BUILDERS! An institution is indeed a place where people come together with the sole intention to gather knowledge and reproduce the knowledge in a practical form. SWAYAM is one such episode of the process from gathering to reproducing. While the brains got nurtured by knowledge, the hearts shared deep feelings of friendship, togetherness, inspiration and trust.

SWAYAM was not an easy deal for these brilliant minds.

Setbacks, stagnant moments and disappointment were as much part of the journey as the success. Many a times it took days for the students to overcome the hindrances and solve the problems at hand.

“More than once I think! There have been days in testing that nothing worked at all and we had to face disappointment. We had a strong documentation system, so if we went bad a particular step, we would go back a step and scrutinise the mistake and try to rectify it” says Umair.

Talking of the satellite, what the students admire about the satellite is the friendly, low cost nature of it. “One normally uses high conducting alloys for the antennas but what we used was a regular carpenter’s measuring tape”, chuckled the dexterous kids.

We look after the attitude determination and control. Our part involves the controlling the satellite while its up there in the space. One of our objectives was to passively stabilize the satellite and we were actually able to do it pretty well.

To our surprise, the project was a great success and the beacon could heard in different countries all over the world. USA, Argentina, Japan and many states in India could hear the beacon. This gives a sense of pride to us.

The D Day!

Our responsibility was to build the whole satellite, its configuration and orientation was set by us. We also designed the system that controls the temperature of the satellite. It was my first successful project.

It is a great pleasure working with the team.

After a wait of eight long years and real ocean boiling process, the day had finally arrived when the makers of SWAYAM gather at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota to see their success touch the sky and establish itself in the endless space. Quickening heartbeats and enormous applauds had filled the space.

“After about 45 minutes we heard the first beacon, all of us got really excited, even the seniors who had joined us for the launch”, said Manasi.

After SWAYAM , the students of COEP have geared up for a new project, CSAT2. The mission objective is to justify solar sails as an alternative means of space travel by manoeuvering from low earth orbit to a higher orbit and to collect useful scientific data during its journey.

Innovation for a Cause Technology has always been a topic of debate but when it has the potential to fight the social abnormalities; it has time and again proved to be a boon to people who know how to take the right advantage of it. A group of engineering students from IIT Delhi took an innovative step towards women safety, using the right technology.

Paras Batra along with his batchmates from IIT Delhi cofounded Leaf Wearables, and now takes care of the Sales and Marketing.

In conversation with Paras Batra, he reveals insights of the exceptionally remarkable project, SAFER.

SAFER is an initiative towards women safety. What inspired you to come up with such a product?

Could you tell us about the features of the product and the technology you have used in it?

I went to Singapore on a research scholarship in 2013 when I saw their startup culture. I saw young college students working to solve the problems of their country. Singapore is a fairly small country with much lesser problems to cater compared to India. That’s what inspired me to come back and do something of my own. Luckily my co-founders experienced the same thing during their research in USA and we were on the same page that we wanted to start a venture that solves grand challenges of India.

Unlike a lot of safety apps that are available on the play store and app store, we did not shy away from building a hardware that makes the solution feasible. It is almost impossible to take your phone out from the handbag, unlock it and then use the safety app that you never use and that too in case of a distress situation.

Are you working on making any further

That’s why we built SAFER Smart Pendant that lets you reach out for help with a double press and it is easily accessible since you are wearing it. The smart pendant is paired with the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth and pairs via SAFER by Leaf app.

In India, there were a lot of problems but our focus came on safety when I was boarding a bus from Munirka Bus Stop for my college and shared with my neighbor that I was going to move to a better place due to safety issues and he told me that Nirbhaya case happened from the same bus stop. This made me think about how nothing has changed since then and no one is trying to even do anything about it. That’s when we thought of taking up this huge challenge of solving safety issues in our country.

When and why did you think of commercializing the innovation?

Yes, SAFER started as a college project but we thought of commercializing it when we won the Gitex Technology Week in Dubai after getting tremendously positive feedback

A lot of college projects don’t come to life ever but SAFER managed to be an exception because of my great team of co-founders who turned the odds in our favor.

Cloud Based CAD, It’s Real, It’s Here!

Before a year or so it was difficult to imagine someone working in CAD software from a regular web browser like chrome or Mozilla which we use to do our usual google search. But now it has become a reality. For the first time in the history of CAD we have couple of options of fully free CAD environment. This is a great boon for hobbyists, educators, students, freelancers and startups.

It has become a fact that one can now create an account online on a specific site, as in facebook or Linkedin and start creating 3D models and designs in a browser! Nothing to install! Nothing to save! I am talking about serious mechanical design and not simple 3d models users create, so that they can 3D print it. For such needs there are tools like TinkerCAD and 123D Design from Autodesk.

To understand what this is all about please login to www.onshape.com, the world’s first cloud based professional CAD. In fact there is yet another tool called Fusion 360 from AutoDesk, the makers of AutoCAD. However this is not full cloud CAD. This has it’s advantages and disadvantages however.

Being a user of Onshape since it’s early days I can assure that this truly is a revolution that is going to take the CAD world by storm.

When I was in Japan last year for couple of months I interacted with my engineers in India through this cloud based CAD and it was a great experience to share and

collaborate online, live. One can do design reviews online; add comments, ask someone to follow our screen and so on.

Even though I have been mentioning Onshape here specifically, I am not here to promote it in any way. It’s only because it is only the true cloud CAD available as of now. Autodesk’s Fusion 360 enables you to collaborate and share, however the software needs to be installed on a PC or Mac. However full cloud CAD will work from a browser, which means it is independent of the operating system you have.

Nothing in this world is perfect, and Onshape has its limitations too. It requires a reasonable amount of internet bandwidth to operate, at least 2 Mbps.

Coming to the pricing part, Onshape comes with a price point of 100 USD per month per user for using private documents (read projects). However it is completely free to use if you can make your document public.

Public documents can be accessed by any Onshape user on the internet if they happen to find your document by searching it. Fusion 360 however offers a free option for startups and students for one year which could be extended. For the first time in the history of CAD (as far as I know) we have couple of options of fully free CAD environment. This is a great boon for hobbyists, educators, students, freelancers and startups.

To summarize, we are in a connected world now, which is going to influence the way we work, eat and sleep. Design is no exception.

Shifting Paradigms at QUARK 2017!

QUARK is an opportunity not just for engineering students but also for students at high school level, to explore lifealtering technological advancements and academia in an off-beat way through Olympiads, lectures and practical activities. Showcasing artistic talents and management skills, testing creative limits and indulgence in exciting games are some of the perks that QUARK has to offer to the student community. Following is the synopsis of the event.

Quark 2017, the annual techno-management festival of BITS Pilani, K.K. Birla Goa campus, will be held from 3rd-5th February 2017.

This year, the theme of the festival is “Shifting Paradigms”, for it embraces the changes that come with lifestyle-altering technological advances in the past few years. Quark features a wide range of events spanning across 8 different categories (Corporate, Design and Build, Elixir, Specials, Programmers Inc., Electrify, Roboficial, and Initiatives).

Apart from the 40+ events that will go on during the three days of the fest, there are 6 technical workshops as well which will be organised by giants such as NVIDIA, Mathworks and Texas Instruments.

Outside the 8 categories, there are a few other popular events that attract students and participants from all over the country such as BITSMUN, Matka (one of the largest college gaming competitions), and Cubing and for the first time a photography event, Shutter Up. In the past few months Quark has already organised several prefest events including a Codejam in November (19/11/16) which was in association with CodeChef.

Apart from that Quark made an effort to contribute to the noble cause of blood and organ donation by means of it’s social initiative RED (wherein it conducted a blood donation drive in Indore). Over the summer, Quark also organised qSAT (the Quark Scholastic Aptitude Test), an Olympiad for

school students in classes 8-12 in cities like Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Kota, Trivandrum and Lucknow.

In the months leading up to the festival, Quark invites guest lecturers from all over the world to talk to students at BITS as part of it’s TeqFLIX initiative (a telepresence lecture series). This year some of the famous speakers include Adam Cheyer (the co-founder of Siri), Subir Gokran (executive director at IMF) and Miguel Nicolelis (a pioneering neuroscientist). Quark is on track to maintain its stance as one of India’s best techno-management festivals.

Sameer Kelkar, the CEO of Grind Master Machines Pvt. Ltd, loves to venture into new horizons of Robotic Applications such as Grinding, Deflashing, Fettling, Machining and many others. With his leadership Grind Master, a pioneer and leader in special purpose machines for Metal Finishing, Deburring, NanoFinish and solutions including Robotic automation and Abrasives, has also several registered designs and technology patents (pending) in the field of microfinishing and superfinishing.

An explorer at heart, Sameer Kelkar, is a Silver Medallist and Graduate of IIT Bombay, and MS in Robotics from University of California, Berkelet. In conversation with Mart, Mr. sameer Kelkar talks about his vivid experiences, from being an engineering student to leading a successful organisation.

Do you feel engineering is perceived as a job oriented course rather than an opportunity to explore and create?

Engineering is one of the most prominent higher education subjects in India. Apart from the job opportunities it brings about, it is also sought for due to the scope for further studies abroad.

I don’t think it as easier or harder. If you talk about IIT JEE, getting into IIT was definitely harder 10 years ago, simply because there were fewer IITs.

Our education system is very competitive.

It creates a view of perceiving every course of action in terms of “scope” and “opportunity” in materialistic terms rather than inculcate the pleasure of the discipline itself. Thus most students land up perceiving engineering for its job opportunities rather than exploration and creativity.

The Startup culture in recent years has had a very positive effect on students, and I would say that the “Rat” race has actually reduced! More students are now pursuing their passion rather than set paths. I am glad that the generation that has stepped out of colleges in 2000s has a very diverse set of opportunities in front of them than earlier times.

You are a product of IIT, given that IITs are the most sought institute for engineering, how challenging was it to get into the institution and further perform to its reputation?

Cracking the IIT JEE is pretty tough. I worked very hard for 2 years to get a good rank in the entrance exam. Consistent 10-12 hours a day of study, based in Aurangabad (where good coaching was not available in 2000) was challenging but also fun. Such preparation instills a confidence, mental toughness that continues through life.

I firmly believe that one of the reasons IIT Graduates do so well later is BECAUSE of the tough preparation for getting into IIT. The underlying values of Discipline, Rigour, Detailing and most importantly withstanding high pressure situations are invaluable assets.

Performing to the reputation of IIT thus came naturally to me.

Talking about the life in IIT, students have many fantasies revolving their heads. Could you share your experience at IIT? In IIT one shares a terrific peer group of students, good environment and fairly good courses and teachers.

Though there can be improvements in terms of giving more hands-on experience, more exposure to industry and so on.

One hears lots of stories of students feeling too much pressure at the IITs. I really find that strange. Believe me the pressure to get into IIT is far more than the courses at the IIT!!

Co curricular life in campus is extremely lively, with continual sports, cultural, social events. This is as much learning as the academics.

I really enjoyed the 4 years at IIT Bombay and consider them as one of the best days of my life.

You are the second generation running the business; did you experience any difficulties dealing with the pre-established work culture of the company?

Grind Master had a dedicated sincere workforce with a passion for machine building when I joined. This was a very good platform to build on.

As a young engineer and business leader I had to earn the respect of all the team members.

I have been trying to transform the work culture into a more professional and also more fun and succeeded partially in doing so.

How long have you been associated with Grind Master? Did you begin your career at Grind Master with the post of CEO? I have been associated with Grind Master since 2010 (6 years). I joined the company as an Engineer in R&D and my first project was to develop Robotic Automation as a product and then a line of business. I then got an opportunity to head a business vertical building Special Purpose Machines and Automation solutions and further opportunities in setting up new systems and processes in the company.

Then in 2014 I got into Sales and Business Development functions. I am glad to say that I am the first ‘professional’ CEO at Grind Master since April 2016.

You seem to be really passionate about engineering and your business, any tips you would like to give our young engineers who aspire to become an entrepreneur?

With 125 millimetres diameter, this is the largest in the range and can safely guide even more cables and hoses. Rotation Speed Monitor in the 6 mm Enclosure Design Now with Restart Inhibit The SC-System’s family of signal conditioners by Pepperl+Fuchs can now be used even more comprehensively: the single rotation speed monitor with just a 6 mm installation width processes digital input signals of all binary sensors currently on the market and is now fitted with a restart inhibit.

This feature enables the module to have to be activated via a reset input after limit values have been exceeded for a short period of time so that possible faults are found and rectified before restarting.

The design of the rotation speed monitor meets the philosophy that all signals of a signal type currently on the market may be processed with just one module. Signals from NAMUR and SN sensors including line fault detection and short-circuit detection, as well as the measurement data from the 2-wire DC sensors may be processed in accordance with EN 60947-5-2.

Signals can be transferred safely in the control level from S0 sensors for measuring the water volume and from 3-wire sensors with PNP or NPN switching outputs. With its S0 interface the rotation speed monitor is also of interest for areas outside industrial automation, such as building automation.

FCON 2016: Helping Attain Sustainable Development The Indian Foundry Industries have established themselves by occupying a major position in Global economics. FCON 2016, proved to be a dais where ideas were exchanged, concerns where expressed and solutions were addressed.

The Indian Foundry industry has played a major role in contributing to the Indian Economy. It has been a big player in Government’s “Make in India” initiative by fetching huge foreign exchange in return of producing world class castings. It won’t be an exaggeration to state that the foundry industries are one of the major contributors to the growing GDP of our country. The World market has plunged into the deep pits of recession which has led to lower productivity, downfall in profit margin, higher operational costs, and lower sales.

This has proved to be a major setback for Indian foundry industry.

On 20th November, FCON a two day national conference was held at Pride Hotel, Pune in the presence of large knowledgeable audience. The event was inaugurated at the hands of Mr. Vijay Menon, Chairman & MD, Menon and Menon LTD. Kolhapur.

In his speech, he acknowledged the changing role of Foundry Industries in the global market. The rapidly changing business

structure demands effective strategies, which made him stress on the needs of an action plan for growth of Indian foundries to face severe competition and customer demands.

The Indian Foundry Industry can only flourish with a constant balance in involvement of automation and human resource.

Modernization and automation is the need of the hour for survival but training and motivation of human resource is also very important. Various industrial exhibition and seminars that are held at various parts of the world provide a great platform for training foundry men to understand and adopt latest art and technologies in manufacturing.

The event was graced by many eminent industrialists; the major attraction of the event was the keynote speech by Mr. Thomas Boon of General Motors, who has drafted CQI 27 casting system assessment for AIAG buyers. Experts from various large scale foundries and automotive companies like General Motors Ltd., Cummins India

Ltd., Neosym Ltd., and Mahindra CIE Ltd had added to the informative experience of event. The growing importance of finite elements analysis of finished components was also elaborated by the esteemed speakers.

The audience actively participated in the discussion to understand critical requirements that shall be imposed by automotive buyers in time to come. Mr.R.P Pagire of KSB Pumps Ltd., Vambori was awarded with the best worker award.

After 10 Technical Presentations and 6 Product Presentation by experts for two days the conference ended with a note to have a full day session on AIAG CQI 127.

You have been a part of this industry for a long time, what are the changes that you have seen over these years?

The automotive industry was a heavily regulated sector in the past. Consequently, there was a large waiting list and the customers lacked choice. Whatever the industry could produce was sold and the automobile OEMs did not need to modernize to survive and prosper. Similarly an average Indian Foundry in 80’s was lagging at least 30 years behind the western Industry and the gap was increasing. Today the Indian economy is well integrated with the world. The Indian OEM’s and foundry industry are now exposed to global competition. Auto OEMs are today free to source their components from anywhere in the world. Therefore, modernization and good manufacturing practices have become essential for survival. The gap between Indian and Western Foundry Industry has been largely bridged, in next 5 years the gap might be nonexistent.

How is the present economic scenario going to affect the Foundry Industry?

The Indian economy is one the fastest growing major economies in the world. With increasing investment in infrastructure, the growth rates can be December 2016

expected to increase. We are already the largest tractor market in the world, the global center for the production of small cars, and the list will keep growing. All major companies that missed the China bus would not like to miss this big Indian opportunity.

Those that were successful in China would like to repeat their success here. The demand for castings will therefore see an exponential growth. Further the Indian frugal engineering capacity is also expected to bring in sizeable export opportunities for capable domestic foundries.

How do we ensure that our foundry does well?

Control over the manufacturing processes holds the key to a world class foundry.

It is possible to produce good castings consistently with less sophisticated equipment, but it is impossible to produce good castings consistently with poor manufacturing processes. Besides manufacturing processes, establishing component design capabilities, training and development of people, establishing a continuous improvement work culture etc. will play a key role in ensuring that our casting business does well. These are the factors that will help distinguish a capable foundry from a weak one. The top management must strive to bring about

these changes in the organization.

As of today what are the threats faced by foundry industry?

The future of foundry industry appears to be extremely bright, however arbitrary changes in the regulatory environment, emotional approach to solving environment related issues etc. might pose serious threats to the industry. Training and retaining talent is also a big challenge today. Paying people well and at the same time maintaining the competitiveness of the organization is a constant battle. Keeping productivity growth rates above the salary increase rates will be a very important challenge.

What does the future hold for our Indian Foundry Industry?

The Indian automotive market is set for a quantum leap. Indian frugal engineering capability would be instrumental in putting India on the global foundry map. Foundries that will invest in modern equipment and modern processes will thrive. Those that do not modernize will have to shut down.

Companies will have to invest significant resources to develop component level design expertise. Specialization will be the name of the game. The day of the generalist is fast getting over. The future, as always, will be bright for the good and bleak for the bad. www.martupdate.com

Asian market is one of the major hubs for production and consumption of machine tools. And India stands 13th in production and 10th in consumption in the global machine tools sector. As per the latest research, India has accounted for 0.9% of the global machine tool production, with an increase of 1.1% in USD terms. The industry is performing very well, especially the automobile and auto components industry, and the push from the government through the ‘Make in India’ campaign is only taking the industry towards profitability.

Change is always inevitable, and this time it has come in the form of demonetization, which has shaken the whole country, and the machine tool industry hasn’t been spared either. However, we have to support the Government wholly, irrespective of the hassles we are facing today, for the betterment of the economy. The Prime Minister had mentioned 50 days and I am sure things will improve as days go by. Till then, the industry shall manage.
