December 2016

It’s a pleasure connecting back with you all after a brief gap. It was during one of my latest trips to Bangalore, I received the news about clearance of 150 electric buses by Board of Bangalore Metropolitan Corporation from a national daily. With this Bangalore will become the first city to have such a large fleet of Electric Buses for Public Transport in the country. Considering the time taken by public sector undertakings on changing their policies, this radical shift towards Electric Buses by BMTC was thought provoking about the future of mass transit system. During the same time, news of Ashok Leyland’s launch of ‘Circuit’ Electric Buses inspired us to research more on the development of such ideas and brings to you, our loyal readers, a feature that shows the shift in industry towards adapting the EVs. In 2014, a Chinese Manufacturer approached BMTC with the proposal of inducting Electric Buses in their fleet, and offered an Electric Bus free for trial. At that point of time, the cost of an Electric Bus was three times higher than a regular diesel bus, but the operational cost was 2.5 times lesser. Moreover the pollutionfree tag came as a huge relief to our major metros, struggling with absence of quality air and global warming. The Western countries have kick started the deed by replacing fuel vehicles with Electric ones, and in India local manufacturers like TATA, Ashok Leyland, JBM, KPIT are coming out with Electric Buses and the investment on procuring buses are going to come down. Our team has secured a detailed report about such recent developments along with the challenges the Automobile Components industry is going to witness by this paradigm shift. A proud moment for every student in this country, a group of Engineering Students from 8 different batches with their mentors, launched a nano satellite with the support ISRO, completely functional by now: Swayam by College of Engineering Pune. We take this opportunity for congratulating the entire team who were involved in this project, specially the teachers, who made a class room thought to reality with eight years of hard work. Nazia talks with the team who finally witnessed the launch at Sriharikotta and a tribute to their excellence is published in this edition, I am sure you noticed the shift we brought into the contents of MART from October issue, bringing interesting reads varied from Cutting Edge Technologies, Innovations, Fun Facts etc taking Technical Journalism to new and different perspectives. Continuing with our additions we are pleased to add our new column on “Evolution of Engineering”, penned down by one of the senior most Quality Expert in our Country, Saravjit Singh, our Fouding EAB member. We can make our edition better with your continued support and constructive criticism. Electric Vehicles: A Solution to Climate Change and Air Pollution In a world where environmental protection and energy conservation are growing concerns, the development of the Electric Vehicle has taken on accelerated pace to fulfil this needs. EVs can provide emission-free urban transportation. Tesla has boosted the awareness of the electric car in India, and the Mahindra Reva e2o can suddenly find itself in pole position in a difficult Indian market. Pune-based electric bike maker Tork Motorcycles has unveiled India’s first all-electric motorcycle recently. While we have electric cars and all-electric motorcycle, Indian commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland has launched the first ever electric bus that has been manufactured entirely in the country.

Growing concerns on air pollution Passenger vehicles are a major pollution contributor, producing significant amounts of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and other pollution. About 60 percent of carbon pollution from the transportation sector comes from passenger vehicles. The health risks of air pollution

are extremely serious. Poor air quality increases respiratory ailments like asthma and bronchitis, heightens the risk of life-threatening conditions like cancer, and burdens our health care system with substantial medical costs. Air pollution is the fifth leading cause of deaths in India. Although there have been major improvements over the past years, motor vehicles are

still a significant source of air pollution. If we electrify all of them with renewably generated, zero-carbon electricity, we will address a huge part of the climate challenge for transportation.

EV charging station is an element in an infrastructure that supplies electric energy for the recharging of EVs. Producing the electricity to power electric vehicles can generate emissions. But those emissions levels are far lower than the pollution emitted by conventional vehicles. Battery swapping stations with swappable Li-ion researchable battery packs technology make it possible for EVs to be back on the road more quickly than traditional, fossil-fuel vehicles. While battery technologies certainly introduce new safety issues that need to be considered carefully, they are not inherently any more or less safe than gasoline or diesel powered vehicles. Solar charging stations for electric vehicles

December 2016

As you know electricity comes from a variety of sources, including dirty fossil fuels, and now is the time to push for renewables to take its place. Solar charging stations for commercial use will play a major role in powering electric vehicles with renewable energy.

and engineered entirely in India. The bus is launched as a zero emission vehicle created specifically for Indian road and load conditions. Apart from zero tailpipe emissions and lower noise pollution the bus offers reduced running costs to the operator.

The combination of solar energy and electric vehicle (EV) charging is the key in drastically reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. A grid-tied solar electric system is the best way to put solar to work for EV as it will produce power whenever the sun is out.

The lithium-ion batteries are smartly placed under the floor of the bus and the bus can run up to 150 kilometres on a single recharge. The Circuit series of buses is another testament to Ashok Leyland’s commitment to leverage India’s technological innovation to deliver relevant and best-in-class solutions for India and the world. It is a big leap in mass public transport.

Electric vehicles, which emit zero emissions while driving and can be recharged using 100% renewable energy sources, are a solution to drastically reducing such emissions. Studies show EVs can also help improve air quality in cities. Electric Vehicles: Industry Adapts Manufacturing Shift Electric Vehicles have created a real buzz in the automobile manufacturing sector. The reason behind it is the alarming environmental conditions, and the development of technology to use alternative energy sources. Many countries across the globe have embraced the technology and adopted electric buses as a regular mode of transportation.

Nazia Ali nazia@martinfotech.in

In the wake of environmental degradation, the researchers in the manufacturing sector have come up with a bunch of technological advancements that have the potential to restore or deter the environmental depletion. Carbon emission being one of the prime concerns, the commercial vehicle industry has taken the initiative to counteract the problem by introducing Electric Vehicles. Electric Vehicles are designed to run on electricity rather than on petrol or diesel, ensuring minimal emission of toxic gases. The history of electric vehicle can be traced back to 1834 when Thomas Davis invented the first Electric Car that was

powered by a battery. Although, factors such as, unavailability of components and underdeveloped battery technology contributed to the decline of Electric Vehicles. Since then, EVs underwent several experiments and testing, but never reached the roads in a commercial way. Technology Development It was only after 2010, that the battery technology saw a dramatic ramped up development which enabled the Commercial Vehicle Industry to gain a momentum towards manufacturing zero emission vehicles. As a result, today we have three kinds of electric buses. Pure electric buses

City Council claims that the bus prevents the emission of 70,000 kg of carbon annually, or the equivalent of not burning 14,000 liters of diesel. Possessing revolutionary qualities, Tindo is the hope for Adelaide city to control the air quality. December 2016

16th June 2016 saw a race that was one its kind. With the challenge to cruise a distance of 25,000 kilometers, through 20 different countries located in 3 different continents with Electric buses in just 80 days returning to Barcelona, the 80e Days race was flagged. The aim of the initiative was to organise events in the key

of electric buses, we come across many significant advancements made in the vehicle. A path breaking technology was introduced with the launch of TOSA, a zero emission mass public transportation bus system by ABB Secheron of ABB Group. The bus installed with lithium-titanate batteries ensures minimum use of raw material throughout the life cycle. The USP of the vehicle is the charging technology used in the bus. ABB has deployed 13 flash-charging technology which takes less than a second to connect to the bus, charging the battery partially in just 15 seconds. A further 4 to 5 minutes charge at the terminus at the end of the line completes the whole charging process. Solar energy has also acted as an excellent alternative source. In 2007, Tindo, world’s first solar electric bus was launched in Adelaide, Australia. The 11 Zebra module batteries of the bus are recharged by Photovoltaic System installed at the bus

Speculating the current scenario, one can anticipate that the conventional transit buses will soon be replaced by the more efficient, economic and eco friendly electric buses. Countries like USA, Africa, Germany, Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, China, UK and many more have adopted electric buses as their regular transit buses. Electric Vehicles in India Founded as a joint venture between Maini Group from Bangalore and AEV LLC of USA in 1994, Reva rolled in as the first Electric Vehicle in the country. Fully automatic – no gear, no clutch technology and small size made it easy to drive. It could be charged 100 percent in 7 hours and gave a range of 48 miles. The car was well received and saw a surge in sales during 2005 due to hike in the petrol prices. However, the electric vehicles did not catch on that well in the Indian market. The bygone couple of years saw emergence of many electric vehicles by Indian firms. Inching towards adopting new technology and establishing a healthier and pollution free environment to live in, many major players in the automobile industry have launched Electric Vehicles. Manufacturing giants like Tata, Ashok Leyland and Mahindra Reva have launched Electric Vehicles. “Indian Component Manufacters should Adapt Newer Technologies for EVs” Dr. Seshu Bhagavathula, Chief Technology officer, Ashok Leyland Limited, pursued his Masters in Physics and Electronics at IIT Bombay, India and University of Stuttgart, Germany, and went on to finish his Ph.D., in High Frequency Technology for space applications at the University of Stuttgart. While conversing with MART, Mr. Bhagavathula reveals the technical details of Ashok Leyland’s new launch ‘Circuit’ and enlightens us about the viability of the bus in India.

Seshu Bhagavathula Chief Technology officer, Ashok Leyland Limited Ashok Leyland’s entry into Electric Bus Market shows its commitment towards clean environment and venturing into the future business. Can you share how this project got conceived?

knowledge that we had to develop an indigenous product.

Traditionally, Ashok Leyland has had a history of firsts in the commercial vehicle industry. We have always looked at the future and had products / platforms that would meet the future requirements of the nation. In the mobility business, we can truly claim to be pioneers with having brought the first power steering in commercial vehicles. In a history of many firsts where we have constantly innovated and kept ourselves ahead of the curve, we were also the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to take the initiative for a cleaner and greener environment. To fulfill these, we came up with India’s first CNG Bus in 1997, India’s first Hybrid Electric Bus in 2002, India’s first CNG Hybrid Plug-in Bus in 2010. While the country is looking at moving to Euro 6 in 2020, Ashok Leyland has already showcased capability in Euro 6 technology and engine in Auto Expo 2016.

While we had the technology with us, the import of such technology was highly prohibitive. This was a great challenge. Also, the fact that the technology existing abroad will not and cannot be used in Indian conditions. It required engineering of a different kind to adapt the vehicle to Indian road and load conditions. These were the challenges that had to be addressed while developing an electric vehicle suited for India.

In continuation to our commitment to quality, better, clean and green technology, we have re-invented ourselves by indigenously developing India’s first Electric Bus. We launched the Electric bus in India in the year 2014 by bringing in technology from our subsidiary company in UK, Optare. However, since the import costs were very high and the need for green technology imminent, we decided to leverage the December 2016

What were the challenges faced from prototype to the launch of the Electric Bus?

Could you explain the major technological shift in comparison to manufacturing with traditional fuel Bus? Besides the interdisciplinary nature of the drive train & energy storage aggregates, the quantum of electronics and the lines of software code has increased multifold. The need of hour is to upskill dealers and technicians in the knowhow, handling and servicing of these components. Could you talk about the indigenous technology used and your major partners in this project? Optare, the bus manufacturing company in UK that we own is our technological partner. While we had the knowledge within the company, we had to leverage it to use it for Indian road and load conditions.

How the industry will adapt the technological change including the component Manufacturers? While the technology and vehicle has been indigenously developed, the batteries still need to be imported from US. This keeps the costs high. Hence, there is a need for Indian component manufacturers to adapt and bring in newer technology that will make these buses more affordable to fleet operators. Will the electric buses be viable considering the poor infrastructure conditions in Urban as well as rural India? Circuit series electric bus has been particularly designed to suit Indian road and load conditions – be it urban, semi-urban or rural. It has been tested to handle uneven terrain or hilly terrain as well. What are the future innovations we can expect from Ashok Leyland to bring more efficiency into the electric bus to make it more India Centric? Circuit series of buses will be brought out in other platforms and variants as well to suit all type of applications and requirements. What are the user centric features of the bus? USB charging, camera, GPS, passenger information system, stop request switch, onboard WiFiare some of the customer centric features available in the electric bus. www.martupdate.com

COVER STORY

“One must have the Ability to have Vehicles which are Differently Fuelled”

Mr. T Venkatraman, Senior Vice President, Global Buses, Ashok Leyland Limited, is a Mechanical Engineer from REC, Kurukshetra. With over 30 years of rich and varied experience in the automotive industry, including stints overseas. In conversation with Mr. T. Venkatraman, he talks about Ashok Leyland’s new venture ‘Circuit’, its market strategies, expansion plans, its future in India and much more.

T Venkatraman Senior Vice President, Global Buses, Ashok Leyland Limited

As one of the largest providers of buses in the world Ashok Leyland would help India move up the path of “efficient, comfortable, responsible and sustainable urban transport. What are your plans to popularise this mode of transport among masses? India is a landlocked country. The infrastructure for setting up bus transportation is the lowest amongst any mode of transport. Compared to any other mode of transport, this is also the fastest. There are many success stories of BRTS. One must have the ability to have vehicles which are differently fuelled, different entries like entry+1, entry+2, etc., front engine and rear engine, FOH door, BRTS applications, and emergency doors related to various RTOs. Ashok Leyland has a product portfolio which encompasses everything and we can meet customer’s requirements with respect to that particular

region. This is also how we will continue to engage with both private players, Public Private Partnerships, and STUs. Any scheme that the Government leverages, whether it be MOUD, MORTH, Make in India, we will engage with the Government to make such schemes possible. As everyone is aware, we have Electric vehicle, Hybrid vehicle, Diesel vehicle and the complete gamut of product portfolio. We are first in the country to launch a Double Decker Bus, Vestibule Bus, CNG Bus, Hybrid Electric Bus, CNG Hybrid Plug-in Bus, World’s first front engine fully flat floor bus, India’s first rollover compliant bus, and indigenous Electric Bus. We have always had the user or the stakeholder’s requirement as our primary objective to come up with new product portfolio / platforms.

Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has an ambitious plan to operate all state-run buses on electricity. He said the move will not only reduce pollution but also help cut fares by 50%. So, for a cost conscious country like India, would you entitle Electric Buses as a more economic solution than the regular buses running on petrol or diesel or even CNG? The Government of India has an ambitious plan to operate all state-run buses on electric platform. This is also in consonance with the Paris Summit 2016 which is promoting a greener environment globally, where our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had also signed and committed to India being a part of a positive impact on climate change. Apart from the above, the Make in India is a programme that is close to the Prime

Minister’s heart. Our Circuit series of buses are clean, green technology, made in India for India. Under the FAME scheme, the Government provides subsidy to electric vehicles and we are currently showcasing the Circuit series of buses to all STUs. What is your strategy for the domestic market? Are you looking into the global market for electric bus? The DHI has come out with the scheme which is aimed at faster adaptation of mobility for electric vehicles. There are subsidies available. In line with those subsidies, we will endeavour to work with customers, make vehicles in India and ensure that these vehicles are available relevant to applications. Hilly terrain will need a 900mm application, primary metros will require lower floor buses. So, we will try to encompass and build December 2016

an electric vehicle which is efficient for that particular application. We already have electric bus which are being made in Optare. These vehicles are being sold in London. Depending on the evolution of the business world-wide, whether we make the vehicles in India and sell in some other parts of the world, or whether we make it in England, Ashok Leyland has the ability to build and feed the global market needs. which all platforms will this service be available? The Electric Vehicle will be used for relevant applications, such as Tarmac, Inter-Compound applications like IT companies, Staff Transport, Intra-City, and specific corridors like heritage sites, etc. For making this project a major manufacturing success, the major order should come from the State Run Transport Corporations. What is your approach and strategy? DHI has stated that on a firstcome-first-serve basis they will subsidise protos that are sought by various STUs. Depending on the hunger of the STUs and the STUs needing to become the first user, these protos will be

developed accordingly. Also, as stated earlier, depending on the terrain, application, and distance of travel, the nature of the vehicle will be decided.

Electric Vehicle: Consumer’s Mindset & Perception Biggest Challenge India is venturing a slow but steady growth in the development of Electric Vehicles. Electric cars and electric buses have already made a space on the Indian roads and now, India is likely to get its first Electric Motorcycle in the form of TORK. In a chat with Mr. Kapil Shelke, a mechanical engineer, an innovator, a visionary and an inspiring leader we bring to you the details of his newest brainchild. Kapil Shelke Founder & Director, Tork Motors Pvt Ltd

TORK has built India’s first Electric Motorcycle. What inspired you to opt for electric motorcycle instead of gasoline motorcycle? It started as a college project in 2009 when the founding team of Tork Motors wanted to make the world’s fastest electric motorcycle. However, the team eventually realized it would be a very expensive proposition and focused towards building not only India’s first but the fastest as well. EVs are trending in due to the alarming environmental conditions. But considering the source of electricity (coal being the

major source in India) used to power the batteries, the environmental conditions remain unchanged. Would you say Electric Vehicles are an effective solution to fight environmental issues? – Electric vehicle is a smart solution for individual transportation in a city due to hassle free driving, low NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness) value, no smoke and very low maintenance. Also low running cost is the added benefit. We at Tork Motors do not promote this platform as a complete solution, but definitely a much better option in the face of rising environmental concerns.

India is still at a nascent stage when it comes to electric vehicles and the technology used in them. How do you see the future of Electric Vehicles in India to be? India is at a nascent stage only as far as adoption of EVs is concerned. The country has adequate technology to produce smart EVs. The biggest challenge with this is a consumer’s mindset and perception towards what an electric vehicle can actually deliver when compared to their conventional counterparts. However more and more awareness is building owing to the government’s push to encourage acceptance of this platform and confidence in the Indian

market shown by biggies like Tesla. The shift from petrol to EV is slowly but surely happening in the market due to the desire of a hassle free daily driving and commuting which only EVs provide. The future of EVs in India is likely to be slow adoption to becoming a daily necessity. Having said that, the future is definitely electric and it holds a lot of potential. The EV industry is facing problems disposing the battery wastes. Even recycling of the battery is not financially sound. For example if we recycle Lithium batteries, the extraction of lithium turns out to be more expensive than mining new lithium. Does TORK have any strategies to deal with the challenge? Tork works with reputed and trusted brand partners for the supply of battery cells who are capable of solving battery supply issues. We purely focus on our product and making sure that it is the best value proposition for our patrons. Is it an indigenous product or did you have to import any technologies in order to get desired results? The Tork T6X, our first commercial offering

for the Indian market, featuring proprietary technology has been indigenously designed, developed and built ground up here in India. The only imported components used in this product are battery cells and controller. TORK Motorcycle is going to be “On-Road”. How was your experience with vendor development? The challenges you faced in developing the critical components? – Tork Motorcycle’s UPS is a fantastic integration of all available parts. This has enabled us to drastically cut down on the vendor development time and thereby the costs involved in it. The number of two-wheelers plying on Indian roads is far more than number than four-wheelers. That means people in India invest more in bikes. How you are planning to tap this huge market with affordable range of pricing? An electric motorcycle in itself provides fantastic driving pleasure because of no noise, no smoke, no gear changes and no vibrations. Further, low running cost and low maintenance add more benefit to owning an EV. T6X offers features such as Touch screen TFT display, helmet storage,

cloud connectivity, mobile charging superior acceleration. It will connect with customer’s mobile device through Tork’s app to communicate its health, range, service alerts and customised riding profiles. Apart from these, the T6X boasts of a range of advanced safety features like ABS, CDS, anti-theft, geo fencing and daytime running lamp (DRL) among others. We at Tork have furthered our state-of-the-art electric motorcycle technology with the signature TIROS (Tork Intuitive Response Operating System), the intelligence that will power the T6X. Apart from analysis and compilation of data for every ride, power management, real time power consumption and range forecasts, TIROS also likes to learn how you ride. MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE

Managing Inventory for Better Operational Efficiency Inventory in manufacturing or production unit has both advantages and disadvantages for different departments. While Inventory has been shown as a burden on OPEX due to maintenance cost by some, some attribute virtues to Inventory as it offers better customer service by variety of choices, availability and low handling cost etc. While the excess or shortage of Inventory has definitely negative impact on business, a proper management of it can help in operational efficiency and better customer service

various ways to control inventory.

Inventory is an idle resource which has some economic value. It could be waiting for future transformation or sale. It is considered as current asset in balance sheet. Out of typical manufacturing wastes, Inventory is one of the important ones. Inventory can cover all inefficiencies in the system and is one of the key areas to improve operational efficiency. One of the focuses of lean management is to reduce the inventory for operational issues to get exposed. The focus of this article is to look at pros and cons of having inventory, challenges of inventory management, conflicts to be managed and

What is Inventory Management? Inventory is a necessary evil. Ideally zero inventory is the best. But this will lead to increase of lead time which in turn will affect the customer service. So, some inventory is required. Question is how much? Inventory Management is about managing the level by considering cost of holding the inventory and customer service. It is a trade-off and both these requirements should be balanced.

Inventory. One argues on why is it required where others take a stand on why is it not required. Let us look at both the arguments. Why Inventory is required? • It will improve customer service. Customer can be responded with a very short notice and Customer has the choice when many varieties are kept as Inventory • Ordering costs can be reduced in

The finance department wants inventory to be low at it helps in reducing need for more working capital and reduction of many other overhead costs. reduce this • Business loss because of stock-out situation can be avoided • By buying in bulk, purchase, transport and handling costs can be reduced • Production system can run effectively by continuous availability of the material • In some situations, customer may be satisfied by demonstrating physical Inventory • To overcome capacity bottleneck at peak demand, Inventory can be stocked before • Inventory may be kept as against upcoming price increase or inflation • If lead time is more than customer order fulfilling time, Inventory is needed • When demand is fluctuating, inventory is kept at higher level • Inventory is maintained for smoothening the operation Why Inventory is not required? • Working capital is blocked which otherwise would have been used for a better purpose. Borrowing money for this is expensive. It is called Inventory carrying cost • Cost because of likely obsolescence of the Inventory when the product is no more required • Possible theft of the inventory and to avoid this, cost of security • Cost of co-ordination for safeguarding the inventory including cost of accounting and counting December 2016

• Insurance cost of the Inventory • Cost of maintenance of inventory including space and protection • Blockage of opportunity because money is blocked in Inventory Conflicts in Inventory Management In a manufacturing set up, different functions have different targets or objectives as far as level of Inventory is concerned. The marketing or sales department wants Inventory to be as high as possible with all possible varieties to serve his Customers better. Production department also prefers a high level of Inventory as it helps in reduction of setup change frequency, for Economic order of Production (EoP) and better machine utilization. On the other hand, finance department wants inventory to be low at it helps in reducing need for more working capital and reduction of many other overhead costs. Purchase and procurement department favors more inventories to reduce transportation costs and better negotiation with Suppliers through bulk purchase. Inventory management is about managing these conflicts to optimize costs, not sacrificing customer service. Link of Inventory to type of demands Basically, there are two types of demands for the products in a manufacturing set up, namely dependent demand and independent demand. In dependent case, demand for the product of the company is dependent on another product. For example, if a company is manufacturing crank shafts for a specific car model, demand of crankshafts can be correlated to demand of cars. Since OEMs can predict demand

with reasonable accuracy, planning demand and inventory prediction by the company is relatively easier. On the other hand, if the company is manufacturing a product which has no link to demand of other products, then forecast and maintaining inventory is a challenge. Example for independent demand product could be cycle pumps. Inventory reduction exposes problems As told earlier, inventory maintained more than what is required will suppress many operational issues in the system. By reducing, it will expose following problems• Poor planning • Quality issues • Poor co-ordination • Overtime • Supplier issues • Machine maintenance issues • More reaction time It is like bringing water level where ship sails. With lowered water, ship will hit at rocks. Water level can be linked to Inventory and rocks are like operational issues. The picture here makes this point more clear The author, P S Satish heads Saraswati Industrial Service. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning As the world encounters a rapid growth in data and devices, Rajesh Angadi in his following article, enlightens us about the role of IOT and Artificial Intelligence in our day to day life.

Rajesh Angadi rajeshangadi2013@gmail.com

As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues its run as one of the most popular technology buzzwords of the year, the discussion has turned from what it is, to how to drive value from it, to the tactical: how to make it work. Internet of things (IoT) will produce a treasure trove of big data – data that can help cities predict accidents and crimes, give doctors real-time insight into information from pacemakers or biochips, enable optimised productivity across industries through predictive maintenance on equipment and machinery, create truly smart homes with connected appliances and provide critical communication between self-driving cars. IoT data is most valuable to us when it can immediately inform action. That means that data must be analysed immediately and accurately to maintain a continuous flow of information and feedback within the enterprise and its connected devices. The possibilities that IoT brings to the table are endless. As the rapid expansion of devices and sensors connected to the Internet of Things continues, the sheer volume of data being created by them will increase to a mind-boggling level. This data will hold extremely valuable insight into what’s working well or what’s not – pointing out conflicts that arise and providing high-value insight into new business risks and opportunities as correlations and associations are made

38

www.martupdate.com

Internet of things (IoT), is the internetworking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as “connected devices” and “smart devices”), buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. It is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-tohuman or human-to-computer interaction. IoT allows objects to be sensed and/or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit. When IoT is augmented with sensors and actuators, the technology becomes an instance of the more general class of cyber-physical systems, which also encompasses technologies such as smart grids, smart homes, intelligent transportation and smart cities. IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microservices and the internet. The convergence has helped tear down the silo

walls between Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT), allowing unstructured machine-generated data to be analyzed for insights that will drive improvements. IoT links smart objects to the Internet. It can enable an exchange of data never available before, and bring users information in a more secure way. Companies like Cisco estimates the IoT will consist of 50 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2020. Gain deeper insight with analytics using our IoT System to enhance productivity, create new business models, and generate new revenue streams. This sounds great. However, the big problem will be finding ways to analyze the deluge of performance data and information that all these devices create. If you’ve ever tried to find insight in terabytes of machine data, you know how hard this can be. It’s simply impossible for humans to review and understand all of this data – and doing so with traditional methods, even if you cut down the sample size, simply takes too much time. We need to improve the speed and accuracy of big data analysis in order for IoT to live up to its promise. The only way to keep up with this IoT-generated data and gain the hidden insight it holds is with machine learning. In this situation, machine learning can help companies take the billions of data points they have and boil December 2016

them down to what’s really meaningful. The general premise is the same as in the retail applications – review and analyze the data companies have collected to find patterns or similarities that can be learned from, so that better decisions can be made. The realization of IoT depends on being able to gain the insights hidden in the vast and growing seas of data available. Since current approaches don’t scale to IoT volumes, the future realization of IoT’s promise is dependent on machine learning to find the patterns, correlations and anomalies that have the potential of enabling improvements in almost every facet of our daily lives. The Internet of Things (IoT) is still in its infancy because of the limited capability of its embedded processor. In the meantime, research on artificial intelligence (AI) has made plenty of progress. The application of AI to IoT will significantly increase the capabilities of IoT, and this will benefit both economic and social development. In this chapter, the elementary concepts and key technologies of AI are explained, and the model and principle of intelligent IoT, resulting from the integration of AI and IoT are discussed. There are two main motivations for expanding the Internet to the Internet of Things (IoT). The first motivation is to expand the amount of information shared by databases and objects in the real world. The second motivation is to enable users not only to share information but also control objects in the real world. These make IoT much more attractive in society. In other words, IoT is a good advancement of the conventional Internet. It’s time to let the machines point out where the opportunities truly are which leads us to “Artificial Intelligence”. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to December 2016

help address some of the biggest challenges that society faces. Smart vehicles may save hundreds of thousands of lives every year worldwide, and increase mobility for the elderly and those with disabilities. Smart buildings may save energy and reduce carbon emissions. Precision medicine may extend life and increase quality of life. Smarter government may serve citizens more quickly and precisely, better protect those at risk, and save money. AI-enhanced education may help teachers give every child an education that opens doors to a secure and fulfilling life. These are just a few of the potential benefits if the technology is developed with an eye to its benefits and with careful consideration of its risks and challenges. AI holds the potential to be a major driver of economic growth and social progress, if industry, civil society, government, and the public work together to support development of the technology with thoughtful attention to its potential and to managing its risks.

are removed from the definition. For example, optical character recognition is no longer perceived as an exemplar of “artificial intelligence” having become a routine technology. Capabilities still classified as AI include advanced Chess and Go systems and self-driving cars.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

•Planning

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that emphasises the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans. Some of the activities computers with artificial intelligence are designed for include:

•Problem solving

Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence exhibited by machines. In computer science, an ideal “intelligent” machine is a flexible rational agent that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal. Colloquially, the term “artificial intelligence” is applied when a machine mimics “cognitive” functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as “learning” and “problem solving”. As machines become increasingly capable, facilities once thought to require intelligence

According to the father of Artificial Intelligence, John McCarthy, it is “The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs”. Artificial Intelligence is a way of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently, in the similar manner the intelligent humans think. AI research is further divided into subfields that focus on specific problems or on specific approaches or on the use of a particular tool or towards satisfying particular applications. •Speech recognition •Learning

The central problems (or goals) of AI research include reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, natural language processing (communication), perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects. Artificial Intelligence Technologies In the AI area, these processes have manifested themselves in a number of wellrecognized and maturing areas including Neural Networks, Expert Systems, Automatic Speech Recognition, Genetic Algorithms, Intelligent Agents, Natural Language Processing, Robotics, Logic Programming, and Fuzzy Logic. Each of these areas will be examined in some depth here, but it is first important to understand that www.martupdate.com

39

the importance of these individual areas has changed over the last two decades. These changes have been based upon the progress in each area, and the needs that each area meets. For example in the early 1980’s robotics was a large thrust in artificial intelligence. At that time benefits could be seen in manufacturing applications. In the late 1990’s the blossoming of the Internet pushed the importance of intelligent agents forward for performing routine tasks and complex searches. At the same time, throughout the 1980s and 1990s, orders of magnitude advances in computer processing power have allowed hurdles in speech recognition and image processing to be overcome. The maturity of each of these technology areas also differs. Expert Systems and Automatic Speech Recognition are among the most mature while Natural Language Processing and Intelligent Agents remain in early stages of development. Machine learning is one of the most important technical approaches to AI and the basis of many recent advances and commercial applications of AI. Modern machine learning is a statistical process that starts with a body of data and tries to derive a rule or procedure that explains the data or can predict future data. This approach— learning from data—contrasts with the older “expert system” approach to AI, in which programmers sit down with human domain experts to learn the rules and criteria used to make decisions, and translate those rules into software code. An expert system aims to emulate the principles used by human experts, whereas machine learning relies on statistical methods to find a decision procedure that works well in practice. An advantage of machine learning is that it can be used even in cases where it is

infeasible or difficult to write down explicit rules to solve a problem. For example, a company that runs an online service might use machine learning to detect user log-in attempts that are fraudulent. The company might start with a large data set of past login attempts, with each attempt labeled as fraudulent or not using the benefit of hindsight. Based on this data set, the company could use machine learning to derive a rule to apply to future login attempts that predicts which attempts are more likely to be fraudulent and should be subjected to extra security measures. In a sense, machine learning is not an algorithm for solving a specific problem, but rather a more general approach to finding solutions for many different problems, given data about them. Deep learning is a branch of machine learning based on a set of algorithms that attempt to model high-level abstractions in data by using multiple processing layers, with complex structures or otherwise, composed of multiple non-linear transformations. Deep learning is part of a broader family of machine learning methods based on learning representations of data. Deep learning is just another name for artificial neural networks (ANN for short) but in a more refined and easier avatar. They have been existing for more than 40 years. Finding connections between variables and packaging them into a new single variable is called feature engineering. while Deep learning is automated feature engineering. Artificial neural networks are generally presented as systems of interconnected “neurons” which exchange messages between each other. The connections have numeric weights which can be tuned based on experience, making neural nets adaptive to inputs as well as capable of learning.

Now it is common to have neural networks with 10+ layers and even 100+ layer ANNs can be tried upon. We can essentially stack layers of neurons on top of each other. The lowest layer takes raw data like images, text, sound, etc. and then each neurons stores some information about the data they encounter. Each neuron in the layer sends information up to the next layers of neurons which learn a more abstract version of the data below it. So the higher you go up, the more abstract features we can learn. In deep learning, ANNs are automatically extracting features instead of manual extraction in feature engineering. While giving image as an input and hand compute features like distribution of colors, image histograms, distinct color count, we can feed the raw images to ANN. ANNs have already proved their worth in handling images, also being applied to all kinds of other datasets like raw text, numbers etc. This will help the data scientist to concentrate more on building deep learning algorithms. Various deep learning architectures such as deep neural networks, convolutional deep neural networks, deep belief networks and recurrent neural networks have been applied to fields like computer vision, automatic speech recognition, natural language processing, audio recognition and bioinformatics where they have been shown to produce state-ofthe-art results on various tasks. Rajesh Angadi completed his BE, MBA, PMP and is Hadoop Certified. With 22 years of Information Technology experience he worked on projects for Unisys, Intel, Satyam, Microsoft, Ford, Hartford, Compaq, and Princeton.

IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), microservices and the internet. The convergence has helped tear down the silo walls between Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT), allowing unstructured machine-generated data to be analyzed for insights that will drive improvements.

Work-Life Balance through Planning and Prioritization With expanding economic activities and employment through new economic sectors over the years, quantity of work and pressure have increased, taking a toll on the quality of life. Work-life balance, or the lack of it, is a key issue for employees and organisations across the world. Some basic methods to maintain this ‘Work-life balance’ can help an employee lead an efficient and productive life at both home and work, thereby benefitting his relations and family as well his organisation.

Eco-friendly Transportation for Colleagues Tesco’s CSR work is run on the backbone of colleague volunteering – be it tree planting drives or engaging the community with projects like solar lights. Their ground-up, colleague-led approach puts the focus on the human contribution and gets a significant chunk of our colleague population involved in our CSR as active participants. Here are a few initiatives by Tesco Bengaluru: Eco-friendly transportation for colleagues: Tesco Bengaluru becomes first corporate to adopt an eco-friendly transportation mode for their colleagues. In association with Lithium Urban Technologies they inducted an electric car fleet for colleague transportation. Lithium Urban Technologies are pioneers in sustainable urban transportation that uses smart cars powered by technology. Tesco Bengaluru’s sustainability effort collaborates and creates a wider ecosystem involving colleagues, corporates, NGOs and government bodies. They replaced all our diesel small car fleet with 40+ emission free Mahindra Reva E20 electric cars in 2015. Their pioneering effort aimed to reduce their carbon footprint and create a positive impact on the environment. This is backed by the required Fast Charging infrastructure at Tesco Bengaluru premises. They also benefit from Lithium’s ‘Assurance Stack’ that ensures safety of our colleagues, transparency of

operations and productivity of the fleet. Vehicles can be tracked 24/7 both at Tesco’s transport operations centre and at Lithium’s Network Operating Centre. Aligned with the existing environment-friendly policies, this initiative is aimed at making travel for Tesco colleagues easier and more convenient. Besides zero emission, these electric cars have lower running costs when compared to traditional counterparts. The full value chain is also green as Tesco Bengaluru draws over 50% of its power from hydropower sources, a part of their larger sustainability campaign. a) Solar lights for the communities: Tesco Bengaluru partnered with the local communities and their volunteers discovered the need for street lighting in and around the adopted school at Whitefield. They felt it important to provide a sustainable lighting system so that residents were able to go about their day-today activities with sufficient lighting. Having identified these areas, Tesco Bengaluru came forward to drive this initiative and contribute funds under its CSR programme to light up these locations in Whitefield. The volunteering team at Tesco Bengaluru identified a few locations that were in need of basic lighting. Their team had visited the Nallurahalli village for a tree plantation initiative and Gandhipuram for a street cleaning drive. During these projects, the team identified a dearth of basic lighting; also electric poles weren’t erected in these

areas. Through initial interactions with the community, villagers expressed concerns about unlit roads at night making it difficult for them to go about their lives safely. To bridge this gap, Tesco Bengaluru installed 19 solar lights in public and learning spaces at the Gandhipuram and Nallurahalli villages. b) Building awareness around key events and milestones: Around World Environment Day on 5th June, the team organised a ‘Back To School’ volunteering event at a government school, part of Tesco Bengaluru’s CSR School Adoption Model. They engaged the children in activities themed around World Environment Day, encouraging them to reuse plastic and use waster creatively. The children took part in an art competition on environment-related topics, made paper bags and created fun toys and pen stands with used plastic bottles. c) Afforestation drives: Tesco’s tree plantation drives, in partnership with ‘Say Trees’, an organisation for nature lovers, aims to revive the city’s shrinking green cover by planting saplings in areas that are barren and devoid of greenery. Drives were conducted in different parts of Bengaluru from Whitefield to Koramangala and we planted over 6500 saplings in the city. By partnering with relevant stakeholders we believe we can improve Bengaluru’s green cover and quality of life for its citizens.

Say YES to Sustainable MSMEs in India The micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector plays a vital role in India’s economy. It contributes to 40% of India’s GDP and accounts for a workforce of 117 million. YES BANK, in FY 2014-15, launched ‘Say YES to Sustainable MSMEs in India’ a first of its kind CSR initiative, to promote environmental sustainability (through Energy Efficiency) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) within the Indian MSME sector. This program was launched to help MSMEs increase their energy efficiency (EE), enhance resource efficiency and positively contribute to emission reduction. Through the interventions YES BANK has taken actions to address the growing issue of climate change and promote responsible consumption of resources thereby aligning the project with the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Under the initiative, in FY 2015-16, energy efficiency projects were implemented in 71 MSME units, improving their energy efficiency in the range of 15-20% and resulting in total savings of over Rs. 2.2 Crore. The project resulted in a reduction of more than 6,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per annum. Additionally, 275 MSMEs also benefited from energy efficiency sensitization workshops.

The project, in its first year was implemented in three locations and in the second year was scaled up to 9 states covering 18 locations. Now in its third phase, the project is being implemented in 11 states covering more than 12 MSME sectors including Foundry, Dyeing, Rubber, Plastic, General Engineering, Textile, Rice Mills, Auto ancillaries, Sports goods and Handicrafts. ‘Say YES to Sustainable MSMEs in India’, was formally featured as part of the India GHG Program (an industry-led, voluntary framework to measure and manage GHG emissions in India) at COP22 in Marrakesh to show-case how India is facilitating an active, constructive and positive environment for ambitious climate action. The aim is to make ‘Say YES to Sustainable MSMEs in India’ a one-stop-solution for EE and OHS requirements of MSMEs in India, enhancing overall performance levels while achieving lower carbon emissions. Cairn takes a step towards Clean and Healthy India Cairn takes a step towards clean and healthy India In what seems to be one of the biggest sanitation and health intervention, Cairn India. In partnership with Rural Development Organization (RDO) & Zilla Parishad under governments Swachh Bharat Abhiyan constructed 20,000 toilets in Barmer District, Rajasthan. Statistics show that the district has more than 90% people practicing open defecation in rural areas and 85% overall December 2016

(as opposed to the average of 50 percent in India) as a whole, which makes the district fall under one of worst socio-economic indicators of the country. The target was to built 20,000 household toilets and educate people about the need of better sanitation and health conditions. The first phase of the project till mid 2016 saw as many as 7000 toilets being constructed. The utilization of the toilets rose over to around 40%, much higher than any other part of the country. After an internal review, Cairn recommended

additions and amendments in the strategy like provision for adequate water, additional bathrooms, focusing on smaller geographical area, construction of toilets in schools and encouraging children to endorse the cause, motivating families etc. The drive has reflected a positive effect with families, local leaders and citizens showing support and helping in endorsing the cause. Evolution of Engineering

The Stone Age Our ancestors started crafting stone tools 3.3 million years ago. What distinguishes us from other species is our capability for making sophisticated tools. Starting with this issue, MART will feature a regular column, “Evolution of Engineering”. Our objective is to trace engineering evolution from pre-history to the present andthis is shaping the future.

Saravjit Singh Saravjit.singh@gmail.com

Engineering is defined as the application of science and technology to the design, build and use of various types of machines, structures, and engines. This concept is picturized in Figure 1.

is an apparatus consisting of interrelated parts with separate functions, and is used for doing work. It is understandable that our ancestors first made and used tools. Machines were developed much later.

Engineers acquire knowledge and use this to design, develop, innovate and use materials, machines, structures, systems and processes forcreating products that serve specific purposes.

The ability to design and use toolsdistinguishes us from all other species. This skill has given direction and pace of change to our lives. The broader history of civilization is also the history of innovation and engineering. Our historical progress can beseen in terms of ages: Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Steam Age and Information Age. These ages relate to the way engineering and innovation has shaped our interactions with the world.

Tools and Machines Charles Babbage said, “The difference between a tool and a machine is not capable of very precise distinction; nor is it necessary, in a popular explanation of those terms, to limit very strictly their acceptation.” Simply put, tools are used independently to transform the shape of any material or for other purposes. Whereas, a machine

In this article, we will focus on the Stone Age. A Stone Age civilization uses stone tools, as well as tools used by their predecessors i.e. tools made from the remains of animals and plants.

Till as recent as 10,000 BC, humans lived in the stone age. Metal tools were unknown. Remarkably, since being developed 3.3 million years ago, there were only small innovation in the construction of stone tools till 40,000 BC. Tools made from remains of flora, fauna and stoneare still being used. The difference is that we now use tools made of many other natural and man-made materials. First Two Stone Tool Developments Mode I: Oldawan Industry In 2011, anthropologists unearthed 3.3 million years old stone tools nearLake Turkana in Kenya. These tools are tagged as “Lomekwi 3”. Due to copyright restrictions, we cannot show these tools. However, these stone toolscan be seen at the link http:// africanfossils.org/search

Figure 2: Mode IOldowan Industry Chopping Tool

Figure 3. Mode II: Acheulean Industry Hand Axe These tools include sharp flakes of stone, sheared off from larger rocks. Hammers and anvils were also excavated, some of which were huge. The largest tool unearthed hereweighs 15kg. It is an anvil – a toolmaker’s tool. Cobbles selected to make tools were flaked by striking against this large tool. 2.6 million years old tools have also beendiscovered in Gona, Ethiopia. Largest findof similar age tools has been in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Tools from both sites are like those found near Lake Turkana. All these tools are collectively known as Oldowan tools. These tools are of simple construction, mostly using core forms, made from river pebbles; pebblies being struck by a spherical hammer-stone to cause fractures removing flakes from one surface, creating an edge and often a sharp tip. One exampleis shown in figure 2. Blunt end of a stone tool is called the proximal surface and the sharp end is the distal. When using the tool, the hominid held the proximal surface and brought the distal surface down hard on an object he wished to detach or shatter. Mode II: Acheulean Industry

Mode IIstone tools, found in France, date back 1.7 million years. An example of these more sophisticated tools is the hand axe shown in Figure 3. Earliest stone tool makers Kenyanthropusplatyops, wholived near the Kenyan site where the Lomekwi 3 tools were excavated, and Australopithecus afarensis, known from the famous fossil ‘Lucy’, are both likely candidates for being the first stone tool makers. Both these species had a mixture of human and ape-like features, with relatively small brains. However, they certainly had intelligence, cognition and manipulative abilities required to make stone tools. In fact, their tool making techniques and resultant tools remained practically unchanged till 10,000 BC. This is despite us, the more intelligentHomo sapiens, having emerged 200,000 years ago in Ethiopia. Dispersal of Stone Tools Stone tool making and usage existed in southern and eastern Africa between 2.6 and 1.7 million years ago. Travelling groupsof Homo erectus spread

their usage throughout Africa and Eurasia: as far east as Java by 1.8 million years ago and Northern China by 1.6 million years ago. Neolithic Stone Tools Ground stone tools were first made in Japan around 40,000 BC in the Japanese Paleolithic period. Elsewhere, ground stone tools became important during the Neolithic period beginning about 10,000 BC. Ground stone implements, includingadzes and axes, were manufactured using a long labour intensive process of repeated grinding against an abrasive stone, often using water as a lubricant. Because of their coarse surfaces, some ground stone tools were used for grinding plant foods and were polished not just by intentional shaping, but also by use. An excellent example of Neolithicstone tools is axe heads found at a 2700 BC Neolithic manufacture site in Switzerland. These tools are shown in Figure 4. LEARNING CURVE

An Engineer: Like a Mango Tree “If Mango be the King of Fruits, then it belonged to a Kingly lineage: The Mango Tree”

Anthony Aravind anthony88ctyf@gmail.com

Every summer almost the entire nation relishes on one thing: mangoes. Mangoes are a delight for the young and the old alike. The inner child in almost everyone is awakened at the sight of this delicious fruit. I’m not a great lover of mangoes and that in turn made me curious as to why such glee for this humble fruit. My curiosity resulted this article.

you need to know more about the mango tree, to become like a mango tree in your profession.

Ever asked yourself why mango holds the crown of being the King of fruits?Ever cared to know? I didn’t too, until I saw this little kid on the road engrossed in a juicy mango, who couldn’t care less about dirtying himself. As I began to do my research on mangoes the facts and insights were mindboggling. We all thought that the varied range of its taste is the reason for its title, we were wrong all the while. It’s the versatility in its nature, the reason for its title. Yes, Mango is the only fruit that can be consumed as it is, in any form of its state (raw, unripe, ripe) without having to prepare it.This quality can and should be attributed to the tree alone, after all it is because of the tree the fruit is, what it is.

Massive Structure The mango trees that we have seen growing up as kids are not the actual size of its potential, it has been stunted externally for the ease of harvest. On an average a mango tree grows up to 90 feettall and to a crown width of 40ft.

An engineer is like a mango tree, his/ her work (fruit) should be unmatched, indigenous, unique and unparalleled. First

What makes the mango tree so special? Here are somedistinctiveness of a mango tree and an analogy to the life of an engineer, which will help rebuild yourself as profound andone of a kind engineer.

As an Engineer: How big a person are you? Not the physical stature but your persona. How does your employer/competitor look at you? Weak and feeble or strong and assertive? Napoleon Bonaparte the man behind the French Revolution was small in stature, he measured 5feet 5inches in height but all of history remembers him for his might and prowess.Napoleon wasn’t bogged down by his stature, he stood tall in his persona against his adversaries. Introspect your persona, don’t let any external force haul

your growth for their ease of manipulation. Long Duration of Productivity On an average a mango tree stays in production for more than 40 years, 300 years is the longest tenure a mango tree has stayed in productionfor. Astounding figures isn’t it? This is mainly because of its massive structure and its strength. As an Engineer: Your productivity is directly proportionate to your persona. As an engineer you should be indispensable to your company. If you stay creative, efficient, focused and a contributing factor to your company, there is no way your employer will look for ways to dispose you.The moment you lose your momentum you will be shortlisted to be disposed very soon, because for your employer you are just a deadweight. Deep and Widespread Roots I saved the best for the last, because the highlight of a Mango tree is its deep and widespread roots. A Mango tree can grow its roots to 40ft in depth and as wide as 40ft in radius. I’m going to be elaborate on this, because I want you to become an Engineer that the whole management will look up to. So read through it carefully.

Feeder Roots

Long Duration of Productivity

Anchor Roots Massive Structure Tap Root

The root of a Mango tree is departmentalized into 3 categorizations ‘Feeder roots’, ‘Anchor roots’ and ‘Tap root’; each one carrying out its responsibilities effectively and efficiently. Feeder Roots: The feeder roots branch out of tap root and is responsible for imbibing minerals from the soil and storing them for a long term purpose. It is the nourishment factor of the tree and thereby the fruit. As an Engineer: How good are your theories? The application of the theories to your present scenario? Your workmanship? Your upgradation? Reinventing your methods? Do you realize that your knowledge base is your feeder roots’ responsibility? The more updated and informed you are in your area of expertise (everything related to manufacturing) better are your chances of being on top of the line. Anchor Roots: The anchor roots grow 20ft deeper from where the tap root ends and it carries out the responsibility of pushing down the water and minerals 5ft away from its reach, that which is imbibed by other roots. This responsibility of the anchor root makesthe Mango tree drought resistant, by reaching down to the stored water and mineralsduring drought. A perfect back-up

December 2016

resource to keep itself fostered at all times. As an Engineer: What is your back-up resource? Your personality, which comprises of your uniqueness, talents, gifts, ingenuity, experience, indigeneity, the lushness of your culture, and the embodiment of your spirit is your back-up resource and a safe haven in times of drought. Even if your knowledge is outdated you can resort to these inimitable resources you have harvested over many years of your growing-up. Where knowledge fails, personality hails. Tap Root: While the feeder roots and anchor roots are numerous, tap root is a standalone root. It’s the tap root that assigns responsibilities to the feeder and anchor roots. If the feeder and anchor roots are cut off from the tap root, the tap root has the ability to grow them back. If the tap root is cut off, the tree simply becomes a bonsai – living but unproductive. The tap root is the soul of the Mango Tree. As an Engineer: IDENTITY is your tap root. It is your identity that makes you who you are and the reason behind your intellect, knowledge, abilities, talents, accreditations, workmanship, intricacies and all your feats.Even if all else fails, with your identity you can rebuild them, but the moment you lose your

identityyou become a bonsai of a person. Leave alone being an engineer, without your identity you cannot even build rapport with a toddler.Do not let anyone or anything make you lose your identity. It is all these intricate, extensive, exclusive, untiring, and cog like work that makes the mango tree special. Just as a fruit is worth it’stree, your work is worth your totality and not just few components of your work. Check your ground (YOUR ENVIRONMENT), branch out your feeder roots (YOUR KNOWLEDGE BASE), deepen your anchor roots (YOUR PERSONALITY), and never let an axe (competition, work pressure, employer demands, burnouts, work-life stress, family, friends, societal groups, expectations, your boss, your management, your company and etc.) to lay at your tap root (YOUR IDENTITY). Your IDENTITY is the only thing that makes you, YOU. Patience & Passion Equals

SWAYAM

How often does it happen that people hold on to their dreams till they have achieved it, enduring all the ups and downs? Well, here is a story of patience and passion that inspires us on many levels. One project, eight years and participation of more than 250 students! SWAYAM has earned it all and so have the minds behind it.

Nazia Ali nazia@martinfotech.in The success story of SWAYAM is orbiting the earth with a great velocity. What started with a mere support to a fellow institute, turned into a fully fledged research and development mission. It all started 8 years ago, when the students of IIT Bombay approached students of the Astronomy Club of COEP, seeking help to build a ground station to track their student satellite Pratham. The students from Astronomy Club were struck by an idea to build their own satellite. Soon the idea was fetched to the professors and management. After continuous discussions and meetings, the team of SWAYAM reached to a conclusion where they decided to build 1U satellite which

54

www.martupdate.com

could be used for two way communication between small vessels in sea which needs support or rescue and ground station situated at COEP and from there the information could be given to nearest port and rescue can be arranged. After rigorous brainstorming sessions and securing approval and financial assistance from COEP for the project, the team was able to attain conceptual design review and permission from ISRO to proceed with the project by 2010. The subsequent years saw gradual but substantial developments in the project. In the journey to space, the team of SWAYAM ventured many star moments.

First was when the team was successful in establishing the base station at COEP in 2012. The preliminary design review was successfully cleared by CSAT team at ISRO the next year. Nishchay Mhatre, the project manager in the early years, not only presented two papers at 62nd IAC conference, he is the first Indian to win Luigi Napolitona award. The consecutive years brought great opportunities for the students to participate in various national and international conferences. Every year the team climbed a step closer to the destination. The nano-satellite built has a volume of 1000cc, weighs one kilogram with cube dimensions being 10cm*10cm*11.35cm. December 2016

Visit by Dr. Vedachalam, Space Scientist, ISRO SWAYAM has been installed with sub systems namely, Power, Onboard Computer, Structure and thermal management, Communication and Attitude Control System. What makes the nano- satellite one of its kind in India is its Passive Attitude Control System. The satellite houses a payload capable of half duplex communication over the HAM frequency band which enables it to receive, store and transmit messages from one corner of the globe to the other. The team was supported by eminent personalities from renowned organizations. Constant visits, lectures and reviews by experts like Dr. Vedachalan and Dr. Madhav Dhekne from VSSC, Dr. Raghav Murthy from ISAC and Mr. Pramod Kale and Dr. Anant Patki from ISRO helped the team to pave their way to success. The students got an opportunity to explore their limits, increase their knowledge and gain wider perspectives while doing this project. The project saw a participation of more than 250 students. Since 2009 every year new students were selected to join the

team of SWAYAM. The selection involved preliminary screening, personal interview and a small problem statement involving practical component. The selected interns were given series of presentations by the senior students about all the subsystems and work done by earlier team. The whole project would not have been possible without the support of the faculty. The faculty at COEP walked alongside of the team throughout the journey, providing necessary guidance and the finances. In a government aided institutions, it is rarely seen that the students have brought such credibility to the research work at academic level, as they lack resources and encouragement from the institution itself. SWAYAM witnessed a huge participation. A break less effort that the students continued to put for 8 years has payed off really well. The nano member of COEP, SWAYAM was launched on 22nd June 2016 by ISRO. “We weren’t expecting the project touched the lives of the students at COEP in many ways. Priya Ganadas, a member of the founder batch says, “I had the privilege to be part

of the founding team for COEP’s Satellite Initiative. The founding team for COEP’s Satellite Initiative was group of close knit, enthusiastic like minded friends. We met each other at COEP’s Astronomy Club which I consider the very reason for existence of the satellite initiative. Knowing each other’s morale and work ethic, it was easier for us to function as a team and to collectively commit to a far in future, seemingly difficult goal - designing and building a satellite at COEP”. It was not just an opportunity for one to explore one’s creative mind or develop innovative approach but also a chance to learn team work. Students, who hardly interacted, came together with diverse ideas and enthusiasm. The launch of SWAYAM was a thrilling experience for these young minds. SWAYAM is a reflection of the huge potential that India harbours. The satellite speaks for the creative souls that are just looking for an opportunity to give the world something to be proud of. SWAYAM has made a history and its creators are on the way of making many more.

From The BUILDERS! An institution is indeed a place where people come together with the sole intention to gather knowledge and reproduce the knowledge in a practical form. SWAYAM is one such episode of the process from gathering to reproducing. While the brains got nurtured by knowledge, the hearts shared deep feelings of friendship, togetherness, inspiration and trust. SWAYAM was not an easy deal for these brilliant minds. Setbacks, stagnant moments and disappointment were as much part of the journey as the success. Many a times it took days for the students to overcome the hindrances and solve the problems at hand. “More than once I think! There have been days in testing that nothing worked at all and we had to face disappointment. We had a strong documentation system, so if we went bad a particular step, we would go back a step and scrutinise the mistake and try to rectify it” says Umair. Talking of the satellite, what the students admire about the satellite is the friendly, low cost nature of it. “One normally uses high conducting alloys for the antennas but what we used was a regular carpenter’s measuring tape”, chuckled the dexterous kids.

We look after the attitude determination and control. Our part involves the controlling the satellite while its up there in the space. One of our objectives was to passively stabilize the satellite and we were actually able to do it pretty well. Mihir Paranjape ADCS Sub System

To our surprise, the project was a great success and the beacon could heard in different countries all over the world. USA, Argentina, Japan and many states in India could hear the beacon. This gives a sense of pride to us. Umair Daimi Project Manager

I have recently joined the team. I am learning a lot of new things and its fun working with the team and looking forward to learning more.

The passed out students were still a part of the project. Each one of them stood by the newcomers, supporting and guiding them through the difficult times. The passion for SWAYAM never died and all the seniors acted as a solid pillar to the newbie researchers.

The D Day!

Our responsibility was to build the whole satellite, its configuration and orientation was set by us. We also designed the system that controls the temperature of the satellite. It was my first successful project. It is a great pleasure working with the team.

After a wait of eight long years and real ocean boiling process, the day had finally arrived when the makers of SWAYAM gather at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota to see their success touch the sky and establish itself in the endless space. Quickening heartbeats and enormous applauds had filled the space. “After about 45 minutes we heard the first beacon, all of us got really excited, even the seniors who had joined us for the launch”, said Manasi.

Looking Forward... There is no stopping for those who starve for learning. After SWAYAM , the students of COEP have geared up for a new project, CSAT2. The mission objective is to justify solar sails as an alternative means of space travel by manoeuvering from low earth orbit to a higher orbit and to collect useful scientific data during its journey.

Innovation for a Cause Technology has always been a topic of debate but when it has the potential to fight the social abnormalities; it has time and again proved to be a boon to people who know how to take the right advantage of it. A group of engineering students from IIT Delhi took an innovative step towards women safety, using the right technology. Paras Batra along with his batchmates from IIT Delhi cofounded Leaf Wearables, and now takes care of the Sales and Marketing. In conversation with Paras Batra, he reveals insights of the exceptionally remarkable project, SAFER.

SAFER is an initiative towards women safety. What inspired you to come up with such a product?

Could you tell us about the features of the product and the technology you have used in it?

from people about how much this solution

I went to Singapore on a research scholarship in 2013 when I saw their startup culture. I saw young college students working to solve the problems of their country. Singapore is a fairly small country with much lesser problems to cater compared to India. That’s what inspired me to come back and do something of my own. Luckily my co-founders experienced the same thing during their research in USA and we were on the same page that we wanted to start a venture that solves grand challenges of India.

Unlike a lot of safety apps that are available on the play store and app store, we did not shy away from building a hardware that makes the solution feasible. In India, there were a lot of problems but our focus came on safety when I was boarding a bus from Munirka Bus Stop for my college and shared with my neighbor that I was going to move to a better place due to safety issues and he told me that Nirbhaya case happened from the same bus stop. This made me think about how nothing has changed since then and no one is trying to even do anything about it. That’s when we thought of taking up this huge challenge of solving safety issues in our country.

Cloud Based CAD, It’s Real, It’s Here! Before a year or so it was difficult to imagine someone working in CAD software from a regular web browser like chrome or Mozilla which we use to do our usual google search. But now it has become a reality. For the first time in the history of CAD we have couple of options of fully free CAD environment. This is a great boon for hobbyists, educators, students, freelancers and startups.

Kesava Prasad prasad94@gmail.com

It has become a fact that one can now create an account online on a specific site, as in facebook or Linkedin and start creating 3D models and designs in a browser! Nothing to install! Nothing to save! I am talking about serious mechanical design and not simple 3d models users create, so that they can 3D print it. For such needs there are tools like TinkerCAD and 123D Design from Autodesk. To understand what this is all about please login to www.onshape.com, the world’s first cloud based professional CAD. In fact there is yet another tool called Fusion 360 from AutoDesk, the makers of AutoCAD. However this is not full cloud CAD. This has it’s advantages and disadvantages however. Being a user of Onshape since it’s early days I can assure that this truly is a revolution that is going to take the CAD world by storm. When I was in Japan last year for couple of months I interacted with my engineers in India through this cloud based CAD and it was a great experience to share and

collaborate online, live. One can do design reviews online; add comments, ask someone to follow our screen and so on. Even though I have been mentioning Onshape here specifically, I am not here to promote it in any way. It’s only because it is only the true cloud CAD available as of now. Autodesk’s Fusion 360 enables you to collaborate and share, however the software needs to be installed on a PC or Mac. However full cloud CAD will work from a browser, which means it is independent of the operating system you have. Nothing in this world is perfect, and Onshape has its limitations too. It requires a reasonable amount of internet bandwidth to operate, at least 2 Mbps. Coming to the pricing part, Onshape comes with a price point of 100 USD per month per user for using private documents (read projects). However it is completely free to use if you can make your document public.

Public documents can be accessed by any Onshape user on the internet if they happen to find your document by searching it. Fusion 360 however offers a free option for startups and students for one year which could be extended. For the first time in the history of CAD (as far as I know) we have couple of options of fully free CAD environment. This is a great boon for hobbyists, educators, students, freelancers and startups. To summarize, we are in a connected world now, which is going to influence the way we work, eat and sleep. Design is no exception. Mr. Keshava Prasad is a mechanical engineer with more than 15 years experience in industry and academics. He has worked in Tube Investments (Chennai) for 5 years as a machinery designer and after a short stint as a lecturer in an Engineering College, has been working as an independent electro - mechanical product design/ technology consultant.

The picture shows a user who is accessing the design on a smart phone. This is true collaborative design

The screenshot shows it is nothing but a chrome browser inside which you can see a fairly complicated 3D model / design of an engineering part. Something like this was difficult to imagine two years back. The interesting thing is that the same model or design can be accessed and edited by more than one user simultaneously

CUTING EDGE

A Generation of Innovation Science has never failed in changing people’s perceptions. Technology has encouraged people to think out of the box and bring out the best for the world. This has brought innovations that not only aims at attaining technological superiority but also fulfill the responsibility and duties towards preserving and enhancing the resources to create the perfect stage for development.

Ramya Ramakrishnan ramya.ramakrishnan.rr@gmail.com

Cutting edge stands for all the ideas that has or will change the face of humanity as we know it. Four such astounding breakthroughs that will revolutionize science in a zillion ways have been covered in this column. The world has witnessed a considerable growth and expansion in technology in the past 2-3 decades. The concept of “Artificial Intelligence” that is developing systems that can think and perform tasks that generally require human intervention like decision making, speech interpretation and use of logical analysis is a grabbing attention all over the globe. Google’s self driving car is an example of one such vision. The project will make driving easier and hassle free for

tedious jobs like logistics, transportation and commuting long distance. It will also open avenues for further research in role of robots and artificial intelligence in automobile sector. The next step into space research, “THE MARS ROVER 2020” was announced by NASA on December 4, 2016. The rovers are similar to the six-wheeled, one ton predecessor “Curiosity”, but will be armed with additional instruments for exploring and in-depth scientific and technological investigation on the red planet. Many unanswered question about existence of life on mars, are expected to be reveled by Mars 2020. The depletion of our natural resources and degrading environmental conditions are

posing threat to life on earth. Development and environment go hand in hand therefore scientist and researchers are opting for paths which will maintain a perfect balance between the two. With introduction of all weather solar panels scientists have stepped up their game to conserve our environment. This innovation, as the name suggests, can be utilized all twelve months of the year. A group of talented Indian scientists have successfully found a toxic free alternative in the field of medical research. The Quantum Carbon Dots have proved that everything provided to us by nature can never be waste. These innovations gives us hope, ignites our mind and awakens the desire to keep going and make this planet a better place to live in.

December 2016

Sameer Kelkar, the CEO of Grind Master Machines Pvt. Ltd, loves to venture into new horizons of Robotic Applications such as Grinding, Deflashing, Fettling, Machining and many others. With his leadership Grind Master, a pioneer and leader in special purpose machines for Metal Finishing, Deburring, NanoFinish and solutions including Robotic automation and Abrasives, has also several registered designs and technology patents (pending) in the field of microfinishing and superfinishing. An explorer at heart, Sameer Kelkar, is a Silver Medallist and Graduate of IIT Bombay, and MS in Robotics from University of California, Berkelet. In conversation with Mart, Mr. sameer Kelkar talks about his vivid experiences, from being an engineering student to leading a successful organisation.

Do you feel engineering is perceived as a job oriented course rather than an opportunity to explore and create?

students have engaged themselves in the incessant rat race, do you feel becoming an engineer was easier 10 years ago?

Engineering is one of the most prominent higher education subjects in India. Apart from the job opportunities it brings about, it is also sought for due to the scope for further studies abroad.

I don’t think it as easier or harder. If you talk about IIT JEE, getting into IIT was definitely harder 10 years ago, simply because there were fewer IITs.

Our education system is very competitive. It creates a view of perceiving every course of action in terms of “scope” and “opportunity” in materialistic terms rather than inculcate the pleasure of the discipline itself. Thus most students land up perceiving engineering for its job opportunities rather than exploration and creativity.

The Startup culture in recent years has had a very positive effect on students, and I would say that the “Rat” race has actually reduced! More students are now pursuing their passion rather than set paths. I am glad that the generation that has stepped out of colleges in 2000s has a very diverse set of opportunities in front of them than earlier times.

You are a product of IIT, given that IITs are the most sought institute for engineering, how challenging was it to get into the institution and further perform to its reputation? Cracking the IIT JEE is pretty tough. I worked very hard for 2 years to get a good rank in the entrance exam. Consistent 10-12 hours a day of study, based in Aurangabad (where good coaching was not available in 2000) was challenging but also fun. Such preparation instills a confidence, mental toughness that continues through life. I firmly believe that one of the reasons IIT Graduates do so well later is BECAUSE of the tough preparation for getting into IIT. The underlying values of Discipline, Rigour, Detailing and most importantly withstanding high pressure situations are invaluable assets. Performing to the reputation of IIT thus came naturally to me. Considering the present scenario, where

December 2016

Talking about the life in IIT, students have many fantasies revolving their heads. Could you share your experience at IIT? In IIT one shares a terrific peer group of students, good environment and fairly good courses and teachers. Though there can be improvements in terms of giving more hands-on experience, more exposure to industry and so on. One hears lots of stories of students feeling too much pressure at the IITs. I really find that strange. Believe me the pressure to get into IIT is far more than the courses at the IIT!! Co curricular life in campus is extremely lively, with continual sports, cultural, social events. This is as much learning as the academics. I really enjoyed the 4 years at IIT Bombay and consider them as one of the best days of my life.

You are the second generation running the business; did you experience any difficulties dealing with the pre-established work culture of the company? Grind Master had a dedicated sincere workforce with a passion for machine building when I joined. This was a very good platform to build on. As a young engineer and business leader I had to earn the respect of all the team members. I have been trying to transform the work culture into a more professional and also more fun and succeeded partially in doing so. How long have you been associated with Grind Master? Did you begin your career at Grind Master with the post of CEO? I have been associated with Grind Master since 2010 (6 years). I joined the company as an Engineer in R&D and my first project was to develop Robotic Automation as a product and then a line of business. I then got an opportunity to head a business vertical building Special Purpose Machines and Automation solutions and further opportunities in setting up new systems and processes in the company. Then in 2014 I got into Sales and Business Development functions. I am glad to say that I am the first ‘professional’ CEO at Grind Master since April 2016. You seem to be really passionate about engineering and your business, any tips you would like to give our young engineers who aspire to become an entrepreneur? Follow your passions. DMG MORI Software Solutions: Products and Solutions for the Digital Transformation “Industry 4.0” is dominating discussions of the future like nothing else, particularly in the machine tool design sector. As the world’s leading manufacturer of machine tools, DMG MORI is supporting its customers on their path to complete digitization with the help of the CELOS® app-supported system and with other intelligent Software Solutions.

DMG MORI is promoting CELOS® and intelligent Software Solutions as an elementary basis of the transition to full digitization of production process chains. The change to digitization is becoming ever clearer – particularly in the field of machine tool design. In turn, this means that software in the production environment is becoming increasingly important. For this reason, companies in the industry are following developments particularly attentively. They know precisely that the foundations for Industry 4.0 must be laid today and in the immediate future in day-to-day production. DMG MORI is supporting its customers in the digital transformation with the help of integrated solutions, which can be connected seamlessly to one another. CELOS® from DMG MORI A central component of DMG MORI’s customer-oriented innovation strategy is the app-supported CELOS® operating and control system, which the machine tool manufacturer introduced approximately 3 years ago. Since then, it has been

continuously and very specifically developed. Using a common interface for machine and office PC, both manufacturing and production planning staff can manage, document and visualize the sequence of jobs and processes as well as the machine data. Along with its tasks on the factory floor, CELOS® also enables data to be exchanged with high-level structures thanks to its open architecture. CELOS® therefore enables the customer to fully integrate his machines into the company organization while, at the same time, creating an interface between the machining process and cyber-physical production systems of the future. The advantages for day-to-day operation are impressive: a time-saving of 30% for set-up, and half the effort and time required for calculating technical values or for searching for important data are just one example of savings, which can be achieved with CELOS®. Thanks to the continuous development of further future-oriented applications, CELOS® ensures a trouble-free introduction of Software Solutions for Industry 4.0. An excellent example is the CELOS®

CONDITION ANALYZER. In conjunction with the I4.0 sensor pack, on the one hand, this provides the user with a perfect software tool for monitoring machine condition and machining process, enabling him to carry out timely performance and condition analyses directly at the machine or externally via our CELOS® PC. On the other hand, in the second step, the data gathered by the sensors and locally conditioned can be forwarded to a cloud platform. Here decisive knowledge for a reliable “predictive maintenance” solution can be derived using an algorithm-based long-term evaluation. Customers therefore save maintenance costs and have an effective tool for substantially avoiding unplanned downtimes. In addition, along with 50 functional expansions and improvements relating to the 16 current standard APPs, at AMB, DMG MORI will for the first time be presenting optional APPs, such as the CELOS® PERFORMANCE MONITOR for measuring Key Performance Indicators (KPI) or for so-called OEE analyses.

CELOS® enables networking and full integration with the company organization.

Shop-floor-oriented programming is still extremely important, particularly in the production of individual workpieces and with small and mediumsized production batches. 24 special DMG MORI technology cycles enable direct programming to be carried out at the machine 80% faster using a dialog system. Here, outstanding examples include different cycles for the production of tooth systems and gear wheels.

What is more, with the CELOS® DEVELOPER as a creative development environment, the CELOS® ecosystem has now also been opened up to third-party providers. The CELOS® CLAMP CHECK and the CELOS® SURFACE ANALYZER are the first two representatives of this new generation of CELOS® partner APPs, which will now be successively followed by further innovations. CELOS® CLAMP CHECK significantly increases machine safety in the turning area based on a wireless in-process monitoring of clamping forces. On the other hand, the CELOS® SURFACE ANALYZER, which is certified for medical and aerospace applications, determines the surface quality of the component during the process. The DMG MORI process chain - a key component of the software strategy The DMG MORI process chain is a good example of a successful digital transformation and a practical link between the virtual and the real world. This statement is substantiated not only by the many successful customer applications, but also based on the competence partnership between DECKEL MAHO Seebach GmbH and the Porsche LMP1 team. The background of this collaboration is the premium partnership between DMG MORI and the Porsche Motorsport team. Last season, Porsche were victorious in the long-distance world championships as well as in the driver’s and constructor’s championships. Among other things, the so-called Porsche Motorsport Center in Seebach manufactures complex pump housings in small batches December 2016

in different materials and technically demanding fixing elements. For this purpose, the racing stable’s developers provide the necessary CAD data, while the manufacturing experts in Seebach are responsible for the whole process right up to the finished workpiece – starting with the processing of the CAD data and the CAM programming using Siemens NX CAM, to 1:1 simulation with the DMG MORI Virtual Machine and highly accurate finishing on our high-tech machine tools.

control systems.

Based on the virtualized process chain, the machining centers can be optimized in advance and thus enable perfect planning, effective collision protection and a reduction in set-up times to the absolute minimum. In other words, the importance of the DMG MORI Virtual Machine can definitely be compared with that of a racing simulator for the drivers. The system provides 1:1 simulation under real conditions – including the machine kinematics and control. The result is a high degree of safety and fast implementation in the (equally exciting) real world.

Outstanding examples include the machining of free-form surfaces using 5-axis interpolation, and different cycles for toothcutting and gear wheel production. Other highlights of the cycles include protective control for machine, workpiece and tools, the 3D quickSET® Toolkit for checking and correcting the kinematic precision of 4 and 5-axis milling machines, and the cycle for process-oriented optimization of feed speeds at the press of a button taking into account the table loading.

Technology cycles from DMG MORI – programming software offensive in the production hall Shop-floor-oriented programming is still extremely important, particularly in the production of individual workpieces and with small and medium-sized production batches. And it will remain equally important for a long time to come. Working with cycles is today the norm; standard cycles for turning, milling and drilling have long been part of the performance spectrum of modern

Backed by its decades of application experience, DMG MORI has gone well beyond this standard and currently offers 24 special DMG MORI technology cycles for turning/turning & milling or milling/ milling & turning in its portfolio. This enables the operator to carry out complex machining functions directly at the machine up to 80% faster using a dialog system and parameterized context menus.

At the same time, it must be said that all strategies for the future at DMG MORI are people-oriented, particularly in the case of the new future trend towards the “Smart Factory”. As a machine tool manufacturer, the company sees the optimum integration of employee potential as the most important success factor when implementing new approaches in production. This applies particularly to the operation of machine tools, which encompasses a multitude of complex tasks. For more details visit www.dmgmori.com www.martupdate.com

The New KR 3 AGILUS: The Agile Lightweight Robot KUKA is presenting the newest member of the KR AGILUS family of small robots. The extremely compact KR 3 AGILUS completes the series of small robots.

As a result of rising wages in almost every country and growing quality requirements, the automation of production and the efficient use of robots are unavoidable in the electronics industry. At the same time, efforts to automate pose challenges for the industry and its special characteristics. In the past, product series remained the same for years. These days, in contrast, product models are modified after just a few months. Product life cycles are becoming markedly shorter. What is trendy today is water under the bridge tomorrow. This fast-paced environment requires an extremely high degree of flexibility. Manufacturers must cover an increasing variety of models and efficiently compensate for fluctuations in production batch size. Automation of the production for a specific product type is thus becoming increasingly unprofitable. Because of that maximum flexibility and modularity is being expected by corresponding automation solutions to be able to use

production systems easily and individually for different tasks – such as assembly, testing and inspection, materials handling, loading and unloading of machines – during non-productive times and to be able to react quickly to changes in production and process sequences.

The newest member of the KR AGILUS

In light of this, KUKA has developed the latest member of the KR AGILUS family of small robots: the KR 3 AGILUS. India’s First Commercial Magnesium Cold Chamber Die Caster IBEX won the ‘Best Casting of the Year’ award during the biennial ALUCAST 2016 engineering has for its latest innovation; Magnesium Cold Chamber Die casting for lightweight, superior machining and great die life.

Srikanth Prabhakara Managing Director, IBEX Engineering Pvt Ltd With Strong motivation and the willingness to take up challenges, Srikanth started IBEX Engineering Pvt Ltd, by setting up a 100% (EOU) Export oriented unit, in Bengaluru. Prior to venturing into IBEX Engineering he was with WIPRO LTD and was in Production Planning and Control.

Magnesium is the lightest structural material (1.8 g/cm3), it is the 8th most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. It occurs naturally in Dolomite, Magnesite, Carnallite and Chloride (sea water). It is 75% lighter than steel, 33%lighter than aluminum, possesses high strength to weight ratio, abundant supply and is 100% recyclable. Components made of magnesium, can be utilised in many areas, for example in automobile industry, electronic industry, camera bodies etc. Given that they’re incredibly lightweight, it makes sense to use magnesium alloys for weight reduction in airplane construction. Magnesium is one-third lighter than its counterpart, aluminum, which is more commonly used in the production of airplane seats. Furthermore, magnesium December 2016

and magnesium alloys also claim advantages over aluminium in terms of stiffness and density; they feature excellent ductility as well. Lightweight, superior machining, greater die life, large thin-walled near net shape casting, greater mechanical properties and greater general corrosion resistance over aluminum is making the automakers prefer Magnesium. Magnesium Cold-chamber die-casting Magnesium Cold-chamber die-casting is a process, where metal is liquified in a furnace with melt surrounded by inert gases and then dosed into a cold chamber of a die casting machine and immediately injected into the die. Controlled Solidification of the metal in the cavity of the die makes for a near net shape part.

Challenges for Magnesium die casting At elevated temperatures magnesium has a very high tendency to ignite and this can lead to an explosion when in contact with moisture/water. The primary care in the magnesium die casting process lies in preventing the molten metal from coming in contact with oxygen and storage of ingots/scrap. There has been substantial advancement in the melting and dosing technology which has greatly enhanced the efficient and safe casting of Magnesium. IBEX won the ‘Best Casting of the Year’ award during the biennial ALUCAST 2016 event that concluded on Saturday, 3rd December 2016. The new casting was made for Thermal Handheld Imaging Device which is used by Ministry of Defence through Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). www.martupdate.com

Quick Opening and Filling: Energy Supply for Robots in a New Size Even more cables can be fitted in a matter of seconds with the triflex TRLF.125.The motion plastics specialist igus has expanded its range of multi-axis energy chains and introduces a new size for the lightweight triflex TRLF. With 125 millimetres diameter, this is the largest in the range and can safely guide even more cables and hoses. The e-chain for torsional movements is impressive with very fast assembly and disassembly, which significantly reduces shut-downs. For this reason, it is extremely popular with robot manufacturers and users.

Industrial robots have become indispensable in production today, as they save a lot of labour and time. In order to achieve this in the equipment on the robot itself, the motion plastics specialist igus has developed the multi-axis triflex TRLF energy chains, which are now available in a new size. The ‘L’ in the product name stands for ‘light’ because material is saved through the open design of the individual links, but at the same time the cables and hoses are still guided safely. The ‘F’ stands for ‘flip open’ and describes the mechanism very well: “Each single chain link has three pivotable cross bars that can be opened up at any time by hand or wiith a screwdriver,” explains HaraldNehring, authorised agent for e-chainsystems at igus. “This allows the filling with big cable diameters or hose packages.” With the new size TRLF.125 with a nominal diameter of

SHOW REPORT

FCON 2016: Helping Attain Sustainable Development The Indian Foundry Industries have established themselves by occupying a major position in Global economics. FCON 2016, proved to be a dais where ideas were exchanged, concerns where expressed and solutions were addressed.

The Indian Foundry industry has played a major role in contributing to the Indian Economy. It has been a big player in Government’s “Make in India” initiative by fetching huge foreign exchange in return of producing world class castings. It won’t be an exaggeration to state that the foundry industries are one of the major contributors to the growing GDP of our country. The World market has plunged into the deep pits of recession which has led to lower productivity, downfall in profit margin, higher operational costs, and lower sales. This has proved to be a major setback for Indian foundry industry. On 20th November, FCON a two day national conference was held at Pride Hotel, Pune in the presence of large knowledgeable audience. The event was inaugurated at the hands of Mr. Vijay Menon, Chairman & MD, Menon and Menon LTD. Kolhapur. In his speech, he acknowledged the changing role of Foundry Industries in the global market. The rapidly changing business

structure demands effective strategies, which made him stress on the needs of an action plan for growth of Indian foundries to face severe competition and customer demands. The Indian Foundry Industry can only flourish with a constant balance in involvement of automation and human resource. Modernization and automation is the need of the hour for survival but training and motivation of human resource is also very important. Manufacturing Process Control: Key to World Class Foundry “We might have a perfectly controlled business, with a very enlightened decision making process but only God can protect us from irrational decisions of others.” Inaugurating FCON 2016, Chief Guest Mr. Vijay Menon, Chairman & Managing Director, Menon and Menon Limited, shared his experience with the industry, the opportunities and challenges in the very field. We bring you the excerpts. Vijay Menon

Chairman & Managing Director, Menon and Menon Ltd

You have been a part of this industry for a long time, what are the changes that you have seen over these years? The automotive industry was a heavily regulated sector in the past. Consequently, there was a large waiting list and the customers lacked choice. Whatever the industry could produce was sold and the automobile OEMs did not need to modernize to survive and prosper. Similarly an average Indian Foundry in 80’s was lagging at least 30 years behind the western Industry and the gap was increasing. Today the Indian economy is well integrated with the world. The Indian OEM’s and foundry industry are now exposed to global competition. Auto OEMs are today free to source their components from anywhere in the world. Therefore, modernization and good manufacturing practices have become essential for survival. The gap between Indian and Western Foundry Industry has been largely bridged, in next 5 years the gap might be nonexistent. How is the present economic scenario going to affect the Foundry Industry? The Indian economy is one the fastest growing major economies in the world. With increasing investment in infrastructure, the growth rates can be December 2016

expected to increase. We are already the largest tractor market in the world, the global center for the production of small cars, and the list will keep growing. All major companies that missed the China bus would not like to miss this big Indian opportunity. Those that were successful in China would like to repeat their success here. The demand for castings will therefore see an exponential growth. Further the Indian frugal engineering capacity is also expected to bring in sizeable export opportunities for capable domestic foundries. How do we ensure that our foundry does well? Control over the manufacturing processes holds the key to a world class foundry. It is possible to produce good castings consistently with less sophisticated equipment, but it is impossible to produce good castings consistently with poor manufacturing processes. Besides manufacturing processes, establishing component design capabilities, training and development of people, establishing a continuous improvement work culture etc. will play a key role in ensuring that our casting business does well. These are the factors that will help distinguish a capable foundry from a weak one. The top management must strive to bring about

these changes in the organization. As of today what are the threats faced by foundry industry? The future of foundry industry appears to be extremely bright, however arbitrary changes in the regulatory environment, emotional approach to solving environment related issues etc. might pose serious threats to the industry. Training and retaining talent is also a big challenge today. Paying people well and at the same time maintaining the competitiveness of the organization is a constant battle. Keeping productivity growth rates above the salary increase rates will be a very important challenge. What does the future hold for our Indian Foundry Industry? The Indian automotive market is set for a quantum leap. Indian frugal engineering capability would be instrumental in putting India on the global foundry map. Foundries that will invest in modern equipment and modern processes will thrive. Those that do not modernize will have to shut down. Companies will have to invest significant resources to develop component level design expertise. Specialization will be the name of the game. The day of the generalist is fast getting over. The future, as always, will be bright for the good and bleak for the bad. www.martupdate.com

has hit the ascending scale in the present

How is your industry doing at present? Asian market is one of the major hubs for production and consumption of machine tools. And India stands 13th in production and 10th in consumption in the global machine tools sector. As per the latest research, India has accounted for 0.9% of the global machine tool production, with an increase of 1.1% in USD terms. The industry is performing very well, especially the automobile and auto components industry, and the push from the government through the ‘Make in India’ campaign is only taking the industry towards profitability.

and tool industry for a long time now, what are the changes you think the industry has faced over the time? The machine tools industry has seen a wide array of changes in its functioning, and time, and specifically the Indian market has embarked on a journey to make the country a manufacturing hub through the ‘Make in India’ initiative. How has demonetization affected the industry? Change is always inevitable, and this time it has come in the form of demonetization, which has shaken the whole country, and the machine tool industry hasn’t been spared either. However, we have to support the Government wholly, irrespective of the hassles we are facing today, for the betterment of the economy. The Prime Minister had mentioned 50 days and I am sure things will improve as days go by. Till then, the industry shall manage. December 2016

New T-Burst Holder for Swiss Turning Applications

Perfect to Machine Miniature Products made from Difficultto-cut Materials. TaeguTec has introduced a new addition, the T-Burst high pressure coolant holder for Swiss turning applications. The T-Burst holder for Swiss turning applications, as with the current T-Burst holder, applies high pressure coolant from dual holes directly between the metal chip and the insert’s rake face; a feature that optimizes control, extends tool life as well as increases productivity through higher cutting speeds and feed rates. It is capable of handling coolant pressure up to 140 bar maximum and is designed to machine miniature

Multitasking and mill-turn

The work required to install and parameterize the module is minimal. Only a single standard cable is required for stable, fault-free, bidirectional data transmission between the milling head and controller. The cable is connected to the milling head interface in the system ring. Data transmission is noise-immune as well as resistant to EMC effects. The module can hold a total of 14 segments of 64 bytes each.
