One day in 1955, Albert Miller looked into a groundhog hole on his farm. What he found ultimate ly prompted the University of Pittsb urgh’s anthropology departm ent to embark on an archaeological dig that unearthed artifacts dating back 16,000 years. Now, thanks to a recen tly—constructed enclosure, travelers to the Rockshelter can peer into the old est and deepest parts of the excavatio n site. In addition, visitors can experienc e life in a 16th century Indian village, an 18th century frontier farm and a 19t h century rural village. Madonna of the Trail
National Road
The first thoroughfare built entirely with Federal funds, Route 40 (as it is known in some part s) began to take shape in 1811. But when the money stopped flowing in the 1830s, so did construction. Para lleling the military road forged by George Washington and General Edward Braddock in the mid 1700s, the Nati onal Road’s 600plus miles start in Maryland and trav erse through Pennsylvania (PA boasts 90 of thos e miles), West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana, ending in Illinois. First used by pioneers in Conestoga wagons and then by families in station wagons, the National Roa d was designed to accommodate travelers. To that end, stone and brick taverns lined its path. Some of thos e original structures still stand, like Scenery Hill’s Century Inn. In the late 1920s, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution commissione d statues of pioneer mothers known as Madonnas of the Trail. Washington County’s Madonna can be found in Beallsville.

There’s nothing complicated about finding your bliss in Washington County. In fact, you can hear it in the performances of the orchestra, jazz ensemble and choir groups. You can see it in the theatrical productions and art gallery showings. You can experience it in the events sponsored by community and cultural centers. And if you’re looking for some tangible acknowledgment that you are on the path to enlightenment, the area institutions of higher learning offer certificates and degrees (providing you pass your courses).
