John F. Kennedy is President of the United States.

And, on November 9, 1962, Francis E. Pettit, L. Blatch Cummins and John Mazza, Commissioners of the County of Washington, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, did resolve “… the Washington-Greene County Tourist Promotion Agency is hereby designated as the Tourist Promotion Agency for Washington with full power and authority to represent said County in all matters relevant to and for all purposes of the Tourist Promotion Law of 1961. Motion carried unanimously.” The rest, as they say, is history. Lots of it. The history of Washington County pre-1962 spans the ages, from the first tourists that trekked beside Cross Creek 16,000 years ago, to Whiskey rebels and Underground Railroaders, from historic boat builders, wildcatters and entrepreneurs, to wool merchants and glass makers. It’s a history of steel and coal, oil and gas, innovation and tradition, town and country, old and new, then and now. We tell a compelling tale of then and now at Washington County Tourism. We celebrate our past at festivals and events, at historic attractions and heritage sites and in our communities and families. We celebrate our future in our schools and institutions, in our technology and corporations, in our diversity and culture. And we celebrate now at our world class attractions, shopping, gaming and lodging properties that put Washington County at the forefront of tourism in the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. We hope you enjoy this commemorative 2012 edition of the Washington County Official Visitors Guide. We’re celebrating 50 years of tourism promotion in our county, and you’re invited to take a fond look back and an excited look forward at all our county and region have to offer. We know you’ll discover that there are many reasons to Visit Washington County PA!

Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency Then & Now Once the order was given in 1962 officially creating the agency, the search was on for a home. Between then and now, the WCTPA shingle was seen on South College Street in Washington, at the George Washington Hotel, at the Hilton on Racetrack Road (formerly the Holiday Inn, now Doubletree), the Holiday Inn on West Chestnut Street in Washington (now a senior living facility), North Main Street in Washington, McClelland Road in Canonsburg, the old Franklin Mall (now Washington Crown Center) and finally the train station.

The WCTPA set up shop at the historic former B&O Railroad Station on South Main Street in downtown Washington in 2001 and added a Visitor Information Center location at Tanger Outlets in 2008.

Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village Then & Now By 1962, Albert Miller was pretty sure that he, or more accurately his property, was sitting on something significant. However, it would take another 11 years before he invited students from the University of Pittsburgh’s anthropology department to start digging. What those aspiring archaeological students discovered was evidence of the oldest continuously inhabited site in North America.

Building on that discovery, Meadowcroft (a National Historic Landmark since 2005) now offers visitors an opportunity to view the excavation site; as well as enjoy an up close look at life in a 16th century Indian village, an 18th century frontier farm, and a 19th century rural village.

Valley Skating Center Then & Now The Shoups know how to roll. For 50-plus years, the family (parents, Floyd and Janet, and daughters, Marcia and Linda) has been involved in the skating business -- there was the Arena Roller Rink, Interstate Skateland, Roll-R-Skate and ultimately Valley Skating Center. Linda Shoup Miner, a champion roller-figure skater herself, keeps the family tradition spinning in Donora. In fact, as the only competitive roller skating center left in Western PA, the rink recently turned out a gold medal winner at the Roller Skating National Championships.

Washington County Parks Then & Now Mingo Creek, Cross Creek and Ten Mile Creek county parks have been a part of the scenery since the beginning of time -- or at least since 1962. The Department of Parks and Recreation oversees 5,500 acres of land within the county lines. The parks are open throughout the year and offer picnic shelters, nature trails, bicycle and bridle trails and hunting and fishing, as well as recreational programs and special events. Plans for 2012 call for a new paved walking trail in Mingo Creek Park, as well as a newly applied limestone surface to cover the entire 17.3 miles of the Panhandle Trail in Washington County.

Canonsburg Fourth of July Celebration Then & Now In 1962, the Canonsburg 4th of July Celebration was just a sparkler of an idea. For that was the year, Anthony L. Colaizzo was so disappointed that his hometown was not turning up the red, white and blue, he decided to do something about it.

Fifty years later, the Canonsburg 4th of July Parade has become a tradition attracting 50,000 to 60,000 people to the city. Itʼs just Canonsburgʼs way of saying, “Happy Birthday, America” and “Thank you, Mr. Colaizzo”.

Made in America Then & Now It’s almost impossible to imagine a time when two mainstays of modern American life — McDonald’s and WalMart – were not a part of the national landscape. Well, that time was 1962, because that’s when the first McDonald’s featuring indoor seating debuted in Denver, CO and the inaugural Wal-Mart store opened in Rogers, Arkansas.

Nowadays, you can find the Golden Arches in more than 33,000 locations throughout the world. And when you add up all the WalMarts in the U.S. -- the discount stores, the supercenters, the neighborhood markets and the express stores – the grand Walmart total equals 3,818.

California University of PA Then & Now By 1962, Cal U, then California Teachers College, had become California State College. Situated on 294 acres along the Monongahela River, the school was in the midst of a building boom, with a library, science, gymnasium and classroom buildings either dedicated or under construction. Cal U recently opened its new state-ofthe-art Convocation Center. Get the Picture Then & Now Back in the day, a Westinghouse first generation 15-inch color TV sold for $1,295 (that adds up to nearly $10,000 circa 2012). Not surprisingly, most Americans were still opting to watch their favorite shows (like Bonanza, Perry Mason, The Andy Griffith Show and Dr. Kildare) the old fashioned way – in black and white.

And if you happen to be connected to the Internet, chances are you’ll be able to catch reruns of Bonanza, Perry Mason, The Andy Griffith Show and Dr. Kildare.

Visit Canonsburg

For a song and a dance! Come experience the hometown of Perry Como, Bobby Vinton and the Four Coins. And stick around to sing, dance, sample foods and shop at our “Cool Nights” summer concert series, the Pennsylvania Bavarian Oktoberfest, Old-Fashioned Christmas Festival and the secondlargest Fourth of July Parade in Pennsylvania. We’re also home to the “singing” Perry Como statue, Sarris Candies and some of the finest antique stores in the state. “It’s impossible” to stop by without singing “Hot Diggity”— and doing a little dancing, too!
