The American HellRiders featuring The Wall of Death
Professional riders race their motorcycles and high-powered go-karts on the side of a vertical wall reaching speeds of over 50 mph! The audience views from the top of the drum, looking down. The bikes start in the middle, at the bottom of the drum, and drive up an initial ramped section until they gain enough velocity to drive horizontally to the floor, defying gravity. Located on Rally Grounds. Shows.
TEAM FMX East
Team FMX East is the premier motorcycle stunt team in America and they will be performing live each day of the ROT Rally. Every show will include the infamous “back flip.” Team FMX has mastered the art of motorcycle high flying stunts. Team FMX is led by Travis Willis and he and his high flying athletes will amaze you with their daring and skill. Performances daily near the “Great Pond of the Republic.”
Biker Games by Buda
Buda and his expert panel of judges are “calling all Bikers” to participate in the 2011 Biker Games by Buda! These games consist of motorcycle field games involving riding skills of both pilot and passenger — mixed with some fun! Biker Games by Buda is located in the covered vendor mall. The winners of each event walk away with a guaranteed good time and a trophy in their hands!

Motorcycles and tattoos share the same allure: Enjoyment of the Extreme. Some of America’s top tattoo artists will be setting up shop in the ThunderDome Arena and ready to show off years of skill. Even if you aren’t a tattoo aficionado, stop by and watch these artists work. They really know how to make a point!
Michael Griffin — America’s Premier Escape Artist
Griffin has taken passé escape concepts to an escalated level — into a new realm of risk in the art of escapology. What ordinarily would be a well-known handcuff escape Griffin adds the suffocating dare of having to escape from them inside a heavy airtight canvas sack. Even the U.S. Government hasn’t been able to hold him in a real Postal Mailbag locked on the outside by a high security Government lock! $100,000 REWARD to anyone who can come up with something that will keep him prisoner! See schedule for showtimes and locations.

Since then, Brodie has been the “go-to automotive artist for NASCAR, as well as cornerstone racing celebrities such as Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Mark Martin. Using the canvas as he would a vehicle, Brodie juxtaposes vibrant colors with metal, an approach that catches the eye and demands attention.

ROT Custom B
JEFF NICKLUS:
Desperado Motorcycles
Master Builder Jeff Nicklus is Founder, CEO and Chief Designer of Desperado Motorcycles and Jeff Nicklus Customs LLC. Desperado Motorcycles is widely recognized as one of the leading manufacturers of custom motorcycles in the U.S. Desperado Motorcycles builds a complete range of Custom Production Motorcycles while Jeff Nicklus Customs produces only One-Off Signature Motorcycles entirely by hand, each representing the pinnacle of sleek design and cutting edge technologies.
BRONSON WILLARD:
Southern Metal Choppers
Bronson Willard’s way of thinking is that no two bikes should be the same — just like no two bike owners are the same. That’s why here every custom motorcycle is truly a one-of-a-kind creation and not based on a production model with factory options. Southern Metal will also guide you through your choice of components, parts, paint, graphics and accessories.
CRAIG WHITFORD:
CC Trikes & Hostile Cycles
Craig Whitford has been creating custom machines for the better part of 30 years. Everything from classic led sleds that have been chopped, sectioned, and lowered to monster trucks, drag cars and the now futuristic all aluminum or steel custom choppers. He builds the entire project, including the cage, aluminum interior, motor, tranny, and his own rear ends.
RICK FAIRLESS: Strokers Dallas
Rick Fairless, the long-haired hippy who has never missed a day of work in his life, shows up at the gym every day before 5:00 am, gets to work by 6:00 am and stays until 7:00 pm every night, 8 days a week. Strokers Dallas is only closed two days of the year (Thanksgiving and Christmas), and you can bet Rick is here working on those days too!
RANDY LESLIE:
East Texas Choppers
If you want it chopped, rocked or tattoo’d, East Texas Choppers is where you want to be. Besides building radical, custom one-off theme bikes, Randy Leslie and his crew throw the best parties next door at Softails Bar and Grill.

JASON BARRON:
Primer Inc. Customs
Started in 2006 by Pat Kahanek and Jason Barron, Primer Inc. Customs is dedicated to building unique custom bikes that do not follow any specific trend. DANA MENEFEE: Siouxicide Choppers
Dana Menefee at Siouxicide Choppers is located in Sioux City, IA and is well known throughout the Midwest for their Harley Davidson custom fabrication work. Their custom bikes have been included in almost every motorcycle magazine in publication in Europe and the U.S. Old School Choppers and Bobbers are what most people know them for.
TROY NICHOLSON:
Lightning Cycle Works
Troy Nicholson has a long history of outstanding bike builds with a career spanding more than 30 years. He has built two custom choppers for the ROT Military Bike Giveaway and also the ROT Chop Off. Troy will be attending a number of events across the U.S. this year. Stop by and see what’s up his sleeve this year in the Thunderdome!
JOE MARTIN:
Martin Brothers Bikes
Joe Martin’s bikes have been seen in over 40 different magazine features with 14 of them being covers on magazines such as Easyrider, Hot Bike, Hot Rod Bikes, Iron Works, American Iron, Barnettes, Clubhouse, V-Twin and Street Chopper. Austin’s Custom Shop
Showcase
Austin Icon
BUD’S MOTORCYCLE SHOP 2612 East 1st Street (Cesar Chavez) Austin Texas 78702 512.472.8658 www.budsmotorcycleshop.com In the heart of the State’s Capitol is an unassuming motorcycle shop that has evolved into an iconic establishment and a part of Austin history. Stocked full of OEM and NOS (New Old Stock), Bud’s Motorcycle Shop is a gearhead’s dreamland — Shovelhead motors are stacked beside one another, a collection of remanufactured Panhead cases await assembly, a 40’s something Knuckle is in the middle of a restoration project and sits on a bike lift beside a hotrod Buell. The business includes a frame shop, machine shop, motor room and several assembly bays. And at the head of it all is Bud, a spoke-spoken gray-haired gentleman with an infectious smile. For more than 31 years, Bud has orchestrated business from these four lots just east of downtown. During that time he has just about done it all including importing more than 700 used Harleys from Mexico in the 80’s to maintaining a parts and repair operation for almost 20 years during the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis.
What do you consider the shop’s specialty? “Murder-sickles.”
What is your involvement with the Republic of Texas Rally?
“We’ve supported the Rally since its inception. ROT is good for business. Not just mine but all of Austin. I’ve known the promoters and organizers for years and they are exception professionals and great to deal with.”
Will the shop be open during ROT?
“Yes, our doors will be open during the Rally. I hope everyone can stop by for a visit and check out what we have to offer. I do this for a living and I enjoy what I do.”
How important is the Republic of Texas Rally?
“As I stated earlier, ROT is important to more than just motorcycle related businesses. As such, it’s become an institution and a prominent factor in stimulating Austin’s economy.”
What is your favorite part of ROT? “The day it ends. It’s a busy time.”
29
Selecting the proper motorcycle shop to fulfill a rider’s needs and tastes can be as personal as choosing a barber or bartender. Austin is home to many independent shops capable of providing excellent care for your twowheel treasure. Here we highlight four area businesses to better acquaint those attending ROT with the options available. So take some time out for a visit and drop a few dollars their way — either during the rally or on your next visit to Austin. They support “your” Rally so please, return the favor! (Always remember to call ahead to confirm shop hours.)
Cutting Edge SOUTHERN METAL CHOPPERS Bronson Willard 11116 Middle Fiskville Rd #E Austin, Texas 78753 512.833.5044 www.southernmetalcustomcycles.com Bronson Willard, owner of Southern Metal Choppers, states he “grew up on dirt bikes and 400 acres.” And since the nearest “town” was 50 miles away, he learned to repair things on his own. His first test on a large displacement motorcycle was a damaged 1992 FXR Harley. He was instantly bitten with the V-Twin bug, resulting in the opening of Southern Metal Choppers in 2003. He has been at this present location since ’06, working on all brands including sport bikes. The shop does its own motor and transmission work, frame modifications, in-house metal fabrication and machining, custom paint and fiberglass repair.
What do you consider the shop’s specialty?
“Our Saw-Zall.” (an industrial tool used to quickly cut through substantial metal)
What is your involvement with the Republic of Texas Rally? “We’ve been a vendor at the event since ’03 and were first invited to enter the Big Texas Chop-Off in ’08. I’ve built two bikes for the Rally’s Bagger Showcase and this year organized the first ever Vintage Bike Show being held in the Texas Thunderdome.”
Will the shop be open during ROT?
“No, we close the shop during the event but will have a display set up at the rally and hope everyone stops by for a visit.”
How important is the Republic of Texas Rally?
“ROT remains a vital factor in both the motorcycle industry and the Austin economy. Over the years as the rally has progressed, the promoters have continued to offer a changing variety of entertainment activities which helps the event consistently stay at the top of the biker ‘must-do’ calendar.”
What is your favorite part of ROT?
“Meeting all the people and displaying SMC merchandise.” Continued next page

Bare Bones Builder HARDTAILZ CHOPPERS 3601 W. Parmer Lane #105 Austin Texas 78727 512.219.6155 www.hardtailzchoppers.com Located in a small strip center just west of MOPAC, Hardtailz Choppers has called this shop home for four years. Owner of this one-man facility is Forrest Smith who has more than 30 years of experience in dealing with motorcycles beginning with motocross and then expanding into wrenching on his dad’s stable of two-wheel machines, mostly Panheads, Shovels and Knuckleheads. Working exclusively on HarleyDavidsons and American-Other V-Twins, Smith states that while Hardtailz is not a fancy shop, his “bare bones business always keeps the customer satisfied.” Hardtailz is also a dealer for most major custom V-Twin suppliers including Drag Specialties, S&S Cycle and Mid West Motorcycle Supply.
What do you consider the shop’s specialty?
“Although we do a little bit of everything, we specialize in motor work. Taking a stock bike and providing the customer what they want.”
What is your involvement with the Republic of Texas Biker Rally?
“My involvement with ROT is pretty new although I’ve attended the event for years. I hope to grow our relationship in the future so that it’s mutually beneficial to us both.”
Will the shop be open during ROT?
“Yes, we are open and usually slammed with business from tire replacement to maintenance to general repairs.”
How important is the Republic of Texas Rally?
“The Rally is great for my business since we’re normally swamped with customers. But it also has a trickle down effect for the local economy creating a major impact on all of Austin’s businesses.”
What is your favorite part of ROT?
“I enjoy visiting the Rally during the evening. That’s when I don’t have to worry about work and I can just relax and enjoy myself and the concerts.”

Four Leaf Performance SHAMROCK CYCLES 900 Pecan Street #200 Pflugerville, Texas 78660 512.228.2292 www.shamrockcyclestx.com Nick Ashcraft is a red-bearded giant who hails from New Mexico. His first shop was established in August 2005 and he just recently celebrated his one-year anniversary at his new location in Pflugerville. He works on Harleys and American V-Twins only and is qualified to perform H-D extended warranty work. He represents a number of aftermarket supply houses (Drag Specialties, etc.) while staying focused on only using American made parts whenever possible.
What do you consider the shop’s specialty? “Number one, motors. Complete motor work up to 131 cubic inch monsters. Second, fast turn around on most jobs.”
What is your involvement with the Republic of Texas Biker Rally? “Working with ROT has always been a goal of mine. It’s the biggest thing in South, so involvement is crucial to any Austin area bike shop. Along with supporting the event through advertising I hope to eventually host a ROT pre-party barbecue.”
Will the shop be open during ROT? “Oh yeah, we will be open. The days leading up to the rally, the four days of the rally and for a few days after everything shuts down — those are 15 hour days for me.”
How important is the Republic of Texas Rally? “ROT is the most important motorcycle event in Texas and a major player nationwide. It continues to be ranked as the top bike rally in the state and even took the crown away from South by Southwest (Austin’s premier music and film festival) a few years ago making ROT the biggest game in town.”
What is your favorite part of ROT? “The Friday night parade and the party on 6th. That’s a party that’s hard to beat.”

ROT Memorial Ride FOR FALLEN HEROES
ROT knows that bikers love to ride, and for the past 3 years the ROT Rally has put together some of the most memorable and meaningful rides for motorcycle enthusiasts. From shutting down IH-35 for over 30 miles through Austin for our police-escorted pack to hosting celebrity Dee Snider to champion our March of Dimes benefit ride, we are committed to bringing our rally-goers the best. And this year ROT has unveiled a new tradition in pre-rally rides, the *1st Annual ROT Memorial Ride for Fallen Heroes. Held the Wednesday before the ROT Rally begins, this ride honors lost loved ones who have served and protected in the many service organizations of this great country (including military, law enforcement, emergency and others) as well as those who are heroes to you (biker friends, family and ROT devotees alike). In addition to a full-day of festivities, ROT will continue to commemorate and recognize these brave friends on our jumbotron throughout the rally. So if you missed this year, plan ahead to participate next year and submit your fallen hero for recognition.

7:30 p.m. – Outdoor Amphitheater Striking like a flash of lightning out of the piney wood region of East Texas, Wes Jeans ranks as one of the “Top Young Gun Guitar Players” — Guitar Player Magazine, March 2004. Wes delivers a soul-drenched mix of high voltage, rockin’ Texas Blues. Wes commands the stage from the start to finish and opens with a spirit of intensity that will surely grab you with his grinding rhythms and stinging leads allowing you a deep look into Wes Jeans’ Marshall, TX roots.
Pat Travers Band 9:00 p.m. – Outdoor Amphitheater
Pat Travers Band is one tight rockin’ unit, and live they always deliver. There is an energy that is tangible, an enjoyment that is infectious, and you owe it to yourself to catch this band whenever and wherever you can.
Georgia Satellites 10:30 p.m. – Outdoor Amphitheater
Founded in 1985 by Rick Richards, Rick Price, singer Dan Baird and drummer Mauro Magellan, the Satellites quickly launched into stardom on the back of rockers like “Keep Your Hands to Yourself,” “Battleship Chains,” “Hippy Hippy Shake” and others. Critically acclaimed albums and mind-bending performances earned the boys a permanent spot in music history.
Taddy Porter
8:00 p.m. – Outdoor Amphitheater
Taddy Porter is Andy Brewer, Doug Jones, Kevin Jones and Joe Selby. Four young men, southern by birth, with a habit of rocking outright. The brothers Jones command a rhythmic Abrahams, devastating all in its path, steady on its brooding course, leaving a wrecked wake where the war was waged. All the while, Brewer and Selby man the cannons hurling shell after screeching shell of audio assault.
Eddie Money
9:40 p.m. – Outdoor Amphitheater Money’s blue-collar brand of Rock n Roll has managed to transcend generations and continues to move audiences today. Along with having sold more than 28 million records, Money’s songs have appeared in dozens of movies and television shows, and have recently been included in hit video games like “Grand Theft Auto” and “Guitar Hero.” Money continues to delight new and old fans alike at venues throughout the country. Having opened the summer concert season at the famous DTE Energy Music Theatre in Detroit for nearly 20 years, Money draws fans from all over who are eager to see the legendary musician. Ask any concert attendee and they’ll tell you he retains his signature style and performs with the same passion today as he did more than 30 years ago.

The Doobie Brothers
9:50 p.m. – O utdoor Amphitheater World Gone Crazy, The Doobie Brothers new release, is another chapter in one of the great American music stories — but it’s neither comeback nor nostalgia. An exhibition of aggressive and emotional performances, evocative storytelling, unapologetic attitude and world class musicianship, the collection is its own justification. Like the nation that spawned the many musical styles they’ve adopted, the Doobie Brothers’ deepest traditions are change, growth, striving and an abiding faith in the future. And so World Gone Crazy pays tribute to the Doobie Brothers legacy the most appropriate way possible . . . by moving resolutely forward.

TEXAS MOTORCYCLE LAWS
50
2011 Texas Motorcycle Laws By Robert Filla For all our out-of-state guests, the Republic of Texas Biker Rally wishes to send a hearty welcome and wish you safe riding while enjoying our great state. And for any riders unfamiliar with Texas motorcycle laws, here’s a quick rundown of current regulations. HELMETS: A DOT approved helmet is required for all motorcyclists. An exception to this stipulation exempts anyone 21 years and older from wearing a helmet if they have successfully completed a motorcycle operator training and safety course or they are covered by a health insurance plan. Proof of either is mandated by law but rarely requested by an officer. In addition, SB 1967 was signed into law in 2009 and reads, “A peace officer may not stop or detain a person who is the operator of or a passenger on a motorcycle for the sole purpose of determining whether the person has successfully completed the motorcycle operator training and safety course or is covered by a health insurance plan.” LICENSING: A Class M motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license is mandatory along with valid insurance and a current vehicle inspection sticker. A copy of your registration may go a long ways in avoiding prolonged roadside stops. EQUIPMENT: By state law, an operator cannot carry a passenger unless the bike is designed to carry more than one person, which means having both a passenger seat and passenger foot pegs. (Another new law that also went into effect in 2009 carries an age restriction, stating that no child under the age of five years old can ride on a motorcycle unless that child is seated in a sidecar. But that shouldn’t be a problem for Rally attendees since the Republic of Texas carries its own age restriction—18 and older only.) Texas designates that a bike may not be operated at any time unless at least one headlight is illuminated (except for bikes manufactured before 1975). Of course the bike must have both an operating taillight and brake light along with a horn. Side-mounted or vertical side-mounted license plates are generally not a cause for alarm while at least one mirror is mandatory. Texas law states “A motor vehicle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working condition that continually operates to prevent excessive or unusual noise”. But if you suppress any outbursts of “throttle fever,” drag pipes will rarely get you pulled over. BEHAVIOR: Safety and common sense is most imperative during the ROT Rally and burnouts, wheelies and other “stunts” will not be tolerated on any Austin city street. The Austin PD can be most friendly (especially during ROT). Let’s do our best to keep ‘em that way.
What’s 11 miles long, has more than one thousands wheels and is world famous? That would be the annual Republic of Texas Motorcycle Parade being held on Friday, June 10, 2011. It’s one of the most well attended bike parades in the world with thousands of riders making the event a priority during their ROT experience. For those who may have never joined in this unique affair, here are a few pointers. Staging for the parade begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening inside Gate #3 (refer to the Expo Center Map located in this guide). This year the Parade will depart at 7:45. Your time of arrival during staging will determine your placement in the procession. Many riders begin staging earlier than the scheduled time to secure a position at the front of the pack. The Parade departs the Travis County Expo Center and, using surface streets, eventually intersects I-35 South for a ride to downtown Austin where live music and vendors await. With thousands participating, the Parade has many stops and starts along the way and can easily take more than an hour to cover the 11-mile route. And with this many bikes creeping along in stop-and-go traffic, heat will be a factor with those riding further back in the motorcade suffering the greatest. There will be pre-Parade festivities at the staging area with the Bud girls handing out water and the Texas Party Pics crew on hand taking photos. The parade will be hot and staying well hydrated increases your reaction time while riding and expands your safety margin. And please be aware that during the 2011 ROT, Austin will be enforcing their “No Refusal Weekend” policy. (Under this provision if you get pulled over for possible DUI and you refuse a breath test, you will be forced to take a blood test to determine your blood alcohol level.) The best advice is to discontinue all alcohol consumption early in the day well before the Parade departure time. Although a helmet is not required for anyone over 21 that meets the State’s criteria for exemption (see Texas Motorcycle Laws elsewhere in this guide), if you are packing a young thang below that age, they best have DOT approved head gear in place. And although a full-face helmet provides the ultimate in protection, a half-helmet might be a better selection due to its superior ventilating properties. Make certain your partner is enough of a riding veteran that they don’t become a safety problem. A rookie passenger can be just as dangerous as a novice rider. Eye protection is not mandatory but it is highly advisable. Sunset in Austin on June 10th is at 8:32 p.m. And while that should allow sufficient light during the Parade for the use of dark riding shades, take along a pair of clears for your ride home after the 6th Street party. And while leather chaps are always fashionable, they will dramatically trap the heat raising body core temperatures. Leather jackets, if worn, should have all available vents fully open. Check your bike out before staging to be certain all your equipment is operating properly. A responsive brake system is vital during such an exercise but no more important than a functional brake light. Tires should be properly inflated and turn indicators will give those riding near you valuable information of your intentions beforehand—so use them. Just as indispensable, your mirrors are more than an attractive chrome accessory. Check them constantly to stay alert of the traffic around and behind you. Riding in such a stop-and-go situation will cause additional heat buildup in your engine. To help alleviate a dragging clutch due to excessive heat, slip the transmission into neutral when coming to a stop. So make certain you have plenty of petrol on board for an 11-mile, one-hour ride, tank up your body with a sufficient amount of water, and Parade safe. See ya on 6th Street.

A Texas Taste
Tradition
By Kayla Burns Floyd
Kreuz Market has been serving up the best in Texas BBQ since 1900. Famous for their no sauce, no forks, no frills philosophy, this central Texas establishment helped transform once-unknown Lockhart into the official BBQ Capitol of Texas, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world each year. What began as an old-fashioned meat market and grocery store over a century ago has now grown into the meat-lover’s mainstay for BBQ done right. Juicy beef brisket, pepper-encrusted pork ribs and spicy jalapeno cheese sausage links are fancied up only by the likes of pickles, German potatoes, homemade sauerkraut and other Kreuz “extras”. This Germanstyle barbeque restaurant proudly touts their traditional cooking methods and choice cuts of meat for achieving the flavor that is signature to only Kreuz Market. Even better news? This formerly cash-only joint now accepts credit cards and is just a short scenic ride from Austin. So grab your friends, hop on your bikes, and ride over to Kreuz Market where you’re guaranteed to get your hands dirty and make your taste buds happy with a pile of smoky, juicy, finger-licking-good Texas BBQ.

A Special Note from the Rally
速
速
速
For 2011, the Rally owners have dedicated a majority of their time developing a new line of ROT apparel which they hope will be well received and enjoyed by the Rally attendees and participants. The new ROT apparel for 2011 is American-made and sizing has been customized for a better fit. The fabric was chosen by the Rally owners, dyed, cut and sewn in the United States. The designs and logos have been screen printed with a soft hand plastisol or water base ink to create a lighter more flexible fabric which will provide an exceptionally comfortable fit for our customers. The entire creative process from the beginning to the end was closely monitored by the Rally owners. As a result of the quality of the cotton fabric selected and the current cost of cotton, the prices for ROT apparel items have increased on the average about $5.00 per item, but we hope our customers are happy with the newer and improved merchandise, and realize that this is the first price increase for ROT apparel since the ROT Biker Rally was established in 1995. The new apparel items can be purchased at the ROT Rally in the Covered Vendor Mall, the Registration Area and our downtown location located on Neches between 5th and 6th street. Purchases may be made online after June 8th at rotrally.com. Special thanks go out to OS Shirts, Inc for their patience and expertise shown to us during the entire process. Happy shopping and let us know what you think.
