With hundreds of species ranging from short shrubs to tall trees Holly (Ilux Aquifolium) is found primarily in North America, Europe and Asia. It is known for its bright crimson berries and prickly green leaves.
American Winter Berry (Ilex verticillata) is a species of holly native to eastern North America in the United States and southeast Canada — from Newfoundland west to Ontario and Minnesota, and south to Alabama. It is a shrub growing to 3 ft. -15 ft. tall. The leaves are typically glossy with serrated edges and pointed apex. The flowers are small with five to eight white petals. The red fruit persists on the branches long into the winter. The berries are an important food resource for numerous species of birds and were used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes. It is believed they coined the term"Fever Bush." American Winter Berry is a tough plant with very few diseases or pests. Although wet acidic soils are optimal, the Winter Berry will grow well in the average garden. Numerous cultivars are available, differing in size and shape of the plant and color of the berry. Like most hollies, the proximity of at least one male plant is required to pollenize the females in order to bear fruit.
Due to its ability to stay green through the harshest winter months, holly has deep-rooted symbolic links to life and hope. Ancient druids, Romans, Celts and even Asian cultures embraced holly as an important aspect of annual celebrations and cultural traditions. In many western cultures, holly is a traditional Christmas decoration, used especially in wreaths and flower arrangements.
American Winter Berry is known for its mid-winter splash of spectacular color from densely packed berries, whose visibility is heightened by the loss of foliage. The bare branches covered in berries are popular for use in floral arrangements and wreaths.
Many of the hollies are widely used as ornamental plants in gardens and parks. Several hybrids and numerous cultivars have been developed for garden use. Hollies are often used for hedges and take well to pruning and shaping.

Most hollies are evergreens that can thrive in the sunlight or the shade and the leaves are shiny with serrated edges. Hollies are dioecious, with male and female reproductive structures found on separate plants. Both male and female hollies bloom in late spring or early summer yielding white flowers — but only the females can produce berries. A male plant must be near a female plant for the process of pollination to take place. Insects, like bees, help cross-pollinate female hollies, transferring pollen from the male to the female plants.
