President’s Message It’s that special time in the air. The birds are singing. The weather is creeping around 80 degrees. And the Phoenix Film Festival is back. When we started this non-profit organization, we were a group of rebellious filmmakers looking to connect with an audience in the middle of the desert. It’s amazing to look back and see how much we’ve accomplished, thanks to the help of a whole lot of people. To make a festival work, you need three things: excellent films made by brilliant filmmakers (and we have a lot of them); passionate audience members who are eager to see interesting stories that challenge them artistically, intellectually, and emotionally; and the community Partners, Volunteers, and Sponsors who support the grand vision that keeps this organization running.

Thank you for being a part of our world. We do this because we want to make all of our lives artistically and culturally better. Independent film is the last original voice in the over-saturated mediadriven world we populate. To grow original voices, we’ve started many successful programs – IFP Phoenix, Phoenix Film Society, Arizona Student Film Festival and the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival. The ninth annual Phoenix Film Festival is our biggest event of the year, and the largest film festival in Arizona. If you love what we do, join us as we move forward, changing lives on a daily basis in any one of our programs. There is always room for one more on the bus. And in the immortal words of author Ken Kesey, “you’re either on the bus, or you’re off the bus.” Step right up and take a seat. The magic is happening now…

Chris LaMont President and Co-Founder Phoenix Film Foundation

Here we go again! Thank you for coming out to the 2009 Phoenix Film Festival. We’re very excited to share these great films and events with you. It has taken us the last eight months to get the Festival ready for our audience, and over the next eight days you’ll benefit from all that work. The Festival planning started way back in August of last year when we started accepting film submissions. We received over 900 submissions for this year with films from all over the world and of all different lengths. Our Viewing Committee and Program Directors worked tirelessly narrowing the film choices to the over 130 films you’ll see here at the Festival. First and foremost, I would like to thank our volunteers for their hard work. We have over 200 volunteers who have given up their time to help make this event happen. From our Executive Staff all the way down the line, our volunteers do amazing work. I’d also like to thank our Partners that make this event possible. From small to large we’re very appreciative to 4 | 9th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 2 - 9, 2009

have each and every one of them on board. Without the support of these corporations, the Phoenix Film Festival would not exist. Please support our Partners throughout the year; they chose to help us bring this event to you; please return the favor when you can. I would of course like to thank the filmmakers. There are hundreds of Festivals out there and over the last nine years, they have helped make the Phoenix Film Festival a premiere destination. This Festival was created to give them a stage to exhibit their art and they deliver each and every year. Please join me in congratulating them. Most of all, I would like to thank you for choosing to join us this year. This week you’ll be part of the Film Festival Community and there’s nothing like the energy of the Phoenix Film Festival. The coming together of filmmakers and film fans is a great experience. As our eight months of planning come to fruition, I hope you have a great time. The next eight days are my favorite time of the year. Have a great time.

Film Festival 101 So I’m At The Film Festival, Now What? Congratulations, you’ve taken the first critical step to Film Festival-ing, you have a program! This is your Festival GPS and will be your guide as you learn all about the Phoenix Film Festival. There are a couple of requirements for Festival attendees. The first is that you like movies, although it’s even better if you love movies. The second requirement is… well actually there’s really only one requirement. So if you’ve made it this far, you’re going to do just fine. So get your favorite beverage and a tub of popcorn, because here we go… PRE-FESTIVAL PLANNING

Preparation and planning are the keys to making your film festival experience a big success. You’ve got this program so you’re on track. Crack open the middle of this program and use the schedule to plan your Festival trip. There’s plenty to see and eight days to see it. There are plenty of routes to take. See a feature film, see some short films, catch a seminar, see a World Cinema film and of course don’t miss the parties. You can either plan ahead and choose all your films up front or just fly by the seat of your pants and pick your movies as you go. Everyone has their own method to their movie madness. Different strokes for different folks. WHERE DO I STAND TO GET IN?

The type of Pass you have determines what line you wait in, and if you’ve got one of those classy Patron Passes there is a special line that gets you into every screening first. Don’t worry, Festival Pass holders, you’re next in line. Then the Single Ticket Line enters the theatre. You are guaranteed a seat with a ticket, but remember the earlier you get in line, the better seat you get! GET YOUR TICKETS BEFORE They’re GONE

Remember that part in the last paragraph about being guaranteed a seat? Tickets to various screenings go fast! Don’t be that guy (or girl) that gets shut out of the movie they’re excited to see - so whatever level of pass you have – you need a ticket FOR EACH

SHOW. Sometimes it pays to be the organized planning everything out person. Go see Dana Lane, the Queen of Screen, at the Welcome Center – and she will hook you up. Tell her The Program sent you. CAN I UPGRADE MY PASS TO GET IN THE BETTER LINE?

Yes. Go to Welcome Center. Pay more money. Get better pass. Must use subjective nouns. WHAT IS THE MOVIE I MUST SEE?

Our Programmers have whittled down the films to 130 films, and they’ve done their best to give you a wide variety. Try a little bit of everything. Parachute out of your comfort zone into a film you wouldn’t usually go to. A film festival is perfect for that! Make a new best friend in line and see what they’ve liked. Odds are pretty good you might like it too. IS IT JUST MOVIES?

No way. We’ve got plenty of cool stuff. There are workshops, seminars, celebrity appearances, the silent auction, the parties every night, all the premieres, the bands, the music, the conversation, the popcorn and so much more! Do it all! In nine years, we’ve created the Film Party of the Year. FILMMAKERS ARE PEOPLE TOO!

The Festival would be a bunch of you sitting in a theatre watching a dull white screen and watching the ads from all the community partners if it weren’t for the people who actually MAKE THE MOVIES. Filmmakers love to talk! Especially about their movies!

8 | 9th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 2 - 9, 2009

So talk them up, buy them a tasty beverage and indulge in the sheer joy of filmmaking. At least ask them a question during the Q & A’s after the film! THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE FESTIVAL

The Festival is run nearly entirely by volunteers. Make sure to take good care of them and they’ll take care of you. Be sure to show your appreciation, they do amazing things to put this Festival together and without them it wouldn’t be nearly as cool. THE FESTIVAL IS FOR THE COOL CROWD

Those uneducated masses who don’t know the sweet time we have here? Let them know that you are one of the cool people – have them show up tomorrow. Or next year. And don’t forget, you have bragging rights when that film you saw here shows up at Harkins Theatres– so boast and maybe buy a shirt or hat and rub it in!

Phoenix Film Festival Guests Bill Engvall From humble beginnings in Galveston, Texas, Bill Engvall discovered his talent for stand-up comedy while planning on being a schoolteacher. A trip to Hollywood led Bill to appearances on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Night with David Letterman.” In 1992, he won the American Comedy Award for “Best Male Stand-up Comedian.” Between stand-up appearances he appeared on “Delta” with Delta Burke and as Jeff’s best friend on “The Jeff Foxworthy Show.” He landed on the WB network in 2004 as one of the stars of the sketch comedy show “Blue Collar TV,” which launched Comedy Central’s “The Blue Collar Comedy Tour, The Movie”, the mostwatched movie in the network’s history. Its’ sequel was the third-highest watched movie on the network, and he has since performed top-rated comedy stand-up specials with one of his comedy DVDs gone platinum in sales. His success has given Bill the opportunity to make comedy films such as “Delta Farce” with Larry the Cable Guy and “Bait Shop” with Billy Ray Cyrus. He currently stars on “The Bill Engvall Show” on TBS, one of the top-three watched sitcoms of all time on cable which was recently renewed for its’ third season. Besides his television work, he continues to make movies, will be seen later this year in All’s Faire in Love with Christina Ricci, and is interested in making movies in Arizona. Mr. Engvall is representing the Arizona short comedy film Cowboy Dreams, from Phoenix filmmakers Paul DeNigris and Steven Briscoe, in which he stars with Danny Trejo.

Virginia Madsen Few actresses in Hollywood can equal the talent and beauty of Virginia Madsen. She honed her young acting skills with her actor brother Michael Madsen at family gatherings, and after high school attended the Ted Liss Acting Studio in Chicago and the Harand Camp Adult Theatre in Wisconsin before moving to Hollywood. She burst on the scene in the 1983 teen comedy Class with Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy and Jacqueline Bissett, and cemented her acting status in 1984 as Princess Irulan in David Lynch’s Dune. Her film work in the 1980s and 90’s ranged from the horror film Candyman, to The Hot Spot, The Prophecy, Ghosts of Mississipppi, John Grisham’s The Rainmaker, and The Haunting. She also took some well-deserved time to raise her son Jack. In the new millennium, her star rose again with her Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated role in Alexander Payne’s hit film Sideways, Firewall with Harrison Ford, and The Number 23 with Jim Carrey. Her current projects include starring in the soon-to-be-released The Haunting in Connecticut and in Amelia with Oscar winner Hillary Swank and Richard Gere, and she has started Title IX Productions to develop her own projects, such as the new documentary I Know A Woman Like That. Ms. Madsen will appear at the Phoenix Film Festival in support of I Know A Woman Like That, the documentary she produced about extraordinary women ages 64 to 94, directed by her mother Elaine Madsen.

12 | 9th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 2 - 9, 2009

Phoenix Film Festival Guests Johnathon Schaech This gifted actor has been working in Hollywood since 1993 and has shown his versatility by focusing on screenplay writing and producing. His acting credits include such films as the memorable How to Make an American Quilt, his breakout role in Tom Hanks’ That Thing You Do!, Hush, After Sex, Sea of Dreams, 2006 Phoenix Film Festival Best Picture Winner Little Chenier, the new thriller Quarantine and the big studio remake of Prom Night. Between acting roles, he also has started writing, including the upcoming films The Hour Before Dark and Black House. Recently he has started working with author Stephen King, producing and writing an adaptation of “From a Buick 8.” Mr. Schaech is appearing at the 2009 Phoenix Film Festival supporting his film “The Poker Club” in which he stars and also wrote.

Amy Smart One of Hollywood’s popular actresses, Amy was born in Topanga, California where she studied ballet, acting classes and did fashion modeling across the world before she turned eighteen. The acting bug continued to bite, and she appeared in short films and supporting roles until her breakthrough role as Jules in Varsity Blues. Since then, she has appeared in an eclectic mixture of big studio and small independent films that have showed her remarkable range. Her Hollywood work includes the wacky Road Trip, The Butterfly Effect with Ashton Kutcher, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson’s Starsky & Hutch, Just Friends with Ryan Reynolds, Keifer Sutherland’s thriller Mirrors, the Jason Statham’s high-octane Crank and will be reprising her role in the upcoming Crank: High Voltage. Her independent films include Project Greenlight’s The Battle for Shaker Heights with Shia LeBeouf, Bigger than the Sky with John Corbet and Sean Astin, Peaceful Warrior with Nick Nolte and the 2008 Tribeca premiere Life in Flight. Ms. Smart is appearing at the 2009 Phoenix Film Festival to support her latest film, the romantic drama, Love N’ Dancing.

Morgan Spurlock It’s not possible to think about eating a Big Mac without your thoughts wandering towards independent filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. His Oscar-nominated Super Size Me was an international hit, but how he got there reveals the passion and determination he has for social and cultural causes. The idea for Super Size Me came when he saw a news story about two girls who blamed fast-food giant McDonalds for their obesity. it led him to conduct a video experiment where he ate nothing but food from the McDonald’s menu for 30 days. After Super Size Me’s Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature, he launched the FX television series 30 Days, which has been renewed for its’ third season. Like Super Size Me, he immerses himself and others in social situations that Spurlock feels strongly about. His latest feature length documentary Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? follows Spurlock as he travels the Middle East exploring the fight against terrorism from both sides. Mr. Spurlock is appearing at the 2009 Phoenix Film Festival in support of the documentary, Hi, My Name is Ryan, Directed by Paul Eagleston and Stephen Rose, which follows the outrageous life of performance artist and Phoenix native Ryan Avery. www.phxfilm.com | 13

22 | 9th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 2 - 9, 2009

Who says you can’t hip-hop dance if you’re 80-years-old? Who says your days as a performer are long gone? Who says you can’t shake things up and light up a jam-packed sports arena with your hot dance moves and cool attitude? Just because you’re a card-carrying member of AARP, do you have to give up on your dreams? No. You don’t. Absolutely not. Gotta Dance, a coming-of-age dance feature, chronicles the debut of the New Jersey Nets first-ever senior citizen hip-hop dance team - 12 women and 1 man - all dance team newbies, from auditions and rehearsal through to center court stardom. Despite swollen ankles, exhausting rehearsals, hip-hop phobia and seemingly impossible dance steps, the NETSational Seniors go for it, spreading joy, inspiration and cool dance moves as they hip-hop their way into the hearts of Nets fans and beyond. As their smooth dance moves are perfected and performed in front of tens of thousands of screaming fans, aging myths and misperceptions are pulverized.

Five peoples’ fates become entwined when a soldier returns on furlough from Iraq. With no one to greet him at the airport, he sets out for the wild Northwest coast. His journey intersects with his distant father, his un-met step-mother, a bitter veteran, and the stewardess from his connection home. As each strays further from his everyday life and a body washes up on the beach, their fates become bound inextricably together. A newfound sense of belonging is forged and, finally, the soldier has something to come back to; now he must return to the real and present war.

When Andrew meets Jenny, caught in Barstow on her way to LA, his reasons for staying grow stronger, but his bond with Sandra begins to fray. In spite of encouragement from friend Carlos and mentor Mr. Johns, Andrew finds inertia all too easy to rationalize. As Andrew’s loyalties become confused, his opportunities seem to fade until he realizes he must choose between those who need him and starting his own life elsewhere.

Shooting Beauty Directed by: George Kachadorian ariZona Premiere Run Time: 62 minutes Cast: Courtney Brent and Tony Knight Screening Times: Friday, April 3rd at 7:45pm Saturday, April 4th at 2:30pm Sunday, April 5th at 10:00am Emmy-nominated filmmaker George Kachadorian brings us the story of Courtney Bent, a twenty-something fashion photographer whose career takes an unexpected turn when she is befriended by a group of people living with severe cerebral palsy and other disabilities. Although most have extremely limited mobility and speech, Courtney soon discovers that their minds are vibrant and keenly observant. When she begins inventing camera systems to allow her new friends access to photography and video, the images that come back draw her into their hidden world of romance and daring, loss and laughter-- and a unique relationship begins that will stretch over a decade. We meet EJ, a self described ‘bad dude’ who, despite being able to use only his tongue, tackles Boston drivers head-on. Cheryl, a romantic who feels trapped in a body nobody will ever love — or will they? Tony, who uses his photos as a platform for social change. And Tom, whose breathtaking emergence from a life of near total isolation and despair is a testament to the healing power of art. Courtney and her photographers must overcome physical barriers, a skeptical public, and even death as they work to achieve their dream of creating a traveling public exhibit of their work. Shot over a period of ten years with ground breaking access to the subjects’ internal emotional lives, this film is guaranteed to challenge audiences to rethink what they thought they knew about people living with disabilities — and what it means to be human.

The Way We get By Directed by: Aron Gaudet ariZona Premiere www.thewaywegetbymovie.com Run Time: 84 minutes Screening Times: Friday, April 3rd at 12:00pm Saturday, April 4th at 4:40pm Sunday, April 5th at 2:00pm Inside a small airport in central Maine, a group of senior citizens are making history by using handshakes and hugs to play a critical role in the Iraq war. The Way We Get By is an inspirational story about how these handshakes can change a person’s life. Since March 2003, over 800,000 soldiers and Marines from across the country have been greeted at the Bangor International Airport. With each flight, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, these volunteers have been there to send them off and welcome them home. The Way We Get By follows three senior citizens, Bill Knight, Joan Gaudet and Jerry Mundy as they battle with the critical issues common to the nation’s ever-growing aging population. Through their candid and moving stories, viewers are provided with a truthful look at what millions of Americans are facing across the country.

Jolene follows a young girl on her quest to find herself as she passes through a series of relationships, adventures and misfortunes which take her across America.

A young woman moves to Chicago to start a new life where she meets a suicidal hit man and a worn, alcoholic detective.

A couple celebrates their anniversary with friends and family, but as they wait for a guest to show, it is clear that the night is not shaping up to be what they expected.

In this musical film, Timothy stumbles upon a love potion while preparing for his high school play and he creates a fantasy dream world where most of the town is gay.
