President’s Message In the year 2000, there was this crazy dream to mount a world-class film festival in Phoenix. There had never been an event like it before in the Valley of the Sun - an event that would truly celebrate independent filmmaking with major partners, celebrities, a dedicated staff and incredible attendance. It’s been the road less traveled, but here we are at the milestone of the 10th Anniversary of the Phoenix Film Festival. Reality has surpassed the dream. Ten years have gone by and the vision continues to grow – an opportunity for bigger audiences to find special films that touch them emotionally, intellectually and spiritually, and educational forums designed to teach students of all ages to find their authentic creative voices through the art of the motion picture. This 10th Annual event wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the contributions of thousands of people, everyone who helped make the one thousand-plus films screened along the way, the

thousands of volunteers who have lent their valuable time and resources, the multitude of individuals from wonderful partner organizations across the world who believe that the Phoenix Film Festival is an important part of our cultural landscape and have done what they could to keep the dream alive, and the over two hundred thousand attendees that have supported all of our events through the past decade. We wouldn’t have such diverse organizations and events as IFP Phoenix, the Phoenix Film Society, the Arizona Student Film Festival, the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival and the granddaddy of them all, where we are at right now, if it wasn’t for all of you. Thanks for ten years of laughter, tears, applause, excitement and memories and I hope you join us as we continue our move into the future. It just goes to show – if you’re going to dream, dream big.
Chris LaMont President and Co-Founder Phoenix Film Foundation
A Word From Our Director Time flies…Welcome to the 10th Anniversary of the Phoenix Film Festival. We’re grateful that you have joined us for this year’s event. We’ve been working for nearly a year to make this Festival a special one to mark this anniversary. In 2001, I didn’t even know what a film festival was all about when my friend Greg Hall asked me to come out and lend a hand. I thought maybe I might come help out for a few hours and then be done with it. Within an hour of showing up I was hooked and ended up working the entire festival. Here we are ten years later and I’m still hooked on film festivals. I hope after experiencing this year’s Festival you will also have that appreciation. We would like to thank our volunteers who make the festival happen. We appreciate them giving up their time to help us produce this event. Our volunteer team leaders on the Executive Staff do an amazing job every year in assembling their teams.

I’d also like to thank our Partners that make this event possible. The companies behind the logos you see within this program are crucial to making this event a success. When you leave the festival, please remember them and support their businesses all year-round. Over the last ten years we’ve had so many great films and we’ve gotten to know the filmmakers behind them. They put their heart and souls into their art and we’re honored that they allow us to show their films. Some festivals forget the most important part of a film festival is the films. Please join us in thanking them for bringing their films to Phoenix. Finally, I would like to thank you for choosing to join us this year. Last year we were named one of the Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the country and our audiences are an important part of that. Have a great time.

About Dan Harkins
Dan Harkins Owner and CEO His mother and father lived in a studio apartment attached to the projection booth of a movie theatre when he was born. He was raised in a movie theatre and eventually married in a movie theatre. Along the way, he worked every job in the theatre, from janitor to doorman to projectionist. You might say Dan Harkins has show business in his blood. The story of how Harkins Theatres grew from a single movie house in Tempe to the Southwest’s largest independent exhibition company begins with Dan’s father, Dwight “Red” Harkins. In 1933 at the height of the Depression, Red opened Tempe Arizona’s first movie house, The State Theatre. By 1973, Red had built a chain of five movie theatres throughout the Valley. In 1974, Red passed away leaving his oldest son Dan, a junior at ASU and General Manager of the chain, as head of the family business. Although Dan was only 21, Red had taught him well. With a lifetime of experience in the theatre business, and an enthusiasm for the growth and change that was taking place around Phoenix, Dan was ready to build on his father’s legacy. Over the next three decades, Dan dedicated himself to two goals; expanding the Harkins business and enhancing the movie-going experience. Harkins Theatres began buying other local theatre chains, steadily increasing their number of screens. Once purchased, the theatres would be completely upgraded with state-of-the-art amenities. Harkins Theatres would become known for its innovative programming, digital sound systems, plush rocking chair seats, neon lobbies, and signature gourmet snack bars. But for all the growth and modernization he inspired, Dan never forgot the magic of movies. During the 70’s and 80’s, Dan always looked for ways to make moviegoing an event. His introduction of midnight movies, conducting the world’s longest-running 3D film festival (over a year) and creation of the revolutionary Loyalty Cup and T-shirt program are just a few examples of how Dan quickly became an industry trailblazer by thinking outside of the box. He didn’t stop there. In order to expand the variety of films available to local movie connoisseurs, he created Arizona’s first foreign and art film program, a Harkins tradition that continues to this day. The renovated Valley Art Theatre and the Camelview are dedicated to showing these special releases. Over the years, Dan has built a reputation as a leader and innovator, both in the theatre industry and the 6 | 10th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 8 - 15, 2010
local community. He is an unprecedented three-time recipient of the nationally coveted Showman of the Year award. The American Institute of Architects awarded Dan the 1996 Community Vision award. He’s also received the 1998 Arizona Business Leadership award for outstanding leadership and corporate growth and the 1999 Entrepreneur of the Year award. But perhaps more important to Dan are the awards his theatres garner from Arizona moviegoers: Best Place to Watch a Movie, Best Programming and Best Movie Snacks, to name a few. Harkins’ leadership and creativity goes beyond the world of movies. Over the past 20 years, Harkins Theatres has helped set a new standard for charitable giving in the Western U.S. through charity benefit premieres and screenings, souvenir and holiday gift sales and public service announcements on the movie screens. The company has helped many schools and organizations raise millions of dollars. Harkins Theatres has worked with dozens of groups, including Boys & Girls Clubs in Metro Phoenix, Oklahoma City and Denver, March of Dimes, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Alzheimer’s Association, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, The Children’s Center in Oklahoma City, The Humane Society and many more. Today, Harkins Theatres is over 400 screens strong and growing. With annual attendance exceeding the capacity of Arizona’s top 25 venues combined, Harkins is the Southwest’s first choice for entertainment. Father and son have come a long way since Red opened that first theatre in Tempe. And they’re not done yet.

Film Festival 101 Film Festival 101 – The 10th Anniversary Edition Hello and Welcome! You are now officially a festival-goer. Welcome to our exclusive club. Now that you’re one of us we’re going to give you some tricks on how to make the most of your festival experience. So get out your secret decoder rings, it’s time to learn about this year’s soonto-be legendary Phoenix Film Festival… First off, get yourself an ice-cold beverage and delicious popcorn from the Harkins concession stand.
PRE-FESTIVAL PLANNING Preparation and planning are the keys to making your film festival experience a big success. You’ve got this program so you’re on track. Crack open the middle of this program and use the schedule to plan your Festival trip. There’s plenty to see and eight days to see it. There are plenty of routes to take. See a feature film, see some short films, catch a seminar, see a World Cinema film and of course don’t miss the parties. You can either plan ahead and choose all your films up front or just fly by the seat of your pants and pick your movies as you go. Or just close your eyes and randomly pick a film. Everyone has their own method to their movie madness.
WHERE DO I STAND TO GET IN? The type of Pass you have determines what line you wait in, and if you’ve got one of those fancy Platinum or VIP Passes there is a special line that gets you into every screening first. Don’t worry, Festival Pass holders, you’re next in line. Then the Flex Pass and Single Ticket Line enters the theatre. You are a guaranteed a seat with a ticket, but remember the earlier you get in line, the better seat you get. Don’t forget the golden rule, no saving seats!
see - so whatever level of pass you have – you need a ticket FOR EACH SHOW. Sometimes it pays to be the organized planning everything out person. Go see Dana Lane, the Queen of Screen, at the Ticket Center – and she will hook you up. Tell her The Program sent you.
CAN I UPGRADE MY PASS TO GET IN THE BETTER LINE? Yes. Go to Welcome Center. Pay more money. Get better pass. Must use subjective nouns.
WHAT IS THE MOVIE I MUST SEE? All of them. Good luck with that. Our Programmers have whittled down the films to 130 films, and they’ve done their best to give you a wide variety. Try a little bit of everything. Variety is the spice of life and at the film festival it tastes delicious. Talk to your fellow festival attendees in line and see what they’ve liked. Odds are pretty good you might like it too.
IS IT JUST MOVIES? No way. We’ve got plenty of cool stuff. There are workshops, seminars, celebrity appearances, the silent auction, the parties every night, all the premieres, the bands, the music, the conversation, the popcorn and so much more! Do it all! It’s the 10th Anniversary, live it up!
GET YOUR TICKETS BEFORE They’re GONE
FILMMAKERS DON’T BITE
Remember that part in the last paragraph about being guaranteed a seat? Tickets to various screenings go fast! Don’t be that guy (or girl) that gets shut out of the movie they’re excited to
Well some of them do, but generally they’re a great bunch of people. The special thing about seeing a film at a film festival is you get to hear about how the film was made. Filmmakers love to talk
20 | 10th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 8 - 15, 2010
about their movies. Just ask them. So talk them up, buy them a tasty beverage and indulge in the sheer joy of filmmaking. At least ask them a question during the Q & A’s after the film!
THE GAS THAT MAKES THE FESTIVAL GO The Festival is run nearly entirely by volunteers. Be sure to take good care of them and they’ll take care of you. Be sure to show your appreciation, they do amazing things to put this Festival together and without them it wouldn’t be nearly as cool.
ALL THE COOL KIDS COME TO THE FILM FESTIVAL Anyone that knows anything about film should be here at the Film Festival. If you know one that isn’t, be sure to brag about what a great time you had. It’s always fun to rub it in. Plus when you see these movies in the theatre later on you can tell everyone you saw it at the Phoenix Film Festival first. Don’t forget to pick up a hat or shirt to show off that you were there when the Phoenix Film Festival made history.

Screening Times: Friday, April 9th at 1:00pm Saturday, April 10th at 3:00pm Sunday, April 11th at 12:05pm Forty year old Devin Dearth is a successful businessman, loving husband, father of three, and champion bodybuilder. He and his family reside in the small community of Central City, Kentucky where they live the picture book “American Dream”. That is until Devin suffers a devastating stroke which leaves him paralyzed on his right side, unable to walk, with difficulty speaking, double vision and unable to care for himself or his family. As Devin moves from ICU to in-patient rehabilitation, and eventually into home care; he and his family quickly discover the confines of the American health care system. Due to the lack of resources, both financial and in scope of care; Devin’s window for recovery begins to close. In search of an answer, Devin’s brother Doug proposes they travel to Tianjian, China, to participate in a stroke rehabilitation program. The program integrates Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine to successfully treat stroke victims and is both affordable and promising. They decide to take the leap. Upon landing in China, there is an aura of determination and surrender surrounding Devin as he is immediately immersed into a treatment program and philosophy like nothing he has ever known. Until now his challenges had seemed greater than his will; but now, with this new team of compassionate and mysterious medical alchemists, they no longer seem insurmountable. We follow Devin on this unconventional journey, where his courage, faith, patience, and desire to overcome are tested on a daily basis.
9500 Liberty Directed by: Eric Byler & Annabel Park Run Time: 1 hr. 21 min. Screening Times: Friday, April 9th at 3:30pm Saturday, April 10th at 7:40pm Sunday, April 11th at 10:00am In July of 2007, Prince William County, Virginia became “ground zero” in America’s explosive battle over immigration policy when elected officials adopted a law requiring police officers to question anyone they thought was “probably” undocumented. 9500 Liberty reveals the startling vulnerability of a local government targeted by national anti-immigration networks using the Internet to frighten and intimidate lawmakers and citizens. Alarmed by a climate of fear and racial division, residents form a resistance using YouTube videos and virtual town-halls and set up a real-life showdown in the seat of county government. The devastating social and economic impact of the “Immigration Resolution” is felt in the lives of real people, in homes, and in local businesses. But the ferocious fight to adopt and then reverse this policy unfolds inside government chambers, on the streets, and on the Internet. 9500 Liberty provides a front row seat to all three battlegrounds.

The picture dramatizes the ill-fated courtship between two melancholic heroin addicts-Gulf War veteran Bayliss and ex-stripper Froggy as they fall in love and battle magnetizing addictions. The possibility of redemption waxes strong from time to time, with hope for some semblance of a “normal life” lingering quietly in the background, but Bayliss and Froggy never quite seem to find the strength and control to pull everything together. In the end, they join one another on a downward spiral that leads inexorably toward mutual self-destruction.

Matt has his own demons to contend with as he battles depression and a universal fear of simply being too old to make it in an industry that thrives on youth. Eventually, Jay’s fierce commitment to his music begins to take a toll on his family. He is ultimately faced with having to make a decision whether to say goodbye to one part of his life or begin a new journey with the other.

Enter Jeffie: an inflammatory individual who fancies himself a scholar, a poet, and the embodiment of enlightened living. Jeffie is not at all the fresh-faced smiling twenty-something that his internet photo depicted. He rolls into the couple’s life as a wheelchair-bound veteran with severe motion sickness and treats them to repeated listens of his demo tape of radical political and environmental opinions. At first, the couple’s travel companion seems to have responded randomly to their ad, but as the trip progresses, it becomes clear that Jeffie’s presence relates to a web of tightly-held secrets between Alan and Amanda. Amidst infidelity, blackmail, and run-ins with the law; the ride with Jeffie is unpredictable at every turn and by journey’s end no one is left unchanged.

Feature-Length Film competition NONAMES Directed by: Kate Lindboe Run Time: 1 hr. 48 min. Cast: James Badge Dale, Gillian Jacobs Screening Times: Friday, April 9th at 5:00pm Saturday, April 10th at 12:20pm Sunday, April 11th at 2:20pm NONAMES is a fact-based drama about Kevin Williams (James Badge Dale) and his childhood friends; a group of 20-somethings stuck in a state of arrested development in a dried up Midwestern town. After his mother’s death, Kevin decides to make a life for himself in his childhood home despite his father’s decision to move. In the wake of tragedy, Kevin must end his extended adolescence or lose all that he holds most dear. Haunted by unsettled scores, it becomes clear that he must leave the town he loves in order to save himself from it. A new beginning is only a bus ride away. Shot on location in Central Wisconsin, NONAMES focuses on the experiences of this group of friends growing up together, while painting a subtle picture of small town life. Showcasing performances of up-and-coming actors James Badge Dale (HBO’s The Pacific; AMC’s Rubicon) and Gillian Jacobs (NBC’s Community), introducing a talented ensemble cast, and featuring a poignant supporting performance by veteran actor Barry Corbin; NONAMES is a beautiful coming of age drama about family, friends, and the definition of home.
The rivals Directed by: Kirk Wolfinger Run Time: 88 min. Cast: Aaron Filieo, James Aylward Screening Times: Friday, April 9th at 8:15pm Saturday, April 10th at 11:15am Sunday, April 11th at 2:05pm The Rivals is a story of ‘haves’ versus ‘have-nots’ and two towns in Maine that both resent and respect each other. Rumford is a blue-collar town in the rugged Western mountains, supported by a dying paper mill that is losing jobs almost daily. Cape Elizabeth is a wealthy, coastal paradise for doctors, lawyers, and type-A personalities. Residents of these two towns only meet in one place: the High School Football field. Rumford’s team has won 6 conference and 2 state championships in the last 20 years. Cape Elizabeth’s team is only three years old, but the town has so much money and drive that they are threatening Rumford’s football dynasty. The rivalry is personified in the two coaches: Rumford’s legendary Jim Aylward vs. Cape Elizabeth’s fiery young Aaron Filieo. For Filieo’s Cape kids, the future is bright and the new Astro-turf is always green. Football is one of many distractions in a well-funded school respected for its academic excellence. Filieo must inspire privileged kids to fight for something that doesn’t come easily. Aylward wants to give his Rumford kids something to be proud of before they enter the workday grind of life in a struggling mill town. He inspires them with his tough love and messages of hope, focus and respect. This is more than a sports film. Football is the crucible in which life lessons of class and pride and perseverance are learned and fought over...lessons that will last a lifetime. www.phxfilm.com | 39
Feature-Length Film competition The Scenesters Directed by: Todd Berger Run Time: 1 hr. 36 min. Cast: Blaise Miller, Suzanne May Screening Times: Friday, April 9th at 1:40 P.M. Saturday, April 10th at 1:50 P.M. Sunday, April 11th at 2:35 P.M. An innovative and quirky murder mystery that both honors and deconstructs the conventions of the classic ‘who-done-it?’ film noir. A dark comedy that uses the ‘found footage’ approach to storytelling, the film compiles supposed ‘real’ clips from a variety of sources courtroom transcripts, crime scene videography, news reports, etc - all detailing how a group of Los Angeles twenty-somethings got mixed up in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with a prolific serial killer. The film’s soundtrack (and plot) features indie-rock favorites The Airborne Toxic Event, The Cribs, The Sonics, Wallpaper, Le Switch, and many, many more.
True Adolescents Directed by: Craig Johnson Run Time: 1 hr. 28 min. Cast: Bret Loehr, Carr Thompson Screening Times: Friday, April 9th at 11:30am Saturday, April 10th at 4:15pm Sunday, April 11th at 12:00pm Seattle rocker Sam Bryant can’t seem to get a @#$%ing break. His band, ‘The Effort’, is going nowhere fast and his girlfriend has just kicked him out of her apartment leaving him homeless and broke. After a rough night on the town, he’s taken in by his sympathetic aunt Sharon who lives in the cul-de-sac suburbs with her 14-year-old son, Oliver. Sharon proposes one condition for harboring Sam: he get a day job. When it becomes clear that Sam’s job search is half-assed at best, Sharon requests a favor: that he accompany Oliver and his best friend Jake on a camping trip that Oliver’s dad was originally intended to chaperone. Sam balks initially, but, after a guilt-induced change of heart, he agrees to take the boys, determined to show them the time of their lives. So begins the journey into the rugged outdoors with a cocky 34-year-old rocker leading the way, followed by the adventurous but brooding Oliver and the smart but sensitive Jake. At first the trip is a fun, free-wheeling, men-vs.-nature affair complete with poker games, skinny-dipping and pool-side makeouts with vacationing girls. But after a practical joke goes wrong and one of the boys goes missing, Sam must play the adult, for the first time in his life, to ensure the trio arrive home in one piece. 40 | 10th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 8 - 15, 2010

Showcase Feature Films Against the current Directed by: Directed by Peter Callahan Run Time: 99 minutes Screening Time: Friday, April 9th at 7:00pm Cast: Joesph Finnes, Justin Kirk, Elizabeth Reaser, Mary Tyler Moore, Michelle Trachtenberg In this independent drama from writer and director Peter Callahan, Joseph Fiennes stars as Paul, a writer and finance expert who approaches his best friend Jeff (Justin Kirk) with an unusual proposal. When they were kids, Paul and Jeff talked about one day swimming the Hudson River from Manhattan to Troy, New York, a stretch of 150 miles. Paul has decided he’s going to do it, and wants like Jeff to join him, suggesting he follow along in a boat and provide support when it’s needed. Paul is puzzled but agrees, and his friend Liz (Elizabeth Reaser) tags along for the ride. But in time Jeff realizes that the final day of Paul’s carefully scheduled big swim coincides with the fifth anniversary of the death of Paul’s pregnant wife, and Jeff fears that his friend has more in mind than a challenge to himself. Appearances from Michelle Trachtenberg and Mary Tyler Moore round out an excellent ensemble cast. Set against the backdrop of the Hudson River Valley in summertime, Against the Current explores the dark landscape of life after loss, and delivers a strong finale sure to stay with you long after the film’s conclusion. Against The Current received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

In 1888, Hawai‘i was a paradise teetering on the brink of civil unrest. The tide had turned against the long-incumbent royal family, under the malevolent influence of a rebel party with links to the American government. Within months, the Palace was overthrown and the royals exiled. Among them was the beautiful Princess Kaiulani. Scarcely 13 years old, she was separated from her family and her homeland and for her own safety, sent to a climate and a country that couldn’t be more different from Hawai‘i - Victorian England. Coming to terms with her fate, Kaiulani underwent a harsh and testing education that equipped her with a sense of honor, duty and pride. What’s more, she fell in love, with the spirited and rebellious young Englishman Clive Davies. Emerging from her childhood and inspired by her blossoming romance, Kaiulani realized she had to bring an end to the injustices suffered by her people and set sail for America to meet President Grover Cleveland, to prove that she and her people were not the “barbarians” portrayed by the American press. Princess Kaiulani combines the profound natural beauty of Hawai‘i with the sweeping romance of a classic Merchant Ivory epic.

Fisher has it pretty good living rent-free in exchange for taking care of a church and teaching kids to play soccer. But Fisher has a drinking problem. Suddenly, Fisher’s old friend, Pete, shows up looking for some dude consolation after his girlfriend cheats on him. Too bad he looks for it in Fisher because not even hot “cougars” and bad advice can make Pete happy. What Pete needs is for Fisher to realize that they aren’t teenagers anymore. And that’s when Pete’s girlfriend shows up with some truth he sorely needs. In One Too Many Mornings, director Mike Mohan explores the nuances of friendship and responsibility and keeps it charming. The characters are real, and even more timely is the story’s challenge—this is your life, what are you gonna do about it?
Still single seven years after the breakup of his marriage, John has all but given up on romance. But at the urging of his ex-wife and best friend Jamie, John grudgingly agrees to join her and her fiancé Tim at a party. To his and everyone else’s surprise, he actually manages to meet someone: the gorgeous and spirited Molly. The relationship takes off quickly but Molly is oddly reluctant to take the relationship beyond John’s house. Perplexed, he follows her home and discovers the other man in Molly’s life: her son, Cyrus. A 21-year-old new age musician, Cyrus is his mom’s best friend and shares an unconventional relationship with her. Cyrus will go to any lengths to protect Molly and is definitely not ready to share her with anyone, especially John. Before long, the two are locked in a battle of wits for the woman they both love - and it appears only one man can be left standing when it’s over.
The Square Directed by: Nash Edgerton Starring: Anthony Hayes, Clair Van der Boom, David Roberts, Joel Edgerton, Kieran Darcy-Smith, &Peter Phelps Run Time: 105 minutes Screening Times: Saturday, April 10th at 8:00 PM Wednesday, Aprilth at 5:00 PM Ray, a married construction supervisor, is having an affair with Carla, who’s also married. Ray, reluctant at first, soon comes around and hatches an elaborate plan. But as is the case with plans driven by lust and greed, it seems destined to crash and burn...The fun, and the horror, comes in watching it unfold. Already an established stuntman and having made a slew of acclaimed short films as a director, Nash Edgerton transitions into the feature realm with perhaps the most gripping thriller to come from Australia in recent memory. Co-written by Nash’s brother Joel Edgerton, who also acts in the film, THE SQUARE has roots in classic noir but is imbued with a vividly distinct sensibility that is all Edgerton. Utilizing their trademark stunts to full effect, the Edgertons’ have fashioned an intense thriller with equally moving dramatic elements thanks to fully realized performances by the full ensemble. THE SQUARE is as stylish as it is unsettling. The film’s ever-building momentum will grip you and leave you breathless—as much from the film as from knowing that you’re witnessing the emergence of directorial force coming up from Down Under. 50 | 10th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 8 - 15, 2010

Stop Wasting Time.
Start Making Movies.
Sure, pulling three straight all-nighters to get your Alliance past the Horde and safely into the distant lands of Mulat may have been heroic, but was it productive? When it’s all you, making a movie can be a time consuming business. Don’t waste time with second-rate talent. Go with the pros and use one of SAG’s Low Budget Agreements. The AbMaster wouldn’t battle a three-headed dog before getting armed with a grenade launcher or magic sword. You shouldn’t take on your next production before getting armed with professional actors at affordable rates.

a song For ourselves Directed by Tadashi Nakamura A Song For Ourselves chronicles how an ordinary person made an extraordinary difference on generations of young people as discovered by the teenage sons he left too soon. This story of teacher and songwriter Chris Iijima shows how music can bridge disparities in race, ethnicity and age with an unrelenting passion for social justice and a life well lived. During the 1970s when Asians in America were invisible to most of the country,Chris’ music and passion for social justice provided the voice and identity an entire generation had been in search of. As an elementary school teacher in New York City in the 1980s, he put the diversity of his inner city students’ writings to music and gave them something to sing about. In the 1990s as a law professor to Hawaiian and other
underserved students in Honolulu he put issues of sovereignty and the land into song. After he died on New Year’s Eve 2005, memorials were held throughout the country. A Song For Ourselves reveals Chris’ multifaceted life as well as how his wife, teenage sons, singing partners and best friend learn to deal with his early death.
