Director’s Message Hello and Welcome! If you’re looking for the 13th Annual Phoenix Film Festival, you’ve come to the right place. Last year’s festival will be a tough act to follow but we feel like we’re up to the task. We’ve got quite a show for you. Year after year, filmmakers rave about this festival and our great audiences. Not only do you attend their films, but you have thoughtful questions for the Q&A and you’re awesome at spreading the word about great films. So thank you for coming and keep up the good work! Since last year we lost two long-time supporters. Michael Geffen was a volunteer for many years and a film fan even longer than that. Film fans like Michael are what the event is all about. This will also be the first year in a long time without Phoenix Film Critic Society member Neil Cohen. Neil was a film critic,

writer, actor and all-around great guy. We’ll miss them both this year. I would like to thank our huge team of volunteers. Every year I’m blown away by their commitment to our non-profit organization. The volunteers give their time and hard work to help make this a top-notch event, so please join me in thanking them. Of course, our sponsors are also a critical part of this event. They’re the businesses that have their logos over on pages six and seven. Please do us a favor and use them whenever you can. We couldn’t do this without them. Finally, I would like to thank our filmmakers. They work hard to create their art and are kind enough to allow us to exhibit it. Without these artists, we wouldn’t be able to Celebrate the Art of Film. Have a great time.

FESTIVAL 101

Welcome film lovers! You have arrived at one of the top film festivals in the United States! So, what exactly do you do at a “film festival”? Well, for starters, you can watch a lot of new films – all of the movies that are shown here at the PFF are all Valley-wide premieres, with the occasional retrospective thrown in for good measure. Basically, you kick-back with your popcorn and enjoy movies! I want to see movies. What do I do? We have a couple different options for you! You can either flip through this amazingly wonderful program that has been bestowed upon you, or go on to the PFF website. (phoenixfilmfestival.com). All of the films that screen at the festival are covered in the program and on our website. There’s a plethora of films including: narrative features, documentary features, short films, foreign films, and more – all there for you to watch over and over and over again. Where do I get tickets to see the movies? What a fantastic question! You can buy passes online or at the Festival Welcome Center located a few doors down from the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theatres – there’s a big sign, you can’t miss it. After you get a pass, you need to pick your films – get there early so your choices aren’t sold out! If you have a ticket for a screening, you are guaranteed a seat. If you don’t want a pass, you can buy single tickets both online and at the Welcome Center. But it seems silly to come to the Festival just to see one movie…Buy a pass, save some beer money, and have a great time! Do I have to wait in a line to see a movie? I hate to break it to you but yes, you do have to wait in lines for the films. Hey, don’t get mad at me, I’m just a program! It’s just that there are so many movies, and so many audience members. How else do you expect us to keep track? However, the audience lines will give you a chance to chit-chat with your fellow film lovers. Look at you making new friends! Have fun! There are 3 different lines – based on which pass or ticket you have. Line 1 is VIP/Filmmaker/Press – so if you have one of those passes, then you can sit first! Line 2 is for Full Festival Pass-holders. Line 3 is for the Flex Pass/Single Ticket holders. Are you feeling down because you don’t want to wait in your line, you want to be in the cool line? You can upgrade onsite at the Festival Welcome Center anytime during the Festival!

13th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 4-11, 2013

So I heard there’s other stuff going on? What’s that all about? Ok, you can’t just watch movies until your eyes bleed. It’s not safe. Which is why we’re giving you the opportunity to check out the biggest film party in Arizona! You’re welcome. Don’t forget to check out the Festival Party Pavilion during Opening Weekend. We’ve taken over a huge retail space a few buildings down the sidewalk, so just follow the signs! Within the Festival Party Pavilion you will find DJs, the burlesque show, the belly dancers, the bars and the parties, as well as the free seminars, our great partner booths where they love giving stuff away, and our silent auction where you can buy stuff and help out this amazing non-profit! I can already confirm what you’re thinking, “This is going to be the best week of my life!” What makes this “film festival” different than just going to the movies? When you go to the movies are you able to interact with actual filmmakers? Didn’t think so. Here, the filmmakers talk before the films, they talk after the films, they talk during the seminars and workshops, and they talk during the parties. Luckily, they won’t talk during the movies. They will even talk to you! Introduce yourself! Make sure you tell them that you liked their movie and that they have beautiful eyes. They love that! Okay, I’m sold. Anything else I should know? Please make sure if you ever have any questions, you ask our friendly Volunteer Staff! They are always smiling and wearing shirts that say Festival Crew! They are more than happy to help you out! We have over two hundred volunteers who work on the festival. Like you, they also love movies too! “Thanks for the help! You’ve been great.” No problem. That’s what this page is for! One more thing – enjoy the Phoenix Film Festival! With Love, The Executive Staff of the Phoenix Film Festival

Natalie Imbruglia Triple threat Natalie Imbruglia was born in Sydney, Australia and grew up in a small beach town. At 17, the actress/singer/songwriter was catapulted into the public’s consciousness when she appeared as Beth Brennan on the hit Aussie TV series Neighbours, a role she would inhabit for two years (1992-1994). Imbruglia followed her small screen success with a move to London where her music career flourished. Quickly becoming an anthem of the time, Torn - Imbruglia’s first single - was released in 1997 and broke air play records across the globe. Four studio albums followed with Imbruglia selling over nine million albums worldwide to date. Throughout her musical success, Imbruglia’s passion for acting never waned. In 2003 she appeared onscreen in the British spy spoof Johnny English, and she starred in the critically acclaimed 2009 drama Closed for Winter. Of her performance in the film, Variety wrote: “Believably expressing what it must be like to live with ungovernable sorrow, the actress proves to have much more than just a face the camera adores.” A global ambassador for charity organization Virgin Unite, Imbruglia splits her time between London and Los Angeles.

D. B. Sweeney D.B’s big break came in Francis Ford Coppola’s Gardens of Stone where he played a gung-ho Vietnam enlistee alongside screen legends James Caan, Anjelica Huston, and James Earl Jones. Sweeney subsequently made a big impression in the classic romantic comedy The Cutting Edge as Doug Dorsey, a tough hockey player who turns to figure skating after an eye injury. Perhaps his most memorable role was Shoeless Joe Jackson in Eight Men Out, costarring John Cusack, David Staitharn, and Charlie Sheen. Sweeney also starred in World War II thriller Memphis Belle alongside Mathew Modine and Eric Stoltz in the B17 bomber crew on their final dangerous mission into Germany and alongside the great Peter Falk in Roomates. Some of his many other films include Hear No Evil, Spawn, and No Man’s Land. Sweeney recently made his debut as a screenwriter, director, and producer with Two Tickets to Paradise. A founding board member of Los Angeles’ celebrated Blank Theatre who has appeared in over forty plays on Broadway and around the country, D.B. enjoys returning frequently to the theatre.

Melora Walters Melora Walters was born in Saudi Arabia. She grew up there, as well as in Holland. She is a graduate of Pratt Institute in New York City. As an actress, she has collaborated with such filmmakers as Paul Thomas Anderson, Taylor Hackford, John McNaughton, and Anthony Minghella to create memorable characters and performances. She most recently starred in HBO’s critically acclaimed series Big Love and this year she was seen in the independent features Case 219 and Missing Pieces as well as on Showtime’s Californication. Her upcoming credits include the independents Lonely Boy, Underdogs and Short Term 12. She has studied writing with Kim Calder and Chiwan Choi. Last year, Finishing Line Press published her first book of poetry Sonnets and Failures with some of her wood block prints. On June 21, 2011 Writ Large Press published her two books entitled In the Painting Heraclitus Wrings His Hands Above the World and Appears to be Crying and The Siren. In July, Launch LA presented a show that included the original art shown in the books, Lying Chicken Man and the Muse. The Lying Chicken Man series of paintings will accompany her next book, The Man and the Woman. She lives in Los Angeles with her two children, Tom and Joanna. Www.phxfilm.com

An Emmy, Writers Guild Award, Obie and Drama Critics Circle winner, Teller, with partner Penn Jillette, has enjoyed successful runs on Broadway, sold-out world tours and is the current longest-running headline act in Las Vegas. In 2008, Teller conceived and co-directed a bloody, supernatural thriller-inspired stage version of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” that toured the East Coast to raves from the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. In 2010 he co-wrote and directed the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway hit “Play Dead.” Conceived as an ode to the classic midnight spook shows of the mid-20th Century, he again received raves from the New York Times and Wall Street Journal and earned a Drama Desk nomination for “Unique Theatrical Experience.” A filmed version of the play is currently screening on the horror film festival circuit to great acclaim. Most recently, he consulted on the magic and effects for Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse production of “The Exorcist.” Teller has starred in his own television series and specials, has written five books and has a prolific career as a magic consultant for live theater, television and films.

We actually cook in our restaurants—chopping, marinating, grilling, mixing, mashing, shredding, whisking, sautéing and slicing—by hand, every day. While cooking by hand can add subtle variations from day to day—variety is, after all, the spice of life.

This documentary examines what Nashville used to be, why it was settled and how she grew into a rich cultural town. From the Opry to superstars from all genres of music, Nashville boasts the some of the greatest musicians and recording studios on earth. Country superstars call Nashville home, but non-country musicians have been recording there for years; Lionel Richie, Air Supply, Tesla, The Wailers, Brett Michaels, Queen of Rockabilly Wanda Jackson and more. From Gospel to Bluegrass and Rockabilly to Country, the heartland’s music has been generated here. But the days of country being the only influence are long gone with Rock superstars such as The Black Keys, The Kings of Leon, and Jack White of the White Stripes now calling Nashville home. Musicians helped the city pull together after the flood of 2010, telling a story about the empowering qualities of art, music and creativity.

As Walter tries to thwart their romance in order to ensure his future, he finds his circumscribed life thrown off-kilter, and after years of being undermined by his family and friends, he finally begins to realize his full potential. Love in the Grave Directed by: David Vondráček Run Time: 1 hour 20 minutes Cast: Tereza Krejci Screening Times: Friday, April 5 at 3:50pm Saturday, April 6 at 1:50pm Synopsis: The protagonists of David Vondráček’s love story are Jan and Jana, two street people who have found a home in an abandoned graveyard in the Prague suburb of Strašnice. The cemetery’s wall and overgrown trees form a physical and metaphorical border between two worlds. For Jana, living in a crypt represents safety, and she is relatively comfortable there. However, it is also a trap from which she is unable to escape. At the start of the film, the pair both speak about obtaining IDs and improving their lives, though in reality their situation worsens and they continue on a self-destructive path. The graveyard’s administrators announce a renovation but instead of finding a new place to stay, Jan and Jana increase their drinking and refuse help. “However I end up, that’s my free decision,” says Jana, though the results of her false pride soon become apparent. This documentary does not close its eyes to the unpleasant aspects of homelessness, and shows the impact a dysfunctional family background or a personal tragedy can have on a person’s fate.
