Speaking of nearby attractions that many aren’t aware of, the McDowell Sonoran Gabi Enriquez Conservancy is proactive in maintaining the health and viability of creatures within the Preserve. Since part of the Preserve is owned by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Indians, learn on Page 8 how the Yavapai Indians played a major role during the 1970s that saved the Desert Nesting Bald Eagle from going extinct.

What makes DC Ranch a vibrant and one-of-a-kind community isn’t only the rich history, annual events, and weekly programming that has kept the community strong; it is also those proactive community volunteers who are continuing to make a name in DC Ranch due to their contributions within the greater Valley. The Community Council recognizes seven influential resident leaders on page 8 and 9 for their dedication to positively affect DC Ranch.

I invite you—during the start of your summer vacation—to discover the gems around DC Ranch that you never truly knew about. They are each vastly important to making the community a more viable place to live for you and your family.

Growing with the Community Council since 2008, I have certainly witnessed events, opportunities, and residents evolve with the community. Now, as Senior Events and Programs manager, I find myself in awe of residents’ fresh perspectives on community life while maintaining the traditions that our neighbors cherish.

But what about the history and opportunities around DC Ranch that not many are aware of?

The June issue of Ranch News represents—not only the variety of programs offered for children this summer (learn more on page 7)—but also offers the chance to discover local adventures you didn’t realize were in your own backyard.

Community Updates

Speeding and security represent top issues in resident survey

Committee Proposals on Problem Areas Recommendations include an awareness campaign targeted at speeders, purchasing electronic speed signs, possible photo enforcement, and lastly, neighborhood speed bumps. The sub-committee has also been working closely with Scottsdale police to increase presence in problem areas and along public roadways.

Securing pathways and wall breaks also top the list especially in light of the recent number of burglaries, vehicle break-ins, and a car theft. It is important to note that thanks to an alert resident and swift police response, two burglary suspects are in custody. The duo has a history of burglaries and may have been responsible for some of the area crimes.

Further, the committee is tasked with determining costs, timelines, and measurable impact of the various ideas being discussed. Some of the possible security enhancements may include: closing wall breaks with landscape or fencing as appropriate by neighborhood, fencing and gates at passenger pathways, adding signage,

camera installation in problem areas, deputizing maintenance crews to enhance security watch, and adding evening golf course patrols.

New Security and Safety Improvements Cameras at all gates are operational that capture front and rear license plate information of vehicles entering or exiting DC Ranch neighborhoods. The Ranch Association is also implementing a new photo and gate pass code identification system for each resident. Homeowners and tenants may stop by any gatehouse or patrol vehicle to have their photo taken and input a secret four digit code used exclusively to confirm their identity. Residents may email a head shot and the gate code to DC Ranch Security at kenneth.sieloff@dcranchinc. com. Security also plans to roam various neighborhoods on a designated Saturday to help get the photos and codes set up. Dates and times will be forthcoming.

Javelina and rattlesnakes are the most common wildlife issues. Remember we share their natural habitat; however, relocation of persistent problems can be an option.

Security can assist whenever possible, but be alert especially during the hotter summer months when outdoors or hiking.

Final recommendations, details, and costs are planned to be announced at the June 2 board meeting at the Homestead Community Center. Residents are encouraged to attend.

Preliminary results from the recent comprehensive analysis of residents’ opinions on security, safety, and enforcement drew good response. About 28 percent of residents completed the survey and noted speeding and gate access as the priority issues. The highest demographic response came from single property homeowners of three- to 10-plus years, who are either empty-nesters or have children older than 12.

According to the survey, the majority of residents approve of the Ranch Association’s current enforcement policies and most at least moderately like the current security provider whose contract is up for renewal later this year. The data validates the initial recommendations by the Ranch Association’s Security Sub-Committee presented to the Board of Directors at the monthly meeting on May 5.

New Ranch Association officer positions assigned

The Ranch Association Board held its first monthly meeting May 5 and voted on officer positions for the upcoming year. Newly elected members Susan Grace, Don Matheson, and incumbent Joseph McGarr joined current seat holders Fred Green, Norm Schuminsky, John Henrickson, and Stephen Koven.

The board unanimously returned Green as president and McGarr as Treasurer.

Henrickson was voted in as Vice-President and Schuminsky as Secretary. Residents and Neighborhood Voting Members (NVMs) are encouraged to attend the board meetings held the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center.

Latest scoop on pet waste

The Ranch Association is installing 10 additional pet waste and baggie stations so that now all neighborhood parks will be equipped. The installation should be completed by early July. According to the recent security survey, pet waste is a main resident concern. While the doggy stations will help in the parks, pet waste continues to plague trails and pathways. Please do your neighborly part and remember to pick up after your pet while using the common areas. Dogs must also be on a leash when outside per the Maricopa County Leash Law to ensure a safer environment for everyone.

Items for your vacation checklist

If you’d like that extra peace of mind while you’re on vacation, please remember to fill out the online Vacation/Extended Absence Notification form on the DCRanch.com Resident Services section. The form gives permission for DC Ranch Security to drive by your property daily and conduct a physical check of the perimeter and all exterior doors twice a week during your absence.

Security can also assist with any deliveries, visitors, or contracting work that may be planned while you’re away.

Be conscientious of seasonal irrigation and shrubbery maintenance

June is typically the driest month of the year in Arizona, so remember to check your irrigation controllers and set a schedule that provides deep watering. Many systems return to factory presets after a power outage, which may not be adequate for the intense summer heat. Remind your landscaper or check your system after an electrical storm. To minimize evaporation, water your turf early in the morning before sunrise. Any brown patches left from dying rye grass should bounce back after raking and removing these areas.

Follow with a couple weeks of adequate water and fertilize with a multi-purpose blend every four to six weeks.

Be aware of maintaining the health of plants as well. If there is browning on the tips of leaves on trees or shrubs— which is a sign of salt burn due to shallow watering—then flush the soil through the root zone with deep, infrequent watering. Most desert trees start to drop leaves around this time which is the natural way these plants cope with the hot temperatures. Continue watering properly and new growth will eventually emerge.

Residents give Paint Expo positive reviews

The DC Ranch Association Paint Expo hosted a full house of residents who attended the April 27 event at Desert Camp Community Center. Residents learned about choosing exterior custom colors or updating an existing paint palette. Ranch Association staff also assisted by providing paint palette schemes, modification forms, and guidelines to consider in determining new color choices. The Ranch Association extends a special thank you to these local companies: Advanced Painting & Contracting, CLC Enterprises, Titan Painting, Aspen Painting & Coatings, Sherwin-Williams, Dunn Edwards, First Citizens Bank, and Southwest Direct Mortgage. Q: Welcome to the neighborhood, Linda! What inspired your decision to locate in DC Ranch Crossing?

College Planning

529 plan can help with college funding and estate planning considerations Michael Campbell | Financial advisor at Edward Jones on Market Street Now that residents are starting to plan for another school year, children are a step closer to the day when they’ll be heading off to college.

Higher education doesn’t come cheap—and the costs seem to continuously climb. You can help your children, or even your grandchildren, meet these expenses by investing in a 529 plan. And this college savings vehicle also offers estate-planning benefits.

As a college funding vehicle, a 529 plan offers several significant benefits. When you contribute to a 529 plan, your earnings accumulate tax free (provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses). Keep in mind, though, that 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10 percent IRS penalty. Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. However, 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor. The lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans are quite generous; while these limits vary by state, many plans allow contributions well in excess of $200,000. Plus, a 529 plan is flexible: If a child, grandchild, or other beneficiary decides against college, you can transfer the unused funds to someone else, tax and penalty free.

Now, let’s turn to a 529 plan’s estate-planning benefits. If you think that you may need to reduce the size of your taxable estate, you may find that the 529 plan offers a solution. When you establish and contribute to a 529 plan, the assets leave your estate, but they don’t leave your control. If your named beneficiary decides against college and you don’t have another family member to whom you can transfer the account—or if you simply change your mind about funding the 529 plan—you can get your money back at any time. As mentioned previously, however, you’ll have to pay taxes, and possibly a 10 percent IRS penalty, on the earnings.

Your contributions to a 529 plan also qualify for the $14,000 annual gift tax exclusion, so you can give large amounts each year without incurring the gift tax.

In the investment world, you can find many vehicles that can help you make progress toward one goal. But it’s far less common to find something that may give you a boost toward two. And when the two goals are helping a child or grandchild attend college and lowering the value of your taxable estate — while still maintaining control of your assets, you’ve got an investment worth considering.

Overall, consult with your tax and financial advisors to determine if a 529 plan is right for you. If it is, think about taking action soon, because the more years you can contribute to a 529 plan, the better the outlook for both your future student and your estate plans.

McDowell Sonoran Conservancy

Our neighbors to the north and east of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, have a long and deep connection to the Sonoran Desert and McDowell Mountains. Their ancestors once occupied about 10 million across southern, central, and northern Arizona. They lived, hunted, cultivated, and gathered plants, and sought spiritual guidance from these lands and water from the sacred Verde River.

Desert Nesting Bald Eagle Following their suppression by the U.S. Army in the 1870s, the Yavapai were confined to three reservations in Arizona.

One of the three resulting Yavapai Tribes, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nations, was formed by the President Executive Order in 1903. It encompasses 24,000 acres of Sonoran desert and wetlands, and is home to 950 tribal members. Today, Yavapai view their ancestral lands as a spiritually significant part of their lives.

The creation of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy some of the Yavapai ancestral land. Accordingly, when we hike or bike a Preserve trail, it’s worth knowing that, as novelist Susan Powers notes, “Underneath today’s map of American lies a ghost geography—a network of Native American trails, villages, and traditions that existed long before most of our ancestors arrived.”

Eagles, Dollars, and Soil If you lived here in the 1970s you may recall the Orme Dam controversy. Construction of this dam was proposed at the confluence of the Verde and Salt Rivers near the Yavapai’s reservation’s southern border. The U.S. government offered millions of dollars, other land, and new homes in return for accepting and relocating of the dam.

The Yavapai said no. Orme Dam would have flooded more than 65 percent of the reservation and covered its most fertile river bottomlands used for farming, cattlegrazing, housing, and recreation. It would have also destroyed Yavapai sacred lands.

Adding insult to injury, the dam would have drowned critical Desert Nesting Bald Eagle (DNBE) habitat along the Verde River.

“The eagle helped protect the Yavapai people from the Orme Dam, and now the Yavapai people work hard to protect the eagle,” explained Fort McDowell Yavapai Government Relations Director Dr. Carole Klopatek.

Today, the community takes pride in the DNBE population, which is one of the highest in Arizona. Their environmental protection policies are more stringent than those of the federal government.

Passing on Traditions Many cultures abandon their history and traditions in a rush to be part of the modern world. This was happening with Yavapai youth. To halt this trend, cultural programs have been developed to pass on the traditions of grandparents and greatgrandparents. Young Yavapai can now learn their native language and traditions.

Field trips teach them how to harvest saguaro fruit and make jelly the traditional Yavapai way. Volunteer Appreciation

City of Scottsdale Vice Mayor honors resident volunteers for community contributions Seven residents were recognized for their service to the community at the third annual Volunteer Appreciation event on April 5.

Keynote speaker City of Scottsdale Vice Mayor Virgina Korte, discussed the importance task it takes to simply have one person donate their time for the greater good; not only in DC Ranch, but in the larger community as well.

The Community Council would like to thank these selfless individuals who have made DC Ranch a more connected and viable place to live thanks to their community contributions.

Leadership Award

Rich Puricelli

Rich Puricelli Puricelli served three years on the Community Council Board of Directors, two as Treasurer and one as board President. He led the Community Council’s search committee for a new executive director and dedicated many hours to her on-boarding when hired. His steadfast leadership in 2013 significantly contributed to the Community Council’s current success.

Philanthropic Award The Philanthropic award recognizes a resident who volunteers for a community service project or creates a resident-led giving project.

Phyllis Banucci

Phyllis Banucci Banucci has served on committees from both Rally for the Cure and The Country Club at DC Ranch. As an accomplished musician, she also volunteers her time as a singer with Arizona Musicfest Chorus and Arizona State Choral Union.

Banucci is on the Board of Directors of Family Promise, a program for homeless families with children located in Scottsdale. Through Banucci’s commitment and ability, she helped raise the charity to a highly successful and recognized institution. She has served four years as Vice President and four years as President, continuing to help Family Promise achieve its goals and fulfill their mission.

Community supporters and their families were treated to a cocktail reception to honor the Volunteers of the Year on the patio at Desert Camp Community Center.

Good Neighbor Awards The Good Neighbor award is offered to a resident who is known for lending a helping hand, or identifying a need in the community and taking action to see that it is filled. Two residents were recognized in this category.

Judy Headley Headley not only co-founded the successful social group DC Ranch Women, but also serves as Vice President of the club. Headley has helped the program grow by finding new places to host their happening. Headley also encouraged women to donate their time to important issues, such as The Country Club at DC Ranch’s Rally for the Cure. Even more, Headley is hugely involved with mahjong and canasta within the community centers—making a point to connect with others and get them engaged within DC Ranch.

Susan Grace Grace has been a resident of DC Ranch since 1998. Since then, Grace has continually volunteered her time at community events. Her most notable Good Neighbor deed stems from the outstandingly successful DC Ranch Film Club. Not only did she help organize the group, but is active in promoting and individually planning each group’s meeting.

Youth Leadership Awards The Youth Leadership award recognizes a youth or teen who volunteers at community events or programs. Two people were recognized in these categories.

Abby Runyon and Jenna Mazel Runyon and Mazel have volunteered countless hours at The Homestead Playhouse by helping organize sets, props, and costumes. These two young individuals are both essential as backstage help for numerous productions over the past few years. These ladies have also taken the role of mentoring younger actors to make theatre an approachable avenue of learning at the Playhouse.

Tessa Plescia just had the time of her life at the happiest place on Earth.

With some stealth planning, Tessa’s parents, George and Melissa, surprised the four-year old with a magical trip to Disneyland to kick off a summer that’s sure to be filled with special memories.

“We wanted it to be a surprise for sure,” said George. “But we kept it a secret for our own sanity, too. If Tessa had known about Disney, that’s probably all she would have talked about for months.”

A grounded approach to parenting is one of the attributes that makes George such a great dad, according to Melissa.

“George has such a steady nature and it’s a wonderful balance to our parenting styles,” said Melissa.

This Father’s Day will be extra special for George as it marks the Plescia’s one-year anniversary of moving to Arizona and, in particular, DC Ranch.

“We moved from California to escape the hustle and bustle, and really focus on raising Tessa in the best family environment possible,” said George. “We were sold on DC Ranch right away when we saw all the events and programs that were offered for children.”

Not only does Tessa love to plant flowers, she is also a fan of homegrown vegetables.

“Tessa is so much more open to eating vegetables if she grows them herself. She loves to watch the plants grow and see the vegetables ripen on the vines,” said George. “She picks tomatoes and eats them like apples. It’s amazing!”

As a father, George hopes to expose Tessa to a variety of opportunities to help give her the tools to become a wellrounded person.

“In addition to getting Tessa involved with sports and social activities, Melissa and I also try and teach her about helping

others,” said George. “At Christmas time we donated coats and clothes to a family shelter which I think has a profound effect on Tessa. She still talks about it and looks forward to the next time we can help other children.”

Now back from the surprise trip from visiting Mickey and Minnie, the Plescias plan to spend Father’s Day as they always have: as a connected family dedicated to giving Tessa unconditional love and support.

Summer is here! From cooling off at the Desert Camp pool to enjoying the slower summer pace around the Ranch, here are a few fun factoids about resident life during summertime.

The summer season brings an array of scents to your garden, attracting many flittering creatures such as hummingbirds and butterflies. Not only are they aesthetically appealing to a garden atmosphere, but these high flyers also help pollenate the plants.

Hummingbirds tend to pollinate red, bright pink, and orange tubular shaped flowers. Combinations of some or all of these plants are certain to bring the hummers to your Arizona garden: Salvia Greggii | Pentas | Penstemmon | Bee Balm | Mexican Bush Sage | Agastache | Pentunia | Aloe | Firecracker Bush | Desert Honeysuckle | Mexican Flame Vine | Chuperosa | Red Bird of Paradise | Hong Kong Orchid Tree

With the great state of Arizona boasting nearly 250 species of butterfly, the right plants and environment can attract these delicate beings to your garden. Butterflies enjoy mass plantings of wide shallow flowers that they can easily perch on. They enjoy annual flowers such as zinnia, cosmos, and marigold.

Please check your neighborhood plant pallet for approved plants in your community before planting near your home. Planting in a location that is not is not a high traffic, but in one that you may easily observe—like the DC Ranch Community Garden at Copper Ridge School—is an ideal location for a butterfly and hummingbird garden.
