Ranch News Highlights
Summer is a time for making memories
When you think summertime, several images may come to mind such as: pool parties, popsicles, road trips, camping, and fireworks. I’m sure you have fond memories of this leisurely time of year from your childhood. As the summer hits its peak and kids start thinking about heading back to the classroom, there is still time to make some great memories. Cool off on Friday nights in July with the Dive-In Movie series at the Desert Camp pool. Enjoy popular family animated movies like Frozen, Despicable Me 2, The Lego Movie, and Monsters University. Have you heard about the new adult aquatics programs at the Desert Camp pool? The Community Council now offers Fitness Swim and Shallow Water Exercise in the mornings on various days throughout the week. You can find out more information on page 7. While it can be difficult to see the freedom of summer days slip away, it’s hard not to get excited about the adventures that lie ahead. Be sure to read the Back to School feature section (see page 8), with a preview of new trends in education and afterschool programs. The DC Ranch Community Garden at Copper Ridge School will also play host to some educational programs for young students in the new school year. Kids will want to mark their calendars for the Back to School Bash Aug. 8 at The Homestead Community Center. How does food, prizes, a DJ, and plenty of neon glow sticks sound? Sorry parents, this

Spotlight on Ranch Association
Community Updates
Board overwhelmingly approves security recommendations
STAFF ANNIVERSARIES
DC Ranch personnel joined Scottsdale community leaders at the fire training facility in Tempe May 28 to develop emergency response plans in the event of a wildfire in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

The Ranch Association Board of Directors by majority passed all measures proposed by the subcommittee on security and safety at the Board’s June 2 meeting. Dozens of residents and Neighborhood Voting Members attended the meeting to get a first look and comment on the proposals presented. The Ranch Association will launch a comprehensive educational campaign this fall to help encourage residents to reduce speeding. Articles and safety tips will published on DC Ranch.com and in community publications. Additionally, the Board approved the purchase of three solar-powered electronic speed signs that will be used to deter speeding and capture data to measure the effectiveness of the signs. The electronic signage is programmable to clock vehicle speeds and flash speed warnings. The signs are portable and interchangeable with existing speed limit postings. The Board also adopted new, standardized speed limits for all DC Ranch-owned roads, and approved installation of 10 additional speed limit signs and posts. The revised speed limits are 25 mph for major thoroughfares and 15 mph for arterial neighborhood roads. The only exception is the south loop of Desert Camp Drive which is city-owned. The posted limit will remain at 30 mph. Controls to tighten vehicular access to the communities are underway with the new photo and pass code program at all gates for homeowners and their immediate family members. The updated procedure allows residents to input a secret four digit family code for identification purposes. The goal is to have 100 percent community participation in the program by year’s end. Adding the photograph is optional. Signage will be used to inform pedestrian traffic at main neighborhood entrances and hiking trails that they are entering private residential areas.
The Board approved the design and purchase of 10 community pedestrian signs that will be placed in appropriate areas. A pilot program to monitor activity along the trail leading into Country Club village from Market Street prompted some active discussion among board members and residents concerning privacy. The proposed camera system, which would collect data and allow security staff to monitor activity in real time, was approved by the Board. Finally, the Board agreed to have the Ranch Association work directly with the Community Council to evaluate the need for additional doggy relief stations. These would be located along popular pathways and trails to reinforce efforts to clean up pet waste. The Ranch Association extends its gratitude to security subcommittee chair John Henrickson and members: Philip Geiger, Kirk Kaprelian, Terry Malloy, Dennis Myers, Don Ruff, Wendy Tippett, Julie Longmire, and Janet Pennewell.
The following DC Ranch team members celebrate an anniversary in July and August. Please join us in thanking them for their continued service. Management, security, and communication team members from the Ranch Association and the Community Council recently attended a wildfire training program presented by the Scottsdale Office of Emergency Management in late May. The tabletop exercise simulated a wildfire breaking out in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve near DC Ranch. Scottsdale fire, law enforcement, medical, and Preserve officials converged to discuss communication processes, emergency roles and responsibilities, resource allocation, and community information. Attendees and authorities used the drill to identify areas for improvement to enable swift response in the event of a real wildfire danger. The information learned is especially helpful as the monsoon season approaches and lightning strikes become more frequent.
Security streamlines identification procedures
Implementation of the new DC Ranch Security gate pass identification system is underway and the Ranch Association needs your help. Homeowners, tenants, and their immediate families are encouraged to stop by any gatehouse or patrol vehicle to have their photo taken and input a secret four digit family identification code to confirm their identity. Or, residents may email a picture and an identification code to DC Ranch Security Programmer Kenneth Sieloff at Kenneth.Sieloff@dcranchinc.com. DC Ranch Security has also introduced a revamped user-friendly security page on DCRanch.com which includes online forms and gate access resources. Click the “Security” tab on DCRanch.com to visit the new page.
Make pool parties a splash with neighbors
Now that school’s out and the heat is on, many of us will be enjoying backyard and poolside festivities throughout the day and evening. Please do your neighborly part and be courteous of outside noise volumes or loud music.
Upcoming Bulk Trash Dates
Mark your calendar for July 28 and Aug. 25 for the summertime municipal bulk waste collection dates. Solid Waste Management crews shift to earlier hours in the summer, so residents are asked to place trash at the curb by 5 a.m. the day of their scheduled collection. Piles should not exceed 10 ‘long x 6 ‘wide x 4’ tall and should be placed curb side near your normal trash collection site. The City of Scottsdale will not pick up items placed on the street, landscaped medians, or common areas. Also, please do not use the community center dumpsters for disposal of large items. For more refuse tips, contact Solid Waste Management at 480.312.5600 or visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov/recycle.

I feel honored to be serving as a member of the Ranch Association’s Board of Directors. As one of the early homeowners in the community, I have a deep appreciation for the developer’s vision and the values that were established by residents. As a board member, I will be committed to keeping these standards at the forefront of my thinking as we work together to resolve new problems and concerns. Engagement is one of our community values and I look forward to engaging with all residents, including Neighborhood Voting Members (NVMs). Let’s face it, your suggestions and concerns contribute significantly to the Board’s agenda. As the Susan Grace community continues to mature there will always be new issues to address. When you see me at the DC Ranch Film Club or a gathering of DC Ranch Women or elsewhere, please ask me questions and bend my ear. I’m a good listener and, after all, I was elected to this important position and can only do my job if we all engage. —Susan Grace, Ranch Association board member
Thank you all for the opportunity to work towards the continued betterment of our community. Serving on the Ranch Association Board of Directors is a responsibility I take very seriously. I live and spend the greater part of my work day in DC Ranch. As a new board member, I would like to work towards the broader engagement of our community’s three pillars: The Ranch Association, the Community Council, and the Covenant Commission. I believe this collaboration can be used to springboard a cooperative neighborhood watch initiative. It would require active participation of residents, realtors, landscapers and members Don Matheson of both of DC Ranch’s private clubs. This goal is ambitious, but I know it can be achieved through the hard work, dedication and support of our community’s outstanding residents. I am truly looking forward to working with all of you. —Don Matheson, Ranch Association board member

Board members serve a two year term and exercise great care and concern in determining the issues brought forth for decision in executing their fiduciary duties. Neighborhood Voting Members, or NVMs, act as the unified voice for each neighborhood and are responsible for electing those chosen to sit on the board. You, the residents, determine who will serve as NVMs and together we work to mutually protect and preserve the community’s fiscal and environmental assets. The Ranch Association is pleased to welcome Susan Grace and Don Matheson as newly elected members of this year’s board of directors. Each has a set of priorities to maintain and improve the community’s excellent quality of life.

DC Ranch’s newest lease on luxury: Camden Foothills apartment homes By Ruth Rosenquist
The life-enriching environment found at DC Ranch is one of the main draws for the new residents about to move into the community. Camden’s Jessica Mamurowski highlights the amazing amenities at their latest property.
Q: Can you describe the new community at Camden Foothills? A: Camden Foothills is comprised of luxury apartment homes featuring spacious one, two and three bedroom floor plans. Inside, you will find chef-inspired kitchens, quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, two-inch blinds, wood plank flooring, and designer carpet. Added features that make a big difference include USB-enabled wall outlets in living rooms and bedrooms, a designer lighting package, along with generous walk-in closets. Q: Can you share the special amenities that Camden built into this project? A: Our residents will enjoy relaxing and socializing in the outdoor retreat with a BBQ area, community campfire, and a social lounge. They can exercise in our fitness studio or get some sun by the sparkling swimming pool. At Camden Foothills, our four legged residents are important, too. We created an unleashed dog park with controlled access and a unique outdoor pet washing station just for them. Q: What prompted Camden to build in DC Ranch? A: The combination of DC Ranch’s pristine mountain vistas, paired with the abundant retail and services next door at DC Ranch Crossing made this location a natural choice. Camden Foothills residents will have access to everything from a gourmet market to popular dining, childcare, and pet care services. Q: When will the homes be available for move-in? A: Camden Foothills will begin leasing apartments at the end of summer 2014. Q: Can you share price points? A: Camden Foothills apartments will be available for lease starting at $1,200 per month. The price range is based on floor plan and desired lease term.

This year, the 2014 Tour de Scottsdale welcomes back Lexus as the presenting sponsor for Scottsdale’s signature cycling event. Oliver Smith Jewelers also returns sponsoring the 30-mile ride. We are proud to announce that FASTER — cycling’s most comprehensive performance center — is once again the premiere cycling sponsor. Through their sponsorships, each company helps provide funding to the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. Our organization is charged with maintaining and protecting Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, the largest urban preserve in America. “We are excited to be part of one of the preeminent cycling events in the Valley with our second year sponsorship,” said James Kramer, FASTER’s founder. “We know the proceeds from the 2014 Tour de Scottsdale go directly to maintaining this majestic natural resource, our Preserve.” Each year the Tour de Scottsdale makes a significant impact assisting the Conservancy by helping to support the more than 500 volunteer stewards in the Preserve, which now totals more than 30,000 acres. These contributions also support ongoing research in the Preserve conducted by the McDowell Sonoran Field Institute. “The Preserve offers some of the best outdoor resources available,” said Kramer. “Our partnership with the Tour de Scottsdale helps ensure this natural gem is available for hikers, equestrians, cyclists, and runners.” Residents can also contribute to the health and well-being of the Preserve by serving as volunteer stewards. These individuals assist with everything from answering visitor questions at the Gateway Trailhead to maintaining the hiking trails. Volunteers are also needed to help with the Tour itself in October. Learn more at McDowellSonoran.org or call 480.998.7971.

When the new school year starts on Aug. 6, students at Copper Ridge School will still have all the classes they had last year. But, due to the ballot defeat of the Maintenance & Operations (M&O) Override in the last municipal election, so-called “specials” classes — taught by credentialed teachers but outside of the regular classroom — of art, music and physical education will be cut in half. As of press time for this issue, plans for the school’s curriculum involve putting art, music and PE on a six-day rotation instead of offering them every day. This is part of $1.5 million in district-wide budget cuts necessitated by the nonpassage of the M&O Override. “Copper Ridge School will receive approximately 2.2 less FTEs [full-time equivalent staffing positions] based on that budget cut,” said Daniel O’Brien, chief financial officer for the Scottsdale Unified School District. Loss of the “specials” programming is expected to cut into the preparation time allotted to classroom teachers. Among the ideas for making up the lost prep time is longer lunch and recess breaks, said Copper Ridge Principal Michelle Otstot.
“We have a lot of clubs,” said Copper Ridge School Principal Michelle Otstot. Most are after-school enrichment activities made possible through community education funding.
For the students, Otstot said she is looking at opportunities to provide something more structured during the longer breaks than the usual free play. “I’ve spoken with the Boys & Girls Club about providing PE enrichment during recess,” she said, noting funds for this could be provided through tax credits. While the non-passage of the override has resulted in permanent staffing cuts, O’Brien explains there is another factor that may impact staffing. “We are paid a per-student allotment by the State,” he said, noting there
Notre Dame Prep goes high tech
has been a reduction in the number of students across the district and Copper Ridge stands to lose two teaching positions due to enrolment numbers. Targeted average ratios of 29:1 for first grade, 31:1 for second grade and 32:1 for third grade dictate the staffing the school would receive, according to O’Brien, who says that at this time Copper Ridge will lose two FTE teaching positions in first and second grades. At Notre Dame, last year’s freshman class of 210 students enjoyed experiences at the frontlines of the tech-based Oneto-One program. Most textbooks were replaced in favor of instruction, lessons, and learning opportunities oriented around the iPad. Students were charged a lab fee of $1,250 each. It covers hardware, a carrying case, course content, and repair services. A $4.75-million infusion of grant monies from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, which will be allocated shortly, will facilitate additional hardware, software, and related projects. The grant also allocates funds for trainings at Notre Dame and the other Catholic high school campuses, pending the completion of campus tech surveys and audits. Notre Dame President and Principal Jim Gmelich, who helped steward the school’s One-to-One launch last fall, believes the move to tech-based instruction is essential. “It’s more important than ever that we, as educators, are nimble today,” Gmelich said. “It’s not just that technology is

We are always also able to obtain historical perspectives through older, analog methods of learning,” said MaryBeth Mueller, superintendent of schools in the Roman Catholic Diocese. In order to meet the academic needs of Scottsdale Unified School District’s (SUSD) high achieving students, SUSD will expand its Middle School Honors Program by adding English Language Arts to the curriculum for its six middle schools and three K-8 schools for the 2014-15 school year. “We believe that SUSD is ‘The Best Choice’ for students. By enhancing the Middle School Honors Program to include English Language Arts, in addition to math, we offer the best choice for sixth to eighth grade students who have demonstrated that they are ready to move toward a more rigorous curriculum,” said Dr. Andi Fourlis, executive director of teaching and learning. The goal of middle school is to prepare students for high school coursework. The Middle School Honors Program will enhance high school readiness, as students receive support from teachers along the way with continuous encouragement and feedback on their work. “The continued parental support at the middle school level is crucial. Parents can assist their pre-teen as he or she engages in critical thinking, problem solving, analysis and application of learning,” said Dr. Fourlis. Currently, middle school students can earn high school credit for taking and passing Algebra I, Geometry, Geometry/Trigonometry Honors, and World Languages.

By Becky Kelbaugh | SUSD The Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is on the cutting edge of athletics by being one of the first school districts in Arizona to introduce the Turbo Javelin (TurboJav) in the Middle School Track and Field Program. “The USA Track & Field program is the only other program in Arizona using the TurboJav,” said Clif McKenzie, executive director of The TurboJav is made of polyethylene, has a rubber tip K-12 Athletics. “Our middle school and varies in weight. coaching staff will teach students how to throw it correctly, so they can develop better throwing abilities by the time the athletes reach high school and college. The students will be able to advance to become elite throwers and possibly make it to the USA Olympic Team one day.” Currently, the javelin is not an event at the high school level in Arizona; however, the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) is discussing introducing the TurboJav. The TurboJav was invented by Tom Petranoff in 1990. As a two time world record holder in javelin, Petranoff was asked to develop a safer javelin option for beginner athletes. It is also ideal for the more advanced athlete to use as a training implement to improve their accuracy and technique. It has a softnose, which enhances the safety feature and allows it to be also thrown indoors. SUSD Middle School Track and Field students began using the TurboJav at the first track meet last spring and plan to incorporate it into the program again this year.

Copper Ridge continued from Page 9 There are a number of programs, however, that are taught by an instructional assistant. But in these classes the credentialed teacher must remain with the students, thus taking away from their individual prep-time. Library time and computer time are two such programs specific to Copper Ridge. Another, being added next year, is Spanish time for kindergarten through fifth grade. “This is being developed due to community feedback,” Otstot said. Copper Ridge School will continue its extensive additional enrichment programs. One of these is the Art Masterpiece program, in which parents who have been trained in the program work with the students. Another is the Master Gardener program, taking advantage of the large garden on the campus as well as the nearby community garden. “Our fifth grade works with a real ‘master gardener’,” Otstot said of the program that supports the science curriculum. Copper Ridge has several after-school clubs. Among these is the Heritage Club, which combines band, strings and electric keyboarding; for middle school students, this program includes attending the Heritage Festival in the fall. There is also a robotics club. And a new elective for the middle school is musical theater, which will combine drama and choir. Tax credits are one additional source of revenue for the schools, but Otstot noted these funds can be used only for non-instructional time such as before- and afterschool programming. “All our field trips are paid for with tax credit money,” she said. Charros supports the school with some funding. And Otstot credits the PTO, to which anyone can contribute, for its tremendous support of the school’s programs. “We wouldn’t have such a dynamic campus without the Charros,” she said. Businesses also contribute both time and equipment, and Otstot would encourage more to get involved. “Take a special interest in our school, and help build up a program.” Notre Dame continued from Page 9 Principal Gmelich says the technology allows and encourages a level of interactivity and experiential learning that surpasses the education afforded by frequently outdated textbooks. In Notre Dame’s geography class, for example, Gmelich says students are able to virtually tour the Great Pyramids on their iPads. Less than 20 years ago, Gmelich was using slide shows and old maps to teach similar lessons. “The truth is, good teaching is good teaching, whether you have a calculator or a slate and chalk or the latest, greatest gizmo,” he said. “But the breadth of learning expands with technology, and the students really connect with it.” According to Superintendent Mueller, embracing technology in the classroom will allow virtual learning, online courses, and other learning options for Advanced Placement and dual-enrolled students. Principal Gmelich says students appreciate the portability of the devices, which reduces the weight of a backpack overloaded with textbooks. “We’re seeing better levels of organization in the students, as well,” he said. “It’s much harder to claim the dog ate your homework if it’s done on an iPad.” The six area Catholic high schools began giving serious consideration to techbased learning when, in the late 1990s, the federal government signed into effect a program offering reduced-cost technology to schools via the Universal Service Fund, also known as E-Rate. Over the last three years, advanced tech plans were drafted for the schools in a wide-ranging collaboration between administrators, instructors, educational experts, and community members. Marilee Dal Pra, vice president of programs at Piper Trust, says her organization’s grant monies will be deployed over time in the purchase not only of devices, hardware, and software, but also campus infrastructure upgrades, staff training, and security. Principal Gmelich, who took the helm at Notre Dame in the summer of 2013, will issue iPads to next fall’s 270 incoming freshmen. “A great education is still about the relationship between student and teacher. Technology is just a tool to enhance that relationship; it could never, ever replace that relationship,” he said. “Remember only a few years ago, everyone was excited to be using TI84 calculators in math class? Well, in five years, I’m sure we’ll all look back and say, ‘I can’t believe we ever got it done with iPads!’”

“If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere,” said DC Ranch resident Danny Nelson. “Isn’t that how the song goes?” A native New Yorker, Nelson spent his early life on the baseball field, playing centerfield throughout his youth and into high school. “In those days, the New York Yankees would award annual scholarships to high school students in each of the boroughs. It afforded them the opportunity to attend college while continuing to play baseball at the collegiate level,” said Nelson, who was chosen by the Yankees as the Bronx’s scholarship recipient in the early 1980s. Thanks to the Yankees, Nelson was a starter on Pace University’s team and on his way to earning a college degree. “But, even at that time, everyone knew the power of baseball programs on the West Coast,” said Nelson. So, Nelson packed up his bat and cleats, and moved to Arizona in hopes of walking on to the ASU baseball team. “If the Yankees liked me, surely the Sun Devils would love me – right?” said Nelson. He was cut. “That was the first time I realized I was not good enough to play at that level – it was the best thing that ever happened to me,” said Nelson, who stayed at ASU, determined to make it here on the West Coast. Realizing baseball was no longer an option, Nelson threw himself into an insurance sales position after ASU. “This was 25 years ago – Arizona was still a baby in terms of its emergence as
a major U.S. economy,” said Nelson. “At first, I was really just helping couples with their retirement and financial planning needs.” But as Arizona grew, so did his clients’ needs. He found that, as many of them were starting businesses and as Arizona became a hotbed for entrepreneurs, they needed help with employee benefits, insurance, and a myriad other areas. “We would hire a specialist to help answer clients’ questions as their needs grew. The next think I knew, I had a business model – a good one,” said Nelson, who founded Nelson Financial Group (NFG) in 1997. By 2012, business was booming. So much so, in fact, that he launched Nelson Financial Services (NFS) to assist with the added work. The company then entered into a relationship with AXA Advisors Southwest, a leading provider of financial services for consumers and businesses. “This really brought me back to my roots and gave us the ability to provide extensive wealth management and advisement services. It also allowed my team to focus on business insurance and other corporate needs,” said Nelson. A match made in business heaven, today, Nelson is one of just eight Arizonans classified as “Top of the Table,” awarded to only the top 1 percent of those in his industry worldwide. It’s earned him the business of several athletes and celebrities, along with some of Arizona’s largest retailers. “Maybe even a ballplayer or two,” teased Nelson.

Monsoon season is upon us, be prepared
Most fatalities during storms occur in motor vehicles. Your home is generally one of the safest places to be during a severe storm. Plan ahead and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary during heavy rains or high winds. At home, make sure you have a “ready kit” packed with a 72-hour supply of food, water and other basic needs. Such a kit is important to have during a power outage or if you are unable to leave your home for an extended period. For more information, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov/emergencies/monsoon.
City Council summer schedule
The Scottsdale City Council will not conduct City Council meetings from July 3 until members reconvene for a Monday, Aug. 18, meeting. However, if necessary, the Council could set special meetings and is available to citizens throughout this time. To confirm meeting dates, check the City’s website at ScottsdaleAZ.gov.
More international flights landing at Scottsdale Airport
U.S. Customs reports a record number of international flights landed at Scottsdale Airport in the early part of 2014. More than 330 international flights arrived in Scottsdale through April. That’s compared to the 490 international flights that landed in 2013. The increase is attributed to the expanded U.S. Customs office and hours at the airport. In February, the airport added a second Customs officer to keep up with the larger number of international business flights.
Food bank needs your support
Don’t forget the Vista del Camino Food Bank this summer. Food supplies for families in need can run very low in the summer when kids are home from school and household expenses, such as food and utility bills, are higher. Please bring nonperishable food items from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to Vista, 7700 E. Roosevelt St. Items most needed include canned foods, boxed cereals, baby food and formula, diapers, and toiletries. Call 480.312.2323 for more information.
Registration for lifelong learning classes begins Aug. 13-14
Come explore the wide range of Scottsdale recreational activities available as part of the fall session starting mid-September. You’ll be amazed to discover all you can do with Parks and Recreation. Registration begins on Wednesday, Aug. 13, for residents and Aug. 14 for nonresidents. Go online to see the choices at Recreation.ScottsdaleAZ.gov. MIM’s galleries now available via Google Street View Imagery brings interior of musical museum to patrons worldwide
Photo: MIM
The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in north Phoenix is the latest cultural institution to have its galleries accessible online using Google’s Street View technology. People around the world are now able to virtually tour MIM and view more than 5,000 instruments and associated objects from across the globe without ever leaving their home. While Google Street View is best known for its panoramic views of streets and neighborhoods, the technology also provides a look inside many destinations and heritage sites around the world. To capture the 360-degree images, the Street View team designed a trolley to photograph the interior of notable buildings and landmarks. The images were later stitched together and mapped to their location, enabling online viewers to seamlessly navigate from one room to the next as if they are walking through the space. “Since MIM’s inception we have been committed to using technology to ensure our guests can connect with our collection on a multisensory level and be inspired by the stories that our exhibits tell. Working with Google Street View is a natural extension of that philosophy,” said Bob Ulrich, founder and board chairman of MIM. “Our museum is constantly evolving. While viewers can get a taste of our collection online, there will always be new exhibits, objects and The Musical Instrument Museum is the largest videos for guests to see when they visit museum of its kind in the world. in person.”

Community Garden
By the Numbers
Meet the Three Sisters of the garden
Copper Ridge School teacher and gardening expert Nanette Hubble has some interesting lessons planned at the DC Ranch Community Garden when students return to school in August. One of the classes may be planting a Three Sisters Garden. What is a Three Sisters Garden? It is an ancient method of gardening using an intercropping system which grows corn, beans, and squash crops simultaneously. They are grown in the same area which is typically a rounded mound of soil, often called a hill. Corn is the oldest sister. She stands tall in the center. Squash is the next sister. She grows over the mound, protecting her sisters from weeds and shades the soil from the sun with her leaves, keeping it cool and moist. Beans are the third sister. She climbs through squash and then up corn to bind the crops together as she reaches for the sun. Beans help keep the soil fertile by converting the sun’s energy into nitrogen which spreads into the soil with its roots. As beans grow they use the stored nitrogen as food. If you have a plot in the Garden, you too may want to consider planting a Three Sisters Garden. If you are interested in leasing a plot this fall, contact Community Engagement Director Jona Davis at jona.davis@dcranchinc.com or 480.538.3582 for more information.
DC Ranch is designed to exist in harmony with the surrounding desert environment. As such, thoughtful planning, landscaping, and maintenance continue to guide the community’s values for conservation and environmental stewardship.
