I recently spent time reflecting on what truly makes me happy. Surprising to me, I discovered that the happiest times in my life are when I’m feeling connected—to my family, to my friends, and to my community. The more I thought about this, I realized it went deeper. Once I feel connected, I’m encouraged to engage in more conversations and activities, and to take on a leadership role in how those interactions come about. That’s what makes me happy. It’s easy to connect and engage in DC Ranch as countless leadership opportunities await residents. Do you enjoy learning new things? You can help select topics and presenters for a speakers’ series. Is food your passion? Get involved with the new Foodie Fusion series (read more on page 9). Do you thrive on the camaraderie of being part of a team? Volunteer to organize the DC Ranch running team for the Run for Ryan House at DC Ranch on Saturday, March 1; or a residents’ cycling team to participate in Tour de Scottsdale next fall. Looking for a less physical role? Both the Run and Tour Christine Irish need volunteers to make the events run smoothly. Perhaps the DC Ranch Community Garden at Copper Ridge School is where you’d like to lead. With a grand opening planned for spring, there are many opportunities for you to shape how this wonderful new space can enhance the lives of your neighbors and local students (read more on page 13). Have you recently moved to DC Ranch or are you a long-time resident? Either way, your leadership and insight could enhance our New Resident Welcome program that will take shape later this year. DC Ranch is filled with fun-loving, caring, and interesting people. As executive director of the Community Council, I invite you to join me in taking on a leadership role in the community. What better way to connect, engage, and… be happy! –Christine Irish, Community Council Executive Director

Community Updates
NVM of the year worked hard to implement safety measures in community
Photo: Marta Malloy
Congratulations to the 2013 Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM) of the year, Marta Malloy of Silverleaf village. Malloy has served as the NVM for Veranda Place for three years, keeping her neighbors informed of the happenings throughout the community, and bringing concerns to the Ranch Association and its board of directors. “My goal has been, and will continue to be, to bring our neighbors together,” said
Marta Malloy (right) and husband, Terry (left), who is on the Ranch Association Board of Directors, plan seasonal gatherings in Silverleaf village to connect with their neighbors.
Malloy, who has lived in Veranda Place for three years. “My hope is that the amenities and the family environment that my husband and I moved here for remain safe, friendly, and family-oriented.” Over the last year, Malloy made it a priority to address speed concerns on Thompson Peak Parkway near the entrances to Copper Ridge School. With the support of the Ranch Association and Scottsdale Unified School District, Malloy approached the City of Scottsdale with the safety concerns. The city implemented five new safety measures at the intersection to get vehicles to slow down and to ensure crossing the street is safer for pedestrians. For this and many more reasons, the Ranch Association thanks Malloy. The Ranch Association is grateful for all NVMs, alternates, and volunteers for the time they donate to make their neighborhood feel supported and connected. Currently, three neighborhoods are in need of a representative for their community: Market Street Villas, The Haciendas, and Saguaro Canyon/Wingspan. To learn how to become a NVM or NVM alternate in your neighborhood, contact Ranch Association Communications Coordinator Aprille Slutsky at 480.419.5308.

Community Council nominates new board member
On Nov. 7, the Community Council elected Jill Edwards Resnick to the board of directors. Resnick is a senior vice president and community development investment banker with Bank of America Merrill Lynch. She has served as a Neighborhood Voting Member and is part of the Women’s Leadership Council of the Valley of the Sun United Way. Resnick will serve a three-year term on the Community Council Board of Directors beginning Wednesday, Jan. 1.
Submit your nomination for Ranch Association Board of Directors
The seven-member Ranch Association Board of Directors governs, oversees policy and direction, and assists with the leadership and general promotion of DC Ranch in support of its mission. This year, three board seats are open for election at the Ranch Association’s annual meeting on April 7. The Ranch Association is accepting nominations for interested and qualified applicants for the open seats. A nomination form can be found on DCRanch.com or by requesting one from The Ranch Offices on Market Street. To learn more about the nomination process and responsibilities for serving, contact Ranch Association Executive Director Andy Andrews at andy.andrews@dcranchinc.com.
Protect plants from freezing on cold nights
DC Ranch was strategically planned using native desert planting. These plants and trees have a strong tolerance for extreme heat, as well as for freezing weather. Native plants require less protection from the freezing weather that may occur from late-November to mid-February. Plants and trees that need frost protection are the non-native types that many residents cultivate. To protect frost-sensitive vegetation, plant them near the house utilizing southern or western exposures. Cover frost-sensitive vegetation on nights when the temperature drops below freezing. Remove the cover each morning to allow the sun to warm the soil and plant. Do not prune frostdamaged plants until the end of February or early March. For more information, contact Landscape Manager Gary Whitener at gary.whitener@dcranchinc.com.
Seasonal decorations may hang until Jan. 15
All exterior holiday lighting and decorations should be removed by Wednesday, Jan. 15. Residents are reminded not to leave Christmas trees on the roadside for regular trash collection. The City of Scottsdale offers a tree roundup from Jan. 6-11 (more information on page 11). Trees should be on the curbside by 5 a.m. on the day of collection. For questions, contact Director of Compliance and Security Services Sandee Breiling at sandee.breiling@dcranchinc.com.
MLK Day office hours for DC Ranch facilities
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, The Ranch Offices on Market Street and The Homestead Community Center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, and reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Desert Camp Community Center will remain open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
DC Ranch says goodbye to staff

Ligett managed the production of the Tour de Scottsdale, Run for Ryan House at DC Ranch, and Bark in the Park. Dr. Luke Joh’s philosophy is focused on gentle dentistry, ensuring complete comfort and well-being.
Ring in the New Year with big smiles at CJ Dentistry
Every New Year brings good intentions. With the recent addition of CJ Dentistry at DC Ranch Crossing, Dr. Luke Joh, DDS, has great expectations to create healthy smiles that last a lifetime. Ranch News found out what inspired this well-seasoned dentist to relocate to the neighborhood. Q: First of all, what does CJ stand for? A: Many people ask the same question. CJ stands for my daughter’s initials: Claire Joh. Also, it stands for the initial of my wife’s maiden name and my last name. Therefore, we came up with CJ Dentistry. Q: Please tell us about your background and training. A: I moved to Arizona from California in 2005, and have called Arizona home for eight years. I received my biology degree from UCLA and my DDS degree from USC Dental School in 2000. I practiced in California for five years before moving to Arizona. I belong to American Dental Association (ADA), California Dental Association (CDA), and Arizona Dental Association (AzDA), and attend as many continuing education seminars as possible to keep up with latest dental technology and studies.
Q: What inspired you to open your dentistry practice in DC Ranch? A: DC Ranch Crossing allows me to achieve my goals as a dentist. I have always wanted to be the dentist who lives in the neighborhood as a member of the community. As a resident of nearby Windgate Ranch, I felt that DC Ranch Crossing was the best location for my practice.

Q: Since January is a time for setting resolutions, what would you advise our readers do to maintain healthy teeth and gums? A: There are three things I strongly recommend for maintaining a great smile. First, have an exam and cleaning every six months. Second, have great oral hygiene habits at home, including brushing twice a day for at least two minutes and flossing once a day. Third, eat a healthy diet every day. Eating healthy will always translate to healthy teeth and gums as well as overall body health. The human mouth holds 500 species of bacteria which can lead to decay and gum disease. If you practice these three healthy habits on a regular basis, you will minimize the adverse CJ Dentistry effect of bacteria. Q: What procedures do you offer that go beyond the typical dental office? A: We want to be a dentist for every member of the family regardless of age or condition. We also specialize in cosmetic dentistry and offer treatments like teeth whitening, veneers, and crowns. —Ruth Rosenquist

“Our team is excited to be directly involved in Market Street at DC Ranch and build on its top-tier tenant base,” said Whitestone Chairman and CEO James Mastandrea.
DMB sells Market Street to Whitestone REIT properties In December, it was announced that Whitestone REIT, a fully integrated real estate company that owns, operates, and redevelops community-oriented commercial properties, purchased Market Street at DC Ranch for $37.4 million. “We are pleased to add Market Street to our portfolio of class ‘A’ communitycentered properties in the Phoenix area, and proud to follow in the footsteps of DMB towards the completion and lease-up of the property,” said James C. Mastandrea, Whitestone’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Our business model provides an opportunity for our tenants to successfully and profitably build their businesses by meeting the needs of residents in the surrounding communities, which in turn adds value to the property.” Mastandrea added that Market Street at DC Ranch was not on the market for
sale, but Whitestone began discussing a possible purchase directly with DMB in early summer. DMB and Whitestone’s principals shared similar philosophies with regard to the success related to investing “reputational equity’ in a property, community, and/or business for it to be profitable and reached a purchase/sale agreement. “Market Street will continue to flourish under Whitestone’s ownership,” said Michael Burke, vice president of DMB Commercial Properties. “This transaction is a powerful opportunity for us to sell a successful property to a company with specific expertise in expanding similarly situated neighborhood centers.” What’s more, Whitestone is a publically traded company in which residents can invest. By doing so, they are in essence investing and taking pride-ofownership in Market Street at DC Ranch.

Winter in the Sonoran Desert is a fantastic time to start building healthy habits for the New Year. Studies have shown that just interacting with nature can help lessen the effects of stress and improve health. Fortunately for you, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC) is here to help. MSC has more opportunities than ever to enjoy the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and improve your health and well-being. The public hike has been a staple of MSC’s offerings for years, and January alone offers a number of interesting treks. A great place to begin is with the “Hike Safety in the Preserve” trek on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 8:45 a.m. Meet at the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead and learn basic and advanced hiking techniques. You might also want to try the Bird Walk at Brown’s Ranch on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 7:45 a.m. Leaving from the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead, this walk seeks out some of the year-round avian residents of the Preserve. Finally, the Brown’s Mountain Summit hike on Wednesday, Jan. 29 will take you to the highest elevation in the northern Preserve with fantastic views from the McDowells to the Tonto National Park. The hike starts at 8:45 a.m. from the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead. If you are looking for something new in hiking, how about Yoga in the desert? In this new program, Sherry Zumbrunnen, a yoga instructor in Scottsdale for more than 20 years, will introduce and lead participants in the practice of yoga postures before, during, and after this hike. The trek starts at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead. If hiking is just not your thing, then you should consider biking. MSC is now offering guided mountain bike rides in the Preserve. A 12-mile ride for beginners starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, from 136th Street and Lone Mountain Road. This also offers a great introduction to both mountain biking and the northern areas of the Preserve. Finally, if you want to improve your health and the health of the Preserve at the same time, please consider becoming an MSC Steward. We have many opportunities available, including leading public hikes, desert restoration, citizen scientist projects, and trail construction and maintenance. MSC provides the tools and instruction, you provide the brains and the brawn. For more information on MSC activities or becoming a volunteer, visit McDowellSonoran.org. Until next time, I’ll see you on the trails. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy champions the sustainability of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve for the benefit of this and future generations. As stewards, we connect the community to the Preserve through education, research, advocacy, partnerships and safe, respectful access.

Health symposium offers tips on how to reverse aging Let’s face it: no one wants to age quickly or live with debilitating pain or disease. Now we are living much longer than our ancestors, but are subject to chronic disease and an internal aging process caused by that lifestyle. Our lifestyle is fastpaced and involves quite a bit of sitting, looking down at our phones, our computers, and our really cool iPads. We either live with our body’s little irritations or our bodies adapt to them by causing other problems. Most of the time, we take care of what we see when we look in the mirror. That may include our skin, our hair, and even our pant size. What most people don’t realize is that our posture and alignment of our spine has everything to do with the aging process. We are human beings with so much potential living in a world where there are so many amazing things to do, to say, and to be. By taking care of our spine, nervous system, and joints, we can help reverse the aging process and continue to live with vitality, strength, clarity, happiness, and beauty.

In the next year, inviting new events will take root in the community while also restructuring favorite programs from the past. “Each year, the Community Council’s main goal is to increase the level of engagement at events and consistently raise the standards,” said Community Engagement Director Kimberly Crowther Miller. To appeal to the interests of the community’s adult population, the Community Council plans to implement a speakers’ series. Topics will vary from finance to current events, and each of the four sessions will include a Q & A between the speaker and the audience. Light appetizers and complimentary beverages will also be served. “We’re excited to introduce the speakers’ series since it scored high on our September resident interest survey,” said Community Council Executive Director Chris Irish. “I encourage residents to weigh in on topics and speakers that they’d like to see included.” New programs are also inspired by larger and successful events from the past. Last February, residents enjoyed the Valentines-inspired One Sweet Day which brought an influx of attendees thanks to flamenco dancing, chocolate and wine tastings, and a wide selection of Brazilian food. “The popularity of One Sweet Day was so indicated to the Community Council that residents desired more for a culinary experiences. We simply had to include that event more than once a year,” said Senior Event and Program Manager Gabi Enriquez. As a result, residents can explore an extensive range of guided alcohol and food pairings with the new Foodie Fusion series. On Saturday, Jan. 25, participants will dabble with varying flavors of scotch and cigars paired with sweet and savory appetizers. In May, residents will unearth a range of aromas and spices with tacos and tequila. The upcoming year promises to be one of fresh educational experiences for residents. —Brighid Tomasik

The Wolf of Wall Street is based on the true story of corrupt stock broker Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
Count on more.
DC Ranch Film Club explores Scorsese’s directional legacy “You talkin’ to me?” You bet we are. Acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese has been in show business since the mid-1960s. As a film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film historian, Scorsese is regarded as one of the greatest talents in cinema today. DC Ranch Film Club’s January pick, The Wolf of Wall Street, will be Scorcese’s 27th directional effort. The film is based on the real-life story of corrupt New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort. It portrays Belfort’s rise to wealth in the 1990s, followed by his epic fall from power involving crimes, corruption, and the federal government. “We’re looking forward to a thoughtful conversation about The Wolf of Wall Street,” said group coordinator Susan Grace. “With the help of Dr. Peter Lehman, we’ll expand the discussion to other Scorsese films and more fully appreciate his contributions to the film world.” Dr. Lehman is no stranger on leading discussions of important topics in film. For more than 10 years he has served as Director of Film, Media, and Pop Culture at Arizona State University, and has composed three novels on film criticism. In fact, the film professor is looking forward to Leonardo DiCaprio’s interpretation of Belfort.
Know Your Scorcese? 1. Which film has the infamous quote of Robert Di Niro saying, “You talkin’ to me?” a. Taxi Driver b. Good Fellas c. Shutter Island 2. Including The Wolf of Wall Street, how many Martin Scorsese films has Leonardo DiCaprio starred in? a. Three b. Five c. Eight 3. Which 2002 documentary did Scorcese direct based off this legendary singer? a. Paul McCartney b. Bob Dylan c. Johnny Cash 3. b

In an ad, it might sound like a catchphrase. But at UMB Bank Arizona, it’s a culture. Simply put, “Count on more” means every day we work to be an advocate for you and your commercial and personal banking needs.
“Scorcese has made other films with Leonardo DiCaprio such as Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, and The Aviator,” said Lehman. “It will be interesting to discuss DiCaprio’s adaptation of character in this role compared to others.” Lehman also plans to introduce the film in a way that will prompt a meaningful and in-depth discussion. “No one, for example, can use the word ‘realistic’ in the discussions I lead, or say how much they liked or disliked the movie,” said Lehman. “By blocking those common responses whereby we learn nothing about the movies, but only about someone’s impressions or tastes, I hope to focus on points we can support and issues we can debate.” Along with the discussion of Scorsese’s latest film, Lehman and Grace will explore tropes of Scorsese’s previous films. “The DC Ranch Film Club selected a Scorsese film because of his extensive and diverse body of work,” said Grace, who recommended Scorsese’s first animated-directed film, Hugo, as a part of the DC Ranch’s Film Club Top 10 must-see movies. And although the discussion will intellectually explore the relevance of Scorsese’s work, the monthly group serves a deeper community purpose. “The best part about the DC Ranch Film Club is that while talking about film, we also connect to one another,” said Grace. The club meets on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 5:30 p.m. at Desert Camp Community Center. Please RSVP on DCRanch.com. —Brighid Tomasik

Scottsdale regularly surveys its residents about their overall quality of life and asks for specific feedback about municipal services, public safety, customer service, and resident participation in community events and activities. Residents are asked to complete a survey by visiting ScottsdaleAZ.gov/CitizenSurvey. The information is collected by the National Research Center, and is designed specifically for use by local governments. Because similar surveys are conducted in hundreds of jurisdictions, Scottsdale can compare its results with other cities across the country. Final results of the survey are expected to be released in February.

Little League is on deck for milestone season
Photo: MMLL
What do former President George W. Bush, Bruce Springsteen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Adam Sandler have in common? They are all alumni of our nation’s Little League organization which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Little League was founded in Williamsport, Pa. in 1939 with only three teams. It has become the largest organized youth sports program in the world with 2.4 million boys and girls participating in 83 countries.
League age is determined by a players’s age as of April 30, 2014.

Here in north Scottsdale, McDowell Mountain Little League (MMLL) has been hitting home runs since its inaugural season in 2001. DC Ranch resident Dave Kross is not only president of MMLL, but also a parent of two Little League players and a team manager. Kross has been involved in MMLL since 2009 and says nearly 300 players participate in the league every year. In fact, the league is signing up players now online at MMLLBaseball.com. The in-person verification and registration is set for Saturday, Jan. 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McDowell Center. “MMLL is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers who dedicate countless hours on and off the field,” said Kross. “Little League is about community. It’s learning baseball with your friends on fields that are in your neighborhood.” Kross added that players acquire more than just baseball skills during the season. “It’s about building character, courage, and loyalty,” said Kross. Among other goals last year, Kross’ team worked on a solid handshake with good eye contact. MMLL serves players, ages four to 14, in DC Ranch, McDowell Mountain Ranch, and other nearby communities. All practices and games are held at Copper Ridge School’s athletic fields. The season starts with practices in February followed by opening day in early March with games continuing

The core values of Little League include leadership, citizenship, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
“Little League is all about community.” –Dave Kross until the end of May. A few players are chosen to be on the All-Star team which competes in a district tournament in June. If the All-Stars advance far enough, they will have the opportunity to play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport. “The All-Star season allows the best players to be a part of a very competitive atmosphere,” said Kross. “That is a character building experience in itself.” Those interested in advertising opportunities on team jerseys, on the Copper Ridge School scoreboard, or on the outfield fence can contact Bobby Raines at 602.628.4881.
