Around 1999, early DC Ranch residents developed eight structured community values, including family, environmental stewardship, education, which are continually modelled today by residents, partners, and staff alike. One of these core values that struck a particular cord with me is a sense of community. This value states that, “DC Ranch is a dynamic community in which the residents feel a sense of connection, shared commitment, and mutual responsibility.” As the Community Council’s new facilities and recreation director, it is my responsibility to ensure the community centers and Community Council partnerships accentuate and uphold this value. I strive to help make our community more connected—especially during the summertime when we share these philosophies to create opportunities for residents. DC Ranch is proud to partner with organizations that not only help our community, but the greater Valley as well. Workshops for Youth and Families is a partner of DC Ranch that offers week-long summer workshops for children and teens at The Homestead Community Center. These workshops focus on everything from personal accountability and attitudes to shaping patterns of successful behavior. What’s best about these workshops is that residents receive half off tuition when registering their children for the summer
programs. Turn to page 8 to learn more about our summer programming including our own theatre camps hosted by The Homestead Playhouse. The DC Ranch ComBrad Bishop munity Garden at Copper Ridge School also brings a wide range of community members together. Dozens of residents and community partners came out for the official dedication on March 30. At the event, several residents leased garden plots to cultivate nutritious produce throughout the year. The Community Garden fosters social interaction, encourages self-reliance, and creates opportunities for exercise, education, and fun. Read more about the grand opening of the Community Garden and how you can get involved on page 12. The value of having a sense of community has permeated throughout every program and service offered at DC Ranch. I know that future programs and partnerships at and around the community centers will continue to enhance with the belief and traditions of our community values. Take a plunge with summer hours at community water feature and pool
The water feature near the playground at The Homestead Community Center is a perfect way for families to cool off from the warmer temperatures. The water feature will be turned on from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the late fall. Summer hours for the pool at Desert Camp Community Center are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (From left) Susan Grace, Don Matheson, and incumbent Joe McGarr were elected to the Ranch Association Board of Directors on April 7. The Ranch Association 2014 Annual Meeting overwhelmingly returned one board incumbent and added two new residents to the Board of Directors. Election results retained the seat held by Joesph McGarr, board Treasurer, and will add Susan Grace of Desert Camp village and Don Matheson of Country Club village. Board members serve a two-year term overseeing policies and bylaws protecting the DC Ranch community standards. These board members fulfill the needs and security of residents. Grace is a former Deputy Director for the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission Phoenix branch; she is also an award recipient for volunteer work with the Ranch Association and Community Council. Grace has served numerous past appointments to board committees and pioneered the DC Ranch Film Club. Matheson is founder and team leader for the Matheson Team at RE/MAX Fine Properties and is a Neighborhood Voting Member alternate and volunteer member of the Community Standards Committee. He is a 10-year veteran of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce board; Matheson also co-authored the Realtor Education Program at DC Ranch to create standards for industry professionals marketing community properties. Two-term incumbent Joesph McGarr won re-election and will remain on the board for a third time. McGarr brings 30 years of corporate and senior financial experience, and holds a MBA in finance and economics along with a Bachelors of Science in mechanical engineering. McGarr also resides in Country Club village. Highlights from the April 7 meeting held at The Homestead Community Center included a thank you to exiting board members Terry Malloy and Shawn Seaton. The annual meeting also reported on two new sub-committees charged with developing exterior maintenance standards, and reviewing security and safety. Positive progress in both areas is being made and recommendations to the board are expected soon. The next regular board meeting is Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center.
Donate non-perishables to DC Ranch Food Circle if leaving for the summer
Since the beginning of January, the DC Ranch Food Circle has donated 719 pounds of food to the Foothills Food Bank on behalf of the community. Many residents may be leaving for the summer, therefore please bring non-perishable items to Desert Camp Community Center instead of throwing them away. Items can include canned and boxed goods, diapers, and baby formula. For more information, contact Desert Camp Community Center at 480.342.7178.
Seasonal construction hours change
From now through Oct. 31, construction hours are permitted between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. On Saturday, work hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, contact Director of Compliance & Security Sandee Breiling at 480.419.5301.
Ranch Association honors landscape and maintenance staff
Every year, the Ranch Association celebrates team members who exemplify leadership qualities, dedication to quality service and team work. The 2013 Employees of the Year are Jose Cadenas from the landscaping team and Jose Barcenas from the facilities & maintenance team. The Ranch Association, Community Council, and Covenant Commission appreciates the enthusiasm and commitment that each team member contributes to DC Ranch.
2013 Community Council annual report released
The DC Ranch Community Council builds a connected, welcoming community and provides exceptional programs at DC Ranch. The Board of Directors is pleased to report that the organization ended 2013 in a solid position both financially and programmatically. In summary, the Community Council hosted almost 700 events, activities, and programs which engaged more than 18,000 participants. Total revenue was nearly $3.3 million and expenses totaled less than $3.1 million. The annual report will be mailed to all residents and is also available on DCRanch.com. Questions related to the report may be directed to Community Council Executive Director Chris Irish at 480.419.5326.
Exit cameras installed at all gates
The Ranch Association is in the process of re-installing exit cameras at all manned and unmanned gates. The new cameras will provide both license plate images and an overview of vehicles exiting each neighborhood. The installation process should be complete within the next month.
Basketball hoops on property need prior approval Ranch Association Executive Director Andy Andrews spoke on the recent traffic study and announced increased law enforcement in problem areas, specifically at the south loop of Desert Camp Drive.

Desert Camp Community Center and The Homestead Community Center have a variety of sport courts including basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Residents wanting to install permanent basketball hoops need to gain pre-approval from the Covenant Commission. Non-permanent basketball hoops must meet specific criteria and be pre-approved by the Ranch Association.
Memorial Day office hours for DC Ranch facilities
In observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, The Ranch Offices on Market Street and The Homestead Community Center will be closed. Desert Camp Community Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, May 27.

When you think of Memorial Day, what smell comes to mind? How about steaks and burgers sizzling on the grill? Whether in the backyard, at the neighborhood block party, or even at the cabin, BBQs go hand-in-hand with summertime festivities. And if there’s a person to give advice on selecting the perfect meats for the grill, it would be Brandon Abstender, the Butcher’s Corner Meat Manager at AJ’s in DC Ranch Crossing. With years of experience working with an assortment of meat selections, Brandon has sliced, carved, and prepared a variety of options for his discerning customers to use on the grill. “My number one go-to choice for grilling is a USDA Prime Ribeye steak,” said Abstender. “There is marbelling throughout the entire cut of meat that makes every bite as delicious as the last.” Bacon-wrapped fillets and USDA Choice steaks Brandon’s are also great options. Just because the school year ends this month does not mean that learning stops. In the early summer, before the real desert heat kicks in, is a great time to teach your kids, and yourselves, more about the beautiful McDowell Sonoran Preserve that borders DC Ranch. The City of Scottsdale and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC) have made teaching a breeze through the Preserve’s interpretive trails. The Jane Rau Interpretive Trail opened at the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead. The opening was celebrated on March 22 by Mayor “Jim” Lane, Scottsdale residents, MSC stewards, and Jane Rau herself. Jane is 91 years old and, in 1991, was one of the founders of what is now the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. Jane has worked tirelessly to preserve the natural beauty of the McDowell Mountains, leading to the creation of one of the largest urban nature preserves in the country, and is a lifetime charter director of MSC. The Jane Rau Interpretive Trail is a half-mile loop with minor elevation changes. The trail is hard-packed and barrier free, so it is accessible for strollers, wheelchairs and other walk-assist devices. The trail includes interpretive signs to teach you about the wonders that surround you. The Brown’s Ranch Trailhead is located at the end of Alma School Road, north of Dynamite. You can access another interpretive trail, the Bajada Trail, from the Gateway Trailhead on Thompson Peak Parkway between East Bell Road and Legacy Boulevard. Like the Jane Rau Interpretive Trail, the Bajada Trail is a half-mile, barrier-free trail that is accessible to everyone. Interpretive signage and interactive displays are located along the trail to engage users. For a longer interpretive hike, the Marcus Landslide Trail is a gentle three-mile hike from the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead on the north side of the McDowell Mountains. The hike proceeds through Arizona’s second largest landslide. About 500,000 years ago, a portion of the McDowell Mountains collapsed in a massive rock avalanche. Some 5.5 million cubic meters of debris flowed eastward for about a mile before coming to rest. Interpretive signs along the trail will teach you about the landslide and other geological features. To reach the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, go east on Happy Valley Road past Alma School, turn right onto Ranch Gate and follow the signs to the trailhead. Please note that there is no water at this trailhead. Of course, before taking any hike, be prepared: wear proper footwear, bring plenty of water (in fact, bring more water than you think you’ll need), use sunscreen, and bring a cell phone. I’ll see you on the interpretive trails.

Every year, The Homestead Playhouse invites residents to view a production from a traveling theatre company.
Visiting children’s theatre company takes families to the ‘moon and back’ Childsplay, Arizona’s professional theatre company for young audiences and families, will bring to life the breathtaking risks and unforgettable heroism of the American Space program in its production of “Apollo: To the Moon.” Performing at DC Ranch on Sunday, May 18, the story is told through the lens of a young man’s dream to become an astronaut. The show takes audiences on the journey that gripped the nation with the use of multimedia effects that breathe new life into this vital and exciting story. “The show sends a powerful message to kids that you should never give up on your dreams,” said director Jon Gentry. The Homestead Playhouse is just one stop in an eight-month tour for the cast of “Apollo: To the Moon.” The show is a part of Childsplay’s touring program, which presents nearly 300 performances on the road annually. This program brings professional theatre productions to schools, libraries, and theaters across the state that may not otherwise have the opportunity to see professional theatre. A touring show’s set, costumes, props, and actors all fit into one Childsplay van. The actors are in charge of setting up and running the show themselves.
“Once we arrive at a location, we build the set, put the speakers and projector in place, run our media cables, and set up our computer. Once everything is ready, we do a quick sound check before getting into costume,” said cast member Stephen Hersack when describing a typical day for the touring actors. “From unloading to costume change, the entire process usually takes 45 minutes.” “Apollo: To the Moon” has been on tour since October 2013. The cast will have 124 performances under their belt before their Homestead Playhouse debut. “Some of my favorite experiences of touring are adapting the show in new spaces, seeing all of Arizona, and performing for wonderful children every day,” said cast member Thomas Strawser. “Finding new moments to create on stage with new audiences is something I consistently enjoy.” Doing a show so many times creates a unique challenge for the actors as well. “The challenges of a tour are also what make it great,” said Hersack. “As an actor, doing the same show so many times runs the risk of growing stale, and it’s up to us to find ways to keep it interesting.” —Samantha Johnstone

Using gardening sheers for the ceremonial ribbon cutting, stakeholders of the DC Ranch Community Garden at Copper Ridge School declared it officially open for planting. Dozens of residents, community partners, board members and staff celebrated the official dedication on March 30. The project is a shared vision between DC Ranch and the Scottsdale Unified School District which uses about a third of the garden space for Copper Ridge School classes and activities. “Our students are excited for this new place to learn about plants and nature,” said Copper Ridge School principal Michelle Otstot. “We’ve already planted a bee

and butterfly garden, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.” Several of the 40-plus garden plots have already been leased by residents who are growing everything from tomatoes to Swiss chard. “By leasing this garden plot, I can actually get my daughter to eat her vegetables,” said resident George Plescia. “Tessa is so proud to watch the tomatoes grow and she can’t wait to pick and eat them.” The half-acre garden features several rows of garden beds, a tool shed, solar-powered water station, and composting bins. The intent is for the garden to serve as a catalyst for social interaction, encourage self-reliance, produce nutritious food, and create opportunities for exercise, education, and fun. “Part of the Community Council’s mission is to facilitate a connected community that instills pride in its residents. I can’t think of a better example of a connected community than with this garden,” said Community Council Executive Director Christine Irish. “From running irrigation lines to constructing compost bin, residents, school staff, and DC Ranch team members have worked together to make this garden a reality. That is the true embodiment of our mission.” The grand opening celebration included a master gardener demonstration, garden displays, and live

music to showcase the potential of the new community hub.
