I love to cycle. So much so that I own four bikes. Why? Well, each bicycle is different. Each one is designed and constructed for a different purpose, and that’s what I love about cycling — there’s such versatility in the sport. Whether for a tough off-road excursion or tooling down the street for coffee on a Sunday morning, there’s a bike made for every occasion. This month’s Ranch News issue focuses on the upcoming 11th annual Tour de Scottsdale bike ride. On the morning of October 12, over 2000 riders will line up at the start on Market Street to participate in this event. Every mile benefits the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC). Read on page 6 just how many of the fundraising efforts contribute to the overall mission of MSC. If you are thinking about signing up for Tour de Scottsdale and need a little motivation, turn to page 8 and read Shayna Elizabeth’s story. In June 2011, Elizabeth was riding with friends on a familiar route when she was hit by an SUV. Through all of the difficult recovery, her positive attitude and support network allowed Elizabeth to complete the 2013 IRONMAN Triathlon Arizona. The next goal on the horizon is Tour de Scottsdale. She has also become an advocate for cyclist safety. Through her role with the Not One More foundation, Elizabeth is working to increase awareness for Jona Davis more cyclists on the road. Whether you are “carb loading” for the Tour or just need some fantastic Italian food, read the Marketplace section on page 4 highlighting the opening of Rosati’s Sports Pub at DC Ranch Crossing. The description of the pizza made my mouth water. Page 9 is the interview with James Kramer from FASTER Cycling, the official bike store sponsor of the Tour. We stopped by the state-of-the-art bicycle facility in north Scottsdale and learned all about the business of cycling. Overseeding planned for September and October
In desert communities it is common to overseed Bermuda grass with a suitable cool-season winter ryegrass. This provides a green cover when the Bermuda grass would otherwise turn brown and become dormant for the winter. The lawns at Desert Camp and The Homestead Community Centers and all neighborhood grass areas will be overseeded Sept. 29 to Oct. 24. Residents are asked to keep off the grass during these dates to allow for successful germination. This will help the grass remain a lush green throughout the winter.

All information related to security at DC Ranch can now be found in a user-friendly format on DCRanch.com. Residents using the site report they especially like the one-click stop to forms for gate access, vacation watch and more. In addition to easily locating forms, residents can manage guest lists, retrieve data, and update contact information. DC Ranch Security Director Sandee Breiling attributes the hefty increase in vacation watch requests this summer to the new paperless system. “Residents are using it and we’ve had more vacation forms submitted than ever before,” she said. The site also offers options to add stricter security controls to accounts such as the family gate-pass code or resident photo used by gate personnel for identification purposes. This is especially helpful when residents use alternate transportation other than their registered vehicle. “When our family recently returned from a vacation, we took a taxi from the airport to DC Ranch. We provided our family passcode at the Horseshoe Canyon gate, and it took just seconds for the guard to clear us. The new system worked great,” commented Ranch Association board president Fred Green.
STAFF ANNIVERSARIES
A new feature of the Security section, called “Gate Pass Request,” allows residents and contractors to electronically submit registration for up to three vehicles prior to heading to Westgate to have the gate tags attached. This differs from the “Gate Access.net user account” that permits management of guest, delivery, and contact information. These options are located in the Security section under “Resident Forms.” Another new item in the forms section is “Grant an Authorized Person,” delegating guest authorization to other persons such as immediate family members. A few other items to highlight in the Security section are the “Security Safety Tips” and “Security Notices.” The safety tips are general reminders of ways residents can help secure the community such as locking vehicles parked outside to prevent access to garage door openers. “Security Notices” is where important community information or alerts would be posted. Residents can check that section periodically or when instructed to do so. Continued feedback on the new design from residents is encouraged. As a reminder, the Ranch Association Board of Directors recently voted to standardize speed limits for all DC Ranch property. The maximum speed for main thoroughfares is 25 mph. The revised limit for all other neighborhood streets is 15 mph. There are two exceptions, including the south loop of Desert Camp where the posted maximum is 30 mph and roadways located behind gates managed by sub-associations. New speed limit signs will be erected outside of each neighborhood gate by mid-September. Additional speed signs within the larger community villages will be changed to also conform to the newly approved standards. Initial reports indicate residents are responding to the new battery-powered electronic speed signs installed around the community. The board sanctioned the purchase of three programmable signs to help deter speeding and capture data. This information will identify repeat offenders and determine areas needing better control. Residents want to keep DC Ranch streets safe for school children, pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.

Home resale facts to remember
Prices for homes in Silverleaf are up 36 percent and 15 percent in DC Ranch overall. This is encouraging data considering that the real estate market in the first half of the year slightly favored the buyer. It’s important for owners to seek guidance, especially when thinking of selling a home. State law requires disclosure by the Ranch Association within 10 days once a buyer’s offer is received. Often during this inspection and reporting process, housing items not in compliance with DC Ranch standards (such as unapproved paint colors) can be discovered and interrupt a sales transaction. To avoid any foreseeable delays, The Ranch Association suggests scheduling a complimentary pre-inspection to address any circumstances before placing a home on the market. DC Ranch’s appeal lies in its visual aesthetics, community values, unique history, and natural desert beauty that neighbors wish to preserve. Ranch News met up with Jason Travers, proprietor of Rosati’s Pizza Sports Pub, to learn more about his dining establishment, which recently opened its doors in DC Ranch Crossing.
Q: C an you share a little about Rosati’s Authentic Chicago Pizza, and what sets it apart from other pizzerias?

A: My family has been in the restaurant and bar business since I was born. In 2013, my wife and I decided it was time to open our own business. We chose Rosati’s Pizza because of the systems in place which will enable us to succeed. Q: What prompted your decision to locate in DC Ranch Crossing?
A: While going through the process of opening Rosati’s, my wife and I chose the north Scottsdale territory because we both grew up in Scottsdale. This is our pride, our joy, and our home. Q: W e’ve heard you included a unique sports bar in the design of this location. Can you share details?
A: We wanted to provide our customers with a full bar, including a wide variety of beer, wine, and spirits while dining and watching sports on ten 60-inch screens. What’s unique about the Rosati’s Pizza Sports Pub in DC Ranch is that our premises include take-out, a restaurant, and bar area. We also offer two large patios where guests can enjoy dining al fresco. A huge sliding glass door completely opens up the restaurant to the outdoors and lets customers take full advantage of our weather and beautiful scenery. In addition to take-out, delivery and dine-in, we also offer catering services.

Edge and pop come together: Meet interior designer Lindsey Schultz By Michelle Griffith
In a characteristically industrial space with floor-to-ceiling windows, Lindsey Schultz has surrounded herself with all things that inspire her: imported pieces from Morocco and Indonesia, Mid-Century Modern furnishings, and a conference table made from the drafting table her Dad bought when he was 15 and living in Chicago. Voted Phoenix Home & Garden’s 2014 Young Gun Interior Designer, Lindsey Schultz, with 10 years of design experience, established her eponymous design studio in 2011. This spring, Lindsey Schultz Design set up shop on Market Street at DC Ranch. “When I was at a friend’s new house and found myself creating this list in my head of all the things she should and could do to really make her place great, it dawned on me that this wasn’t my first inner monologue,” said Schultz. When Schultz realized that she had mentally re-designed dozens of homes over the years, her career-change decision was made. A passion for keeping things interesting ignites Schultz in her quest to find the next exciting element to grace her projects. She looks for unexpected, and often edgy, pops of design. Recently she covered the barrel vault ceiling in a Las Vegas dining room with feather patterned wallpaper. Having pushed her clients out of their comfort zone with this
unconventional element, their resistance was soon squelched by their trust in her. Fearless in her design approach, Schultz’s ability to seamlessly blend time periods and aesthetics keeps her clients excited and on their toes. “The gratitude felt when a client falls in love with what you have done for them—I just can’t picture myself doing anything else. Why would I want to?” asked Schultz. They say if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. And for this Young Gun, doing what she was born to do, nothing rings more true.

The 11th annual Tour de Scottsdale is just around the corner on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014. The event kicks off on Market Street and features the 30-mile citizen’s ride and traditional 70-mile ride. The event beneficiary remains the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. The Tour is one of the major annual fundraising events for MSC. So how exactly does the Tour benefit MSC? The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is maintained by a public-private partnership Member FDIC between the City of Scottsdale and MSC. MSC’s stewardship efforts are wide-ranging, from patrol to trail maintenance, public programs and Conservancy-trained volunteers who, over the years, have contributed more than 270,000 hours of services. 1762-3_MFB_PrivateBankBridge_DCRnch.indd 1 2/12/13 3:25 PM MSC is now regarded as a leader in the field of stewardship, and groups from around the country are contacting MSC to learn about its fundraising methods. MSC could not conduct all of these efforts without donations from a variety of sources, including the Tour and its sponsors. Funds from both the Tour’s sponsorships and registration fees are used to support MSC’s continued stewardship of the Preserve. This year, Lexus is the presenting sponsor for the Tour. Oliver Smith Jewelers is sponsoring the 30-mile citizen’s ride; Faster cycle shop, Spooner Physical Therapy, PMT Ambulance, Scottsdale Healthcare, and Safeway are other sponsors. Each of these organizations has generously given donations that directly support MSC’s mission to champion the sustainability of the Preserve for the benefit of this and future generations. Tour funds have been critical to the formation and success of the McDowell Sonoran Field Institute. The Field Institute is the scientific research arm of the Conservancy, dedicated to the study and preservation of the natural and human history of the Preserve. The Tour also provides one of the best examples we have of partnering with our neighbors, in this case DC Ranch. Tour de Scottsdale
The first step is the hardest: Cyclist endures on long road to recovery We all need a reason to get out of bed in the morning. But when it is a matter of learning to walk again, getting out of bed can be one of the most painful and frustrating parts of a person’s day. This morning ritual—which most of us never think twice about—turned into a life-changing goal for Shayna Elizabeth. She was severely injured after being hit by a drunk driver while riding her bike in 2012. It took Shayna months of painful physical therapy just to be able to get out of bed on her own. “On June 30, I was riding with some friends in the Gila Bend reservation and we were all separated by about a half mile. I was hit by a drunk driver and left on the side of the road,” recalled Shayna. After being airlifted to the hospital, Shayna spent nine days in the trauma unit. She sustained injuries all over her body, including a collapsed lung, fractured pelvis, and broken wrists and knee caps. “I could not move any limb for two months. Can you imagine? I literally couldn’t even use my arms to lift myself up in bed,” said Shayna. Through extensive physical therapy, Shayna eventually re-learned how to walk and move her wrists. The process was slow and oftentimes frustrating. As a true athlete, she used event training as a motivator and asked her doctor if she could do the IRONMAN Triathlon in Arizona, 2013. “He said no. I likely wouldn’t even be able to run for a couple years,” said Shayna. “But I was determined to do it. When I signed up for IRONMAN, two guys had to help me walk to registration. I was going to do that

“I tried at least five times but I would get scared and start shaking, terrified,” she said. “Finally, I rode. As my confidence grew, so did my speed.” The next November, Shayna finished the IRONMAN with a time of 12:51. She said training for the race was harder than the race itself, because her body was still healing. Her next challenge is to ride the 70-mile “I was going to do that race. The business of cycling, there’s an art to that By Beatrice Shelton | Community Council
Skinsuits, logos, and sleek bikes— what does it all mean? Cyclists can be found everywhere today, as Arizona has become the ideal haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Tour de France is touted as one of the most supreme athletic competitions in the world. But to the average person driving by droves of cyclist on the road, it has remained an extremely foreign competitive sport. James Kramer, owner of FASTER Cycling in Scottsdale and sponsor of the 11th annual Tour de Scottsdale ride, shed some light on the business of cycling. First things first: The sport of cycling is all about speed and time, so purchasing the right bike is essential. A quality-made frame and its components have small yet essential features which highlight various benefits to a rider. “There are a number of characteristics that change the dynamic design and quality of one particular bike from the other,” said Kramer. “The minimum cost for a simple road bike can start around $1,500, or as much as $10,000 for the best of the best…sometimes even more.” Physically preparing for a longdistance ride is equally as important as the purchase of a bike. Selecting the perfect bike, however, is only one factor in the many nuances that make cycling such a trained, skillful sport. Specifically for Tour de Scottsdale, Kramer recommends about eight solid weeks of training, with three days a week of actual ride time for the 30-mile course. For the 70-mile course, 12 solid weeks of four to five days a week would be ideal for such a lengthy course. Only consider yourself a professional after this: Cycling categories start
at a 5, all the way up to an HC climb, which is the most difficult and challenging. Kramer said, “A license must be issued by USA Cycling and a rider must rank, at a minimum, Category 5 just to be considered a professional cyclist.” So what’s with cycling teams? Once a cyclist has been ranked by USA Cycling—a rider will typically form or join a peloton, also known as a group of cyclists. “Specifically for competition, building a team is a strategic process because cyclists can save energy for their team leader by letting them ride in their slipstream,” said Kramer. A slipstream allows one rider to fall behind the peloton in order to save energy and keep endurance throughout the entire race. However, not all group rides are for competition purposes. “Most cyclists ride in groups for comaraderie and fellowship, specifically for non-competition,” said Kramer. “Some teams are invite-only, but most are open and people can choose by simply researching the personality and characteristics of cycling clubs or teams.” If nothing else: It’s important not to forget the essentials. Before anyone decides to jump on a bike and ride, there are important things to always remember before hitting the open road. “At minimum, a rider should have spare tube(s), tire levers, Allen wrenches, helmet, CO2 cartridges, and an inflator (or a hand pump),” said Kramer. “Water for hydration as well as food for energy is important if the ride and the rider’s endurance require it. Lastly, pack a cell phone, money or credit card, and an ID with emergency contact information.” Next time you see a cyclist on the road, remember the preparation behind each push of their pedal.

Conservation tip: Skip watering cycle after heavy rain

Renovations underway at The Country Club DC Ranch One of the pre-eminent private clubs in the Southwest, The Country Club at DC Ranch is getting even better. It is undergoing a renovation of its clubhouse and golf course. Total restor ation is set to be completed by early November 2014. When it comes to event day, no amount of training and preparation can make up for poor nutrition or choosing the wrong pre-ride meal. The bad results? Winding up with an upset stomach. One of the most important things you can do before Tour de Scottsdale is to practice an eating plan weeks in advance. Stick to eating a well-balanced meal, and avoid introducing new food before a ride. For proper digestion and to avoid potential stomach discomfort, online resources recommend that you plan to eat three to four hours before the start of the ride. Aim for a meal that’s high in carbohydrates. A bowl of oatmeal with a banana, or a bagel and some juice are common staples of a smart pre-ride meal. Also remember to avoid caffeine, which can make you feel sick before the ride. The energy from dinner and breakfast should be enough to get you through the ride, but keeping an energy bar in your cycling jersey for a snack can curb your hunger during the ride. Increasing your water intake a few days before a cycling ride is crucial for helping your body stay hydrated throughout the event. Drink
