“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” This quote, from L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables describes exactly how many of us feel.

During the month of October, we venture outside to enjoy cool mornings and evenings. We start to wear fall colors and decorate for Halloween. Driving becomes more pleasurable as we open our car Chris Irish enjoying the pumpkin harvest at the windows and enthusiastically breathe in the beginning of fall.

October is a wonderful month, especially in DC Ranch.

The Spotlight Speaker Series kicks off on Oct. 22 when TV celebrity Robin Sewell shares her Arizona stories.

Read about it on page 10. For those who love our state, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

DC Ranch Community Garden will celebrate its first-ever fall harvest to include lots of pumpkins. If the idea of gardening interests you, plots are available for lease. October is the perfect time to plant lettuce, beans, beets, broccoli and garlic. DC Ranch’s garden coach Tyler Storey helps make the process easy and rewarding.

October also finds DC Ranch residents raising funds for Elevate Phoenix. The nonprofit works with youth to strengthen character, empower knowledge and elevate relationships. Hosted by golf professional and DC Ranch Country Club resident Tom Lehman, the Weekend Jetaway Culinary Casino Classic will be held in a private jet hangar at the Scottsdale Airpark. See page 9 for more information. Due to construction at the Country Club, another DC Ranch residents’ philanthropic endeavor, DC Ranch Rally for the Cure, will be taking a hiatus this fall.

But as you’ll be proud to read on page 8, it has raised almost a half million dollars to fight breast cancer.

Outdoor dining is another October favorite. Two new venues on Market Street, The Living Room Wine Café & Lounge and Jalapeño Inferno, offer comfortable patio seating to enjoy a glass of wine or dinner. More details are on page 4.

And of course, October ends with a big finale – Halloween. Kids growing up in DC Ranch love Halloween. With a Spooky Seas designed just for them, they traverse the grounds of Desert Camp Community Center enjoying both tricks and treats! Parents and grandparents join in the fun, as it’s hard to resist the charm of smiling jack-o’-lanterns.

DC Ranch is a very special place to live. Early in development, stakeholders and residents decided upon specific underlying community values to uphold and build the DC Ranch foundation. One apparent value is the commitment to preservation of the natural surrounding Sonoran Desert and McDowell Mountains. Ever notice how the homes and grand hillside estates blend into the environment surrounded by an abundance of saguaros and native desert plants? From the color scheme of homes to the placement of cobble and mulch on the desert floor, this commitment to authenticity and environmental stewardship is precisely planned. The elements creating this unique design can differ greatly from other master planned communities. The DC Ranch aesthetic is atypical.

Understanding the intricacies makes for a beautiful one-of- a-kind result.

Consider what DC Ranch uses for landscaping in the Desert Camp and Country Club villages. It’s referred to as “desert pavement.” Landscapers are accustomed to applying decomposed granite in thick layers to cover the underlying soil. But that is not the look of “planned authenticity” intended for DC Ranch. Instead, these villages use desert pavement to gradually transition from natural open spaces to private residential yards without obvious boundaries. Desert pavement consists of large desert cobble about two to eight inches in size, thinly applied two-inch decomposed granite, and natural, wind-blown native plant debris. This attention to the smallest of details is one of many

reasons DC Ranch is so appealing. It is a thoughtfully crafted community with strong aesthetic and visual character.

The Ranch Association and Community Council are helping to communicate the DC Ranch brand by means of new resident brochures and short videos, explaining some of the community’s more complex design concepts. Topics include: planting zones, arroyo design, modifying or painting your home, desert pavement, wall mounted equipment and the different types of property inspections offered. The new educational tools are designed to provide residents helpful tips on application of the DC Ranch style. The brochures are available in both community centers and at The Ranch Offices on Market Street. The video clips are posted on DCRanch.com in the Community Management section and listed by topic of interest.

Residents are encouraged to utilize these new resources to make home improvement projects or landscape changes easier. All exterior modifications must adhere to the DC Ranch design principles to preserve its legacy for future generations.

This will allow for successful germination of the new wintergrass that was overseeded by the Ranch Association. In desert communities it is common to overseed bermudagrass turf with a suitable cool season winter ryegrass. This provides a green cover when the bermudagrass would otherwise turn brown and become dormant for the winter.

Bulk trash pickup is Oct. 27

Scottsdale waste management collection is scheduled for the last week of October. Residents should have bulk trash curbside no later than 5 a.m. on the day of pick up. Place piles in your normal trash collection location. The city will not collect waste placed on the street, landscaped medians or common areas. Also, please do not use the community center dumpsters for disposal of large items. For additional details, please call Solid Waste Management at 480.312.5600.

Complete online forms for guest parking

With the holiday season approaching and our gorgeous winter weather returning, friends and family may want to visit. If your house guests require extra parking, submit a parking exemption pass found in the Security section on DCRanch.com. This allows guest parking on the street for up to three days. Otherwise, parking on the street between 2 and 6 a.m. or in alleyways is not permitted.

New speed signs collecting data

The Ranch Association is rotating three programmable, battery operated speed signs around the community to help curtail speeding. The signs indicate that the majority are driving responsibly however about a third of residents have been clocked at exceeding speeds. The data will help identify when most speeding occurs and determine areas in the community that need improved control. Standardized maximum speeds are 25 mph for main roads and 15 mph for smaller streets. The Association also increased the number of standard speed signs throughout the community reminding drivers to slow down.

Since the age of three, DC Dance AZ owner Christie Wieger, has had a lifelong passion for the art of dance.

After opening its doors on Market Street in July, DC Dance AZ has made a name for itself by providing Ranch residents with a niche Wieger believes was missing in DC Ranch.

“Our dance studio offers instruction from teachers who each have more than 20 years of industry experience,” Wieger touted.

Wieger points out that her dance studio inspiration was sparked after watching her daughter dance in other classes. She recognized early on that technique-based training was an important element missing in many classes and believed a well-rounded dance education was essential to any dancer’s success.

“From individuals looking for preprofessional guidance or simply the recreational benefits of dance, we offer nationally recognized programs starting at 18-months on up to adults.”

DC Dance AZ believes that dance class isn’t just for children or dancers wanting to learn special techniques, but that it

Tour de Scottsdale dollars impact the future of MSC

By Jace McKeighan | Conser vancy steward and DC Ranch resident The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC) is a non-profit conservation organization that relies on more than 500 volunteers to help protect and promote the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

The goal is for future generations to enjoy the ecological treasure of the Preserve the same way we do today.

From trail expansion, guiding hikes, education and research—we rely heavily on the continued generous support of our many financial donors, including the funds raised by the Tour de Scottsdale.

Last year the Tour raised nearly $50,000 for MSC, which is a substantial amount by any measure. Funds generated by the Tour are absolutely critical to MSC’s mission, especially as the Preserve has grown over the years.

Our Improvements: In 2013, the Preserve (which is the largest urban preserve in the Americas) added 6,393 additional acres of land which opened a Member FDIC new major trailhead and expanded trail system. The Preserve now encompasses about 47 square miles, or about one2/12/13 3:25 PM quarter of the City of Scottsdale’s total land area.

Stewards devoted almost 40,000 hours to patrolling and maintaining trails, welcoming visitors, educating the community through hikes, outreach programs, school tours, and other key activities. Many of these MSC activities could not continue as they have without funding from sources like the Tour.

which serves as the basis for an ecological resource plan that will help guide its future management.

Current Advancements: More work is required to improve our understanding of the Preserve. To that end, a number of other projects are underway that will advance our knowledge of plant communities, human impacts, and other natural features. We are now developing monitoring programs, partnering with universities, state agencies, and non-profit organizations to bring broad expertise and science to our management challenges. Training interested stewards to create an innovative citizen-science program to do in-depth scientific work in the Preserve, is important to MSC. Tour funds continue to engage us in these unique efforts.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Members of the organizing committee helped register guests at the 12th annual DC Ranch Rally for the Cure.

nity outreach programs that have worked to fight breast cancer on all fronts: in laboratories, in doctor’s offices, and in local communities. Both Pennewell and Simpson like to remind supporters that research will continue to reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer. There is hope on the horizon for more medical procedures that help reduce fatalities from all types of cancer.

The tradition is expected to continue well into the future, with an event that will continue to evolve. Plans are already being discussed for the 2015 event and Club members will be provided with an opportunity to continue supporting the cause through financial contributions in a “non-event” this year.

The Country Club at DC Ranch community has a long history of supporting the fight against breast cancer.

Back in the early 2000’s, a small group of women began the tradition of hosting an annual “DC Ranch Rally for the Cure” event. Those first few years involved a ladies golf event on a weekday morning followed by lunch at the Club and a small silent auction. The idea developed traction and has evolved and grown through the years in both size and impact. Tennis was added, the event was moved to a Sunday, men were encouraged to participate, and the silent auction grew In November 2013, the community held the “12th Annual DC Ranch Rally for the Cure” with more than 150 participants. Dozens participated in tennis, while many more simply joined the festivities at the gala dinner and “shopped” at the large silent auction.

Janet Pennewell and Pat Simpson co-chaired the 2013 event with a committee of more than 25 Country Club members and strong support from the Club’s general management and staff.

Local residents and merchants helped make the event a success by sponsoring holes, making auction donations, and purchasing raffle tickets. The 2013 event raised nearly $54,000 to support breast cancer research and education through Susan G. Komen Rally for the Cure.

That brought the total raised through the Club’s Rally events over the years to more than $430,000.

For the past five years, PGA golf superstar and Country Club resident Tom Lehman has been working to elevate.

And he isn’t referring to his golf game.

“In 2009, I had the great honor to become a founding board member of Elevate Phoenix, a unique and often lifechanging program for Arizona youth,” said Lehman. “The initiative provides inschool teaching; after-school mentoring/ tutoring; career instruction/post-secondary preparation; character, life skills and peer leadership development; community service; adventure activities; and reading/literacy improvement within urban public schools.”

Founded in Denver as Colorado Uplift, the model worked effectively with urban youth for more than 30 years. In line with Colorado’s success, the Phoenix organization’s primary mission, according to Lehman, is to strengthen character, empower knowledge and elevate relationships. Its success is directly measured by the success of its youth participants. Currently, the organization reports a 98 percent graduation rate and 90 percent post-secondary rate among participating youth in Arizona.

“The heart of our success is the work of our team—primarily the staff members who serve as teachers, mentors, and life coaches to students over multiple years.

Teacher mentors are available twentyfour-seven,” said Lehman. “These oneon-one connections make in-school learning more effective. As a part of this relational approach, Elevate Phoenix standardizes its learning objectives and equips staff to meet the varied learning needs of their students.”

Currently, Elevate Phoenix is serving 4,500 local students at a cost of just $222 per student.

As the nonprofit organization developed, it was supported wholly by contributions from businesses and civic organizations. However, with an eye toward growing the number of children it serves, Lehman and Elevate Phoenix are pleased to announce the launch of its first-ever signature fundraising event, the Weekend Jetaway Culinary Casino Classic, presented by AXA Advisors Southwest.

As host of “Arizona Highways” she travels the state to highlight its unique destinations, people and experiences. Before Rosie the Riveter, there was Annie Oakley

Unsung heroes are underlying characters in American history. Many go unnamed, while others remain simple whispers of our past.

Before the suffrage movement or a national platform for feminists to speak freely, there was a sharpshooter blazing her own trail for women: Ohio native Annie Oakley. Her life served as a prelude to conversations that would shape our nation’s future in many ways.

Inspired by the tales of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, Desert Camp resident Jeffrey Marshall became intrigued by Annie Oakley and her life as a rough and tumble pioneer of the 19th century.

“Buffalo Bill had a great story to tell – but I learned quickly that Annie Oakley was the true star of his show,” said Marshall. “She was a woman who could compete with the best of any man.”

This spring, Marshall published Little Miss Sure Shot: Annie Oakley’s World, which is a historical novel about the life of Annie Oakley. The book is available through Amazon or AnnieOakleynovel.com.

Having worked as a writer, magazine editor and contributor to The New York Times, New Jersey Monthly and Crain’s New York Business, Marshall wanted to write a historical novel that captured the intricacies of a person’s life without having to develop an original storyline.

The novel is based largely on actual events of Annie Oakley’s life. However, Marshall reimagined many of these events through conversations and meetings with famous figures such as

P.T. Barnum and Thomas Edison, among others, as well as places Annie could have seen and experienced.

“I quickly became fascinated by stories of Annie Oakley through my research on Buffalo Bill,” Marshall said.

Annie’s starring role in Buffalo Bill’s traveling show is what catapulted her to international fame in the late 1880s.

Buffalo Bill Cody himself is an important figure in the novel, too, as he was responsible for identifying her talents as a sharpshooter.

But a far more central and important figure, often overlooked, was Annie’s husband and manager of 50 years, Frank Butler. Their loving marriage was by far the most important relationship in Annie’s life.

Marshall recounted that, “Annie and her husband never had children. In fact, her life was so completely opposite from that of a traditional woman of her time.

They both lived a different life, and her husband was very supportive of that.”

Annie Oakley’s legend lives on to this day, even though the height of her Kyko ad

fame goes back well over a century. She maintained her amazing shooting skills even into the last years of her life. And like Amelia Earhart or Babe Didrikson Zaharias, she was a woman ahead of her time – competing and making an indelible mark in a field dominated by men.

Master Garden Coach joins DC Ranch Certified Desert Landscaper, Master Gardener and a member of the International Society of Arboriculture, Tyler Storey, has been named “Garden Coach” of the DC Ranch Community Garden at Copper Ridge School and will serve as a resource to all gardeners of DC Ranch.

“People move here from all over the country and they have a lot of trouble adapting,” said Storey. “Gardening in the desert is not difficult, but it is different.”

Storey helped plant his first tree at the age of four, and has been gardening and landscaping ever since. In his own gardens, he has made almost every mistake possible, and a few that should have been impossible (ask him sometime about The Adventure of The Great Sinking Pecan Tree). Storey was senior program coordinator

for Urban Horticulture at the University of Arizona’s Maricopa County Cooperative Extension, where he helped teach the finest group of volunteer Master Gardeners in the state.

Storey will have Saturday “garden hours” at The Garden to meet with individual gardeners, answer questions and provide assistance: Saturday, Oct. 11 | 9 – 11 a.m.
