Ranch News Highlights

How much community is there in our community?

Photo: Community Council

Think for a moment how much better it is to live in a great community than to live in a nice place. Let’s examine for a moment what it takes to transform a nice place to live into a great community. There are three principle requirements for a great community: the infrastructure that enables a community to form, common purposes and standards and, most importantly, you. DMB, the developer of DC Ranch, got our community started by creating sidewalks, paths and Tom Headley trails for walking and biking to get people out into our community. They created parks, community centers and country clubs so people have a place to gather, meet and play. They knew that you don’t meet new friends or create a community when passing each other in cars or by sitting at home watching TV. DMB also started DC Ranch by creating community-wide standards for the architecture and upkeep of the community. These standards apply to common areas like parks and community centers and also apply to the landscaping and the design and upkeep of individual homes. By doing our part to maintain the beautiful environment we all bought into, each of us helps ourselves and our neighbors; which is another way to say that community-wide standards help support our community. The Community Council at DC Ranch built and continues to build the community infrastructure by sponsoring events and activities, by facilitating clubs and groups, and by managing our two community centers. We have activities for children, families, and adults. There’s the upcoming PJs & Pancakes event in December, Eggstravaganza in the spring and Homestead Playhouse all year long. DC Ranch produces the Tour de Scottsdale and puts on the Spooky Carnival for Halloween, community garden and film club. There are a number of ways to get involved as a participant or in a leadership role. Which brings me to you: there needs to be a you in our community—without you, DC Ranch is just a nice place to live. Please step up and join in to help have a great community. —Tom Headley, Community Council board president

Spotlight on Ranch Association

3 Community Updates

Neighbors thankful for community outreach By Terri Raimondi | Ranch Association

Residents Sharon and Ed Devine are feeling joyful this holiday season. Ask and they’ll tell you that the Ranch Association and local law enforcement really stepped up efforts to help them. The Devine family resides in the northern tip of DC Ranch, where they experienced continual problems with an adjacent cul-de-sac in a neighboring community. Excessive parking and trespassing from the cul-de-sac posed a nuisance and safety threat. Sharon Devine asked for help from the Ranch Association board of directors. “I have already witnessed a ticket given out for parking and police officers responding to a parked/standing vehicle; I am more than thrilled! My entire block has benefitted.” said Sharon Devine. Thanks to combined efforts of the Ranch Association and local law and traffic enforcement, their problem was solved. Devine said, “I know what DC Ranch Security did for me and my neighborhood was not an easy task.” She especially singled out Andy Andrews, Ranch Association executive director and Lt. Todd Muilenberg of the Scottsdale police department. Muilenberg commented, “Andy Andrews knows how we feel about forming solid relationships with our community. He learned of the problem and asked for our help. Together we brainstormed and came up with a plan that involved the PD and Traffic Engineering.” Police increased patrols in the area and new signage was posted. “It was a good team effort”, said Muilenberg. “I’m glad to know that together we solved an issue that had been negatively impacting our residents.” Andrews commented, “The spirit of DC Ranch is alive year round and helping each other is not just reserved for the holidays.”

Gobble up news of the 2014-2015 Neighborhood Voting Members Make your voice heard. Help build the foundation that makes DC Ranch unique by electing your Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM). There are 43 positions to fill for full representation, and the deadline to cast your vote is nearing. There are four easy ways to cast and return your ballot: E-mail to Terri.Raimondi@dcranchinc.com Fax 480.513.1505 Mailed to the Ranch Offices on Market Street In person drop off

Ballots are mailed in early November and must be returned no later than 5 p.m. Nov. 17. NVMs are vital to the community. They are volunteer advocates for their fellow neighbors and responsible for electing the board of directors. They are the direct liaisons between residents and the Ranch Association, helping to rectify issues and facilitate change when needed. NVMs are your partners to provide feedback. They speak frequently with residents to grasp the pulse of each neighborhood and relay the majority view to the board for action or advisement. NVMs are committed to attending monthly board meetings and greeting newcomers. They serve one neighborhood during their one year term and must own in the community they wish to represent. Look for an announcement of next year’s list of NVMs on DCRanch.com just before Thanksgiving.

Deck the halls, walls and more!

‘Tis the season to be festive with outdoor décor and colorful themes to celebrate the holidays. Seasonal decorations may be displayed through Jan. 15, 2015. And next year dust off those boxes earlier as decorations are now permitted beginning Oct. 1.

Traveling out of town? Fill out a vacation watch form

If you are planning to travel out of town for the holidays, please fill out a vacation watch form found in the Security section on DCRanch.com. This will notify DC Ranch Security to keep an extra eye on your home while you’re away. Residents are encouraged to also tell neighbors and arrange for them to monitor your home. Let them know your vacation plans and whether any deliveries are expected during your absence.

Community Council and Ranch Association to approve budgets

The DC Ranch Community Council oversees the community centers, paths, trails, monthly newspaper, various social clubs and events aimed at connecting residents. The Ranch Association operates security and maintains common area landscaping, facilities and neighborhood amenities. Each board will approve their budget; Nov. 6 for Community Council and Nov. 17 for the Association. Residents and commercial property owners will receive budget and assessment details via mail by Dec. 1.

Please note holiday facility and office closures

The DC Ranch teams wish residents and their families a happy and safe holiday season. In observance of Thanksgiving, The Ranch Offices on Market Street and The Homestead Community Center will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27, and Friday, Nov. 28. Additionally, The Ranch Offices will close early on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at noon. Desert Camp Community Center will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27, and reopen on Friday, Nov. 28, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Normal business hours for all facilities will resume on Monday, Dec. 1. In observance of Christmas, The Ranch Offices on Market Street, Desert Camp Community Center, and The Homestead Community Center will be closed Dec. 24 and 25. They will be open until noon on Dec. 31 and closed Jan. 1 for the New Year. Normal business hours for all facilities will resume on Friday, Jan. 2. Office closures are posted on the DCRanch.com community calendar.

Wrap up the holidays with bulk trash pick-up

Mark your calendar for bulk trash pick-up on Monday, Dec. 1, and Monday, Dec. 29, to close out the year. Items must be placed outside by 5 a.m. on the day of pick-up. The City of Scottsdale will not pick-up items which are placed on the street, landscaped medians, or common areas. Please call Solid Waste Management at 480.312.5600 for more information.

Reserve a DC Ranch Community Center for your next event

Did you know you can host a birthday party, anniversary celebration, or family reunion at a DC Ranch community center? This amenity is just one of the benefits of being a DC Ranch resident. Due to the popularity of these types of events, new guidelines have been developed to better serve all residents. For more information or to make a reservation, please contact Beth Overton at 480.538.3583.

McDowell Sonoran Conservancy

Holiday hikes with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is already upon us. That means we’ve reached the time of year where packing on the pounds is easy. One of the best ways to stay fit during the holidays, is to put on your pack and get out into the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Like every year, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is making it easy for you to stay active. On Thanksgiving morning, join MSC’s More Pie Please! Hike. Burn off calories with family and friends on this fitness excursion and you won’t feel a bit guilty about having that second piece of pie. The hike gets under way at 8 a.m. at the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead (124th Street north of Via Linda), appropriate for anyone 8 years or older. Plan for 1.5 hours to cover a 2.5 mile loop with a 250-foot elevation gain. If you need more time to digest, the Granite Mountain to Balanced Rock Hike begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30. Leaving from the Granite Mountain Trailhead (136th Street north of Dynamite), this hike explores the unique northern area of the Preserve. Hike among lush vegetation as you skirt Granite Mountain and make your way to an astonishing rock formation. This hike will take about 2.5 hours and cover 4.5 miles with no significant elevation gain. It will be a great way to wrap up your holiday weekend. Speaking of wrapping, December presents some fantastic hikes as well. On Dec. 23, MSC’s Mistletoe and Holly Hike allows you to discover the hidden, festive desert connections to the winter holidays. The hike gets under way at the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead (128th Street south of Dynamite) and covers 3 miles. Ages 10 and older are welcome. On Christmas morning, the Christmas Day Hike leaves from the Gateway Trailhead (Thompson Peak Parkway between Bell Road and Legacy Boulevard) and travels the Gateway Loop in the heart of the McDowells. The views from the Gateway saddle that wait, are a timeless gift for everyone to enjoy!

Before undertaking any hike, it’s important to be prepared. At a minimum, wear proper footwear, bring plenty of water (even in winter) and bring a cell phone. The best item to have in an emergency is a fully-charged cell phone. Learn about these and many other hikes and events at mcdowellsonoran.org. Just click on the Events link in the upper right corner for the complete calendar. We look forward to seeing you on the trails this holiday season. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy champions the sustainability of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve for the benefit of this and future generations. As stewards, we connect the community to the Preserve through education, research, advocacy, partnerships and safe, respectful access.

The Homestead Playhouse presents fall production this November By Molly Kurtz | Community Council Remember the boy who wouldn’t grow up? John and Michael Darling love to hear their sister, Wendy, tell the story of Peter Pan. However when she grows too old to live in the nursery, Peter comes to keep their imagination alive by flying the Darlings off to Never Land. During their epic adventure, they meet Tinkerbell, the Lost Boys, mermaids and the infamous Captain Hook. Based on the Disney film and J.M. Barrie’s enchanting play, Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. is a fresh take on the legendary tale about Peter Pan. Musical numbers include new versions of classic Disney songs like: “You Can Fly,” “The Second Star to the Right,” “Following the Leader,” and “Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life for Me.” Directed by Ashley Laverty, an M.F.A candidate in Arizona State University’s Theatre for Youth program, shares her views on this year’s production. What is your vision for Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. and how is it different from the original storyline? Disney’s version of the show lends itself to allowing actors, and the audience, to use their imaginations. Pirate swords are replaced with plungers, sticks, umbrellas and maybe plastic flamingos;

the Indian Braves are island explorers complete with sunblock smeared faces.

What do you hope the audience leaves the performance with? I hope the audience enjoys being swept away in our giant game of make believe! Throughout the script, there are clues and hints that Wendy, John and Michael’s journey to Never Land is happening during their own playtime and I’d like to keep that ambiguous. Maybe to one audience member, the adventure is an after school play date with the neighborhood kids; to another audience member, Never Land is a real place. Perhaps an audience member will go home after the show and turn their backyard swing set into their very own make believe. What has been your experience working with the kids from The Homestead Playhouse? I’m very impressed with the level of commitment, enthusiasm and talent the cast possesses. They come to rehearsal prepared and willing to jump in and try out any wacky character choice or movement ideas I have. They are creative and passionate youth and I am constantly impressed and inspired during my time with them.

Fun facts about this year’s fall production

• The Homestead Playhouse opens its 9th season with Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. • The cast is made up of 42 youth, ages 7 to 15 years old • Rehearsing time for the play was 11 weeks, 125 hours

Holiday Tradition Continues

Lindsey Schultz Design

Entertain like a designer By Lindsey Schultz | Lindsey Schultz Design

With the onslaught of resources giving you advice on how to make your home beautiful for holiday gatherings, I prefer to get to the root of what creates a successful soiree, and leave the design ideas on how to set a beautiful table to the bloggers. As an interior designer, proper space planning is at the forefront of everything I do. How you arrange your entertaining space is fundamental to a successful party. Your furniture configuration for everyday living is not necessarily ideal for entertaining. Likely your arrangement is set for TV viewing, but this is not what your guests will be doing. Shop your home for additional seating that can be brought in to create several smaller conversation vignettes within the larger spaces. When not having a formal dinner, your dining chairs are great for this. However, avoid the temptation to simply line the perimeter of the room. Include small side tables, ottomans and accent pillows to make comfortable and intimate configurations that will enhance easy conversation. Proper space planning also pertains to what you are serving at your party. Now that you have paid such careful attention to where your guests will be relaxing, it’s time to pay attention to what you are serving and how guests will move through your home. It works well to designate different areas of your entertaining space to the various food and beverages being served. Place appetizers and main courses on the dining table, desserts on the breakfast table and drinks on the patio. I like to include two separate stations for this, one for alcoholic and cold beverages and one for coffee. Not

only does this keep guests moving around and enjoying all of your beautifully decorated living spaces, it enhances the social interaction. When space planning for your tables, think vertically. Varying heights of food and beverage placement creates interest and elevates the experience of dining buffet-style. Not all of your height needs to come from the tabletop itself. Decorations hung from above the table create instant drama and free up valuable serving space. Success is based on a strong foundation. Follow these tips and embellish with your own person style for a memorable holiday gathering that will surely put you on the must-attend list for next year. Cheers!

Family Activities

Decorate, Eat … and Be Merry for the Holidays By RaeAnne Marsh

Gingerbread houses have a universal appeal, and making one can be a fun activity for kids of all ages, even the youngest ones can help add the candy decoration. Although commonly associated with Christmas, they can be constructed and decorated to suit other holidays of this season by selecting appropriate colors and shapes for the candies to adorn the structure. A large, flat cake dish makes a good base. An alternative can be a cookie sheet or a sturdy piece of cardboard, wrapped with aluminum foil. Graham crackers are easy to use for the walls and roof of the house. Standard size is four crackers long and two crackers wide. To hold the walls up, to cement them together, and to affix the roof, use liberal dollops of an icing that becomes stiff when it dries.

GINGERBREAD HOUSE ICING

Spend the holidays at the beach, in the mountains, or in Sin City

INGREDIENTS: 2 egg whites, unbeaten 1½ cups sugar ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar 1/3 cup cold water Dash of salt 1 teaspoon vanilla PREPARATION:

THE FASTER, MORE AFFORDABLE CHARTER 800.610.2940 • eclipseprivatejet.com

Combine first five ingredients in the top of a double boiler and beat one minute. Heat water in the bottom half of the double boiler. While the water is boiling, beat the egg white mixture constantly until stiff peaks form (6-7 minutes). Pour into a mixing bowl. Add vanilla. Beat to spreading consistency (about 2 minutes).

Use most of the icing to build the house. Let it dry and harden. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap to keep the remainder of the icing moist. When ready to decorate the house, spread icing thinly to hold sprinkles and small candies in place. Candies such as jelly beans can be cut in half, and the sticky side pressed into place. Heavy candies such as life savers are best used around the base or on the roof of the house as their weight can cause them to fall off of vertical surfaces.

By the Numbers

DC Ranch Milestones “DC Ranch is home to over

From record turnout for Playhouse auditions to updated community centers, DC Ranch continues to make strides to improve the community. Here are milestone moments from DC Ranch staff on their biggest accomplishment of 2014. “The Community Council spent significant time this year reviewing our New Resident Welcome program. It now consists of five touch-points spread throughout a one-year period, each tailored to

19,000 trees, 20 acres of turf and 126 irrigation controllers.

During the monsoon storms in September, our landscape crew worked tirelessly to make sure there were minimal damages made throughout the community. We were successful in our efforts and because of that, much of what we love about DC Ranch remained in pristine condition.” —Gary Whitener, Landscape Manager “Custom home building in DC Ranch and Silverleaf has been very active in 2014, with

better welcome, engage and connect with our newest residents.”

—Chris Irish, Community Council Executive Director

“The Ranch Association conducted an extensive survey of residents this year and the feedback focused on speeding. I’m happy to report that by year’s end,

new standardized speed limit signs are posted in all neighborhoods.

Country Club Village is 87 percent built or under construction, and Silverleaf is 44 percent built and under construction. This has been great for the DC Ranch community.” —Jan Baratta, Senior Design Review Manager

for the spring and fall productions, produced by The Homestead Playhouse this year, which is the

largest turnout to date!

We’re continually collecting data through electronic signage to monitor the situation. We’ve received many positive comments.” —Andy Andrews, Ranch Association Executive Director

more than 50 custom homes under construction.

“More than 100 aspiring actors auditioned

This is such a feat for us because it provides children with a fun and safe environment to express their love for theatre and arts.”

—Molly Kurtz, Arts & Theatre Coordinator

“One of our goals is to keep our amenities in DC Ranch in top condition and to enhance the experience our residents receive when they visit our facilities.

In 2014, we increased Wi-Fi speed at both community centers for residents and their guests; installed new touchscreen interface A/V systems at The Homestead Community Center; resurfaced pool deck and built in BBQ; and converted one basketball court to an official Pickleball court at Desert Camp Community Center.” Kyko ad
