Yes, our challenges are real. We may be sailing in some uncharted waters but there are charts available to help us all navigate our way to more profitable times. We could simply declare ourselves adrift and allow ourselves to label ourselves victims or we can stand strong and say, “This economy presents opportunities to learn and grow and make myself and my business stronger and better.”

Let’s begin with some basic realities. Ninety-four percent of Americans are employed and earning wages at a rate not dissimilar from their past wages. The vast majority of people live with traditional mortgages in homes we can afford. Our businesses have a stable base of loyal customers on which we can build for the future. All of the rest is simply attitude. A positive attitude will produce better results.

Get back to basics! Now is the time to work on your business. Reach out to your customers.

Ask them what you can do to improve your service or product. Treat every encounter as a business building experience where you learn new skills, improve your customer service and embrace ways of doing your business smarter.

Build your networks! Just as you must return to your perennial customers and thank them for staying with you, you must also work to bring new business in the door in the short and long terms.

There is no secret to building more business. It requires you to get out there and meet people. No matter how technologically adept we may become, there is no substitute for the shaken hand, the exchanged business card, and the engaging smile. In short, there is no substitute for the person behind the product or service. People buy from people they know and like.

Keep your promises! Now is a time when customers may want to shop around for goods or services. Having a reputation as an honest provider with special attention paid to meeting or exceeding customer expectations sets you apart from the norm and makes your customer feel special.

Market more, not less! The first thing slashed in most budgets during economic declines is marketing. That means your competitors may have made that choice as well. When times are tougher, companies need to market more, build their market share by being out in the marketplace, not waiting for markets to come to them.

That’s where the Chamber comes in. Use the Chamber and make it part of your plan to build and grow your business. Take advantage of all we have to offer, and give yourself the best possible chance to not just survive but thrive. Leave the doom and gloom to other business people who aren’t as smart as you are.

Survive Thrive Scottsdale business leaders share sound advice on keeping marketing efforts up in a down economy

Direct mail campaigns are still the most effective method of reaching your customers and prospects.

Whether a direct mail campaign is focused on customer acquisition or customer loyalty, it can deliver relevant and measurable marketing communications. In addition, newer technology now allows amazing cross media campaigns (e-mail and direct mail that drive the customer to a personalized Web response site) that generate incredibly high response rates. In any marketing plan, there should be a program of communication — not just “one shot” approaches. Direct mail done right will grow and deepen your relationship with your prospect or client. Offer cross-sell promotions or create an incentive for existing customers with special opportunities because of their loyalty. The bottom line is to have a plan, execute it consistently and provide relevant communication with your direct mail campaigns.

How can business owners still maintain an effective marketing plan while cutting costs?

In business, the adage that “nothing happens until a sale is made” is true. Randomly scaling or cutting back without a clear understanding of why you’re cutting back or how effective the cutback will be will not help you grow your business in tough times. A more effective strategy is to first understand your customers

and prospects well enough to target specific and relevant communication to them. Make sure that your current marketing dollars are working well for you and carefully evaluate the ROI. If they’re not, work with a professional and shift those dollars into something appropriate. Just don’t stop marketing altogether!

What is the best way to have your electronic campaign get immediate results?

What tips or suggestions do you have for companies needing to scale down their marketing plans?

In today’s environment, it is important to expose your Web site to those customers looking for your goods and services. Make your site easy to navigate and be sure to have a call to action that entices the user to make a purchase, contact your business, or give you information to contact them back. Get an e-mail address to follow up and/or put in a database so that you can “drip” on them via e-mail with information, new products, new services, industry standards, events…the list goes on.

The most important aspect of marketing to your customers or potential customers is the content you are sending them. Avoid messages that are meaningless and have little worth. The goal is to portray a more magazine quality style that attracts attention visually and has an easy means of purchasing, contacting or going to the next step.

What are the implications of scaling back your marketing efforts?

If you don’t stay in front of your bread-andbutter customers — those you attained by word of mouth or referral — the consequences can be deadly to your business. The minute you tone down your brand power online, a competitor can and will step in your place. Not only could you be missing out on potential clients and sales, it could also put you further back in the competition when the economy rebounds.

Don’t waste money on “shotgun spray and pray” approaches. Develop a great mailing list and invest time in cleaning up your existing list. You’ll save both postage and printing costs. Move money from non-effective communication approaches into well thought out campaigns and you’ll see a lift. Follow the tried and true rules for successful direct mail: Have a great list, a great offer and great creative — and you can follow it to the bank!

Even though we live in an electronic world, why does print advertising continue to remain an effective means of getting your word across?

It’s important that folks understand that just one medium isn’t necessarily the right answer. Often it’s the combination of media that is most effective.

With that said, print advertising has many solid advantages in a marketing plan. It is easy to target specific groups, easy to produce and be consistent with, and effective in measuring results. It is still the one media avenue that everyone has access to and no permission is required.

The reality is that budgets are being reduced. The key is to cut back on highcost, ineffective advertising and spend only on methods that may work for you such as search engine and e-mail marketing. We just e-mailed an advertisement with statistics indicating that e-mail and Internet marketing are up. Unless you are shutting your doors, do not abandon your marketing ship. Rather, create a useful, re-directed new plan that can put you on the right course.

What tips or suggestions do you have for companies needing to scale down their marketing plans?

If scaling down is necessary, there are many cost-effective ways of marketing your business. The main staple is having a solid e-mail marketing campaign. I always ask my potential customers if they would spend a quarter on a customer and the answer is always yes. With e-mail marketing, depending on your database, you can send bulk e-mails for fractions of that and be very effective. Our motto is, “Fire out your message and drum up some business!”

Make sure your Web site is updated and optimized so that you have a fighting chance of being seen and found. Blogs are very popular and effective in getting your message out, not to mention great for search results. Lastly, make sure you have a presence on every possible social network out there.

Linked In, Plaxo, Facebook and MyCityFaces are great ways to network your company online. When listed, those reverse links can help tremendously in your online results and reputation.

Events / Tradeshow Ally Shore, A. Shore Thing With meetings and events going virtual these days, what are the challenges and solutions in continuing to effectively promote your business?

The proliferation of social networks like YouTube, increased cable channels and interactive point of purchase kiosks have simultaneously led communication to become even more dependent upon visual media, while reducing the amount of time any one person is willing to spend on that communication. This has made it an increasingly difficult task for most businesses to concisely and effectively communicate their message. Whether you need to convey a sales message, a branding message or a fundraising request, a well-produced video presentation or event can convey more information, more effectively and in less time than traditional text-based marketing. While traditional marketing components remain important, video and visual events have become an even more vital part of any successful marketing plan.

Public Relations Matt Silverman, R&R Partners Explain the power public relations has in an effective marketing plan.

If companies don’t tell their story, someone else will. Without information or a presence, there’s a vacuum and something will fill it. It could be misinformation or the competitor’s story. Companies need to be telling their story to the right people as often and consistently as possible.

Part of effective public relations includes getting your organization in the news media. Research shows that when mentioned in a positive way in the media, the third-party validation is very effective when combined with advertising.

However, public relations can be so much more. Depending on a client’s goals, we might need to create outreach to specific stakeholders, monitor and create online communication, get the client front and center at the right meetings or manage sensitive issues that could threaten a company’s reputation.

Public relations also provides a sounding board for how a variety of audiences will react to a company’s message and wise PR counsel provides advice so your company can make the best decisions.

Why is public relations an aspect of marketing that should not be reduced in a down economy?

We are all making tough decisions on what we can afford to keep in this economy. But I don’t recommend that you stop talking to your customers or potential customers. Some companies use this time to gain market share when others are going quiet.

While customers are being more frugal about how they spend their dollars, doesn’t it make sense that companies need to fight harder for that customer’s business? Reaching those customers through public relations can definitely be less expensive way to reach them than traditional advertising.

What tips or suggestions do you have for companies needing to scale down their marketing plans?

Keep a presence in the market. Lead with your strength and promote the core parts of your business. Identify the most important target audiences and keep communicating with them. Leverage online, social media and electronic communication for cost savings. And ask your communication experts for suggestions on how to achieve maximum exposure in the most cost-effective way.

What is the challenge in marketing your own business?

In the business world, many would say the key to success is variety. If that argument holds true, Jay Jennings, cofounder of Marketing Associates, would be able to open many doors to success.

The consummate opportunity seeker, Jennings’ entrepreneurial spirit began early on in his career. After graduating with a business degree from the University of Arizona, he began working with a family-owned home security business, where he remained for 20 years. In 2000, he ventured on his own and started a computer repair business and found himself in need of a good marketing plan.

“I realized I had a great resource in marketing: my friend Alan Tarr,” says Jennings. “Alan had cut his teeth on Madison Avenue in New York City as a copywriter and I discovered we were very complimentary to each other.”

In 2001, Jennings and Tarr — who wrote the book The Seven Deadly Sins of Marketing and How to Avoid Them — founded Marketing Associates, which gives businesses the tools they need to develop a creative and cost-effective marketing plan tailored to their industry.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale began in 1954 when the Scottsdale Junior Chamber of Commerce led an effort to start a Boys Club in Scottsdale. Seven years later in 1961, the first Scottsdale Girls Club opened. The two groups finally merged in 1992 to become the Boys & Girls Clubs of Scottsdale. In 2004, the organization launched a campaign to grow its service area and increase by 40 percent the number of youth that it served. To better reflect the expanded service area, the group changed its name to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.

ISSUE: Why should I consider banking with a community bank?

ISSUE: What is the most important step in the hiring process?

ISSUE: If I build or improve real property that I use for my Scottsdale business, then sell that property, am I a “speculative builder” subject to an excise tax?

Answer: While most people would say the interview, the most important step is actually the “identify” step. You have to have a clear idea of the “must haves” and “should haves” required for the position. Relying heavily on the interview is a flawed process and, in reality, should be nothing more than a “smell test” of whether or not the candidate’s appearance and demeanor fits your culture. The use of assessment tools can help by determining the candidate’s ability to learn what they need to know when working for you (cognitive skills). It can also uncover behavioral tendencies that can affect their performance. How well you can perform your most important hiring step will make all the difference in the future success of your business.
