Yes, our challenges are real. We may be sailing in some uncharted waters but there are charts available to help us all navigate our way to more profitable times. We could simply declare ourselves adrift and allow ourselves to label ourselves victims or we can stand strong and say, “This economy presents opportunities to learn and grow and make myself and my business stronger and better.” Let’s begin with some basic realities. Ninety-four percent of Americans are employed and earning wages at a rate not dissimilar from their past wages. The vast majority of people live with traditional mortgages in homes we can afford. Our businesses have a stable base of loyal customers on which we can build for the future. All of the rest is simply attitude. A positive attitude will produce better results. Get back to basics! Now is the time to work on your business. Reach out to your customers. Ask them what you can do to improve your service or product. Treat every encounter as a business building experience where you learn new skills, improve your customer service and embrace ways of doing your business smarter. Build your networks! Just as you must return to your perennial customers and thank them for staying with you, you must also work to bring new business in the door in the short and long terms. There is no secret to building more business. It requires you to get out there and meet people. No matter how technologically adept we may become, there is no substitute for the shaken hand, the exchanged business card, and the engaging smile. In short, there is no substitute for the person behind the product or service. People buy from people they know and like. Keep your promises! Now is a time when customers may want to shop around for goods or services. Having a reputation as an honest provider with special attention paid to meeting or exceeding customer expectations sets you apart from the norm and makes your customer feel special. Market more, not less! The first thing slashed in most budgets during economic declines is marketing. That means your competitors may have made that choice as well. When times are tougher, companies need to market more, build their market share by being out in the marketplace, not waiting for markets to come to them. That’s where the Chamber comes in. Use the Chamber and make it part of your plan to build and grow your business. Take advantage of all we have to offer, and give yourself the best possible chance to not just survive but thrive. Leave the doom and gloom to other business people who aren’t as smart as you are. Yours in success,

Rick Kidder, President/CEO

Survive Thrive Scottsdale business leaders share sound advice on keeping marketing efforts up in a down economy By Michelle Jacoby Direct Mail / Print Advertising Eileen Rogers, Allegra Print & Imaging Why is print a necessary component in a business’s marketing efforts? Direct mail campaigns are still the most effective method of reaching your customers and prospects. Whether a direct mail campaign is focused on customer acquisition or customer loyalty, it can deliver relevant and measurable marketing communications. In addition, newer technology now allows amazing cross media campaigns (e-mail and direct mail that drive the customer to a personalized Web response site) that generate incredibly high response rates. In any marketing plan, there should be a program of communication — not just “one shot” approaches. Direct mail done right will grow and deepen your relationship with your prospect or client. Offer cross-sell promotions or create an incentive for existing customers with special opportunities because of their loyalty. The bottom line is to have a plan, execute it consistently and provide relevant communication with your direct mail campaigns. How can business owners still maintain an effective marketing plan while cutting costs? In business, the adage that “nothing happens until a sale is made” is true. Randomly scaling or cutting back without a clear understanding of why you’re cutting back or how effective the cutback will be will not help you grow your business in tough times. A more effective strategy is to first understand your customers

6

and prospects well enough to target specific and relevant communication to them. Make sure that your current marketing dollars are working well for you and carefully evaluate the ROI. If they’re not, work with a professional and shift those dollars into something appropriate. Just don’t stop marketing altogether!

Online / Web / E-mail Bob Woodbury, FireDrum Internet Marketing What is the best way to have your electronic campaign get immediate results?

What tips or suggestions do you have for companies needing to scale down their marketing plans?

In today’s environment, it is important to expose your Web site to those customers looking for your goods and services. Make your site easy to navigate and be sure to have a call to action that entices the user to make a purchase, contact your business, or give you information to contact them back. Get an e-mail address to follow up and/or put in a database so that you can “drip” on them via e-mail with information, new products, new services, industry standards, events…the list goes on. The most important aspect of marketing to your customers or potential customers is the content you are sending them. Avoid messages that are meaningless and have little worth. The goal is to portray a more magazine quality style that attracts attention visually and has an easy means of purchasing, contacting or going to the next step. What are the implications of scaling back your marketing efforts? If you don’t stay in front of your bread-andbutter customers — those you attained by word of mouth or referral — the consequences can be deadly to your business. The minute you tone down your brand power online, a competitor can and will step in your place. Not only could you be missing out on potential clients and sales, it could also put you further back in the competition when the economy rebounds.

Don’t waste money on “shotgun spray and pray” approaches. Develop a great mailing list and invest time in cleaning up your existing list. You’ll save both postage and printing costs. Move money from non-effective communication approaches into well thought out campaigns and you’ll see a lift. Follow the tried and true rules for successful direct mail: Have a great list, a great offer and great creative — and you can follow it to the bank! Even though we live in an electronic world, why does print advertising continue to remain an effective means of getting your word across? It’s important that folks understand that just one medium isn’t necessarily the right answer. Often it’s the combination of media that is most effective. With that said, print advertising has many solid advantages in a marketing plan. It is easy to target specific groups, easy to produce and be consistent with, and effective in measuring results. It is still the one media avenue that everyone has access to and no permission is required.

If your favorite fishing spot suddenly had 50 percent less fish and 25 percent more fisherman... you’re going to need to drop your line in the water more often to catch enough food for dinner - it’s the same with marketing. Photo: Sergio Dabdoub

The reality is that budgets are being reduced. The key is to cut back on highcost, ineffective advertising and spend only on methods that may work for you such as search engine and e-mail marketing. We just e-mailed an advertisement with statistics indicating that e-mail and Internet marketing are up. Unless you are shutting your doors, do not abandon your marketing ship. Rather, create a useful, re-directed new plan that can put you on the right course. What tips or suggestions do you have for companies needing to scale down their marketing plans? If scaling down is necessary, there are many cost-effective ways of marketing your business. The main staple is having a solid e-mail marketing campaign. I always ask my potential customers if they would spend a quarter on a customer and the answer is always yes. With e-mail marketing, depending on your database, you can send bulk e-mails for fractions of that and be very effective. Our motto is, “Fire out your message and drum up some business!” Make sure your Web site is updated and optimized so that you have a fighting chance of being seen and found. Blogs are very popular and effective in getting your message out, not to mention great for search results. Lastly, make sure you have a presence on every possible social network out there. Linked In, Plaxo, Facebook and MyCityFaces are great ways to network your company online. When listed, those reverse links can help tremendously in your online results and reputation. Events / Tradeshow Ally Shore, A. Shore Thing With meetings and events going virtual these days, what are the challenges and solutions in continuing to effectively promote your business? The proliferation of social networks like YouTube, increased cable channels and interactive point of purchase kiosks have simultaneously led communication to become even more dependent upon visual media, while reducing the amount of time any one person is willing to spend on that communication. This has made it an increasingly difficult task for most businesses to concisely and effectively communicate their message. Whether you need to convey a sales message, a branding message or a fundraising request, a well-produced video presentation or event can convey more information, more effectively and in less time than traditional text-based marketing. While traditional marketing components remain important, video and visual events have become an even more vital part of any successful marketing plan. Why is marketing the one area a business owner should not reduce or minimize? If your favorite fishing spot suddenly had 50 percent less fish and 25 percent more fisherman using it, even with the tastiest bait, you’re going to need to drop your line in the water more often to catch enough food for dinner. It’s the same with marketing. You’re now fighting twice as hard to get the same number of sales you were making before. If you stop going to the lake, trust me, the fish aren’t going to swim to you.

8

ideas to get your brand out into the social media world is an excellent way to maintain exposure, develop new clients and lower your media costs. Your events don’t have to vanish either. Many companies have had great success with “user group” conferences or regional sales meetings. The problem we now face is not only our own costs for producing these events, but the inability of our participants to travel. Welcome to the virtual conference. Using Web-based technologies and a few fun little creative twists, we have allowed clients to keep the momentum of yearly events while reducing their costs significantly. Public Relations Matt Silverman, R&R Partners Explain the power public relations has in an effective marketing plan. If companies don’t tell their story, someone else will. Without information or a presence, there’s a vacuum and something will fill it. It could be misinformation or the competitor’s story. Companies need to be telling their story to the right people as often and consistently as possible. Part of effective public relations includes getting your organization in the news media. Research shows that when mentioned in a positive way in the media, the third-party validation is very effective when combined with advertising. However, public relations can be so much more. Depending on a client’s goals, we might need to create outreach to specific stakeholders, monitor and create online communication, get the client front and center at the right meetings or manage sensitive issues that could threaten a company’s reputation. Public relations also provides a sounding board for how a variety of audiences will react to a company’s message and wise PR counsel provides advice so your company can make the best decisions. Why is public relations an aspect of marketing that should not be reduced in a down economy? We are all making tough decisions on what we can afford to keep in this economy. But I don’t recommend that you stop talking to your customers or potential customers. Some companies use this time to gain market share when others are going quiet. While customers are being more frugal about how they spend their dollars, doesn’t it make sense that companies need to fight harder for that customer’s business? Reaching those customers through public relations can definitely be less expensive way to reach them than traditional advertising. What tips or suggestions do you have for companies needing to scale down their marketing plans? Keep a presence in the market. Lead with your strength and promote the core parts of your business. Identify the most important target audiences and keep communicating with them. Leverage online, social media and electronic communication for cost savings. And ask your communication experts for suggestions on how to achieve maximum exposure in the most cost-effective way. CONTACT INFORMATION

Scottsdale @ Work spoke with Marketing Associate’s Jay Jennings about effective marketing in today’s business environment.

Marketing Associates

What is the one marketing mistake a company, no matter how big or small, can make?

“Our goal is to help smaller businesses ‘breakthrough’ in the marketplace.”

Not having a communication system that helps existing and potential clients understand their expertise. Education without obligation creates trust.

– Jay Jennings

What is the challenge in marketing your own business?

In the business world, many would say the key to success is variety. If that argument holds true, Jay Jennings, cofounder of Marketing Associates, would be able to open many doors to success. The consummate opportunity seeker, Jennings’ entrepreneurial spirit began early on in his career. After graduating with a business degree from the University of Arizona, he began working with a family-owned home security business, where he remained for 20 years. In 2000, he ventured on his own and started a computer repair business and found himself in need of a good marketing plan. “I realized I had a great resource in marketing: my friend Alan Tarr,” says Jennings. “Alan had cut his teeth on Madison Avenue in New York City as a copywriter and I discovered we were very complimentary to each other.” In 2001, Jennings and Tarr — who wrote the book The Seven Deadly Sins of Marketing and How to Avoid Them — founded Marketing Associates, which gives businesses the tools they need to develop a creative and cost-effective marketing plan tailored to their industry.

www.scottsdalechamber.com

“Our goal is to help smaller businesses ‘breakthrough’ in the marketplace,” says Jennings. “In doing that, we show companies how to target and clarify what it is they want. We essentially help them pick the low hanging fruit that will help their core business.” With a focus on small- and medium-sized businesses, Marketing Associates is focused on developing the foundation of a good marketing plan, “one that our client can continue to use long after we’re gone.” According to Jennings, an effective marketing plan is based on the question, “Why do you need what you need?” “Clients always come with an implementation need. We pull back and ask what their strategy is first,” he says. Jennings is taking that business philosophy and implementing it in his newest venture, NARPRO.com. Associated with the Neighborhood Auto Repair

Getting through the clutter just like everyone else. We have found the best way to get business is to send a quickread message educating potential clients on what they can do to market better. In fact, we use a system on our Web site that offers periodic e-mail tips on how to market more effectively. There are many facets to marketing. If a business could only focus on one way to get the word out, what would that be and why? Make sure you’re communicating to your existing clients first. They are your best referral source! Professionals Network, the company offers a free consumer referral service of local auto repair shops. He is also looking at soon launching a data backup company. “I don’t think I’ll ever retire. I work virtually, which gives me the opportunity to focus on my business, while seeking out other opportunities,” Jennings says. “I just want to keep growing.” connect: Marketing Associates 602-228-6217 marketingassociatesaz.com

feature: Sponsorships

A Perfect Match

Using partnerships to promote your business By Michelle Jacoby

The Scottsdale Airpark Breakfast series is a monthly Chamber event sponsored by Mutual of Omaha Bank.

In today’s corporate climate, smart business is more than making a profit. It’s about developing relationships with businesses and nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life in our community. That’s why sponsorships are fast becoming a standard in corporate cultures. Today’s business owners are becoming increasingly aware that their clients are not only business minded, they are socially and community focused as well. According to Kevin Sellers, Arizona Market President of First Fidelity Bank, sponsorships are an invaluable way to support the community a business serves. “Investing in the community around us is necessary and vital to our own growth as well as the health of the local market,” he says. “For us, the key to effectively investing in our community is to determine what local issues are important to us and how our investment can best be utilized.” Corporate sponsorship is a payment or offer of in-kind service in return for the right of association with an organization’s name and exposure to that organization’s audience or customers. This opportunity not only creates exposure, it also gives potential customers the opportunity to speak with company representatives about the services they offer. Sponsorship has been the fastest-growing

www.scottsdalechamber.com

form of marketing in the past decade. There are six main reasons why companies sponsor: to enhance the company’s image; drive sales; increase visibility; establish a good corporate citizen role; differentiate themselves from the competition; and enhance business and consumer relations. Business owners should assess the proposed sponsorship opportunity against these goals and determine whether the organization or event will enhance its corporate image. When it comes to deciding on which sponsorship opportunity to be involved with, Dan Stewart, Market President of Mutual of Omaha Bank, suggests choosing an organization whose philosophies and outreach are consistent with those of your company. “The demographic of the organization membership and target audience should also be consistent with your target market,” he says. The effectiveness of a sponsorship as a marketing tool takes time to grow. Often, companies support the same events year after year, which in turn, creates a unique “brand” for the company, one that the public begins to count on and expect. When developing a marketing plan, businesses should consider the power and value of a corporate sponsorship.

Sponsorships at Work Scottsdale business leaders share insight on their corporate sponsorship of Chamber events and programs. “First Fidelity Bank’s decision to serve as the Presenting Sponsor of the Chamber’s INSPIRE Women’s Luncheon program was a simple one. INSPIRE is much more than a networking and education venue for women. The program involves some of the most talented Arizona women who serve as leaders in business today. By providing these leaders with a platform by which they can educate and share their successes with other women leaders, we are showcasing their inspiration and empowerment to others. We are very proud of our association with the INSPIRE program and hope to be a continuing contributor to its success. First Fidelity Bank has a number of outstanding women that serve as role models and inspiring leaders in this community. It is with great admiration that we support and honor their dedication to our organization and the community through our sponsorship of the INSPIRE program.” Kevin Sellers, Arizona President First Fidelity Bank

“Our relationship with the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce First Friday Airpark Breakfast began when we helped the Chamber launch the series by agreeing to sponsor the first three First Friday Airpark Breakfasts, beginning in November 2006. We continued our annual sponsorship in November 2007 and again in November 2008. The breakfasts we have hosted have all been well attended, the speakers have been excellent speaking about topics that are relevant to what was happening in Scottsdale. This has been a great opportunity to reach out and hear first hand from our business partners what is top of mind in the business community.” Dan Stewart, Market President Mutual of Omaha Bank

The Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce announced the winners of the 23rd Annual Sterling Awards on Nov. 13 at the Phoenician Resort. The event was co-hosted by 12 News anchor Lin Sue Cooney and Scottsdale Republic general manager Mike Ryan. As the Chamber’s marquis event, the Sterling Awards program embodies the spirit of our organization by celebrating the people and companies that make our community a great place to live, work and play. Over the years, we have honored our city’s best corporate neighbors and brightest rising stars. The prestigious Sterling Award is one of the most coveted business awards in the Valley, with a rigorous application, judging and selection process. Celebrating our 23rd year, the Sterling Awards program began as the Small Business Awards and has evolved as our business community has grown. Please join us in congratulating our 2008 honorees and finalists. NONPROFITS Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale Steve Davidson, CEO and President 10515 E. Lakeview Drive 480-344-5517 bgcs.org Serves local youth by developing programs that are designed to develop character and life-enhancing skills. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale began in 1954 when the Scottsdale Junior Chamber of Commerce led an effort to start a Boys Club in Scottsdale. Seven years later in 1961, the first Scottsdale Girls Club opened. The two groups finally merged in 1992 to become the Boys & Girls Clubs of Scottsdale. In 2004, the organization launched a campaign to grow its service area and increase by 40 percent the number of youth that it served. To better reflect the expanded service area, the group changed its name to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. Today, it serves more than 15,000 local youth at nine branches and 12 outreach sites in Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Hualapai Indian Community and other Northeast Valley neighborhoods. Business Financing

healthcare

ISSUE: Why should I consider banking with a community bank?

ISSUE: They say cash is king. If so, how can I improve my company’s cash flow situation in the new year?

ISSUE: Can an on-site healthcare clinic save my company money in 2009?

Answer: There are two immediate steps you can take: reviewing and cutting costs wherever possible and increasing your accounts receivable. If the process of collecting on invoices is slow, you may want to utilize factoring. Factoring can provide immediate cash by advancing against invoices. Factors make funding decisions based on the creditworthiness of your customers. Funding decisions are made in a matter of days, which means your cash flow situation can improve almost immediately. If your company provides goods or services to other businesses or government agencies, factoring may be an ideal financing option for you to explore.

Answer: An on-site healthcare clinic would offer your company many methods to reduce healthcare costs through benefit claim reduction and avoiding catastrophic health illness, decreasing your company’s annual occurrence rates. Your employees will have easy access to the on-site clinic and receive immediate healthcare for wellness, preventative care, chronic illness, and, if necessary, referral to specialists within a week. Our on-site clinics are free to visit and will offer your employees generic medications on-site. With an on-site clinic your employees will be healthier and more productive saving your company more money in 2009.

Answer: Speaking only for our community bank, we are different in that you will always be dealing with a decision maker. All loan and account decisions are made locally and you will never be put into an answering machine loop. All of our bankers have direct and cell phone numbers listed on their business cards. We are a full-service bank with business and personal products to meet your banking needs. ISSUE: What is the most important step in the hiring process?

ISSUE: If I build or improve real property that I use for my Scottsdale business, then sell that property, am I a “speculative builder” subject to an excise tax?

ISSUE: Does a “hosted” telephone solution work for me?

Answer: While most people would say the interview, the most important step is actually the “identify” step. You have to have a clear idea of the “must haves” and “should haves” required for the position. Relying heavily on the interview is a flawed process and, in reality, should be nothing more than a “smell test” of whether or not the candidate’s appearance and demeanor fits your culture. The use of assessment tools can help by determining the candidate’s ability to learn what they need to know when working for you (cognitive skills). It can also uncover behavioral tendencies that can affect their performance. How well you can perform your most important hiring step will make all the difference in the future success of your business.

Answer: Yes, you may be if you are not careful. A “speculative builder” is one who sells improved real property within 24 months of its substantial completion. The property is considered substantially complete if the construction has passed final inspection, a certificate of occupancy was issued or the property is ready for use. The tax imposed under Section 416 of the Scottsdale Revised City Code is 1.65 percent of the total selling price, with certain deductions and credits that apply.

Answer: Hosted telephones are located offsite and are managed by your solutions provider. Sonoran Integrations provides a hosted solution which is ideal for smaller companies which do not have an IT staff. With a hosted solution, you pay a monthly fee for services and your lines are included. You don’t need to be the “expert” on managing your system. You can leave that to us. For larger companies, typically a monthly lease payment is less than that of a hosted solution. When the lease is over, you own your equipment. With this you can make changes to the system easier on your own and have it instantly.

Did You Know? One of the most recognizable “traveling” advertisements, the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile first took to the streets of Chicago in 1936. Today, there are six high-tech Weinermobiles hot-dogging it around the country. www.scottsdalechamber.com

Kim Kubsch Founder and President, Global Arizona Worldly may be the one word that best describes Kim Kubsch, founder and president of Global Arizona. A globetrotting strategist who has lived and worked in Singapore and Malaysia — as well as traveled to more than 100 countries around the world — she heads up Global Arizona, a company dedicated to “growing a global Arizona.” Since founding the company in 2007, Kubsch has created global business connections with more than 600 business professionals in 28 countries. She has also been instrumental in developing programs for ambassadors to the U.S. from Egypt, Guatemala, Indonesia and Afghanistan. “We’re a resource in enhancing the global awareness for national and foreign investors and workers,” she says. “There’s so much culture and diversity here. My hope is that more companies in Arizona will welcome the global community.”

Best business advice you’ve ever received: Be humble, not boastful. You’ll become a better listener by being humble.

Best business advice from your mother: Go explore the world, which I’ve done having visited 104 countries to date.

Motto: Be optimistic, be thankful and wear a smile each and everyday!

Biggest challenge: Uncovering and discovering the “global personality” of Arizona.

Best trait: My ability to connect the dots by introducing people to opportunities in the global marketplace.

Worst trait: On occasion, I can be impatient.

One thing you cannot live without in your business life:

QUOTABLE: Marketing is not an event, but a process. It has a beginning, a middle, but never an end. You improve it, perfect it, change it, even pause it. But you never stop it completely. - Jay Conrad Levinson
