In Scottsdale Healthcare and Mayo Clinic, we have two of the most important cancer research programs in the United States. Everyday, researchers in these two fine organizations get us closer and closer to being able to treat or eradicate certain types of cancer. Beyond their important research work, each of these health powerhouses spends considerable energy and resources on community education and preparedness for the future. Each recognizes that wellness and prevention is among the most important keys to the health of our city. Scottsdale’s Fit City program, a wellness initiative meant to embrace the entire community, has received start-up funding from the Virginia Piper Charitable Trust. Fit City is a unique coalition among government, business, education and the nonprofit communities to promote healthy lifestyles, and engage residents and business in making Scottsdale a healthier place. Issues like health and wellness were once considered taboo within corporate cultures. Any potential benefits to the company were outweighed by the sense that personal choices of employees were not an appropriate topic for discussion. Significant changes in the costs associated with health benefits have begun to change that perspective and research studies are documenting the millions of dollars lost annually in lost productivity and lost hours due to employee health challenges. Through our partnership with SCF of Arizona, and our Safety and Wellness committee, the Chamber is committed to providing the tools and resources to help our members create healthy workplaces. We welcome your involvement helping us build a healthier community. Yours in success,

On the Cover In February 2001, the Scottsdale Public Art Program installed a skyspace titled Knight Rise by internationally acclaimed artist James Turrell in the outdoor courtyard at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA). Knight Rise is one of only a handful of skyspaces open to the public in the United States and a point of civic pride for the city of Scottsdale. The skyspace at SMoCA frames the pure color and changing light of the sky. At sunrise and sunset the illusion is most dramatic: the sky appears to descend upon the viewer almost as if it were a tangible substance. Turrell says his
work provides the opportunity to “look at our own looking.” By doing so, Turrell grounds us in the present moment and reconnects us to the world we inhabit. Visitors can take advantage of viewing the Knight Rise skyspace during sunset on Thursdays when SMoCA hosts free admission and extended hours until 8 p.m. Photo credit: James Turrell, Knight Rise, 2001. At Scottsdale Healthcare, medical advances are continually taking shape, particularly in cancer research. Dr. Daniel Von Hoff (far right) is currently working on a clinical research trial on a drug designed to treat basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer.

nce a month, Del Lofton travels more than 2,500 miles from her home in the Florida Keys to Scottsdale, where she is participating in a clinical trial she is hoping will help her win her battle against cancer. Lofton suffers from basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer that, although easily treated, can cause extensive damage to surrounding bone and tissue. Lofton has a rare form of the disease that has been recurring on the bridge of her nose and eye area. “The cure is to cut [the tumor] off. However, mine kept coming back so my doctors advised me to remove my eye so it would all be gone,” Lofton says. “It still came back.” After numerous surgeries, Lofton went on a radical diet and underwent different rounds of chemotherapy, which weren’t responding. Finally, her doctor informed her of a clinical research trial for basal cell carcinoma being conducted at the Virginia C. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare. He said she would be the ideal candidate. That was seven months ago. Today, Lofton makes the journey from Florida to Scottsdale once a month to participate in a trial that tests GDC-0449, a chemical synthetic that blocks pathways to a tumor-promoting gene that leads to basal cell carcinoma and other diseases. Studies have shown the drug shrinks tumors

with limited side effects, including a loss of sense of taste, and a small amount of hair loss and weight loss. “Basal cell carcinoma affects about one million people a year and a proportion of these patients have disease that is not curable with surgery … This finding has potential importance in this population,” says Daniel D. Von Hoff, M.D., Physician in Chief at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and Chief Medical Officer for the Scottsdale Clinical Research Institute at Scottsdale Healthcare. On the Map Clinical research trials like these and other advancements in medical care are a major reason why Scottsdale is fast becoming a destination of choice for patients all over the country. As the two largest medical facilities in the Valley, Scottsdale Healthcare and Mayo Clinic are establishing themselves as significant destinations for innovative and quality care. “Because Scottsdale Healthcare is often the first in Arizona or the region to get approval for using new types of surgical procedures and the latest medical technology, patients will seek [us out] for their care,” says Tom Sadvary, CEO of Scottsdale Healthcare. Scottsdale Healthcare was the first in Arizona to have the daVinci surgical robot for prostate surgery, mitral valve surgery and other procedures, and the Sensei robot for treating heart arrhythmia. hospital was also the first in Arizona to have the Novalis stereotactic therapy system for treating hard-to-reach tumors. “Patients today are very savvy and seek out physicians and medical centers that are on the leading edge of innovation in patient care, research and technology,” says Sadvary, who also attributes the dedicated work of its doctors to the national and international recognition the hospital is receiving for its medical programs. “Scottsdale Healthcare is recognized as a leader in Phase I clinical trials of new cancer therapies. n addition to traditional medicine, Scottsdale is also a destination for those looking for alternative healthcare. These facilities and well-being centers are focused on using organic and herbal medicines as well as natural solutions to healing. Arizona Spinal Care With an emphasis on sports and exercise, Arizona Spinal Care treats such conditions as headaches, neck and back pain, and disorders caused by work, auto and sports injuries. Dr. Peter Darvas offers special programs for pregnant women, children and infants, and has developed methods in ergonomics and fitness and exercise programs. Back to Motion Chiropractic Focusing on the body’s ability to heal itself, Back to Motion Chiropractic uses non-invasive methods without drugs or surgery to treat spine and musculoskeletal disorders. Run by Dr. Jennifer Polk, the practice offers such services as chiropractic manipulation, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, stretching, massage and ergonomic training among others.
of these studies are first-in-the-world trials of new treatments, and we draw patients both locally and from all over the country,” he says. “Dr. Von Hoff is our chief scientific officer and is internationally known for his breakthroughs in cancer research.” The hospital’s bariatric surgery program is also gaining notoriety. Led by Dr. Robin Blackstone, the program was one of the first in the nation to be certified as a center of excellence. “The quality and reputation of Scottsdale Healthcare’s bariatric program and surgeons draw patients from all over Arizona, New Mexico and

Nevada. There are also patients from Mexico and Canada who travel to Scottsdale for medical treatment in several specialties,” he says. Home Away From Home With patients traveling to Scottsdale from all over the globe, finding a comfortable place to stay is an integral part of the journey, which is why facilities like Scottsdale Healthcare and Mayo Clinic are creating environments that go beyond the standard hospital setting. “A comment we often hear from patients

is that our hospitals feel like luxury hotels and provide a level of service comparable to our local resorts,” says Sadvary. “Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak, for instance, has all original artwork, every patient room has a mountain view and we offer a concierge service. Spa services are also available for patients.” All three hospitals — Thompson Peak, Scottsdale Healthcare Shea and Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn — have in-room entertainment systems and ondemand room service menus that patients can access 24 hours a day. Some patients, however, are required to stay weeks, even months, which can be cost restrictive. To accommodate transplant patients who require prolonged follow-up care, Mayo Clinic recently broke ground on the Village at Mayo Clinic, the new location for the Arizona Transplant House, a facility that houses the hospital’s transplant patients in a caring and supportive home-like environment. Scheduled to open in August 2009, the development will feature nine Southwestern style casitas containing six bedrooms and six bathrooms. Each casita will accommodate patients and their caregivers during their follow-up care, which includes blood draws, biopsies, consults and medication adjustments. Mayo is also teaming up with the American Cancer Society to provide lodging for cancer patients who need to undergo long-term therapy that can last more than six or seven weeks. Journey of Hope Although the trip from Florida to Arizona is long and, at times, difficult, Lofton knows that with every treatment, she gains more hope. “I don’t know how long my treatment will be. There is no protocol because it’s still in the research phase,” she says. “It has been healing and very hopeful. The cancer is shrinking and my scans show that it’s stable and there’s no growth. It’s all part of my journey.” The mother of four sons, Lofton understands the importance of nurturing care, something she says she always receives from the staff at Scottsdale Healthcare. “Each time I come to Scottsdale, I’m immediately treated with kindness and care by the hospital staff,” she says. “I’ve come to know the nurses, who greet me with hugs and a caring touch. It’s been a great experience and knowing this drug is available and targeted to my cancer is a huge hope.” “We exist to provide excellent care for residents for our community,” says Sadvary. “That being said, the depth and quality of our services reach far beyond our borders as evidenced by the number of patients who travel to Scottsdale to receive medical care.”

Scottsdale @ Work spoke with Fun Coach USA’s founder Todd Davis about the importance of fun in the workplace:
Photo: Sergio Dabdoub
Fun Coach USA
What is the philosophy behind Fun Coach USA?
Not too many people can say that when it comes to work, it’s all fun and games. Todd Davis is one of those lucky few. As president and CEO of Team Play USA this Scottsdale native — and Chaparral High School alum — is dedicated to putting the fun back into the workplace. Todd got his start in the corporate team building business while working as coordinator of Sports, Special Events and Community Recreation Services for the Scottsdale Parks, Recreation and Activities Department in the mid-1970s. In the early 80s, the department started running corporate sports events, which inspired him to start Team Play USA, which specializes in developing games and recreational activities for businesses looking to inspire and energize employees with something beyond the standard corporate retreat. “Throughout my career in sports and recreation, I kept hearing people say they wanted to have fun in the workplace, but they didn’t have time or were too busy in their personal lives,” Todd says. “Our goal is to conquer the divide between time and relationships.” In the early 90s, Todd and his wife Marsha expanded the business to include Fun Coach USA, a franchise-based format of Team Play

USA that gives small business owners the opportunity to start their own corporate team building company. Taking the core values from Team Play, Fun Coach focuses on business recreation, relationships and renewal with participants engaging in physical, strategy and solution games designed to connect people through competition and problem solving. Programs include outdoor adventures, scavenger hunts, athletic games and tournaments, and cooking and design challenges. “We have become so isolated and are not unified as people with a common goal,” says Todd. “We get people to reconnect with the value of their lives. Our value to a business owner is getting individuals to feel responsible.” The franchise format has been working for the Davis’, who envision 100 fun coaches in five years. Through training, fun coaches will be able to work with businesses throughout the country in unique team building exercises designed to motivate and boost employee production and moral. “Fun Coach is a solution to reduce turnover and to pass this baton to other people,” says Marsha. connect: Team Play USA/Fun Coach USA 602-980-3798 www.teamplayusa.com www.funcoachusa.com
Balanced people who enjoy life away from work make better team players. Our mission is to encourage individuals to engage in life away from work, as well as help improve interpersonal communication at work. Fellowship, or the F of fun, is our No. 1 value. This is about taking and making time to improve relationships and teamwork skills in order to improve internal and external customer service. We change the way people view time together as a team, restoring values that have been disappearing. Is it possible to have fun at work? One third or more of your day is working. If we don’t enjoy where we work and the people we work with, it lessens the U of fun, or the team unity. Without it, we lose respect and trust, which hurts performance and creates turnover or anxiety among team members. How does having fun improve overall wellness at work? The N of fun is the needs. If I like where I work, I will give 100 percent. Then I will go home happier and come back happier. Happy people improve emotional wellness and improve commitment to the organization. If you could create a motto for every workplace to live by, what would it be? Pursue fun, work hard and value playing harder, together and personally. Give 100 percent in all that you do in life.

Wellness @ Work From making smart eating choices to creating a healthy work station, these simple tips will help make your workplace healthier, happier and more productive. By Michelle Jacoby Good Eats When it comes to eating in the workplace, “healthy” may be a goal many workers find difficult to achieve. Michelle Dudash, chef and owner of Dudash Nutrition in Gilbert, offers these tips on making smart food choices in the workplace: Bring to work – Lunch should at least have one whole grain, vegetable and lean protein. A roasted chicken sandwich on whole grain bread with lettuce and tomato, accompanied by veggie sticks and hummus is a great example. If you don’t think you have time for breakfast, think again. Whip up whole-wheat toast with some almond or peanut butter. This will prevent you from scarfing down the donuts at work or having a big lunch.
n
Eating out – Entrée salads can be great low-calorie option. However, watch out for the dressing, which can add hundreds of extra calories. Go with a light vinaigrette and use sparingly.

Work Easy If you’re like most American workers, you probably spend the majority of your day sitting at your desk, working on the computer or speaking on the phone. That’s why creating an ergonomic workstation is imperative to ensuring good health in the workplace. Brian McBride, business development manager at @ The Office, and Randy Allen, vice president of sales and marketing for Walsh Bros. Arizona, offer these handy tips:
Morning snack – Ditch the donuts and bring your own snack. Yogurt with fruit, almonds and raisins, or a low-fat cheese stick and apple make delicious choices.
Your back is critical—it must be supported correctly and continually to ensure energy and comfort. Look for an office chair that has flexible/ adjustable options to create back support, including movement and postural changes.
Beverages – Stay hydrated with water. Go easy on the caffeine with no more than two cups coffee per day.
Do not just pick office furnishing out of catalog or online. Test drive a chair and get a feel for what you will be sitting in for years to come.
Afternoon crash – Ditch the candy and cookies. Try dried apricots and almonds instead.
n An efficient ergonomic workstation involves efficient and effective workflow qualities. Place tools that are easy to see and reach.

Never scrimp on seating. For just a few more dollars, you can have a comfortable chair made of quality materials that will last for years. Most of these chairs come with a warranty that will last them for 10 years and more.
n
n Ergonomic work tools like keyboard trays, mouse pads, footrests and monitor lifts are just as important as the furniture they sit on.
Take the time and work with a professional. Work with someone that can guide you through the n

selection processes of products and accessories that will insure you a healthy workspace. Your body and your wallet will thank you. Once you have your ergonomic workstation in place, McBride offers these additional suggestions for proper posture and body position: n Forearms should be parallel to the floor (approximately 90 degree angle at elbow). n Upper arm and elbow should be as close to the body and as relaxed as possible. n Wrists should be as flat as possible (not bent up or down) and straight. n Mouse should be placed adjacent to keyboard and at the same height. n Monitor should be positioned directly in front of the user and at a comfortable viewing distance (approximately 18 to 30 inches away, top of monitor casing 2 to 3 inches above eye level). n Feet should be fully supported by a footrest or the floor.

Scottsdale Campaign for Economic Development 2008-2009 On behalf of our membership, the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce has embarked on a campaign for economic development in our city. The Chamber commissioned Behavior Research in Phoenix to conduct a survey of registered voters to assess how they felt about our city, our direction and the tie-ins between economic growth in our community and the maintaining or enhancing of our quality of life. Scottsdale voters told us what those of us in business already know. Economic growth is essential to maintain the quality of life we all enjoy in this community. What that means is that Scottsdale must march to a new future, one in which we face the challenges of running out of land and our position of strength within the region. Scottsdale is the finest address in the Valley and boasts major business centers, but we cannot afford to lean solely on our past successes in order to determine our future. We must face challenges in transportation, building heights, infrastructure improvements and a variety of other important issues in order to help build a stronger community for the immediate future and beyond. Just a few key results of our survey appear to the right. View the full survey at www.scottsdalechamber.com.

ISSUE: The financial crisis has made it almost impossible to secure a bank loan, even with good credit. Where else can a business owner turn for funding to keep cash flow to continue operations?
ISSUE: Can employee engagement surveys really increase productivity and organizational performance?
ISSUE: What does the Legal Arizona Workers Act mean for my company?
Answer: One option many are unaware of is factoring. Factoring can provide immediate cash by advancing against invoices. Factors make funding decisions based on the credit-worthiness of your customers while a bank makes credit decisions based on a company’s financial history, cash flow and collateral. Most importantly, funding decisions are made in days or hours while banks can take months. If your company provides goods or services to other businesses or government agencies, factoring may be a financing option for you to explore.
Robyn Barrett, Managing Member 480-947-9340 (office) robyn@factors-southwest.com www.factors-southwest.com
Answer: Absolutely! There is research that supports the link between an engaged workforce and increased productivity and organizational performance. BCAZ has conducted many surveys that show employees who responded more favorably to survey questions on engagement also worked in departments with higher levels of productivity, profit, retention and customer satisfaction. Research also shows that the manager, not pay and benefits, was the key in building and sustaining a strong workplace. It is important to note, however, that surveys only work as long as you are committed to implementing the results. For more information on employee surveys, give us a call.
Answer: The Legal Arizona Workers Act requires all employers to register for and use the Federal E-Verify program for all new hires to verify that their employees are authorized to work. The law imposes penalties on employers who employ unauthorized workers. Penalties can include revocation or suspension of business licenses, and additional compliance and reporting requirements. If the system comes back with a “mismatch,” which are at times mistaken, the employer is responsible for taking steps to verify that worker’s employment authorization.

ISSUE: If I have more than $100,000 at one financial institution, is my money FDIC insured?
ISSUE: Experienced industry sales pro or inexperienced sales pro with sales initiative — who’s the better hire?
ISSUE: How can I help my business in an uncertain economy?
Answer: This is a $100,000 question! Based on research, companies spend $100,000 a year on poor performing sales professionals. Based on our research, the best salespeople are those with strong sales initiative (SI) which is defined as the desire to initiate sales contacts (visit www.salesissimple.com/salesassessments.asp for more details). Industry experience vs. sales initiative? Choose sales initiative and teach them about the industry. Sales is about activity and making contact with prospects and buyers.
Answer: At Sonoran Integrations, we pride ourselves on customer service and focusing on your company’s core values. For the last two years, the company has won ShoreTel’s “Award of Excellence” for our unparalleled customer service. By taking this core value, we work with our customers in saving money on network costs and streamlining technology expenses by combining service plans. In most environments, we are able to save our clients’ monthly operating costs while still securing and upgrading their technology infrastructure. A simple check of your network infrastructure might be the first step to saving money and assisting your company’s bottom line.
Answer: The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, effective Oct. 3, 2008 raised the FDIC insurance coverage to $250,000 for each depositor for all financial institutions through Dec. 31, 2009. Effective Oct. 14, 2008, the Temporary Liquidity Guarantee Program insures your non-interest bearing transaction accounts, regardless of the dollar amount, and your interest bearing deposits against loss up to $250,000 per depositor through Dec. 31, 2009 for participating financial institutions.
