Scottsdale has always been blessed with visionary business leaders—from Paul Galvin, who saw potential for Motorola in what is now southern Scottsdale; to Brad Casper, CEO of Henkel, who fights tirelessly on behalf of Scottsdale’s children through his support for education. Vision comes easily to those who have it and forever eludes those who are challenged seeing past the here and now. Vision is about imagining the possibilities and embracing change, not just because it is inevitable, but because change must be focused and directed if the entire community is to benefit. Vision is also about collective wisdom, the capturing of ideas from a vast array of sources in order to arrive at an integrated whole. In 2003, “Which Way Scottsdale?” embodied collective wisdom. Funded by business leaders and executed by the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at ASU, the report was a landmark for Scottsdale. Still debated and discussed today, “Which Way Scottsdale?” helped change the dialogue in our city and pointed out to all of us the challenges that lay at our feet. The report resides on our website today because it is as relevant now as it was when written. The time has come for the dialogue to continue and once again. With the help of the Morrison Institute, the Chamber is embarking on a new community discussion called “Next Steps Scottsdale,” building on the critical issues brought forth in 2003 and taking the discussion to new levels. The first phase of Next Steps Scottsdale will be a community symposium on Sept. 15 to begin the process of addressing the future of our city. There has never been a better time than now to begin to address the future. We need you to be a part of the discussion by participating in this important symposium and voicing your vision for the future of Scottsdale. Please join us!.

Hometown: Scottsdale

Virginia Korte

Profession: Community advocate

President/CEO Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services (STARS)

Real life heroes: I enjoy stories of ordinary people who do the best with what they have. I also admire those who touch the lives of others, altering their lives for the better in ways they don’t even know about or understand…like my dad. He’s been gone since 1998 and I still hear stories of how he had an impact on others’ lives. Latest accomplishment: As president and CEO of STARS, I facilitated a formal partnership and collaboration between the organization and the Scottsdale Unified School District. This collaboration has the potential to benefit special needs children and adults for many years to come. Greatest achievement: I hope it hasn’t happened yet! Why I do what I do: Life is much more fulfilling when I reach outside of myself. Favorite quote: My dad’s: “The speed of the boss is the speed of the gang.” Motto I live by: Angeles Arrien’s Four-Fold Way: “Show up for life; pay attention to what has heart and meaning; speak the truth, without blame or judgment; be open to outcome, not attached to outcome.” *The Legacy Awards honors a Chamber member who has risen above the call of duty over a significant number of years, contributing not only to the Chamber, but also to the

Virginia’s Cause Virgina’s cause, simply put, is building community. Her involvement began in the early 1980s, when her neighborhood struggled to prevent the encroachment of a large commercial development. Since then, her work with nonprofit and charitable organizations has run the gamut, from education, to economic development, to preserving natural resources. Throughout her career, Virginia has been instrumental in such organizations as the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation, Planned Parenthood AZ, and the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce, among many others. She has served on the Governor’s Growing Smarter Advisory Council, Heritage Fund Council for the Arizona Game & Fish Department and the Arizona Town Hall. Throughout the years, however, the most important cause she’s been involved with is the preservation of open space. She was the executive director for the Center for Native and Urban Wildlife and is a past president of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission. “I have a deep seated belief that preservation, for all communities and all natural environments, is the most important vision for our future.”

community at large.

Chairman’s Award* Dale Fingersh President The Right Direction

Hometown: Denver, Colo. Profession: Retired import business executive, avid traveler, wine connoisseur Real life hero(es): My son, Adam, whose achievements and successes epitomize infusing lifelong lessons into one’s day-to-day life. Adam is the type of person who doesn’t go to sleep at night with a sigh of relief, but rather excitement for what tomorrow brings. At 34, he is a vicepresident for Experian Corp. and, in my eyes, has accomplished more at his age than a lot of retirees do in a lifetime. He is a wonderful husband, father and son. It is an honor to have him as my hero. Latest accomplishment: Receiving the Chairman’s Award. To be honored with Karen Whitmer, the Chairman of the Board, simply doesn’t get any better. I was en-route to London when the award was announced, and Karen and Rick Kidder were kind enough to track me down and play a recording of the announcement. This brought tears to my eyes. I continue to enjoy the flavor of this award, as well as my past awards. Greatest achievement: Before moving to Scottsdale, I enjoyed ongoing successful business endeavors that resulted in being named “Man of the Year” two years in a row. This allowed me to travel to Europe and meet with the most prestigious wine makers of the world. After moving to Scottsdale, being involved in the programs and committees of the Scottsdale Area Chamber and being awarded the esteemed Segner and the Legacy awards. *The Chairman’s Award is a special designation bestowed at the discretion of the Board Chair to the one individual who has contributed most to a successful year.

Dale’s Cause When Dale moved to Scottsdale from Denver in 1998, he didn’t waste any time getting acquainted with the community and becoming involved with various organizations, including the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. “When I moved here, I brought with me a strong connection to community service,” he says. “The Chamber has been a milestone for me because it allowed me to understand the spirit of the business and social community that I chose to live in.” According to Dale, the appeal, the cache of the Chamber gives its members the opportunity of involvement. “I took advantage of this membership ‘perk’ and became involved.” That may be an understatement. In the more than 10 years that Dale has been involved with the Chamber, he’s been on 16 committees and served as chair of three. He says he takes his commitment as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Board of Directors very seriously. This such come as no surprise, however, to those who know him and where he comes from. “I grew up in a home where community service was emphasized and found that it was a way of giving back. I learned that this was what established your individual personal identity,” Dale says.

Hometown: Snowflake, Ariz.

Angela Creedon

Profession: Public affairs

Executive Director ASU Public Affairs

Real life heroes: My mom and dad. My mom is a strong Christian with a great sense of humor, while my father is one of the most intelligent and caring men I know. My parents raised me with tremendous values and for that, I am very grateful. Latest accomplishment: I am deeply honored to be recognized by the Scottsdale Chamber with the Segner Award. It is humbling to be recognized by such a great organization and I am pleased they recognized the work I did on behalf of the community and APS. I changed careers after 23 years and, while I value my time there, I’m ready to take on a new chapter in my career. Greatest achievement: My family. I have the kindest and most supportive husband, who I’ve been married to for 21 years. We have two fabulous boys, Josh and Jake, who have grown into terrific young men who laugh often and have a zest for life. Why I do what I do: I am very passionate about my love for Arizona and the communities I support in my position at ASU. I believe in building strong relationships and my role in Public Affairs allows me to work within the communities and support their efforts in building stronger and sustainable places to live. *Named after the Chamber’s first board chairman Wesley Segner, the Segner Award honors those who have followed in his legacy of leadership, community stewardship and

Angela’s Cause When it comes to bringing local businesses and the community together, no one does it better than Angela. As a community development manager for APS, she was responsible for building and fostering relationships between the utilities company and Valley communities to create strong and healthy environments for its residents. Angela is now using that experience and knowhow in her new position as Executive Director of ASU Public Affairs, where she is responsible for ensuring that the university is engaged throughout the Valley and growing and developing its presence in the community. Angela’s dedication to business and community is most evident in her work with the Scottsdale Chamber and the East Valley Partnership. An ardent supporter of strong leadership, she believes public policy focused on business development will allow Arizona to diversify its economy through the creation of jobs, which, in turn, will help to build a sustainable economic future. “We have a number of issues facing our state and these organizations have a progressive view on the solutions. They not only look at the problem, but they take a pro-active approach to problem solving,” she says. “I look forward to continuing my work with them for many years to come.”

active contributions to the success of the Chamber.

Marion Kelly

Profession: Healthcare administration

Director, Office of Community & Business Relations Mayo Clinic

Real life hero: My father, Donald Kelly, Sr. Latest accomplishment: Becoming a member of the AfricanAmerican Leadership Breast Cancer Roundtable, a meeting of African-American leaders in Arizona coming together to help with breast cancer awareness, education and healthcare disparities as they relate to African-Americans. Greatest achievement: Fatherhood—nurturing and raising three children who are on track with their specific educational and career goals. Why I do what I do: My job is different every single day. Whether I’m serving on the Scottsdale Chamber Board, or feeding the less fortunate at St. Vincent de Paul, or singing at a civic event, I enjoy every facet of my job. Favorite quote: My grandfather used to say to me, “Never let them see you sweat.” Motto I live by: Try to make someone’s day GREAT! *Named after the Chamber’s first board chairman Wesley Segner, the Segner Award honors those who have followed in his legacy of leadership, community stewardship and active contributions to the success of the Chamber.

www.scottsdalechamber.com

Marion’s Cause A leader in both the healthcare and social services realms, Marion names two causes he feels very strongly about: the Diversity Leadership Alliance and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. “Both very different organizations that have the same impact on changing lives for the better,” he says. Dedicated to building a community in which every individual is equally respected and empowered, the Diversity Leadership Alliance hosts free monthly workshops geared towards targeted audiences that help build diversity and inclusion awareness. “Every aspect of the community participates in these workshops. The organization’s work is accomplished through corporate employee volunteerism,” says Marion, who is in currently in the planning stages of the 9th Annual DLA Conference, being held Oct. 19 at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown. Marion is also actively involved with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, an organization he says he has served both with sweat by mopping floors in the dinner hall and with planning skills by serving on the Annual Breakfast Planning Committee.

Hometown: Boulder, Colo. Profession: CEO and thought leader Real life heroes: People who do the right thing when no one is looking. Latest accomplishment: Being honored with this award from the Scottsdale Chamber! I’m also proud of growing another successful company—WayPoint Technologies—from the ground up. Greatest achievement: In my professional life, starting my first company, ITIC Inc., in the basement of my home in 1995 and selling it to a Fortune 500 firm five years later. In my personal life, my family. Why I do what I do: I enjoy chaos. Favorite quote: “We are not here for a long time; we are here for a good time.” – Bob Parsons Motto I live by: Today is a gift. *The Rising Star Award recognizes the accomplishments of promising new leaders whose volunteer spirit contributes to the success of the Chamber and the community.

Andrew’s Cause

Volunteer of the Year* Laureen Leston

Business Awareness Resource Executive, Scottsdale Airpark

Hometown: Sterling Heights, Mich. Profession: Business relationship facilitator Real life heroes: Joyce and Don Henry, James Leston and Michelangelo Latest accomplishment: Successfully creating opportunities for business owners to connect, share business and build relationships. Greatest achievement: Landing on my feet—in business, life and skydiving! Why I do what I do: Passion. Passion creates success, happiness and opportunities. Favorite quotes: “Laugh, love and live.” “Life’s a beautiful thing.” “This too shall pass.” Motto I live by: My glass is always half full and bubbling with opportunities. *The Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding volunteer for his/her dedication, commitment and service to the Chamber.

SEPT/OCT | SCOTTSDALE@WORK | 2010

The consummate entrepreneur, Andrew has a head for business since earning a double major in finance and accounting from the University of Colorado, followed by a stint in the Peace Corps where he helped transform a small farm into a building block factory to meet the needs of the housing market in Costa Rica. That business acumen continued as he went on to start four profitable technology companies, including WayPoint Technologies, his latest venture that focuses on web technology. With such a passion for business, it’s no surprise that Andrew’s cause is the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce and the Scottsdale Airpark. “I’ve been involved with the Chamber for four years as a volunteer, board member and current chair of the Airpark committee,” he says. “The Airpark is the second largest economic center in Arizona. Even so, the potential for this area is so much more.” A frequent public speaker, Andrew says he enjoys the interaction and teaching potential that comes with sharing your knowledge and experience with the business community. “It’s important to give back to the community in which you live so that it remains vibrant and enjoyable for the next generation,” he says.

Laureen’s Cause At a young age, Laureen learned that causes and nonprofits were inclusive of family, children, adults, businesses and social groups. “Growing up, my family was always there to help or assist family members who were sickly or wheelchair bound,” she says. “We cared for their needs and ensured they were safe. Whether it was making lunch or going for a walk, we were there.” Having been introduced to giving at a young age, Laureen says it was an easy transition into adulthood. “My involvement with the Scottsdale Lions Club and the Ambassador’s Give It Forward program with the Scottsdale Chamber offers many levels of fulfillment, not only for me personally, but for those receiving the benefits. Seeing the smiles and hearing the heart-felt ‘thanks’ is what giving is all about.” Laureen encourages others to become involved, particularly with the groups that are near and dear to her heart. “If you haven’t attended a Lions meeting or participated in the Give It Forward program, give us a try. We create opportunities within the community and assist in the growth of others,” she says. “My goal is to continually grow the community, one smile at a time.”

Our inventory has gotten tighter. A lot of the great cars are sitting in collection and not for sale. We are seeing a lot of new customers coming in, though. As for prices, in some of the areas, prices are down and some up. Everything goes in cycles and I’ve seen it happen for years in everything from classics and ’50s cars to muscle and modified cars. Cars aren’t going like they were in 2007—that was some crazy money. But we are getting the far market value and as the economy gets stronger, we’ll see the big cars come out again.

How is Barrett-Jackson involved with the Scottsdale community? Why is it important to forge ties with the community and local business? The auction actually started as a charity fundraiser in the ’60s called the “Fiesta de los Auto Elegance.” It was held at the Scottsdale ballpark and helped raise funds for the library and community arts center. Since then, we’ve maintained our focus on the community, primarily groups and nonprofits that support children and veterans, including ChildHelp and the Wounded Warrior Project. In 2001, we established the Barrett-Jackson Cancer Research Fund at TGen in memory of my father and brother, Russ and Brian Jackson. Our pledge is to raise to $1 million dollars for cancer research and therapies.

The couple moved to Scottsdale in 1960 and soon became active in the Classic Car Club of America. That same year, they met fellow car enthusiast Tom Barrett and, in 1968, the trio joined forces to launch the “Fiesta de los Auto Elegance” car show to raise funds for local charities, including the Scottsdale Library and a community art center. evolved and, in 1971, it became the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction. Four decades later, Barrett-Jackson is now run by Nellie and Russ’s son Craig, who had worked actively within the company and at the auction most of his life. He assumed the reins in 1997 and since then, has grown the organization exponentially. “For years, we had been known as an auction selling pre-war classics. When I took over, I asked our clients what type of cars they wanted and started changing the mix of cars to make it more inclusive,” says Jackson, who also became savvy to the power of electronic media. Complete with a presence on Facebook and Twitter, as well as iPhone and Droid apps, the company is reaching out to car enthusiasts all over the world. “I cut the deal with Speed Vision (Speed Channel) and I started offering live phone and online bidding,” he says. “By reaching out with electronic media and the Internet, we created a whole new way of showcasing the auction to people who normally wouldn’t have known it existed.” As for sales, in 2005, Barrett-Jackson began offering every vehicle at “no reserve,” meaning every vehicle was sold to the highest bidder. The result? Groundbreaking sales that reached its peak in 2007 with $112 million in Scottsdale sales alone. Add to that auctions in different markets and you’ve got a recipe for growth and success. “We brought Barrett-Jackson to Palm Beach, Fla., in 2003, followed by Las Vegas in 2008 and, most recently, Orange County, which launched in June,” Jackson says. But when it comes to the most popular and most anticipated, Scottsdale is at the top. “Scottsdale is still the biggest auction and is essentially the blueprint for other markets we’ve expanded to,” Jackson says. “I look at the same attributes Scottsdale has when we look for other venues: shopping, golf, dining and lifestyle elements. Scottsdale truly is a destination for our clients.”

Which Way

Scottsdale

Greatness or Mediocrity?

“It is our responsibility to help facilitate the community vision about the future of our city to ensure that the next generation of Scottsdale is as great or greater than those that preceded it.” - Rick Kidder, president and CEO, Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce www.scottsdalechamber.com

Vision and dedication of Scottsdale’s leaders plays a key role in the city’s success Story | Michelle Jacoby

T

hroughout history, it has been the unconventional and unwavering vision of community leaders that has turned villages into empires, small towns into metropolises. There’s no question that any successful community is driven by the people who lead it and in Scottsdale, that sentiment couldn’t be more true. From strong political figures to nationally recognized business executives, Scottsdale has had its share of creative yet tactical individuals whose vision has elevated the city to its position as one of the most sought-after and desirable business locales in the country. Scottsdale business leaders are continuing that legacy of visionary leadership with Next Steps Scottsdale, a multi-year initiative designed to engage the Scottsdale business community in providing strong direction and viable solutions to grow Scottsdale into a powerhouse of business and commerce. 2010 | SCOTTSDALE@WORK | SEPT/OCT

Building on the 2003 “Which Way Scottsdale” report, the initiative seeks to address the city’s current issues and tomorrow’s needs through careful analysis conducted by the Morrison Institute for Public Policy. Next Steps Scottsdale will take report findings further by engaging the local business community in building an action plan for future economic growth.

How it All Began “Nearly seven years ago, a group of Scottsdale business leaders gathered to discuss issues before our city. They saw the greatness that had been the building of the brand of Scottsdale and the incredible value of the business and residential synergy that made Scottsdale one of the finest communities in the country to live and work,” says Rick Kidder, president and CEO of the Scottsdale Chamber. “These business leaders, heads of some of Scottsdale’s largest employers, had the wisdom to understand that whatever strong opinions they might hold, those opinions were meaningless on their own if they failed to match the desires and hopes of the community as a whole. They did not seek to publish their own thoughts, but rather to understand where the people of Scottsdale were regarding the future,” he continues. The group then partnered with the Morrison Institute at ASU, who was charged with conducting a study and developing a public report that gave a true depiction of where the city was in terms of business and growth.

A Call to Action Described as a call to action, “Which Way Scottsdale?” highlighted the many benefits and positive qualities of the community, but also found a community divided—one that could potentially lose its identity if it did not come together as a whole. 16

SEPT/OCT | SCOTTSDALE@WORK | 2010

“More than any single motivation for the creation of ‘Which Way Scottsdale?’ was the intense desire of these business leaders to seek the path to the next generation of our great city,” says Kidder. “It required a bold move, sometimes tough for CEOs with strong opinions.” Thanks to the visionary leadership of those Scottsdale business leaders, the report is being resurrected and used as the foundation for Next Steps Scottsdale, a multi-year initiative, which kicks

off Sept. 15 with a one-day symposium that will discuss and develop solutions for the economic development and advancement of Scottsdale. “Next Steps Scottsdale is about helping the community come to grips with an exciting future,” says Kidder. “It is our responsibility as business leadersto help facilitate the community vision about the future of our city to ensure that the next generation of Scottsdale is as great or greater than those that preceded it.”

ISSUE: I was told that I may be able to recoup more of my Research & Development costs in 2010….Is this true?

ISSUE: I have a business located in the Airpark Area, how can I get more involved?

ISSUE: Can an on-site healthcare clinic save my company money in 2010 and 2011?

Answer: You may benefit from new rules pertaining to Research & Development (R&D) tax credits under Arizona law. Historically, qualifying R&D expenditures were recouped by businesses through nonrefundable tax credits. The credits offset current income tax, with any unused credits carried forward. The Arizona legislature passed SB 1254 recently, which made Arizona R&D credits partially refundable, regardless of taxable income. Essentially, certain businesses may file an application with Arizona to receive a grant-type allocation of a $5 million credit pool. The $5 million allocation is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so time is of the essence. You should speak with your tax advisor regarding your specific circumstances.

Answer: Getting involved in your local community is a great way to increase the visibility of your business, generate leads and build referral sources. The Scottsdale Chamber has many opportunities to get involved including: • Joining the Airpark Committee or one of our 5 subcommittees • Getting connected with our Airpark Linked-In Group • Helping plan our Run Around the Runway Event • Attending our quarterly Meet your Neighbors Luncheon • Attending our monthly First Friday Airpark Breakfast (FAB) events.

Answer: An on-site healthcare clinic would offer your company many methods to reduce healthcare costs through benefit claim reduction and avoiding catastrophic health illness, decreasing your company’s annual occurrence rates. Your employees will have easy access to the on-site clinic and receive immediate healthcare for wellness, preventative care, chronic illness, and, if necessary, referral to specialists within a week. Our onsite clinics are free to visit and will offer your employees generic medications on-site. With an on-site clinic your employees will be healthier and more productive saving your company more money in 2010 and 2011

ISSUE: How can healthcare price transparency impact how employees use their healthcare plans?

ISSUE: If I sell or transfer a membership interest in a limited liability company (LLC) in Arizona, do I need to worry about whether it is a “security” for purposes of the securities statutes?

ISSUE: My social media efforts are so time consuming. What can I do to make these efforts more valuable?

Answer: The figures are staggering. America’s healthcare system is expected to double to be a $4 trillion industry by 2015. Unfortunately, the “buyers” of health care products and services are largely unaware of the overall price being paid and do little to alter their unhealthy lifestyles that escalate the cost. The solution? Patients must learn to take personal accountability, making a shift from being a passive patient to an active consumer. To do that, they’ll need the help of employers, as well as healthcare and health plan providers. With a well thought out healthcare plan, the responsibility for living a healthier life is returned to the individual, ultimately slowing the growing total healthcare expenditures the nation is facing.

Answer: In Arizona, any “investment contract” is considered a “security” for purposes of the securities laws. By definition, if a person invests money in a common enterprise and is led to expect profits solely from the efforts of a third party, it is a security. This includes real property investment contracts, transferable shares or other indebtedness. So a partnership or membership interest in an LLC may be considered a security under Arizona securities laws. Since the final answer depends largely on the level of the investors’ control, if any, each instance must be analyzed on a case-by-case basis.

Answer: Social media is such a time sensitive way of getting your message(s) across. For businesses, it is critical that what you place is truly valuable or informative to your followers. If it is just touting things of interest to you as the business owner, then you risk the loss of many followers. Offer deals, powerful information on your services or great benefits that show why your business rises to the top. Your followers will multiply and your efforts will not be wasted.

QUOTABLE: Delegating work works, provided the one delegating works, too. - Robert Half 18

Steve Helm

Senior Property Manager, Westcor Growing up in Grand Rapids, Mich., Steve Helm got his start in retail very early on. In high school, he worked as a stock boy in a fabric and yarn shop, where he was eventually given an offer he couldn’t refuse. “The owner was interested in growing his business, so he offered to pay for my college education if I agreed to work for him for two years after [graduating],” he says. Helm not only kept his promise, he ended up working in the fabric business for 10 years after graduating from Kalamazoo College with a degree in economics in 1971. Soon after, he joined the Taubman Company, where he launched his career in shopping center management and development. “The first center I managed was The Mall at Short Hills in New Jersey, which, today, is one of the finest malls in the country,” says Helm. From there, he went on to work on Cherry Creek in Denver and the Biltmore Fashion Park in Phoenix in 1995. Two years later, however, he was transferred back to Detroit to oversee the opening of several shopping centers. But his love for the Valley remained and in 2005, an opening for property manager at Scottsdale Fashion Square gave him the opportunity to return. “My wife and I moved back and have loved living here ever since,” he says. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Biltmore, Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Fashion Square, Helm has seen the centers grow and evolve over the years. He has also been involved in a number of significant milestones for the company, including the recent mall expansion that brought Arizona’s first and only Barneys New York to Scottsdale. “Since coming to Fashion Square, I’ve been involved in the complete renovation of our valet parking area, floor tile replacement in the original mall and the expansion [featuring the] new Barneys New York department store,” says Helm. But his responsibilities don’t end there. Helm is also an active member of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce and the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, and co-chairs the Westcor Volunteer Committee, which volunteered more than 10,000 hours in various community programs last year. As easy as he makes it look, Helm says he’s been faced with some significant challenges in his career—namely opening four shopping centers in 2001, which was made even more taxing with the 9/11 disaster. “That task taught me to be very organized, to surround myself with great people and to always have a positive attitude,” he says. “And to always remind myself that this is shopping—not brain surgery!”

Q&A Childhood ambition I wanted to be an attorney, which I’m glad I didn’t do. I’m having too much fun in retail.

Worst fear Heights. It’s even difficult for me to look over the railing on the upper level of the shopping center.

Guilty pleasure I love a good gin and tonic after work.

Best trait My smile.

Worst trait My weight. It’s been a constant battle, although right now, I’m winning!

Motto Treat others the way you want to be treated.
