Mouthful of Music DINING EVENTS
These days, DJ’s and their incredible sounds can be heard in the most unusual places. Many local restaurants and retail shops are bringing the spin factor to their establishments through local sounds by setting up DJs to do their thing and add to the excitement in a way that only the latest hits can bring. Olive & Ivy, a longtime Scottsdale Waterfront hot spot, is spicing up evenings on Fridays and Saturdays with a top-notch DJ whose music mingles beautifully with the atmosphere of the dining room, bar and patio. Adjacent to the entry and bar, this normally elegant Italian eatery becomes a hot night spot for crowds of all ages.

Old Town Scottsdale has become one of the best-known spots for nightlife in America. With more than 40 nightclubs, restaurants and dance clubs spread throughout a one-milewide circle southeast of Camelback and Scottsdale roads, this mecca for entertainment, drink and dance is easily navigated by golf carts. With safety a major concern, golf cart companies are dressing up elongated golf carts to continue the fun between hot spots. With lights, music and even standup comedy (or sit down, in this case), the entertainment never has to stop and patrons can get around easily and without concern for parking, drinking and driving, or getting lost.

NIGHTLIFE
Step up to the bar any given Sunday and be met with a surprise. The Gladly, a Valley hot spot for dinner, lunch and brunch, will serve you a complimentary “punch.” The punch is its Sunday concoction that each guest at the bar will be asked to try. It could be a new drink for the menu, a creative beverage the staff is interested in testing out, or a classic libation meant to thrill anyone willing to saddle up to the bar that day.

Wagon Train: Food Truck Style
The hottest culinary craze is the food truck. Gourmet food and drinks on wheels is the latest in good eats, and they are landing in a neighborhood, office complex or fair near you. Favorites include Luncha Libre Gourmet Street, which specializes in creative quesadillas, street tacos and fruit juices served in a mason jar (that you get to keep). The Emerson Fry Bread truck is a true pleasure for the palate. Pick your protein and then order it in the style you prefer — ranging from Indian taco style to taco bowl salad. Don’t miss out on the traditional fry bread desserts made with powdered sugar, cinnamon and, of course, honey. The famed Grilled Cheese Truck is a must. Everything from the classic grilled cheese sandwich to the Cheesy Mac, which is made with macaroni and cheese. Get it fully loaded and include barbecued pork and caramelized onions. Each of the trucks can be found throughout the Valley. Check their websites or follow their social media outlets to discover where they will be next.

Biltmore MicrobreweryPaired Dinners
The Arizona Biltmore is full of suds by pairing local breweries with special menus at Frank & Albert’s restaurant. The events are monthly, with the October event showcasing the well-known Valley favorite SanTan Brewing Company. “Leading microbreweries today are creating wonderfully sophisticated and nuanced beers that are a joy to pair with original dishes that we create for the Biltmore Beer Dinners,” says Executive Chef Gordon Maybury. “Our Biltmore Beer Dinners are multi-faceted culinary experiences at great value that wow the casual beer lover and dedicated aficionado alike.” The dinners are held each month through December in the private Sunroom at the resort’s Frank & Albert’s restaurant. The four-course dinners are $45 per person; tax and gratuity are additional.

Skin Deep
As the weather changes, you may start to notice changes in your skin. However, there is a difference between skin type and skin conditions. Skin type is what an individual is born with; skin conditions are caused by external and internal factors, which may include medications and even stress level. Investigating and diagnosing an individual’s skin type along with understanding the triggers that lead to skin conditions are key for the licensed skin therapist, who can use tools such as Dermalogica's face mapping to prescribe the best course of action to achieve your healthiest skin. —Sheldon “Ski” Kobylanski, a licensed therapist, Dermalogica expert, and owner of Skin By Ski

Flower Child With locations in Santa Monica, Scottsdale and a second Phoenix one coming soon at 100 East Camelback, Flower Child is a “healthy food for a happy world” fast-casual concept that prides itself on freshness and on buying from ranchers who “love their animals.” An orderat-counter setup, it was named by Nation’s Restaurant News as one of the top restaurant debuts of 2014.

Steak 44 The high-end ambiance-filled steakhouse owned by Dennis, Michael and Jeff Mastro and Scott Troilo has wowed Valley diners since its 2014 opening with its seafood and hand-cut steaks. see all the talent and creativity making its way into this area,” Fox says. “There’s been some great restaurant openings recently that are sure to become Arcadia staples, like the cool hole-in-the-wall Pig’s Meow, the original Postino, and Sip Coffee & Beer on Indian School and 36th Street.” One of the trailblazers for the Arcadia restaurant boom was Postino, a wine café that opened in the historic Arcadia Post Office building in 2001. Craig DeMarco, who co-owns Postino and its umbrella company Upward Projects, has witnessed the full evolution of the dining scene. What once was largely strip malls and chain restaurants has transformed into dynamic concepts forged by creative restaurateurs for a dining public that has become more sophisticated via the explosion of reality cooking shows and websites obsessing over food. His company, which is also behind the Central Avenue restaurants Federal Pizza, Joyride Taco House and Windsor, set the stage for community-focused restaurants in the Arcadia area. DeMarco says the Arcadia dining scene has changed “dramatically” since the opening of Postino, which was a trailblazer of the new Arcadia wave, with its adaptive reuse of space before “adaptive reuse” was a household term. “When I was looking at that site [Postino], I must’ve taken over 100 people to see it and I could not get anyone to think it was a good idea,” DeMarco relates. Those same 100 people might think opening a restaurant in Arcadia is still not a good idea — but now for the opposite reason: There are already too many good restaurants. Despite the success of competitors, DeMarco says, “Postino Arcadia has never been busier. We’re having our best year ever and it’s our 14th year. I’m a firm believer in that all ships rise.”

How many successful restaurants does it take for a place to be worthy of a “dining mecca” label? There’s no good answer to that but, by unscientific measures — or just by the looks of it — Arcadia and the surrounding areas seem to be on a fast path to mecca-worthiness. The culinary choices continue to grow and get more inventive, and lucky neighborhood diners are more and more tempted to eschew home-cooked meals for the newest dining experience. With fresh concepts popping up on Camelback and to the north and south of that bustling corridor — combined with Arizona’s restaurant industry being projected to post the largest growth in sales and jobs (as it did in 2014) in the country — the stars (celestial and those used for restaurant ratings) are aligning in Arcadia and adjacent Biltmore, Paradise Valley and Old Town Scottsdale. Steak 44, the creation of the Mastro brothers who are best-known for building the Mastro’s franchise, dramatically revamped the old Cork ’N Cleaver location at 44th Street and Camelback. This concept, while not out of the norm for a high-end seafood and chop house, is crawling with business executives, sports stars and celebrities and has quickly become a concept to mimic, with private tables, multi-room dining areas and an exclusive bar scene. Another new concept for the area is Sam Fox’s latest creation on Camelback Road, Flower Child, which emphasizes healthy eating. That concept co-exists and thrives alongside the other many Fox themes in the area, some older, some new. “We get totally inspired by the Arcadia neighborhood and all the really cool buildings and spaces,” says Sam Fox, nationally recognized founder of Fox Restaurant Concepts. “There’s tons of history here, like the old-school hand car wash on 40th Street. We opened North Italia there and were able to preserve that building by turning it into a neighborhood dining destination. Our cold-pressed juice shop, Juby True, is also in a great spot — a small lot off of 39th Street. It’s right in the heart of Arcadia and great to pop in and out of.” An improving economy is powering the national, state and neighborhood restaurant industry. And here in Arizona, new job creation in food service sales will grow faster than the national average for the 16th year in a row. “I’m thrilled to

Driving by Scottsdale Fashion Square any time in the past year, you may have noticed an array of construction equipment and “coming soon” signs. These vague signs have been foreshadowing big plans in store for Fashion Square. We recently saw the opening of the first of Fashion Square’s two major renovations: a Dick’s Sporting Goods store. This massive, 50,000-square-foot addition constitutes a whole new wing for the mall. Move over New York City and Los Angeles, (well, at least edge over a little). Here at home, Scottsdale is quickly becoming a city with its own entertainment district, where spectators can attend world-class comedy, concerts and other cultural events. Stand Up Scottsdale is a unique theater designed specifically for comedy. Forget the gym — these shows will have you laughing your way to six-pack abs in no time. “We are locally owned, we are affordable, and we only show original and relevant comedy,” owner Howard Hughes proudly states. Shows run Wednesday through Sunday nights, and prices usually begin at around $12. Grab a bite to eat before or during the show at Sugar Rae’s BBQ Kitchen. LiveWire in Old Town is Scottsdale’s newest and nicest live entertainment venue, hosting a variety of shows from
comedy to local and touring bands. The venue has multiple event spaces, including a VIP room, lounge and bar. The stage does not just look great, it sounds great, too. “It’s a state-of-the-art venue that has a sound system that has garnered national attention and has impressed all the artists that have come to perform here,” said spokesperson Jamie Killin. The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts is celebrating a milestone this year, 40 years of connecting artists with the people. For the upcoming season the center is welcoming current and future stars. “All are worthwhile in their own right!” exclaims spokesperson Beth Renfro. Margaret Cho, Martin Short and Alan Cumming are just a few of the spectacular talent sure to entertain and inspire this year.
Orchestral Maneuvers

At Home: Arcadia Architecture Is Trend to Follow
EACH MONTH
Local architect leading with transitions in living space BY HENRY MACKEY
In Arcadia, neighborhoods are dominated by traditional, ranch-style houses, with a scattering of contemporary homes providing the occasional contrast. The differentiating factor between a ranch house and other types, such as contemporary, is the shape of the roof. “With the contemporary [homes], there are more clean and horizontal elements, and with the traditional [homes], there are steeper pitched roofs,” says Mark Candelaria, award-winning architect and owner of Candelaria Design Associates and long-time homebuilder in Arcadia. Because the traditional ranch style is becoming dated, many homeowners are beginning to crave a new, more daring look. “We are doing a lot of transitional-style houses in Arcadia,” says Candelaria. This new look varies slightly from the ranch-style houses while still basing it on the outline of a ranch house. Transitional houses are generally traditional houses with contemporary elements. Some elements that denote a transitional house are lighter color choices, numerous windows and glass, and the ranch-style pitched roof. “All ages like the transitional style because it’s comfortable yet it’s a little more upscale and contemporary,” says Candelaria. Contrasts between a traditional and transitional home may sound minor, but they make all the difference. “The outcome of the house really depends on the details of it,” says Candelaria.

Á LA CARTE
The Henry Coffee Bar: XV
BY CHRISTOPHER ADAM
Gone are the days when your only dining option was to visit a stuffy, white-tablecloth restaurant if you wanted to get some fantastic eats and incredible service. Meet The Henry. Pulling up to The Henry off of Camelback Road, you enter a dauntingly chaotic pool of luxury cars swarming for the next available spot. Then find your way to the entrance, with The Henry’s curvy vintage arrow directing you inside. (But before you go in, how about a selfie in front of the arrow?) Inside is spacious and familiar feeling. To the left, you see groups mingling on Victorian-style couches; to the right, baristas brewing espresso at the adjacent coffee bar. You’re instantly thrown into a hive of workers, mingling friends and lively families. One of the greatest attributes of The Henry is the openness of the entire space. Fox Restaurant Concepts has managed to tastefully combine elements of classic and modern design throughout the restaurant. Notice the Eames-style chairs across from forest green, velvet booths. Sandwiched between are butcher-block tables stocked with ceramic dishes and cutlery. Menu selections are both recognizable and appetizing. For starters, the short rib potstickers are a delicious twist on an Asian favorite, or try the prairie breeze cheddar
popovers as a simple and fun way to start your meal. While the menu isn’t huge, you’ll still have hard time deciding from all of the tasty options. The go-to entrée is, obviously, the roasted chicken. If you go with this option, the next tough decision will be which of the seven sides to choose. Another dish is the wood-grilled pork chop, which is cooked to perfection and served with cauliflower polenta and Bloomsdale spinach. Choose wisely, because any of the entrées will land you in the clean-plate club. To drink, The Henry features great-tasting, inexpensive wines “on tap” (by the glass) alongside traditional offerings. If your day has been rough, treat yourself to the Boulevardier off the cocktail menu. All the employees are approachable and friendly. You’re greeted with a smile at every interaction, and all of the wait staff are genuinely happy to make your dining experience perfect. There’s certainly no reason to argue The Henry’s self-proclaimed title of “Greatest Neighborhood Restaurant.” THE HENRY & THE HENRY COFFEE BAR:XV 4455 E. If you’re in the mood for a quick bite or a place to sip coffee and work, head over to the coffee bar. Serving breakfast and lunch, the coffee bar goes beyond beverages. With no walls dividing this space from the rest of the restaurant, you get the same Henry feel in a more intimate form. It has all the usual espresso drinks and artful specialty coffee beverages that help you start your day. Try the wildflower chai — a delicious mix of vanilla, espresso, and chai tea — and claim your spot around one of the marble tables.
DID YOU KNOW The Henry’s name came from a house remodel. At the time, restaurateur Sam Fox was remodeling his bathroom and saw the name imprinted on the spout of a faucet he just purchased. The way it had looked and sounded was perfect for his next restaurant. he coffee bar inside The Henry is named “XV.” The T roman numerals signify The Henry as the 15th Fox Restaurant concept. The word “larder” is found on the awnings in front of the restaurant. While it traditionally means a cool place to store food, The Henry uses the word to signify a cool place to gather.
