Brunching Out!

Midday eats and drinks that have it all BY MIKE HUNTER

To brunch is to say that you are going to truly indulge in a mid-morning/midday meal that can include everything from bacon (the all-important staple) to gourmet Bloody Mary’s to carving stations of prime rib — and just about everything in-between, depending on where you go. Well, this vicinity is chock-full of opportunities to graze, guzzle and galivant. Way atop the small hill in the center of the Arizona Biltmore is the Wrigley Mansion, where Geordie’s Restaurant is the place to be. In addition to views of nearly the entire Valley, this old, Spanish-style mansion built in the 1930s is home to a brunch that is

Geordie’s at the Wrigley Mansion

LON’s at the Hermosa Inn

more than memorable. James Beard Award-winning chef Christopher Gross is in charge. His take on the elegant and culinary experience guests will have has influenced the menu and made brunch at Geordie’s world-class. The made-to-order omelet station means building whatever you like for a fluffy and flavorful egg dish. Across the room is the prime rib and leg of lamb carving station — unique to Phoenix — where one can enjoy all the fixings to go along with the meats. Included in the price are Mimosas, champagne by the glass and wine. It is truly a midday experience that makes brunch exactly what you want.

On the other side of our vicinity is Six Degrees Urban Kitchen. Located in the Shops at Gainey Ranch, this is a brunch-

hot syrup available to dowse them in. Guests come from all over the Valley to try the Chilaquiles Verdes and Rojos. One

lovers haven. Very crowded and fun and fancy, this urban hotspot almost always has a long wait — but fear not. Here is one of the most extensive self-serve Bloody Mary bars that exists. Nearly a buffet in and of itself, this abundant bar is the perfect time-filler while you wait for your table. From shrimp and sausage spears to every veggie known to man, it offers patrons everything to make the perfect drink/hors d’oeuvre before the big meal. Partake in the apple-pie pancakes. They are somewhat sweet, but worth the calories given the warm butter and piping

red and one green, this dish is made with braised chicken, radish, cilantro, queso fresco and crème fraîche and is served on crispy tortilla chips. For the full Arizona effect, Lon’s at the Hermosa is brunch at its all-time best. This Santa Fe-style hideaway boutique hotel offers up an indigenous brunch at its namesake restaurant that connoisseurs from all over the world relish. We are home to it. Right here in Paradise Valley. After your serving of the Monkey Bread, you’ll have many choices for your main entrée that include the Huevos

Rancheros, made with fry bread and black beans. On the sweeter side is the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, which will melt in your mouth and force a return visit — or a second order. The Hacienda Brunch for two is a special at Lon’s that cannot be passed up. It includes a starter, choice of two entrées and two featured beverages that range from the Kombucha or an array of Marys (that’s Bloody Marys). This little package will only add to the incredible atmosphere of this retreat, whether you sit inside or outside. The extensive and quaint patio is just perfect at certain times of year. Brunch is a great time to convene with family and friends over the weekend. We are home to a fun and flavorful variety of options right here in our vicinity. From patios to fascinating décor to diner-like settings, Arcadia, Paradise Valley and Old Town can offer up experiences that can make brunch a verb: brunching. 6 DEGREES URBAN KITCHEN 8989 N. That special antique, gift or home accessory that no one else has is a true find. Several retail shops in our vicinity are known for their original pieces; whether it be a book, a trinket, a piece of furniture or a work of art, some local shop owners pride themselves on finding the more unique items to keep customers coming and to offer the sophisticated shopper precious and unique items that become all their own. Cornelia Park, located in Biltmore Fashion Park, is perhaps best known as the premier purveyor of unique works of MacKenzie-Childs — the time-honored name in home furnishings and ceramics, handmade on a small farm in rural New York. From plates to planters, these originals are art-inspired pieces that say individuality. Designer and owner French Thompson showcases the wearable works of more than 30 world-acclaimed artists in his jewelry store, French Designer Jeweler, in Old Town Scottsdale. Unique and timeless pieces made of precious metals and gemstones are presented for tastes ranging from the whimsical to the mystical — and even some traditional. A treasured book or one-of-a-kind signed edition is a unique gift for the discerning collector. The Poisoned Pen owner Barbara Peters opened the independent bookstore in Old Town Scottsdale’s arts district in 1989 specializing in current and classic works of mystery, suspense, historical and literary fiction, and literature of the American Southwest. Many of the books on its shelves are autographed first editions and imports. For the whole family — kids in particular — Garage Boutique is a fun place to shop for original and one-of-a-kind items for kids (of all ages). Toys, baby gifts, crafts, clothing and other unique and even quirky gift ideas are on hand in this exciting boutique. While there, remember a bygone era with retro games and candies that will introduce your young ones to products of the past.

Meet the Unique Cornelia Park Did you know: In addition to being the largest retailer of MackenzieChilds products, this boutique also carries small furniture, home furnishings, dishes and elaborate holiday pieces. 2502 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix (602) 955-3195 • corneliapark.com

French Designer Jeweler Did you know: Unlike many jewelers in the area, French Thompson shares his interest in the art of jewelry and design through the many shows and events he presents, which include the Visiting Artist Series. 7148 Main St., Scottsdale (480) 994-4717 • frenchonmain.com

Garage Boutique Did you know: Following Garage on social media is a great way to get to know what’s new at this fun retailer. Posts of new products, gift ideas and more will keep customers going back. 7144 E. Stetson Dr., Scottsdale (480) 556-6900 • garageboutique.com

The Poisoned Pen Did you know: The people behind The Poisoned Pen are also publishers. Poisoned Pen Press is a company dedicated to publishing excellence in mystery. It also often hosts local mystery-themed conferences. 4014 N. Goldwater Blvd., Scottsdale (480) 947-2974 • poisonedpen.com

Museum of the West: Art, Artifacts and Architecture

Scottsdale, “The West’s Most Western Town,” also boasts True West magazine’s 2018 Reader’s Choice winner of the nation’s Best Western Museum

Photos courtesy of Museum of the West

BY MIKE HUNTER

There’s a timeless fascination for the American West of the post-Civil War era endlessly romanticized in movies and ballads and art. Celebrate a goodly selection of those movies with a visit to Scottsdale’s Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. Displayed through September 16 from the museum’s permanent Rennard Strickland Collection of Western Film History is the inaugural exhibition of more than 100 Western film posters and lobby cards — dating from the 1890s to the mid-1980s. Rotating exhibitions will feature others of the 5,000 items that memorialize the cowboys, Native Americans and history of

the movie industry as well as the power of the West’s cultural legacies. Other movie posters, lining the walls of the orientation theater, help set the mood for the short video presentations on the art and history. Fine art is a strong focus throughout the museum, starting outside its doors with statues that include Diamond Bloom by contemporary artist Curtis Pittman. Paintings and bronzes of iconic Western images by premier artists include Thomas Moran, Alfred Jacob Miller, Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. Vintage photos by noted photographer Edward S. Curtis are wonderful examples of “gold tone” prints in addition to adding

to the historical record of their time. While the art also expresses history, other items expressly represent historical events. These include a presentation-style pipe tomahawk that belonged to Captain Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, and artifacts associated with explorer Kit Carson. Other memorabilia of the West fill the 43,000-square-foot, architecturally awarded building. Showcased within a set straight out of an old Western movie is everything from hats to spurs, including chaps in amazing textural variety, sheriff’s badges and handcuffs, saloon gambler paraphernalia, and a seeming forest of saddles. Check your knowledge of famous people as you, first, peruse the faces greeting you along the Heritage Gallery — and then refer to their bios provided behind the photos. Interactive pieces include creatively themed games, such as a Chutes & Ladders, Western landscape version, that contribute to the museum’s goal of immersing guests in the essence of the American West. Already an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West will gain additional resources through its recent partnership with Arizona State University. 3830 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale (480) 686-9539 scottsdalemuseumwest.org

CONTOUR Condos Are Biltmore Luxury

Located in the heart of the Biltmore area and picking up its soul BY RAEANNE MARSH

You’ve probably seen CONTOUR on Campbell taking shape from the ground up, as it is located in the heart of the Biltmore area, just south of the 24th Street/Camelback Road intersection that was recently designated one of the hottest intersections in town. Well, the upscale condominium community is now completed and its homeowners have begun to move in. There are two new furnished models — a two-bedroom Garden Collection home and a one-bedroom residence — available for tours. One is a 1,350-square-foot, split-plan, two-bedroom corner home with an expansive patio of approximate 537 square feet — a distinctive feature of the Garden Collection and a unique feature for new-build condos in Phoenix. The other condo is approximately 1,000 square feet, a one-bedroom plan that faces east and affords views of Camelback Mountain. The stylish interiors were designed by Scottsdale-based Est Est. The CONTOUR sales gallery now occupies a first floor Garden Collection home and provides a convenient space for buyers to select their one-, two- or three-bedroom floor plan and view first-hand the building amenities and its high-quality concrete construction. “The completion of the project and the residents moving into their new homes is the culmination of a lot of hard work by everyone involved,” says Elizabeth Schloss, director of operations at LIVURBN, a developer of boutique luxury condominium and town home properties for residents who embrace the urbanism movement. LIVURBN digs deep into the character and heritage of surrounding neighborhoods to understand the history, pulse and presence so each community is immediately embedded in the local fabric. “We feel like this a community residents will be proud to own.”

Gino’s East of Chicago Where love of pizza runs deep BY RAEANNE MARSH

Gino’s East of Chicago brought a little of its namesake city with it when the pizza parlor expanded into Phoenix. The walls are hung with pictures of the city’s iconic landmarks. But there’s still plenty of room for the brand’s signature décor element: guests’ signatures and personal messages scrawled on every visible wall surface — even such seemingly inaccessible spots as the topmost stretches at the ceiling edge. Guests embraced the opportunity so eagerly that the Phoenix store, which

opened just over a year ago, is already on successive layers of the managementencouraged graffiti. A few strategically placed big-screen TV’s afford sports viewing to all the seats in the house, whether in the main dining room, the smaller room behind it, or the lounge and its patio extension. There’s plenty of variety on the menu, but the family-owned operation is justly well known for its distinctive deep-dish pizza. The crust is more reminiscent of corn bread than the common stretched

DID YOU KNOW The crust-topped-by-tomato-sauce-topped-by-cheeses-topped-by-other-toppings order of flat-bread pizza is turned upside-down for deep-dish pizzas because the longer baking time required for the thicker crust could cause the cheeses to burn if they were on top.

yeast dough, and retains is fluffy, flaky character even reheated. Tasty sauce and a flavorful mix of cheeses — also proprietary recipes — are in perfect proportion to complement rather than overwhelm one another. Recognizing a “deep dish boom,” the owners added an extreme version of the deep-dish pizza, DeepAF — featuring 33 percent more dough, 75 percent more cheese and double the toppings — to the lineup last year. And while it may be no surprise that there’s thin-crust pizza, too, some of the dessert options may well surprise: beignets, tiramisu and, from local vendors, apple crumble and lemon sorbet. Lunch specials aside from pizza include an Italian beef sandwich, a turkey club and hot salami, each served on its own special bread and with a salad and drink — accommodating lunch hour schedules

with a promised 15-minute prep time and the convenience of a call-ahead option. One of the regular weekly specials is Family Night on Tuesdays, with free buzz time games in addition to pizza, salad, mozzarella sticks and soda. Gino’s East brought in Eddie Matney, an award-winning chef and a leader in the local culinary community, as a kitchen consultant to contribute R&D on quality and tweaks to improve flavor. “We’re not as corporate out here,” says Dalton Derenne, general manager of the Gino’s East Arizona location.
