As the gallery’s juror, Holly Roberts has selected 33 artworks out of 385 entries in Tilt Gallery’s international competition, “Photography Re-Imagined V: The Artist’s Hand, International Juried Show — One-of-a-Kind MixedMedia Photography Imagery.” The selected works will be displayed at Tilt Gallery January 7–30. NIGHTLIFE SHOPPING
Fox Cigar Bar is new to Old Town Scottsdale, as the company expands from the single location it opened in Gilbert in 2010. The concept includes cigar sales and expertise, a smoking room and a full bar. The humidor room allows the store to stock premium cigars you can smoke on premises or for your collection at home. TVs, surround-sound music and an inviting atmosphere make this the perfect hangout for a cigar and your favorite whiskey. The bar is well stocked to match the cigar selection. Cutters, lighters and accessories round out this smoke-shop-meets-local-bar motif.

We all know Vincent’s On Camelback, but how many of us have been to Vincent’s Market Bistro just behind the main landmark restaurant? It is a simple, quaint and somewhat rustic get-away to the south of France, offering great products and food items for sale or to eat in. The bistro has an outdoor French countryside appeal and food that is very affordable and authentically French. It is an extension of the success of the restaurateur’s Saturday Farmers Market.

There’s nothing like the turn of a new year to get yourself into great health (or even back into great health). Our vicinity is home to many businesses that address themselves to making us healthy through diet, activities and fundamental, allaround good living. Instead of focusing narrowly on losing weight, as was the norm in years past, exposing some of the great ways to eat healthy is a definite trend in business through companies like Juby True, a juice bar of sorts that offers juices and foods that let you do everything from cleansing to simply enjoying a sweet beverage with good nutrition in mind. Along those same lines is Kaleidoscope Juice, located at the Optima Sonoran Village and in Old Town Scottsdale. Kaleidoscope is all about energy through great ingredients and quality foods and juices, including green juices, which it promotes as providing a virtually immediate health boost. Nékter Juice

Sourced ingredients and special blends to expose flavor and nutrients is what this Andrew Weil, M.D.-inspired menu is all about. pair them with healthy living — a real advantage to living in the vicinity. A healthy life includes a great amount of activity. Hiking, working out, taking walks — it is all activity and it is all good for the mind, body and spirit. At Orangetheory Fitness, the CrossFit fitness centers, it is all about scheduled results and getting in shape and better health by following instruction. One of the healthiest ways to get started or to keep going is to work on yourself with a personal trainer or a small boutique fitness establishment here in the vicinity that will certainly work your body but also focus on your spirit. Reformed Pilates is a studio that fuses Pilates and cycling for a great low-impact, highintensity strength training. The days of washing your own car seem to be gone in world where a clean, shiny vehicle is a must — and all the more valued in a dusty, dry domain like the Valley. Driving in and getting “the works” or a “VIP” carwash is as easy as knowing where to go. It’s all location, location, location in our vicinity, with simple solutions from the quick “express” wash to the full “detail.” Water waste, long lines and taking hours to complete a wash are a thing of the past. Today, these car wash companies are all about satisfying the customer and getting it done fast. It’s a quality wash job (with the exception of a few wet spots here and there), and a wax and other options can be added on as well. Taking just a little longer but providing a higher level of service, the Lindstrom Family Auto Wash on Indian School Road has been hand-washing and -drying cars for decades. The quality products used and the attention to detail ensure a first-class experience (as carwashes go) and a spotless outcome. With gleaming tires and even a fresh scent, your car is good to go for another week at least. Many services, including hand-detailing, are offered. Family-owned and -operated since the late ’50s is The Carwasher in Old Town Scottsdale. Known for its great care and use of cloth brushes to protect the car, this landmark offers many services that can accommodate the car owner’s every need. This includes an express wash where the driver simply pays outside and drives through the wash tunnel, then goes on his way looking pretty darn cleaned. Jacksons Car Wash purchased Danny’s Family Car Wash, the local trailblazer and longtime leader in luxe one-stop car care, in August 2014. Jacksons is a convenience store business in five states that continues to create a sense of luxury in the most unlikely of places — this time, a car wash. It offers oil changes and other car-care services. Many of the local car washes know that customers are coming in frequently, and each offers various discounts and loyalty programs to keep the dirty clean. Drive in or go online to check on each of their programs and stay clean as you drive through our vicinity and beyond.
THE CARWASHER This is full-service, meaning attendants will clean your vehicle inside and out. Exit the vehicle and wait in an air-conditioned lobby where gifts and other accessories are available. 501 E. Indian School Rd., 7 Scottsdale (480) 949-0933 thecarwasher.com
JACKSONS CAR WASH The company invested millions in renovating the sublime waiting areas, upgrading the wash and service equipment to be state-of-the-art, and building an inventory of the highestquality car-care products on the market. 1 954 E. Highland Ave., Phoenix (602) 277-8877 jacksonswash.com

The eye of the beholder — that’s where art lives. And there’s plenty for beholders to view throughout Scottsdale’s renowned arts district. New to the district’s eclectic mix is J. Klein Gallery, itself eclectic in genre. Located on Main Street in Old Town, it includes classic Western themes rendered in contemporary style. It is home to three artists: Jim Klein, whose favored medium is acrylic, paints bright, colorful works that celebrate his love of nature and music; Jeffrey Berryman, whose oils are done on industrial forms of metal, has evolved a modern surreal style he calls “surruralism” for his treatment of agriculture, animals and city scenes; and wildlife sculptor Dan Ostermiller, whose detailed bronzes capture the life of their subject, creates works that range from hand-held size to larger-than-life installations. Going directly to nature for its art, Touchstone Gallery is filled with what Scottsdale Gallery Association President Veronica Graffius describes

Curb Appeal
Plant for color and texture, and watch out for frost
EACH MONTH
BY RAEANNE MARSH
Of two distinct landscape styles — traditional style, green and lush with foundation shrubs, or quasi-desert, with low water use — the former is the style most favored in our vicinity. The best look requires appropriate layering and mix of texture and color, explains Melinda Walton, co-owner of Berridge Nurseries on Camelback Road. Roses are popular as a hedge, especially the Iceberg Rose. This rose, which produces white flowers, blooms frequently throughout the year — except for what Walton refers to as a forced dormancy in December and January — although somewhat slower during the hot months of summer. Also popular in our vicinity is Little Ollie, a dwarf olive bush with silver-grey foliage. Those are two of numerous options homeowners have for low shrubbery; there are fewer available for ground cover. Trailing varieties of lantana — with white, purple or yellow flowers — are easy to control and maintain. If you want a more lush appearance, go for the wedelia. And then there’s myoporum, which Walton describes as “like a green carpet that just hugs the ground” as she notes that most people don’t want to see any dirt or any of the decorative granite commonly used to cover landscape beds. Spring will be the time to plant bare-root roses, but now is Myoporum a great time to get
the beds ready — turning over the soil and adding fertilizer. Berridge offers free Little rose classes Ollie every weekend in January to help you get the best results. Other special care for your garden this time of year is sheltering vulnerable plants from frost. Most vines are frosttender, notes Walton, also naming lantana, hibiscus, geraniums — in fact, most flowers — and desert plants, too, which are popular here as accents for the garden. There is a special frost cloth available that’s breathable, “so you can leave it on for several days” and not suffer the inconvenience of repeatedly Iceberg putting the Rose cover on and off during extended frosts, says Walton, explaining household staples such as sheets are serviceable but become heavy when wet and are better not left on too long. And burlap sacks and other heavy materials are best avoided altogether.

Arcadia Adirondacks Found throughout the vicinity on the lawns in front of homes, ranging from the new-build country mansions to the three-bedroom mid-century ranch, is the Adirondack chair. This all-weather lawn chair was designed by Thomas Lee and inspired by his need for a summer chair when he was vacationing in Westport, New York, in the early 1900s. Originally made of 11 wooden boards, it was patented and has made its way to many homes throughout our area, looking comfortably at-home among glasses of wine, bikes and kids’ toys. —Mike Hunter

JAN. 2016
MORE THAN NUMBERS A proper sports bar enthusiast wants to know how many beers are on tap. There are other special features at these watering holes as well.
Cheers to Your Team
Arcadia Tavern (16) Sixteen beers on tap, three of them local brews. A lot of choice on the restaurant menu, from appetizers and salads to sandwiches to steaks and seafood, all made from scratch. Special on the weekend is the Bloody Mary Bar, with an assortment of fixin’s that continually expands in response to customer requests. “We take our Bloody Marys seriously,” says general manager Aaron Burke.
Sports bars offer viewing with spirits on tap and a spirited atmosphere BY RAEANNE MARSH

Majerle’s Sports Grill (17) The best way to enjoy watching sports is with others who share your excitement, exponentially compounding the energy. In person at the event is one way to do that; another is to get yourself over to the local sports bar. In fact, if you don’t want to have to choose a single game, the sports bar route is your best bet — with a multitude of screens, the sports bar lets you rah-rah cheer for all your favorite teams at once. And there’s the extra appeal of special events, like the bowl games that fill this month’s sports schedule. Coming from the world of professional sports, retired Suns forward Dan Majerle shows his understanding of fans’ passions with 42 TV screens in self-named Majerle’s Sports Grill in Old Town Scottsdale. Plus, subscribing to every sports package available, Majerle’s is able to show the most comprehensive assortment of games being broadcast, whatever the sport. Arcadia Tavern also takes viewing seriously. It’s not just that there are 34 TVs; eight are jumbo 80-inch screens
that make the other 26 at the still large 60 inches look small in comparison. Although no screens are actually mounted in the patio, there’s good visibility to the screens above the bar. Zipps covers its bases inside and out. The Zipps on Camelback has 14 TVs inside and five outside, fairly evenly split between large screen and standard size. Zipps Arcadia has 24 inside and 4 outside, with a special configuration that separates the bar and dining room spaces: With a back-to-back arrangement so there is a wall of TVs facing each side, four TVs are mounted together. Each side of the wall, then, can serve as one enormous screen or be an eyeball-ful for four individual events. TVs alone do not a sports bar make, of course, and these establishments do not neglect those other vital elements: drink and food. Bar selections include more than a dozen beers on tap, and the kitchens provide suitable accompaniments.
Seventeen beers on tap, including a selection of local brews. Grill menu is varied and includes hand-tossed pizzas. 4425 N. Saddlebag Trail, Scottsdale (480) 889-9949 • majerles.com/old-town-scottsdale
Zipps (14) Fourteen beers on tap, soon to include the local Papago Orange Blossom at the Arcadia location (Camelback already has it). Menu favors burgers and sandwiches, with appetizers, salads and a few tempting desserts. Add a little play for yourself, as each Zipps offers a shuffleboard game, a pool table and at least one Golden Tee console. zippssportsgrills.com Arcadia Also enjoy the touchscreen jukebox. 3647 E.
