All about Sunday Comfort

Join the chef at The Gladly on Sunday nights for the restaurant’s “old fashioned” take on the classic Sunday diner. Fried chicken has long been a Southern Sunday supper staple, and The Gladly is taking the classic comfort food trend westward with its new, weekly Fried Chicken Sunday Supper. The contemporary American restaurant is following up its fall Sunday Supper series of rotating, family-inspired meals with a new weekly Fried Chicken Sunday Supper. Chef Ben Graham will showcase his fresh take on the deliciously tender fried favorite each week, along with his choice of global and Southern-inspired sides that will range from Bernie’s Mac ‘n Cheese and collard greens to rice waffles with kimchi glaze and pickled daikon. Fried Chicken Sunday Suppers are available every Sunday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. only. Each plate is $25 and includes a half chicken with sides.

Cart the Night Away Old Town Scottsdale has become one of the best-known spots for nightlife in America. With more than 40 nightclubs, restaurants and dance clubs spread throughout a one-milewide circle southeast of Camelback and Scottsdale roads, this mecca for entertainment, drink and dance is easily navigated by golf carts. With safety a major concern, golf cart companies are dressing up elongated golf carts to continue the fun between hot spots. With lights, music and even standup comedy (or sit down, in this case), the entertainment never has to stop and patrons can get around easily and without concern for parking, drinking and driving, or getting lost.

Workshops for (and of) Beauty

Citrine Natural Beauty Bar is in the Biltmore Fashion Park, with a large and open storefront. It opened its flagship store at Biltmore Fashion Park’s UNION (soon outgrowing that initial space) in November 2012 and quickly became the “it” place to go to get all things naturally glamorous, with the latest and best in all-natural and clean beauty products. Boasting a large line of all-natural beauty products from foundation and mascara to exfoliants and oils in its 1,400-square-foot retail space, it offers makeup and skincare workshops (details emailed to customers when an event is scheduled) for customers to learn the importance of these products and their correct use.

spots, is a great source of education about cleansing your body of toxins through blends of fruits and vegetables. Nékter boasts that each of its juice servings contains up to three pounds of fresh produce and the natural ingredients are of the highest quality. According to respected research, the more organic and natural the foods we consume, the better off we are healthwise. Eating should be all about nutrients and, of course, flavor. The flagship True Food Kitchen in Biltmore Fashion Park is a fantastic eatery where your health is top of mind. Sourced ingredients and special blends to expose flavor and nutrients is what this Andrew Weil, M.D.inspired menu is all about. Weil, who partnered with prolific restaurateur Sam Fox to found this concept, is known as the foremost “guru” on holistic health and influenced Fox in the menu creations that range from organic drinks to desserts. The menu of anti-inflammatory foods served at True Food isn’t meant to deprive a healthy body of great flavors; it’s meant to take popular trends in cuisine and pair them with healthy living — a real advantage to living in the vicinity.

A healthy life includes a great amount of activity. Hiking, working out, taking walks — it is all activity and it is all good for the mind, body and spirit. There’s nothing like the turn of a new year to get yourself into great health (or even back into great health). Our vicinity is home to many businesses that address themselves to making us healthy through diet, activities and fundamental, allaround good living. Instead of focusing narrowly on losing weight, as was the norm in years past, exposing some of the great ways to eat healthy is a definite trend in business through companies like Juby True, a juice bar of sorts that offers juices and foods that let you do everything from cleansing to simply enjoying a sweet beverage with good nutrition in mind. Along those same lines is Kaleidoscope Juice, located at the Optima Sonoran Village and in Old Town Scottsdale. Kaleidoscope is all about energy through great ingredients and quality foods and juices, including green juices, which it promotes as providing a virtually immediate health boost. organization, the benefits are apparent in the hour-long classes. Led by a single coach, participants are guided through an intense workout that includes cardio, weights and various exercises meant to energize and tone. Getting in shape is truly as easy as simply showing up on a regular basis (well, and doing the workouts). At the Camelback Village Racquet and Health Club, located on Camelback Road at 44th Street, the focus on leading a healthy lifestyle is evident upon your arrival. A virtual country club minus the golf course, this all-inclusive club includes everything from tennis and racquetball to basketball and weightlifting. It has some

of the top local instructors and offers numerous classes to find a better you. Yoga, Pilates, spin and stretching are just some of the offerings, and each is offered at a pace that will surely get you in to try the class. Maybe it’ll stick, and by this time next year you’ll be in shape. One of the healthiest ways to get started or to keep going is to work on yourself with a personal trainer or a small boutique fitness establishment here in the vicinity that will certainly work your body but also focus on your spirit. Reformed Pilates is a studio that fuses Pilates and cycling for a great low-impact, highintensity strength training. The soothing

Pilates class includes elements of balance, flexibility and core strength — truly bringing mind, body and spirit together. The elevated heart rate achieved during the session is considered to be the best way to get results. And certainly not to be overlooked is the role of mind and spirit in the health equation. While many fitness facilities recognize this and offer meditation as part of their programming, Current Meditation recently opened in Arcadia with meditation as its sole focus. Current Meditation specializes in mental fitness and guided meditation practice, combining scientifically backed meditation curriculum with a cutting-edge environment that provides a place for people to focus on the practice of mental fitness as a part of their regular routine.

Sure, Valentine’s Day is a month away, but the spirit is already in the air as retailers around town took down their Christmas displays and immediately replaced them with Valentine’s Day gift items. In that spirit, we at Vicinity Magazine offer an alternative idea to the staples of cards and candy: the special shared serenity of a couples’ massage. Not all spas are equipped to offer couples’ massages. Our vicinity, however, boasts three top resort spas that have these on their spa menu year-round — with something a little extra in store for Valentine’s Day. Alvadora Spa is part of the Royal Palms Resort, which is, itself, considered one of the most romantic in the country. Within that atmosphere, Alvadora Spa offers its treatments in rooms that spill out to their private courtyards to take full advantage of the lush Mediterranean landscaping. Many therapies include the spa’s Vichy showers or cascading outdoor waterfall showers, and one option for couples is a hot stone massage. There will be specials for Valentine’s Day, but information was not yet available at time of press. Joya Spa at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia is calling February the “Month of Love” and has designed a couples’ spa experience of romance and luxury. This in addition to the spa’s pampering essence of inducing a feeling of being refreshed and revived. The “Mi Amor Couple Massage” starts with a glass of champagne, and the massage is a 50-minute Classic Massage in traditional Swedish style of light to medium pressures. Couples may opt to add a side-by-side pedicure as a finishing touch. Spa Biltmore incorporates vegan and organic ingredients into its treatments, and stays on top of advances in noninvasive skin care technology. A couples experience available year-round is offered in a suite scented by a warm, soy aromatherapy candle, with the bodywork customized for individual care. A special addition for everyone with treatments on Valentine’s Day: Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries.

Local architect leading with transitions in living space

DINING EVENTS

BY HENRY MACKEY

In Arcadia, neighborhoods are dominated by traditional, ranch-style houses, with a scattering of contemporary homes providing the occasional contrast. The differentiating factor between a ranch house and other types, such as contemporary, is the shape of the roof. “With the contemporary [homes], there are more clean and horizontal elements, and with the traditional [homes], there are steeper, pitched roofs,” says Mark Candelaria, award-winning architect and owner of Candelaria Design Associates, and long-time homebuilder in Arcadia. Because the traditional ranch style is becoming dated, many homeowners have begun to crave a new, more daring look. This “transitional-style” look varies slightly from the ranch-style houses while still based on the outline of a ranch house. Transitional houses are generally traditional houses with contemporary elements among their amenities and features. Some elements that denote a transitional house are lighter color choices, numerous windows and glass, and the ranch-style pitched roof. “All ages like the transitional style because it’s comfortable yet it’s a little more upscale and contemporary,” says Candelaria. Contrasts between a traditional and transitional home may sound minor, but they make all the difference. “The outcome of the house really depends on the details of it,” says Candelaria.

MORE THAN NUMBERS A proper sports bar enthusiast wants to know how many beers are on tap. There are other special features at these watering holes as well.

Majerle’s Sports Grill (17) The best way to enjoy watching sports is with others who share your excitement, exponentially compounding the energy. In person at the event is one way to do that; another is to get yourself over to the local sports bar. In fact, if you don’t want to have to choose a single game, the sports bar route is your best bet — with a multitude of screens, the sports bar lets you rah-rah cheer for all your favorite teams at once. And there’s the extra appeal of special events, like the big Super Bowl game coming up next month. Coming from the world of professional sports, retired Suns forward Dan Majerle shows his understanding of fans’ passions with 42 TV screens in self-named Majerle’s Sports Grill in Old Town Scottsdale. Plus, subscribing to every sports package available, Majerle’s is able to show the most comprehensive assortment of games being broadcast, whatever the sport.

small in comparison. Although no screens are mounted in the patio, there’s excellent visibility to the screens above the bar. And it takes the Super Bowl even more seriously — or, actually, celebrationally, giving over the patio to special activities and, possibly, celebrity appearances. Zipps covers its bases inside and out. The Zipps on Camelback has 14 TVs inside and six outside, fairly evenly split between large screen and standard size. Zipps Arcadia has 24 inside and 4 outside, with a special configuration that separates the bar and dining room spaces: With a back-to-back arrangement so there is a wall of TVs facing each side, four TVs are mounted together. Each side of the wall, then, can serve as one enormous screen or be an eyeball-ful for four individual events. TVs alone do not a sports bar make, of course, and these establishments do not neglect those other vital
