Staying Put in Style Vacation? In our vicinity, there’s no place like “home” W Scottsdale

BY BILL KENNEDY

Ever dream of living in a hotel? Imagine, as you’re snuggled deep inside a plush bathrobe while room service rolls to your bedside a tray of fresh oysters and chilled champagne, that going home is not a possibility — because this is home. Fantasy is the business of luxury resorts. Within their walls, guests have the opportunity to experience a part of the world they’ve never seen, and even travel back in time. Six months out of the year, people from all over the world come to our vicinity to experience the fantasies on display in our world-renowned hotels. But what happens the other half of the year, when local temperatures reach triple digits and all those snow birds take flight? Time for us vicinity-dwellers to start living the dream. Do you dream of all-night dance parties and state-of-the-art spa treatments? Consider W Scottsdale, “where you can

Hotel Valley Ho

experience the distinct culture of the country’s most livable city,” says hotel spokesperson Laura McGilley. Besides being in walking distance of downtown’s vibrant nightlife, there are three chic and colorful bars onsite, one of which runs alongside the rooftop pool, where hip-hop luminaries like Lil Jon and Drake play to packed crowds. And what better place to recover after a night on the town than Bliss Spa — which McGilley describes as “a true insider’s escape” — which has specials all summer for Arizona residents. Enjoy innovative treatments set to an R&B soundtrack, culminating in a decadent brownie buffet. History buffs, look no further than Hotel Valley Ho, which was opened in 1956. Called “one of the best-preserved mid-century hotels in the country” by architect Alan Hess, it was designed by Edward Varney, a student of Frank Lloyd

Omni Resort & Spa at Montelucia

Wright. Varney’s use stone and vast expanses of glass creates a bond with surrounding desert. The Valley Ho’s most stunning feature is the seven-story tower that rises from the front lobby, which, according to hotel spokesperson Kristin Heggli, “was in Varney’s original plans,

but wasn’t finished until 2008.” The top of the tower boasts a penthouse suite with views of Camelback Mountain, though “all the rooms at the hotel include a private patio or balcony,” says Heggli. The onsite restaurant, ZuZu Café, does as much as the rest of Ho to bring guests back in time, with its retro furniture and oldschool American grub like mac n’ cheese and meat loaf, prepared by Chris Wiley, crowned one of “America’s Best Hotel Chefs” by the James Beard Foundation. Another slice of our vicinity’s history is the Royal Palms Resort and Spa. If the Valley Ho is big band swing, the Royal Palms has the intimacy and romance of jazz. Once the winter home of a wealthy Chicago financier, the hotel opened to the public in 1948, counting among its first guests Hollywood stars such as Helena Rubenstein and Groucho Marx. Like the fare served at the awardwinning T. Cook’s, the architecture is Mediterranean, a Sicilian villa shaded by flowers, vines and Camelback Mountain. A perfect couple’s retreat, the Royal Palms offers packages that let you and your sweetheart dine privately in one of many Via Cappellos, or lovers’ corners — secluded spots hidden around the resort.

VICINITYMAG.COM

PAGE 7

If the Royal Palms is Italy, then the Omni Resort & Spa at Montelucia is Spain. Its award-winning restaurant, Prado, with its vaulted ceilings, cast-iron adornments and wood-fired oven, offers guests a chance to pull up a seat and dine on tapas prepared by two-star Michelin chef Alex Stratta. The level of execution Stratta brings to the cuisine is mirrored at the Joya Spa. “The jewel of the resort,” where, says hotel spokesperson Chloe Dake, guests can choose a stone or “let a stone choose them.” Each stone represents a different goal the spa

treatment is supposed to help you attain, be it clarity, focus, even romance — all under a domed roof, colored black and alight with artificial stars that float in the same pattern as the night sky in Granada. If burning incense isn’t your thing, take a spin burning rubber on the Montelucia’s Dream Car Tour. “We put you behind the wheel of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Bentleys,” says Dake, “and let you drive the local highways and side streets.” These are roads we vicinity-dwellers travel all year ’round. But how often do you get to ride them in the car of your dreams?

Museum of the West: Where It’s Cool to Explore Photos courtesy Rees Candee (left), Hart M. Schultz (right)

Getting “out and about” in the summer means finding a great indoor attraction BY RAEANNE MARSH

Scottsdale boasts itself “the West’s most western town,” but its newest museum has a much broader scope. Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, on the outskirts of Scottsdale’s Old Town, celebrates that vast region generations worldwide have romanticized: the American West. There’s a marvelous array of public art, from the sidewalk designs to the standing

During the summer, everything cool is inside. In fact, chills will likely run down your spine at first sight of the gleaming silver and hand-tooled leather on the elaborate parade saddle — by famed Hollywood artisan Edward H. Bohlin — at one end of the entrance foyer. With a strong focus on fine art, Museum of the West displays paintings and bronzes by premier artists. These

sculptures to the building’s architecture itself, but go ahead and save that for when you visit during the cooler months.

include ongoing exhibitions “Courage and Crossroads: A Visual Journey through the Early American West,” with paintings by

Thomas Moran, “gold tone” photographs by Edward S. Curtis and Pueblo pottery as well as objects associated with Kit Carson; and “Confluence of Cultures in the American West: A Selection of Contemporary Artists from the Peterson Collection” presenting iconic Western images such as mountain men, American Indians, cavalry and settlers, and, of course, buffalo. Movie buffs can delight in the collection of movie posters that line the walls of the orientation theater. Those looking for memorabilia of the West won’t be disappointed, either. Showcased within a set straight out of an old Western movie is everything from hats to spurs, including chaps in an amazing textural variety, sheriff’s badges and handcuffs, saloon gambler paraphernalia, and a seeming forest of saddles. Interactive pieces include creatively themed games, such as a Chutes & Ladders, Western landscape version, that contribute to the museum’s goal of immersing guests in the essence of the American West — which it achieves to such an extent that, barely one year after opening, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West became an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Western Spirit Special Exhibition “Lone Wolf (Hart M. Schultz): Cowboy, Actor & Artist” (upcoming opening June 21 and running through August 31) features a selection of paintings, sculptures, illustrated books and ephemera by a man whose life bridged the cultures of his Blackfeet Indian mother and his white father, prolific Western book writer James Willard Schultz. In addition to illustrating at least one of his father’s books, Lone Wolf shared his personal knowledge of his tribe and experience of the West in art rendered in bronze and on canvas. Distinguished for his ability to portray the transformations of the American West during the first half of the 20th as he lived through the period from the time of free-roaming buffalo prized as a vital resource to Native peoples to the first man on the moon, Lone Wolf also experienced first-hand two of the most romanticized occupations: a cowboy on the open range, and a screen actor in early silent films.

Similar but more challenging, the Extreme Course is for 13 years and older. The “Mini Mud Course” is for children 4 to 6 years old. And new this year, “The Mud Nursery” will provide fun for children ages 1 to 3. Those 6 and under can also participate in “Mudville,” a “town” designed for a mighty, muddy good time. The event also includes inflatable water slides and activities, food vendors, open play mud pits, sponsor area — and wash stations.

A new look for your home hangout

STAY INFORMED

BY BILL KENNEDY

Homeowners in our vicinity are looking outward. This means their backyards, of course, but the area getting the most buzz is up front. “The biggest trend I’ve seen is the front courtyard,” says Michael Gilson, owner of Arcadia Design Build. “People in Arcadia want that neighborhood feel. Hanging out in front gives them that.” That means plenty of seating, often around a fireplace or water feature. Shade structures and armadas are also moving from the backyard to the front. Even full outdoor kitchens have been making appearances on courtyards all over the vicinity. The style depends on the home, says Gilson. “You have to match it to your home. If your home is contemporary, then steel and vibrant colors are what you’ll

want. More classical design pairs better with brick and stone.” “Arcadians are definitely into the color,” says Roger Booth, owner of All Care Horticultural Services. Whereas in other parts of the Valley, desert landscaping is all the rage, flowers are definitely what’s in in our vicinity. “Lady Banks are really popular right now. They’re a small rose that comes in a lot of different colors. They give a lawn a lot of pop. Best part is, they can climb walls.” Another popular flower is a type of Tecoma bell called “Sparky.” “It blooms maroon and gold — ASU colors,” says Booth. Pick your best time of day, but it’s always a great season to enjoy your outside spaces.

All Care uses a custom fertilizer blend from a local company named Fertizona because, as Booth says, “it’s better adapted to the climate than the stuff you’re going to find at any big-box hardware store.” 1731 E. Arcadia Design Build, LLC The importance of providing clients with an accurate rendering of a project is not lost on owner Michael Gilson. “Oftentimes, people have to take loans to complete these projects. If we finish construction and some aspect isn’t exactly what they wanted, it’s not like it’s easy to just get another loan.” For this reason, Gilson uses Chief Architect, a design software that makes 3-D designs quick and easy. 2500 E. DINING

JUNE 2016

DID YOU KNOW? Considering that “LGO” stands for “La Grande Orange” …

Buck &Rider

Deviled Crab Dip This house signature dish is made with red potatoes, sliced watermelon radish, and biscuit crackers (glutenfree and house-made). $12

Down-under in our backyard BY MIKE HUNTER

The intriguingly named eatery at the bustling intersection of Camelback and 44th Street looks like a transplant from another time and place — for good reason, too. Built from the ground up by the same people who give us Chelsea’s Kitchen, Buck &Rider was inspired by a beach house in a coastal town in Australia. A unique concept that brings the sea to the dining table, this fun-vibe space is at once open and cozy, fresh and simple in a comfortably casual atmosphere. There’s nothing casual about the service, though — it’s impeccable. The wave of fresh seafood includes a raw bar and sushi, among other culinary delights — all the freshest ingredients and combinations of tastes that will please the most discerning coastal culinary enthusiast. Try the Seafood Bar for the freshest of oysters, Gulf shrimp, Alaskan king crab and stone crab claws, with your choice of cocktail sauce, mignonette, cognac mustard sauce, Thai dipping sauce or horseradish.

Or sit outside at LGO Hospitality’s de rigueur patio and enjoy such classics as New England clam chowder, which is a creamy and well-seasoned rendition. There are unique dishes that will quickly become local favorites and classics in their own right. The Spicy #1 Tuna Tostadas are made with rustic escabeche, avocado and jalapeños. Also headed for prime time is the Seaweed Superfood Salad, a three-seaweed blend tossed with cucumbers, avocado and macadamia nuts in a light sesame dressing. It is light and very good for the soul. And the name, you ask? Buck &Rider (no, that’s not a typo) refers to the term crab fishermen have for — you should have guessed — mating crabs. Buck &Rider is open for lunch and dinner. Your Money or Your Life One of the more popular cocktail choices, this is made with Old Forester Bourbon, Bénédictine, Combier and orange bitters. $11

Old-time Phoenicians may take this for granted, but newcomers may wonder about Phoenix’s idiosyncrasy of painting the trunks of citrus trees. Well, citrus trees share a trait with us humans — being susceptible to sunburn. When young citrus plants are pruned as trees rather than left to grow naturally as shrubs, the small canopy that’s left provides scant shade and their thinbarked trunks need to be protected from sunburn. So, to protect trees and ensure the fruit develops juicy and sweet, the trunks are painted with a non-oil-based white trunk paint.
