Now known for its extensive art classes, exhibits, lectures, workshops and community events, the Shemer is an icon of the era and a reminder of the quaint community that we are lucky to call home. MacDonald’s Ranch Pumpkin Festival

All That Fall Has to Offer Festivals come in a variety of guises

MACDONALD’S RANCH

BY BILL KENNEDY

October is a sigh of relief after a strenuous summer here in our vicinity. So it’s no wonder citizens of this special piece of Earth are so adept at finding ways to celebrate the beginning of fall. Here are four festivals that will make you love going outside again. Kicking things off with big fat style is the Original Phoenix Greek Festival (Oct. 7–9), held annually at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Community Center in Phoenix. “Believe me when I say there is no better Greek food in town than at our festival,” says Sandy Meris, a spokeswoman for the festival. “I was born into the Greek Orthodox faith and have been involved in this festival for my whole life,” she says, if you perhaps think she’s just tooting her own horn. And when Meris describes the food at the festival, you’re apt to believe her. From usual suspects, such as gyros, lamb on a spit, and lemon chicken, to classics made new, like baklava sundaes dripping with honey and pistachios, the selection sounds unique. “Come for the food, stay for the dancers,” Meris says. Traditional dances

Railfair

Oct. 1 – 30: 9:00a – 5:00p On Halloween: 9:00a – 1:00p Closed Tuesdays Go for the Arizona-grown pumpkins, stay for the old-school Western games like Duck Races and Conk the Crow, along with a shooting gallery and pedal cars. Kids can experience ranch life in the petting zoo and an authentic hayride (pulled by horses and mules) while parents get to feast on barbeque and even learn to pan for gold at the gem mine.

are performed every hour by nationally award-winning troupes to the sounds of Greek folk music. History is also on display through tours of Holy Trinity Cathedral, with its Byzantine stained glass and Southwestern setting, which perfectly encapsulates this East-meetsWest celebration of culture. If you are looking for more oldfashioned Americana, check out Railfair at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Museum (Oct. 8–9) in Scottsdale. Along with the locomotive rides and model train display the museum is known for, Railfair gives families a rare peak at the park’s seldom seen vintage railroad equipment. And free tours of the Roald Amundsen Pullman Car and Scottsdale Railroad Museum. Railroads have deep roots in our vicinity, but even deeper run the roots of Hispanic culture. David Tyga cofounded the Arizona Taco Festival at Salt River Fields (Oct. 15–16) in Scottsdale with Rick Phillips seven years ago, and so began the world’s first taco festival, born right here in our vicinity. “The first question friends and family from out of town always asked me was, ‘Where’s the best tacos?’ So we decided to hold a taco contest and find out,” remembers Tyga. Along with fifty different vendors, ranging from big chains to mom-andpop food trucks selling tacos for $2, the festival offers much more. “Rick and I come from a marketing background, so we’ve always thought of the festival as selling a lifestyle — the beach to the barrio,” says Tyga. Live music, tequila tastings and a Chihuahua beauty pageant complete the package.

As the month comes to a close and the days grow shorter, the mood is set for Haunted Hotel Ball at the Saguaro Hotel (Oct. 28–29) in Scottsdale. Owner and founder Christian Banach held the original ball in Chicago in 2009 because, he says, “the only thing for adults to do on Halloween was to go to a nightclub that had a few cobwebs strung around and that’s it.” When his parents moved to Phoenix, he remembers visiting them and finding the same lack of any real Halloween experience. The first Haunted Hotel Ball in Arizona was at Valley Ho in 2010, but when Banach wanted to expand the event from one to two, as well as create more diverse areas to drink and dance, he partnered up with Saguaro. The idea is, once a year, ghosts from the hotel’s past take over for the weekend. Guests are invited to come party down with the ghouls. The party is held in three rooms, each with its own theme. The lobby, where guests enter, is known as the Great Hall and is manned by a short-tempered bell-hop — in this case, an actual little person. Once inside, the Grand Ballroom is under the supervision of vampires, and party-goers revel to the wee hours. VIP guests have access to the downstairs Boiler Room, with a separate DJ and bar. A preferred rate on a hotel room at the Saguaro is offered the ball’s attendees. From the ancient Greeks to the ghosts of Scottsdale, October is packed with what makes our vicinity a great place to enjoy the changing season. Día de los Muertos Celebration Sat., Oct. 29 – Mon., Oct. 31 10:00a – 5:00p Two-day, family-oriented festival uses music, dance and storytelling to explore the beauty and meaning of this special holiday. Enjoy entertainment and browsing the Mercado filled with art, jewelry and other wares; for the children, crafts and face-painting. DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix dbg.org/events/dia-de-los-muertos-celebration

Scottsdale Fall Festival Sat., Oct. 29: 5:00p – 8:00p A spooky evening for the whole family. Festivities include pumpkin carving, fireworks, more than 25 game booths and 10 bounce houses. Three different costume contests are also being held: kids, families and dogs will be judged on cuteness, scariness and creativity. Fireworks and a haunted pumpkin patch complete the evening, making the festival a great way to celebrate the season and enjoy the cool weather. ELDORADO PARK 2301 N. “Jewelry is trying to be very wearable right now,” says Scott Gauthier, the creative force as well as the owner of Jewelry by Gauthier. Although specific stones may rise and fall in popularity, Gauthier believes jewelry is more of a long-term fashion statement than the seasonal variation of clothing designs. “In jewelry, the great thing is that nothing’s ever out of style,” he says. “It’s more of a personal fashion statement.” Cornelis Hollander, award-winning jewelry designer and owner of Cornelis Hollander Designs, makes the same point. Although seeing interest in lighter earrings, mostly white metals, as well as casual bracelets and light-hearted necklaces, he sees jewelry as “long-term fashion” that will last 15 to 20 years, unlike clothing fashion, which changes every half-year. “If you buy an amethyst, it’s for the next 10 years; it’s not like next season you change your amethyst to pink.” Noting that his main business is engagement and wedding rings, Hollander shares that many clients come to him when, having been married many years, they want to upscale their ring to a larger diamond. “Most of the time, they keep the little diamond from the past,” he says. Common choices are mounting the smaller diamond in a necklace or incorporating it into the next ring. Addressing the choice of metal, Al Molina, owner of the exclusive Molina Fine Jewelers, notes the “best color” depends on whether you want to call attention to the metal design or to the stone in the setting. If the former, you want to contrast with the skin — platinum or white gold on olive or darker skin; yellow gold on fair. “But,” he continues, “if you concentrate on the stone, you want the mounting to disappear.” So the colors are reversed: yellow gold on darker skin and platinum on fair.

DID YOU KNOW? The prominence of diamonds as the epitome of fine gems owes much to the state of the art of photography. Early photography could not suitably capture the brilliance and shimmer of color in rubies, emeralds and the other colored gems, so diamonds were the gem of choice for pictorial promotions.

Operating independently, these two fine jewelers — Molina an iconic presence in the Valley and Black, Starr & Frost now having brought to Arizona its storied history of 205-plus years — now share the landmark chateau on Camelback at 32nd Street. While appointments are needed for the Molina salon, both honor the tradition of offering customers the highest level of hospitality, starting with a glass of champagne. MOLINA FINE JEWELERS 3134 E. Jewelry by Gauthier Always pushing himself to take his designs in new directions, Scott Gauthier is building anticipation for the unveiling of his latest collection – “Horizon” – this December. Current collections include examples of 2- to 3-carat rubies, emeralds and sapphires in settings that emphasize wearability. 4211 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale (480) 941-1707 jewelrybygauthier.com

OdySea Aquarium

Also On Site The 35-acre OdySea in the Desert complex includes: OdySea Mirror Maze is designed to be an adventure to challenge your body and mind. The pathways through the maze are lined with mirrors, creating infinite reflections, impossible corridors and mind-bending light effects.

An oceanic adventure deep in the desert BY RAEANNE MARSH

Greeted by the sight of aquarium spheres suspended from the ceiling in the lobby, visitors to the recently opened OdySea Aquarium on Via de Ventura just east of Loop 101 begin an entertaining journey designed along an educational theme. “The storyline the visitor follows,” says developer Amram Knishinsky, “is, we follow a drop of water from when it falls from the sky, to rivers and lakes, to shores, to the depths of the ocean.” The layout of the various aquarium displays follows that logical progression. First are the freshwater fish, divided as representative of three major river systems: United States rivers, South American rivers and Asian rivers. “People are amazed at the colors and size of species,” Knishinsky says, noting brightly colored fish are not exclusive to salt water. Exhibits of shore species include a large touch pool where visitors can interact with stars and other fish varieties. To enhance the experience of viewing the ocean depths, visitors take an escalator to a lower level — where they find themselves walking through acrylic

tunnels completely surrounded by water. Describing the thousands of fish in the Great Barrier Reef tunnel, Knishinsky relates his supplier has told him he has the greatest diversity outside of Australia. And then there’s the Living Sea Carousel — which Knishinsky calls his pride and joy. It’s comprised of five different theaters on a rotating platform. Every five minutes, visitors will see a new exhibit, a 50-foot-wide window to marine life from sea lions to sharks to sea turtles — in the comfort of their stadium seating — with entertaining and

educational narration. A different theater presents a 10-minute 3-D film Knishinsky commissioned from an IMAX producer, Giants of the Ocean, on whale sharks and whales. They’re not in the aquarium, but Knishinsky says, “I want to educate people on how precious they are.” ODYSEA AQUARIUM 9500 Via de Ventura, Scottsdale (480) 291-8000 odyseaaquarium.com Get the Vicinity Mobile App now at getmyvicinityapp.com

Butterfly Wonderland’s namesake attraction is a 10,000-square-foot atrium rainforest where you can walk among thousands of free-flying butterflies from around the world. There’s also a touchtank with manta rays, and coming later this year will be a rainforest reptile exhibit. A marketplace of retail and restaurants, with many businesses expected to open later this year. The lower level will offer “experience retail” — an arcade, indoor merry-go-round, oxygen bar, and Polar Play, maintained at 5 degrees Fahrenheit, where you can enjoy ice sculpture and ice games — and, on weekends, live bands. Upstairs will be an international array of restaurants, whose patios all overlook the courtyard.

Scottsdale Waterfront

Modern Living: Urban Style Among it All

IT IS ALL HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN YOUR VICINITY

DINING EVENTS

BY ANNA MACKEY

Undeniable charm is attracting more and more people to our neighborhoods, and the demand for housing continues to grow. Breaking away from the trademark stucco suburbs so blandly prevalent in the Southwest, these pioneers in luxury living break tradition and create new guidelines for “modern living.” Because of the local amenities and convenience to everything happening in this vicinity, developers have been bringing some great concepts and projects to our area. Safari Drive, a unique modern property, was a game-changer when it went up on the canal in Old Town Scottsdale years ago. To its modern, urban style and its artistic mixed-use concept, residents flocked, eager to occupy this work of art — although it was slow to start. Since then, we have seen Scottsdale Waterfront, the tallest properties in Scottsdale, at the corner of Camelback and Scottsdale roads. Properties of this type are seen elsewhere in America and are common among beachfront properties, but are a first for Scottsdale — at least to their extent. They include urban shopping, dining and services to accommodate residents and provide them every amenity. The Optima properties, of which we have three in our vicinity — Biltmore, Camelview Village and the new Sonoran Village — are each architectural wonders that boast award-winning design. Both Camelview and Sonoran Village are draped with vegetation that creates a “park-like” atmosphere for each unit, and both include public space, businesses, cafes and more.

Business at Biltmore

In addition to sleek and streamlined interior designs, The Moderne boasts fabulous but functional outdoor amenities. The complex has a resort-style pool and Jacuzzi, but adds something new: in-water lounge chairs. Beyond the pool, residents can use a clubhouse perfect for summer barbeques. And of course, there is free Wi-Fi.

The fitness center at Optima has full-sized basketball and racquetball courts, and is fully stocked with the newest cardio equipment and weights. There is a lap pool, a hot tub, locker and steam rooms, personal trainers and even towel service. The only thing the residents have to bring is motivation.

Resort-style pool and spa, fitness center and something else — a business center. Biltmore at Camelback’s unique space offers residents an office in the convenience of their own building. The center features free Wi-Fi, laptops and iPads available for use, and even a color printer.

DINING

OCTOBER 2016

DID YOU KNOW?

Hillstone Restaurant: A Biltmore Classic

Thai Steak & Noodle Salad Marinated filet, mango, avocado, fresh herbs $21

A timeless appeal is what one can expect from Hillstone on Camelback Road in the Biltmore area. This classic cuisine fused with many of the more popular concepts — like sushi and steakhouse — truly does have a bit of it all. In the heart of this business district, it is often reservations only for lunch and dinner. The bar, which includes the sheltered patio, is open for dining as well, although the selection there is confined to the sushi offerings. The menu is first-rate, with items like the hand-cut French fries with spicy mayonnaise, so crispy and light. The sushi choices are hand-made to order with the finest-grade fish. The Spicy Tuna Roll is a favorite because it is cubed tuna tossed in spices, giving it a fresh and powerful bite. The Thai Steak & Noodle Salad is made with marinated filet, mango, avocado and fresh herbs. Hillstone is famous for its burgers. The California Burger is most popular, with its melted jack cheese, avocado, arugula, red onion and

house-made mustard honey. The Ahi Tuna Burger is also not to be missed. Finally, you must not miss out on the Ruby Red Salmon that is coated with Cajun spices, oak grilled and served with broccoli — so light and so flavorful. The atmosphere, surprisingly, carries an appeal that could be as natural to Wall Street or Los Angeles. With rich woods surrounding you, the space feels open, yet the seeming labyrinth of walkways creates a sense of privacy around each booth and table. The servers know the menu inside and out and are quick to make recommendations that are sure to appeal to the most discerning palate. This is a Phoenix must for any casual to formal lunchtime or dinnertime need. HILLSTONE RESTAURANT 2650 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix (602) 957-9700 hillstonerestaurant.com

The first Hillstone opened its doors in the spring of 1977. Hillstone’s founder, George Biel, recognized the need for a new type of restaurant that was nonexistent at the time. He brought in a minority partner to open their first restaurant in Nashville, which they named Houston’s in reference to their native state of Texas. Hillstone is one of 15 names by which Hillstone Restaurant Group operates its signature concept; with a total of 48 locations across 15 states, it is quite possibly the only chain to have been reviewed by Bon Appétit.
