Aside from the amazing
weather we’re lucky enough to enjoy, there’s another reason to get out and enjoy this time of the year: spring training baseball. And nowhere else is America’s favorite pastime more a part of the culture and community than in the Valley of the Sun. Home to 15 Major League Baseball teams that call Arizona their spring training home, the Valley hosts an impressive roster of teams that includes the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland A’s, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. From Feb. 25 to March 30, teams will practice their skills and play against each other in preparation for the regular season. With multiple games being played almost every day, there will be no shortage of baseball action to be experienced and enjoyed. Springtime also brings a number of signature events and celebrations to the Valley. From Glendale and Downtown Phoenix to Scottsdale, Tempe and Chandler, the Valley is brimming with opportunities to see wonderful art, taste local cuisine and even learn about the history and heritage of international cultures. In Scottsdale, two of the city’s signature events will be held this spring: the Scottsdale Arts Festival in March and the Scottsdale Culinary Festival in April. Held at the Scottsdale Civic Center, both events promise days filled with arts, crafts, food, wine and family fun. If you’re looking to celebrate the cultural diversity of the country’s fifth largest city, plan to visit Downtown Phoenix for the Arizona Matsuri, a festival of Japanese culture in February, or the St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Faire in March. Celebrating two very different cultures, both festivals will showcase the special spirit and cultural significance of these unique heritages. And whatever you do, don’t miss the 23rd Surprise annual Chandler Ostrich Festival. Celebrating the city’s history of ostrich ranching, Scottsdale this unique event features a parade, live Glendale 17 51 101 entertainment, music, food and, of course, 101 Paradise Valley ostrich races. Central Phoenix In this issue of You Are Here, discover all 202 10 the things to see, do and experience in the Tempe 10 Mesa Valley this spring. From a day at the ballpark 60 to a weekend of festival fun, here is where you want to be. Chandler

Scottsdale Stadium
Spring training home to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox, Camelback Ranch is a true “diamond” in the desert, with 10,000-plus seats, eight suites, four minisuites, a press box and suite-level party deck. You’ll enjoy a fun-filled day at the ballpark at Glendale’s stateof-the-art facility.
Known as “Phoenix Muni,” this 8,000-seat stadium has been home-awayfrom-home for the Oakland Athletics for nearly 30 years. Built in 1964, the stadium was “christened” by baseball legend Willie Mays, who hit the first spring training home run at the park.
Home of the San Francisco Giants, Scottsdale Stadium is located in the heart of Downtown Scottsdale. With a great selection of restaurants, clubs, art galleries and entertainment venues mere steps away, a day at the ballpark doesn’t have to end after the ninth inning.

Nearly two years in the making, the new spring training home of the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks is finally here. Located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Scottsdale, the facility has 11,000 seats, the largest capacity of all the spring training stadiums in the Valley.
Founded in 1968, Tempe Diablo Stadium is one of the longest-standing stadiums in the Valley. Home field of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the stadium hosts matchups against the Cubs, Brewers, Giants, Mariners and Cincinnati Reds, giving fans more reason to enjoy a day at the ballpark.

QUICK TIPS
On Board
Slip on that vintage pair of Vans and roll over to Vision Gallery in Chandler, where you’ll get the chance to see a “rad” array of skate art. Through March 26, “Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art” showcases more than 300 decks. 10 E. Chicago St. 480-782-2695 visiongallery.org

Truth:You can find art in the most unexpected places. Take Calle 16 in central Phoenix, for instance. The brainchild of Barrio Café’s chef Silvana Salcido Esparza, the communitybuilt project features murals throughout the 16th Street district. 16th St. & Thomas Rd. calle16.org
There’s no question
that the Valley plays host to some of the most internationally acclaimed cultural venues known today, but it’s the works by local artists that make it a true arts destination. From the Scottsdale Arts District to Downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row to Historic Downtown Glendale, the Valley is brimming with art galleries and spaces filled with compelling works by local artists. To get a real taste of the local arts community, check out the 23rd annual Art Detour in Downtown Phoenix. This signature event gives art lovers the chance to take a self-guided tour of the city’s top independently owned galleries, artists’ studios and art spaces. Started in 1989, this event helped launch First Fridays and has gone on to become one of the premier art walk events in the country. If Indian art is your thing, take part in the Native Arts ArtWalk, held March 3 in Old Town Scottsdale. Held in conjunction with the Heard Museum’s famed weekend Indian fair, this first-time event is hosted by the Scottsdale Gallery Association. Creative Mecca Described as welcoming and inspiring, Old Town Scottsdale’s newest boutique has arrived. Jam is housed in the historic Charles Miller home, a Craftsman Bungalow-style home built in the early 1910s, and offers a selection of handmade items that range from art to fashion to home décor. But what make Jam different from your typical boutique are its cool artist exhibits, workshops and classes.
Sure they’re similar city to city, but many Valley malls are unique enough that you’ll enjoy more than just the offerings. Arizona Center arizonacenter.com

If you’re in the mood
for a little outdoor adventure, you’ve come to the right place. From hiking and biking to rock climbing and water sports, the Valley offers the adventure seeker a healthy number of activities to work up a sweat. From South Mountain Park and Preserve in Phoenix to Scottsdale’s McDowell Mountain Regional Park, the Valley is in the enviable position of having city parks that, let’s be honest, aren’t your typical walking trails and playgrounds. Rather, the Valley’s parks are filled with miles of rugged hiking and biking trails, rock formations perfect for climbing and rappelling, and stretches of scenic dessert terrain filled with native plants and wildlife. For a truly unique outdoor adventure, plan a hike up Camelback Mountain. Nestled in the heart of the city, this natural oasis in an urban setting provides one of the most challenging and picturesque hikes in the Valley. Or check out the unique rock formations at Papago Park. This 1,200-acre park straddling the Phoenix/Tempe boundary features “hole in the rock,” a red butte formed with a series of openings caused by erosion. Birding is Back An activity that dates back to the late 18th century, birding has been a favorite pastime of some of the world’s most recognized figures, such as author Ian Fleming, Cuban president Fidel Castro and playwright Agatha Christie. If you share the same interest in our feathered friends, visit the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, where nearly 200 species have been sighted. Swing Time Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa
Ladies Who Golf
Who says golf is the “gentleman’s game”? Women on Course, a ladies-only golf group, is hosting a Women’s Golf Experience, Feb. 22 at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale. Female duffers can participate in clinics, play in a 9-hole scramble, enjoy gourmet food and wine, and get the chance to win Callaway golf goods. 10320 E. Dynamite Blvd. 480-585-5300 womenoncourse.com
City Links
If you’re in Downtown Phoenix and looking to get your swing on, Encanto 18 will fit the bill. The third-oldest course in Arizona, the course has wide fairways and minimal hazards, perfect for the leisurely game in between business meetings. 2775 N. 15th Ave. 602-253-3963 phoenix.gov/recreation
Color Coded
Choosing which of three 18-hole championship courses at the Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa in Litchfield Park is right for you just got easier, thanks to a color-coding system of sorts.Try your hand at the gold (Arizona’s monster), red (a solid test) or blue (sporty challenge). 300 E. Wigwam Blvd. 623-935-3811 wigwamresort.com
From compelling art venues to gourmet dining, there’s no question there’s plenty to do in the Valley. But if you’re looking for exciting game play, nothing beats a good round of golf. Valley courses give golfers not only some of the most challenging greens but also a visual experience to remember. From the Jay Morrish-designed course at The Boulders Resort in Carefree to the three championship courses at the Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa in Litchfield Park, the Valley has its fair share of the most stunning — and challenging — courses in golf today. Whether it’s driving the ball through a landscape of majestic Saguaro cacti and dramatic rock formations or through palm tree-lined fairways, the Valley sets the scene for some of the most enviable golf destinations in the country. Frank & Albert made history in 1929. Todd & Conor serve it up three times a day.
Art. Architecture. Community. Character. It’s all here for the tasting. Dig in.
Executive Chef Todd Sicolo collaborated with Chef de Cuisine Conor Favre for more than a year to create contemporary versions of comfortable American classics. Like the restaurant’s namesakes, they use local purveyors, fresh thinking, and push boundaries, and it’s all about good taste.

QUICK TIPS
Variety is the spice of life in the Valley’s dining scene
Modern Mexican There’s no question the Valley has its share of gourmet Mexican cuisine. But with the addition of Taberna Mexicana in Scottsdale, the bar has definitely been raised. Located in the former home of Roy’s at the Scottsdale Seville, Taberna serves modern interpretations of authentic Mexican dishes. Specialties include the Yucatan pork stew baked in a banana leaf with fried plantains and the spicy pork carnitas. But if you really want to splurge, try the one-pound rib eye steak carne asada.

Fresh Connection It’s the new year and hope springs eternal. If you’ve packed on a few unwelcome pounds and getting into your pants is posing a new set of challenges, don’t fear: Seasons 52 has opened at Biltmore Fashion Park in Phoenix. Taking a unique approach to fresh and seasonally inspired fare, it puts nothing on the menu that is — ready for this? — more than 475 calories. Enjoy flatbreads, salads and specialty entrees, and end with a “mini indulgence” of individual servings of sweet desserts.

Fresh Take With the closing of Houston’s last December, Biltmore foodies lost a Valley institution that, in their eyes, would be hard to replace. Fortunately, the owners of the Esplanade restaurant have opened Hillstone, a “reinvented Houston’s” offering a fresh classic American menu in a more elegant setting. Menu variety includes entrees featuring fresh and seasonal ingredients. And don’t forget the wine. Hillstone offers some of the best the California wine country has to offer.

You’re enjoying the scene,
you’re down with the drinks and the music is beginning to move you. Looks like it’s time to get out on the dance floor and do your thing. If you’re looking to get your dance on, the Valley has a number of dance clubs that will get you moving. In Downtown Phoenix, the place to see and be seen is Bar Smith, a hot spot that has not one but two dance floors to get your groove on, as well as a pumping sound system that will shake you to your core. If you’re looking to get down in the West Valley, check out Sangria Luxe Lounge in Glendale. Described as urban chic and uber upscale, this hot spot has a high-energy dance floor where you can salsa, merengue or bachata the night away. In Downtown Tempe, the college set has a place to groove at Suite 301, a multifloor hot spot that is the place to go for drinks, dancing and late night dining. And then, of course, there’s Scottsdale, where you can find a high-energy nightclub on every corner. Check out the swanky Revolver Lounge, a favorite among local and international celebs, including Rihanna, who celebrated her 22nd birthday there. AMSTERDAM
